SUMMARY:
The narrator of the story approaches The House of Usher on a dark soundless day. This house, the home of his childhood friend Roderick Usher is mysterious and dark. The narrator observes that the house seems to have an evil aura about it and even claims to see an atmosphere of decay around it. He has come to the house on an invitation from his friend, who claims that he is incredibly ill, so ill that the narrator doesn’t hesitate a second to come to him.
On entering the house, he is lead to the room of his friend by a servant who seems to make no noise when moving. The estate is full of dark creepy statues, carvings, and tapestries that give him a strange eery feeling, though the statues were all there when he visited as a child. His friend Roderick is much paler and energetic than when he was a child, and though he suffered from a nervous demeanour then, it is only more heightened now. Roderick talks to his friend about his illness, and tell him that the thing that afflicts him most is FEAR.
