SUMMARY:
Roderick Usher's sister Madeline has been ill for a while with a mysterious sickness. No doctors can figure out what is wrong with her, and they can't try to make her better. The narrator spends a several days trying to cheer Roderick up to no avail. Roderick plays the guitar and he makes up lyrics for the songs he plays, and the two read stories together, but nothing can cheer Roderick up. Roderick soon spouts a theory that the house itself is unhealthy and is affecting the inhabitants of the house.
Madeline soon passes away in her sleep and Roderick says that he wants her to be first buried in the tomb of the house before moving her to the Family Tomb site. The narrator helps Roderick put his sister to rest, but remarks that Madeline, though cold to the touch still has rosy cheeks, as some do after death. Over the next couple of days, Roderick's behavior becomes even more strange.
