You don't feel close to God because you aren't good at thinking about yourself. Of course, we all think about ourselves too often, but I am not referring to the quantity of thoughts towards ourselves, but the quality. There is One who has thought about you enough that, once you believe what He says about you, you will never need to think about yourself again, and you will feel closer to God than you ever have.
