Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hey everyone, it's Chase. Today. I'm on the show talking
about what it's really like traveling with your parents. It's
not always what you do expect. Episode one one starts now,
Welcome to the Family Vacationer with Robin.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Tracy, your go to podcast for families on the move. Hey, everybody,
Welcome to the Family Vacationer, the podcast that helps families
create unforgettable travel memories.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
I'm Rob and I'm Tracy. And today's episode we continue
getting our kids perspective and we go into the dangerous
waters and asking our teenager for his honest opinions.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yep. I'm a little scared about this. Not gonna lie,
but we're gonna turn the mic over to Chase to
get the real team perspective on family vacations. No filters,
no sugarcoating, just Chase being Chase.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
But parents, don't worry. We're also digging into the stuff
your kids might not say out loud, like what these
trips really mean to them, even if they pretend to
sleep through most of it.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Chase, Welcome to the Family Vacationer. You ready, yep? Well said?
Well said?

Speaker 3 (01:20):
All right, Chase, Let's begin with an easy question what's
your gut reaction if I say, hey, Chase, we're going
on a family trip tomorrow. Be honest, but don't be brutal.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
I'm gonna say, yippie, that's what I'm gonna say.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
So you would be excited if we were going on
a trip tomorrow, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
All right. What part of the trip do you secretly
look forward to, even if you pretend you know you're
too cool, even if you pretend not to like it.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Probably the car ride, Like the car ride there.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Why the car ride because.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
It's like everybody's asleep and it's peaceful.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Is there a moment when we were on vacation where
you thought it was going to be lame but it
ended up actually being pretty cool all the time?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
So you're surprised all the time when we go on vacation,
you think it's going to be lame, but you always
end up having.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
A good time, sometimes most of the time.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
What's something that you have realized now that you've gotten
older and you're traveling with family that maybe you didn't
appreciate when you were younger. What do you mean like,
when you were younger, you probably just went with the
flow and didn't appreciate things.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Well, everything costs money, so you can't really like you
have limits, you can't do everything. Yeah, so you got
to make what you can do. You got to make
it count.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
That's good. I like that. What's one moment from a
family trip that surprised you emotionally? Like something you remember
because of how it felt, not just where we were.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
When we went to Universal, I felt magical. That was
the best time in my life. That was so fun.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
You liked Universal better than Disney?

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (03:07):
All right? So what's something that parents think kids want
on vacation but isn't true?

Speaker 1 (03:14):
I don't know. Everywhere's everywhere we go we're on vacation.
It's always fun.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
But is there something that we do that we think
you want to do but you actually don't want to do?

Speaker 1 (03:27):
I mean shopping, it's always the worst part of the trip.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Usually we do that if it's raining or whatever, just
because you can't go outside, so you're miserable when you
have to go shopping. All right, Well, on the flip side,
what's something you actually do appreciate even if you don't
always say it in that moment?

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Whatever we do in the trip.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
You appreciate everything, even though you never say it.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
What don't we get about traveling when you're well, We.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Like to be alone, right, We don't like always want
to be with somebody. Everybody needs their space. Everybody needs
their alone time, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
But that's kind of that's kind of against the family trip, though,
don't you think.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
I mean, yeah, but you could always fit in some
you know, alone time. Let them like depends on how
old they are, but let them roam a little bit,
do what they want, just for a little bit, and
then they come back to the family and then everybody's
back together.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
All right. On a scale from totally chill to I
can't believe I'm doing this, how would you rate our
typical travel place?

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Everywhere we go is fun? Like that one place with
the water parking side? Yeah, I was all right, but
it got really boring.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
But you enjoyed the trip overall though, Right, Yeah, it
was fun because we did a lot of different stuff.
Is there anything in particular on that trip that you
enjoyed more than other things?

Speaker 1 (05:08):
I forgot what it's called. It's like that upside down house.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Wonder works, I think is what it's like.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Yeah, that was fun.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
What did you like about it? Just there was so
much different stuff to do.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yeah, there's just there's just a bunch of things to
do there.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
What about the sledding? You guys got the goest sledding.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
That was fun, but it also got boring pretty fast
because they're just doing the same thing over and he
did the ropes.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Course.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
I hated that.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
That.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
That's something I can't believe I did. I hated that.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Wait a minute, you acted like you liked it.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
It was fun, but it was terrifying.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Oh that's fair. What about Disney World? What's your best
what's your favorite thing to do when we go to
Disney World?

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Rock and roller coaster? The best thing that? So?

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Your your favorite park, Hollywood Studios, or just that's just
your favorite ride.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
It's my favorite ride.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
What about the Tower of Tear?

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Oh gosh, I love that one so much. Tickle me
like and tickles my inside like you go down.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Is there any part of Disney that you don't like?

Speaker 1 (06:18):
What's that one? Places? With all the shopping Sandy Springs,
Sandy Springs.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
That would be a city in Georgia. Disney Springs would
be the place that you although you you always seem
to find stuff to purchase, so you must like it
a little bit.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
I mean it depends obviously, But you.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Know what about the food at Disney? Do you like
the food?

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Yeah? Oh yeah, best food ever out of my life.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
All right, Now, when we're at the beach, what's your
favorite thing to do with the beach?

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Okay, body or not? Bodyboard, but like like riding a
boogie board on the waves? I love skinboarding. But go
courts is the best thing we do. Every time we
go to the beach, we do go courts.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
So now at the beach, do you like to be
more active or do you like just to kind of
chill out?

Speaker 1 (07:12):
I would say like growing up, i'd be more active,
but now that I'm older, I feel like I chill
out more.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Well, now we're gonna do a speed round. Okay, I'm
gonna I just I'm gonna ask you a question. I
want quick answers, no explanations, Just go with your gut. Okay,
you're ready? You sure? You don't sound ready?

Speaker 1 (07:34):
I'm ready?

Speaker 2 (07:35):
All right?

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Now, just remember these are questions about being on vacation.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Okay, I'll bet all right, Yeah, the first one's I
just know the answer too. All right, Here we go,
ready sleep, sleeping in or getting up for breakfast.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Getting up for breakfast.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Oh wow, wow, all right, a stunner right out of
the gate. All right, hotel breakfast or fast food stop.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Let's tell breakfast?

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Beach volleyball or people watching with headphones?

Speaker 1 (08:05):
What does that mean? What would people want hear with headphones?
What does that mean?

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Watching people with your headphones on?

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Oh that one?

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Okay? Matching family shirts? Yes or no? No? Texting friends
are unplugging for a day.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Unplugging for a day depends on where we are, though
it's boring the other one, but if it's fun unplugging for.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
A day, hiking trail or go carts?

Speaker 1 (08:29):
I said, I said, go cards before you finish your sentence.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Okay, tour with a guide or explore on your own
or on my own selfie with the family or no
photo at all, No photo at all, beach all day
are packed?

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Itinerary like having a plan a plan because I don't
like sand at the beach all day.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Okay, if you got to plan the entire next family trip,
where would we go and what would we do?

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Differently, We've never been to this place, so I would
want to go to Hershey Park in Virginia.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
That Hershey Park is in Pennsylvania. But why do you
want to go to Hershey Park?

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Good desid It just sounds fun because it's chocolate. I
thought it was a roller coaster place.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
It is. There's many roller coasters at Hershey. Okay, fair enough.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Do you think that the trips that we've taken? You know,
you're fourteen now, so do you think that all these
trips will matter to you when you get older?

Speaker 1 (09:34):
Of course all memories matter, all.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
Right, Chase? What are some places that you do want
to go besides Hershey Park? What are some places that
you wish we would go as a family?

Speaker 1 (09:44):
M we I just want to go to Miami. I
don't know what we'd do there.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
What about Miami seems exciting just.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Like there's just like a lot of people there. It
just I don't know, it just seems exciting like fun,
But there's nothing to do there, So I don't know
or I would want to go. It's a Panama again.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Panama City beach.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Yeah, but instead of like printing like a hotel, I
want to do like a condo.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
On the beach, you like Panama City or Dustin better Panama.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Like the water it's always like more clear and there's
not much of seaweed there.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
Well, I mean that could be anywhere on the.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Coast gone, there's not been a lot of seaweed all right.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Where else? Do you have any interest in cruising?

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Oh? Yeah, I want to go on a cruise to Hawaii,
and I would love to go to just to Hawaii.
Oh I want to go to Tokyo or China. It
looks really cool there. There's just like so much tech
and stuff.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
So if we went on a vacation this summer, would
you want to take a friend or you like to
go by yourself so you can just kind of chill
and not have to entertain.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Take a friend.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
They always take a friend.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Huh, every single time. It's a lot more fun. And
like see, like it's fun to like hang out your
family sometimes until you start arguing when you have like
just one friend. Okay, so you can't bring more than
one friend. It just has to be one because then
everybody's gonna start arguing and it's just gonna be bad.

(11:28):
But if you bring one friend, you always get along.
That's something I know is growing up. Like if you
hang out with one friend, it's always fun, there's no arguing.
But then like when there's more than one.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
So if you take a friend, do you think that
your sibling should take a friend?

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (11:48):
A are you gonna include the sibling?

Speaker 1 (11:50):
No? Never, Well he's too he's too he's too little.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Yeah, there's a big age gap between you guys.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
Do you prefer the beach or mountains?

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Beach, beach or amusement park?

Speaker 1 (12:08):
It depends where the amusement park is, Like, if it's
in a warm place, definitely there.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Okay, So Panama City or Disney.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
World, Disney World still in Florida.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
Pool or beach.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Oh, the pool's got to be really good and there's
got to be like at least one slide for me
to pick it over the beach.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
What's one thing that you have to do on vacation
just to feel like it was it was an awesome vacation.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
You gotta go to the main attraction, like what that
place is known for. But if you go to like Disney,
you gotta go to the castle. Have to.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
So Disney, I mean Magic Kingdom? Yeah, okay.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
So if you go to Disney, would you want to
go and spend all day from the time they open
to the fireworks show?

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Or does it?

Speaker 3 (13:10):
Is it too long? Of a day.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
No, I'd love to do that. I love to stay
like a whole day at Disney.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
What is something that you dread about going on a trip?

Speaker 1 (13:22):
Leaving It's always the worst part because you're going to
miss it, oh.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
When you have to come back home.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Do you have a favorite memory from a past family vacation?

Speaker 1 (13:35):
Oh? Yeah, So me and Dare we swim out to
like the sandbar, like all the way out and I
found a conksholl with a with the what is it
a crab and conkshow or is it a snail?

Speaker 3 (13:51):
It's a crab.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
Yeah, we found a crab in a big old conkshow,
like the size of a water bottle because it was
a like spirally, it's really cool.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
What about when we go to the beach and we
rented a boat and went on to like all the
different islands.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
That was really fun. Yeah, we like cut crabs. Yeah, yeah,
that was really fun.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
What's your favorite snack for the car ride?

Speaker 1 (14:18):
A slushy? A slushy okay, race track pizza and just
Coca Cola gummies.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
Coca Cola gummy coladummies. All right, So as a teenager,
is it embarrassing to hang out with your parents on
the beach, not always, just sometimes, Like why would it
be embarrassing if he's aw hot? Girl?

Speaker 2 (14:48):
You said that you enjoy all the places that we
normally go on vacation. If it came between going to
a place that we've gone before that you enjoy going to,
or trying someplace totally new, which would you choose something new?
Is that because you're bored with the places we go
or you just want to try something.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
I just want to go to new places and try
new stuff. I'd rather do that.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
So you have ADHD?

Speaker 1 (15:17):
Right?

Speaker 3 (15:19):
Does your ADHD make it hard for vacations? Does it
make it more difficult on you? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (15:26):
Sometimes?

Speaker 3 (15:27):
Like how explain? Like is it hard in the car?

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (15:34):
Yeah, I can't sit still?

Speaker 3 (15:36):
Makes it hard to sit still?

Speaker 2 (15:37):
What about if we have to wait an hour or
so to have dinner?

Speaker 1 (15:44):
I get real bad anxiety. I don't know why, but
I feel I just feel trapped. If we're like waiting
in the same place for like a really long time,
I don't know, I get like really bad anxiety.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
But if you're having fun on the beach, you know,
surfing or whatever, skinboarding, how is your ADHD in an
environment like that?

Speaker 1 (16:10):
If okay, if I'm focused on like one thing, I
don't normally get distracted. But if it's like reading, I can't.
I like physically can't read because I get lost every
single time because I'm like focused on other stuff. But
if it's like, okay, building for some reason, like building

(16:31):
stuff and soccer, and usually when I want to be skinboarding,
I can. I can focus on that and drain everything out,
But everything else I can't.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
What about at Disney, like having to wait.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
In line and I can't. I can't sit still.

Speaker 3 (16:50):
But knowing that you're going to get to go on
the rock and roller coaster and you have to wait
for forty five minutes, is it worth it?

Speaker 1 (16:57):
I mean, in some instances, it just just depends on
how good the ride is, cause you know, the rids
aren't that long.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
Just being in a new place itself calls you anxiety,
just being in a different place other than home.

Speaker 1 (17:11):
No, not at all.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
All right, Chase, Well, thanks for being honest with us
and giving us your look at how we travel. It's funny,
it's honest and sometimes even heartfelt. But thanks for hanging
out with us today.

Speaker 2 (17:29):

without you. Thanks for coming on the show, of course.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
