(00:44):
All right, so, like I alwayssay, grab your drink, grab your
snack, whatever it is that yougrab when you listen to this, so
we can go ahead and jump in andget into this episode.
I um last year and I told y'alla couple episodes ago y'all
really enjoyed my back to schoolepisodes.
(01:08):
So I said this year I got to doa couple more episodes because
I felt like there was so muchstuff that was missed and
there's so much to cover, so I'mgoing to have to make it into a
longer series.
So I was debating.
I was like, should I startbefore the holiday or should I
start after the holiday?
But this particular topic, I'mlike I need to start this one
(01:29):
before the holiday because bythe time the holiday come it
might be a little bit too lateand I realized that not everyone
who listens child goes totraditional school, meaning they
don't start in August,september.
Some of them do year roundschooling, which means they
start in July.
So you know, I want to makesure I'm encompassing and I'm
(01:51):
getting all of my audience.
I don't want anybody to feelleft out.
I don't want anybody to be likeman.
This information came to me alittle too late, so let me go
ahead and give you thatinformation.
So one of the things that wealways forget about when school
starts back is paperwork andkids health Right, so I got my
(02:13):
notes today.
So we have to make sure thatour kids get physicals they have
shots sports physicals in thewhole nine yards physicals they
have shots sports physicals inthe whole nine yards.
So I have a couple of littlebullet points that I'm going to
talk about to help us getthrough this.
When I say this start now, because the longer that you wait
(02:38):
to make appointments, the lessappointments they're going to
have and you're just going tohave to take whatever they have,
or you're going to get caughtup going to an urgent care or
one of these places that you canget a school physical or sports
physical for $25 and $35.
And I 1000%, 1000% disagreewith that, because only your
(03:05):
child's doctor knows your doctor.
If you're going to a place likean urgent care or a place that
specializes in children'sphysicals, they don't know your
child as a whole.
This is like their first timecoming in and seeing their child
and they may not know yourchild's whole medical history.
They may not see any trends oranything like that.
And if, for some reason, yourchild may have need a specialist
(03:28):
or you know there was somethingthat their doctor was watching
or tracking, it may be missedbecause they're not going to
their doctor for their sportsphysical.
Now, one thing that I do is Istart.
(03:50):
If I'm going to make a physicalfor New Face, because he does
sports and because he needsannual physical, I'm going to
start in May, and I know you saythat's crazy.
Well, think about it like thisschool typically ends in may or
june and a physical is alwaysgood for 12 months.
So if I get it done in may,it's going to carry him all the
(04:12):
way to the next may and by maythere's typically not any sports
going on.
So that physical is going tocarry him throughout the year,
right, so that makes sense.
So if I don't get it done inMay, like this year, we he had
it done in June.
So you know well this month, soyou know.
So we have that out the way.
(04:33):
So I know he's good until nextJune.
And while I was there I wentahead and got his regular annual
physical and his sportsphysical done.
So we can kind of do.
I did kind of like a two forone.
When we went he didn't need anyshots, so that was a good thing
(04:55):
.
You know the closer you get,the less appointments they gonna
have and the less, like I said, the less flexibility it is
going to be.
So if you have the capabilityand the flexibility to, I would
recommend you go ahead and makeyour child's appointment.
Some places like I know they'lllet you make it.
(05:16):
If your child comes and made, they'll make it a yearly thing.
They'll be like we'll give youa date for next year and if for
some reason it don't work, justgive us a call and we can always
fix it.
So it's better to go ahead andhave that scheduled than to be
coming up school, get ready tostart back and you don't have
anything to offer your child, and then they don't get to play
(05:38):
sports or they can reject yourchild in school, depending on
certain grades, if your childdoes not have all of their
immunizations up to date.
One thing that I noticed thisyear on the packet for the
(05:59):
physical is they have a piece ofpaper that you do the regular
physical and then, if your childhas to go out to see a
specialist, there's anotherpaper attached as well.
And I'm like, wow, I'm likethey're really making it easy
for you.
So when you go to your doctor'soffice, just make sure you have
(06:22):
your paperwork with you.
Sometimes I put, like my son'sdoctor, I like brought the
paperwork, but she's like, oh no, she was like it's that time of
year where parents come in.
So she's like we typically makea lot of copies of that for you
guys, you know, just so youremember.
And I'm like, oh okay, likethat's cool, that's cool, that's
(06:42):
cool.
Another thing that I want to hiton is if your child takes the
medication, please, please, please, take the time to go and
(07:03):
get that taken care of.
New Face has asthma, but he'sin high school so he has
different rules.
There's paperwork forself-carry and then there's
paperwork for younger kids.
For you to keep that on file, the sooner you the better.
When I used to work at a school, I cannot tell you how many
times kids needed medication butbecause their parents lacked on
(07:24):
the paperwork, the parentswould have to come to the school
to give the child themedication or the child just
went all day without themedication that they needed,
which I don't recommend.
That is not safe.
That is not cool.
So if your child takesmedication, please ensure that
they have medication it's notgoing to expire within that
(07:46):
school year.
Make sure that you have thecorrect paperwork for it and
different things like that.
My little list went off.
Hold on y'all.
Just make sure you have all thepaperwork for your school and I
always recommend making a copyor taking a picture to have on
your phone.
That way you have a copy of.
(08:12):
Make sure you have a copy ofthat.
That way, if there's anyquestions about anything, you
have that to fall back andreference on.
You have that to fall back andreference on For children who
take medications or who have aspecial need or something like
that.
Sometimes there's extrapaperwork involved.
I know with New Face.
He has asthma, so not only doeshe have an inhaler at school,
(08:36):
but he also has an asthma actionplan that if you do this and
it's not working, then we needto do this, and if we do this
and this ain't working, this iswhat you need to do.
Make sure you have those typeof plans on file because, like I
said, working at a school, thelast thing we want to do is have
to call EMS for your childbecause your child ain't got the
(08:57):
medicine or whatever the casemay be.
You want to always try toprevent that.
One thing that I'm going tostart doing, because New Face is
in sports and he always has hisbag.
It's not a bad idea and I'mgoing to repeat this in another
(09:20):
episode as well.
When I start talking aboutprepping your kid to send them
back to school, make sure youmake a list of the medications
that your child takes, how muchthey take and how frequently.
That way, in the end, put itlike in their backpack or on
somewhere where it can beaccessed in the event that your
(09:43):
child is.
It should be on file already inthe office but say, for
instance, the child has asituation, they're on a field
trip or something and the childcannot.
You can't get that informationfrom the office.
Or you got to call somebody toget that information.
If it's already on your child'sperson, then that can get your
(10:04):
child in an unfortunatesituation.
If your child needs help whileon a field trip or something,
they have that information withthem.
Now, these is not rules andguidelines.
This is just what I do to helpget ready for the school year.
A lot of times, students who arekids that play sports, there's
(10:29):
a lot of paperwork that needs tobe filled out outside the
physical and you know that theyhave to do and sometimes it can
be time consuming.
Please, please, please, parents, make sure you give yourself
time.
I know with sports there's alot of things going on with
concussion protocol, withdealing with the heart,
(10:51):
cardiovascular and differentstuff like that that has to be
signed off by the doctor.
Parents, please do not waituntil the last minute.
Some of these places that Ihave seen that some like I've
gone to some of these places andread the signs on the wall
sometime.
Paperwork is a seven dayturnaround and you can't say,
(11:15):
well, look, jimmy finna startfootball tomorrow.
I need you to sign off on thispaper.
It's a seven day processbecause you got to think these
doctors, they have otherpatients, they can't just sit
here and go.
Okay, well, little Jimmy'sstarting football tomorrow, so
let me just go pull his medicalrecord, write his little stuff
down, because his parents wantedto wait until the last minute
(11:35):
to get his paperwork to us.
No, give the doctor's officeample time to get the paperwork
done and they'll tell you.
Sometimes it's 24 hours,sometimes it's 48 hours.
Like I said, I've seen it beseven days at time.
But just, you know, be patientwith the doctor's office because
your child is not the onlychild that they see.
Be patient and be lenient.
(11:58):
You know I'm not saying waittwo weeks for paperwork, but I'm
also saying you can't give itto them and be like I'm going to
sit here and wait for you tofinish it.
(12:20):
Um, because, like, I need ittomorrow, paperwork filled out.
That is not physical related.
So make sure that you keep thatin mind.
You're not taking a bag andit's not a lot.
I've seen like twenty fivedollars, I've seen 15.
I've seen thirty dollars.
I mean you are taking time awayfrom a physician or a nurse
(12:44):
practitioner, so just, it's justa little compensation for their
time.
Um, I cannot stress enough keepa copy, keep a copy.
I have so many copies.
Like I built a binder with allof the paperwork, like all the
(13:04):
back to school stuff.
Like I've built a binder tokeep all of that because I've
worked at a school and sometimespaperwork get a little lost.
Sometimes I ain't gonna holdyou, but as long as you have a
copy you can always give it tothe school to prevent it from
(13:24):
being lost.
So, outside of medical also, make sure you're taking time.
If you ask your kid like, canyou see that over there or can
you see that over there, makesure that they can see, because
I know a big problem with kidsis they start school and they
cannot see.
We only think, oh, I need totake them to the doctor to get a
(13:46):
physical.
Make sure you are making eyeappointments if necessary for
your child, because sometimesyou can get glasses and
appointments same day or it maytake a week.
Because sometimes you can getglasses and appointments same
day or it may take a week, butsometimes you have to order
glasses and stuff, and it cantake a little bit longer.
I know it can take up to twoweeks to get glasses and you
(14:08):
don't want your child to have tostart school and they can't see
anything because they don'thave their little glasses.
I know I need my little extraeyes because if I take this off
I could see the camera, but canthe camera see me?
I can't see nothing, like Ican't see my playback over here.
I can see it, but it's notclear.
(14:31):
So make sure you're gettingthose eye exams in there as well
.
Last but not least, dental.
Let us make sure that we aremaking dentist appointments for
(14:51):
our children as well, because wewant to make sure that they're
going back to school with good, healthy teeth, no toothaches or
anything like that.
You know they may have bingedon junk food this summer, so you
know you want to make sure youget those pearly whites clean
and I know dentist offices canbe backed up as well, so you
(15:13):
want to make sure you're doingthat in due time.
I know with New Face's dentist, when he be at dentist they make
the next six months already.
So it's like that and I'm goingto roll that in this next
portion into the.
You can't make this up.
(15:33):
So in making a dentistappointment, new face comes to
me last week and goes mom, I'mgetting a tooth.
And I'm like, boy you fit, whyis your teeth in?
This is crazy.
And he said I think my wisdomtooth is coming in and I was
like, wow, okay.
So he was like feel it.
(15:56):
And I was like if I put myfinger in your mouth and you
bite me like it's finna, go up.
So I felt it.
But he said I can't.
And I felt I was like yeah, there's a tooth coming in.
He said but I can't eat on thisside because it hurts, so so
bad.
So I said, okay, his dentist isvery flexible.
So I called the next day.
I said hey.
I said you know Lorenzo'shaving a little bit of pain, can
(16:17):
we?
Can he come in?
She's like, yeah, he can comein tomorrow.
Great.
So we go in and she's like, yeah, it looks like the tooth
kind of came through and it gotstuck and since it got stuck,
the gums tried to grow back overit, which created an abscess.
I said, okay, so she's likehe's going to need antibiotics
(16:39):
for about seven days.
I was like, all right, perfect,we get that taken care of.
She said, however, he going tohave to go see an oral surgeon
because the two teeth that wedidn't even come in for, she
said they're pushing on histeeth in the front and they're
pushing his teeth forward.
And I was like, oh my God, oralsurgeon.
I said, well, he going to haveto go night-night to get all
four of these out, because hegot one that's coming through,
(17:00):
two that's already out, pushingon the two in front of it, and
then one that's impacting and itcan't come out.
So we go to see the oralsurgeon y'all and I'm just like
I just see dollar signs BecauseI'm like this is fitting in
front of me Because insurancegoing see dollar signs, because
I'm like this is fitting infront of me because insurance
gonna pay.
They're gonna be like we'll doa little sprinkle, you can do
(17:21):
the rest.
So I'm like, all right, sothey're taking the images and
she said, well, she said I justthought I'll let you know he's
gonna have to have five teethtaken out.
I'm like five teeth, like whereyou come up with this extra
tooth from, like like I'mthinking you know, like there's
the wisdom teeth and then likemaybe the one in front of it
because the wisdom tooth haspushed it and cracked it.
(17:43):
No, she said he has an extratooth and I was like what do you
mean an extra tooth?
I was like I've never been toldas many years, even going to
dinner, never been told that hehas an extra tooth.
She was like let me pull theimage up.
She pulls the image up andvoila, right, there is the extra
tooth.
She was like let me pull theimage up.
She pulls the image up andvoila, right, there, it's the
extra tooth.
And I'm like OMG.
(18:04):
And so I'm looking at it andI'm looking.
I was like well, how come I'venever known that there was an
extra tooth between those twoteeth and they're the two teeth
in the front?
She said you know, the one thatthey do is like a panoramic or
something, and so it's kind ofalmost similar to a CT.
She said you want to know whyyou never seen it?
(18:25):
She said because on this imageit looks like that tooth is
between two teeth.
She said when actually that'snot true.
She said the tooth is under thetongue and I was like I know
you lie, how do you get a toothunder your tongue?
So he LJ chimes in and goes ohyeah, he said I feel that bump
all the time and I just thoughtit was just like a gum growth or
(18:46):
something.
It's a whole ass tooth.
So their number they're doingon a chart.
And so it's tooth 71.
And I said 71, wow, tooth 71.
Like that is crazy.
She, yeah, we just take whateverthe tooth is and add 50 to it.
Girl, what, what are youtalking about?
(19:07):
So now she's like yeah, so he'sgoing to have to have his four
wisdom teeth and his extra toothpulled out.
And then, by the way, did youknow that he has a tongue tie?
Ma'am, don't tell me nothingelse, okay, because this is a
full-term baby right here.
This boy is 39 weeks and fourdays.
(19:29):
He was a full-term baby.
So, like, what are you talkingabout?
A tongue tied, like he was afull-term baby, but why does he
have all these preemie problems?
Like I don't get it.
So then she was like um, yeah,we're gonna come up with his
treatment plan so we can getthis scheduled.
Um, and you know, we have thisprocess where the day of uh, we
(19:53):
draw blood and then we spin itdown and then we take the
clotting agents out and we putit back in the mouth to help for
healing faster.
And I'm like, okay, cool.
I was like, well, we gonna see,you know how this gonna go.
And she's so he's gonna getsedation, he gotta go.
He gotta go night night, I saidbecause baby can't take a paper
cut, so he gotta go night night.
(20:15):
So we sitting down and welooking at the treatment plan,
I'm like I look down, I'm likehe gotta get all of them out,
like at one time.
She's like yeah, so I was likeall right, cool.
So I'm looking, I was all right, cool, we take care of it.
And then I'm like I'm lookingat the and I said, is this
(20:35):
optional or is this somethingyou have to get?
She said no, it's optional.
It's just what the doctorrecommend.
It helps, you know, the it healfaster because it, you know,
instead of waiting for the bodyto create a blood clot, you know
we take the blood and create aclot, for it Helps with dry
socket, whatever.
Whatever.
I said no, I said we're going totake that off.
I said cause ain't no schoolright now, he could be at home
(20:57):
or I can monitor him, he cankeep his mouth clean.
And whatever.
I said he don't.
If it was during the schoolyear, yeah, I'd be like you know
, we'll do it, help him healfast, you know, so he don't miss
school or whatever like that.
He got the summer ahead of him,he not doing nothing anyway.
Well, he gonna have to miss alittle bit of swim'm not gonna
pay 301 for y'all to take someblood and, you know, spin it on
(21:20):
down and do like some putty withit and then pack his mouth with
it so it'll heal better.
Uh, he better take themstitches in that mouth where I
shouldn't go somewhere.
Three hundred dollars for themto take your blood, and in
advance, no, let your, let yourbody do what it needs to do,
like.
And then she's like, yeah, hecan't, he needs to be eating
(21:44):
food by the second day.
Um, cause, he's, he needs towork the muscles in his jaw.
I was like he's like, yes, Ican eat.
Give me some chicken nuggets.
Hold on a little grasshopper, you, you trying trying to, he
trying to go, he trying to gocrazy and eat food.
(22:04):
He don't understand.
He finna be El Miserable.
I mm-mm, no, mm-mm, my po' baby, my po' baby, my Poe baby.
I don't, no, all right, so wehave come to the end of the road
(22:31):
here.
I always forget I always forgeta song lyric of the week and I
