Speaker 1 (00:08):
Happy Friday everyone, Welcome or welcome back to another episode
of The Gist of It. I want it to be
the weekend so bad it has been a week. Today's Thursday,
July seventeenth. We're your co hosts. As per usual. I'm
Elan Hisslap.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
And I'm Steph Rotz. Ready for that summer Friday.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Ready for the summer Friday, Baby, that summer weekend. We're ready,
and we are also so ready because there's a lot
happening this weekend. The Open is happening on the Men's
Gulf Side, which is one of the majors this year
taking place in the UK, which I'm so excited to watch,
But it's also WNBA All Star weekend and that's what
(00:48):
we want to dive into today. I am actually catching
a flight to Indianapolis this.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Morning for all the fun.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
I'm going to be there Thursday to Sunday, and I'll
try my best to share on my stories so at
ellen etaists are on the just stories on my Instagram.
But also I'm going to try to share as much
as I remember, as much as I can for us
to share on the next podcast. But we want to
provide you with a full preview of the All Star
(01:17):
Weekend now, and we want to talk about the skills competition,
the three point contest, but also the All Star Game
and the reason. Normally I'm a hater of an All
Star Weekend, I'm a hater of an All Star game,
but I will say I think that the WNBA treats
it differently, and they know that everyone has attention on
their game, and so I find that the players tend
(01:40):
to try perhaps a little bit more, not their hardest,
but try a little tiny bit more.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
And then there's money on the line too, which means
something for sure for these players. So WNBA the exception,
not the rule when it comes to All Star Weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yeah, and it's like, again, they're not going to be
playing their hearts, so they don't want to get in
on Saturday, So I don't expect any of that, but
they do want to showcase the game.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
H And while that's all happening, we've got All Star
Weekend happening in the background.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
What's also happening.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Is while they're in Indie, the league's best we'll meet
face to face with the WNBA officials for the first
in person negotiations regarding the new Collective Bargaining Agreement or
the CBA. We did talk about this before in episode
four hundred and seventy four. Things are not going super
well in those negotiations, kind of as to be expected
(02:35):
with the early rounds, but this meeting, tying up with
All Star weekend just really showcasing how exciting it is
to be a WNBA fan.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
There's a lot riding on India, so what's going yeah
this weekend. And I do wonder if Indy can handle
the heat. I am trepidacious about heading to Indiana in
the middle of July. I do not handle the heat well,
and so I'm very nervous about the life there to
walk into.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
It's hot, it's worse than hair.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
What what I wonder is the humidity and so and
it's always so hard to pack for these things because
there's meetings, there's the game there.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
You have to like look good, you can't sit exactly.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
You have to hope that your skin stays together so
that you don't hopefully have to wear that much makeup
so that you're not sweating your foundation off. Although I'm
sure that there's some really great foundations out there, but
I am I just I don't love the heat, so
we'll see.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
I think you'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
I'm looking at the weather right now and it's actually
going to be better than what you're living in right now.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
You'll be fine. BLUs Okay, Yeah, I love that.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
And before we get into our one big thing, which
is talking about the CBA, which is talking about the
All Star weekend, I want to call an audible and
I want to call an audible because I had the
pleasure to chat with Dallas Wings icon Arique Ogumba Walle
earlier this week.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
I'm obsessed with her.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
I first, and I feel like a lot of people
first saw her in the NCAA and in that March
Madness tournament where she was clutch literally shooting three point
winner after a three point winner, and then she went
to the Dallas Wings and history has been made since then.
And we had the opportunity to chat with her thanks
to our friends at Icy Hot and everything that they're
(04:30):
actually doing with some really great charity work right now.
But we also got to ask questions about what it's
like to have Paige Beckers on the team, what it's
been like for a riku to step into this veteran role,
how she has handled injury and setbacks.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
And who she.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Thinks is the most overlooked player in the WNBA.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
So it was fun.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Oh so excited for that. So without further to doo,
here is that interview.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Arique. Welcome to the gist of it. Thank you so
much for joining us.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Yes, of course, thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Oh my gosh, literally anytime we are chatting with you today,
partially because of your partnership with Icy Hot and the
Shaquille O'Neill Foundation. You're in Rockwell, Texas right now because
of the six Comeback court is about to open. Why
is this initiative so important to you?
Speaker 4 (05:18):
It's you know, it's in my city, well my second city.
I'm from Milwaukee, but this has been home to me
for the last seven years. And just being able to
give back to the community they give so much to
you know, myself and the rest of my teammates and
just support us, you know, day in and day out,
regardless of anything that's going on. So just you know,
when I was able to partner with Icy Hot and
then hearing that they're putting the court in Dallas, like
(05:40):
of course, you know I was going to be excited
for that. Because it's just another way to give back
and give back to the youth and just let them
find a home and a court for them to play
on and have fun.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Oh I love that.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
That's so great and I feel like it's synonymous with
you that city. I feel like you think about it
and you think, Okay, this is a rique's place.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
And speaking of.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
The Wings had the number one pick in this past
year's draft, and as we all know, you picked up
Page Beckers when you found out that Dallas received the
number one pick. I loved your tweet you said, I
just fell to my knees. Thank you Lord. What has
it been like playing with Beckers this year and playing
with the number one draft pick?
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Yeah, it's been great. You know, she's elite and just
you know, being able to get her and bring her
to the team and just built with her. I know
it's year one, but I see a bright future with
her and Dallas Wings. So just being able to start
that relationship and just get her on the team and
you know, everybody just gelling together, it's been great.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
I'm so curious too. I feel like you're really the
clear cut veteran on the Wings now, which is kind
of wild. To say, you being a veteran in the
league at this point, how has Page coming on and
other players coming into the wings in the franchise. How
has that kind of developed your role on the team
as well.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Yeah, it's a lot of new you know, so new
new coaches, new players. I think only three players have
come back, and you know, a lot of changes in
the organization. So you know, we're all learning at the
same time, learning each other. Nothing is what it was before,
but that's okay. We're all growing and learning. So just
you know, embracing this, uh, just embracing this growth, embracing
(07:18):
this change has been good.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
It is no secret Riyque that women's basketball is booming.
It feels like every single day there's a new headline.
There's so much engagement, so many new fans in the league.
It's really exciting. There's so much well deserved coverage, and
I am wondering amidst all this coverage, though, whose game
you think is being overlooked and whose game should be
covered more by the media.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
That's a great question. I I mean, I'll have to
say a team mat I'll probably say Lee. She's been
playing really well since she got to us, and Uh,
I don't think she really gets the credit that she deserves,
you know, especially being that big, being able to pop,
being able to shoot, get to the basket. So just
watching her up close and being her team, she's been
really elite. So you know, hopefully she gets a little
bit more recognition for that.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Yes, watching her last night was really exciting to see
that matchup too. And you had been sidelined for a
couple of weeks with a thumb injury before returning yesterday,
And during the time you were out, the Wings started
four rookies for a bunch of games.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
When you're out, what are what's your role?
Speaker 1 (08:23):
What are you thinking about as you're kind of that
player watching and kind of seeing what they're doing.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
How are you what are you doing when you're out?
Speaker 1 (08:32):
But supporting the team on the court.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
Yeah, just being a voice, same voice as if you
know I was on the court. Obviously, starting four rookies
is tough because regardless, I mean, starting you know as
year four, year five is already tough. So I know,
starting as a rookie is tough. But just you know,
being that support anything that they need and just you know,
hopping them up and you know, just being there being
that voice for them for sure. It is definitely the
(08:56):
main role. When you're sidelined with energy or with injury.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
You're known to get buckets, and there's so many different
ways that you score points. What is your favorite way
to score a bucket?
Speaker 4 (09:13):
I can't even say there's a favorite any anyway the
defense gives for sure, I'm gonna take.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
That anytime you get score a bucket.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
Last thing, kind of bringing everything back to what we
were talking about at the beginning, You're from a family
of athletes. Your brother plays football for the Houston Texans.
Your mom was a collegiate athlete, so sports, at least
from the outside, it seems to have always been such an
integral part of your life. And with that in mind,
how is this park and everything that you're doing with
(09:43):
Icy Hot and the foundation.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Going to change the game for kids in the community.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Yeah, I just it just takes me back to my
childhood and just cause I had uh a neighborhood part
that I would go to and there's a lot of
memories there and and I feel like I grew a
lot just being able to play play free and play
with guys and girls like a mix of whoever was
at the court, that's who you were playing with, young
or old. So just for the youth to have that
opportunity to kind of grow in those more relaxed settings.
(10:10):
But even though it's still competitive, it's more relaxed, it's
still play time. So just allowing that outlet for young
kids to have, you know, in especially in the cities
that I see hot, it is put in the courts
in especially, and I'm just glad to be a part
of that.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Last one. Who's winning the All Star Game this weekend?
What team?
Speaker 4 (10:31):
I don't even know the teams whenever team's page is.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
On whatever team spoken like a true teammate. I love it, Arique,
Thank you so much for joining the gist of it.
It's been such a pleasure to chat with you. Congrats
on everything that you've accomplished, both on and off the court,
and hope to stay in touch.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
Thank you, appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Guys. We're about to get to our one big thing.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
But I think one big thing that I took away
from that interview with the Rique she rides hard for
page love that it's really cool to see how much
their friendship has developed in such a short period of time.
I mean who knows, maybe they were friends before this too,
but she rides so hard for Paige and it was
(11:22):
really interesting as well.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Steph.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
I saw a presser I think earlier was it at
the end of last week or earlier this week where
the Dallas Wings head coach was kind of talking about
things that could have done better. Da la la la,
and Paige didn't interrupt him, but kind of after he
was done his answer, she went right to the journalist
and was like, actually, to answer your question, I would
(11:44):
like to add this, And it was her kind of
sticking up for her teammates, and so I feel like
she's also just done such a great job going into
that organization. And I think that it was Gino Ariyamar
maybe with somebody else a Gino being her head coach
at Yukon saying the best thing about Pagebeckers is what
great a teammate she is and how she's able to
get the most out of people. And just seeing Erique,
(12:07):
I don't know again, go that hard for her so quickly.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
It made me have a lot of joy.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
I love it when teammates ride for each other, and
I think that also is a little teaser maybe to
what we're about to talk about with the WNBA All
Star Weekend, because, as you know, there is a game
and we'll get to that in a bit. But the
two team captains did build their own teams, and so
we will talk about riding for their teammates a little bit.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
H I love it.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Before we get into the en court in the All
Star weekend, let's talk about the collective Bargaining Agreement and
the negotiations between the WNBA and the Players Association. Again,
this is a little bit of a recap of what
we talked about in episode four seventy four. So if
you haven't had a chance to listen to it, we're
going to give you the gist now, but if you
want a deeper dive, please go back and listen to that.
(12:54):
I think that you will find it interesting, or.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
We hope you find it interesting.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
So I've mentioned already negotiations between the league and the
WNBA Players Association will resume today, so Thursday in Indianapolis.
According to New York Liberty Star Brianna Stewart, who's also
a friend of the gist, she said, quote, it's going
to be spicy end quote, And I can't believe that
she said.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
That are you surprised though, This is the this is
the player that would just put a string of emojis
in a tweet kind of alluding to where she might
end up during free agency. So she's known for baiting us.
She knows how to write a hook.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
You know what.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Stuie does have a flare for the dramatic, and I
feel like we don't give her enough credit for it. Yeah,
because she is sometimes low key, But then you're totally right.
She loves a little I Got you moment, a little
cheeky moment, getting the media going, getting people hyped up.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
And she knows when to do it. You know, she
times it well. She times it well when she was
moving team. She's timing it well for the CBA, because
the two entities reportedly remained far apart on negotiations heading
into the weekend. So saying something like it's going to
be spicy, you're really garnering support, I would feel for
your side. You're getting the fans to really rally with you.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
We need to give Stewy more credit for that.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
She knows what she is doing, and you know what,
we are playing right into the problem of her hand
because the players did reject the league's initial proposal because
the league wasn't quote entirely responsive to their goals. The
WNBA Players Association President and seattlestorm icon Neko Guombuque laid
out the players' union's goals at the beginning of the season,
(14:30):
which include bringing revenue sharing thresholds to realistic level, higher salaries,
and then other areas of negotiation, which is like locking
in charter travel, increasing roster sizes from twelve to thirteen,
which to me feels small. I would love to see
twelve to fifteen. That would be awesome, and then improve
family planning and retirement benefits. The other thing is that
(14:52):
there are draft age limits that they're also talking about.
It's currently at twenty two, and so I wonder if
they're trying to sit, you know, the NBA has an opportunity.
NBA players have an opportunity to go into the NBA.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
After that first year.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Is there an opportunity for the WNBA players or potential
WNBA players do the same.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
And I think with that roster number going from twelve
to thirteen or at least that's what they're advocating for.
This is a huge piece when we're talking about expansion.
A lot of current players were advocating for larger roster
sizes before expanding the league, and as we know, the
league did massively expand or announce massive expansion plans, with
(15:35):
those recent teams being added having a two hundred and
fifty million dollar expansion fee. And so what the players
are saying is that there should be a growing metric
for revenue, staring when we're looking at these huge, huge
numbers for expansion.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
And they're also saying, Okay, if we're looking at these
huge numbers for expansion, we're looking at these major media deals,
our salaries should increase. Supermax deals are worth two hundred
and forty nine thousand, two hundred and forty four dollars annually.
But there's a one point five million dollars salary cap
that's split between a team that has to pay about
twelve players. That would not even happen at all on
(16:12):
the men's side, you know what I mean, Like some
of the worst players who barely actually end up playing
an entire season would make one point five million. There
is a different in game amount, there's a different revenue.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
Like we know all of that. They know all of that.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Again, they're not asking for equal pay. They play about
half the games in comparison to the NBA, but I
think that they're still looking for something more that reflects
the value that they're driving. But we do need to
talk about the league side, Steph, because we have to
be we're libras, we're balanced, we have to be talking
about the league and the players.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
So let's talk about that.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Commissioner Kathy Engelbert is confident a transformational deal will be done,
which is a pretty bold word to get It is
a big word, that's pretty big. But the Players Association
executive director isn't entirely optimistic about that. She says she's
hoped for more progress heading into All Star weekends. So
that is those two statements are at odds with each other.
(17:09):
Many players haven't exactly ruled out the league's first ever lockout,
so again that is teasing or saying that they're not
opposed to a lockout, and the league saying that they're
ready for a transformational deal. We're clearly at odds here.
We're a long way from a lockout that would happen
after the deadline date for this, which is the end
(17:30):
of October twenty twenty five. But it is on the
table and hopefully progress will be made this upcoming weekend
in Indie.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
Very important weekend.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
So that's that for the off court, it's going to
be spicy, and you know what else is going to
be spicy everything that is happening on court. So we're
going to break things down as per the weekend schedule.
So the scales competition starts at a PM on Friday,
and then the All Star Game starts at eight thirty
pm Eastern on Saturday, a bit late.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
I have to say, I would have loved the seven o'clock.
You were thinking the exact same thing. I know. I
know in La think about those people, and.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
I guess it's seven local in India.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
I don't know. My calendars are My calendar's all out
of sorts.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
I'm going to be arriving to every single event an
hour early because I put everything on the Eastern time
in my calendar.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
I'm an absolute mess right now. But you know me,
you do. You are not a mess. You do your
best and nobody is okay.
Speaker 1 (18:30):
I'm less of a mess at work. I'm fully a
mess in my personal life. Yeah, you always, I always,
I'm I feel like I'm a good friend, but I'm
not good to myself, like I don't book things when
I should be booking things, Like I didn't don't tell
my dentists. I didn't see a dentist for like four
years and then I was like, oh my god, I
(18:51):
need to book a dentist appointment. And then I went
to them and I lied because I felt so bad.
They were like, when did when were you last at
the dentist And I said, oh, like maybe a year
and a half, two years ago. And they said, oh
my gosh, we thought that you would have been only
eight months ago. Your teeth look amazing.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Oh my gosh, Ellen, good job, Thank you so much.
And I said, I'm gonna wait another four years for
the next morning.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
So they say to go every eight months or whatever.
It's been a year and a half again because I flus.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
Yeah, they lizing is huge.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Yeah, So anyway, that's just an example. But there's like
a lot and a long it took me five years
ago a family doctor. Like there's a lot of things
going on. But what's great for me this weekend, it's work.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
So I'm gonna be dialed in, so let's talk. Be
locked in the ad.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
The Skills Challenge at eight pm Eastern Atlanta. Dream Guard
Alicia Gray is the defending champion in both events, so
that is the Skills Challenge and the Three Point Contest.
She took home all of the one hundred and fifteen
thousand dollars prize.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
Pack last year, which is huge.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Her winnings were sixty two percent of her one hundred
and eighty five k WNBA salary, and that's part of
the re why these w NBA players show out because
they're not making a ton of money in their salary,
so this is a great way for them to get paid.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
The prize pool is huge.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
You want to wage, especially like you're not going to
injure yourself in the skills competition. Hopefully it's cross knock
on wood.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
You know.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
If they're not if they're not Ellen playing pick a ball,
my god.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Don't know. Sorry, you're not supposed to help people that.
Oh it's like how I.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Told people I got my first concussion from hockey when
it was walking into a door.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Exactly. There you go. Everyone knows. Now we're even.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
Okay, we're even, We're even. And Alisha Gray, sorry, just
we're jumping over that. Alicia Gray is competing in both the.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
Events again again, Wow, amazing. So let's talk about the
Skills Challenge itself. It is a timed obstacle course where
competitors will dribble, pass, and shoot, and the two players
with the fastest times in the first round advance to
the final round. So let's talk about who is actually
competing this year. We've already said Alisha Gray with the
Atlanta Dream but also we have Natasha Cloud who is
(21:01):
with the New York Liberty, now, Skyler Diggins with Seattle Storm,
Erica Wheeler with Seattle Storm as well, and Courtney Williams
with the Minnesota Linx.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
This is gonna be so fun to watch. Do you
want to pick a winner?
Speaker 1 (21:15):
I want to go with Alisha Gray. I think that
she's ready. I think that she's ready to win this again.
I think all of them are great, and that is
why all of them are competing in this. I would
love to see Alicia Gray win again. And I would
also love to see Natasha Cloud win.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Yes, actually, Cotney.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
Williams too, she loves that bat any of these people. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
Erica Wheeler two. I was on a panel with her
earlier this year and I absolutely loved her and she
was supposed to compete las year, which she couldn't make
it because of flight issues. So I really hope that
she's okay this year. I don't know, they're all so good,
but no, I'm saying, alisiha.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Gray, let's go.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
And AFLAC is matching the contributions to the winning pool
this year. Oh wow, So sixty K will be given
to three point contest winner and fifty five K to
the skills winner.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Okay, so let's talk about the three point contest. It
is a two round event where players shoot three point
shots from seven different places around the court. And I
think that there's going to be a four point shot
or something like that this year. There's five main shooting
locations around the three point line, with five balls at
each station. There's also money balls, which are worth two
(22:24):
points for each of those that are made. So you
have to be really strategic in this three point contest because.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
You get to pick where your rack of money balls
go at what location, So they're so be prepared as
a viewer to see that money rack move around because
it's up to the players depending on where they believe
their strongest. If it's the corner straight on forty five
degree and or where they're going to put that moneyball rack.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
It's so interesting to also see what players like what locations,
and I do wonder if other players or other teams
are kind of scouting that at the same time to
kind of be like, Okay, this is where she's shooting
from most often on the court.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
So let's talk about who is going to be competing.
We have Sonia Citron of the Washington Mystics, Caitlyn Clark
of the Indiana.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Fever, Alicia Gray.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
We already talked about her, Sabrinian Nescue of the New
York Liberty, and Kelsey Plum of the La Sparks. I
think a lot of people are thinking that Caitlyn Clark
will win this. She hit a WNBA rookie record of
one hundred and twenty two threes last season, but it's
still unclear she's gonna be participating.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Yeah, she's got a new injury after her other injury.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
So a lot of soft tissue stuff. Oh how does
that work? Oh, it just seems to me.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
And that's a lot of soft tissue stuff, Like it's
a tweak to the hamstring, it's a tweak to the
groy and it's an issue with a quad like it's not,
which which makes me even more nervous than like, oh,
she broke her leg and that's something that you repair
and do whatever. It seems like there's something nagging a
little bit with her where her body's one hundred.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Interesting.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
The other thing, too, Steph, is that Sabrina Unescu like
she is a sharp shooter. She is such a good
three point shooter. We saw her in the NBA All
Star Three point Shooter. She almost defeated Steph Curry and that,
and she did so much better than all of these
NBA players shooting at their line as well. And so
I think that I think that it could come down
(24:25):
to sab plus someone else. And I really don't know
in this list who it could be, but I think
SAB's going to be up there.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
And it's important to note here too that Sabrina and
Escue did not compete last year in twenty twenty four,
when there's a great one, so putting that out, yeah.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
That's a big one.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
And then let's sneak into the main event, the All
Star Game itself. It's Saturday at eight thirty pm Eastern
and what you alluded to, Steph is really cool. So
the NHL did like the Four Nations Cup. Next year,
the NBA is is doing Team USA versus Team World.
The WNBA basically said, here are the two top players
(25:03):
as voted, and they are each going to be a captain,
and then they pick their own team. So it's Team
Collier and a Fisa Collier of the Minnesota Lynks, or
its team Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
And the WNBA did that last year. They did Tam
USA versus Team.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
WNBA and lead up to the Summer Olympics.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
So they also have they've already been there, done that
with that point they've done.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
They did it first before the NBA did it. And
this is where the four point shot was. Sorry, I
got confused with the Yeah, this is where the four
point is and you were trying to fact check me there,
but we're going.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
To fact I was waving my hand around, but yeah, sorry,
I ignored you.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
It's okay, that's okay. You would get there. You would
get there eventually. Something that I'm really excited about for
this is during offensive possessions in the alcer game, they
can switch off make live play substitutions like hockey.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
There are no.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Rules around how and when and why in terms of
making that actually happen in practice. But I think that's
going to be really fun for me to watch personally.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
Fascinating. That's so interesting, you know. And I played quidditch
now it's rebranded go to quadball because FJK Rowling.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
You do that in.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
Quadball too, Yeah, I have to, but you're all wearing
the same color. You have to wear the positions all
wear the same certain colors because you can only tackle
people who are also your position.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
And it was really chaotic, but it was so fun.
That is chaotic.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
You know what It's also chaotic is I can't stop
thinking about how everything else will play out in the
w NBA after Team Clark and Team Collier made their
selecs because they obviously had to pick starters, and then
they had to pick reserves, and then there's people that
didn't get picked, and I always wonder how.
Speaker 3 (26:43):
That goes over socially.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
But what I do love is that Caitlin Clark picked
her teammate as her first pick, Aliah Boston, and I thought,
I love that. I love when teams ride for each
other and I.
Speaker 1 (26:54):
Love that Nafisa Collier choose Brianna Stewart, who she founded
Unrivaled with and who she's all so vice president with
in the Players Association.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
Those two ride for each other. You can tell that
they are besties.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
And I actually love it too, because I loved seeing
Minnesota play against the New York Liberty and that friendship
play against each other. But then getting them having the
opportunity to actually play with your best friend would be
so nice because they're so used to playing against each
other that I really love it. I also found it
so interesting that if Yousa Collier decided to take page,
(27:29):
Beckers and Clark just kind of stayed away from it.
And the Beckers and Clark matchup? Was it early last
week's stuff that did members that did numbers on ABC,
A lot of people tuned in, And so I do
think that Clark and Collier probably work together on that
to make sure that they were on two separate teams
to potentially drive more of that tune in and that
(27:49):
Beckers versus Clark match up again.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Did you see what people were saying online about Clark
and Becker's outfits for that particular game. No, so Clark
woarred this fantastic massive suit to the game and Becker's war.
I'm going to like make myself sound like good nerd
but like streetwear.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
Yeah, to the game.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
And so people said, that's your mom picking up your
your teen son at school because they've done something bad.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
In the principal's office. That's so interesting.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
It's so funny that you say that, because I think
Mariah Rose, one of my favorite influencer follows.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
She was talking about one day.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
She was like, we got to talk to Caitlin's people
because they are putting her in old clothes, but also
she seems like she's an old soul at the same time,
like she might be into that.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
What are you going to be looking for this weekend?
What are you most looking forward to?
Speaker 3 (28:42):
Oh, I'm just looking to have fun.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
And I'm also excited because Sidney Colson is doing her
first ser stand up.
Speaker 3 (28:48):
Routine this weekend.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
Like, I am excited for on court stuff, but I
am still a bit of a hater for the actual
All Star Game itself. So I am more excited for
the skills competition in the three point contests.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
There's so much going on around it too.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
If you're in d right, Like there's so many activations,
other things going on besides the actual's two things that
we just talked about, and.
Speaker 1 (29:08):
Like it's so cool seeing all the stars in one
place like that is always going to be amazing.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
It's always going to be better.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
Than any NBA All Star than any normal NHL season,
also than any NFL Pro Bowl. It's always going to
be better than that. But I say it's just not
for me.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
It's time for our personal training SASH. This is where
we answer your hard hitting questions about anything, and we

your hot takes, whatever it is you want to share
with us. We want to either respond to or just
react to m or rant about.
Speaker 1 (29:50):
If you'd like to be featured on a future episode,
please call and leave us a voicemail at one four

can click on that number on the show notes. You
can email us at pod at the Sports dot com
or message us on Instagram at ellen Ethangist or at
Stephanie rots So. In today's personal training session, we are
(30:12):
taking a question from Chloe in Australia. Okay, Chloe, we
have gone global. We are overseas, we are around the world.
We are in Australia, Darling.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
Okay, so I'm gonna read it right, okat and this
is cho Choe.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
Chloe messaged me on Instagram.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
Okay, hi there, my name is Chloe and I'm a
big fan of the show. I love your new layout
and the personal training session. Was hoping I could get
yours and stuff's advice. I am from Australia and am
loving all your content on American based sports Bracket, NFL, Baseball, etc.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
And Bracket.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
I would love to get more into the sports, but
was wondering where would be a good place to start.
What would someone do to get to know players and
understand the rules and lore of a new sport. Love
everything you guys do for women's sports and hope you
have amazing weeks.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Chloe, thank you so much for dming us again. It's
so freaking cool that we have listeners around the world
and not Australia. And also, Chloe, good on your mate
for learning all of these new sports, you know what
I mean. Like, I think that it would be very
unique if someone in the US or someone in Canada
(31:24):
was like, I want to learn more about oz rules football,
and so I feel like this is very cool. So
thank you Chloe for putting in that work.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
You know what I learned recently what Australians freeze their
orange slices? Boy, and then they So I was playing
soccer in a heatwave, which I love to talk about.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
You know, it's my number one personality.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
It's my number one personality train now and one of
the opposing teammates came over and she said, and she's
Australian and she said, in Australia we freeze our ratnch
splices and then that way like they're cold and.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
Ready to go and has smarter than us.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Yeah, I answered doing that, So thank you Australia.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
They're that heat anyway. Chloe.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
This is such a great question, and it's actually part
of why we founded the Just when you're talking about
learning the rules, understanding the lore, getting into this new community,
all of that sort of stuff, I think we truly
understand that sports should be for everyone, whether you're die
hard fan or you're new to a league, and we
(32:26):
curate all of our content on social, our podcast, and
our newsletter to reflect that. And I think that there's
a couple of things that I would recommend is that
on our website, and they might be a little bit
old at this point, but we do have guides, glossaries
and FAQs on all the major sports. So if you
go to our website, you'll see different tabs on basketball
(32:47):
or volleyball, or the NFL or baseball, and you can
kind of look into those to see and again there's
common questions that we answer. There's glossaries on things like
what an RBI is, all that sort of stuff, and
then we give you some of the background and then
from there to stay up to date on some of
the lore, I would say, subscribe to our newsletter. I'm
(33:09):
sure you follow us on socials because you DMed me,
But if you're not subscribed to our newsletter yet, check
it out at the disport dot com. It's totally free
and that will keep you familiar with all the sports,
but also what our team. And our team is so good.
They do such an amazing job at linking out to
past references so that more new fans to sports can
(33:30):
dive deep when they need.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
To dive deep.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
But those who kind of already know what's happening, they
don't need to click into links, and so you'll see
links within different articles that will drive you, hopefully in
the right direction to learn more.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
And Allen is also always recommending NFL Netflix shows and things,
so there's also so much great content out there too
from a TV standpoint that I'm sure would also help
you get into all of the lore behind the things. Yeah,
of course subscribe.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
That's such a good point, Steff.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
And the other thing that I would recommend, if you
really want to get deep into something, I would say,
choose a city or choose a team and kind of
start understanding that team's lore from there. If you want
to go with Boston, there's a really great Netflix documentary
called The Comeback that will give you the lore though,
of all of the background on the Curse of the
(34:22):
Bambino and give you the background on where Boston is
sitting in the Major League Baseball landscape and all that
sort of stuff. I right now and stuff. I'm so
glad that you brought up TV because I literally started crying.
I was so embarrassing. I started crying when I was
watching the third season of The Quarterback. So Quarterback is
out now on Netflix. It's actually the second season Quarterback,
but third season of Peyton Manning's like broadcast production company
(34:48):
doing this, Omaha Production is doing this, So it's quarterback.
Then I was receiver and announced back to quarterback, and
I cried during the intro credits.
Speaker 3 (34:55):
I love that. I was so excited.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
I've only ever done that for Harry Potter before, and
now I'm like, oh my god.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
What's wrong with me? I'm so obsessed with football.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
But I really love quarterback because you don't have to
literally know anything about the NFL, but you can watch
these guys and these individual quarterbacks and learn how they train,
understand how they study, look at the systems that they
work in, and most importantly, get to know them as
personalities and get to know them as people and partners
and teammates.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
And then it helps you.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
Kind of choose a team and follow them for the
rest of the season. And so things like quarterbacks, things
like hard knocks, things like that, I think really are
so helpful.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
The storytelling really does hook you into a sport too,
so once you learn all the nuts and bolts, then
you can start diving into more of those storylines.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
Such a good point anyway, Chloe, thank you so much
for typing in. As we would say, we really appreciate it,
and we think that that marks at the end or
it is a great end to today's We hope fun
episode is a really positive episode.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
We'll be back in your feed with the new podcast
on Tuesday and with Ellen's experience from the All Star weekend,
so we're really excited to hear that. In the meantime,
if you enjoyed this episode, we would absolutely love if
you could rate, review, and subscribe and send us those
d ms and or voice sounds.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
I hope I have a voice come next week, you know,
because you're gonna lose your voice. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
Ellen likes to party and Ellen loses her voice and
I love to talk. You're in the right spot, yeah,
you monetize that.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
This episode is edited by Savannah Help and produced by
Lisa Minotillo and Alessandra Puccio.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
Again, I'm Ellen Hislab.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
And I'm Steph Ratts and we will be backing your
feet on Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (38:00):
You have to beat get enough.
