Speaker 1 (00:08):
Happy Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Junior sports fans, Welcome or welcome back to another episode
of The Gist of It.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Today's Thursday, December fourth. We're your co hosts. I'm Ellen Hisslap.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
And I'm Steph rat and I really need it to
be the weekend this week.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's been one of those weeks. I don't know if
you're feeling like that too.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
I actually need it to be. Let me pull up
the calendar December twenty second, because that's what I'm off work.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Checks notes December twenty second. I f with that too.
I feel like that's fine.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
We don't want to wish away time, though, though, do
because that the closer we get to the end of
the year, the closer I get to officially becoming a mom,
and I go.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
How did we get here?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
I am so excited for you, Thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
I'm so excited as well, and I'm so excited that
you're excited.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
So we were discussing before we hit record that I'm
gonna take up knitting because I really miss crafting, and
so I'm so happy that I have a baby in
my life that I could potentially knit things for.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Oh my gosh, that would be amazing. You're so welcome
to knit things for her. I feel like, because we
haven't decided on a name yet, well do you can?
You can you knit names into things?
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Is that a thing that you knit? Or is that too?
Is that too?
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Do?
Speaker 1 (01:20):
That'd be too high level for you?
Speaker 3 (01:22):
I think people can. I don't think I'm there yet.
I haven't picked up a knitting needle quite yet.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
But I so, I haven't quite picked up a knitting needle.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
But but you know what, stuff, You're so smart and
you pick up things so fast.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
That's so kind of you. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
That's it's just true, not true.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
No, you know that Taylor Swift lyric something about like
I've never been a natural, but all I do is try, try, try.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
That's me.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
You do you. I do have to say.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
You work so hard and you do try so hard,
and you have been like that since you were a
little kid.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
You were like, was I the worst backward skater as
a child on my hockey team?
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (02:00):
Yes I was?
Speaker 3 (02:02):
But was I the worst when I stopped playing before
I went to university?
Speaker 2 (02:05):
No I was not. No, that's so funny that you
say that about yourself, because I feel like that has
You've always tried so hard because you I feel like
you have that ability and that talent that gets you
into the conversation. And then you're like, but wait, I
actually have to try really hard in order to get
to the level that I want to get to.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Oh you Ever, there was always those people on various
sport teams that were just so effortless, to the point
where they could just not show up for a week
and it wouldn't bother them and whatever. And I always thought,
what's it like, was that you you're you're effortless when
it comes to.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
It depends on the sport.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
I feel like, I feel like with team sports, I
feel pretty good. Actually, with a decent amount of sports,
I feel good except for Ultimate Frisbee.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
I don't know what happened there.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Badminton though, we discussed that.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Don't even talk to me about badminton, Like, yeah, nobody
wants to play because I loved badminton.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
No, I felt I felt pretty good, but I still
had to try.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
But like i've I felt probably the most comfortable in
my life when I was playing.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Sports, And you're yeah, and everything else kind of came
natural too, too, though, right what no no public speaking
natural ingrained in me. Actually I came out of the
room with the mic.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yeah exactly. I was like, the tiny ones, here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
I always wanted to be a sportscaster, so I was like,
I have to be good at public speaking, right, and
look at us now we're basically I mean, we created
our own podcast so that I could.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Live out my childhood dream.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
This is all very exciting things, and it is also
very exciting Steph because we have to talk about Formula one.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
We haven't had an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
To try about F one in a hot minute, but
shit is going down right now. It is so dramatic
and as a lot of my F one girlies know,
the final race of the season is this weekend, the
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which starts Sunday at eight am
Eastern And I know waking up on the weekend that
early is not the vibe, but I promise you try
(04:03):
to wake up at eight am. It is legitimately going
to be worth it, especially because the start of F
one races are absolute chaos. There has been so much
going on when we would have last checked in, and
I think when we would have been, you know, covering
things in our newsletter, McLaren, one of the teams appeared
to have won the World Drivers Championship, and it seems
(04:23):
like they had had that unlock for months, but last
week's Qatargram pri truly threw a wrench wink wink f
one into the entire season. Never say die. Max Forstappen
has made tremendous strides after an uncharacteristically slow start and
is now second in the standings. And I think the
(04:44):
coolest thing here stuff is that people kind of love
to hate on Max for Stappin because of how good
he was, and he kind of leaned into his villain role,
and now I feel like people are actually loving Max
for Bax and it's kind of cool seeing him as
thequote unquote underdog, even though I wouldn't go so far
as say underdog, but now he's almost coming back from
(05:06):
that villain arc and saying, okay, is he the hero?
Could he actually win this World Drivers Championship? It's truly shocking.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
There's an Instagram post on just USA about time when
someone commented I didn't think I was ever going to
be cheering for Max Verstapa or something like that. People
are alarms on how they've changed their tune. So we're
going to talk about that today.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
We are going to talk about that today. Before we
get into everything, I do.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Want to call an audible and I want to lean
in on the tune and I want to lean in
on F one.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
We know that there was rumored.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Love affairs between Taylor Swift and Fernando Alonso. We also
know that Wednesday, December third, Spotify Rapped came out, and
on Tuesday, December second, all of the Apple Music rapped
came out. And so I want to know, Steph, what
were your top five artists?
Speaker 3 (05:56):
I love how you mentioned both just so you could
be like and we're not sponsored by either, so I'm
going to punch.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
We have listeners across both. Wait, what was your question?
Top five artists? Please?
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Okay, I'm really shocked that Rosalia didn't make it into
this list because I've been listening to Lux her latest
album on repeat since it came out, and so I
want to speak to the people at Spotify and ask
them how that did make this list. But Taylor Swift
number one? Ward, I'm going in order, going in order, okay,
Lord Addison, Ray hi Am and Chapel Roone.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Oh wow, you talk to us to that Lord a
little bit.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Did she release new music this year?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
She did Yeah album and it was amazing.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
I was under a rock when that happened. That's okay.
Can you send me? Can you send me? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Speaking of under a rock, one of our high school
teachers who taught English didn't know Piece of Me by
Britney Spears. And this was when Ellen and I were
in high school, so it was it was relevant. And
I turned him and I go, what are you living
under a rock?
Speaker 1 (07:02):
And Steph has been smashing the patriarchy. It's grade ten,
you know what. It's good to make them feel humble.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Mm hmmm.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Also you want a piece of me?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
An English teacher not knowing that that's a piece of
literary art.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Thank you, by thank you.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
What were your top five artist?
Speaker 2 (07:18):
My top five was somewhat surprising. And I'm doing this
off the top of my head because we're recording. We
all we always have your phone to record video.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
So she doesn't have a reference.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
This is a good memory test.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Justin Biebers weg swig swig one, swig two, Justin Bieber,
Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Uh, Lily Allen, Oh good album. Banger On album. My
top the top four songs we're all from that album.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
I love Petty.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
I was like, turns out, I'm just a nosy bitch.
Beyonce and monast sense oh you're bringing back the banjo? Well,
you know what, they had a new album as well,
and I saw the two main concerts that I saw
this year in person were Beyonce Mumford, so of course
those were gonna end up on my top five as
(08:13):
I prepared, and I am just a long term Mumfort fan.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
But looking at my top song stuff, it was top four.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Were Lily Allen songs and then Daisy's with Justin Bieber
and Lemonade is one of my all time favorite albums.
I think Lemonade is my favorite album and Bad out
of Hell by meat Loaf is my favorite album. Those
two I love and very different, but both of them
storytelling Bad at a Hell kind of fake storytelling, fictional,
(08:41):
campy meat Loaf. But then Lemonade was obviously Beyonce and
jay Z getting into their cheating situation and Lily Allen
literally putting her ex husband on blast during this album.
There's something about the storytelling of it all and me
being nosy that I love, but I also just found
the vibes to be so right for this album, like
(09:04):
I truly enjoyed all of the lyrics, but also just
the composition of the album too.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
I couldn't agree more because my fourth song was sports car.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
You know, a fantastic, fantastic.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Storytelling, and you know what we're gonna be talking about
sports cars today. The third PWHL season is officially underway,
so we partnered with our friends at FanDuel and sat
down with data analysts and owner of her own company
and also lecture. The resume is truly so incredible. But
(09:40):
we sat down with Megan chik Ya to hear who
she thinks is this season's under the radar player, but
also just basically who she thinks is the best player
as well.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
So here's Megan's pick.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
I don't think under the radar, but I'd say Taylor
Heisei plus eleven FanDuel for MVP still has the on
her side, a young player, very superstar mentality both on
and off the ice, a lot of shot as so
she passes a lot for quality shot attempts and also
can score, so I think that gives a little bit
of an edge over maybe even a Sarah Filier who
(10:14):
has an excellent shot in the rivalry series. Recently we
saw her score an amazing goal and we'll have a
big season, I'm sure for the p WHL.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
But you know, there's there's a.
Speaker 5 (10:23):
Lot of good names to throw around, even like an
Abby Boorreen in Vancouver said overtime game winning goal she
got across ice, passed a really nice finish, high energy,
gets a ton of puck time, a lot of possession time.
You know, can can skate with a puck but also
can score and high praise from a lot of the
scouts that see her often.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
The thing is Taylor Heisi also came out with the
CCM club and it's pretty the collection's pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
I like that.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Yeah, so perhaps she is that girl, you know what
I mean?
Speaker 1 (10:55):
I think that she is that girl.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
I think that when we see her play with Minnesota.
One to Walter Kupp said this point, I should also
say sef being a Team Canada fan when it comes
to hockey, but now it's so hard. It's kind of
like the US women's national team where I know those
players so well, but I also.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Want them to win.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
But when it comes down to Team Canadas team USA.
I'm still cheering for the Canadian team, but Taylor.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Heize on the ice against.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Team Canada makes me so frustrated because she is so
good and I feel like she's such a well rounded
forward too, which you don't always see, and so I
do feel like she is that girl that I don't
necessarily see her as under the radar. I think she's
very much on the radar. But just as the league
is developing, we need to kind of get to know
(11:41):
these next generation names as well.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Ooh boy, did she cause Canada some problems in the
most recent rivalry series games.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
With a capital P.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
But whether you agree with this or disagree with this,
you can put some money on it. You put some
green on your gut feeling and make your pwhl bets
on FanDuel.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Go ahead, download the FanDuel app, visit it online, make your.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
PWHL bets today.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Okay, party people, it's time for you to have a
piece of f one for the you get it call back.
For the first time since twenty ten, three drivers are
in contention for Formula Ones World Drivers Championship ahead of
the final Grand Prix of the season in a Bu Dhabi.
It's been an absolutely thrilling showcase of racing today and
(12:37):
it will all come down to this weekend's finale with
the title fight featuring the McLaren duo of Lando Norris
and Oscar Piastre and the four time defending champion Red
Bulls Max orstap In. I do want to pause here
and say for those of you who are less inclined
with F one, you're joining at the greatest time. But also,
the World Drivers Championship is different than the World's Constructorsampionship.
(13:00):
When we think about the Driver's Championship, that is going
to a solo driver who's collected the most points the
entire season versus the constructors is going to a team
that is made up of two drivers that has one
of the most points combined for the entire season.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
And if you are new no time, like the presidents
of don't feel like you need to wait for next
season because F one is theater. It's I can't think
it's camp. You really need to hop on right now.
So we're going to recap the season so far. We're
going to dig into the lore a first stap In
and we're going to talk about that. Perhaps villain to
(13:36):
hero arc here.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
I think maybe a hero as we're saying, and I'm like,
that might be too much, but definitely like villain to Jester,
villain to likable, liable likable, that's a.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Villain to likable.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
I don't know if there's a hero yet an F
one because I think to your voice stuff it being
theater and camp and whatever. They're all so drama. They're
all so dramatic.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
They are who they are.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
It's literally like watching Real Housewives when you're looking exactly
when you're watching the media, after you're seeing the clips,
you're doing all this stuff. I'm like, these men are
actually so next level and I love them.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
For it, you know what I mean?
Speaker 3 (14:10):
They bring it.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
They bring it every single time.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
So we'll talk about off track stuff, but I think
we also need to talk about on track stuff and
basically recap the entire twenty twenty five F one season
and talk about how we got here. So McLaren has
absolutely dominated I'd say since day one. They won eleven
of the fourteen races that occurred before there was a
summer break. Pastree, who is the younger of the two drivers,
(14:38):
came out of the gates especially strong, winning four of
the first six races of the season. Of those first
fourteen races, so the first half of the season, Pastree
won six, Norris won five. Versapin one two so versapin
is with Red Bull and George Russell of Mercedes one one. Notably,
(14:58):
you might not have heard any Ferrari in there, with
Charles Leclair or with Lewis Hamilton who famously left Mercedes
for Ferrari, and that is because they are having an
absolutely shite year.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
So many names, so many teams, and it really did
look like it was going to be clear domination from
McLaren from start to finish, going off of those numbers
and those names there, and at one point Verstappan was
a whopping one hundred and four points behind then leader
Piastre in the World Driver's Championship standings.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
However, throughout the season, and this is where the drama
and the dynamics kind of come in. Generally, what happens
in F one is that there's a number one driver
and then there's a number two driver, and the teams
essentially create their strategy off of having a number one
driver and a number two driver. I like to liken
it step to a starting goalie and a backup goalie
(15:51):
in hockey, and I think a lot of the times
now in NHL there will kind of be two goalies
that work in tandem together to kind of manage their
load and load management that we've talked We've talked a
lot about in sports lately, but it does really help
to have a clear number one or when things are changing,
like making that decision really quickly and saying why, and
(16:11):
that just did not happen with McLaren. They refuse to
name a number one driver outright, opting instead to make
things as fair as possible between their two drivers. I'd
say in years past, and I think more naturally the
number one driver would go to Lando Norris with him
being slightly more experienced. But it's really hard when you
(16:32):
have someone like Auster Piastre come on to the team
and he's actually winning the same amount of races, if
not more races halfway through the season.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
If there's decisions to be made during the race too,
like this comes into play. So it's not even just
like a you get a gold star and you get
an even bigger goal. Sorry, it quite literally affects the
strategy of the teams having a number one versus a
number two driver and how that will change team orders,
like depending on track.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Yeah, exactly, Like there will be times where it's like
we need the number two person to actually play a
little bit more defense and block somebody else who's behind them.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
We need the.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Number two driver to pit before the number one driver
so that the number one driver could get out there
and ahead. So it really does make a difference, and
I think a level playing field sounds nice. However, in
this case, it really backfired and I think that poor
strategy decision has really let for Stapen back into the
(17:32):
title race.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
Because instead of favoring one of their two drivers, there
have been multiple opportunities where both Pastri and Norris left
points on the table because of the team's decision making.
So that is how that comes into play here.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
And the best and most recent example of this was
that last weekend's Catargram Prix where McLaren made the decision
not to pit either Piastre or Norris during a safety car.
And essentially a safety car comes out where there's an
accident on track, it's really not safe for the drivers
to continue to go at the speeds that they were
going at, so a safety car comes out basically slows
(18:07):
everyone down.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
And what's really.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Difficult with the safety car is that there could be
so much spacing in between these cars or these drivers.
All of a sudden, you're basically feeling like you're back
to the beginning, but you're still driving around the track
at the same time. And so a lot of teams
will decide, Okay, while it's slow and while all of
the cars are so close.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Together, should we pit or should we not pit?
Speaker 2 (18:32):
And this is a very poor decision from McLaren to
not pit because Piastre was first, Norris was third at
the time, and what ended up happening is that Piastree
finished second and Norris finished fourth because the reason that
they decided not to do it is because then one
strategy would have favored one driver over.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
The other, and for staff In one right, yes, and
for Staffin ended up winning the race.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
And so when you look the World Driver's Championships, all
of a sudden, for Staffan goes whoop up to number one,
past three, then goes down to third, and then Norris
is still kind of in the mix up there. So
one decision has literally changed the entire course of the
season and brought it all down to this, brought it
all down to this weekend.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
And then a quick producer's note here is Pastree was
the fastest ground track all weekend long, and he took
poll in sprint qualifying and regular qualifying and won the
sprint race handily. So I'm wondering how this might be
playing out between Norris and Piastree.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Internally, I don't think it's really fair because it's not
really up to the drivers, right Like this to me
comes back to the principles of the team, and I
look at Zach Brown at McLaren and I'm like, Zachie, boy,
what are you doing.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Let's make it principles like a coach exactly. The principal
is manager manager, Yeah, Like what is he doing?
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Why aren't we making these decisions? So now the World
Drivers Championship fights heads into Abu Dhabi and this is
how it stands Lando Norris has four hundred and eight points,
Max Verstappan has three hundred ninety six points, that's twelve
points behind Oscar Piastre has three hundred and ninety two points,
that's sixteen points behind so sorry, I said Max was
(20:21):
coming first. He came first in the race, not first
in the drivers, but he's second in the driver's championship
right now.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
In terms of clinching scenarios, it's you can map all
of it out in terms of who what would exactly
have to happen for so and so to win a race,
win is worth twenty five points, a second place finish
is worth eighteen points, and a third place finish is
worth fifteen points. And then of course there are other
points that are awarded that go on from there, but
we're not going to talk about those. There's not an
after ten, thank you, and it is a numbers game.
(20:53):
But for these particular three drivers, if Norris finishes on
the podium in Abu Dhabi, he would win his first
up title. For for Stappin to win the title, he
must finish on the podium and Norris can't. He cannot
make the podium for for Stapen to win, and then
Piastree needs a lot of help because he must finish
(21:15):
first or second and have Norris not make the podium
as well.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
And I think what's interesting in all of this the
entire season, Steff is like, what is McLaren going to do.
They went essentially the entire season saying okay, you're both
on the A team, you are both our number one drivers.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
And then now it's coming down to Abu Dhabi.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
And the pressure's on and both Piastree and Norris have
a pretty solid chance at potentially winning the World Driver's Championship.
Do they now decide to put on a number one
driver and do they put all of their eggs in
one basket, or do they decide to say, Okay, we've
been doing this the entire season, We're just going to
split and see what happens.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
If I was.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
McLaren, I would be looking at, okay, what is my
best chance for this person to win a World Driver's Championship?
And when we look purely at the chances, I think
you have to think about putting Lando Norris as your
number one driver and making sure that that is the
strategy because he is the most simple way to win.
He finishes on the podium, he wins. It doesn't really
(22:26):
matter what else Max and Piastre you do versus for
those For Pastre, it matters.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
What Norris does.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
I think it's really difficult here stuff because I don't
think that you could ask Norris to stay off the
podium so that Piastre could win, Like they have to
ask Norris to do that.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
It's really hard, a.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Lot of tough decisions, a lot of tough conversations I'm
sure being had in the back end, and I think
that leads us to whether or not we want to
call it a villain to a hero arc. But we're
going to talk about mac forsapn Now.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Yeah, all of a sudden, so all this shit's going
down with McLaren and I think people are like, wait,
am I cheering for Max Verstappin as a result, because
he's kind of clawed his way back into this. He
has always been a polarizing figure. I'd say an F
one he is a bit of a nefo baby in
the F one world, as most of them are. Honestly,
I think that we could say, but he's passionate, he's aggressive, he,
(23:21):
to quote Taylor Swift, is fearless. He pushes the limits
of both the track and the car. And I don't know,
he kind of like he's he's uh, maybe arrogant.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
I wouldn't.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
I think I'd go beyond confident and say arrogant with
Max Verstappin. There's a reason he's a four time champion
and one of the greatest drivers of all time, but
he just received a lot of criticism and flack because
of that.
Speaker 3 (23:46):
Yeah, if you watch Drive to Survive, you probably had
you had feelings about him. He's not someone you don't
have feelings about.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
For sure, and I think a lot of it was
solidified in twenty twenty one in Abu Dhabi. Also came
down to the final race in twenty twenty one, where
questionable from F one's governing body, the FIA restarted a
race that should not have been restarted under the rule book.
This was so frustrating and what happened was one of
the most controversial endings to a race that has literally
(24:13):
ever happened. Wherever Stappin past seven time champion Lewis Hamilton
on the last lap of the race to win the
World Drivers' Championship, Versus if Lewis would have won that
Grand Prix, Lewis would have won his eighth World drivers Championship.
The call obviously was not Verstappen's fault, but it was
the manner at which he won, and I think the
(24:35):
manner at which he conducted himself after that race and
was like, of course this is the right decision. Of
course I won. I'm the better driver. Of course we won.
This is the better car, when a lot of people
watching from home was like, that's simply not what happened.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
That was in twenty twenty one, and then he dominated
in twenty twenty two, twenty twenty three, and twenty twenty four,
winning forty three races over three seasons, including a mind
boggling nineteen races in twenty two starts in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
So he's good.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
He's good, and a lot of people love to hate
people who are good. I mean, I think, look at
Lebron James. I think that he is a perfect example
of for so long, people like ah finding so many
ways to despise the way that Lebron James played basketball.
And I think only now that he's in his forties,
everyone's gotten over it. They're like, you know what, I
(25:27):
actually love Lebron go totally like same idea for Tom Brady.
People are like, f this guy, blah blah blah blah blah.
And I think people actually still feel that way about
Tom Brady. I think people have come around to Lebron James.
But that's just what happened in sports Serena Williams, you're good,
You're hated, and that happens all the time. Hm.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
So people are now jumping onto the first step in
Ben Wigan and his unlikely run this season has really
cemented him as one of the best ever drive and
at some point people got to go, Okay, you know
what I mean.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
Yeah, he yeah, he is funny. I think he's funny too.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
I think in the past where I was like, oh
my god, he's so arrogant and he's so annoying, I
think that he's grown up before our eyes. He's older now,
he's a dad. Now he is he's a dad.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
That helps. He's a dad now.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
And I think before when I was like, this is arrogant,
this is too much, now I kind of find it
just like pure entertainment. And I really do think that
he's just himself and he's earned.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
That confidence or that arrogance when you're.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
That dominant at your sport for that long. One of
the best things that happened I think over the last
week on the internet is that McLaren's team principal, who
we mentioned already. Zach Brown called for Stappen a horror
movie villain, and Verstappen responded by saying, quote, he can
call me chucky and he was smiling, and he was smiling,
and that's so fun and it's just like I love
(26:48):
these little I don't know comebacks from him. And also
potentially now a comeback on the track.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
Is it potentially, if it does happen, if he does win,
is it the greatest.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
Comeback and one history? No, No, I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
I think that there's I think that there's been like
so many great comebacks before I was actually even into
f one, stuff like back in our high school days.
I think Sebastian Bettle in twenty twenty twelve is twenty
twenty twelve. What did I just say in twenty twelve
was something that a lot of people kind of lead
into I think two with this one. Stuff like McLaren
(27:24):
has made a lot of mistakes in this with respect
to their strategy. They've had a couple of races where
I even think like one or both of the cars
weren't able to race. I haven't been able to like
watch as much as I wanted to this year, and
so I think it's not that this is Max's title
to win. It's McLaren's title to lose. And so I
(27:44):
think as a result, that's probably making him, as well
as other people, feel some type of a way unless
he has an incredible race, finishes.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
On top of the podium.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
Somehow Yuki Sonoda of Red Bull manages to keep maybe
both mclays off the podium, and he does it. That's
to me like, okay, that is class Max or staff,
and otherwise I say, okay, this is McLaren's fault.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
Most adults in my life are awake at eight am
on a Sunday, So I feel like tune in, tune in,
Ma's one of you. If you're one of those people,
do it.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
Do it.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
It's time for our personal training, sesshon. This is the
segment of the podcast where we would love to answer
any of your questions about the sports world or amplify
a hot take that you have. We really want to
get you involved in the podcast, and today we are hosting,
or we are receiving and answering a question from Stacy
and Denver. Thank you so much for reaching out so
earlier this week. The WNBA's proposal for the CBA was leaked,
(28:53):
as per sources, to multiple news outlets, and so Stacey
wants to know what is going on with this particular propose.
Do we like it, do we not like it? And
what is happening with the revenue sharing. I'm a little
bit confused. Can you guys break it down for us?
Speaker 1 (29:06):
Thank you, Stacey.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
We would love to do nothing more since we chatted
on Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, we said, okay, we're not
going to hear anything basically until January ninth. That's when
the extension has gone to They said, you guys are wrong,
We're going to We're going to share something today and
that's essentially what happened. And so there's it's a little
bit confusing the way that this has been broken down,
(29:29):
and so I think that we want to break this
down in terms of base salary, projected salary based off
of the revenue share as kind of two separate things.
So what we are seeing and how the WNBA is
proposing it is that there is seven digit salaries in
the latest proposal. However, when we look at those salaries,
(29:53):
those salaries are made up of two things, their base
and then their bonus. If we want to break it
down in the same way like the corporate world would
do it. So essentially they're saying, Okay, the base salary
on average would be around five hundred thousand dollars. However,
based off of revenue sharing opportunities for a select amount
(30:17):
of or a select portion of the revenue being at
around fifty percent, which is equal to what the NBA has,
that MAC salary can actually increase to one point two
million dollars. So that's the projected MAC salary when you consider, okay,
they have their base five hundred k, and if the
league does well on a revenue side of things, then
(30:38):
they get their top up up to one point two million.
So essentially the WNBA is trying to set this up,
I'd say step very similar to the classic corporate world
of here's your base, here's your projection. I think the
thing that's different here, though, is that generally, when you're
looking at bonuses like the NBA has or NFL has,
(31:01):
or actually what a lot of corporations have, is that
it is completely split out between the salary as well
as the bonus. They're kind of lumping them all in
together here, so that it's essentially saying the max total
salary is one point two million and you can't go
above that. And they're also saying there's specific there's specific
(31:23):
revenue channels or verticals that you could earn that bonus from.
It's not all revenue. And so that's where it's getting
a little bit confusing, is that revenue sharing is a
part of this, but they've kind of proposed it or
projected it through a base salary kind.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Of conversation, so they're not meeting what the players have
asked for the revenue sharing model. It's not the same
one that the players are trying to negotiate for. And
in this the salary cap would increase from one point
five million to five million, So that means technically, like
not all people obviously can be making this one.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
And I think too that salp like at least my
understanding from reading everything is that that salary cap like
is based off of the base as opposed to the
like revenue on top of it. Right like that, that's
my understanding is that the five million can still go
across people with the five hundred K. I could be
totally misunderstanding it, to be honest. The leaked numbers and
(32:20):
the leaks reporting was a little bit confusing on that part,
as like, is this max total salary including the salary
cap increase because that's including the revenue sharing and bonus,
or is it this like next year's average salary is
like five hundred k? Does that include also the revenue sharing?
So I think that's where it's a little bit wishy.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
Washy, which would make sense as to why the salary
cap was.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
Exactly so it makes sense that there is an increase
to five million, the still in closer to what players
have been asking for, but doesn't like fully address that
equal split that the NBA has. I think also to
stuff there's like, at least from the athletics reporting, there
was some stuff that was basically saying, Okay, if we're
thinking about maxing out salaries, that's all well and good
(33:09):
for this upcoming year of the WNBA if that's predicting
fifty percent, But if you anticipate the league is going
to continue to grow its top line revenue, then does
that actually allow the players to capture the upside that
they want to if there's a max salary on it?
Speaker 1 (33:26):
No?
Speaker 2 (33:26):
Right, And I think that's what the players are saying
here is that, like, we want to be able to
drive some of that upside so that we can make
more of that money and so that there isn't a
limit on how much we're making.
Speaker 3 (33:39):
And I think some of the reporting too was saying
this is an increase, but at what costs because in
this recent proposal, the WNBA is also clawing back some
other benefits. So this proposal eliminates team provided housing and
moves up the potential for the season to start in
mid March. And that housing one is tricky because for
players that are getting bounced around and they're in period
(34:01):
like certain locations for a short period of time, or
they aren't making as much as everyone else on the team,
that guaranteed either housing from their team or a stipend
for that varies depending on what market they're in. So
obviously in New York will get more money than other markets.
Has been a good guarantee for folks who aren't one of.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
The key components, I don't take that.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
The calendar shift is also really hard, So the WNBA
is proposing training camps start in mid March, which I
think cause a myriad of issues, the first being March madness.
So a lot of the league's rookies come from the
nc DOUBLEA. The National Championship is generally at the beginning
of April, and then the draft is until mid April.
(34:47):
So how could training camps start in mid March If
that's the way the NCAA works, The NCAA is not
going to change things for the WNBA.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
Let's make that super clear here.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
I think the other thing too, is we've talked about
on rivals before on this podcast.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
We've mentioned Project B before. There's a lot of other.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Leagues that are going on in the off season of
the WNBA, and a lot of the new rules with
the WNBA through the last CBA was like you have
to leave your non WNBA league or team in order
to come back and meet those training camp requirements. Training
camps in twenty twenty five for the w started April
(35:25):
twenty seventh, so people could play for Unrivaled. If twenty
twenty six training camps start stuff in mid March, that's
going to be really hard for a lot of players
to make. We know Unrivaled Championship is at the beginning
of March. It was March sixth last year, and these
players do need a break. Do you follow sports ball
stuff on tektok or Instagram. No, but I'm like they
(35:49):
do a really great job of basically data visualization and
data breakdown on different things that are happening in sports.
And I stumbled across one the other day Surprise Surprise
about Achilles injuries and Achilles tears and why there's an
increase in basketball right now.
Speaker 1 (36:04):
It's free and.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
A lot of what doctors are thinking right now, especially
for WNBA and NBA players is load management. And it's
because their seasons are so much longer, they're big bodies
in a sport like basketball. It's also coming off of
one particular move that a lot of players are working
(36:26):
on that really like puts pressure on their Achilles tendon
and stretches it out a lot more.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
And so to me, this makes me just.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
Like really nervous period. I guess about like load management
for all of these athletes. And at the same time,
like you're saying, Okay, we're gonna pay you more, but
that means that you have to play a lot more too,
And I don't think that that's what exactly what the
WNBA players wanted, like playing a bit more for sure,
(36:57):
But to this extent, I'm not sure if that warrants
exactly everything without that revenue share being higher.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Wm WNBPA president Neko gumen Kay's response to this note
proposal to the Athletic was quote, I don't feel like
there's any cultivation of a culture of trust. We don't
feel valued in these talks as they stand today. I
feel like we've been heard but not listened to. And
I'm hoping that that changes in this forty day extension
(37:25):
because what we want to do is get a good deal.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
Denka the voice of the people also too, I do
want to say, I am like a little bit confused
stuff about this MACS.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
Salary and the revenue sharing and all that sort of stuff.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
I think that things because this was a leak, is
getting lost in the sauce between like the Athletic Sports
Business Journal on this projected salary inclusive of the revenue
bonus and is it a specific revenue sharing or is
this based off of a base salary and then the
revenue on top of that. So if Anny Justter's want
(38:00):
to pipe in and like share that information with us,
that would be great, because I am we're getting we're
getting live feedback from our producers right now.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
And I'm wondering what's happening.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
I would say our understanding has largely been informed by
how we've interpreted the athletics reporting on this. But yeah,
as Ellen said, there are slightly different things being released
via different sources on different news sites, and the players
are questioning the math that's happening that the WNBA are proposing.
So I think the key to this is confusion. And
(38:35):
I hope that we delivered at least a little bit
more clarity for you, Stace.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
Yeah, we hope, so, Stacey, we might have also just
mucked it up. So just ers help us. If you
