In the dramatic chapter from the Adventures of Charlie turned.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
Charlie Chan humbly bid you good evening and extends warm welcome.
It is written, do not judge men thy smile, do
not judge seas by come. In both cases, deadly sharks
may lurk just underneath surface. Tonight we need two different
(02:34):
kinds of sharks who come out of sea. Listen, please
thank you.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Night's adventure, the curious ride of the sea Witch. The
(03:11):
grim prison walls loom forbiddingly through the fog, settling down
on Honolulu in their tars, their guns at the ready.
Uniform guards are tents and alert, but the very air seems.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Charged with menace. Then suddenly the siren wails in the night.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Giant searchlights sneak out, attempting to penetrate the cotton wool gloom,
and in the darkness voices the herd.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
Let they go.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Every order.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
A daring prison break. Carefully and painstaking they planned.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
After the convicts were herded back into their cells and
a check up was made, two men were missing, Big
Blue greathon and Porky Bait Heat, serving a NFE sentence
for murder.
Speaker 6 (04:09):
Asient please beyond lookout to escape convicts.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Description first man Big Blue Gleason.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
White, forty years old, height six feet two and a
half inches, weight two hundred and thirty eight pounds, lurid complexion,
sandy hair, gray eyes, has scarn from old knife wound
on back of right hand. Second man forty baits white,
thirty seven years old, height five eet seven inches, weight
(04:36):
one hundred and eighty two pounds, shallow complexion, dark hair,
brown eyes, broken nose.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
They escape five votes.
Speaker 7 (04:45):
Both men are.
Speaker 6 (04:45):
Armed beyond lookout for these men, but exercise great caution.
Speaker 7 (04:50):
Both are dangerous.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
What happens now, Lou?
Speaker 7 (05:21):
We keep going?
Speaker 4 (05:23):
And then what what kind of a question is that?
Speaker 8 (05:26):
And then what what am I a fortune teller? Row?
Until something happens, we come across a boat that's big
enough to take us away from these rotten islands, and if.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
It's some day aboard that's try to stop it.
Speaker 8 (05:39):
I gotta give you the answer to let one out.
All I can say is I pick the wrong candicate
to break out with.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
I'm glorry, Lou, I know the answer, all right. I'm
glad you do.
Speaker 8 (05:50):
Had me worried talking out here in this tubba't exactly
the place to find. You picked the dud to break
out with.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
I'm killing you, Lou.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
I know this guy. Okay, it's just one thing, blood
and you know we can pick up a boat.
Speaker 8 (06:06):
We don't.
Speaker 6 (06:08):
We just got to take a gamble, another long odd
We've taken it.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
You think I don't figure it that way.
Speaker 8 (06:15):
We've wanted to just screen with rich cacers steaming up
and down in there luxury yachts.
Speaker 6 (06:21):
Okay, I'll take your word for it.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
Okay, shut up and keep rowing the bog holes.
Speaker 8 (06:29):
We ain't got to sing in the world to worry about.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Bog is practically unknown in the Hawaian Islands, but unaccountably
one has swept in from the sea, shrouding the coastline
so heavily that all navigation is at a standstill, and
the great White yacht Sea Witch is forced to drop
anchor in a convenient cove. The yachts owner the enormously
both the Missus Hannah Bromfield, seems to regard this as
(07:00):
a personal affront, and as a results, she is being
more than usually unpleasant to.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Her daughter Bunny as they sit together in the main cabin.
Speaker 9 (07:08):
Bernice, my dear, yes, mother, I've been going quite a
bit of thinking since we started our little voyage. Yes, dear,
and well, to be completely truthful, I am not entirely happy.
Speaker 10 (07:17):
Oh what's wrong, dear?
Speaker 7 (07:20):
Well?
Speaker 9 (07:20):
This is actually the first opportunity I've had to really
know your la fiance. And frankly, Bernice, I do not
find myself weakly and pressed.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Do you mean you don't like that?
Speaker 9 (07:31):
I mean exactly that, But I thought, Oh, I grant
you that she's pleasant enough and good looking in a
weak sort of way. Intelligent too. I suppose what is
a husband for you, for the daughter of Hannah Bromfield. No,
very definitely not.
Speaker 11 (07:45):
And what's so very special about me?
Speaker 9 (07:47):
Are you failing to take into consideration the sector? Some
day you will control a very large fortune.
Speaker 11 (07:52):
But suppose I told you that.
Speaker 9 (07:53):
I'd rather have but now than a fatune. Then are
you telling me that sell me? Are you defying your mother?
Speaker 4 (08:02):
No?
Speaker 12 (08:02):
That's good.
Speaker 9 (08:03):
Then I suggest we said to Boto, No, settle the
matter once and for all, and then when this deathl
fall lift, we can put back at the porter. Let
me go out of your life forever. Oh no, mother,
not that way, And why not prayer?
Speaker 10 (08:15):
Oh, I'll do what you want me to. I always
have done what you wanted me to.
Speaker 9 (08:19):
Haven't.
Speaker 6 (08:19):
I but let me.
Speaker 10 (08:21):
Tell barbar but it's all over. Maybe maybe that way.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
He's so badly hurt, you'll do it at once.
Speaker 10 (08:31):
Yes, yes, I'll go and find him that.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
A few moments later, a miserably unhappy Bunny is seated
on the after deck telling her erstwhile fiance Barton Henry.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
Then it's all over.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
He is a studious looking young man, given an air
of distinction by a stick hung and glasses and a
trim blacknesstache.
Speaker 10 (09:00):
And so you will see, Danny, there just isn't anything
we can do about it.
Speaker 13 (09:05):
You mean you're going to take this outrage line down.
You're going to let that woman well, I mean you're
you're going to let your mother wreck your life and
mine without lifting a finger to soccer.
Speaker 10 (09:17):
But you just don't know mother that.
Speaker 11 (09:20):
You don't know how John would she at or house,
how completely relates she's capable of being.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
You don't love me very much, do your Bunny? Oh,
but you're the dearest thing in all the world to me.
It's easy enough to say. I suppose I asked you
to prove it.
Speaker 10 (09:36):
You know there's nothing I wouldn't do for you.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
I said to stand up to your mother.
Speaker 11 (09:39):
But Danny, how can I you haven't even got a job.
Speaker 10 (09:44):
Well, I have no money except what mother gives me.
Speaker 11 (09:47):
If we went off and got married without a consentant,
we be poor.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
God don't you think I can make a living for
my wife?
Speaker 10 (09:55):
Oh good, I've never been poor. I wouldn't know how
to be.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
And I suppose we're finished.
Speaker 11 (10:03):
If you were only somewhere else, if you were only
something we could throw you.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
So sorry to have alarmed. I am inspected chain of
Honolulu police. And this is my number one son, lee
chan highway people.
Speaker 10 (10:18):
But what are you doing here?
Speaker 9 (10:20):
I we didn't even hear you come aboard?
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Bug at sea blankets ears as well as eyes, so
that even great help of men like self seems to
walk on a pussycats seat. It was the road here
from police boats in totally inadequate dinghy by number one son.
You should have seen Papola way over. He was just
as comfortable as he would have been the merry go
around with sand paper seat. This is no time for levity,
(10:45):
my son. You are miss Bromfield pleased?
Speaker 10 (10:49):
Yes, yes I am.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
But how did you remember a cruise? So inform me
when he directed me here u and youth, this is.
Speaker 10 (10:59):
Darknhead instead, he's my fiancee.
Speaker 9 (11:03):
The least then you have not yet informed Barton as
my decision.
Speaker 10 (11:08):
Please please, we have.
Speaker 9 (11:10):
Visiting, so I perceived.
Speaker 5 (11:12):
Who are you?
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Please?
Speaker 9 (11:14):
This is please inspect a chair mother and his son
Lee Inspector.
Speaker 10 (11:18):
This is my mother, Missus Hannah Bromfield Hire.
Speaker 7 (11:21):
Missus Bromfield h.
Speaker 9 (11:24):
Quite a skippy guy.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Here quiet least chance, this is indeed great privilege, Missus
brompteind and what are we.
Speaker 9 (11:32):
Indebted for the honor of this residence?
Speaker 4 (11:34):
Ritter am in pursuit of escape convicts, Missus Brompteed, did you.
Speaker 9 (11:39):
Expect to find your escape convicts here of all the sea?
Which and this is nearly your routine check out, Missus Bromfield.
We police had to do it all the time.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
Police vote forced to anchor because of impenetrable barks. Yes.
We were then observed your life and was rowed over
in small boats which topped like nervous cork. To inquire
if you had seen anything up two men in small
Of course we haven't, so I was informed by members
of your crew. However, have advised crew to keep sharp lookout,
(12:08):
Missus Bromfield and wish to suggest that you yourself do likewise.
These men extremely dangerous, les say they are. They're only
big blue policemen porky baits.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
That's all two of the toughest characters that ever broke
out of jails.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
Nothing the pairs of the papers called the hammer Kullers. Yes,
only now they got guns. Does not make everything just ducky.
And now, having performed duty, must return to police vote
and prepare to resume chase when Fog lives. Before taking departure,
should like to warn all of you again leeve be
(12:44):
extremely careful.
Speaker 9 (12:55):
How would you like to have a boat like a
Brumfield chump?
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Hat I reckon? I wouldn't hard to say, would it.
It has been written, my son, that truly happy poor
man riding upon humble donkey enjoys journeys far more than
discontented a rich man mounted upon blooded speed.
Speaker 9 (13:15):
I took a look into the main cabin while you
were talking to missus Buncefield, and what are you know?
Speaker 4 (13:19):
Pop the paper cabinet finished in tulip wood, my son, saying.
Speaker 12 (13:25):
Both rare and costly like that, maybe she hadn't done
the match of face, because every time took it at
Barton Henry.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
Feller, she turned purple too, also.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Seemed to detest definite attention existing between missus Bronsfield and
her daughter.
Speaker 9 (13:40):
You can say that again, Pop, that gil was ground
tighter than an eighth day clock.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
Maybe she and her is Disney chance?
Speaker 7 (13:48):
What's that?
Speaker 4 (13:49):
A pop sone with? Believe I hear the sound of allez.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Our story will continue in just a few moments. You're announcer. Enough.
Back to the incomparable Charlie Chan.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Rowing back to a police launch after warning occupants of
a luxury off the sea witch about two escape convicts.
Charlie Chan, here's the steady swish of all cutting through
the fark and shadded waters.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Some little distance from the chant.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
Hey, lo uh huh. I'm feeling kind of wounded, So.
Speaker 8 (14:48):
Maybe you'd like to take it a little leasyer, you would.
Speaker 13 (14:54):
Like?
Speaker 8 (14:54):
Why do I care what you feel like? You know
that if we don grab a boat for a get
away before this lips back behind bars in no time
their planes hunting.
Speaker 4 (15:04):
As okay, there's both right up, A big man stop rowing.
Speaker 8 (15:11):
Drifted along quietly.
Speaker 4 (15:16):
Yeah, I see, yes, Well she's a big one on.
You could certainly go places in the tub right there.
Get your gun ready, Poky, because that's just what we're
gonna do. We're gonna go places.
Speaker 9 (15:45):
I feel we've given this metal. All of this question
is metas botton. My mind is made up and nothing
can make me change it.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Even if I pointed out the absolute unfairness of your
whole attitude, that wouldn't make the slightest difference.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
What is Missus Brompire.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
You constituted just of judge jury prosecuting Italy in the
court of last appeal. Do you think that's being particularly fair?
Missus Brumfield, Just because I happen to know that that's
my own daughter and that.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
High sounding phrase has been used by every selfish dominating
mother is the beginning of time.
Speaker 9 (16:12):
You hear that, you hear hard malign hi, your own mother,
her fish dominating answer.
Speaker 7 (16:20):
I can't stand anymore.
Speaker 9 (16:21):
I imagine you'd wish to say something on my behalf
to defend me against his wishous attack.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
You don't need any defending, Missus Bromfield. You wear an
armor plating of television difference which nothing can stop it.
Speaker 9 (16:32):
Both of you you don't do any how.
Speaker 11 (16:35):
Yeah, so I've broken my engagement. Your bath didn't I,
and I told him so too. What do you try
to do?
Speaker 10 (16:42):
Both of you drive me crazy?
Speaker 9 (16:44):
My dear, Anything I'd ever done is your own good,
my own good.
Speaker 11 (16:49):
I've never heard sometimes a child you can tell about
half house existence.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
I've had to live.
Speaker 11 (16:56):
Every time I've ever tried to break away succeeded in
spoiling what I wanted to do. I reminded me, fight, beautify,
and that's for you. I thought you had a bit
more determination about this. I want to hear any more
about it. If this keeps another moment, I won't be
responsible for what happens.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Do you hear I won't be responsible.
Speaker 9 (17:19):
I imagine, mister Henry, that you're highly gratified with what
you've accomplished tonight. Aren't you coming between parent and child,
disrupting a beautiful relationship?
Speaker 4 (17:28):
Setting my own?
Speaker 2 (17:29):
I feel just about the same way Bunny does, Missus Brumfield.
I just don't want to hear any more about it.
Speaker 9 (17:34):
You will hear much about it.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
I want to borrow another phrase from Bunny, I won't
be responsible for what happens.
Speaker 4 (17:39):
Good Night, Missus Brumfield.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Of all, let's alone in the main cabin.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Hannah Bromfield stares baithfully after Barton Henry as he makes
his way forward to his quarters. Then she crossed to
a bookcase. So that's the volume, seeks itself and begins
to read. She's nervous, distraught. She keeps glancing about apprehensively,
starting in every sound. She lights a cigarette. As she
(18:17):
does so, a porthole on the starboard side opens silently abruptly.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
She rises crushes out the cigarette.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Now she does, Hannah brown Field crumples to the floor,
where she lies sprawled grotesquely.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
On the rich carpet. Don't let me get away, gets
your mother darning? She's dead, dunning.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
No, don't touch her, dumb.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
Just leave everything as it is. I'll roll over to
the police wants and.
Speaker 7 (18:48):
Give them back the chap will not.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
Be necessary to do so. Mister Baton Henry, I'm already
pleasant and have with me unscrupulous evil doers captured with
most welcome. Assistant of Stalwart remembers that's.
Speaker 10 (19:02):
What has stay speak of chance.
Speaker 11 (19:05):
My mother is dead.
Speaker 9 (19:07):
Gosh, I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
Leave that step sincere condolence of this humble person. Miss
Bromfield deeply grieved that frog caused us to come too
late to prevent mister lou Gleeson and mister Poky Bates
from adding another letter to their unsavory record.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Eh, hey, hey, wait a minute, Oh yes you did.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
How do you know that, please, mister Henry, because I
saw them. Looks like that sows ups and pop with
a peer, and mister lou Gleeson and mister Porky Bates
have rashly exchanged life imprisonment for death sentence.
Speaker 8 (19:41):
You heard what Porky said, Chan, we didn't kill us.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
You are in the same unfortunate position. I think as
leopard in old Chinese story who spent many weary days
attempting to convince these listeners he had no thoughts.
Speaker 6 (19:55):
I don't say we wouldn't have Chan, we shot anyone
who got in their way.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
Again, we didn't do it, and I'm telling you again
inspected that they did.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
I saw it with my own eyes.
Speaker 9 (20:04):
Well, this doesn't see the beginnings anywhere.
Speaker 4 (20:06):
Pop. What I'm like to suggest please wished to examine
body of deceased missus Bromfield.
Speaker 10 (20:15):
Wow, she was.
Speaker 9 (20:17):
She was shot through the throat.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
A path Billett entered front of throat and emerged from
back of neck. That's probably instantaneous. Now, mister Henry, kindly
tell a story of tragedy exactly as it occurred. Missus
Bromfield and Bunny and I have been talking, Inspectors.
Speaker 9 (20:38):
We've been quarreling.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
Bath Barren had begun earlier this evening, I think, just
prior to my first visit to Sea Witch. Because of quarrel. Please,
Bunny and I had announced her engagement two weeks ago Dave.
For some reason, Missus Bromfield decided that she didn't want
me for a son in law, and that was that.
Speaker 10 (20:55):
I tried to to make matter change of mind, Inspectors,
but she was Edmund and so well.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
I I accepted it, Inspector Chen. It just wasn't anything
else I could do. It has been said that when
jig is up, there is no need to tiere feet
with additional dancing continue please. After you left, it started
all over again. I did not dance, but I might
as well have been talking to a stone wall.
Speaker 10 (21:20):
And then I got a little hystairical. I told them
both to stop before I went crazy, and then I
went far.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
To my cabin, leaving Missus Bromfield and mister Barton. Henry
is still arguing only for a moment, Inspector, I well,
I said a couple of pretty rotten things after that.
Then I went to my cabin that you did not
remain there, no inspector. After I cooled off a bit,
I felt a little ashamed. After all, Missus Bromfield is
there was the mother of the girl I loved. So
(21:51):
I came back here to apologize, at which time killing
took place. Missus Bromfield had been reading and smoking. She
got up without the cigarette just then that portal opened.
I started to yell, but before I could make a sound,
there was a.
Speaker 3 (22:04):
Shot, and she fell dead.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
And I did yell, and all the rest you'll know.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
All but one most important point, mister Henry, have two
prisoners here, but have no way of determining which one
fired shot. I can tell you that too. It was greasing.
Why you rat you rotten? Raf, I didn't have these
cups on. Are absolutely certain about identifying Gleason, mister Henry.
You'd better be sure. It's got a.
Speaker 9 (22:28):
Stick and a quarter along.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
I can make it stick, all right. I saw the
scar on his hand as he held a gun. I
imagine that clinches. It doesn't dis inspect her. It should, indeed,
the clinches, mister Henry, there remains but one slight detail
to be attended to looking.
Speaker 12 (22:48):
At the tule of wood paneling apop examining the same
with that most interestingly chance, And having done so, I
am now prepared to depart with President.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
I'll be glad to see them go.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
Do not think you will be so glad, mister Barton Henry,
because when they go, you'll go.
Speaker 10 (23:08):
Tooth has to appear against.
Speaker 12 (23:11):
These minute one.
Speaker 4 (23:12):
No, Miss Bromfield, am arresting mister Button Henry for murder
of missus Tanner Bromfield. Oh no, you're not watching.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
Nice quite liston.
Speaker 7 (23:23):
We've got him.
Speaker 4 (23:23):
Puffs excellent, sag and Andrews removed. Prisoners please, we'll join
you shortly.
Speaker 11 (23:30):
All right, fellows, come on, won't you tell me what
is inspector?
Speaker 10 (23:40):
Just as the rale walking through some sort of a bad.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
Dream, we'd like to spare you unhappy details. Miss Bromfield,
I'm all right now and I want to hear.
Speaker 10 (23:52):
How did you know that that was the one who.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
That bart was the guilty one? First suspected it when
he spoke of seeing Scar on the back of mister
low Gleason's hand as he held gun. Remembered, it was
brought out at murder trial that mister Gleeson left handed. Therefore,
it would have been impossible for mister button Henry from
(24:16):
where he stood to see back of mister Gleason's left hand.
Speaker 12 (24:20):
Well, that doesn't top everything.
Speaker 4 (24:22):
Also, forgive me please, bullet which killed Missus Bromfield pierced
through throat. If it had been side from porthole on
that side, it would have embedded itself and would work
on opposite side, but it wasn't there. Carefully, examination failed
to disclose any traits of saying.
Speaker 12 (24:42):
So what really happened is that Henry came back here
with a gun and took a shot of Missus Bromfield
from up far.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
There, and bullet, after completing deadly missions, passed through open
companionway which is directly behind her.
Speaker 11 (24:55):
Well, why couldn't I have worked that one out?
Speaker 4 (24:59):
Is anything further which you wish me to tell you,
miss Brownfield? Perhaps you can tell me.
Speaker 10 (25:07):
How to face the future.
Speaker 12 (25:08):
The chance of my mother?
Speaker 10 (25:11):
Then I loved those in one night.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
And now, while grief is new and fresh, any words
of this inferior person of small avail? And yet it
has been written, But from our sorrows, it is possible
to build stairway upon which each brighter tomorrow may ascend.
(25:39):
Comely chance, this case is ended if before saying good night,
(26:13):
Charlie Chan would like to leave you few words of
ancient philosopher. Do not judge men by words alone. Sometimes
smallest birds sing with loudest voice good night, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
Be sure to join us next week at the same
time for the Adventures of Charlie Chan, based on the
character created by Older Biggers. This is a Grace Gibson
radio production produced by Wes Johnson.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
Welcome Back Soapy's story kind of like some of the
less enjoyable Mister and Missus Norse stories where our detective
is just kind of thrown into this situation. I think
my favorite parton somewhat unique to this was when Chan
was responding to the question at the end, and I
(27:20):
appreciated him acknowledging that nothing he said was going to
be all that helpful, but trying to say what little
he could, because too many paypall when facing a tragic situation,
will offer their opinion whether it's helpful or not, and
without being asked. So good Anya, Inspector Chan, all right, well,
(27:41):
now it is time to thank our Patreon supporter of
the day, and I want to thank Jeffrey, Patreon supporter

Speaker 5 (28:26):
Where just tell me one thing, Miss October. I want
you to tell me the truth. I don't want you
to spare me.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
I have to know.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
Me and I life together, Kenneth and nuts much of one.
I made myself suffer with Kenneth. I thought that way
we could be closer. Say, Dad, you got to tell
me was that pain? No?
Speaker 3 (28:48):
I don't think so.
Speaker 5 (28:49):
Okay, so they would be I've read about it. You're see,
in most cases they think.
Speaker 4 (28:54):
Well, understand what you're talking about.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
Death is my husband.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
That's right, Sta, you said, I said I was the police.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
You told me Kenneth was dead.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
I didn't hear what else I am Apartment on was
fifty sixty dead, Kenneth, no more John.
Speaker 5 (29:16):
They didn't do it.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
Finally, you expected Kenneth today.
Speaker 12 (29:20):
I wanted to be there.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
I made him a promise that I would be near him,
and the doctor told me he didn't have a chance.
I told Kenneth when the time came, I'd be with him,
the husband dying.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
