You tell me, let's find a policeman quickly.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
There.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
I'm sorry, Oh mister, please help me.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
I gotta get to a priest.
Speaker 5 (01:53):
And before we do anything about I'm moving to the
doorway on this ring. Come on, come on, come on,
what happened?
Speaker 6 (02:01):
Fight with a husband? It's the man.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
He's gonna kill me?
Speaker 6 (02:06):
What man? Where?
Speaker 7 (02:07):
Man?
Speaker 3 (02:07):
He was wearing a great hat.
Speaker 6 (02:09):
He was right behind me. You're wrong, baby, There's nobody
behind you. Take a look.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
When I saw him, I tainment you were running towards
me and nearly knocked me over.
Speaker 6 (02:15):
You may take my word for the little lady. There
was no one behind you, but I know he would.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
You know, this man in the gray hat? No, then,
why would he chase you on a rainy night?
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Because I saw him commit murder.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
This is Steve Granger, private detective, with a story about
a rainy night which was the setting for violent death,
and which just incidentally almost had me labeled by my
friends in the police department as nuts. Just a moment,
I'll take you back to one of my most interesting cases.
(02:56):
I took a good look at the young woman who
bumped into me in the rain and found a blow
youngster in her early twenties, dressed in nothing but a
drenched summer dress which clung to her skin like.
Speaker 6 (03:05):
A label to a perfume bottle. Mister, Please, why did
you see this man in the gray hat commit murder
from my apartment? No? What's your name? Please?
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Please look back again. I'm sure he's following that.
Speaker 6 (03:16):
There's no one else around. Come on, let me take
you home.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
But I'm frightened.
Speaker 7 (03:23):
I can't go back there.
Speaker 6 (03:24):
Look, baby, I'm Steve Granger, a private attective. We'll see
that you're safe. Then he can tell me the whole story.
If it holds together, I'll call in the law. Now
is that a deal?
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (03:34):
Okay, Well, let's hurry, you're soaking wet. I went ahead
of the girl and checked her apartment was empty. Then,
while she changed into some dry clothes.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
I looked it over. There's typical of one hundreds of
New York apartments.
Speaker 5 (03:51):
One room doubling for living and sleeping, a window that
looked out over a fire escape, and three lines of
dingy laundry.
Speaker 6 (03:57):
The window opposite was dark.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Well I feel better, Almster grangee.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
They look a little bit better too. Wow. Suppose you
tell me how you happened to witness a murder just.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
A little while ago. You see, when I've got nothing
to do at night, I sit by the window and
look out over.
Speaker 6 (04:16):
The cart, look into the tenant's windows.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Oh, it's a harless diversion, and you'd be surprised what
you see.
Speaker 6 (04:21):
I can imagine. Come on, my room was dark.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
I turned off my lights. There was a man in
a chair by the window.
Speaker 6 (04:28):
Just opposite that one, the one that's dark.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yeah, he was reading. Then he got up and went
to the door and opened it. A man and a
woman came.
Speaker 6 (04:37):
This was the man on the gray hat. Yeah. Can
you describe the woman.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
She was wearing a blue dress and a white so
it looked like it was made out of linen or something.
Speaker 6 (04:45):
You see your face. No, and they just s walked
in and killed this man. Was that?
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Oh no, no, no, it wasn't. It wasn't like that
at all. They seem to be a very good friend.
The man had been sitting by the window mixing drinks.
As they talked, the woman sat opposite him.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Did it look like they were having an argument?
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Oh no. And suddenly the man in the gray hat
moved around to the back of the other man's chair.
The woman looked up at him and nodded ahead. That's
when I saw the knife. He plunged it into the
man's back. Mister Granger was all, I've never seen anything
like that before.
Speaker 6 (05:18):
How did the killer happen to see you?
Speaker 3 (05:21):
I was leaning out of my window the lights in
the appointment up above which turned on, and they shone
right down on me. I screamed, and the man in
the gray hat looked across and he saw me.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
You sure about all this?
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Of course? I moved away from the window. I went
over and picked up the telephone.
Speaker 6 (05:35):
You were going to call the police, said.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Yes, there was a knock on the door. I had
a terrible feeling with the man in the gray hat.
He knew I was a witness to what had taken place.
Speaker 6 (05:43):
He didn't call.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
I was afraid he'd hear me and break the door down.
I waited. He tried the door. Then I heard scratching
like he was trying a key in the lock.
Speaker 6 (05:52):
He keeps saying, he how did you know it was
a man?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
After a few minutes passed, I went over and opened
my door. I saw him standing at the end of
the Oh, it was a man in the gray head.
He was waiting for him.
Speaker 6 (06:03):
How did you get out?
Speaker 3 (06:04):
I went on the fires gate. Sorry, if I could
find a policeman he could arrest him.
Speaker 6 (06:10):
No, I'll just use your phone.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Are you calling the police?
Speaker 6 (06:15):
But was there a dial tone on this phone when
you tried it? Yeah, it's dead now he's not working.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Nope, there must be the man in the gray head.
He cut the line.
Speaker 5 (06:25):
There must be fifty telephones in this building in your
line pretty hard to find.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
What do we do?
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Terminal box should be in the basement. Let's go do
see if your line has been disconnected.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
I'm afraid come back, knows I'm here. What do we do?
Speaker 6 (06:40):
Get in the kitchen? I'll answered all right, but don't
make a sound.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
Yeah, oh, I beg your pardoner. I was looking for
a young woman.
Speaker 6 (06:54):
I'm sorry, there's no young woman here. Yeah. I must
to get the wrong apartment number. What's the young IMA's name?
It doesn't matter. I have a phone number.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
I'll call her and get the correct bad dress.
Speaker 6 (07:04):
Good night. Okay, he's gone.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
I heard him.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Man wearing the gray hat.
Speaker 6 (07:10):
This was a heavy set filler about forty five, had
on a brown soup.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
That's what was the granger. I'm afraid.
Speaker 6 (07:16):
Okay, locked the window and when I leave, lock the door.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
I'm afraid to eat her alone.
Speaker 6 (07:23):
Okay, miss Benton, and you better come along with me.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Stock down here.
Speaker 6 (07:36):
Let me see no terminal box on this side.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Don't you think you had to call the police.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
Just here it is. We'll see if you're lying, this cutter,
what happened? Hey? That light in the far corner. It's out.
Speaker 7 (07:58):
Stands till somebody down here with us, right, God can't
stop that.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
You can't see any bit of the weekend. Now, don't
make a sound.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
He knows where we are. It's coming twish. I can't
stand me any more.
Speaker 6 (08:19):
It's all right, you just want.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
I had started after the mysterious stranger, but must have
misjudged my distance and passed him, because he clipped me right.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
Behind the ear.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
I did a slow, ungraceful swan dive and landed on
my face. I'll continue with this interesting story in a minute.
I came to in the basement of Pat Benton's apartment house, groaning.
(08:51):
I got to my feet and found the light switch.
I didn't glow flooded the basement with a bilious yellow light.
Pat Benton had disappeared. This was the door of the
girl's apartment. I listened to the panel, hoping for some sound.
Speaker 6 (09:06):
There was none.
Speaker 7 (09:09):
Inside. I flipped the light switch. There was no one there.
I picked up the phone. The dial tone, which.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
Hadn't been there a little while before, was back. I
told my friend, Lieutenant Jake rink And at police headquarters,
Oh this is Granger.
Speaker 6 (09:21):
I got something for you. I thankh.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
I haven't a thing to do down here. I'm just
aching for some work along with a ton of labor
on my desk right now. Well, what on you're related mind?
I'm in the apartment of a girl named pat Menton.
It's twenty four to seventy nine West twenty fourth Street.
Are you having a good time? Something strange happening? I
met her on the street. She claimed she saw a
murder committed. I came back to investigator. Telephone was out
of order. We went out of the basement of check up.
(09:46):
I got slut. She disappeared. What do you want me
to do? I'm in Hammerside of the Midting Persons Bureau.
Yet a John Doe warrant and drop around. I'd like
to see the inside of a certain apartment. Okay, So
you went downstairs to check the telephone, you got hit.
Speaker 6 (10:03):
You woke up, the girl was gone. He was sitting
right here by this window. She claims.
Speaker 5 (10:06):
You saw a man stab by another man wearing a
gray hat. There was a woman with him where over
in that apartment across the court. Yes, bright eyes, how
about dropping over and paying a visit? I know this
is a light now it's been dark until just a
few minutes ago. Yeah, I don't know grangeer barging into.
Speaker 6 (10:21):
Apartments at this hour of the night.
Speaker 5 (10:23):
He supposed the girl was a crack, so there's plenty
of frightened. But she wasn't a crack.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
But how about it? All right, I'll go along with
you this once. This must be it.
Speaker 7 (10:38):
Let's see, this is funny. The name of the plate,
says Hannah Rosalie. The mentoring girl gave me the impression
that a man lived in this apartment.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
So what let's take a chance. Anyway, we're shots in
the basement. Should have a legitimate reason to ask questions, right,
somebody's home?
Speaker 6 (10:58):
All right? And here in Rustling.
Speaker 5 (11:00):
Police Department, Police, what's wrong? I'm good, tenant dranking, ma'am.
We've got a report there's been some shots fired in
this building.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Shot?
Speaker 6 (11:11):
Yes, have you heard anything?
Speaker 3 (11:14):
No?
Speaker 6 (11:14):
No, how long you have been home?
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Why? I just got in a little while ago.
Speaker 6 (11:20):
Would you like.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
To come in look around in case the guys been
indulging in a little target practice.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
Well, miss Rosie, maybe we ought to look down on
that area where lieutenant might spot something.
Speaker 6 (11:33):
Yeah, yeah, you're right by one.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
You come in, look all you like, he'll find out
a very low abiding person.
Speaker 5 (11:39):
I'll just open this window for seconds, see any mean? No,
not a thing, it's too dark. Hell you finished? Yeah,
thank you, miss Roseleie. And we're sorry about the intrusions.
Good night, nice Granger.
Speaker 6 (12:02):
Are you sure you're not dreaming all.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
This up from?
Speaker 6 (12:05):
Nope? Why the gag about the window?
Speaker 5 (12:07):
Wanted to check the chairs the Benton girl told me about,
and it wouldn't be possible for a man to do exactly.
Speaker 6 (12:13):
As she said. I used the window routine to check
the chairs for bloodstains. There were none.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
No, and I didn't see any dead bodies either. They
could have disposed to The body could have been hidden
in a closet, Granger, Hannah Rosey lives in that apartment alone.
Why would a man be sitting there?
Speaker 6 (12:29):
There was a man there some time tonight.
Speaker 5 (12:32):
What the ash tray next to the chair where Pat
Benton claimed she saw the man was loaded with ashes
from a pipe. Well, that doesn't mean a thing. She
could have had a male visitor earlier. Now, load gumshoe.
Speaker 6 (12:42):
I'm leaving this to you.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
Give me a description of the Benton girl our tenant headwaters.
Speaker 6 (12:47):
Okay, I got another idea too, got you can here
part of the curb. Why I think we're being watched? Where?
Speaker 7 (12:55):
Oh the watcher wouldn't be that obvious.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
Car's over there by that fire hydrant.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
I'll go with you, but drop me off at the
next corner. Coming back here, What have I got to lose?
I rode to the corner when the police lieutenant got off,
walked into a phone booth and died. A number A
minute later, I was talking to Cal.
Speaker 6 (13:16):
Hendricks him, DD, watch on your mind.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
Cal, get out your thinking cap un do a take
on a woman named Hannah Rosalie. She's about thirty five,
red hair, five feet six in heels, dress as well,
sounds like a well educated person.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Okay, you want me to jay Hannah Roseley.
Speaker 5 (13:29):
I'll be probably an apartment building at twenty four to
seventy nine or twenty four eighty one West forty fourth Street.
They come up with anything called rankin. I moved out
of the drug store from where I'd phoned the newspaper
man and back to towards twenty fourth eighty one West.
Speaker 6 (13:48):
Forty fourth block away close to the building. I got
a break.
Speaker 5 (13:54):
The man scarried out of twenty four to seventy nine
and went next door at twenty four eighty one, and
I recognized him was the man who had been looking
for Pet Benton when I answered the door of her apartment.
This was interesting. Twenty four to seventy nine was Pat
Benton's building. Twenty four eighty one was the building in
which Hannah Rosalie had her apartment, the one where Pat
(14:16):
saw a murder committed. Look to me, the tail for
the man in the gray hat was in order. In
just a minute, I'll bring you the climax of the case.
When I saw the man whom Pat Benton said was
a murderer go into number twenty four eighty one, I
(14:38):
slipped through the courtyard between the two buildings and made
use of the fire escape which led to Hannah Rosie's window.
I parked outside, feeling like the young man in a
bad minstrel show. Peering underneath a drawn shade. I could
see the man and could barely.
Speaker 6 (14:50):
Hear the voices.
Speaker 5 (14:53):
Yeah, just as I said, the police officer took the
other man with him in his car.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
The young man he's Steve Grangers private eye.
Speaker 6 (15:04):
Yeah he doesn't know you.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Oh well, we can't take a chance now, we'll have
to dispose of the girl.
Speaker 6 (15:11):
As well as Kelvin's body.
Speaker 5 (15:13):
How I have Granger's revolver, I'll have a little surprise
for him.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
You're going to kill her with this gun.
Speaker 6 (15:26):
With his gun.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
The police will ask questions when they find our body.
It'll divert suspicion. What we did to our friend was
murdered too, my dear, it was very careful to carry
Granger's gun in my handkerchief.
Speaker 6 (15:41):
The only prince will be his very smart Well, you
go over to.
Speaker 5 (15:46):
The girl's apartment, pack her closing that old suitcase. I'll
sink it in Long Island sound after.
Speaker 6 (15:52):
I dispose of her, Where are you going now?
Speaker 5 (15:54):
To get the car and I'll get the girl out
of the basement.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Well, it wouldn't it better just to have the girl disappear?
Speaker 5 (16:04):
Look, baby, I'll do it my way.
Speaker 6 (16:05):
And don't you ever forget.
Speaker 5 (16:07):
That I'd heard enough the spot where Pat Bentam was
being held prisoner. It took two minutes to get over
to twenty four to seventy nine and down the steps
to the cellar. I remembered seeing a doorway that led
into a laundry room, probably filled with automatic washes. And whatnot,
and figured it as a logical place to hide the girl.
(16:30):
This was the laundry room. Other than one corner there
was a pile of linens underneath. I looked into the
frightened eyes of the Benton girl.
Speaker 7 (16:40):
Take easy, pat robby out of here in two seconds.
Speaker 6 (16:45):
He held it a nice gag. Job on it me
you are Let's get at those course.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Come on, I was afraid he'd come back.
Speaker 7 (16:55):
He's going to it'll be in for a disappointment.
Speaker 6 (17:01):
Can you stand? Let me help.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
You my legs I can't move.
Speaker 6 (17:05):
We rub them as hard as you can. We haven't
munch time. You'll be here shortly.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
How did you find me?
Speaker 6 (17:10):
Never mind? Keep rubbing, try walking, I'll help you. Come on,
I've had.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
A foot go to sleep, but nothing like this.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Hold it, but your friend, We're gonna find a place
to hide over there behind the furnace and move as
softly as you can, quick.
Speaker 6 (17:28):
And don't make a sound.
Speaker 7 (17:37):
You've gone back when he finds out you've gone. And
look around the laundry room. First, Is there a back
way out of here?
Speaker 3 (17:42):
Yes? Over there to do that? Eat up to this tree.
Speaker 7 (17:45):
Come on, watch him backs while I get the store
up him. You see anything he's done in the laundry room, good,
hurry up, and if he sees us, you run when
I just right grab a Texan, go to police headquarters.
Speaker 6 (18:02):
Tell Lieutenant Rank and what's happened. I don't want to
hit him? Turn around?
Speaker 7 (18:08):
Yeah right, come on, let's move really fast the police,
no first to my apartment.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
Don't you think the man in the gray head might
come over here to my apartment?
Speaker 6 (18:24):
That reminds me, that's right. The strip will take no chances.
And I want to make a phone call. Hello, Cal,
what'd you find out? Uh huh? Let me see. Yeah
(18:47):
they did, But did you get a description of the name?
Uh huh.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
This begins to add up. Sure, that's why one was killed. Yeah,
thanks Cal, you great help. And I no, no, I
don't need know the things see tomorrow was Cal Hendrickson, Oldpaler.
He locked up your friends for me. I think I
know why that man was killed. Has been working around
(19:14):
the country with two men. One is named will Stanik,
the other one's name is Unknn. And the last scene
in Chicago where they fleeced some widow out of our
life savings. But why was the one named killed Stanik?
Is the man who tied you up. He knifed his partner,
probably a disagreement about money or even a double craft.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
Then the police can pick him up and want not
to worry.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
Yeah, except for one thing. What happened to the body
of the man who was killed?
Speaker 3 (19:37):
It wasn't fun.
Speaker 5 (19:38):
No, the well, Lieutenant rank and learns the truth. I
have an idea that miss Rosalie will talk.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
I want you to help me.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Oh.
Speaker 6 (19:47):
Ever seen one of these before?
Speaker 3 (19:48):
Wait? No, no, haven't.
Speaker 6 (19:50):
Well it's a black jack. You hold it like this
and apply it to the top of the person's head.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
I've seen it done in the movies.
Speaker 5 (19:57):
You know how to do well, I could try. Okay,
use it if you have to. Don't spare the muscle.
Both of these people that killers. Remember, I know you've got.
Speaker 6 (20:07):
To bring these characters out into the open door.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
It'll be him.
Speaker 7 (20:11):
Stand over there, look natural and put that black jack
out of sight. All right, Oh, mister Green, come in,
Miss Rosalie.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Oh there you are, pat I'll be looking all over
for you. Who stay away from me. No, really, that's
no way to talk to your cousin, mister Green.
Speaker 6 (20:34):
To keep her away from explain this. Rosie oh, patted
my cousin.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
She she's been having a little trouble and to sec
in her mind. That's why we go to part ands
overlooking each other. I can keep an eye on her,
you see. She yes, she keeps imagining that she sees murder.
She tells people about them in they're inclined to believe her,
and oh wow, it's very embarrassing.
Speaker 6 (20:58):
I can imagine.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
Oh she's told you.
Speaker 6 (21:01):
Of course she has.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
And I'm inclining to believer in Miss Rosalie, particularly once
she mentions a stabbing in your place.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
Really, now, I just have to take her home.
Speaker 6 (21:11):
If you don't, I.
Speaker 5 (21:12):
Definitely do mind, because your little gag won't work, Miss Rosalie.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
I don't have to stand tradition.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
Now, Miss Roslie, when you came to the door, you
know my name, even though I wasn't introduced when Lieutenant
Rank and I were to a place earlier, but nothing.
I perched on your fire escape. I heard you and
Will standing talking.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
About this girl. That's yes, that's what.
Speaker 5 (21:33):
Happened, and you and your partner guessed it. That's why
you are here pretending to be her cousin. You want
to get her out of here, so he can kill her.
Speaker 6 (21:43):
I need No, you're not. You're staying. There's a certain
police lieutenant that wants to chat with you. Baby. Oh
god still.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
Mister Granger, Yes, my dear, you gave me quite a chase.
Speaker 6 (21:59):
You're a smart care this Stanic.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
You got in here and hit in the kitchen right
right before you make the mistake of reaching for that gun.
Speaker 6 (22:09):
Oh take it. Here we are.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
Wow, nice little party I'm having tonight, even if two
of the guests are uninvited. Quiet, Hannah, get the girl
out of here. My car is around the corner on
the side street. Hurry, quite an organized Stanic. Go on, Hannah,
hurry have you a gun?
Speaker 7 (22:33):
