Speaker 1 (00:15):
all right, thank you
for listening to the greatest
non-hits.
I'm chris, and playing the songuh, milk and honey from beck's
midnight vultures album is myco-host, tim Midnight Vultures.
It's the seventh studio albumby Beck and it came out November
16th of 1999.
I guess it was DGC Records.
(00:37):
Looking at Wikipedia, and thisis a wild one For me, it's a
party album.
Is what we think of this?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
as.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Kind of crazy, kind
of out there.
There's been a lot of criticismabout the album being soulless
and things like that.
I kind of get where they'recoming from in a lot of ways,
but I mean I also see like a lotof good in this album as well.
It's super creative.
The one thing that is, in myopinion, impressive about it is
(01:16):
the personnel.
I mean Beck, but some of theother guys that performed on the
album.
They play a lot of differentinstruments, like, for example,
I mean Beck alone.
He does vocals, he's a producerKeyboards, guitar synthesizer,
vocoder, choir vocals, bass, synthesizer, backing vocals,
(01:38):
hand claps, marimbas, harmonica, acoustic guitar, bass.
There's such a wide range there.
Roger Joseph Manning Jr playssynthesizer, piano, tambourine,
shaker, clavinet, vocoder, percussion all on down the line,
electronic drums, keyboards.
It's just such anon-traditional personnel lineup
(02:01):
of a recording act.
You know so it's justin meldell, johnson bass, backing vocal,
shaker percussion, smoky hormelguitar, joy warren warrenker
drums.
There's like a ton of peoplelike that do mastering, mixing
(02:23):
horns, banjo there's a banjopart in there.
Her peterson does that.
So there's a bunch of stuff andit gets funky later on and uh,
it just uh.
There's a lot and I think it'sit's kind of a good album for
this kind of a show because, asyou know we listen.
All the songs on the album ranktheir top three non-hits.
(02:49):
So we're going to have aninteresting time today
determining that I've got acouple of favorite non-hits.
Get Real Paid comes to mind.
Milk and Honey is usually atell on what Tim is going to
choose.
Um, there's a couple other onesin there and uh, of course,
(03:12):
we're going to be goofing offover the whole.
You know, throughout the wholething, as we listened to songs
at the end uh ranked non-hit.
So again, listeners, thank you.
We're coming up on our.
We're going to be beginning ourfourth year in several weeks
from now.
So if you're listening to thisin the future, as you know, if
(03:33):
you've listened to any of theprevious podcasts, you know
we've done the 70s in 2022.
We did the 80s in 2023.
We did the 90s in 2023, we didthe 90s in 2024, but I mean,
technically, our yearanniversary is february 16th.
I think was when we launched our, our first, uh, download our
(03:55):
first episode.
So the the line of order, thechain of command, is that we do
some albums for the 2000s.
I think that would be cool.
The thing is, when I listen toan album like this, about two or
three years ago, I probablywould have said no, I wouldn't
have been able to take it.
(04:16):
And now my net has spreadpretty wide and it's a good
thing, and so I mean every, youknow the trope is that the 2000
suck.
I, you know I'm going to giveit.
Maybe I didn't listen toeverything, and so I think it'd
be good for us to do that.
So we're uh, we're heading inthat direction, but in the
(04:38):
meantime, we're going to using afew other 90s episodes before
we get there.
Nevertheless, what can we sayabout this album?
Well, interesting album cover.
(05:01):
It's like there's a lot of sexin this.
I mean, I'm not gonna lie, it'sjust like.
It's just somebody like in likeleather pants, and it's like
there's another guy likesqueezing something out of a
tube and it makes the shape oflike a hand on a crotch of some
sort.
I don't know, it's weird.
(05:22):
So this is considered funk, rock, alternative rock, hop,
disco, r&b.
Yeah, it has all those things.
It's good like that.
They recorded this in LA.
Shout out to LA.
There are fires going on there,by the way, as we're recording
(05:43):

Some kind of like
effect on the two, two, two, two
, two, two, two, two, two twotwo, two, two, two, two, two,

(43:14):
it's all going away, oh wow.
Speaker 1 (43:21):
Yeah, we don't need
that.
All right, so that was abeautiful song.
Speaker 4 (43:27):
This is beautiful,
beautiful way.
Yeah yeah, this song reminds meof his the later stuff that he
(43:51):
won a Grammy for and his LostCause.
This song definitely has themood of the Lost Cause album.
Speaker 1 (44:03):
I'm not looking at
any Wikipedia or anything, but
just from memory.
I think he got divorced in 2002.
The album that came out thenwas kind of about that fallout.
Speaker 4 (44:15):
Oh, sea Change, that
was Sea Change.
It's a Sea Change-type change.
This is a sea change type song, which is a previous album.
Speaker 1 (44:21):
Yeah, yeah, you were
talking about something after
what I was talking about, causehe went to Grammy like in 05 for
that uh acoustic album that hedid Right.
Speaker 3 (44:45):
Morning phase 2014.
Speaker 4 (44:59):
We haven't done Odele
either.
It's a good album.
Speaker 1 (45:02):
Yeah, it's probably
the most popular yeah.
Maybe the most criticallyacclaimed too.
This one is kind of up there.
I think this is kind of underthe radar, don't you think?
Speaker 3 (45:13):
It's just can't be.
Speaker 1 (45:15):
It's not for the
masses, you know.
Speaker 4 (45:19):
I think, to his niche
fans.
It is really there's.
Speaker 3 (45:26):
I'm not a super fan
but I can.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
I can see myself
getting used to it.
Just takes a few listens rightand like once you know what
you're looking for, it's a good,it's a nice standby.
Speaker 4 (45:46):
Well, this album is
supposed to.
He admitted, this is supposedto be a party album, it's just
yeah.
And then you need a song likethis on there to bring it down a
little bit.
Well, sometimes you need aparty beat, brought down.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
You can't just go up,
and I mean it can, but a lot of
times it's good to evan flowwith the music in the background
.
Speaker 4 (46:09):
Simple lines, simpler
, maybe a little simpler, less
intertwining yeah it's a fineline between clever and stupid.
Yeah, it's true, that's anotherline for that.
Speaker 1 (46:23):
You know Spinal Tap.
But yeah.
Lick my Love Pump.
I think it was the song wherethis is this album's Lick my
Love Pump.
Speaker 3 (46:40):
What'd you say, man?
Speaker 4 (46:45):
The slide guitar is
really good too.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
I gotta know who is
on slide guitar here.
Pedal Steel is Greg LiseL-E-I-S-Z, or maybe it was on
Milk and Honey that he playedthat.
This is true.
Speaker 6 (47:22):
This moment came to
me in a dream.
Speaker 1 (47:45):
Beck is playing back
vocals back vocals.
Speaker 4 (47:51):
Yeah, like background
, like you know, like the
harmony, the raga probably a, alow version, a high version, a
mid version, he could highversion a mid version Could be
doing all of them.
Speaker 1 (48:19):
Feeling or thinking
that would be pedal.
Right, this is pedal guitar, pedal steel, jd and S.
Oh god, it's so beautiful.
Yeah, we're past the banjophase of the album.
(48:42):
All right, that was kind ofcool.
We're kind of getting towardsthe end.
We got three more.

Speaker 1 (51:13):
Yeah, it's a little
bit more uplifting.
Speaker 4 (51:18):
Now it's a little raw
, more uplifting.
Speaker 6 (51:20):
That one's a little
ragga here, yeah.
Speaker 1 (51:24):
It's got some piano
with some synths back and forth.
Speaker 4 (51:28):
It's got a little bit
of Spicoli in there, yeah.
Speaker 5 (51:34):
Hey bud, let's party.
Speaker 3 (51:44):
Whoa, it doesn't
sound like his solo.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
His solos are Like

Speaker 1 (51:51):
Solos are like butter
.
Speaker 4 (51:53):

That was a good album
, man.
Let's, let's, get into our topthree.
What are you thinking for yournumber three?
Oh, the very the first threesongs are out from all the way,
from get real paid at thebeginning to deborah.
Okay, what are you thinking?
Speaker 4 (58:11):
um number three
beautiful way.
I think that had just the righttype of feel to sort of cut the
album in half in a way uh, in agood way sort of a all the you
know, all the bangers are on onethrough nine.
Speaker 1 (58:31):
There were a ton of
bangers on this.
I'm going to say my numberthree is going to be Deborah,
the last one that wow, reallyyeah, I didn't think, okay, yeah
deborah, the last one, that wow, really, yeah, I didn't think
okay, yeah, well, I mean I, Imean I really appreciated the
the dexterity of yeah, beck'stalents.
You know, on that, like hisvoice was really the rounding it
out soulful and uh, and now Isee that he's got talent as if I
(58:55):
didn't need to already, yeah, but okay, that's my number three
all right, my number two is getreal paid.
Speaker 4 (59:02):
Yeah, that song kind
of you know grew on me a lot
this, this listen around it'svery catchy.
Speaker 1 (59:13):
It's four minutes and
20 seconds on the nose, okay,
okay.
Speaker 4 (59:16):
Yeah, yeah, really
catchy song.
Speaker 1 (59:18):
That was my number
two as well, I was.
Speaker 4 (59:20):
I agree.
Speaker 1 (59:21):
I think it's uh, it
had some really good hooks in it
and it flowed and it was superlike aggressive and confident
and it was great little soloyeah.
Speaker 4 (59:34):
It's got it's kind of
like the rocket, like a weird
spacey.
Speaker 3 (59:42):
Leaves of the Sea
solo.
Speaker 1 (59:45):
Yeah, it brought a
little bit more R&B to Thomas
Dolby.
Speaker 4 (59:49):
Right interesting.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
It's more soulful of
a Thomas Dolby kind of a thing.
Oh, wow.
Marrying soul and technology.
Speaker 4 (59:58):
Blinded by the
science yeah, wrapped up like a
douche.
Blinded by the science.
Blinded, yeah, wrapped up likea douche.
Blinded me with science.
Okay, dolby, yeah, all right, well number one for me.
You know it's gotta be milk andhoney, Milk and honey.
And then they really slowed itdown at the end and it kind of
(01:00:24):
almost got all like Rosebuddylike Citizen Kane.
Rosebud yeah, it's like you canhave it all, but then it can be
stripped away from you, maybewith all his nonsensical lyrics.
I don't know, I don't know, Idon't know what he was getting
at.
Speaker 1 (01:00:41):
Yeah me either.
Speaker 4 (01:00:42):
But it was an
excellent song, it was.
Speaker 1 (01:00:44):
It was an excellent.
It is an excellent song and Imean I kind of wanted to go
there.
You're going to be different, aren't you?
To be different?
And just to bring another songinto this, I'm going to say
Peaches and Cream, just to bringanother song into this.
I'm going to say Peaches andCream.
It's my number one.
Nobody chose Hollywood Freaks.
Hollywood Freaks is such a goodsong too, man.
Oh yeah, well, that's the onethat had the bongos and
(01:01:10):
percussion.
Speaker 4 (01:01:10):
Yeah Well, Peaches
and Cream.
Peaches and Cream Also verycatchy.
Speaker 1 (01:01:15):
Yeah, it was just so
catchy, a lot of overlays yeah,
a lot of overlays, and all that, yeah, exactly.
I liked the.
It was playful.
Speaker 4 (01:01:24):
It was a little
raunchy.
On another day, Peaches andCreams could be my number one.
Speaker 1 (01:01:28):
Yeah, it's creative
and you can go places with it
and it makes me hungry a littlebit, yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:01:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:01:34):
Well, let's get some
poutine, maybe some milk and
honey, some gravy and all thatstuff and we'll call it a day.
Speaker 4 (01:01:43):
Let's leave our
audience with a clip maybe yeah,
let's do it our plumphindquarters squared up and
pointed right at the cameraalright, I think that was
apropos.
Speaker 1 (01:01:55):
Alright, take care.
