Thom Pollard (00:00):
This is the happiness quotient. This is Thom
Pollard, thank you for takingthe time out of your day to
listen, I appreciate it. Iappreciate you. Thank you. I am
inserting into this episode ofThe happiness quotient, a
YouTube video that essentiallygoes You don't need to see it.
But if you would like to see itinstead of listen to it, it is

(00:23):
on my YouTube channel onYouTube, the happiness quotient
and if you type that in in thesearch bar, you'll find it
easily it will also be in theliner notes of this episode, I'm
going to share with you a littlebit about my brother and an old
journal that I found of his witha very beautiful poem written

(00:43):
inside, as well as thisexperience of buying a car not
too long ago and learning alesson. Let's put it that way.
So before I let you go into myYouTube verse, Be sure that you
subscribe, share, like commentleave ratings, it helps a long
way in getting more people toknow about the happiness

(01:04):
quotient. And here we go. Thebirds are active this morning.
It's 730 near Hart's location inNew Hampshire, I just wanted to
do a quick check in I was goingthrough I can hear some geese to

(01:25):
geese.
Yeah, yesterday, those two geesewent to land in the tiny pond
down the dirt road here. Andwhen they saw me they, as they
were coming in for landing, theysaw me went around and just took
off and flew over to this pondover, behind and to the left of

(01:47):
the camera. And so I'm hopingthat they found some peace today
and were able to land in thepond. I am standing literally in
the middle of bird feederactivity. I essentially just
throw all the bird seeds out onthis banister, and the red
squirrels, gray squirrels nowthe Chipmunks are coming out.

(02:09):
We've had about 10 differentvarieties of birds, there's a
little bit of SUID over herethat they haven't really
discovered. But this is thecenter of all activity. And the
big windows are here to theright of the camera. It's my
favorite little spot. I wantedto do a quick video today I was

(02:30):
going through storage yesterday.
And I came through a box thathad some effects from my
brother, Jeff, and here's one ofhis journals. And I was moved,
obviously, you know, when yousee stuff from somebody you love
that's not around anymore, itbrings you right back as if

(02:53):
they're alive, and they're nevernot alive in your mind. And so
Jeff had been quite the artist, and he had these plans for a
poetry box. And this This is theplans for this poetry box that
he was interested in doing. Andthis is a little case that you'd

(03:17):
pull drawers out. And it wouldbe shreds of old poems. And and
then in in the open top might bephotographs, hidden photographs
of family members and thingslike that. And in that same
storage box was this smallwooden box and it had been

(03:38):
broken into about 20 pieces. Andso I came up with this idea that
perhaps I would get togethersome of my brother's old
friends, designers, artists, andsee if they might be interested
in putting a book together withhis poetry boxes and the poems
that he wrote. And this poem.

(04:02):
This This isn't exactly isanother drawing of his. That's
the st. Alvar portrait. Mygrandfather's name was St.
Alvar. So this is pretty fittingpoem of Jeff probably written in
1997. I would imagine around thetime that Jeffrey and Adrian
moved to Livingston, Montana tothe Paradise Valley valley where

(04:27):
fly fishing was King and isking. I am a traveler. I am a
traveler, but sittingstationary, and the country is
moving past me. All in motion, all connected, revolving around
each other, all together onething, I don't belong yet. And,

(04:53):
well, he was gone. Seven yearslater, about eight years later,
and I found other homes thatwere very similar, this
beautiful journal that only haslike probably just a few pages
written. And I honestly don'tquite know what to do if I
should use this journal to makeremarks about him or her. Well,

(05:16):
growing up, huh, growing up, Iam leaving for Cape Cod, today,
I'm going to go visit an old oldfriend. That friend is not old,
10 years older than me. And it'san interesting visit, because
that friend reached out to meand asked

(05:36):
for a favor. And as you know, Ihave the happiness quotient
podcast. And I made an offer topretty much any people that I
know and care about and havesomething remarkable or
insightful to say that, that Iwould provide a forum for them
if need be, or at least would beable to do some recording if I

(06:00):
had the time on my hands. And sothis friend asked me to go visit
the family on Cape Cod. And I'mgoing to record an interview
probably tomorrow morning, Iwon't get down there till five
and spend some time down therein the evening. And then in the
morning, we'll wake up and we'llrecord an interview about a

(06:22):
monumental and significant eventin that person's life. And I
have been entrusted with that.
And so it's pretty, it's prettyincredible. I feel like somber
in the responsibility of it andactually am excited and a little

(06:43):
bit nervous. This is huge in aperson's life. And that will
soon be an episode on thehappiness quotient. And I'll
share it with you all. And thatwill be soon it will be in the
next couple of weeks. So pretty, pretty interesting things to

(07:05):
think about that. So on toanother thing before I let you
all go if you're still with me.
So yeah, I've recently bought acar, ooh, now everybody knows
what I drive a car that's 15years old. I literally had gone

(07:26):
three years without anautomobile. And well, I loaned
my main set of wheels to myoldest, and that was well worth
it. I just wasn't that busy. Andwhen I went to Mount Everest, in
2019, my son had that car. And Iborrowed it occasionally on

(07:49):
weekends. But fortunately didn'treally need a lot of
transportation. And then COVIDcame, that car was totaled in an
accident, no human beings wereinjured in it. But as you know,
the that COVID was not onlydevastating from a health

(08:10):
standpoint, and many lives werelost and are still being lost,
even though it's not really inthe news. But from a financial
standpoint, it was prettydevastating to a lot of people
and it wasn't devastating to me,but I got shut down. I went, I'd
say probably 10 months, it wasabout 10 months without a single
billable day. Like oh my gosh,so any reserves that that were

(08:35):
around were depleted. It was itwas vicious, but one of the
things that fell by the waysideor at least I wasn't that
worried about was the idea ofhaving a car. So after leaving
Everest coming home from Everestin 2019, to recently to about

(08:55):
three or four weeks ago, Ididn't have a car and I decided
to buy a car and I decided likeOkay, it's time let's let's get
a car and do this. You know, I'mstarting to get busy again. And
well, so I found I was reallyreally really really really

(09:18):
picky about the car that I wasgoing to buy and so I went on
Craigslist and I went on allsorts of websites like car vana
and then I went I looked throughdealerships it was going to be a
used car, I didn't want to buy anew car. I didn't mind about
mileage. I just wanted a carthat somebody took good care of.
And and I contacted a lot ofpeople and anybody that seemed

(09:42):
even slightly just off Iscratched the deal I wasn't
going to buy a car from if yousee the pictures on the first
sale ads if you see in thebackground like a junk show on
in the person's yard orsomething no way like if they
leave their yard like that, howdo they take care of their car

(10:02):
right? So I find this Volvo loveXC 70s and it that the pictures
were meticulous in the house inthe background really nice this
Cape in South Freeport, Maine.
And granted it was a little, alittle bit of a drive for me to
get there. Buteverything about it looked

(10:24):
great. The car spotless, absolutely dialed in for a car
that's 1415 years old, like thisthing is in mint shape. And it
was at the very top end of theKelley Blue Book and I thought,
Okay, well they've taken goodcare of it. So take it for a
test drive, have a buddy of minemeet me over there, Steve meets
me who works in the area. He's aused car guru. He's probably

(10:48):
bought 200 used cars over theyears and knows how to make a 12
or 15 year old car work. He'sgot three kids and each of them
have probably had five used carsover the years. So we go for a
test ride all systems go brandnew tires, the brakes are good.
The car hums beautifully. Stereorocks, Windows work, he back

(11:12):
seats are even heated everythingand it checks out. I do a VIN
check. What did I not do? No, Idid not go to a mechanic to have
them do a code test on it. Itrusted these people they seemed
really really kind and nice andoutgoing kinda like me maybe 10

(11:33):
years older. And I just thoughtyou know what these people are
so into their stuff. Their housewas absolutely spotless, like,
literally look like a cleaningperson had just been through
cleaning. It was meticulous andI thought perfect. This is the
people I'm looking for to buy acar. So I couldn't drive the car

(11:55):
home that day. I gave them thecash for the car. I took out a
not a great percentage rateloan, believe me COVID wasn't
kind to me. I paid them cash forthe car. So it was essentially
mine went back two days later, they were not home to pick up
the car. About 45 minutes later, check engine light goes on. Oh,

(12:19):
awesome. So I get one of thosecode readers the next day,
texted them say hey, you know, the the check engine light went
on? Well, our mechanic said allyou do is you unplug the
battery, and you put it back init the check engine light goes
off. And I'm thinking to myself,Oh, great. So it still doesn't

(12:42):
pass inspection. If there's aproblem with the car, the code
ultimately has to reset, andthey won't pass inspection until
it resets. Turns out it needs anew catalytic converter. We're
talking 1200 1400 bucksprobably. I let the people know
nothing. Nothing, not a wordfrom them. Apparently, there is

(13:06):
no recourse. I don't know if Ihave any rights to go to court
to ask them for that money or atleast split it. I love the car.
In my opinion, it's worth payingthat extra money to keep it I'm
going to get yours out of thisthing. It's got great mileage
and nothing these people whohave a beautiful house in South

(13:31):
Freeport, Maine, which is if youwill, you know not not a crappy
section have another house onSugarloaf Mountain as a ski
family had four cars one of thecars in their garage was covered
under one of those car tarpswith fine silky material so they
have some fancy car and here'sthis guy walks in unbeknownst to

(13:56):
them whatever but haha we'regonna see if we can't screw this
guy over for whatever the checkengine light is and then they
give me the intel on how to makethe check engine light go off.
So I'm stuck with about a $1,400bill on this car that's paid for
that I want and you just thethings you learn about people

(14:23):
all that glitters is not gold. Iguess that's the that's the
that's really the essence ofwhat I'm talking about today.
All that glitters is not gold.
And this is one example ofpeople being arrogant and above.
Not the law legally per se butabove some moral law. Like we're

(14:43):
going to pay we're going to asksomebody to pay over. Kelley
Blue Book for this car thatgranted is in other than the
catalytic converter is dialedbut this Eric Kant's in and put
this lack of virtue and thislack of, of moral character like

(15:03):
to put 1000 more bucks in theirpocket. And I know that the
woman dri is buying a new carwith the cash that I gave her
and her husband they're onInstagram and Facebook and
everything looking like thiscool family filled with morals
and they have a small puppy thatwas adorable, but but for 1000

(15:27):
bucks, and it's fine. And am Igonna sit around and resent them
right now it might seem like I'mcoming off ever so essence Lee,
resentful, but I'm not. It'sjust it's the things you learn
about people and about yourself.
Do I feel like taking the timeto drive to Freeport, Maine to
bring someone to court for 1000bucks. Not really. These people

(15:52):
have to live with themselves, they probably have no real, they
probably don't even care. Theyprobably think it's funny, high
five, got an extra 1000 bucks topay the mortgage on their two
houses and four cars. So allthat glitters is not gold. The

(16:12):
people that we put up onpedestals the people in the
community that I'm part of, ifyou will, the Everest community,
there's people that I know whohave a ton of followers on
Instagram, and I see posts, youknow, some some are really good
friends of mine and and and weknow each other's weaknesses to

(16:33):
the nth degree and love eachother for those weaknesses. But
some of the people put up onpedestals well, they're, they're
not what the Instagram postsseem to dictate or show. So look

(16:53):
in the mirror, and get, get yourown world straight, clean your
own room, be kind, and moral andfilled with truth and seek out
the truth and go with yourheart. The minute you put
another individual or a humanbeing on any element of a
pedestal, you're screwed. Sodon't measure yourself on those

(17:14):
people on Instagram, God turnInstagram off Facebook off. Oh,
go with the people who have yourbest interests at mind. Those
are the people you want to spendtime with. And, and those people
will challenge you and willdemand the best out of you and

(17:34):
will demand you to go the extramile to do the right thing for
yourself. So it's not alwaysgoing to be fun. But don't judge
yourself on on those people thatyou click like on or or think
are amazing, incredible peoplejudge yourself 100% on the

(17:56):
person that you are today andand on the person perhaps that
you were yesterday and endeavourjust to leave this planet ever.
So more evolved than the souland the human being that you
were when you entered thisrealm. And so that's my spiel

(18:17):
off to Cape Cod. I go today inmy check engine light Volvo that
needs a new catalytic converterthat fortunately has a sticker
on it for the next six weeks. SoI don't have to cough up 1500
bucks. But yet, and those peopleI don't expect to see a check
from them in the mail. And youknow what? Cool, thank you for
the lesson. Thank you, Mark forthe lesson. I'll take your money

(18:41):
if you want to send me money forthe catalytic converter. But
thank you for the lesson. That'sme walking blindly into
something I put them up on alittle pedestal. These are good
people. Look at that beautifulhouse. No, all that glitters is
not gold. Boom, ditto. Look atme. I'm not glittering. Like
look at me. LikeI am not glittering. I'm in my

(19:01):
shorts. And it's about 32degrees. And I'm barefoot
freezing my ass off out hereholding my brother's journal.
And there's a coffee that's notsteaming anymore inside and the
cat's looking at me and Soulaneeds to be walked. So people I
love you. Have a great day. Justgo and kick some ass man and be
good. Go find the truth in yourown heart and go after that.

(19:24):
Because that's the only thing atthe end of the day that matters.
And the only person you everhave to really worry about is
you unless you have kids who areunder 18 take care of them too.
And let them be who they are.
value their individuality andtheir uniqueness and you are
