Motivation is unreliable. Identity is everything.

Most men start strong, but when life gets busy, they fall off. Why? Because they rely on motivation instead of locking in their non-negotiables.

In this episode, JP Bolwahnn breaks down the exact process to build unshakable discipline, unstoppable habits, and a rock-solid identity—so that success becomes automatic.

You’ll learn:
The power of non-negotiables—and why they separate elite men from the average.
How to build 2–3 anchor habits that keep you consistent no matter what.
The secret to habit tracking so you never lose momentum again.
Why progressive overload in training is the key to long-term strength—physically and mentally.
How to push past your comfort zone and forge the identity of a Highly Effective Man.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome to the Highly Effective man podcast, hosted
by former Navy SEAL turned lifeand fitness coach.
I'm your host, jp Bolwan.
This podcast is your resourcefor unlocking the healthiest,
most productive and highlyeffective man within you.
Let's go.
What's up, guys?

(00:31):
Welcome back to the HighlyEffective man podcast, the show
where we cut through the noiseand get straight to what works.
We look at how to buildunshakable discipline,
elite-level fitness and a lifeof purpose.
So, if you're a busy guy that'strying to level up your body,
your mindset and performance, you're in the right place.
So today's episode, this one'sgoing to be a game changer.

(00:52):
We're talking aboutnon-negotiables.
Okay, these are the dailyhabits that will define you as a
man.
See, a lot of guys.
Just they wait for themotivation to do something right
.
They start strong, but whenlife gets busy they fall off.
Why?
Well, because they haven'tcommitted to a certain identity.
Ok, the truth is, successful, successful men, they don't just

(01:16):
have habits, they have rules orstandards that they follow, no
matter what.
Ok, this episode is aboutbuilding those standards for
yourself so that disciplinebecomes automatic.
Okay, there's no more secondguessing, no more excuses, just
results.
So let's lock in thosenon-negotiables today.
So let's be real.

(01:38):
Okay, because most men failbecause they rely on motivation.
All right, so tell me if thissounds familiar.
You start working out, you'reeating, right, you're setting
goals, and then what Lifehappens?
Right, you get busy, you gettired, the motivation you were
riding on, it's gone.

(01:59):
Okay, but listen, success isnot built on just motivation.
It's built on your identity.
If you say I'm trying to behealthy, you've already lost.
If I'm trying to be moredisciplined, you're giving
yourself an escape route.
But if you decide and that'sthe key word decide.

(02:22):
I am a man who takes care of mybody.
I am a man who shows up nomatter what.
I'm a man who leads withdiscipline, then there's no
debate.
It's just what you do, it'spart of who you are.
So let me ask you who do youwant to become?

(02:45):
Because your habits, yournon-negotiables that will define
what happens, all right.
So how do you buildnon-negotiables that actually
stick?
You pick two to three anchorhabits that become part of your
identity.
These are the actions thathappen, no matter what.

(03:07):
Even when you say you're busy, you're tired or you don't feel
like it, you still do them.
Some examples might be likedaily movement right, I train
every day.
Maybe it's weights, maybe it'sstretching, but you move, no
matter what.
Nutrition discipline fuel yourbody for performance, whether

(03:30):
it's meal prep, hitting yourprotein goals or staying
hydrated, you control what goesin morning routine.
Start your day with intention.
Maybe it's waking up at 5 am,journaling and setting your
priorities, but you know thefirst hour of your day is done,
right, right, these habitsaren't optional.

(03:50):
They're who you are, okay.
So take a second and thinkabout what are two to three
non-negotiables that I want inmy life.
Say them out loud, write themdown, because if you don't
define them, you'll always bestuck in trying mode.
Okay, now let's talk abouttracking.

(04:15):
Tracking, because here's thetruth if you don't track it, you
won't stick to it.
It's easy to say, yeah, Iworked out this week, but did
you really?
Did you hit your protein intake?
Did you stay consistent?
Winners track their progressperiod.
Okay, so set up a habit tracker.
It can be like a whiteboard, anotebook, an app, I don't care

(04:37):
how you do it, just make sureyou see it daily, because when
you track your habits, youcreate accountability, and when
you see progress, you stayconsistent.
And this is where most men fail.
They don't track their actions.
But you, you're different,right?
You're committed.
You're set up to tracking.
You're setting up a trackingsystem today, okay.

(05:01):
So this week we're also dialingin the community.
In my highly effective mancommunity, we're doing a
dumbbell strength trainingprogram for the month and we're
focusing on progressive overload, right.
So every week we're looking atadding weight, increasing reps,
pushing a little bit past ourcomfort zone.
But this isn't just aboutgetting stronger physically.

(05:22):
It's about training your mindto handle resistance, because
discipline is like a muscle itgrows when you push it.
Most guys quit the secondthings get hard.
Highly effective men.
They thrive in discomfort.
So here's your challenge Set astrength goal, whether it's
adding weight, improving reps ormastering a movement.

(05:46):
Track your progress and committo steady improvements and then
push past those mental limits.
No excuses, okay.
So let's recap this week we'regoing to lock in your identity.
We're going to stop relying onmotivation.
We're going to set two to threenon-negotiables and make them

(06:07):
automatic.
And then you're going to trackyour habits daily, because what
gets measured gets improved.
And then, number four, you'regoing to push your limits in
training and discipline and life.
Now, if you got value from thisepisode, don't just listen to it

(06:27):
, act on it.
