(00:35):
Welcome back to the HighlyEffective man podcast, the show
dedicated to helping busy menover 35 reclaim their strength,
energy and confidence.
I'm your host, jp Bolwan13-year Navy SEAL, veteran life
and fitness coach, firefighter, and your guide to mastering the
mindset and discipline neededfor peak performance.
So let's dive in, gentlemen.
(00:55):
Discipline is the silent forcebehind every great achievement.
It's the foundation foreverything we want in life,
whether it's to be stronger, tolead better or to lead with
purpose.
Today, we're diving into whatit means to embrace discipline
as a way of life.
I'll share insights from my ownstory, some powerful lessons
(01:16):
from history and, mostimportantly, give you actionable
steps to build discipline, starting right now.
But before we begin, I want youto reflect for a moment.
Ask yourself where in my lifeam I struggling to show up
consistently?
Maybe it's skipping workouts, maybe it's feeling unfocused at
work or breaking promises tomyself.
(01:38):
Keep that in mind, because atthe end of this episode, you'll
have a clear plan to change that.
That in mind because at the endof this episode you'll have a
clear plan to change that NowI've faced many moments where
discipline wasn't just a tool, but it was the one thing keeping
me moving forward.
One of my biggest challenges, that was transitioning from the
SEAL teams to civilian life andthen deciding to play college
(01:59):
football at 33 years old.
Okay, so, at five, six, 185pounds, I wasn't your
prototypical recruit.
Okay, my teammates were faster, they were younger, they had
years of experience and I couldhave just quit Right, I could
have just said that's not for me.
But I decided that if Icouldn't control my size or my
(02:21):
age, I could control my workethic.
Okay, so prior to the season, you know, I worked out as hard
as I could.
Every morning I hit the gymearlier than anybody.
Every practice, you know, Iwould study.
I would you know, work harderin film study, I would you know,
make sure I knew every playinside and out.
And then, on the days when Ifelt out of place or defeated, I
(02:44):
just reminded myself okay, discipline is about showing up
even when nobody's watching.
Okay, when I finally steppedonto the field, I wasn't just
playing football, I was provingto myself that discipline has
the power to turn obstacles intoopportunities.
Okay, so this is why disciplinematters.
(03:05):
All right, let me hit you witha quick stat People who
consistently follow habits are76 more likely to achieve their
goals 76 more likely to achievetheir goals.
Okay, why?
Because discipline compoundsover time.
It's like a snowball gainingmomentum.
(03:28):
I don't know if you guys haveseen the book Discipline is
Destiny, but that's by RyanHoliday.
He says discipline isn't aboutdeprivation, it's about freedom.
So think about it.
When you're disciplined, you'rein control of your choices
instead of letting life controlyou.
And here's an example TheodoreRoosevelt, one of America's most
(03:50):
disciplined leaders, lived withwhat he called a strenuous life
.
You know, despite battlingchronic illnesses, he pursued
hard work, physical fitness andcontinuous self-improvement.
He saw discipline not as aburden but as a path to
greatness.
Okay, so think about it.
Where in your life do you feellike a lack of discipline is
(04:15):
holding you back?
You know, write it down or justtake a mental note right now.
But there's three pillars todiscipline, okay, and to embrace
them.
You've got to focus on numberone setting clear goals.
Clarity gives you disciplinewith purpose.
Okay, start small.
Maybe it's committing to threeworkouts a week, or waking up 30
(04:38):
minutes earlier to plan yourday.
Number two is control yourenvironment.
If your environment is full ofdistractions, discipline will
struggle.
Put boundaries around yourphone, clear clutter from your
workspace and create a spacewhere you can focus.
And then, number three, leaninto discomfort.
(04:58):
Here's the hard truth.
Growth lives outside yourcomfort zone.
Whether it's a grueling workoutor a tough conversation or
pushing yourself in your career, discipline thrives in
discomfort.
The more you practice leaningin, the stronger you get.
So what's one uncomfortablething you can commit to today
(05:20):
that will move you closer toyour goal?
So let's get practical.
I want you to pause thisepisode right now and take five
minutes to do three things Writedown one small goal that you'll
commit to this week, identifythe one distraction you'll
(05:41):
eliminate, starting today, andthen choose one challenge that
you'll lean into instead ofavoiding Now if you're driving
or on the move.
Think about it now and revisitthis exercise later.
But discipline is built on onedecision at a time, and this is
your first step Some dailypractices for discipline you
(06:06):
know.
To make it stick.
Here's some things you can do.
Start your day with anaffirmation right, say out loud
I am disciplined and determinedto achieve my goals, because
words shape thoughts andthoughts shape your mindset.
Okay, journal your wins andchallenges.
Write down what you've achievedand where you've struggled.
(06:29):
Reflection is going to buildself-awareness and then focus on
consistency over intensity.
Discipline isn't about doing itall at once.
It's about showing up every day.
Remember small wins compoundinto big results.
All right, one of the men inour community shared how he
(06:50):
struggled with discipline aroundfitness.
Okay, he started with, just youknow, five minute workouts
three times a week.
All right, you know, you saygoing in for five minutes, but
the next thing, you know, you'rethere for 30 minutes.
All right, but that small stepturns into a daily habit and
then, six months later, he'sstronger, he's more focused, has
more energy for his kids.
(07:12):
And discipline is about beingperfect.
It's about progress.
Now I'm going to leave you withthis.
Discipline is the silent forcebehind every great achievement.
It's what keeps you movingforward when the results aren't
immediate and nobody's cheeringyou on and you have every excuse
(07:33):
to you know to quit.
Remember this mantra Disciplineequals freedom and freedom
equals fulfillment.
Ok, write it down, say it everymorning Discipline equals
freedom, freedom equalsfulfillment and live it.
Now, gentlemen, that's a wrapfor today.
