Speaker 1 (00:01):
The mission of your life is not to preserve it,
but to spend it, and to spend it properly. What
are you going to use your life for? Not to
How do I make sure I'm going to have enough
for me? That is a mentality of lack that will
land you squarely where you didn't want to be.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
That's impossible.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Let me tell you what I believe.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
What's your weakness?
Speaker 2 (00:24):
It's not your technique. Don't think you know.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
You the Impossible Life Podcast, and you're sitting on a
winning lot of.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Second an idea that is fully formed, fully understood, that sticks.
This is the Impossible Life Podcast because Nick and I
are attempting to live impossible lives. What we know is
that nothing is impossible. So instead of using impossible as
an excuse to not try, we'll use the pursuit of
(00:57):
impossible as an accelerant for greatness. If something's never been
done before, that just means it's unexplored. If they tell
you it's too hard, it's just waiting to be simplified.
Impossible as a default label used by uncourageous people unwilling
to take a risk. The real truth is this the
(01:18):
solution to any impossible task. Starts with this question, if
I had to what would it take? What would it take?
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Welcome to another episode of the Impossible Life Podcast. I'm
your co host, Nick Surface, and I'm looking across as
a man who was born with a flak jacket attached
to his brain. That's right, friends, Garrett Uncle back, a
man who has a mind that is impenetrable to noise, pressure, chaos,
and distraction.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
There is some truth to that.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
That's well, dude, it's it's funny that you say that
because you have uncommon focus, which I think is I
heard Chad Wright on on Joe Rogan's podcast, and he
talking about how seals have this terrible quality that serves
them well in that if you're not part of the mission,
you never crossed their mind. Yeah, And he was talking
about how like he's been a bad friend to people
(02:10):
because he would just get mission focused and like literally
one of his friends got cancer and like was dying
and he wouldn't even return his calls because it was like,
I'm on mission.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Yeah, my brain goes into Fort Knox, right, I am.
I am thick headed. Yeah, we know that literally and figuratively.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Yeah. I love the sledgehammer to the brain story.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
People always said, like, thick headed, it's like a bad thing.
I'm like, you want to be thin headed.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
It's a good point. My dexa scan I one of
the best things that came out of Besides, I was
very pleased with the results.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Mega mind was Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
The guy, he's like, well, they're not cracking that skull,
and I was like, that's right. It's very thick, So
praise the Lord. Yeah, do you want a paper thin skull?
I don't think so. No. Nobody said, you know, it
would be great, would be soft brained, that's babe or
soft I.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Need to shed a quarter pound where I want to
do it.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Thickness of skull save me at least a pound. Anyways, Okay,
today's episode ge is this is We're going to give
you all the ways to waste your life, which is
like a very counterintutors thought process. Subtitle don't do this.
Also further subtitle, you're probably doing some or all of these.
And so this is just for everybody out there because
we man, we are such a distracted society. I looked
(03:21):
this up, g and I didn't tell you this answer.
I looked at how much time people spend on their
mobile device per day, and it was like more than
they would like five hours and twenty minutes, which you said, oh,
I spent an hour a day texting. So I was like, well,
you're I know, you're not texting people like gifts. You're
texting for business. So I was like, let's give people
the benefit of doubt. Let's see how much time the
average American spends on I don't know social media, because
(03:42):
there's no way you're going there's only so many people
that that's worked for, right, what do you think the
average time is? G because you haven't seen.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
This average time on your phone per person, no social media,
I have social media. Yeah, oh it's going to be
way higher than what I would think is a reasonable answer.
What's reasonable? I'm going to guess the average time on
social media per person, and this is a sad number.
I'm going to go six and a half.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Hours more than what they spend on their phone. Well,
oh it's five oh yeah, five hours that total full time.
I want to give you that for like a point
of reference.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Okay, well, then I would just say less than that,
probably four hours. Okay, So I'm surprised for that though,
I would think, you know, The unfortunate truth is people
spend way too much time on social media.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah, it's it's globally people average two hours and twenty
four minutes in America, Bro, globally. We're not talking about
globally in America. This is actually kind of interesting to me.
We're two hours and nine minutes is the act?
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I think you got some jacked update over there.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Look, chatch ept never lies.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Yeah, that's that's not true.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
This is according to so X anyways. But the point being,
the point being, let's say, let's say you disagree with that,
you think it's more, that's still ten percent of the
entire hours you have for the day.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
That's wild survey and audience and say, by show of hands,
who here thinks they shoul should probably spend more time
on their phones? Right? No one, it's going to raise
out exactly who here thinks that they should probably spend
less time on their phones? It would probably be ninety
to ninety five percent of the audience would.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Raise their hands, right. But the reason I use that
as an example, the dopamine hit that you get from
social and like, there was that Netflix documentary that talked
about how like all the higher ups at these companies
don't let their kids have the same tech that they
basically make their living on. And there's a reason for that.
That don't mean hitting like that need where you'll see
people just open their phone almost like a monkey that's
(05:32):
been trained, and they're like, why did you open your phone?
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Your brain went into dumb.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Mode, right, And I have that sometimes I'll have like
this urge to open my phone and I'm like, I
don't need to do that. Yeah, there's no reason, but like,
for whatever reason, I want to do that. So the reason
I'm saying that we are massively distracted as a culture today.
And you said a great quote once that I quote
to people all the time. You said, if the devil
can't destroy it, he'll distract you. And I think that
is a lot more likely to happen that you would
(05:58):
be a person that no, I don't need to some
crazy adversity. I don't need to throw them off course,
I'm going to entertain them literally the death. You're gonna
spend your whole life looking at gifts and means and
sending reels to people and checking sports scores and reading
about celebrity news, and then when you get to be
about eighty five years old. It's gonna be like, what'd
you do with your life? I had a really good time. Oh,
I mean great. I guess you didn't do any harm,
(06:21):
but you certainly didn't live up to what God's purpose
was on you are.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Some of this thought process might come from we have
an adversary in China against the US, and China may
perhaps have thought, well, if I can't get enlistment down,
maybe I'll just make all the enlisties fat and useless.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Right man, what a crazy thought process. How would you
do that?
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Ge? Yeah, through their phone, through through die I mean,
through just a cultural virus. But again, it's just it's
that same thought process, and that's Satan's thought towards us.
If I can't you know, if these people are saved
air quotes there, if they have salvation, if I can't
destroy their sol because remember, that's not really what Satan
cares about. He's not trying to like. Satan doesn't have
(07:05):
a scoreboard with God to see who gets more souls.
Satan hates God and every person that he can use
against God or get them off of their mission and
purpose that God has for their life is really the
same as him. To him as dragging someone down to hell.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Yeah, And I mean it's so practical though, because how
many people would be like, man, I'm really struggling to
find the time to read my Bible. It's like, well,
flip up your phone, look at how much screen time
you spend on social media or whatever else. Can you
find it there?
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Yes? You can?
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Okay, great, So it's not that you don't have time.
You just need to be disciplined and more.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
So today's episode is literally just Blindspot Revealer for you.
It's seven ways to waste your life aka just miss
it completely. So gee, let's just.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Here we go. Number one, number one way to waste
your life right. And in all of these we'll talk
about some of the solutions, but in all of these,
understand that this is what not to do. Right. And
here's number one superficial prayer. If you cannot make God
important in your life for at least a few minutes
in your day, how could you ever hope to have
(08:13):
a meaningful life. But if you can't do that for
at least a few minutes, what is your hope for
having a meaningful life? When the creator of the universe
that the hands that made you want to have a
relationship with you, and you can't give him some of
your time. What actually is worth your time?
Speaker 2 (08:31):
So tell me, let's let's define superficial prayer for me.
G Let's give me an example.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
I mean, superficial prayer is just you know, throwing up
a peace sign to God. Right, let me just pray
for my food really quick. Let me just like, all right, God,
could you just like help me out with my day?
And like it's just you're checking the box of prayer,
and really, what prayer is supposed to be is I
shared this story and mighty men one time where you know,
God continually speaks to me through my children, and I
(09:00):
was I was trying to get something through my daughter's
brain and something I do with her. And I don't
know where I learned this, right, And I don't remember
my parents, and maybe they probably did. I remember my
parents necessarily doing this with me. But I just I
tell when when Grace isn't listening, I say, hey, come here,
and I put my hands out open and she knows.
(09:20):
Now I don't have to tell her, but I'm telling her,
put your hands in my hands, because you know at
the age that she is it's easy to get distracted,
and you know, I'm talking to her and she's not
listening the way that I get her to listen to me.
So I tell her to put her hands in my
hands and then she'll look me in the eye and
I can speak to her. And the other day I
was doing that and I just felt like, you know,
(09:42):
God tapped me on the shoulder and said, I want
you to put your hands in my hands. Right, And
that's the best example I can give of what prayer
really is to where instead of just like you know,
sending God an email so to speak with your prayer,
that you spend time with him, that you got to
put your hands in his hands and listen.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Yeah, that to me, that what you said, that last
part is the key that you're listening. Because I think
superficial prayer is one way. It's where you're just gonna, like,
like what you said, You're gonna throw a few things
over your food or God blessed this day, and you're
kind of just like I'm gonna put this out there
into the universe in case it helps. Like it's that
kind of mindset because if you actually thought God was
gonna respond, you would stop and listen. Like if I said, Hey,
(10:19):
God's gonna speak to you, and like you're gonna you're
gonna hear very clearly, I would hope nobody'd be like, ah,
I'm good, I don't need that. But we operate that
way all the time. And prayer, I think the definition
of prayer is exchanging your ideas for God's. And so
there's not gonna be much of an exchange if you're
just sending it one way so very much, I mean,
practically for me what this looks like, just cause I
always want to give people practicals. There's certain songs that
(10:40):
I'll put on because they just help me to focus
my full attention in my mind on God. And I'll
sit there quietly, or I'll pray in tongues and I'll
just I'll just sit there and allow the Lord to
lead me. However, and I've you know, in a discipline
time I will put like, hey, I'm gonna sit here
for fifteen minutes, like I'll be almost meditative about it.
And some people might be like, well that's superscriptive. Well, honestly,
it's a discipline. How badly do you want to hear
(11:01):
from God? I want to hear from God.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
This is not a This is not a judgment, no
statement for anybody, but I hope it is maybe a
wake up call. If you're a person who you know,
claims to be a Christian and claims to be following God,
but you don't spend at least a few minutes of
day and intentional prayer, what what are you actually doing?
You're not. You're a guy who says he wants to
(11:25):
be a professional football player, but and you have the jersey,
and you got the posters on your wall, and you've
never been to the gym. You're not. You're not actually
putting any of the work. You're just as a man.
Uncle Rico would say, live in the dream, Live in
the dream.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Well, I think last thing on this Jesus would wake
up and go spend time in prayer in the morning,
and he was God like.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Because he was going to his father and he was
putting his hands in his hands.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Yeah. But and that's exactly my point. So like, you can't.
I just don't see how you can make any argument
against this.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
That.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
That was why I want to bring that up a
r G. Anything else do you want to go to
number two?
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Matt Matthew k Chapter six, verse seven says, and when
you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the
gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard
for their many words. And don't let your prayers be
puffed up emptiness. It's being Uncle Rico. It's being the
guy who spends all of his time researching and optimizing
(12:21):
a fitness plan but spends zero time exercising. Here's what
you need to do when you pray. You need to
spend time with the Lord. You need to give him
your attention and your focus, and you need to listen.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Yeah, very good.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Number two this is one that my father is huge on.
This is one of his messages. Again, these are seven
ways to waste your life. Number two is to never
plant your flag. The opposite of planting your flag is
being a nomad. Right, I just go from place to place.
(12:55):
I go from mission. That's not just geographical, but it
can be geographical. Right, I go from geographical place to place.
I go from purpose air quotes there, you know, purpose
to purpose. I go from thing to thing. You may
go from person to person in your relationships or even
in your marriages. Right, and you never plant your flag
(13:15):
in a place. And this is exactly what God called
Abraham out of because when God met Abram, he was
a nomad. And he says, I'm calling you to this place,
and this place is going to be your home for
good or for worse, right, for better or whatever situation
you get into. God saying this is going to be
your home. And what you've got to do in your
(13:36):
life is plant your flag on some very specific things.
My dad talks about this specifically as it relates to
a church, like choose a church that you're going to
call your home. It's not about you know, like a
church is not a gym, right, It's like, you know,
I used to go to this gym, but they really
let their equipment go. And the steam room used to
be nice. It's not nice anymore. I think I'm going
(13:57):
to cancel my membership. That's how a lot of people
talk about church. Again, this is not a shot at anybody.
It's just a different way of thinking. I was talking
to a guy yesterday at Mighty Man. He's brand new
and again, so if you're listening this, I'm not taking
a shot at you. This is just many people's view
of church. He said, you know, We've been going to
this church a lot because my kids really like the
kids ministry over there. And again, that's I don't think
(14:20):
that's why you should choose a church. You should choose
a church because of the people who are there and
who you want to call your family. Right. You know,
I'm not gonna if if church was just a gym membership.
You know what, when the equipment stopped working, I would
quit going to that gym, right, But that's not what
a church is. A church is a family. It's a
body of believers. It's not a set of facilities. It's
(14:42):
not the quality of the screens and the sound systems. Really,
the way that church should be is you should be
able to be at a church and say, you know what,
I don't like the word like there is different worship styles,
like people prefer different things and there's nothing super spiritual
about that. You should be able to be at a
church like, you know, I don't like the worship here,
and that's okay. I love the people that are here,
but a lot of people are like, oh I really
(15:03):
felt something in the worship there, so I like that place,
or I don't like this place. And again, how to
waste your life. Never plant your flag. I'm talking about
a church here, but you that's many other things. Getting
married is planting your flag. That's choosing covenant right, for
richer or for poor, for better or for worse. For
whatever I go through, Lindsay, is who I'm going to
(15:26):
be with for the rest of my life. Nothing is
going to change that. I've chosen to plant my flag there.
And so what you've got to do, as a man
or as a woman is begin to plant your flag
on specific things. Plant your flag as a church, plant
your flag with your spouse, plant your flag on your
family values. This is who we're going to be. Not
a nomad says this is a good place for now.
(15:48):
The grass is green here, right, But when the rain
goes away, you follow the rain. That's what nomads do.
Stop being a person who follows the rain. Yeah, and
I can.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
It's hard to really understand what happens when you decide
that you're not going anywhere, but you begin to think
so differently. I had this experience when we moved to Texas.
We've been in Texas now for five years, and we're
going to be here till we die, so I say
all the time, and It was the first time in
my life I moved here in my late thirties that
had ever been someplace that I had no intention of leaving.
Every other place i'd lived, I was like, well, you know,
(16:21):
this is good for now, and we knew like, hopefully
we can get to this next place and then that'll
be our forever home or whatever.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
I think a lot of people live that way.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Of course they're looking at any place and saying, oh,
I guess my season's up here, right right. They came
into it that way, looking at it seasonally. And what
you need to do is find a place that you
can plant your flag. And here's why purpose for your
life requires endurance. And if you set out on a
(16:50):
race to run and say, well, i'll run it for now,
what do you think your chances of finishing of finishing
that race? If you get into anything and say like, oh,
well I'll do it until I don't want to do
it anymore, right, good luck doing anything that matters with
that mindset.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Right, And I really, I really hope you grasped that,
because what's what's dawning on me as we're going through
this is all these things. So first one was superficial prayer,
which you know what's gonna keep you off that you're
gonna get distracted by good things? Oh, I gotta do
this for the kids. Actually, I told my wife I
do this. Oh, I really need to go quickly prepare
for the day. Oh, I forgot to take the track
like good things are gonna pop up. What's gonna keep
(17:24):
you from planting your flag? Well, you know, I really
just disagree with this, or we got a great job
offer over here, or actually these people want us to
come and do X. Whatever it is, it's always gonna
be something good, a good thing that's not necessarily a
God thing, that's going to take you off of all
of these things. And like I was saying for us,
I remember being very clearly sat on my back porch
and I felt like the Holy Spirit saying look out,
(17:45):
And I was looking out. I don't I have a
view of my neighbor's house. So it wasn't like I
was looking over. I'm not Abraham looking at like the
land and he's telling me every place you set your
foot is gonna be yours. It was just the Holy
Spirit was saying, you're gonna be here for twenty years,
for whatever reason, it was twenty years was the number,
and I don't know if that's accurate or if it
was just that's a long time in my mind. But
I was sitting there and I was just like going, okay,
so the way I'm going to deal with everything is
(18:06):
so much different because similar to what you said about
family of family, like you wouldn't sit there and go,
you know what, I've decided that I don't really like
my sister, so something a disowner, Like that's a why
that's a crazy thought process. People will put up with
a lot from their family, but with a church, it's like, yeah,
our kids, our kids prefer this. It's like it's like
me saying, you know what, I actually think this family
is better, or like if I like, for you, hey,
(18:26):
I met somebody who I think is gonna better on
the podcast, so like thanks for the four years, peace
out later, like and you know I'm waiting for that
day but really no, but no, but seriously, like that's
a crazy thought process, but that's how we behave in
these things. And then we're like, I don't know why
it doesn't work.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Well and okay, and so like I said, purpose, we
don't have to go forever long on this one. We'll
move on here a second. But purpose requires endurance, right,
It requires endurance to achieve purpose, And just like in
a marriage requires endurance. Okay, for I could go through
any of the different categories requires endurance. But here's the
point that I'm making. What does God really want for us?
(19:00):
He wants maturity. I want you to reach your full completion.
And what is James Chapter one tell us is the
path to maturity is endurance. Right, the hippomonae to stay
under the weight, and so seasonal mentality is really saying like,
I'll stay here until I don't like it. I'll stay
here until the juice isn't worth the squeeze, I'll stay
here until the weight gets too heavy. I'm here as
(19:22):
long as I like it. And that is not the
path to maturity one hundred percent. And we could keep
going on that with so many examples, but let's keep
going so number three, right, I hope these things are
hitting you square in the face. I hope these things
are reminders for you of because they are for me. Right,
every message that I share either here on the podcast
(19:45):
or in Mighty Men, I'm preaching to myself. These are
reminders for me, and so I hope that hopefully not
all seven of them, but I hope some of these
are a reminder for you of you know what, Yeah,
that's right, I need to lean into that. So number
three way to waste your life is play it safe.
You know, people, you know, there's this saying like, hey,
you should live a little, right, And I'm not petty,
(20:06):
so I don't ever. I don't like equip back to people.
But when people say like, hey, you should live a
little my internal response is I don't want a little life,
So no, thank you, right, Like, the number one way
to live a little life, guaranteed is to play it
small or to play it safe. You are going to
end up with regret in life if you make sure
(20:27):
like oh how do I how do I make sure
I'm gonna be okay? Uh? The mission of your life
is not to preserve it, but to spend it, and
to spend it properly. What are you going to use
your life for? Not to how do I make sure
I'm going to have enough for me? That is a
mentality of lack that will that will land you squarely
(20:48):
where you didn't want to be.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Yeah, yeah, I think about when we had Nate on
the podcast and he was talking about how he was
debating between whether to play Nate percult. This is an
early podcast. He was debating whether to play it safe
or to take this, like to take the jump and
become a ninja warrior. And he said that he left
the job in oil and gas industry became a ninja warrior,
and everybody's like, you're crazy, because all these guys would
would go and get their you know, twenty five year
(21:11):
retirement or whatever, get the watch and all the pension.
And then he said that the division that he was
a part of, the entire division got laid off three
years later, and so his decision to play it safe
was actually would have been the worst thing for m
because then he's been unemployed. Yeah, And I just always
struck me because play it safe is an illusion. It's
it's it's you like wanting certainty. And if there's anything
that we can admit as human beings, we're very bad
(21:32):
at predicting the future, and we're very bad at knowing
what's best for us, And so why would you think
that planet saves a good idea?
Speaker 1 (21:37):
And this is the parable of the talents. Yeah, Man, right, Matthew,
Chapter twenty five, Go go read it for yourself. This
is one that has always I've shared this message so
many times, and I've read reread it so many times,
and it continues to speak to me. But the parable
of the talents, right, it's a master and a steward. Right,
in this case, that's God and us, where the stewarts
(21:58):
and the master says, the Master is going away on
a long journey, and he brings in his servants or
his stewards, and allocates resources to them, by the way,
it says, in accordance with their ability. Right. The kingdom
God's kingdom is not a kingdom of equity. That's a
whole other podcast that we can talk about perhaps next time.
(22:19):
But he says, in accordance with their ability. And then
the Master comes back and he says, now, come and
give an account for what you've done, and that this
is our life. Come and give an account for what
you've done. And the first it's really not about it's
not about what you got to begin with based upon
your abilities. It's about what you did with what you've got.
But the first servant comes back and says, like the
(22:40):
first words from the servant is master. I was afraid,
so I took your talent and I buried it in
the ground. Here, take what's yours. And this is a
play at safe mentality. He was afraid of the Master,
he was afraid of losing it. He was afraid of
many things. And he says, I'm not willing to take
any risks, and he calls the Master, calls this servant
(23:01):
wicked and lazy. So I want you to hear this
for your own life. You know what playing it safe is,
Playing it safe with your life is wicked and lazy.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Now people won't think this, and we've talked about this before,
but like I think people play it safe with their kids, sure, right, Like, oh,
I don't want I got a bubble wrap my mind.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
I want to make sure my kids like me, so
I won't push on them too hard.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
Right, Or I want to make sure that they're they're
all safe and like so that they can't even be
in my front yard with out my eyes on it, and.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
It continually blows. I think back to how my parents
were with me. I was like, y'all believe in God. Way,
I got to work on my faith to prepare for
what's coming. With my children because y'all had so much
faith in God right to allow you to jump off
roofs of all the things that I did. Yeah yeah, yeah,
but praise the Lord here you are.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
But so like kids is one I think people will
play it safe obviously in finances, Like that's a very
big one. Like I, you know, I can't tie because really,
you know what I could get the compound interest return
on that, and like what if a bad day, Like
you know, there's all these loves to play it safe
in you know people, you know, where people play it
safe a lot. They won't realize people play it safe
in their physicality so much. One of the biggest things
(24:05):
that like when we were doing our ultra marathons, I
had so many people that'd be like, aren't you worried
about the long term impact of that on like your joints.
I'm like, no, I'm not. I'm not. That hasn't it
could like cross my mind at all. And I just
I thought it was so crazy that people.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
You spend all your time sitting around thinking about the
terrible things that could happen to you.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
Well, if you if you listen to certain podcasts or
read certain news outlets. It's like everything you touch is
going to kill you, and like the purpose of your
life is just to not have anything kill you. Right, Well,
you're gonna die that way too. So everything's toxic. Yeah, everything,
everything's toxic.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
The whole thing is gonna get you.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Yeah, well I got my ninety five mask. Anyways, shout
out to Fauci. Okay. So, but the point we're making,
man is it's like it's you play it safe. To
me is believing a lie. And like Garrett said, it's
wicked and lazy. So if you have and it boils
down to where your trust is, if your trust is
in yourself, you should hide everything and just hope it
nothing happens, because you know you're probably not gonna get
(24:59):
it right. But if your trust is in God, then
what that means is that you've only got to focus
on what he's given you to do, and he's going
to take care of the rest. He's going to fulfill
the plans and purposes for your life. He's going to
make things happen that could you could never make happen.
And when you're faithful to what he's given you. Now
it's like, man, the risk is not the risk, it's
just trusting God's nature because now you're not outcome focused.
I think people play it safe because the outcome is
(25:20):
what they're focused on. And if you're focused on just
being faithful, then it's like, okay, well, however this goes,
You're good God, and I'm going to go ahead and
just keep being obedient. So a lot we could say
on that gie.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
Number four, way to waste your life avoid excellence. To
Excellence is one of my personal core values. It's one
of the most valuable things to me. It's how I
add value wherever I go. Let me share a few
of my favorite quotes on excellence because some people, like
people have an idea of excellence, right, like you know
(25:52):
what good is, you know what bad is, but like
define good? Right, people know, like, okay, excellent excellence better
than good? What does that mean? So let me give
you some quotes, some thoughts on it that will help
define it. One of my favorites, Pastor Key says, excellence
isn't that much harder, It just takes longer, and that's
why so many people struggle with it. Booker T. Washington said,
excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way,
(26:17):
and that's why the Seal teams so good. The Seal
Teams TA literally talk about that, I'm a common man
on an uncomming I'm a common man on an uncommon mission. Right,
That's that's who I want to be. I want to
be excellent with my life. This is I mean, this
is Joseph. Who Joseph was. Joseph was so skilled in
his work. Says that Joseph was so excellent that the
(26:39):
master worried for nothing. Excellence is one of the master
keys in life that opens every door. Right, you don't
know how. You may not how I don't have the skill,
I don't have the resume, I'm the qualifications. Excellence unlocks
almost every door in life. And Rick Patino, you may
not know who. He is, only basketball coach to lead
(26:59):
three different schools to the Final four. He said, Excellence
is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of what
you have to offer.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Yeah, I remember we talked about that. Coach, you said,
let's be at excellent at all the things that don't
take any talent.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
Yeah, so get the rug weakend.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
Right, So if you're wondering what that looks like like, we're.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
Going We're going to get up off the ground really quickly. Yeah,
we're going to sprint to the ball as fast as
we can. Ye requires no talent. What's this look like
for you in your day to day life. You're not
going to wear wrinkley clothes. You're going to be on
time where you go, You're going to show up with
your your You're always going to have your hair done.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
You know. Like it's it's little things like oh, that
doesn't take any talent. No, it's details, That's really what
it is.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
A lot of people look at talent as an excuse
to not have to pursue excellence.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
Proverbs twenty two to nine says, do you see a
man skilled in his work, he will stand before kings.
He will not stand before obscure men. Daniel, chapter six,
verse three. Then Daniel became distinguished above all the other
high officials and sad traps because an excellent spirit was
in him, and the king plan to set him over
(28:02):
the whole kingdom.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Yeah. Man, I think about excellence. The lack of an
excellent attitude is it's not a big deal, right, It's
it's you don't realize what things are costing you not.
And I think this happens all the time. Napoleon Hill
talks about it as drifters, and I remember when I
read that, I screenshot it said to you, I was
like he was talking because you were the first person
that brought all this stuff up to me, when you
(28:23):
hammered me on like don't wear sweatpants, which I actually
wore sweatpants to your house a few times before that,
and you start talking about how you know there's a
reason why Garrett will go put on like I'll show
up to his house and he'll be wearing one thing,
and then before we go record, he'll go put on
another shirt. And I'm like, we're in your house, but
you're not thinking that way. You're like, no, this is
going to be on you know, YouTube and all sorts
of other places. And this is a presentation of myself.
(28:45):
What does that mean?
Speaker 1 (28:46):
That is a when I've met when I've picked up
my kids and I got a you know, a food
stain on the side of my shirt. I'm not I'm
not wearing that on the show.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
Correct, But but this is a larger review because you
know what I've noticed. So I work with a lot
of different companies as a marketer, and I you can
tell the caliber of person you're talking to on a
conference call before they even talk. Because I have certain
clients where there's a younger i'll say a largely younger,
more junior clientele. And you know how they show up
(29:12):
man hair just all over the place. They look like
they just woke up, and they're wearing like strappy tops
if they're girls or if they're guys, they have wrinkly
t shirts. And there's not one thing that you look
at and go, you know what, I bet you you're
on top of it.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
This isn't meant to be a commentary on this topic,
but because you bring it up, this is one of
the things that gen Z is well known for and
is popular for, which is like millennials are very much about, like, oh,
I have to follow the rules, I have to do
the things I have to put on a show. Gen
Z is popular for like the anti performance right right,
(29:46):
Like I'm not you know, like I can I'm wearing
whatever I want to work. I'm not going to do
my hair for you, right, like my my health, my
personal whatever.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
I fly on a plane on my pajamas.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
Yeah, yeah, don't do that. And while I'm very much
for or the thought process of like I'm gonna choose
what I choose because it's what I think is right.
It's all. It's also not a good thing to say, like, oh, well,
they want excellence out of me, I'm not gonna do
that right right the path you should do excellence because
(30:16):
it matters to you, not because your boss told you
to do it. But if you want to avoid excellence
in your life, you will waste your life because you'll
never produce anything of great value.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
Yeah, because it's a different mindset, like you have. You
have a price paying mindset because it's always going to
be inconvenient when you're getting ready to go out and
you realize, dang it, i've got a wrinkly shirt on, man,
that you're gonna cost yourself some time.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
Here, just as an example, Okay, some of the most
expensive cars, okay, like three hundred thousand, four hundred thousand,
half a million million dollar cars, the quality of their
paint job goes up with the value of the car. Now,
when you look at a million dollar car, that maybe
a seventy five thousand dollars one hundred thousand dollars paint
(30:57):
job on that car. That's a million dollar car. The
real value of the car is in the design, is
in the materials, is in the engine. But they didn't.
They didn't say, well, look, you know, I'm a hypercar.
I'm a Ferrari. I don't have to you know, I
have a rusted body. It doesn't matter. Look how fast
I can go, Look how fast I can I can
make turns. Look at my acceleration. No, the paint reflects
(31:20):
what's on the inside. What's on the outside of you
should reflect what's on the inside of you. Well said
g I've never heard you use that. That's a great analogy, man,
I just thought of it. I can tell it's good.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Well done. Look at you, man, you're making up stuff
on the go. I like it. What's number five?
Speaker 1 (31:35):
Number five? This is a big, big, one easy way
to waste your life. Allow addictions. One of my cure
for addictions is the Bob Newhart video from Comedy Central,
which you're the only person that knows this. By the way,
I don't think it's widely known. That's okay, Just YouTube
(31:57):
it right, google it. Bob Newhart, Come Central therapy session.
This is you know, it's five minutes of free therapy
and we can fix all of your problems and if
you haven't seen it, you just need to go watch it.
But essentially, Bob Newhart is a it's a it's a joke. Obviously,
it's on chemic Comedy Central. But a woman comes in
and like talks about all our problems and then he says, okay,
(32:19):
are are you? Are you ready for us to begin now?
And she said, She says okay, She pulls out her notebook.
He says, oh, I don't think you're gonna I don't
think you're gonna need that. This is just two words,
and she's looking at him. Okay. He says, this is
all you need to do. Stop it. It's genius.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Here's the thing about any addiction that you have in
your life, no one made you do it. You may
have a proclivity for it. There's there's a gene for alcohol,
there's a gene for addiction. I have every single one
of them in my genetic profile, and I see it
as a great strength. Right, I'm just going to get
addicted to the right things. No one makes me do anything.
(32:59):
And if you're listening to this podcast, it's the same
for you. No one makes you do anything. Some things
may be harder for you. You know what, the truth is,
for some people, it's harder to lose weighth some people
have thyroid issues, some people have metabolism issues, and you
know what, you're resting metabolic rate maybe only fifty or
(33:19):
sixty percent of what a normal person's is, and that's
not fair. But no one can defy the laws of thermodynamics.
You can't. You are incapable of defying the laws of thermodynamics.
You should. You know what, here's a positive for you.
Your body needs less calories to operate than somebody else's. Yeah,
you're not in, but you're well pular bearis consume a
(33:40):
ridiculous amount of it.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Well I was thinking of a hibernating bear. Whatever, let's
just keep going.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
But anyways, the point is right, don't look at anything
in your life and say like, oh, well it's harder
for me, so it's okay. No, it's not okay for anyone.
You know what, Yeah, maybe you come maybe your third
or fourth generation addiction in your family. Stop yeah, maybe
you're someone who's been addicted to porn for seven years.
(34:05):
Stop it. You get to choose, and you may think like, well, wow,
I thought this podcast was like, you know, like a
mindset podcast and and and you guys were going to
help us and and and tell me the things that
we need to do. Here's exactly what you need to do.
Take responsibility for your life. Stop allowing addictions to consume you.
Addiction requires a choice, right, and so whether you have
(34:28):
the genes for it or not, it's not an excuse
for you to not change. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
I don't think anyone ever looks at their life and says,
you know what I want to be. I want to
be a labrat that will like you can put little
stimuli in me and you can direct my entire life around.
But that's literally what you become.
Speaker 1 (34:43):
This is you know, we've talked about four words that
tell me you're weak, but here's another three words that
tell me that you're weak. This is what weakness sounds like.
This is what a lack of personal leadership sounds like.
I deserve this, yeah right. And a lot of people
look at their addiction and man not in a negative way,
look at a pipe well like I've you know, it's
(35:04):
been a hard day for me. So I deserve this,
yeah right. And that is the path to allowing things
to take over your life. You need to begin to
more than just stop it. What I hope you'll learn
on this podcast, maybe not in one episode, but maybe
in one hundred. One of the things you'll pick up
from this podcast is choosing to be intentional, having intent,
(35:24):
having a forward looking thought, and every single thing that
you do, so really looking at all of the food
choices you make, all the financial decisions you make, every
decision you make in your life, and say is this
serving me? Is this taking me in the direction that
I want to go? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Man, that's so good Because we talked about you mentioned
porn there, but things that people be addicted to is
certain types of foods, social media, your phone, like they're
like video games. The list goes on and on and on,
and like I said, you don't want to be the labrat,
but that like I remember when we went and fed
the homeless with Bring the Light Ministries here in Dallas,
(35:58):
g and we we went down and if you've not
fed homeless people, first of all, get out and do
it like it's just a great thing. I mean, Jesus
talked about it like when did when did we give
you a cup of cold water? When do we feed you?
I was you know, thirsty and you fed me. That's
I'm paraphrasing the scripture, but hopefully people know what I'm
referring to. It's a good thing to get out there
and do for a number of reasons. But I remember
when we went the first time, we went to like
(36:18):
the hardcore places in Dallas, and I remember we'd see
these people who were just out of their minds and
their needles and stuff like that were by them, and
I had this like this thought, I really felt this.
It was a supernatural thought of like, this is what,
to me, the devil's ultimate victory looks like, is that
he's taken God's greatest creation that was made in his
image and reduced them down to the level where all
(36:39):
they can do is think about when they're going to
get their next hit. Because there was a lot of
people that when even like we would just leave the
food for them and like kind of pray, and they
were not they were not with us in the same dimension,
and they were literally just right next to them, like
they didn't have anything else in their life, but they'd
figured out how to get drugs. And I just look
at that and I'm like, that's an extreme case and
a lot of people are like, well, I'm not like that. Yeah,
but you're you're on the path. Like I'm not saying
(36:59):
you're going to end up there, but like you don't
want to say. You know what, I'll take a little
bit of you know, I want you to make me
some brownies and you can mix it a.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
Little bit of it, do you. Yeah, whatever that spirit
is that's on those people, that's brought them to that place,
what percentage of that spirit is.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
Allowable in your life? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (37:13):
Ten, hopefully the answer is zero. And this Colossians chapter three,
verse five says, put to death. Therefore, whatever belongs to
your earthly nature, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil, desires, and greed,
which is idolatry, it says put to death. It doesn't
(37:33):
say hope and wait for it to be taken away
from you. It says put to death. And that that's
a violent that's a violent statement to put to death. Right.
When you put something to death, it's an intentional choice
and it's a permanent choice. You need to have that
mindset about how you deal with your addictions. Put them
to death.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
You have to really change the way you think about them.
Very good gen what's number six man number six. Uh,
this is a hard one, and this is one. This
is one of the the other one's easy. No, but
this is a sneaky one. This is one of the
things that people feel entitled to or feel like, you know,
this is kind of and I deserve this mentality as well.
But this is one of the ones that'll it'll hide
(38:11):
behind you and say and you'll think like I'm okay
and you're not.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
And this is to never forgive. Proverbs twenty eight, verse
thirteen says whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but
the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Right.
First thing that we need to do in our own lives,
and this is something that I do continually. I put
(38:36):
this out there all the time. I hope people don't
hear me flippantly or take this flippantly, because I think
it's one of the most important things that you can do.
And I start my days saying, God, forgive me, forgive
me and my sins. I want your way and not
my way. You've got to have a repentant heart and
every single thing that you're doing in your life, and
this is what will open up the door for you
(38:57):
to be able to forgive other people.
Speaker 2 (39:00):
Yeah, and this is a really common one for people.
I think because you have your reasons, like on anything
that we talk about, you're always going to have some
sort of thought process of why it's normal and natural,
Like you don't understand what they did, and it'll take
it's just a waste of energy. The best thing I've
heard of somebody says it's like setting yourself on to
not forgive. Somebody's like setting yourself on fire and helping
(39:20):
the other person dies from the smoke.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Inhalation, Romans six point twenty three says, the wages of
sin is death, but the free gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus. And right next to that
not in scripture, but I'm putting these scriptures together. Colostions,
chapter three, verse thirteen. Bear with each other and forgive
one another. If any of you has a grievance against someone,
(39:45):
forgive is the Lord forgave you. God forgave us for
sins punishable by death. And what I've got to do
is when I receive that forgiveness, this is revelation. This
is a part of the sanctification and transformation. Process in
your life. If you think you're a good person, why
would you think that you need God? And listen to
(40:05):
any atheist person, they're like, I was watching this video
yesterday of this woman in a demonic tirade saying like,
why don't you just be good? Just be a good person.
This is obviously not a good person, and none of
us are good people. But if you think you're good,
why would you think you need God? When you realize
(40:25):
that you actually are depraved and have sin in your life,
and you receive the mercy of God and you receive
not just God's forgiveness, but you receive the new heart
that comes from Christ, and you realize what He's done
for us that gives you the ability to forgive other people.
We serve a great God and eternal God who sent
(40:48):
his son to die for our mistakes, for our sins regardless.
You know, God could have just said, you know what,
forget all, y'all, I'll just start over, right, But it
says for God so loved that he gave, And that's
exactly when when you receive that love, you're able to
turn and do the same thing.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
Yeah, and where I think people will struggle with this
is not just in forgiving other people. And look, there's
a supernatural release when you truly walk in forgiveness. You
can feel that in your I don't know how I
would touch I'm touching right now, like where my uh,
just below my heart and right where like in my breastbone.
You feel like a release in that part of you,
(41:26):
which I think is like your spirit soul, Like you
release the tightness that you've been carrying. But where a
lot of people struggle to forgive is themselves. And the
reason for that is because they a know what they've done,
like unlike anybody else, and they'll know the motives and
all that sort of stuff, and b we have this
concept of forgiveness that is really hard to get past.
And our forgiveness is I can forgive them if they
(41:46):
do a certain thing like I you know, hey, like
when we ask forgiveness for sins, like if you said
a bad word because you don't think it's that bad,
you're like, oh you kind of you don't sit there
and focus on it all day, You're like, oh, whatever,
you know, it's slipped. It happens right. And then but
like let's say you did something bad, you murdered somebody
or you did whatever you think the worst sin is.
You might sit there and beat yourself up for that
for years because you understand that there's a greater pentance
(42:10):
that has to be paid to make that. The breakthrough
will come when you realize there's nothing you can do
for anything, from the smallest sin that you've committed in
your own mind to quote unquote the biggest sin in
your mind, it's all covered by the blood of Christ.
And I know you might be going, okay, Nick, this
is really obvious, but there's a difference between knowing the
path and walking the path. And when you've sat there
and you've had a true revelation that there's nothing you
(42:30):
can do and that God has forgiven you one hundred
percent from his place of saying, you know what, I'm
the only one that could do this, and I already
covered it. It is forgiveness is so powerful, and this
is the place where you come to the foot of
the cross, like what Garrett said, and realize that there's
nothing you can do and that you don't have any
good in you. But man, it's such a revelation of
how great God's love is for you. When you realize
you know what it was forgiven, not because I have
(42:52):
to do X, Y and Z now or I'm gonna
make up for it by having a good life. The
rest of the time, it's just done. It is final.
And that is the mystery of the Cross that you
can spend your entire life trying to comprehend. And it
still baffles me.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
If you hold unforgiveness in your heart, it'll poison you. Right.
So number six way to waste your life, never forgive? Yeah,
so good. And lastly, number seven how to waste your
life never transform. The purpose of our lives is to
glorify God, and the meaning of your life is how
(43:24):
you spend it. There's only one thing you can spend
your life on that will mean anything in eternity. And
there's a way to spend yourself that will multiply your gift,
that will do more than you ever could, that will
turn your rags into riches, and that is to truly
be transformed. And this is I'm going to share the
scripture that I share every week at Mighty Men. Romans,
(43:45):
Chapter twelve, Verse one and two. Paul says, I'm pleading
with you offer your bodies as a living sacrifice. This
is worship that's holy and pleasing to God. And I'm
going to highlight the thing that I highlight nearly every Saturday,
and that's this, truly what holiness is. Right, He's saying,
(44:05):
if you'll offer your body as a living sacrifice, this
is worship that's holy. Paul's not saying to kill yourself.
He's saying to take the flesh way of living and
put it on the altar. And the flesh way of
living is something that we're all born into. It's the
sin life that we're born into. Right, it's following our flesh,
it's following our desires, it's following our urges and our impulses.
(44:28):
And Paul says, take this way of life and put
it on the altar. This is worship that's holy. And
holy just means to be used rightly. Right. God has
a design for you, and when you follow it, that's holiness.
A hammer is designed to strike a nail, and when
a hammer strikes a nail, that's holiness. And if a
hammer has never struck a nail, what a waste of
(44:50):
that hammer? And that hammer will anything else that you
use a hammer for is going to feel odd. And
that's exactly what happens in a man's life if he
never transformed. Right, God created you for so much more
than following your flesh. And if you don't walk this path,
you'll be as a man. You'll be like a hammer
that's never hit a nail. But verse two, Roman, Chapter twelve,
(45:10):
Verse two says, don't be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you
will understand God's will for your life, which is perfect
and pleasing. It says, don't be conformed, but be transformed.
Transformed is the Greek word metamorphou, like the English word metamorphosis,
(45:31):
which is which metamorphosis is the caterpillar turning into the butterfly.
A butterfly is not a caterpillar with wings. A butterfly
dies completely. It liquifies inside of the cocoon and comes
out something else entirely. And that's exactly what God has
for every single man and for every single woman. If
you'll follow him, if you'll give up your life to
(45:53):
follow him, if you'll lay your flesh way of thinking
on the altar, God will change your thinking, which is
a true transfer. Man. More than listening to this podcast,
more than going to the gym. More than reading books,
more than any level of personal growth and development can do.
God does something in your life. God does something in
your spirit that no other process on this earth can do.
(46:14):
And that's the great power of transformation. And the promise
that follows it is then You'll see God's will which
is perfect and pleasing. And I know every single person
listening to this podcast wants to know God, what is
your plans for me? God, what is your purpose for me?
And if you want to understand God's purpose for your life,
there's a very simple formula in Romans chapter twelve, Verse
one and two. Stop following your flesh. Let God change
(46:37):
your thinking. He'll transform you and show you why you
were made so good, Gee, so good.
Speaker 2 (46:43):
You're talking about the power, the redemptive work of the
power of the Holy Spirit, which if you don't have
the if the Holy Spirit is not involved, then like
you said, this becomes a nice personal improvement plan. Like
I've got some scriptures that I lean on, and I've
got some favorite mantras and mottos, and you're lacking the
power to truly change life. I listen to you say
this every single week that the biggest miracle that we
see on a day to day basis is a transform life.
(47:05):
And nothing speaks louder than that. So if you want
to waste your life, we've given you seven great ways
to do it, and I would go ahead and say,
do the exact opposite of all of those. Gee, anything
you want to leave the people with, do not do
these things. Yeah, do not do any of those seven things.
But understand that the temptation to do all those things
is always there. Because why they sound a lot of
the things that will lead you to those distractions are
(47:27):
pleasing for the moment they sound fun. You know they
have good reasons, and they might even be sometimes good
things that aren't God things. But if you can understand
what's coming against you and know your enemy right like,
you're gonna be in a lot better place.
Speaker 1 (47:40):
Don't waste your life.
