(00:40):
Love the Savings. I'm John Ellisalong with my Compatra, my partner
in crime for four years running downmy friend Richmond Weaver. Let's do this.
It's Season four of the Engles TailgateShow. Season four and season of
hope for all of college football fansas a new season is amongst us right
now and everybody is excited, notonly just for obviously Clemson football, but

(01:03):
for just college football in general. It's back. So here we are,
and we're back for year number four. For the Ingles Tailgate Show, and
very excited that we can kick offthis twenty twenty three season right here at
Camperdown Plaza. So anybody out there, come on down. It is a
beautiful day. Obviously a lot herein the Upstate that we are in shade.
They'd have a great set up righthere. We're under a tent,

(01:25):
but there's also a lot of shadehere at Camperdown Plaza, So make sure
you come on down here and checkus out, as we will get things
going. Little Clemson football to talkabout, and a lot of action,
just craziness in college football in general. And rich I'd be remiss if I
didn't mention the fact that you're thehost of the Richmond Weavers Show three pm
weekdays on Fox Sports Upstate. Yes, sir, follow our years truly on

(01:46):
game on four pm. We havea great light up there on Fox Sports
Upstate. The I Heart Radio family. And how many times have we talked
about it? You and I've beendoing radio for four years now. Oh
the duldrums of the summer months andwhen are we going to get here?
And it's hard to believe it's LaborDay's Stember fourth and we're finally here we
gotta get you get it all ingear now is we've got a huge show
with a lot to get to here, but just your feelings on the fact

(02:07):
that, man, the weight wasso excruciating as always, but we made
it jem Pact show as always, and yes, the weight that we have
throughout the last several months, andobviously as you get into summer and it
gets amped up when you start havingtalking season and then it's fall camp and
then still waiting and for Clemson, faithful, right now it's still the waiting

(02:30):
game. I mean, there's teamsout there right now that are already sitting
at two and oh or one andone oh and two. It's right now
that have already played two games beforethe Tigers kick off tonight at eight o'clock
in Durham against the Duke Blue Devils. Well, it's a big year for
Clemson. We're going to dive intothat momentarily. We also want to remind
you that Melissa Level, the directorof advertising and marketing for Ingles, will

(02:51):
stop by here shortly and give usher sense. She's a little excited today.
If you don't know, Richmond, she's a big four just a little
bit. Yes, they had ahell of a second half there against LSU.
We're gonna talk about all of thatcoming up next in our top twenty
five report ACC Headlines. I mean, look, it's been a good start
for the ACC, let's face it, especially against the SEC, some big
time wins, including the aforementioned FloridaState. We got another big one tonight

(03:14):
with a couple of ACC teams tanglingon a Labor Day night, joining us
behind enemy lines later in the fourPM hour. David Shoemate guy, you
know well, he is the directorbroadcasting for the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network
calls the games for the Blue Devils, and he'll stop buying. Give us
his examination, if you will,on what Duke is all about. Give
us a real bird's eye view onwhat to expect from this very good Duke

(03:36):
team. As we talk about expectationsfor the Clipson Tigers here in twenty twenty
three, what about the Duke BlueDevils. You're talking about a lot of
expectations coming off of a nine winseason. Knowing that Mike Elko did a
fantastic job, winning ACC Coach ofthe Year last year for his improvement from
Duke in twenty twenty one to twentytwenty two is remarkable, and Duke has

(03:59):
a low roster in terms of talentrelative to what we've seen in the past
with Dukes. So I'm not sayingthat Duke has a roster that's equivalent to
Clemson, not to Ohio State,or to Florida State or did Georgia or
anything like that. But we areseeing a lot of improvement from Duke standpoint,
and knowing that they basically have ninetyeight percent of their production coming back

(04:21):
from last year. And John, you know how key veterans are on a
team. Oh, it's everything. They've got a great offensive line, a
couple studs there left tackle and center, and of course you got the quarterback
that can really throw the pill. We're gonna talk much more about that with
David Shumey coming up in the fourPM hour, But let's take a look
back at what happened last year.Clemson fans, you know, it was

(04:42):
a look tough season, to saythe least at the very end, no
doubt. The big I think turningpoint in this season was what happened in
Notre Dame. And obviously this teamstarted up very hot on defense. Dju
who had a great game by theway at Oregon State grads to him and
had tipped to him. But theseason was interesting, Rich there were a
lot of expectations. Early just seemedlike the offense never got clicking in the

(05:05):
right direction and through Gared Riley. Now, but last season certainly a roller
coaster. Photigraphans Oh, it definitelywas. And you look at that Notre
Dame game, Yes, and obviouslyyou can pinpoint that loss there thirty five
to fourteen, which was the worstloss of the season from a scoring perspective.
A lot of people want to focuson the Tennessee game and because that's

(05:26):
the closer, and Clemson didn't winthe closer, losing thirty one to fourteen,
And as much as we can pinpoint, yes, that was somewhat of
the turning point for the season forthe Tigers. I actually want to rewind
it just a little bit more.I think it's the Syracuse game and that's
the victory that Clemson had. Butthe Tigers were trailing twenty one to ten
in that game, and that wasthe game where it seemed that dj ue

(05:50):
Unglay lost his confidence and just wasnot able to gather himself and Kaid Klubnik
had to come in and in essencerescue the Tigers for them to be able
to get that victory against Syracusan howmany times we actually talked about it last
season, John for whatever reason,do you know, Baber, since Ayracuse
they give Clemson a hard time theyhave for years, they have for years,

(06:12):
and Clemson had all they could handlein that game, and Tigers were
very fortunate that it was at homeand they were able to get that victory.
But it never seemed to then beable to gain momentum after that,
because then it's the follow up lossto Notre Dame and then obviously we know
how things ended out at home againstSouth Carolina, losing a heartbreaker there,

(06:33):
and obviously a great performance against NorthCarolina to win the ACC championship, but
you also had a scenario you lostfour out of your last six games once
you lost to Tennessee there, andthat's the first time that that's happened for
the Tigers since twenty eleven. Andso there's a lot of disappointment in Tiger

(06:54):
fans and even in the players andthe coaching staff as far as how that
season ended out. But it's interestinglyenough talking with some of the players.
They seemed that that was not somuch as a disappointment, and then that
was woe is me. Heading intothe offseason, it was okay, it's
time to regroup, and we sawthat Dabo Sweeney making some changes also,

(07:16):
changes were made, no doubt aboutit. We're going to talk about some
of those offensive changes with the newoffensive coordinator, Garrett Riley. My goodness,
things are going to look a lotdifferent around here offensively with this attack
that comes from TCU, and againit's going to be sort of the air
raid, but with a power elementto it that will make it a little
bit of a different vibe. Ofcourse, TCU last year they ran the
ball effectively, so it's gonna bea little bit of what you saw last

(07:40):
year from coach Dyke's out there, and as Dabo likes to coin the phrase,
it's going to be the dirt raid. They're gonna run the ball because
obviously Clemson has a plethora of runningbacks when you look at the speed wheel
Shipley and the power of Phil MafA, so yes, Tigers are still going
to run the ball. And toyour point, it's not a far stretch

(08:01):
for Garrett Riley because that's what helikes doing. Also is running the ball
well and then enter k Clubnic.I mean, this is a big year
for him right now. Obviously there'sa lot of talk about where this offense
can go with him, and wesaw last year and that ACC Championship.
He comes into the game the thirdseries, I believe, and puts up
a twenty to twenty four completion toattempt ratio kind of game, two hundred

(08:26):
and sixty eight yards passing, getsome stuff done on the ground. He's
a dynamic player, he can movearound a little bit. I know the
Tennessee game there were some moments therehe'd like to have back, but that
ACC Championship was a big step inthe right direction in terms of I guess
something we talked about last year, with all due respect to Dju having that
spark in the passing game, heprovided some of that. There's something about
energy and you can feed off ofit in a positive way or a negative

(08:50):
way. And we saw just howKate Clubnet came in and he was that
energy guy. And yes, obviouslyhe's a young guy. So in that
Tennessee game, maybe there's some thingsto learn from and be able to work
on those in the off season, but it seemed that throughout the season even
when the Tigers, you finish eightno in the ACC undefeated, you win

(09:11):
the ACC Championship, you win elevengames. So there is a lot of
positives. But I would say froma perspective for Tiger fans just looking at
it through the lens of other teamsthat Tigers have followed over the years.
When you see it Deshaun Watson leadteam, when you see a Trevor Lawrence
led team, a taj Boyd ledteam, the offense made it look easy

(09:33):
at times, and it just seemedlast year it just seems it just seemed
hard at times that it was youknow, you didn't have that type of
energy that you could see with theother teams in the past. And a
lot of it it's not just basedon dj Ue Unglay. A lot of
it has to do with supporting cast. Injuries played a role in so many

(09:54):
different things, So you have allof those factors that go into it.
But you could see the positive flashes. Kate Club again, what the future
might bring. Yeah, no doubtabout a big time game tonight. The
kickoff is at eight pm. WallaceWade stadium. Interesting first glance, this
dude crowd. Look, they're gonnabe fired up, They're gonna be excited,
And I think it's a good teston the road for Clemson to see

(10:16):
where they stand right now, tokind of get a gauge on our right
you know what, how close arewe to breaking back into college football supremacy,
which would be playoff contention. Thisis a good first example of a
nine win team last year, ateam that owns a lot of good things
going on in terms of the quarterback, Riley Leonard and of course the reigning
ACC Coach of the Year. AndI encourage fans to embrace these type of

(10:39):
games at the opening of the collegefootball season rather than some of the games
that we saw this past weekend. When you see in Oklahoma beat Arkansas State
seventy seventy three to nothing. Yousee Oregon put up eighty one points on
Portland State. Is that fun forScott? Was tired? A lot of

(11:01):
push up there? Yeah? Butyes, I mean, obviously your team
wins, but just think about watchingthat game last night between LSU and FSU.
That's a way to start a seasonright there. That's exciting because we
see that in the NFL. Wesee those type of matchups week one in
the NFL, So let's embrace theopportunity of seeing some of those matchups in

(11:22):
college football. And I think wewill be moving more towards that once the
playoffs are expanded next year, goingto twelve teams, because it might not
hurt you as bad if you loseearly in the season. And as much
as that loss for LSU last night, getting really throttled by Florida stay,
especially there in that second half, who's to say they can't run the table

(11:46):
and still get into the college footballplayoff with one loss. Yeah, no
doubt about. It's a long season. It'll be a long season for LSU
in terms of getting back on track, a long season for Clemson as they
get it started tonight against Duke. You can hear all the action right here
on ninety two point five WSC DonMon and Reggie Merriweather and Tim Borey on
the call. Coming up next,we're gonna be joined by our good friend
Melissa Level from Ingles. He's gonnastop by and give us, well,

(12:07):
let's just say, her perspective ona certain team that had a good night
last night as well. As allthat Ingles is doing in your community right
now. This is the Engles TailgateShow. That's Richmond Weaver. I'm John
Ellis. We're back with much moreright after this on ninety two point five
WSC. This is the Engles TailgateShow on ninety two point five w E

(12:28):
s C. Now comeing to youlive from Camperdown Plaza, beautiful Brengle,
South Carolina, right outside a grouptherapy. It is the Ingles Tailgate Show,

(12:50):
coming to you live in color hereon ninety two point five w E
s C. Of course, youcan listen to us on the iHeart Radio
app and catch all the action forthe rest of the day leading up to
kick Golf at eight pm with DonMunson, Tim Murray and of course Reggie
Merryweather on the call on the ClemsonAthletic Network. Here it all right here
on ninety two point five w ESC. Joining us now is a Florida
State fanatic. First of a littlebit of fanatic. I mean I could,

(13:13):
I could I do moot for Clemsonevery other time that must we're playing
each other. It's the director ofadvertising for Ingles Markets, Melissa Level,
back in the house for another season. Season four of the Sea, and
look at this place. This isthe van and I love it. You
can hear us. You've got thespeaker going. It's wonderful. We got
a great crowd already, come downand see us scamper down plaza. That's

(13:35):
right down here, that's right.I mean, the action is definitely down
here downtown and obvious I've met athousand different things to do and even waving
to some people up on their backany high. And we do have shade
here, yes we do. That'shot out here, and I'm going to
tell you it is hot, butI will say that as temperature is going
to go down as we go on. It's supposed to be at the by

(13:56):
game time in the in the highseventies. So let me begin fantastic college
football weather. Yeah, it issort of alder that's right. Yeah,
I'm looking forward to them. Igotta start with your reaction last night.
There's no secret you've been on thisshow many times. You're a huge Florida
State fan alum. And what comesto mind when you think of this team
putting it on LSU last night inthe second half? Legit, legit,

(14:18):
But I mean, I mean Isaw some things last night that were a
little bit concerning in the first half. But I think I've talked to both
you and Ridge before and said, listen, I'm just really upset and worried
about the hype, okay, AndI think that that effected when you have
a crowd so loud that things areactually falling on the press box inside.
Yes, okay, and you've beentold, and they also responding to Kelly's
going We're gonna beat the heck outof them, right, Okay, everybody

(14:41):
came out a little bit heavy onthe you know, hyped up side,
a little bit not as good decisionmaking process as I thought. Jordan made
some passes that weren't necessarily great.Wilson had some drops but are But I'll
tell you what, those goal linedefenses were incredible. So just memboring back
Melissa to that opening series. Rawas lsu six times inside the five yard

(15:07):
line and Floris stops four times. They were at the one yard line on
that first series, And I texteda group that I'm on with a couple
of buddies and said, I'm readingit right here, said the Knowles will
be a problem this year. Yeah, there'll be a problems. They are
loaded, and I know Mike Norvilleis getting a little bit of heat for
going to the transfer portal, butthis is the era can use it better

(15:28):
than anybody else, I think sofar. Look at Coleman last night,
and I mean John Wilson, there'snot many teams in the country that have
wide receivers. Jared Verse on thedefensive line, absolutely a guy who can
demolish the opposing offensive line and createsome havoc. And then Jordan Travis,
Oh yeah, five touchdowns. Yeah, I mean I think that he had

(15:50):
to calm down too. I mean, I really do. I think there
was it and you had you sawall on the sideline several times. Thing
thing think you I was even doingthat little thing with his head right when
Verse came off, because he almosthad that call that would have really probably
ended the game for us at thatpoint, so I think. But then
second half they blew me away.I never expected them, and I am
a huge nose to win by thatmuch. And I really hated the fact

(16:12):
that we had We just didn't keepeverybody in so they didn't score that must.
But I do have to say,but you know what I mean,
you know what I loved what thecommentator said, we missed you, Florida
State, we missed you and Iand I think it does better for everybody,
for Clemson, for NC State, for all of the acc for Florida

(16:32):
State to be a good team.I've been saying it for years. College
football is better when the usual suspects, when the blue bloods of college football
are still at the top of theirgame. A Florida State needs to be
in the mix. It's a nationalspotlight. It helps college football overall.
And there's not more of a blueblood than Clemson and Florida State playing each
other coming up soon. That'll bea very good game. YEA. Clemson

(16:55):
faithful was very excited that at leastit's in Death Valley, right, it's
in death. I mean, I'mnot saying, you know, I mean,
I think that's one of those thingsthat you you know what it's,
that's one of those rivalries that's kindof friendly at the same time, but
it's it's it's a tough reverie becauseboth coaches really respect each other and and
I know Daba really respected Bobby Bowden, you know, and so I think
there's a there's a classy rivalry betweenthe two of them. Well, four

(17:18):
is the big number today. Thisis year four of our partnership with Ingles
and the Clemson Athletic Network. Ofcourse you get the Tiger Tailgate show coming
up later on, but just talkabout how it's been for you, Melissa,
a football fan first, but alsomarketing gurus right there with everybody else
out there. What this relationship hasmeant to you, dealing with the Clemson
Athletic Network, dealing with Clemson footballand Ingles all hand in hand. Well,

(17:40):
you know, I mean, thereisn't a greater fan base in our
region where we are. I putup in our region because you know,
they're then Clemson. You know, they're extremely loyal fans and they're not fair
weather. You see some of thesefair weather fans. I love my job
and I'm a huge fan. Andthere's nothing bigger than sports marketing realm all
right, And and people don't realizethat it hits you as a purpose driven

(18:04):
marketer in a place that leaves anindelible mark. Okay, you will have
people that will drive miles and milesout of the way because you support their
home team, whether it be highschool or college or their NFL team,
whatever it might be. And thisyear we've got some great relationships coming up
with Clemson. Obviously the Engles TigerTailgate show. Some great sponsors joining the
team this year, so we havesome fun things happening on game day on

(18:27):
our show beforehand where we were sponsorsof the Asheville Classic, which is gonna
be really wonderful. We come somebasketball coming to the Ashville. Everybody.
Hey, we're less than sixty daysfrom college basketball football, right and you
know what, it's going to bea great intern You're just up the mountain.
We're we're gonna have a party busput together for with us, so

(18:47):
we'll be able to get everybody upthere in the fans. Kids will still
be school, so you'll be ableto Really we're gonnapack those arenas with those
Clemson because you've got Davidson UAB Maryland. I think that's it. Yeah,
you and in Maryland it's two daysfriendance Sunday. Get your tickets now.
It's gonna be a great opportunity. We'll got to ask you about one of
your former players, Dean Sanders downat Florida State stunner of the weekend,

(19:08):
putting it on TC your thoughts watchingthat a little bit. Well, you
know, for your years you've heardme say we really wanted me on to
VR coach at Florida State. Right, never's gonna out of you know.
I'm very happy with our coach, and it was exactly what we needed at
the time. And sometimes things aredone an unusual circumstances. So I'm glad
it worked death the way. ButI never doubted in my mind, and

(19:29):
I loved that site with him andhis son. Oh gosh, right at
the beginning with it, It's unbelievable, you know. I mean, it's
never going to be boring in Coloradefootball. I'm going to just tell you
coach prime praise prime de Sanders isgood for college football, That's right,
And you know the parody is goodin all of the league. I just
love it. I mean, Iknow we've got a lot of things moving

(19:51):
around and shifting around and teams movinghere and there. You know, I
saw a couple of commercials at nightthat kind of last night that kind of
hit on that whole you know,n I l and all that stuff.
But I will say something really coolabout Anil. I know that you and
I talked about this Rigmond. ButJordan Travis signed an NIL deal with Beats,
and instead of just having them, you know, just give him the
money, he went out and hadthem send every single team member, coach,

(20:14):
even the janitor a set of beats. That's how you do an I
L. We don't divide the lockerroom, right, you don't separate from
the fan, right, and Iyou know, that's a classy way to
do it. So if we couldget back to us doing that kind of
thing with an IL and and thatkind of purpose that was supposed to be
an original, I think be good. Well, we can't thank you enough
and Engles enough for this partnership yearfour. Now we're going into the Tailgate

(20:37):
Show, the Engles Talegate Show, and with all you do, thank you
so much. I can't I can'timagine college football with about you guys.
Well, well, thank you andobviously thank you for even all the stuff
you do on the other side ofthe iHeart Family with one four nine sister
station. And isn't that incredible yourshows, you're doing so wonderful. I
love listening to all of you.I mean, I just rolls right in.

(20:59):
I Good is fantastic. Two verydifferent shows but a lot of fun
to listen to the idea Melissa level. Thank you advertising for Ingles markets.
Don't forget to go to Engles dashmarkets dot com. Find out all the
great stuff Engles is doing your communityand go into Engles get everything in for
your tailgate today. Wipe that Inglesadvantage, car Melissa, I'm telling you
it's college football fuel. Let metell you it's college football fuel is bliss.

(21:21):
The level fueling us up here fromIngles, we appreciate your time.
Coming up next Top twenty five headlines. Oh we got a few of them,
Richmond. Oh yes, oh wegot a few of them. And
then acc around the conference. Whathappened this weekend. We'll get you up
to speed on that and much muchmore. It's the Engles Tailgate Show live
from Camperdown Plaza on ninety two pointfive w e SC. This is the

(21:41):
Engles Tailgate Show on ninety two pointfive w E s C. Here from
a beautiful setting downtown Green Will,Camperdown Plastic It's the Ingles town Gate Show.
As we roll on on ninety twopoint five w E s C.

(22:03):
Get your prime You're ready for abig season opener tonight A Labor Day opener
for Clemson and Duke, a uniquematchup. We're going to dive into the
minutia of this game, some ofthe matchups in the next hour. We're
joined by David Shoemate, of course, later in this four PM hour,
coming up, the play by playvoice of the Duke Blue Devils. It's
going to be a treat to catchup with him. Might even get a

(22:23):
few basketball questions in with David.Look a couple questions about his experiences with
coach kat Richmond. I know you'rethe basketball game. What's the count?
That again? How many days now? We're less than sixty days? Yes,
or actually I think it's might technicallybe sixty two days. That's how
close it is. Not too faraway at all. We are brought to

(22:45):
you, of course by Ingles LowPrices, Love the savings Ingles Dash Markets
dot Com. As we spend youthrough what happened in the top twenty five
this weekend, well what didn't happen. I mean, look, let's start
with the very top of the listhere. Of course, Georgia was going
to take care of you, tMartin. We walked about earlier in the
show. Some of these teams thattake on teams that are much lesser in
terms of talent, and Georgia wouldtypically be one of those teams. They

(23:07):
took care of business there Michigan withJJ McCarthy coming out with the free Harball
shirt. They have no Jim Harballon the sidelines, but for three games,
yes, three games, but Iwould say out of the Big Ten,
and we'll get to more of theseteams, Probably one of the more
impressive showings was Michigan because the BigTen had a bit of an up and
down weekend. Well, we sawOhio State struggle a little bit in terms

(23:27):
of expectations, and again, playingsome of these teams early in the season,
you would think Ohio State now obviouslythey're replacing CJ. Stroud at quarterback,
so there's question marks there, andI think a lot of teams are
in that scenario of how their offenseis going to look based on new quarterback
play. And we can even lookat Georgia with Carson Beck taking over obviously

(23:48):
for Stetson Bennett, two time nationalchampion Stetson Bennett and now backup quarterback for
the LA Rams, and so thereis some things that are happening. But
even like Wisconsin with Luke Fickle takingover there at Wisconsin. You know,
I was under the impression that theywould come out and just ground and pound
like they normally do against Buffalo andbe able to win easily. But they

(24:11):
weren't able to do that. Now, they did win relatively easy, but
it didn't happen until the second halfof that game, and so a little
sluggish for some of these teams. And I think this is just par for
the course for how with college football, and I've said it all along and
even with other sports, and evenNFL, you have to be even kill

(24:32):
don't get too high, don't gettoo low off of the first game.
There's a lot of football left tobe played. And obviously we can even
pinpoint to looking at the Florida StateLSU game, which we've talked about quite
a bit here already. But isLSU that bad and as Florida State that
good? It's too hard to telljust based off of one game, but
the eyeball test does say that atleast Florida State might be matching up what

(24:55):
we see on paper as far asout on the field. But a lot
of football left for some of theseteams. So even the Big Ten teams
don't necessarily have to be too concernedat this moment. No, I wouldn't
panic if I'm anybody right now,but certainly, you know, McCord the
new quarterback for Ohio State, he'sgot a little work to do. Had
a couple of bad throws there inthat game. Indiana. Give them credit,
they came in firing on all cylindersdefensively. Twenty three to three was

(25:18):
the final of that game. Sothat is a road game too. So
remember that these are eighteen, nineteentwenty year old student athletes, as we
would call them out there, andsometimes you just don't know how things are
going to progress. At that firstgame, and it was one hundred degrees
everywhere in the country this weekend. To keep in mind that defense is retired,

(25:40):
offenses retired. You know, wesaw Alabama, of course number four
in the country, get by MiddleTennessee State by the narrow margin of fifty
six to seven. Of course,Milroad takes over a quarterback and has a
nice game three touchdowns. Yeah, another new quarterback, Yes, and Nick
Saban all his national championships he's beenable to win with at one point a
first year quarterback, So who's tosay that Alabama can't be right back in

(26:03):
the national championship picture again, Oh, you'd certainly think so with the way
they're trending right now. And youknow, you look, there's some games
that we're going to continue to talkabout throughout this entire country that happened,
and there's so many vital games thatwe got to look at. But what
a story it was down there inford Worth with what happened with Deon Sanders
team in Colorado, a team thatyou know, I don't think a lot

(26:25):
of us knew what to make.We some of us had some hot takes,
some hotter than others about well, either Deon's gonna light the world on
fire or it's just going to bea disaster. We've got Carlos calling in
every day on our shows, theRichmond Weaver Show on Fox Sports up Stable
one of four nine and then GameOn with myself and Trey Falco there four
to six pm on that same station, and we've got just a laundry list
of different opinions on what it wouldbe. I don't think anybody predicted the

(26:48):
number one. They would go downthere and control the line of scrimmage like
they did with that offensive line. That's got a lot of new pieces of
Number two and I know it's TCUsdefense. I guess they beat Michigan last
year in the College Football Playoff,So keep that in mind. Number two
Shodoor Sanders throwing five hundred yards inthat game. I didn't see that coming.
I'm sorry nobody did. And heprobably could have thrown for almost six

(27:10):
hundred and fifty yards if there's acouple of go routes that were dropped.
So you could see that Sanders cameout there and played lights out in his
first time as playing at the Powerfive level there. And as much as
we do want to focus on thetransfer portal and how Dion is building this
team and all of that, youhad to give him credit that he was

(27:32):
able to galvanize his team bring themtogether in such a short period of time
when most of the country the narrativewas is that Colorado is going to be
lucky to win three games at most. Now, again, you can't go
off of just one game because itcould easily be a scenario where they lose
their next three games. Just that'show college football is, That's how sports
is at times. But again,I would say the eye test shows me

(27:56):
and tells me that Colorado Atto isbetter than people had initially thought based on
just what we're thinking that there wasso much turnover that how could you bring
a team together so quickly? Butsomehow Dion was able to do it.
And I still contend, as wetalked about earlier, for college football,

(28:17):
Dion is very good for college football. He's a character, he's a personality.
He brings some excitement, and whetheryou like him or not, he's
going to move the needle no question. Like you said, if it's saying
we're coming, we're coming, noo, we're here, we have officially arrived.
And you know it's one wins,it's one game. But I'll tell
you this, what Travis Hunter pulledoff in that game with the temperatures being

(28:38):
what they were, one hundred twentynine snaps in that game and one hundred
ten plus degree heat index, thatwas impressive right there. Yeah, lived
up to the hype obviously, playingboth sides of the ball, had some
fantastic catches, but even more so, he had the interception down there in
the red zone and that was obviouslyended up being one the key games.

(29:00):
I mean key plays in that victoryfor the Buffaloes. Penn State rolls on.
You saw that game more than likelyon NBC. Drew a lar quarterback.
You're getting talking about some new namesto look out for. He fires
on All Sailors, three hundred twentyfive yards, passing in a trio of
touchdowns, and Penn State just hangingaround in that little top five region.
It looks like Penn State could bethat sneaky team that we see each year

(29:23):
that sneaks in there into the collegefootball playoff picture. And obviously James Franklin
has been mentioned for the past severalyears as a coach who is bringing Penn
State back to that national prominence thatwe once have seen, but not able
to get over the hump because againcan't get past Ohio State, can't get
past Michigan there just in the BigTen East. But this is a team

(29:45):
that watch out. Penn State couldbe one of those sleepers and maybe they
don't get there, but I cantell you they could be a team that
spoils it from somebody for somebody else. I think. So I really knew
James Franklin, he's talked about. He's been waiting on that quarterback because sort
of the missing ingredient from what they'vehad. And we watched this team the
past few years, they've been closewith no cigar in terms of the quarterback
play. Speaking of quarterback play, you go out West going to the PAC

(30:08):
twelve had a nice day of allthe conferences yesterday they were undefeated thirteen over
the Pac twelve, going undefeated afterOregon State gets the victory. Though,
but again, I don't even knowif we can look at conferences now because
it changes every single week basically,So how much pride does the PAC twelve
have right now knowing that there's reallyno Pac twelve conference twenty more so sort

(30:33):
of a name only right. Yes, it was interesting to see how the
narrative was, you know, throughSports Center and through the other sports entities
that they were making a big pointof how no Pac twelve team lost in
that opening weekend, call them whatthey are, they had a good win.
Uh talking about Washington in particular Manfifty six nineteen and Michael Pennock Junior,
another guy. Seems like there's alaundyless It's this way every year,

(30:56):
but more so this year. There'sa lot of guys on this early.
He's in Heisman Watch. Pennox Junioris one of them. Four or fifty
yards, five touchdowns again, BoiseState knock over there. It's a good
program. First for four hundred andfifty yards in that game. He can
rocket that ball, my friend. There's definitely some quarterback play in college football
this year, and I'm excited tosee some of those matchups. And that's

(31:17):
why even the North Carolina South Carolinamatch up another a team in the top
twenty five, North Carolina getting thevictory there in Charlotte in the Battle of
the Carolinas and seeing Drake May andSpencer Rattler go head to head, which
I loved being able to see thatand Drake May, there's no question about
it, he has the tools tobe an NFL quarterback. I'm not stating

(31:40):
anything that people haven't already been ableto expose and talk about, but just
seeing can North Carolina be the teamon the defensive side and be able to
make the stops which they weren't ableto last year. And again it's one
game sample size. Obviously in SouthCarolina is depleted there on the offense of

(32:00):
line, but North Carolina looked differenton defense in that game against South Carolina.
In that victory, they certainly didyou know, thirty one seventeen who
up some more thoughts on this whenwe go down our acc rundown in the
next segment. But we can touchon a now since it's a you know,
sec acc type of game, SpencerRattler. Look, we've talked you
and I both would coach Biemer throughoutthe off season here, and I don't

(32:20):
think one of the things that Ianticipated was how many sacks eight nine,
sixteen. Yeah, and I knowthey've come a long way, but I
think the big thing with this defensethat's spending under a lot of fire in
North Carolina in Champel Hill with JeanChiswick running the show, the best friend
for coverage is a pass rush, and certainly they had the pass rush.
They got to the quarterback and thenleft those guys that usually get a little

(32:44):
bit torched out there on an islandin a position where they could attack.
And certainly you saw there's some injuriestoo that popped up for South Carolina.
But that was an impressive game forNorth Carolina. And not to sleep on
Brooks. The running back fifteen carriesone hundred three yards. The Gastonia native
may had a couple of rows thatwere off, but man, he made
some throws like you said, thatwere heisman worthy because his offensive line gave

(33:07):
him a little bit of time andthat's the key. And for South Carolina
they were not able to do thatwith Spencer Rattler. But Rattler was still
thirty of thirty nine for three hundredand fifty three yards, didn't have any
tds, but again, he didn'thave any opportunity to have a whole lot
of time because he was running forhis life or he was getting Really was

(33:27):
unlike anything I've seen in a while. I mean, was struggles. But
it was very difficult if you're aSouth Carolina fan to watch that just knowing
that, hey, you've got thetalent that you have, but then the
injuries that you talked about it theyrear their ugly head, not only in
that game, but right before afew weeks before that game with their leading
receiver Ju Swells, you know, not being one hundred percent. And at

(33:51):
Trey Knox he finally was able toget back and actually he played in that
game at the tight end. Butstill South Carolina as a whole was not
one hundred percent deeper dive into theacc momentarily here just arounded some of the
scores from the top twenty five thatwe made up, recovered Notre Dame with
a big win with Sam Hartman,a quarterback fifty six to three Tennessee.
Look, I want to talk aboutthis in more detail, Tony Yelly.

(34:12):
That was a tough environment for him, just to get his guys back on
the field. I think that's thebig win. He talked about it for
the game and Mike Hollis being ableto lead the team out the tunnel onto
the field there in Nashville and knowingjust what that has meant the first time,
being able to play football again afterthat tragedy there in Charlottesville. And
so you have to understand that howemotional it probably was for all of those

(34:37):
players, and how hard that wouldhave to be to turn those emotions off
and then flip the switch to havethe emotions of actually playing football, and
not only playing football, but playingagainst a top team like Tennessee. And
I felt that, yes, theystruggled there in the second half, but
there in the first half, Ifelt Virginia was doing a lot of good

(35:00):
things. They just don't have thetalent obviously relative to what Tennessee has,
and it just wore them down throughoutthe game. And I know it's a
tough scenario for Tony Ellie. Andas he talked about the victory, they
had a victory in that game againstTennessee, it was actually just playing the
game. Was their victory, nodoubt about it, just to get back
on the field. Tennessee wins agame forty nine thirteen. Joe Milton runs

(35:22):
for two passes for two and youcan throw the ball ninety yards, we
found out. So that's a bigkey to as well moving forward. If
you ever need a ninety yard passJoe Milton, Yes, another guy could
probably throw at ninety yards on oneleg, as Caleb Williams. He goes
for five touchdowns against Nevada sixty sixto fourteen, and a couple of interesting
games too. Again we know britvinibles well you mentioned earlier, seventy three

(35:43):
to nothing. A good start forthe number twenty Oklahoma Sooners. I think
that's a great start because there wasquestions not only about Oklahoma's offense last year,
but also even from the defensive side, giving up a lot of points
Now. Obviously, Arkansas State comingout of the Sun Belt is not anywhere
near some of the competition that they'regoing to play in the Big Twelve.
But it's game one. A lotof things, you know, you're working

(36:06):
out some of the rust, soto speak, and very impressive showing there
for Oklahoma. I just wish theywere playing somebody else, though, Play
a Big twelve opponent, play aPower five opponent, not a group of
five. And then the teams thatare playing FCS opponents right now in college
football. I know it's part ofcollege football, but I would love to

(36:27):
see getting more into the big matchupsthat fans want to see. All right,
thirty seconds or less Heisman favorite ora lot it's way too work,
way too early. Are you giveme a name that comes to mind that
rows up there? Or the weekone charts well? As Neon Dion said
that Sanders, his son, wouldhave had the Heisman at his crib if

(36:49):
those guys wouldn't to drop those twogo routes because those have been Heisman moments.
He said that at half times Iwould say, you know, should
or Sanders right there with you?I mean, he just had an incredible
game. Now, but it's CalebWilliams just because he's the incumbent, and
you know, he's the guy thatpeople are going to look at right now.
So I think that he has thebest opportunity. But there will be

(37:12):
somebody that will rise up that willbe unexpected. We'll at least throw their
name in the hat because we gota lot of college football left. Big
quarterbacks tonight facing off Duke and Clemson. We're gonna preview the game. More
detail coming up here on the EnglesTailgate Show and a look at the ACC
what happened this past weekend. We'llgive you a view of what's going on
in the Atlantic Coast Conference and whatto expect this coming season. That's Richmond

(37:32):
Weaver. I'm John Ellis. We'relive from Camperdown Plaza, downtown Greenville.
It's the Engles Tailgate Show. Wecontinue with more right after this. This
is the Engles Tailgate Show on ninetytwo point five w e s C.
Now Here are your hosts, JohnEllis and Richmond Weaver. Look, it's

(38:12):
hot outside, we can get that, but we're in the shade right here
and you can be too. Livefrom Campernown Plaza, run across the group
therapy falls cower right here downtown Greenville. Beautiful day to be talking Clemson football.
Is Duke and Clemson tangle at eightpm live right here on ninety two
point five WSC live from Wallace WadeStadium. How about a season opener at
Wallace Wade right in the shadows ofthe you know Cameron in doors, and

(38:37):
there is so much history there.I mean, it's absolutely crazy. And
so I've got some stats for you. How about this, let's here.
I love Staats. So Wallace Wade, if you don't know, he was
former head coach for Duke Blue Devils, and he had four seasons where he
won nine games. This was inthe forties. They were a powerhouse back

(39:00):
then. So he leaves, becallsWorld War Two, So he enlists in
the Army and then comes back andwins another Southern Conference championship. Yes,
after doing that, Yes, Andso then now Mike Elko wins nine games
in his first season. There's onlybeen seven times that Duke has won nine

(39:22):
games, and Wallace Wade has fourof them, got a stadium named after
him. David Cutcliffe has two ofthose, and then Mike Elko. So
just to put it in perspective,Mike Elko did something very historic yea in
duke football history based on getting ninewins last year. Yeah, no doubt
about it. Mike Yelko raining aCoach of the Year in that conference.

(39:45):
And I'll tell you this before shehad maybe in thirty years, forty years,
fifty years, it'll be Mike EyelkoStadium five and Durham there. Yes,
it's the English Tailgate Show. Wecontinue live. You're taking a deeper
look into the Atlantic Coast Conference andyou know, look, I'll tell you
this. You mentioned Mike Kelko. We're going to preview this game in more
detail. But you know, prettypredictable week one in terms of what happened

(40:06):
in the ACC Wake Forest. Youknow, new quarterback, new look.
But it's against Elon thirty seven toseventeen. NC State had their hands full
against Yukon for a minute, butthey barely survived twenty four fourteen in that
game. And I talked about itthat Jim row Junior, I know he's
going to be doing some things thatto get Yukon back to respectable football.
And I'm going back to the dayswhen had Dan Orlovski as the quarterback.

(40:30):
As you see Dan Orlowski on ESPNnow and does a great job there.
And I know you and I havetalked about Dan love his coverage of NFL
and college football. But NC Statetraveling to Yukon to play that game.
I questioned, what in the worldare they doing traveling to that game?
Because again, if you're going totravel someplace, have it a big time

(40:51):
powerhouse type of team rather than Yukon. Because you stumble against Yukon, then
people are going to question. AndNC State did stumble a little bit against
Yukon, winning by ten. That'sa tough place to play. But NC
State again, now they're in thesame scenario. Brand new quarterback transfer Brandon
Armstrong from Virginia. You know how'she going to look? So a lot

(41:14):
of questions with a lot of theseACC teams right now. With the battle
miami'ss assault. David Hale was onside, our good friend reporting live for
ESPO, and he's like, Miami, Miami, Miami. Well, one
team came out with thirty eight points, the other came out with three.
I think you can guess which oneit was. It was the homebound Hurricanes.
And look, Tyler van Dyke asolid game two hundred one yards passing
a touchdown. And you know, this is a big question about Miami.

(41:35):
Can christa ball get this program ontrack? Mario Christobal of course, second
year with that program, there weresome ups and downs last year. Is
this year maybe this offense gets cookinga little bit. Brand new offensive coordinator,
brand new defensive coordinator there for MarioChristoval in year number two. So
a lot of question marks. AndI think the biggest one though, is
TVD Tyler Van Dyke, the quarterbackfor the Canes. Not so much his

(41:57):
talent level, but can't he stayhealthy? Injuries derailed his season last year.
So it's all about staying healthy forthe Miami Hurricanes because they will be
an improved team from last year.I think they will be too. You
look at a couple of coaches thathad their teams motivated in the second half
in this conference. Let's talk aboutlast night with Mike Norvelle coming out of
the States, but let's not forgetabout Jeff Brohm with Louisville. And I

(42:19):
feel a little bad for old BredKeyan and Georgia Tech down there the way
they came out and stumbled a littlebit in the second half. My goodness,
a twenty six to six differential inthe second half, and that was
down in Atlanta. What a bigwin for Louisville. And that's another team
that I think watch out for Louisville. Not to say that they're going to
win the ACC or anything from thatstandpoint, but I'm just saying that they

(42:40):
could be a team that trips someother teams up that you have to be
careful of in the ACC because youknow, in any time conference play,
something can happen, especially if you'reon the road. The great victory there
for Louisville with the explosion that theyhad there in the second half, knowing
that Georgia Tech looked really good inthe first half. But that's a different
look at North Carolina team that canall of a sudden me taken seriously as

(43:01):
a team that can make a playoffrun. Yeah, and it's the defensive
line. And we've talked about ithow many times John. To have a
successful program doesn't matter if you're highschool, college level NFL. You've got
to have a quarterback, we knowthat, and you've got to have an
offensive line to protect that said quarterback. But you also have to have a
defensive line that can get after theopposing quarterback. And North Carolina looked like

(43:25):
they had guys in place and wereable to obviously what we saw get after
Spencer Rattler, and can they dothat throughout the season. We still have
a lot of football left to beplayed, as I've mentioned several times,
but again, the eye test lookeda little bit different for North Carolina second
year under Jean Chiswick. There that'sdefensive coordinate brown boy, it looked entirely

(43:46):
different than it. I mean, that's entirely different looking unit. When you've
got the ability, like I saidearlier, the secondary's best friend when you're
getting torched last year for guys likeapp State and others, you get a
little pass rush cooking there and allof a sudden you can get things done.
And again I had tipped to TonyIlliot. I know it wasn't the
outcome they wanted, but as hesaid after the game, they come back
after the tragedy that happened last yearthat basically shut down their season, but

(44:07):
more importantly took the lives of somany near and dear to that program.
To come back out of the fieldwith a player that was impacted by this
tragedy leading him out of the tunnelin Nashville in this game, I think
that's a winning itself to get backout there against a very game opponent in
Tennessee. And my hat's off toTony Yellow. Even though the scoreboard doesn't
reflected. He said up for thegame, our big win was getting things

(44:30):
done, getting out there on thefield, oh, of course. And
I think that was a big partof it is because I think the quest
now for Virginia, at least earlyon in the season, is trying to
get back into some normalcy, gettingback to just these guys being a student
athlete and then are not thinking aboutthis all the time. And there was

(44:52):
obviously a lot of reminders game one, because you haven't played since that tragedy
where you lost some of your teammatesand knowing how difficult that was going to
be, so it was almost goodfor them to go ahead and get out
there and actually play and get hit. And I know that sounds crazy,
but a lot of football players thatI've talked to and you have too,

(45:13):
John, that it's weird that gettinghit and getting an action can kind of
settle your nerves because it's the anticipationof the game. It's the butterflies that
we all feel who've ever played sportsor ever been in a situation where you're
a little bit nervous, you feelthose butterflies, and once you can just
get going, then you calm downa little bit. And I think that

(45:35):
was a big thing for Virginia tobe able to get into another football game,
to go ahead and get past someof those butterflies. And they'll never
get past it, obviously, butat least they can try to get back
into a normal routine and have thatnormalcyne no doubt about it. I mean,
it's gonna be everything to this teamto get back on track as we
start to look ahead Clemson and dotonight man Clock and rich I can't say

(46:00):
it enough. We talk about itevery day. I'm one to four nine
Fox Sports Upstate or afternoon Lineup kicksoff with Richmond Weaver the Richmond we Were
show at three pm. How manyof our callers, including Billy and Neil
and somebody of our friends that callin and in Delvin, have been talking
about how excited they are for thiscollege football season. We're for Clemson fans
out there. It starts tonight, just a few short hours, my friend,
and it's been a long, longday, I think for a lot

(46:22):
of Clemson fans because they've watched everybodyelse play, and we talked about there's
some teams that are already played twogames out there, So this is a
scenario where I know fans are justwanting to watch the Tigers play, and
probably not as much as the coachingstaff and the players just want to get
out there and play. Get outthere and play and hit. That's the

(46:42):
whole thing. But we've got anotherhour in store for you here on the
Ingles Tailgate Show. Coming up next, one of my favorite segments of all

(49:22):
But we got the whole crew outhere and enjoying this broadcast all the way

thirty David shoe Made the director broadcastingfor the Blue Devil. I amg Sports
Network, but join us giving usa look behind enemy lines, giving us
perspective on this Duke football team withMike Yelko. Of course, Rainy coach
of the year in this conference ninewins. What do they have in store

(49:43):
this year? We will find outat four thirty with David Shoemate. You
want to stay tuned for that. But it's time from my favorite segment of
the whole football season. It's timefor on this day, tied up the
Dolorian, time to get ship downmemory lay we road. It's odd this

(50:05):
day and Clemson football history. Here'sRichmond Weaver. And as much as you
love this segment, tip mister Ellis, you know I love this segment.
Yes all this date. I'm ahistory buff and I always like walking back
in history. So let's rewind justa little bit this date September fourth.

(50:25):
How about we go back to twothousand and ten for the Clemson Tigers as
they would open the season against NorthTexas and have a thirty five to ten
victory there in two thousand and ten. And what was special about that game?
How about this? Dawson Zimmerman kickeda seventy nine yard punt in that
victory over North Texas and that wasthe second longest punt in Clemson history at

(50:51):
the time. But we also haveto look at just beyond September fourth,
because it's Labor Day. So howabout the Tigers playing on Labor Day.
Let's do it on this day?Right? How about this in September the
third, two thousand and seven LaborDay. This is what I'm talking about.
Clemson opened the season with a twentyfour to eighteen victory over Number nineteen

(51:13):
Florida State sorry Miss Melissa level,Yes, over the number nineteen Florida State
Seminoles. And it was a nationallytelevised game on ESPN and was only Clemson's
second game on Labor Day all time, and it's first since nineteen eighty two.
And Colin Harper became the first Tigerquarterback in history to beat a ranked

(51:35):
team in his first career start, and it was Clemson's fourth win over Florida
State in a five year span, and it was the fifth straight win for
the Tigers over a top twenty fiveteam, tying a school record at that
time. And then who can forgetthis time last year on Labor Day,
Yes, twenty twenty two, asClemson would record an interception on the game's

(51:59):
first play from scrimmage. Andrew Makubowould get that interception and they would block
two points in the game for thefirst time in fifteen years, as the
Tigers would go on to be GeorgiaTech forty one to ten score. You
knew that. That's how I knowwhat Childers, our buddy of her remembers
that I picked that score exactly onthe number. Yeah, he's giving me
a handshake. Red there, hostof the Tiger Tail Get Show. You're

(52:21):
here from coming up soon here onthe Ingles Tiger Tiger Get Show. Yes,
and that game obviously down in Atlantaat Mercedes ben Stadium, So that
is OTD on this date. Ilove a Tiger Football History Labor Day edition.
And look, there's some history herebetween these two programs. As we
talk about, you know, Duketangling of course tonight with this very good

(52:43):
Clemson program that's looking to reshape andrebuild their image offensively. More on that
coming up here at this hour.As we talk a little bit about what's
going on with this what did youcall it? Order? This offensive attack?
The dirt, the dirt rate.I didn't love with that. That's
Dabo Sweeney coming up with a dirtraid because there's going to be a run
component to this. It's not alljust going to be airing it out.

(53:05):
He's going to make sure you getthe run game going, and that's a
big part of what Clemson is goingto look to do. But yes,
as you look at this series history, Clemson holds a thirty seven to sixteen
and one lead in the series withDuke, including twenty four and one lead
in games played in Death Valley anda fifteen and twelve advantage in road contests.

(53:27):
And here's what's interesting too, Ihad totally forgotten about this, but
this series also includes a thirty threeto twenty one Clemson victory in Tokyo,
Japan, Yes, right, innineteen ninety one as part of the Coca
Cola Classic, and they also,Tigers got a victory three to nothing at
a neutral site when in the OysterBowl in Norfolk, Virginia nineteen seventy one.

(53:51):
Yes, who would have thought YolkBowl? That's right, Yes.
In Clemson is also ten and onein the last eleven meetings against Duke,
and only one road game versus Dukeunder coach Dabo Sweeney, and the last
meeting was a thirty five to sixloss at Clemson Duke. That is a
loss to Clemson, but Duke onlytrailed fourteen to six at halftime in twenty

(54:15):
and eighteen, but Clemson was ableto get things really going there in that
second half. Telling you there, spent a minute since they've met, like
you said twenty eighteen, listened tosome of the names you mentioned. Trevor
Lawrence twenty one of twenty eight inthat game, justin Ross, a guy
that's looking to break through with theChiefs this year. He's healthy again.
That's good to see Cleveland, FarrellTravis eat and it's a who's who of
NFL names in that game. Reallywas and that's why I want Clemson fans

(54:38):
just to remember that twenty eighteen teamwas special. I mean, that is
a talented roster. That's Clemson team. Ever in your opinion, yes,
without a doubt, and as muchas the Deshaun Watson led team and obviously
being able to get that last secondvictory against Alabama, I don't think you
can have a better ending to aseason. That twenty eighteen team was better

(55:01):
than the twenty sixteen national champion teambecause you just go down the list.
I mean, you've got Trevor Lawrence, as you mentioned, You've got Travis
etn who statistically speaking, is thegreatest running back in ACC history because he
holds so many ACC records. Imean, how can you deny that?
And then justin Ross t Higgins,Hunter, renfro Amari Rodgers, I mean,

(55:22):
it's just loaded with talent. Andthen that's just offensive side. Forget
about the defensive side with Christian Wilkinsand all the other names that you had
talked about a loaded twenty eighteen teamand no wonder they went fifteen and oh
the first team in the modern erato go fifteen and Ozer and I still
don't understand why Clemson that team doesnot get more credit for being one of

(55:45):
the greatest teams in all of collegefootball. Oh, I think you're right.
I think if you look at Clemson, not only within the program there,
but all time from a college perspective, it's at least a top three
four team. Just the amount oftalent, what they did throttle they put
on Alabama in the title game,Yeah, it's right up there. Yeah.
And just remember too, that wasa season where you had Trevor Lawrence

(56:06):
didn't even start until the fourth gameof the season. That's when there's a
lot of controversy going on with KellyBryant and him transferring and Trevor Lawrence getting
knocked out of the game there againstSyracuse, and it's Chase Bryce with an
amazing fourth down throw in the catchby t Higgins, and then Chase Bryce
continuing as he has a big run, and then it's Travis Etn that seals

(56:28):
the deal with his legs in thatvictory. But then after that, I
mean, it was gangbusters for Clemson. They just couldn't be stopped, averaging
almost forty four points per game andthen obviously scoring forty four points in that
victory in the National championship game againstAlabama. You know who liked playing Duke
over the use our good friend CharlieWhitehurst. Oh yes, two of the

(56:49):
top three passing performances all the timefor Clemson against Duke was Charlie Whitehurst two
thousand and two and two thousand andthree through for a combined five hundred and
fifty one yards in those two games. Can you imagine in Charlie Whitehurst seven
hundred fifty one yards. Can youimagine Charlie Whitehurst in today's college football game?
Oh my goodness, Oh, justyou know every because he was ahead
of his time. He was aheadof his time. Remember that was not

(57:12):
a time where you would throw itforty times a game at all. But
what he was able to do.He was one of the special quarterbacks that
I think is overlooked at times inClemson history. He would be all of
that on film, and then inthe nil game he would be a winner.
He'd be one of the top fivel nil guys in college football.
No nout about it. Here's aname too, just going back through the

(57:32):
history of this series, you mentionedso many great nuggets there. The all
time leading receiver single game against Dukefor Clemson. Here's the name for your
Roscoe Crossbea that was about, yes, the fastest guy at that time that
Clemson had ever signed. Well, coming up next, we're going to dive
into the matchups a little bit betweenDuke and Clemson. What to expect on

(57:53):
each side of the ball. Wehaven't really done that yet in the show,
and it's time to really get tothe nuts and bolts of what this
Clemson team rings this season. Alot of changes on defense, You're missing
a few guys from last year, but some new names like Peter Woods and
company up there on the front line. And then what is Duke all about?
Where are they strong? Where arethey susceptible? We'll give you the
breakdown on that four thirty. We'rejoined by David Shoemate to play by play

(58:15):
voice of the Duke Blue Devils aswell. This is the Ingles Tailgate Show
live from Camperdown Plaza right here onninety two point five WSC. This is
the Ingles Tailgate Show on ninety twopoint five w E se is The Ingles

(58:37):
Tailgate Show continues live on ninety twopoint five w SC. Richmond Weaver,
I'm John Ellis and we got youlive until the top of the hour.
We're giving you all the nuts andbulls you need to know about Duke versus
Clinston tonight to kick off game ofthe season for both of these very promising
programs. Of course, Duke moreof an up and coming team with Mike
Yolko Coach of the Year last yearin this conference with nine wins and coming

(59:00):
up. In about fifteen minutes,we'll hear from David Shoemate, the play
by play voice of the Duke BlueDevils, giving you an inside look in
terms of what do you expect itwas you go behind enemy lines and give
you a look at what Duke isall about this season. We'll take our
own look into some of the matchupshere as look Clemson you talk about at
the Dirt Raid, the DeVos talkedabout a brand new offense with Kade club

(59:21):
Nick getting his first season, Idon't want to say first start under his
belt. He's had some action. He's taken a few bumps, a few
bruises there, but he's also hadsome exceptional plays. We saw him coming
late there for dj uey Ung Galoway, by the way, had tip the
DJ had a heck of a dayfor organ State yesterday. It was good
to see him back out there.Yeah, five touchdowns and I think Dabo

(59:42):
Sweeny would be one of the firstthat would also say, hey, congratulations
DJ for you know, your performance, and wishing DJ the best and his
new opportunity and hopefully that we'll havesuccess for Oregon Staton. Obviously a lot
of things going on with Oregon Stateand not knowing what conference are going to
be in. It doesn't matter rightnow, because the beautiful thing about once

(01:00:02):
the college football season starts, wedon't need to talk about all the other
stuff. We don't. We talkabout games, game time. Right as
the Tigers get ready to take onDuke later tonight, it was a fact
this is the show about matchups andwhat we can control and all the stuff
going on in conferences right now, there's a lot of unknown parts right there,
and I think we're gonna let thatkind of play itself out. But
in terms of what we do know, we do know these are two teams

(01:00:24):
right now that are more closely matchedthan ever with Duke coming in nine wins
and look at all starts with theirquarterback Riley Leonard, an exceptional player.
Richmond that it had some really goodmoments last year and they're feeling a lot
of excitement. I believe there weresome comments made on a show that's near
and dear to your heart, themac Lane and Gramley podcast, was that

(01:00:45):
the quarterback Riley some comments about thisbeing was just another game another opponent.
Is that what I heard? That'sright? And I think just trying to
have that type of mindset of notover hyping the game and psyching yourself out
before the game that you're oh,my goodness, it's Clemson that's coming in.

(01:01:05):
And how many times have we talkedabout it, John that I think,
even from a perspective of Clemson afew years ago, don't worry about
you know what, and we've heardDabo talk about it. You don't worry
about what's on the other helmet, you don't worry about what stickers are on
there, what name is on theirjersey. Used play to your standard and
that's what Clemson has being able tofocus on over the years. And I

(01:01:27):
think that's what Riley Leonard was tryingto say. Also. But of course
there's going to be a few peopleare gonna take this beautiful podcast that you're
a big part of help producing andjust clip a few things and say,
oh, look what he's saying.I'm with you. I think yes,
and rightfully. So you know itgoes this is the time where it's talking
season and you're going to be thetrash talking is going to be beginning.

(01:01:50):
And whatever bulletin board material you cangrab from coaches, from players, from
fans, whatever it might be,just to serve as a little bit of
extra motivation for a particular game. But make no mistake about it, this
is a big game and the DukeBlue Devils they know this is a big
game with Clemson coming in because atthe end of the day, no matter
how good Florida State looked right nowagainst LSU, the team to beat still

(01:02:15):
in the ACC is the Clemson Tigers, and this is Duke's opportunity to try
to do that in Durham and knowingthat it's the opening game of the season,
this is a huge game for theDuke Blue Devils. It's a huge
game for Duke, and it's anequally huge game for Clemson as they come
in facing another team week one toopen the season that's not a powder puff

(01:02:36):
team, not a team and youtalk about some of the question marks about
this team again revolves a little bitaround the receiving corps. You've got Randall
Williams Collins. You're looking for bigthings out of Williams. I think this
season in terms of what he bringsto the table. Here's somebody I'm looking
at, Jake Brininstall the tight end, and I think in this game in
particular, where they might be alittle bit strong upfront, Duke in terms

(01:02:58):
of their offensive line with guys likeopen Franklin Carter coming back, he's a
big impact player. Yes, therunning game might have a bit of a
hard time at times, but boy, I think they can attack these linebackers
and part of the safety corps withthis tight end game. And we know
that Debos Swinny, no matter who'scalling the plays, values that in the
passing game. Brennan still now hasa chance to be sort of the bell
cow tied end in this offense.Yeah, and we've talked about it for

(01:03:21):
a couple of years. Where hasthat tight end been for the Clemson Tigers.
Where has the Jordan Leggett type ofplayer, where have they been?
You know, Davis Allen, maybehe wasn't utilized enough over the past couple
of seasons, and we get tosee now Davis Allen in the NFL potentially
out. He's been able to formin the preseason, but just looking at
Brendon Stool, he's a guy thatcan be a matchup problem for some of

(01:03:45):
these teams. And obviously with Clemsonand their experience offensive line for returning starters
coming back, obviously losing Jordan McFadden, but you have guys that are there
that can protect kay to Klubnick andwhat we've said all along, you give
some of these quarterbacks a few seconds, that's all they need. And remember,
Kate Klubnick is a five star highschool recruit. He was the number

(01:04:09):
one dual threat quarterback coming out ofthe state of Texas, and we know
how good the state of Texas footballis. So this is not a guy
that doesn't come in with some extremeacculades. And now can you have the
opportunity of learning from last season andsome of the opportunities that he had,
and maybe there were some scenarios wherehe just got thrown to the Wolves and

(01:04:30):
he was in some difficult situations allahNotre Dame game. But now he's been
able to have the entire spring, the entire offseason, and into fall camp
knowing that he's the guy, he'sthe number one quarterback, and I do
believe that's a different mindset for quarterbackswhen they begin a season. I mean,

(01:04:50):
you're totally right. And Will Puttnhamyou mentioned him, he might be
one of the unsung MVPs of thisteam coming into this season with the experience
he has, the position he plays, that's so vital. The team did
announce on their social media the captainsfor this game tonight. It's going to
be Rooke a roller roll after threeyears. I've gotten that name right,
by the way. It's gonna beMitchell May's Tyler Davis in the middle there

(01:05:12):
on defense. We'll talk about thatgroup in a minute. And Will Putnham
captain's tonight. And Putnam is aforce in the middle for that offensive LINECS
and I think Putnam is one ofthe guys that makes this offensive line go.
I mean he is the leader ofthat offensive line in obviously you know
at that position when you are thecenter, Yeah, everything starts with you.
As much as we talk about guysto have to handle the ball on

(01:05:33):
every play, him in the quarterback, it doesn't get going until Will Putnam
gets the ball snapped to the quarterbackand so yes, Will Putnam is a
guy that we're wanting to see bigthings of from I should say, and
then what about Blake Miller there atright tackle, starting as a true freshman,
you know, now second season andopportunity for him to grow another season.

(01:05:58):
So you've got protection there from anoffensive line, and phil Still recognizes
it, also grading Clemson's offensive lineas a unit as number thirteen in the
country. So this is a topfifteen unit according to Phil Still, who
I do believe in. He knowshow to grade a lot of talent there
in college and obviously heading into theNFL. So I would say right now,

(01:06:21):
even from the perspective of you've gota Dwayne Carter there on that defensive
tackle for the Duke Blue Devils. But I do believe the advantages with the
Clemson Tigers there, with their offensiveline again, with those four returning starters
Clemson last year, they had theirups and downs in the secondary, and
I finally feel like, again fromhearing some of the coaches talk down they're

(01:06:41):
on campus throughout the fall practice here, that this secondary could suddenly become a
strength for this team. When youlook at the kind of defense they're going
to play, it'll be mostly likea four two five defense. You'll have
that big nickel probably Makouba in there. Oh it's going to be Oh yeah,
I've already talked about it. Yeah, he's gonna be that buffalo nickel.
He's put on some weight and I'mtelling you he looks thick. I

(01:07:02):
was able to spend some time withhim last week, and Makuba he's ready
and he's healthy and he's excited forthat nickel position. I think it'll help
him to be in that role, and I really do they need that against
this conference, against this schedule that'sgoing to feature a lot of good tight
end play. Duke has a verygood tighten in their own right. We'll
talk about here shortly with David Shoemate, the play by play voice of the

(01:07:24):
Duke Blue Devil's coming up period aboutseven minutes or so. But on defense,
look, what can you say?I mean, they've got the guys
up front, especially on the interiorportion of this line, Ruka Rovero,
Tyler Davis and the X factor XavierThomas Man. I'm excited to watch him
back out there. Limited snaps lastyear, but let's see what Big X
can do out there on the edge. Position because he is such a dynamic

(01:07:45):
athlete. I was listening to ourgood friends will Vandervoort and of course Levon
Kirkland on the Believe in Clemson Footballpodcast, a great show, by the
way, and I heard a coupleof comparisons that Levon was making. One
was James Harrison and the other wasthe White Freeny in terms of type,
getting off the edge, having thatlean, that's spin. I'm eager to
see this young man play because he'sbeen through a lot ridge oh yes,

(01:08:06):
he has, and being able topersevere and now have that opportunity. And
a lot of the Clemson players aretalking about how motivating it is for them
to watch Davior Thomas and be thatguy and now can you be one hundred
percent healthy? And what he canmean to this defense. And obviously you
talked about the guys in the middle, Tyler Davis, I mean, a

(01:08:28):
force to be reckoned with. Butthere's a lot of eyes that are going
to be on Peter Woods. Ohyes, the true freshman. Because as
we're looking at the depth chart, you've got Peter Woods and Tyler Davis,
and it says Tyler Davis or PeterWood, the old or game or game.
So in modern translation, that ormeans that Peter Woods he's running with

(01:08:51):
the number one unit at times andso, and that's not because Clemson has
a lack of guys on that unit. That means that Peter Woods is that
good. So watch out for PeterWoods. Not saying he's going to have
the breakout game today, but Ithink he is going to have a breakout
season. And we're going to betalking about that name for quite a while.

(01:09:13):
Well, and it's so great again. You lose a little bit in
the linebacking corps last year with thedeparture of Trenton Simpson, but to have
Jeremiah Trotter junior back who was clearlythe vocal leader of this defense and on
tape as well. And you've gotdouble zero there, Barrett Carter right beside
him out there, Number zero. He's going to be so important to this
not only pass rush, but justthat second level attack coverage, tackling intensity.

(01:09:35):
Those linebackers right there, and thatfour two five with Mkouba now is
the big nickel. It's a prettyimpressive looking front seven. It's very impressive.
And because you have Barrett Carter andJeremiah Trotter Junior. There, you
can do some different things in thatsecondary because you know you have those guys.
They can not only lock people up, but they can cover and obviously
they can stop the run if teamsare able to get through that defensive line

(01:10:00):
there. Now. Jeremiah Trotter Junior, it's a little banged up right now,
so we'll see, you know, from a health perspective, but from
emotional side as a leader, noquestion about he is that guy. Man.
Those two linebackers, if not thebest in the country, they're one
A, one B with the Universityof Georgia couldn't agree more. It's gonna
be fun to watch against a reallyprolific offensive tack With do coming up in

(01:10:24):
a minute, you're gonna hear fromtheir play by play voice, David Shoemate,
the director of broadcasting for Bluke Dubibles. I AMG Sports Network. We
go behind in the lines every weekand we're gonna start with David Shoemate coming
up next here on the Ingles Tailgateshowed live from Camperdown Plaza on ninety two
point five WSC. Good time togo behind enemy lines. I'll close their

(01:10:51):
look and Clumsonpona with our special weeklyguest with us schop on what Tigers will
face this week. Let's get thefour one one. Here's John Ellis as
we continue live on The Ingalls TailgateShow, getting you primed and ready for
Duke Clemson big season opener tonight liveeight pm from Durham. I mean,

(01:11:12):
you've got a big time opponent herein Duke that has made some strides and
leading the charge there as coach MikeElko, the ACC Coach of the Year
last season. Joining us now togo behind enemy lines is our good friend
David Shoe, made the play byplay voice director broadcasting for Duke Athletics.
David, thanks for making some time, my friend, No happy too.
Thanks for having me on fascinating timesin Duke obviously, but we'll dive into

(01:11:32):
a lot of what to expect fromthis team as a whole. But it
starts, obviously with coach Mike Elkocoming into this in his first season gets
the Coach of the Year, notand rightfully so. Look they get to
nine wins and they win the MilitaryBowl. Talk about the journey from the
beginning when you saw coach Elko comeinto building. What were some of the

(01:11:53):
early sort of reflections you have lookingback at the early days of coach Elco's
tenure. There. It's still veryearly in the ball game, but just
day one, day two, comingin talking to these players and talking to
those around the program. What stoodout to you with the reigning ACC Coach
of the Year. Well, sure, it really for me started at his
introductory press conference because you're there, and obviously Duke had mutually agreed to part

(01:12:16):
ways with David Cutcliffe, who'd doneso much and kind of revitalizing the program.
But no secret had fallen on hardtimes in his last couple of seasons
and really struggled in league play inparticular, and the last year there were
some some lopsided results. So Iwas sitting at his introductory press conference and
you're curious, kind of knew hisbackground as an elite defensive coordinator. What
was this going to look like, what was the thought process was going to

(01:12:39):
be. And every coach has ayou know, mantra, culture building phrase
or an acronym they like to gobehind, and he kind of rolled it
out at his introductory press conference andit was grind and he went through each
letter and what it meant, andwhen he got to the letter in he
said, the inn stands for nowand the plan is to win now.
And I think it turned a lotof heads, like, you know,

(01:13:00):
Duke has really struggled the last coupleof years, and I think a lot
of coaches might have gone up thereand said, hey, I need you
to stay with me. This isgoing to be a process as we rebuilt
this and that sort of thing. And it was like, okay, interesting,
and then they come out and shutout Temple in their first game.
Then it's like, oh, hewasn't kidding. I mean, it's time
to really turn the page. SoI think that to me, as much
as anything stood out to him thatit wasn't about him. It wasn't about

(01:13:25):
bringing in his people or his players, so to speak. It was about
doing right by Duke and doing rightby to be honest, a lot of
the players that were here last yearand now we're going to be on this
team with all the returners that I'msure we'll talk about go all the way
back to the Cutcliffe rare. Theseare some of the same guys now,
their bodies have changed in the weightroom, you know, obviously the nine
wins last year was very impressive. But to me, that's impressive to watch

(01:13:46):
him as a head coach to getbuy in from guys that he didn't necessarily
recruit, but to make them thebest football players they can be and get
this team in a place where,as you said, they go into a
game against Clemson or Worthy. Beingon that stage on Labor Day night is
awfully impressive what he was able todo in his first year. And I
think that maybe is the thing thatgets underrated about him because everyone looks at

(01:14:06):
what he did at Texas A andm or Dame Wick Forrest defensively and goes,
okay, mastermind, that's right, that's fair. But the way he
deals with people is equal to ormaybe more impressive to me. David Shumate,
play by play voice of the DukeBlue Devils, joining us here on
the Ingles Tailgate Show. And youlook at the schedule, I mean,
you forget this sometimes when you're coveringanother team, and I'm sure you're well

(01:14:29):
aware the narrow losses to Kansas,to Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Pittsburgh.
This team very easily, David couldhave been undefeated. Yet you kind
of laughed saying that but the narrowmargins in these losses really stand out to
me. Come back to some ofthose games, if you will, and
just talk about how close, evenin the losses they were in terms of

(01:14:49):
being competitive. Well, I meanjust to kind of from quickly. You
know, Duke had the ball atthe very end against Kansas with driving potentially
a chance to tie the game.George at Tech obviously went to overtime.
There was some controversy around an offensivepast interference call at home against North Carolina,
was driving down and maybe had achance to put the game out of
reach before missing a field goal. And as you said, Pittsburgh, a

(01:15:12):
two point conversion play in the finalseconds. If it goes you're talking about
overtime. So that's the fine line. The thing that to me stood out
about those close games, and reallyother games were at Kansas, Duke was
down by a couple of touchdowns inthe fourth quarter. Same story in the
second half against Georgia Tech. Samestory in the second half against North Carolina.
In same story against Pittsburgh. AndI guess the theme I'm going with

(01:15:35):
This team fights, they don't giveup, and it was impressive to watch
them find their way back into games, even the season finale at home that
they won against Wake Force. Theyhad to come back in the fourth quarter,
and you know, as we touchedon earlier, for a team that
the previous years had kind of struggledand some games had gotten away from them,
to show that level of mental toughnesswas very impressive. I also think

(01:15:58):
it speaks to what Dave Feeley hasdone. He's a strengthened conditioning coach.
He came over from Miami. WhenMike Elko came in. The conditioning in
the fourth quarter was noticeable, andhow Duke was able to come on.
But you're right that fine line.It could have been even more special season
than what they had if they hadjust that game against North Carolina. If
they had won that game, asI said, they got decided in the

(01:16:20):
final minute, it would have beenDuke and Charlotte taking on Clemson for the
ACC title and not the Tar Heels. Unbelievable turnaround it in a short time,
Duke taking on Clemson tonight eight pm. You'll hear the call of that
right here on the Clemson Athletic Networkwith Don Muntz and his counterpart is joining
us now. David hu made playby play voice of the Duke Blue Devils.
And how about this quarterback Riley Leonard? What can you say? I

(01:16:41):
mean, twenty touchdowns, six interceptionslast season, took care of the football
and then the running element two almostseven hundred yards rushing an extra thirteen touchdowns
on the ground. Number one, what do you make of that season in
terms of the dual threat? Andnumber two? Is there any effort to
lighten the load in terms of hisrunning game or do they want to keep
him cooking in that department. Ithink it's funny because, like the design,

(01:17:05):
runs are a piece of the gameplan, but I don't think there's
big of a piece as some peoplethink they are. It just speaks to
his raw athleticism. He grew upin Fairhope, Alabama, was an incredible
basketball player. So when he getsin trouble or maybe there's a rush coming,
he's really good at being elusive andgetting away and burning of defense are
coming after him and getting those scrambleyards. Did it several times last year.

(01:17:29):
You mentioned the close to seven yardrush, seven hundred yards rushing and
the thirteen rushing touchdowns. Some ofthose are on scramble, some of those
are on design runs. So Ido think that's a piece of the offense,
but I think maybe it underestimates howgood of a thrower he is that
he can do that as well, and obviously has a very experience receiving core
coming back led by Jayleen Calhoun whohad sixty two catches last year and nearly

(01:17:49):
nine hundred yards receiving. So Ithink that's a piece of it, but
I don't think teams should underestimate howwell he can throw the football. And
that's really what has helped this teamoffensively. When you have the progression,
the sack numbers are way down interms of what they've given up a couple
of years. Some of that isbecause you've got potentially a first round pick

(01:18:10):
at left tackle and Graham Barton andJacob Monk and some others along the offensive
line, but a lot of thatis Riley Leonard's escapability and teams having to
respect that, which is a littledifferent. You know, when you can't
be as aggressive quarterback because you're worriedabout them getting away. Yeah, and
talk about that a little bit. This offensive tackle, Graham Barton, who
is just many people around the NFL'sscope that I cover talk about him as

(01:18:32):
a potential prospect heading into whatever yearhe's going to be drafted. There the
impact he has on that offensive linethat is seeing some turnover here, But
you've got that rock out there attackle. Yeah, there's no question.
And the best way I can describehim, there's blocking and then there's moving
people, and he falls into thesecond camp. You know, Yes,

(01:18:53):
he takes care of his assignments.Guys don't get to Riley, but if
he's got opportunity to get to thesecond level. I've literally seen him move
linebacker, is completely across the lineof scrimmage, almost running into the running
back and clearing the whole. Imean, he is a physical presence.
When he comes off the ball.He is like the nicest young man you
will ever meet. He's from Tennessee. Off the field, he's kind of

(01:19:13):
soft spoken, but when he getsout there, he plays with an edge.
He appreciates the physicality of the gameand he is not waiting to absorb
contact. He is going out anddelivering it. And it's really impressive to
watch how he can just dominate guysat the line of scrimmage. And he's
going to have to be good forDuke to have a chance to do what
they want to this year. ThatI also think people shouldn't underrate what the

(01:19:36):
Blue Devils have inside. And JacobMonk, who's a very experienced player.
His dad played here at Duke inthe eighties. Maybe he doesn't get as
much attention because tackles gets so muchattention in the game protecting the quarterbacks.
But it's not just Graham Barton that'sbeen a big piece of this offensive line.
And then on defense, you lookat some of the numbers last year's
at the raw numbers, thirty secondFBS ranking and scoring twenty two points a

(01:19:59):
game, twenty seven against the run, sixty eight total. You had some
sacks there, about two and aquarter or two and three quarters per game
there. But a change at defensivecordator with Tyler Santucci talk about his background
and what they're looking to do defensivelyto up the game. With Mike Elko
being a defensive guy, what's themission there over the next three years to

(01:20:19):
get that defense up to an elitelevel. Yeah, it's interesting. Tyler
Santucci comes in from Texas A andm he's been with Mike Elk, who
has several different stops along the way, so you know when that position came
open, wasn't shocking that he wentwith Tyler And it's been fun to watch
him. There's a guy who playedlinebacker when he played back in college.
I saw about Graham on the offensiveside. On the defensive side, he's

(01:20:41):
like a mirror image. So youtalked him off the field, he's a
family man, he's almost soft spoken. Then you get on the field and
he's what you expect to linebacker tobe. When he's coaching, the guy's
up. So it's been fun towatch him do that and kind of step
into a role. We'll he'll bethe defensive play caller this year. And
I think because of the relationship thatMike Elko and he had, there's there's
a trust there. There's a bondthere that's evident to me in camp and

(01:21:01):
I think will be evident in thegames. And if you're looking in terms
of a jump for this defense tomake, I think you touched on it.
Improving the points per game allowed, improving the yard is giving up in
terms of the run game. Thatstarts with the tackles. Carter and Franklin
Jamie on Franklin are two really goodguys on the interior of the defense.

(01:21:23):
They've got experience coming back with theedge rushers, but maybe last year one
of the ways teams got after Dukea little bit was in the passing game
and chunk plays over the top,and I think they've put a lot of
time and effort into cleaning some ofthat up. Some of that has been
through the portal al Blade Junior comesover from Miami. Miles Jones comes in

(01:21:44):
from Texas, A and M.He's dealt with injuries the last couple of
years, but a really talented cornerthat comes in a little blasts from the
past with everything that's been going onat Northwestern. Jeremiah Lewis, who was
at here Duke for four years beforelast year, decided to go into transporport
over the summer. He is backinvolved in the safety rotation. And they've
got experienced guys at Nicol and JaylenStinson, So I think they are hopeful

(01:22:08):
they can take a big jump interms of defending the past this year.
That's certainly an area I'm gonna beinterested to see. David Shumate is the
director of broadcasting play by play voicefor the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network and
David, I'd be remiss if Ididn't shift the basketball for a minute and
ask what a journey it was forMike Chewsky coach K. You got the
chronicle those last few games there, and you know, obviously disappointing for Duke

(01:22:32):
fans, but what a career andwhat an ending it was, at least
in terms of the rivalry in NorthCarolina. I know it's better for some
Duke fans, but talk about whata magical run it was for coach K
for so many years and your journeywith him, at least from the play
by play side, Yeah, Imean you have to pull back and give
it some context. I mean, you know, gets to a thirteenth Final

(01:22:53):
four in his last season, thatbreaks the Tyler John Wooden So he's been
to the most ever final four.Is obviously the five nash Old Championships,
the thirteen hundred wins, and wegonna go on down the list and all
the crazy stuff that he's accomplished, and it was just it was a real
treat. You know, sometimes youdon't realize things in the moment, but
I hope to have enough perspective achance to go to practice and be around

(01:23:15):
him. And I was talking earlierabout Mike Elko and how well he knows
people. Coach k Is is probablythe most emotionally intelligent person I've been around
in terms of knowing, yes,the basketball side of it, but motivating
guys and knowing when they need topick me up, knowing when they need
a kick in the bud. Andyou know, he's still around. I
still see him at the facility. He comes out of practice and I get

(01:23:38):
to hang out with him, andto me, that's the cool part.
Obviously the wins and calling the gamesis fun, but you know, externally,
I think a lot of people seeCoach k Is the vicious competitor that
he is, and he wants towin. But being here Duke and being
on campus, you get to learna little bit about the man and and
you know his daughters and his grandkidsand how he is and he's awesome,

(01:24:00):
and it was really cool to document. And now you turn the page and
to see a guy who won anational title for him as a player and
obviously as an assistant coach now beingthe head roll and win an ACC title
in his first year and have achance to maybe take a major step forward.
This season, which John Shire coursesI'm talking about is awfully fun.

(01:24:20):
Yeah, it should be a funseason when that gets rolling around. They
have a non conference game with Arizonain the first week of the season,
and November will be here before weknow. It's it's kind of crazy that
summer's gone and off we go.But no, it's it's been fun and
it's been cool to see coach relaxa little bit as he enjoys retirement.
So interesting to see John Shier takingover the basketball side and new blood over

(01:24:43):
here with the football program with MikeYoko, and we'll see if they can
spark something special like Coach k didmany decades ago. The voice of the
Duke Blue Devil's David sho Made hasbeen our guest here on the Ingles Talegate
Show. David, have a goodcall tonight, enjoy the season. We'll

one Clemson and Duke my friend, let's get after it. Why not?
And when this plays in a stadium, the crowd is electric, I promise
you, and we'll see how electric. Wallace Waite Stadium is going to be
for the Duke Blue Devils tonight asthey host the Clemson Tigers here in acc

(01:25:53):

because it pays big at the gaspump. Low Prices love the savings at

(01:26:15):
Ingles dash markets dot com. Sofinal thoughts on this game, Richmond,
as we look to make our seasonalpredictions. I will see last season again
a reminder. I get them wrongall the time, the scores. But
the Georgia Tech game last year onLabor Day, I got that score right
on the button. It was ohfor the rest of the season. Well,
we won't talk about that. We'lltalk about how you did get the
Georgia Tech score right. So we'regoing to believe in what you say because

(01:26:36):
you come out of the gates hot. That's right. Final thoughts thought,
I mean, this is a bigmatchup. You're talking about Mike Elko's team,
a lot of juice up there atWallace Wade Stadium. Your final thoughts
and a score prediction from you,Richmond Weaver. Yeah, you know,
I think this is going to bea game. Obviously, we know the
nation is going to be watching. As we've talked about, there's other teams
in the country that they've already playedtwo games, and now Clemson and do

(01:26:58):
finally get to play their first gameof the season and the nation will be
watching because nobody else is playing. So how is Duke going to be able
to respond to this type of limelight. Clemson's been in this spotlight before,
They've been in this type of situationDuke has not even as much as they
had success last year, winning ninegames and the success that they had in

(01:27:18):
the ACC. This is a differentscenario when you're playing Clemson. Duke didn't
have to play Clemson last year, they didn't have to play Florida State,
they didn't have to play some ofthe top teams in the ACC. So
it's not taking anything away from Duke'srecord last year and the success that they
had, but this is a differentcaliber of team. So now for Duke

(01:27:39):
to win, they obviously have todo what they did last year, and
that's create turnovers. They were oneof the best teams being able in the
turnover margin actually what plus sixteen andturnover margin last year and also eleventh nationally
in time of possession. So canthey control the clock and obviously Riley Leonard,
their quarterback, is going to bethe key to that. They do

(01:28:01):
have a veteran offensive line Graham Bartonthere there on the offensive line. He's
an NFL prospect, could be afirst rounder. So they do have some
guys and Riley Leonard he's a dualthreat type of guy. The Duke Blue
Devils are seven and one. Lastyear when he ran the ball for more
than sixty yards per game, Sowatch out for Duke and Riley Leonard got

(01:28:24):
to be able to stop the run. But as we know, for Clemson
defense, defense, defense. Wecan talk about the offense all day long
and Kade club Nick, Garrett Rileyand all of that. Yes, I
know Clemson Tiger fans are looking tosee some type of offensive explosion here,
but I'm telling you it's all aboutthe defense and can they rattle Duke early
and then that will allow Clemson tohave some confidence getting the ball back multiple

(01:28:46):
times on the offensive side and gettingKade club Nick there in some rhythm.
Now you mentioned Barton, their lefttackle. He's a stud, Graham Barton.
He's going to be an NFL player, no doubt, very soon in
his future. But the running gameis interesting because you've got Ryley Leonard,
who had just a sh under sevenhundred yards last year rushing, and I'm
interested to see We talked to DavidShumate about this in the last segment.
Are they looking to curb that alittle bit or get the other running backs

(01:29:09):
involved, Jordan Waters to Quiz Mooreand Jalen Coleman. They've got some good
backs. I think for Clemson it'scritical to stop to run early and often
and make this very good quarterback ofcourse beat you with his arm, but
he can do it. But again, the secondary for Clemson I think has
been much improved from this time lastyear, no question about it. And
now moving Andrew mccouba to that nickelposition, I think he feels much more

(01:29:30):
natural in that position because he wasall over the backfield, I should say,
the secondary last year, and he'salso one hundred percent this year.
But to your point, for Duke, they also have to have a balanced
rushing attack. It can't just allbe Riley Leonard against this Clemson defense because
if you get two one dimensional, that's where Clemson will tear you apart from

(01:29:51):
the defensive side. So that's whya key is going to be can Duke
get any type of running game goingor you got to score. In mind,
I'm going to thirty seven to thirteen. The Tigers will get the victory.
Might be a little close there inthe first half, Tigers will pull
away come that third quarter. Ialmost went with that same score, but
I'm gonna go thirty four seventeen Tigersand a name to lookout for Robert Gunn

(01:30:13):
the new kicker, Yes, fillingin for of course Bat Potter. Seems
like it's been an eternity since there'sbeen no Bt Potter kicking for Clemson.
Big new name in the mix therewith Robert Gunn. I want to thank
everybody for being a part of thisshow. Melissa Level from Ingles for joining
us here, and of course DavidShoemate from the Duke play by play side
he joined us earlier in this show. For Richmond Weaver, I'm John Ellis.
This has been the season opener forthe Ingles Tailgate Show coming up later

(01:30:38):
tonight eight pm. You can hearDon Munson on the call right here on
ninety two point five WSC and theClemson Athletic Network. For Richmond, I'm
John. We'll see you next timeright here on the Ingles Tailgate Show ninety
two point five WSC. Enjoy thegame, y'all,
