(00:21):
Center, the Surgery Center at PelhamMcKy Heating and Air, and Palmetto State
Armory. Ready now here are yourhosts, John Ellis and Richmond Weavers.
Well for at least a moment. The sun is shining here in beautiful Clemson,
South Carolina. In more ways thanone. The storm has passed from

(00:43):
week one. Of course, we'lltalk about that game, which much more
detail analyze it, and a stormcould be brewing in the actual forecast today.
Keeping an eye on the head asit come to you alive from the
shadows of Death Valley right here inClemson, live from Little John Colisseum.
It's the Ingles Tailgate Show you byIngles, Low Prices, Love the Savings.
I'm John Ellis. Looks like Ijust got out of a swimming pool

(01:03):
walking up the hill. As alwaysfrom media parking, but we made it
in Richmond Weaver. It's time foranother edition of the Tingles Ship Angles Tailgate
Show, brought to you by Angles. How you doing, my friend,
I'm doing absolutely fantastic. And thecalendar says September, but we know,
still in the upstate, September stillmeans hot. I know, yes,

(01:25):
we might have some rain come kickoffand potentially some big thunderstorms after one o'clock,
but right now it is sunshine andas you mentioned, just the heat.
It's still out there. It's walkingaround. You see everybody tailgating right
now. They're getting all set upfor the two fifteen kickoff against Charleston Southern.
So there's a lot of activity alreadygoing around. But just from both

(01:48):
of us walking to get I don'tknow about this weather in terms of rain,
because it's still muggy and hot rightnow. It is. It's a
little muggy outside, but it's agreat day for football. Kickoff is it?
Two fifteen today? Against an interestingopponent. There's no history here.
Charleston Southern, a team that's gota new head coach. We'll talk about
that later in the show with thevoice of Charleston Southern a guy named Killian

(02:09):
McClatchy. He's a great guy.Had a chance to speak with him earlier
this week, and we're gonna hearfrom him in terms of what do you
expect from this team, A teamthat last week did get a win against
North Greenville. But Rich, I'dbe remiss if I didn't take a look
at what happened week, and Ihate to do it. Look, I
know Clemson fans are trying to getthat stink out of the room, and

(02:30):
I know Dabo Sweeney and talked aboutthis week. It was an odd game
and that you rush for two hundred, you pass for two hundred, you
end up with the loss, andit was a costly loss, a conference
loss week one. When you watchthat game, Rich, I mean we
were texting back and forth, youand I and our good buddies Mark Childress,
don Ja Davidson and the group textthere. What were your initial thoughts

(02:52):
coming out of that game? Well, I think the big takeaway is just
from a perspective, you say thathow it hurts from obviously a conference loss
and knowing that you don't have divisionsthis year. The top two teams are
going to play in Charlotte for theACC Championship. But it seems like it's

(03:13):
more than just a loss on theroad first game of the season against Duke.
It was how the loss occurred andthe national narrative right now that Clemson
is on the demise. Clemson, their dynasty, their run, however you
want to describe it is over, and Dabo Sweeney has somehow forgotten how to

(03:37):
coach, and that the Tigers arejust not what we have seen in the
past. And part of that istrue. Yea, you can see that
on the field, the Tigers arenot the same type of team as the
twenty sixteen, the twenty eighteen teamthat we've seen historically, where Clemson was
in the national spotlight and was talkedabout you know, how long could this

(03:58):
dynasty last at Clemson and you knowhow Dabbo was able to build that.
But there's also a side of justfirst game and being out there at least
you get the first game over, and also give Duke a lot of credit.
Duke is a very good team. They've got veteran guys and knowing that
they basically had ninety nine percent oftheir production coming back from last year,

(04:25):
and they were motivated. This wastheir lipmus test to see was last season
somewhat of a Fluke under first yearhead coach Mike Elko, getting acc Coach
of the Year, getting nine winsthere again, remember Duke was coming in
to that season last year with MikeElko taking over. They started football in
eighteen eighty eight. Wow, theyhad had six seasons where they won nine

(04:53):
games since eighteen eighty eight. Sixseasons of course, and so and four
of those were in the forties whenthey were in the Southern Conference. You
can see that Duke hasn't had awhole lot of history and so could they
replicate what we saw last year gettingnine wins and a better way for them

(05:14):
to do that? At home againstClemson, you win by twenty one points,
you send a statement that Duke isI would say a team that has
some optimism. They seem to behaving an opportunity of progressing. And that's
the other side of it also isthat there's teams in the a SEC that

(05:38):
are getting better and Clemson fans needto understand that. I just know it
looks from a national narrative or onpaper and say, oh, how did
Clemson lose to Duke? You knowthat can't happen, especially how Clemson has
been able to dominate this series. And as you mentioned, Duke is a
basketball school, Yes, and soit's a different scenario from that standpoint,

(06:01):
and that's why I think the lossstings even more. And then the aspect
I know we'll talk much more aboutit is people were hoping to see a
different type of offense, to seesomething different with Garrett Riley as the new
offensive coordinator and also Kate Klubnik asthe starting quarterback. Oh yeah, this

(06:21):
was going to be his time toshine. Absolutely, you marry the both
of those together, that we weregoing to see something completely different from Clemson's
offense. And to a certain degree, we did see something completely different because
it couldn't score. Made some historyin fact, and the never under the
Debo Sweeney tenure have they rushed andpassed for two hundred yards apiece and lost

(06:43):
a game. And you look atthe raw stats again, I know we
love numbers, and then we hadsome context to it. First down battle
twenty nine to seventeen in Clemson's favor, total yards four under twenty two to
three seventy four. They rushed onceagain, and it seems to be the
winning formula for Clemson two hundred andthirteen yards rushing on forty attempts. They
only had one penalty in the wholegame. So it was a weird mix

(07:03):
of great discipline and a lack ofdiscipline at times because you get down to
the red zone and in what fourstraight opportunities you have chances. In the
second half, by the way,the team did not score a point and
they did not punt. Yes,think about that. Crazy, When the
heck does that happen in college football? It was just right there, the

(07:24):
operational stuff that just went south. And I think you gotta look at special
teams too. I mean not havingbt Potter in the mix, and a
Robert Gunn has got a bright future, who's got a big time leg.
But some of those kicks were alittle too low for my liking. I
think Dabos Swinney talked about after thegame the kicks were low themselves, and
we could see right there on thegame film and during the game they were

(07:45):
low, and you missed two fieldgoals and then Rich you just cannot And
I know Dabos Swinney knows this.I know this entire staff knows this.
You get inside the red zone, inside the green zone. I mean you're
inside the ten eight seven hard line, and you're starting with procedure penalties and
then you fumble the football. Hey, hats off the K club nic though
for running down that fumble retar.Of course, that was big. Defensively,

(08:09):
we can talk about that much more, But I think offensively it starts
right now with a couple of things. Number One, it's a new offensive
coordinator. It's a new system. There is no preseason in college football.
We cover the NFL extensively on FoxSports Upstate, you and I both do
on our shows, the Richmond WeaverShow, a three pm game on at
four pm tune into US. ButI think it's so hard to understand how

(08:31):
hard it is. And you knowthis. You've covered this game for a
long time. You talk to thesecoaches and players every week down here.
It's hard to come right out ofthe gate against a tough opponent with a
new coordinator and sometimes have everything operationallyrunning in sync. Now to that effect,
that was a little unusual to seeit quite that bad. But you've
got that aspect of it. AndI'll come back to the wide receivers.

(08:54):
We've been talking about this for acouple of years now. They've got to
get separation. They've got to beable to get all the jamp and find
their way. Antony Williams seven receptions, fifty six yards. Last week I
talked about Brandon Johnson, the nickelcorner for Duke. He had a good
day against Antonio Williams. I thought, yeah, and they man up and
they're right at the line. Andthese wide receivers, especially out on the

(09:15):
edge, they have to be ableto get some type of separation. And
can Garrett Riley put those players inthose type of positions. And that's what's
going to be interested to see asthe season progresses. And again talking about
Clemson's woeful woes so to speak,in the red zone, just think about
this. The sixteen drives in thelast two games, going back to the

(09:37):
Tennessee game that went inside the opponent'sforty yard line, Clemson has only been
able to score twenty one points onthose drives. Sixteen drives inside the opponent's
forty yard line at two t d's, two field goals and a two point
conversion. Twelve drives inside the fortyof your opponent with zero points, and

(10:00):
that's what Clemson fans are clamoring atright now, just in terms of where
is the offense, where are theshots down field? Where is the movement
to be able to Yes, obviouslyyou're running the ball well. And as
you talked about two hundred yards rushingthere in that game, and then also
over two hundred yards passing, andDabo Sweeney was fifty eight in oh when

(10:22):
the Tigers were able to do that. And how about this, the Tigers
have never lost. They were onehundred and eight and oh when they've been
able to rush for over two hundredand pass for over two hundred and then,
so you combine that with you're outgetting more first downs than Duke.
Time of possession is in your favor. All of those things are in your

(10:45):
favor except the one stat the metricthat counts the most is to scoreboard again,
and obviously it was some of theturnovers, but Duke also had turnovers.
It was just where Clemson's turnovers wereand that was the breaker. And
then obviously the two blocked field goalswere very disappointed from a special teams standpoint,

(11:07):
and we talked about it, John. For upsets in college football,
you've got to have some key turnovers, and then you've got to make some
special teams plays, and Duke didboth of those. We talk about the
middle eight of a game, andyou know, it's a new era too
in football with the clock in collegefootball. It's so fascinating to watch how
that clock does not stop after firstdowns unless you're inside of two minutes,

(11:31):
and that's really affecting some teams inthe flow of their offense. You look
at the middle four of this gameagain, Duke fumbles the football sort of
late there in the first half ona big drive there half of there.
Clemson unable to really get something doneout of that at the end of the
half. And then Duke comes rightout of the gate at halftime a five
place, seventy five yard touchdown drivethat, of course, you know,

(11:54):
just kind of set the tone forthem. Clemson comes right back eight place,
seventy one yard. It's a lotof these Climpson drives to eight plates,
seven plays, nine plays, twelveplays, eleven plays. Part of
the problem with that is number one, you know, you're not getting explosive
plays, as you talked about, and that's a key problem for this team
right now. You gotta get explosives. You gotta get those chunk plays because

(12:16):
the more plays you run, thehigher the opportunity there is to turn the
ball over. It's just numbers,it's a fact. So they ran a
lot of plays. But once youget in the red zone, by the
time you get there, I'm notsaying you're gas but mentally it's just such
a thin margin in the red zones. Operate. You need some twenty thirty
yard touchdowns in this game. AndI think there's also that aspect of those

(12:39):
explosive plays. What does that doto the opposing defense? Yep, it
takes away some of their momentum andthey're giving up those big plays and you
have energy, You have opportunity thenfor even your defense to get energized.
And I've talked to several of defensiveplayers and especially players from the twenty sixteen

(13:01):
team, the twenty eighteen team, where there was times it would be three
plays, four plays and Clempson wouldscore and the defense has to get right
back out there. And so Ihad asked, and especially Ben Bullware talking
to him, and just from theaspect of hey, how is that from
a defensive perspective, you're already gassed? And then your offense scores in two

(13:24):
plays, three plays, and you'reright back out there. And he said,
oh yeah, but when we score, who cares. It's energy.
It's like in basketball when you canbe dead tired and somebody passes you the
ball. You've got the ball. All of a sudden, you're not tired
anymore. And that's what ben BillBullware talked about, is the offense can
actually give the defense energy with quickscores like that. Obviously it's the reverse

(13:50):
though, when you have a turnover, and especially how about when you have
a scenario what you just talked about, these long drives and then you come
up empty and it's a turnout. It's disappointing. It's something you can fix,
I think coach, when he hadtalked about throughout the week, he
stayed optimistic that, look, whenwe're moving the ball as well as we
did, you can go back andpatch up some of the stuff we did.

(14:11):
It's frustrating lost the margin I thinkwas a lot worse than the score.
In reality, the game itself wasmuch closer than the final score.
Yes it was. But at theend of the day, like you said,
the most important stat is scoring points. You get in the red area.
You gotta be able to do it. Yeah, it looked different.
Though it did look different. Dukewas motivated, They seemed very physical,
and so now from a perspective ofhow's Clemson going to respond, Yeah,

(14:37):
and talking with some of the playersthis past week and we've seen some of
the quotes from Dabo Sweeney. Also, remember this is a long season.
This is the first game, andwe've talked about it, John that especially
in football, because there's a finitenumber of games. It's a small number

(14:58):
of games. When you're talking twelveregular season games, and even we talk
about NFL, you've got seventeen regularseason games. The games are obviously magnified,
you know, from that perspective, but you have a lot of the
season still left and it there arethings that you can work on and get
better, and I think we willsee some of that from Clemson. And

(15:20):
even talking with Ruka ro ro Rowthey're on the defensive line. I mean,
it was almost like, hey,Clemson fans, we're okay, we
can We've got you know, don'tbail on us. Now. It didn't
look pretty, but we've got agreat opportunity to get back on track and
can the Tigers do that here today. Obviously against Charleston Southern, this is

(15:43):
a team they should handle easily. So more importantly, will they have the
opportunity of fine tuning some of themistakes that they were able to identify in
that loss against you. It's criticalthat the offensive starters here get some rhythm
going in this game, and Ithink they will. Obviously, this is
a different opponent all respect to CharlestonSouthern. We'll talk more about them later

(16:07):
the show. But how long willthey play? That'll be interesting too to
see how many snaps this offensive groupgets. Defense. I'm not too much
worried about, although there were somemoments in that game where you know,
the mistackle with Riley Leonard getting offthe edge there, and there were some
moments where they're over pursuing their gapsin the run game, but a lot
of that was late in the game. They held their own, I thought,
throughout the game because they have tokept going out in the field after

(16:30):
these turnovers, and as you mentionedearlier, you can handle a three or
four play drive where you're getting points. You see your team go twelve thirteen
plays and come up with nothing,it's hard to keep going back out there
and shutting out a pretty good offensiveduke. It definitely is, and there's
that mental side of it. Iwould also want to see now moving forward,
this Clemson defense feel a little bitmore aggressive. No sacks in this

(16:52):
game. And obviously this defensive line, and there's people talking about this is
easily that defensive line in the country, and then maybe the first or second
in terms of linebacking corps in thecountry also, so you've got not only
there up front, but they're inthe middle, two of the best,

(17:14):
if not the best at both unitsin the country. And you just weren't
able to get any opportunity of reallyputting a whole lot of pressure on Rody
Leonard. Not that he really beatyou too bad in the air, but
he did have the one big playwhere Barrett Carter seemed to have him wrapped
up. And then you hear thecomments from Barrett Carter talking about that he

(17:37):
wasn't in game shape for this firstgame, and maybe you say that and
maybe you don't in terms of publicly, so there's something to be said about
that. But I do believe thatClemson's defense while truly believe Ben but don't
break him Clemson was able to dothat, but they do have to get

(17:57):
some more pressure on some of thesequarterbacks. Well, let's see what happens
today. Clemson disappointed last week,but it's a new week. It's a
short week for Clemson coming off aLabor Day performance, so they're getting back
after it against Charleston Southern. Kickoffat two fifteen PM today. We've got
you covered here on the Ingles TailgateShow. Coming up next. Clemson remains
in the top twenty five for themoment. Let's see if they can keep

(18:18):
that going. But we'll look aroundthe entire top twenty five landscape Richmond as
we got some big time games comingup today. We'll talk about those matchups
later this hour. We'll go throughsome acc headline story to follow if you
will, and then Will Vanderford willjoin us with an inside look. Coming
up at ten fifteen. We gotKillian McClatchey behind enemy Lines, the play
by play voice for Charleston Southern comingup in the ten am hour as well.

(18:41):
I'm John Ellis, that's Richmond Weaver. This is the Ingles Tailgate Show
live from Little John Coliseum. Muchmore next on ninety two point five W
e SC. This is the InglesTailgate Show one two point five e SE.

(19:07):
The sun is shining wife from LittleJohn Coliseum in the Shadows of Death
Valley Memorial Stadium. It is theEngles Tailgate Show. I'm John Ellis.
That's Richmond Weaver coming to you liveon ninety two point five WeSC. Getting
your primed and ready for Clemson's homeopener. I was walking up from media
parking earlier, rich and I gotmy first look at the Tiger Walk,
the new and improved Tiger Walk. That is impressive, my friend, that

(19:30):
is absolutely fantastic. And this wassomething that actually started back in two thousand
and eight when Dabbo Sweeney was namedfull time head coach and he wanted something
a little bit different because it seemedfrom his perspective that it was just very
clunky. How the players just yeah, you come out. You obviously take

(19:52):
the bus around to get on thehill, but just getting to the stadium,
there was no sense of consistency andcamaraderie with the team in preparation of
the game itself. It's just peoplekind of coming in at different times or
groups at you know, at differenttimes. However, it might have been
so let's obviously have an opportunity ofbringing everybody together and coming in unifying front,

(20:18):
so to speak. And then obviouslywe had Tiger Walk, but it
did create some some challenges just fromthe perspective of IPTA people parking down there
and then getting in. And nowthis is much more it's an efficient way,
not inefficient, and efficient way forClemson fans to enjoy that. It

(20:40):
looks fantastic. I know there wassome debate about taking out the trees,
but they planted a lot more trees. So give it some time and they'll
they'll they'll get back to where itwas. But then also just being able
to honor all of the permanent teamcaptains with the plaques out there and the
names, and I know talking withJalen phil whose team was named permanent team

(21:02):
captain last year there in the secondaryand just how he feels knowing that his
name is there, and he wentover there this week took pictures of it.
It's something it's a legacy that youget to honor for some of these
players, and that obviously from thefan perspective, now it's just much more
easier to be able to be apart of that environment. As welcoming the

(21:26):
Tigers to the stadium pre game, and it's it's a welcome psyche to be
back. Calm. I mean, anytime you go. And this is the
thing we talked about last week whenyou go to Duke, they had not
faced that team. A whole lotclimpsit. You go into that awkward environment.
Coach when he talked about even thewalk to the locker room, it
is a bit absurd it Duke. The fact the visiting team has to walk

(21:48):
what across the practice field, it'slike guigs school environment. No, no,
it's the Duke. But but that'swhat you do. It's where the
opposing team it's either giving him likea walk like that or you give him
a locker room. Well, youcan barely fit anybody, there's no air
conditions. Whatever it might be,it was not a Tiger walk. That
was a blue devil lost right. There was not some home cooking you at
home. You try to take anyadvantage that you can to make it a

(22:11):
little uncomfortable for the opposing team. But yes, your point is well taken
there that that was a little much, you know, from that standpoint,
little lot, but no doubt aboutit. Clemson looking to rebound from what
was a bizarre loss. That's allI can tell you, you know from
watching that game, just bizarre. They remain in the top twenty five right
now. Duke has vaulted into thetop twenty five. You look at some

(22:33):
of the big games today. Ofcourse at noon you've got Georgia in Ball
State. That's par for the coursefor Georgia right now. This is how
they schedule early on Ball State ISOand one. Carson Beck looks good,
though again the Stetson Beenett seems likehe was there for ten years and now
he's moving onto the Rams. Now. Georgia going to continue to throttle people
early in the season. Their testwill come eventually. South Carolina looms and
they're not Yeah, they have sleepon them, that's right. They have

(22:56):
South Carolina at home next weekend andthey open up with the Middle Tennessee State
eight and then now with Ball State, so they're not going to be really
tested. So obviously we don't knowGeorgia exactly how they're going to look for
the rest of the season. Andwe can say that for a lot of
teams because you have the ability toget better throughout the course of the season.

(23:17):
But just on paper, we knowGeorge is going to be very good,
there's no denying that, and they'regoing to contend for a another national
championship and do something that's unprecedented. We've never seen a team win three consecutive
national championships in the modern era.Yes, you can go back to the
nineteen thirties with Minnesota, but oneof those national championships for Minnesota was actually

(23:40):
retrospective. They were voted backwards thatoh, yes, you know nice,
Okay, here we go. We'lllook back and statistically speaking, they seem
to be better than anybody else,so we'll give them. We'll crown them
a national chip. We can plainabout we can plain about the current system
so much, but look at them. I think we got it as close
to as perfect as we can get. Right now. With the playoff system,

(24:03):
we're getting closer and closer. Yeah, I still contend I want to
see more of the NFL model.I'm so excited about the twelve team playoff
and the expansion of the college footballplayoff. I think is going to make
this product of college football even better. It's not going to take away from
the regular season. I think it'sgoing to enhance it because I think there's

(24:26):
an opportunity from a scheduling standpoint, these teams will feel more comfortable playing some
other common opponents rather than playing aball state or a Middle Tennessee state.
And this is not disparaging any ofthose programs or Charleston Southern, but from
a fan perspective, don't we wantto see the best of the best to

(24:47):
play each other. Absolutely. That'swhy I would have to say when you
look at the NFL, yes,we can talk about it's a you know,
shorter season than obviously some of theother leagues out there, but we
see great matchups weekend week out.Yea. And college football has the opportunity
to do that once we expand totwelve teams, because one loss is not

(25:11):
going to eliminate you, and eventwo losses once you have the expansion will
not eliminate you because we know rightnow the way the current system is set
up, no team has ever madethe college football Playoff with two losses.
No, they haven't. And whatit leads to, also, like the
NFL, is the same way.Every year you get these fascinating odd matchups

(25:32):
that you oftentimes don't see. Forinstance, you could see maybe on Alabama
versus a, I don't know,Washington, something like that. It would
be just fun little matchups. MichaelPennock's going against mill Row, that would
be fun, right, something somethingdifferent, and you get the home field
advantage with these stadiums. That's justthat's on campus se right. I think
there's way too many positives than thereare negatives in terms of being able to

(25:56):
embrace scheduling in a different way.And I know people can talk about,
well the schedules are you know, setting stone for it's they're scheduled out for
ten years and all of that.Well we saw during COVID they can pivot
pretty quickly. You can do whatyou wanted to do. Can you put
your mind to change some things prettyquickly? From a scheduling standpoint to allah

(26:19):
by U fly into Conway, SouthCarolina two days notice? Forgot about that?
Yes? What can happen? Whata wild year? How about a
wild game here? Coming up sevenpm Eastern on ESPN, Texas visiting Alabama
and a rematch of what was justa dynamic game this time last year out

(26:40):
there in Austin. They go downto Tuscaloosa for this one. No more.
Bryce Young, it's the Milrow Shownow. And of course, Quinn,
you were was sitting there above thedepth chart of Arch Manning playing some
good football. This is gonna bea fun game to watch. Yeah,
we obviously saw last year it wasBryce Young's heroics that won the game for
Alabama because Texas had Alabama. TheRopes had them beat there in Austin,

(27:02):
and they were not able to holdon to it. And but that's what
the great teams do. They somehowfind a way to win. And looking
at this game, I actually thoughtthat the spread might actually been a little
bit bigger. Alabama seven point favorite, and I know it's fluctuated a little
bit, but this is an opportunityfor Texas. Okay, Texas, are
you for real? Can you gointo Tuscaloosa and take care of business?

(27:26):
But calls when I close my eyesand just take a deep breath and just
look at it objectively, and Isay, well, this is Nick Saban,
this is Alabama, and I thinkthey're they feel disrespected right now,
so they always do. I thinkAlabama is going to take care of business

(27:48):
today. I'm not saying that they'regoing to win by three touchdowns, but
I think they will win by morethan seven points. I'm with you on
that, and I think that there'sa different Nick Saban brewing right now,
a gentle nicer. Did you seethis week where he actually apologized to a
young whipper snapper reporter on the beat. I don't have the gentleman's name out
the funny, but there was aclip where Nick Saban was asked a question

(28:11):
after the game, and in hismidweek press conference came back and said,
the kid's name was Austin. Bythe way, Austin, I just want
to say I didn't answer that questionright last week. Let me answer it
for you this time. I've neverheard that from Saban. That's what does
to you. That's what's being agrandfather does to you. Yes, yes,
And you know there is an aspectof one thing that I have seen

(28:33):
from Nick Saban, And that's whyhe's so successful, is that Nick Saban.
And we talk about Nick Saban, and the national narrative seems to be,
Oh, he's so rigid, he'sso stubborn, he's so obstinate.
You know, he's cranky at times, he's an old man. Get off
my lawn, and does it wantto adapt and talks negative about the status

(28:56):
of college football and college athletics andsome of the things that might be true.
But we've all what we've also seenfrom Nick Saban. He does adapt,
he does he's been able to dothat. Look at his offensive adaption,
his adaptation of going from a powerscheme run game and relying on game
managers to now look, I understandif I'm Nick Saban, I got to

(29:18):
go out and get the best thebest quarterbacks, and he's been doing a
Jalen Hurts, Bryce Young to atongue of oola. And now this Millroe
kid looks like he's got the stuff, And I think you have to when
you have staff turnover the way NickSaban has over the years, no doubt,
offensive coordinator changes, defensive coordinator changes, it doesn't matter. There's so
many changes that occur within his program. But what we see on the field

(29:41):
is consistent. Bama is Bama, and that's why I think we'll see Bama
just being Bama today. We gotsome top twenty five ACC games to talk
about here in the next segment, but just a couple of other big games
in the top twenty five. Ofcourse, you imagine Ohio State would look
better against Youngtown State this week thanthey did last week against Indiana. McCord
did not look great. Marvin Harrisononly had two catches in that game.

(30:03):
That's got a change. Penn Statetakes on Delaware coming up at noon,
and then interestingly enough, we'll diveinto the ACC a little bit with this
one. Notre Dame in NC State. Sam Hartman cooking so far six passing
touchdowns and you know the whole storythat David Hill wrote about about the rib.
Yeah, you know he's got therib, the jewelry, the rib,
and he's certainly cracking some ribs outthere himself as a passer and a

(30:26):
runner. That should be interesting. But look, I gotta go all in
big noon Fox game Nebraska Colorado, and I'm gonna shock some people that know
that I've covered the Panthers for afew years and I have a lot of
doubts about Matt Rule as an NFLcoach. I think Colorado got a lot
of people's attention last week, andin this game, I wouldn't put it
past Nebraska to get the win because, look, they've got a very good

(30:48):
defense. Rules a good coach.Rule hasn't had a lot of success against
top twenty five teams. That's theone thing I'll say about that this is
an opportunity for him and his teamto get back on track. I just
don't know about Jeff Simms. He'sgot to take care of that football and
I would know that. And Isay this just that John, We've we've
been watching involved in sports for manyyears and this seems to be one of

(31:14):
those kind of scripts that we're goingto see in sports. Is that,
yes, Dion made a big splashprimetime, all of that, you get
to win on the road, TCU, the nation's going crazy. How is
this possible? And then we couldsee a scenario where Colorado loses the next
four games. That's just the realityof it, it really is. And

(31:36):
so this is a tough test forNebraska. I mean for Colorado when Nebraska
coming in and to your point,we've seen Matt Rule have success on the
college level, so it can bea different scenario there. The thing that
I do question though about Nebraska beingable to win is Colorado when you have
Shador Sanders the talent that he hasand is, and then combine that with

(32:01):
Travis Hunter and just the confidence thatprime Time has, this is going to
be a tough out for Nebraska. But I agree with you. I could
see this happening where Nebraska would winjust because everybody's like, oh, yep,
there we go, Beyon, themagic is here exactly. You see
it like sports, right, youexpect them to be a runaway contender now.

(32:23):
But I'll tell you Colorado, they'vegot some athletes. They're fast,
and they know how to create matchups, and that whole staff is doing a
great coaching job. And it startswith coach Prime. I guess we doubted
them a little bit. Maybe he'llcall us out like he called Edward or
out of the call. He's gothis receipts, right, Oh yes,
we know that we're offering more receiptsand that we didn't pick you to win

(32:45):
out right. There you go,Well, Coach Prime, good job so
far, and best to luck tothem at rule in Nebraska. Today,
we'll dive into the acc outlook comingup. Got some big time games in
that conference coming up and much muchmore as the Engels Tailgate Show rolls on
live from Clemson on ninety two pointfive WSC. This is the Ingles Tailgate
Show on ninety two point five we s C. Now Here are your

(33:09):
hosts, John Alice and Richmond Weaver. We are live from Little John Coliseum,

(33:32):
getting you set primed and ready forClemson's home opener with the brand new
Tiger Walk and a lot of excitementhere in the shadows of Death Valley.
John Ellis, Richmond Weaver. TheIngles Tailgate Show continues on ninety two point
five WSC, brought to you byour good friends at Ingles Low Prices,
Love the Savings, Richmond. I'mseeing a lot of tailgating right in front
of us here in the parking glooda Little John, and I'd imagine a

(33:54):
lot of these folks have stopped bytheir local Ingles, whether it's the one
at Seneca, the one down thereand Clemson here and stock it up.
And it's a great time to beout here with friends and family. Ingles
hands you covered for all that LowPrices, Love the Savings and look,
I'm getting hungry man. Oh it'sa fantastic scene as people are getting all
of their gear set up, andI'm seeing a nice grill right there as

(34:16):
we're on the north side of LittleJohn. So if you're listening, come
on hang out with us. Alittle bit, got some flags that are
starting to fly here. But yeah, so if I'm not back after we
have a break, just know that, yes, I'm out there getting some
food or something. You're gonna puta GPS tracker on Richmond because he's he's
definitely feeling the tailgate vibe right now, as am I, my friend.

(34:38):
This is great. It is atailgate show, a true tailgate show today
this year. We're so happy tobe at the home games at least down
here with Little John to right outside. What gate would this be? Richmond
helped me out. This is onthe north side. It's entrance number two
nineteen. Here. I'm trying toI'll get the exact specific what the entrance

(34:59):
is because they do have different oneslabeled, but I know we're on the
north side of Little John, rightin the center. So come out and
check us out. So we'd loveto have you come up here and talk
to us and let us know yourthoughts about the Tigers. Do How does
the Clemson faithful feel right now?Is it doom and gloom or is it
a scenario of hey, that's ahiccup, We've got time to rebound,

(35:22):
and I am on that side thatyes, when you look at it,
there's a lot to still play interms of this football season, so a
lot that you can work on getbetter. And John, we've talked about
it. Just from a perspective ofthe first game of the season, it's
say level, can't get too high, can't get too low. You know,

(35:45):
the season's not over or the season'snot made based on the first game.
But I also would I'm a realistfrom the perspective of you also have
to be able to look at itobjectively. In the first game doesn't mean
everything, but it's not nothing either. No, there's some things that you
have to be able to pick upon, and that's what the coaches are

(36:06):
doing. Oh absolutely, they're they'reunderstanding that, hey, this doesn't mean
we're going to lose every game, but it also doesn't mean we can't have
the opportunity to win every game forthe rest of the season by being able
to fix some of the mistakes andexecute and play. Because you know,
you have talented guys. Maybe it'snot the same type of talent we've seen

(36:27):
in certain positions from years past, but you still have a very talented roster
and sometimes we've seen even less talentedrosters still be able to win games.
Yeah, it's just about coming togetherand cleaning up some of the operational things
that happened last week at Duke. It's a big game for Clinton to do
that when you look around the ACCright now, we'll get to some of

(36:49):
the storylines under lying some of therecords and scores. But Louisville gets a
big win on Thursday, fifty sixto nothing, and all of a sudden,
Jeff Brohm's got that team looking likeheay a sleepy little contender right now
in this conference, if not thisyear, at least long term. I
know it's certainly. But got thebig win week one against Georgia Tech,
and now they back it up witha fifty six nothing shut out of Murray

(37:10):
State. Yeah. And in thatGeorgia Tech game, and when we saw
a tale of two halves where GeorgiaTech where they scored twenty eight points there
in the first half, and thenLouisville scores twenty six points there in the
second half and be able to getthat victory. And so that's a big
win for Louisville to showcase that offensivelythey might be a little bit different this

(37:31):
year and I know it's against MurrayState. I get all of that,
but to be able to throw upfifty six and then get a shut out
that still speaks something is happening thereat Louisville under head coach Jeff brom sneaky
fun game here coming up. Andthis is an eleven am kickoff on the
a SEC Network two and Oh Vandyat one, and Oh Wake Forrest,

(37:52):
a couple of teams that are seemedto be at least at Vanderbilt. They're
doing a good job of getting thatprogram rebooted a little bit with it literally
under construction the stadium. It's atotal mess and it's gonna look great when
it's done in Nashville. But thisis in Winston liven am kickoff, and
again Dave Clauson flies under the radarfrom a national, national perspective, just
as success he has had at WakeForrest, again winning a SEC Coach of

(38:17):
the Year in twenty twenty one,and knowing that, you know, he
was able to build that team throughdeveloping players and obviously we saw that he
had the quarterback Sam Hartman, whoobviously transferred to Notre Dame. But Mitch
Griffiths is now taking over the helmthere at quarterback and wake Forest again.
It's just a sneaky good team now. And that's why I'm intrigued about this

(38:39):
matchup too, because I do believethat Clark Lee at Vanderbilt is doing some
positive things. Now, how longwould it take to get Vandy up to
you a program that could compete againin the SEC at a true competitive level.
It might take several years, butVandy cee to be in a position

(39:00):
under Clark Lee that they are doingsome positive things. You've got a game,
obviously, if you're Tony Elliott foremotional reasons, the home opener in
Charlottes' Phillipps Scott Stadium today against JamesMadison. And like they said last week,
Tony said it after the game, just to get in the building and
to get out of the building asa team was a winning itself. Yeah,
And I think this is back toback challenges for Tony Elliott from the

(39:22):
emotional side, because it's the lastweek, the emotion of actually just getting
out there and playing again the firsttime since that tragedy, and then now
this is a home game and sothis is the first time you've played at
home and so you've got all ofthese emotions that are still going to be
going on with this team. Andby the way, you had to open

(39:46):
against Tennessee, one of the bestteams in the country. We do know
that. And then now you're anunderdog to James Madison because James Madison is
a legitimate Oh yeah, group offive, they're good team. Team.
A couple more games we're gonna lookat after the break here, but want
to touch on some of the othergames to look for. Boston Collegue hoasting
Holy Cross today. Tough start forBC, let's say if they can get

(40:08):
back on track. Georgia Tech hostingSouth Carolina State. About that one pm
on ESPN Plus. And then anothergame to look out for, Syracuse hosting
a very game Western Michigan opponent.Syracuse is a big favorite in this game.
That's a three thirty kickoff coming uplater on ESPN Plus. We'll talk
about some of the bigger games inthe ACC coming up next as we wrap

(40:29):
up our one of the Eagles tailgateshow right here on ninety two point five
w e SC. This is theEagles Tailgate Show on ninety two point five
w SC. Hopefully the luck willbe better today for Clemson because it was

(40:54):
a good run of bad luck lastweek at Duke as the Clemson Tigers fell
twenty eight seven. It's a newday. The sun is shining right down
Clemson, and it's time to makeyour own luck as they stay down here
in Death Valley, Richmond. Wewere John Ellisbaco the English Tailgate Show,
brought to you live by English LittlePrices, Love the Savings. You know.
I'm all about that, John, optimistic coffee bean mentality. Don't let

(41:16):
the environment impact your mood and bethat coffee being by changing your environment,
just like a coffee bean does whenit changes. It was exposed to hot
water, but it changes the colorof the water. We've got to do
that. And I am at thatpoint too. Is that On our sister
station one to four nine Fox SportsUpstate, I do a segment pick them

(41:38):
and last week I was oh forfive in my pick Hey, oh for
five? So who isn't in weekone? Right? That's why this week
okay, I'm ready five and ohspeaking into existence? My friends? What
the script? As they say.Our our producer Trey Falco back in studio.
He does some radio with us thereon Fox sports upstate, and I

(41:58):
do want to apologize on the airto Tray. I said yesterday on the
show when I was flying solo,I said, hey, I picked the
Lions and Tray picked the chiefs haha. I actually said that the Tray
actually picked the Lions too, Sowe both came out winners. That was
an impressive win in the NFL byDan Campbell getting that win and Mahomes and
company me and they got to getback to work. But back to college

(42:19):
football now, as we're wrapping upour one of the English Tailgate Show Live
from Little John Kylisseum, let's getto the big games. And the big
story in the ACC continues to benot only North Carolina, this is a
big game against a state, butthe status of tes Walker. Obviously he
appeals and Rich I think the universalstatement. I have not heard one person
come out and say that I respectOh good on the inc doable A.

(42:40):
They got that one right, Thatjust feels like one they should They should
have taken a little more time andeffort to look into. But rules as
rules and Tess will not play thisyear for North Carolina. It's heartbreaking story
for him, it really is.And the only people that I have heard
that might not be defending the Ncublea, but at least somewhat in their corner

(43:02):
are other compliance officers at various institutions. Because their point is that, well,
that's the letter of the law, that's the rules, And it was
the head coaches and it was collegeadministrators that were begging for the nc double
A to put some guardrails up,to have some guidelines for this transfer portal.

(43:27):
And then so once they did that, then now it's the people mad
that they're having to enforce a rulethat was put in place. But my
point is that, hey, Ncublea, you're the one who created this mess
in the first place because you droppedthe transfer portal in everybody's lap without any
type of guidelines with you for aperiod of time. And I'm all about

(43:49):
the transfer portal. I want this. And there's also the aspect though that
tes Walker you can look at itfrom obviously, from a technical standpoint,
yes, he was at in NorthCarolina Central and then transferred to Kent State
and then from Kent State to NorthCarolina, and so yes, technically he
transferred twice, but he never playedCentral because their season was canceled because of

(44:14):
COVID and how many COVID rules havebeen in place about getting that extra year,
you would think you could find somesort of loophole there, but obviously
no, not E tes Walker didnot know the rule was going to change
when he decided to transfer to NorthCarolina. Two days after he announced he
was transferred to North Carolina, that'swhen the NC DOUBLEA came out with the
new guidelines in terms of the twotime transfer rule that you had to be

(44:37):
a graduate, so he was notable to be grandfathered in. And it
just makes no sense whatsoever. Andyou could see mac Brown came out swinging
oh Man very hard with the INABA. And that's why I truly believe it's
these type of things to just addmore and more to the frustration of the

(44:58):
NC Double A regular especially college footballand all of the conference realignment that we're
seeing right now. There's going tobe a breakaway. Not saying it's going
to happen in the next two years, but within the next five to seven
years we're going to see these We'regonna see college football breakaway from the NC
DOUBLEA and being its own entity andbe very structured similarly to the NFL decides

(45:23):
at some point to invest in thatinstan system. Why not like the old
NFL Europe. I mean, it'sas silly thought in theory, but hey
makes some sense. So say NorthCarolina takes on app State. Look there's
some history here. I mean, don't count out the Mountaineers here. They
could pull this thing off. Yousaw last year what happened. We saw

(45:44):
app State score sixty one points againstNorth Carolina but loses sixty three to sixty
one in that game, and youhad sixty two total points scored in the
fourth quarter of that game. Absolutelyinsane. But App State this is par
for the course for them. Inturn, they've always been that team.
And you can harken back all theway to two thousand and five in the

(46:04):
Big House against Michigan. The bigupset. Stop scheduling these guys early if
you're a big time top twenty fiveteam. But I'm okay with this because
I want to see some of thesematch times because I do believe that app
State. And again, I'm notsure the app State team this year roster
wise, is the same as lastyear. But for whatever reason, App
State plays really well against North Carolina. They certainly do big came at three

(46:29):
thirty PM. As you've got JimboFisher and Bobby Petrino hand in hand.
All is well right now with theplay calling. But we're one weekend and
this is a Mario Christopaul Upset specializedthing. To me, I'm feeling the
love down there in Miami. They'reunderdogs in this game. It's down there
at hard Rock Stadium. Again,Ay, and M's an impressive team,
but I think this could be thegame that Miami gets their momentum going with

(46:50):
this program. It's gonna be aheck of a game no matter what.
Well we saw last year that Miamiwas also close, but you had the
injury with Tyler Van Dyke. Canhe be help for this entire game?
And again, what do we knowabout Texas A and M. We continue
to prop Texas A and M,in my opinion, unfairly saying that they're

(47:10):
so good and what have they reallydone? Not much? Not much?
They really have it, so Iwould this is a big test for Jimbo
Fisher and I know again he hadsome games last year that like the Alabama
game that they played well and almostwon. But I still not buying into

(47:30):
all of the hype with Texas Aand M each and every year. No,
you gotta prove it first. It'sa big time step for them.
Duke takes on Lafayette to night numbertwenty one rank. Dukes say that three
times fast. They're climbing up thecharts. A big game for them.
And then Florida State shout out toMelissa Level, our good friend from Ingles,
the director of advertising marketing. They'retaking on Southern Miss and they've got
the longest streak in the country rightnow, thirty five plus point games.

(47:53):
I would imagine this would be anotherone right now. It's Florida State is
cooking at the moment, and FloridaState looks different and we've seen in the
past. But Southern Miss, we'llsee what happens. Former Clemson quarterback Billy
Wilds down there be transferred, sosee how that plays out. Southern Miss
another sneaky team, but I thinkFlorida State will handle business very in an

(48:14):
easy way. As we mentioned earlier, Notre Dame number ten in the country.
Take it on. NC State, another team that struggled a little bit
early on in the season against Yukon. Big time opportunity for Dave Dorrian in
that program to get a big winover a team. I think in Notre
Dame that they found their quarterback. Finally they've got their guy, and that's
a dangerously good team this year NotreDame as they move forward into the ACC

(48:36):
schedule, we move forward in thehour two. Coming up next, we
got Will Vandervoort joining us. Comingup at about ten fifteen, we've got
Killian McClatchy, the voice of CharlestonSouthern Athletics, joining us behind in me
lines later and Rich and I willof course dive into some history for Clemson
football. Coming up next on theEnglish Tailgate Show Live from Little John Collins
CUM ninety two point five, WSCninety two point five to E S E

(49:00):
AM and FM Greenville, Spartanburg Anderson. We're talking Clemson Tigers and getting you
ready for a college football Saturday. And this Ingles Tailgate Show is brought to
you by Ingles Markets, Low Prices, Love the Savings, Blue Ridge Electric
Cooperative, Harley Davidson of Greenville CareerFlooring Center, the Surgery Center at Pelham

(49:22):
McKee Heating and Air, and PalmettoState Armory. Right now here are your
hosts, John Ellis and Richmond Weaver. We're back live from Little John Coliseum
in the shadows of Death Valley. We got the brand new Tiger Walk out
here. We've got so much excitement. You would imagine after a week one

(49:45):
performance that Clemson had, all thedoubters are going to be out there,
all fans are going to the transferportal. Not so fast, my friend,
as Lee Corso would say, thefans are out here in full force.
There tailgating. We're tailgating with youon the Engles Tailgate Show right here
on ninety two point five WeSC I'mjoined by my co host Richmond Weaver and
having a good time out here.Look, we expected some bad weather.

(50:07):
It's still could happen. To theforecast. They're calling for some possible storms
later in the afternoon, possibly aroundtwo or three o'clock, so it'll be
aware of that. But right now, it's a beautiful morning. We have
a great time out here, beautifulmorning. The wind is starting to blow
right now, so maybe that issome of that weather, but we can
feel it. We can feel thebreeze coming through and I'm excited about that

(50:27):
because earlier this morning, when wefirst got here, it was a little
steamy, it was a little hot. The sun was shining a little bit
more. Now it's nice, brightsunshine right now. But we do have
some clouds kind of rolling in andmaybe we can get a little bit of
that break with the cloud cover. But it is a beautiful day here and
Clemson the home opener for the twentythree season. So a lot to be

(50:50):
excited about, a lot to behopeful and optimistic about. I know,
yes, you have the Duke loss, but you got to put that aside,
and talking with some of the playersthis past week, I mean they
have the mindset that, yeah,it was disappointing, give Duke a lot
of credit. They played well.We made some mistakes, but now this
is our opportunity to turn the pageand get better. And that's what you

(51:13):
want each and every week. It'shard to be perfect. It is hard
to be pervery game. It's hard. And you have to realize too that
other team they're trying to beat youalso, and winning is hard. John,
We keep talking about it, andI'm not trying to discredit and make
light of the loss against Duke.Obviously, you know that was eye opening,

(51:36):
but sometimes you need those wake upcalls to a certain degree, and
maybe this was Clemson's wake up call. And now you have two weeks to
prepare in terms of against opponents thatyou should be able to take care of
pretty handily, and knowing that you'vegot that game September twenty three against Florida
State with the Seminoles come rolling in. But a word of caution, and

(51:59):
you know, John and I've heardthe coaches already talking about it, You've
got to worry about to the opponentin front of you. Don't do not
be looking ahead down the calendar.No. One of the staples of success
here with this program has been theability to have, as we've talked about,
the windshield mentality, looking forward, not backwards, and certainly not looking

(52:19):
too far forwards either. So it'sreally a play to play proposition the way
I'd look at it if I'm oneof those coaches, and we've talked to
these coaches throughout the college landscape, throughout the NFL landscape, they get so
zoned in on watching the game filmand watching the tape on just things that
we don't even think about as fans. It's broadcasters. They're looking at this

(52:40):
one play at a time, andI think that's where it starts today.
This is not a tune up game. This is not a scrimmage. This
is an actual game at Death Valley, the season opener here at home at
least, and it gives them anopportunity to get the fan base rejuvenate.
But more importantly too, if you'regonna call it a tune up, yeah,
let's tune up some things operationally thatweren't great last week. Let's not

(53:01):
fumble the ball twice inside the redzone. Let's try to get some separation
on the boundary there and get someconfidence going for Bo Collins, for Antonio
Williams. Let's give Shipley maybe afew more carries than he had, although
he had a lot, maybe youcan feed him a little more. And
let's see if kay Klubnick, aguy we haven't mentioned in the show yet
today, really at all get himsettled in a little bit with this new

(53:22):
offensive structure, because he looked alittle bit up and down in that game
in terms of comfort zone. Ithink you said the keyword right there,
settled. He looked unsettled at times, and I think that's what was surprising,
knowing that we've seen some boys fromhim in the action that we saw
last year, and we're hoping thatwe would see that for the entire game.
In that duke game, he justseemed to be unsettled at times and

(53:45):
a little bit of panic that youcould sense from the perspective of just his
body language and just the frantic typeof day he was having. So,
yes, do you have that opportunityof getting him settled. And he's still
learning this scat Riley offense and Iknow, so there's some principles that are
the same from last year, butit is a little different and it might

(54:07):
take you know, a few gamesto really get in that rhythm, because
it's one thing to be able todo it in practice. And as we
know, John, you can tryyour best to replicate games and practice,
but nothing is the same as gamespeed and knowing that, hey, the
opponent, they're they're doing some differentthings that you might not have seen.

(54:30):
It's an adage that I learned along time ago from a coach named John
Fox I used to cover in Carolinawho's now, by the way, an
assistant with the Detroit Lions with AnnCampbell. And he said, hey,
guys, they practice too, theyget paid too, and so they credit
to Duke and Mike Elko, whata heck of a job. And maybe
they'll meet again at some point, you know, down the road. We'll
see what happens with Duke and Clemson. Right now, it's all about today's

(54:52):
game against Charleston Southern. Will talkmore about them, go behind into the
lines later this hour with Killian McClatchy, the voice of Charleston. So in
athletics. We got Will Vanderborg comingup at about ten minutes Will of course
from the Believe in Clemson Football podcastwith Von Kirkland. But first the segment
I love every single week. It'stime to look at the history here of

(55:13):
what happened on this day. Sireup the Dolorean. Time to take a
trip down memory lay we're going. We don't leave road. It's OTD on
this day and Clemson football history. Here's Richmond Weaver. Okay, September the

(55:34):
ninth, Yes, a little bitof a hot one out here, but
that is okay. We love someof these warmer temperatures here in September.
Let's walk back in history, goingback to nineteen eighty nine, and this
is something I remember vividly because Iwas a freshman here at Clemson and this
was a matchup that was a landmarkvictory for the Tigers at Florida State,

(55:58):
as they would beat the Seminoles thirtyfour to twenty three, as the Tigers
jumped out to a twenty one nothinglead led by an interception return for a
touchdown seventy three yards by Wayne Simmons, and Wayne Simmons rest in peace.
Obviously, Wayne Simmons, that linebackercould ball. He had that dog in
him. He's one of those guysabout that dog in him. He had

(56:22):
that dog, Yes he did.And one of the great running backs in
Clemson history, Terry Allen, hada seventy three yard touchdown run in that
game, and that victory moved Clemsonto number seven in the AP pole and
it was the last loss of theseason for Florida State, who eventually ended
the season ranked number three in thenation by the AP and number two by

(56:43):
the defunct UPI. At the WowYes the UPI exactly on this. In
two thousand, Clemson would beat Missourisixty two to nine at home, and
it was the school's highest point totalsince nineteen eighty one at that time,
and Brian Manz had three takeaways injust sixteen defensive snaps about three turnovers because

(57:08):
he took two three turnovers in justsixteen plays. That's a good ratio right
there. I can do the mathon that. That'll work all right.
And then in two thousand and seventeen, I know a lot of Clemson fans
remember this one. In a battleof outstanding defenses, Clemson defeated Auburn for
the fourth time in a row witha fourteen to six victory. Clemson recorded

(57:30):
eleven sacks, it's second most inschool history and most against an FBS school,
and Austin Bryant led the way withfour sacks as Clemson allowed negative fifteen
rushing yards and just twenty five totalyards in the second half against the only
team to beat the eventual national championAlabama in two thousand and seventeen. And

(57:55):
so there you go for the Tigers. And on this date, September the
ninth, Clemson is four and twoall time in games on this date.
And we would be remissed if wedidn't also acknowledge that. Unfortunately, on
this date thirty year, twenty yearsago, excuse me, and Jim Phillips,
the voice of the Clemson Tigers forthirty six years, would die suddenly

(58:19):
in the early morning hours. AndPhillips had served as obviously the voice and
we say play by play announcer forfootball and men's basketball since nineteen sixty eight
and also did some baseball and women'sbasketball for many years. And he worked
four hundred and one Clemson football gamesin his career and as the season opener

(58:42):
in two thousand and three against Georgiawas his four hundredth and his final game
was the Clemson Furman game on Septembersixth, and unfortunately lost him too early
there Voice of the Clemson Tigers,Jim Phillips, Well, that was a
great OTD in a great way toend it, because Jim Phillips middle to
you and I both in terms ofbroadcasters, as Clemson aficionados, as a

(59:04):
fan yourself as a guy who wentto this university. That was the time.
We always talked to Don Munson fromtime to time on our shows here
on Fox Sports Upstate in on Nattytwo point five WSC, and he always
tells us, I am not thevoice of the Clemson Tigers, I am
the director of broadcasting. Jim Phillipsis the voice and it rings true to
me too. I remember early inmy broadcasting career being around my dad,

(59:25):
Bill Ellis, who works for Whistleone hundred. Jim Phillips would always be
around the building up there at theold Whistle one hundred fourteen forty am as
well, this old sports station theyhad, and Don Munson was there as
well. And to see those twoguys back then, to think one day
Don would eventually replace Jim in thatcapacity, it's certainly great to reflect back
on. Jim was a kind heartand he certainly with that booming voice,

(59:51):
made so many great memories for allof us here at Clemson, of course,
and that's why it's do have tohonor him on this date. Again,
that past too soon, but serveto this university extremely well, and
it was able to help a lotof people create a lot of memories of
Clemson athletics and especially with Clemson football, no doubt about it. One of

(01:00:15):
the great voices of college football.Great rest in peace, Jim Phillips.
Hey, I'll tell you this.Let's move on to the series history there
is done every week first time theyplayed, and that's interesting in itself because
you know, unfamiliar territory for CharlestonSouthern. Obviously, we'll talk more about
that with Killy and Clatchy coming up. He's the voice of that team at

(01:00:36):
about ten thirty five today. Butit's just odd to play a team for
the first time. It's an oddenvironment. And look what Clemson needs to
establish here. I think in manyways after the loss to South Carolina last
year is just dominance at home.Let's just assess ourselves, check the film,
and come back to work and beready to absolutely dominate this game.

(01:00:57):
No offense to Charleston Southern. Thereshould be a game at home in Death
Valley that Clemson typically never loses. It shouldn't even be close. But Charleston
Southern's playing hungry new head coach.Fascinating story about him. We'll get too
with killing Clatchy as well as theycalled him the Rudy of the Alabama football
post. Yes, and now thatand Charleston Southern will be the one hundred

(01:01:20):
and eight different opponent Clemson has facedall time, and Clemson holds a sixty
five, thirty eight and four alltime record when facing an opponent for the
first time. There you go.So there's some good stats there that Clemson
should be able to make that sixtysix wins against an opponent for the very
first We liked that kind of math. That's good math. We've got a

(01:01:44):
tailgate and break it out in frontof us here. We've got Clemson fans
right in our front lap here throwinga football around. We're out here at
Little John Coliseum. Join us forthe next forty five minutes or so,
wrapping up the Ingles Tailgate Show thishour. We've got Will Vandervoort on the
line coming up from the Clemson inor he'll join us in a few minutes
with an inside look at Clemson footballand behind enemy lines. Coming up with

(01:02:05):
Killian McLatchy from Charleston Southern. Andwe'll put a bow on this thing.
Coming up later this hour with ourpicks for this game. That's Richmond Weaver.
I'm John Ellis. This is theEngles Tailgate Show, live from Little
John Coliseum in the shadows of DeathValley. This is gonna be a great,
great day for Clemson football. We'reback with more after this on ninety
two point five WSC. This isthe Engles Tailgate Show on ninety two point

(01:02:29):
five w E. S C.Now Here are your hosts, John Alice
and Richmond Weaver as we roll onwith much more here live from Clemson Little

(01:02:54):
John Colosseum. It is the InglesTailgate Show Live on ninety two point five
w E. S C. Gotmuch more to get to here in the
next forty five minutes or so,a full tailgate has broken out in front
of us. I love this ritual. We got some of our good friends
here from Clemson, just fans thatare ready to get after sitting their chairs
up right here here in our broadcastarea, which is fine because we're in

(01:03:15):
their space. Pretty much we are. We have infiltrated into their space and
we apologize. But I love someof the chairs with their rockers. These
chairs say yeah, I love that. I'm ready to go run some routes
here. We got a father andson playing, so right here, Rico,
you're feeling it. Let's go throwthat ball over the mountains. Tell
a guy that could throw that ballover the mountains in his day, I

(01:03:37):
would assume would be the great WillVandervoort. He comes to us from the
Clemson Insider. He's also the cohost of The Believing Clemson Football podcast and
he joins us as he does everyyear, with the inside look at Clemson
football. How are you doing,Will Vandervoort. I'm doing good. I
couldn't throw the ball over the mountain. I was more of a triple option
kind of guy. So you know, the run the power eye. That's

(01:03:58):
what we did. Dirt Raid Will, that's your new nickname, dirt grade
Will. As we're gonna talk alittle bit about what happened last week,
Let's start with that. You werelive from the stadium, Wallace Wade up
there and Duke and you got towitness that game up close and personal.
You covered that game. I willsay I did listen to your podcast with
Levon Kirkland believing Clemson football. Iwould highly recommend those out there Clemson fans

(01:04:20):
listened to it. I think Ieven left a few comments for you,
just to kind of jab at whatwas going on. But what an odd,
bizarre football game, Will, Andall the years I've watched football,
and I think I echo your sentimentson that, I haven't seen so many
collective issues come together in one halfof football as they did in that second
half. Talk about your first impressionsof what you saw there. It was

(01:04:42):
weird. I mean that's really theonly way. I mean, I probably
will never see that again, andeither were you in your lifetime. I
mean I've been around this game myentire life, you know, and I've
never seen anything where one team withyou know, three times drove inside the
five yard line and did not scoresingle point two block field goals. I
mean, it was nuts. Ijust something I've never seen happened before.

(01:05:06):
You know, Clemson easily could havebeen in control of that game in the
third quarter, and you just yousaw and after Duke went up thirteen seven,
Clemson gets the ball, goes downto the field and you're thinking,
okay, well here comes Clemson. They're gonna be Clempson out and they just
go down to field like it wasnothing. They get into that to that
one yard line and it's like okay, it's like a stone wall just goes

(01:05:26):
up and they can't get they couldn'tcross over it. And we saw the
same thing in the Tennessee game, which is weird that now you've had back
to back games where Clemson has juststruggled scoring when they've gotten down in those
scoring opportunities, and that's something that'sgot to be concerning because one time it
happens, you're like, Okay, maybe everything's you know, just one of
those nights. Two times it happenskind of a trend, and I think

(01:05:49):
that's something even though it's a newcoordinator and you gotta but you still got
the same quarterback, and you gotthe same offensive line and running backs,
and so I don't know, maybeit's they're in our own heads now,
you know, maybe that's what theproblem is. An inside look with Will
Vanderboard as we continue right here onthe Engles Tailgate Show on ninety two point

(01:06:10):
five WSC Will Vanderboard from the ClemsonInsider and Will Richmond Weaver here. And
so the question that I have alsowhen you talk about Garrett Riley, the
new offensive coordinator, is just interms of did we set the expectations too
high in terms of what he wasgoing to be able to do in terms

(01:06:31):
of quote unquote turning around this offensein the very first game, And is
that, you know, putting toomuch on just the change of offensive coordinator
because it does take time for theoffense to jail and get into a rhythm.
Now obviously, you know, havingthe turnovers from that perspective only magnifies

(01:06:55):
some concerns. But again, didwe put too much expectations on that this
offense would look radically different in thefirst game, Yes, you say yes.
And the first of all, Ithought, overall, he adjusted well
like in the second half, andyou saw how Clemson was running the football

(01:07:15):
and moving the ball down the fieldbetter than they were doing in the first
half. So I would say,you saw some adjustments by Garrett Riley,
and he made them, and heand you know, they just didn't execute
when they got down there. Butthat's not on him, that's on the
players. Garrett Riley didn't bumble thefootball right, Garret Riley didn't miss that
rock. Garrett Riley didn't drop thatpass or fall over the eight yard line.

(01:07:36):
You know that wasn't Garrett Riley doingthose things. He put them in
position to be successful. So Iwould say, you know, over four
hundred yards you had two hundred, two hundred showed balance. For the most
part, I thought he called agood game. The part that people probably
don't like are the screen passes.Yes, but I just want people to
understand understand your wide receivers. Youdon't have Mike Williams out there. You

(01:07:59):
don't have te Higgins out there. He's got to get him, he's got
to get the balls. He's justtrying to do what he can. So
people aren't stacking the box and justseeing on will Shipley and Phil MafA.
So you know, it is whatit is. You'd like to see Clemson
go a little more vertical, ButI don't blame that on Garrett Riley.
I blame that on the personnel. And since this is his first year,
that's not Garrett Riley's fault. Andso will with that in terms of the

(01:08:23):
personnel, And yes, there isa difference there that again, Garrett Riley's
not out there making the plays. And so is there something to be said
that in terms of Clemson, especiallyfrom that wide receiver standpoint, you don't
have the Mike Williams of the worldor the Justin ross Is the t Higgins
and but you have some guys thatwere highly talented coming out of high school,

(01:08:46):
Adam Randall, Bo Collins, thesetype of guys as Clemson might just
be in a scenario where these guysjust aren't living up to their hype and
maybe they've missed at the wide receiverposition in terms of what these guys are
able to accomplish. Yeah, Ithink I'm not gonna blame it all on
the players, because you know, there is coaching that's involved too. I

(01:09:11):
think it's both. I think they'vemissed on some and then I think some
guys just haven't developed. And whenit's guys aren't developing, I don't blame
that necessarily on the player. Iblamed that on coaching. And so for
whatever reason that's not happening. I'mnot saying there should be any changes or
anything like that. I'm just pointingout of fact, and a fact right
now is they haven't developed a widereceiver the last four or five years.

(01:09:33):
And you're seeing that, and you'vehad guys that have transferred out and they're
maybe I don't know, you know, obviously missed on those guys. So
I think it's a combination of both. I'm not just gonna blame it just
on players. I think, youknow, you gotta put some on the
coaching as well. Will Shipley isa big part of what makes this offense

(01:09:54):
go. We're talking to Will Vanderboardand Inside Look with Will Vanderboard from The
Climpson Insider and I heard you guyson the podcast as talking about Shipley and
then some of your observations of youknow, obviously I frustrated Will Shipley after
the Duke game. Everybody was frustrated. I'm sure after what happened down in
the red zone. Where is hismindset right now with this offense? Obviously
he's a team leader, He's oneof the best running backs of the country.

(01:10:17):
Are they using him to his liking? Do you think is there any
frustration with the staff between Shipley andthe coaching staff. Is it more just
the fact that they went up operationallyagainst Duke and just botched opportunities inside the
red zone? Well, you know, that's a good question. You know
I personally my thing is you gotto get Will Shipley the ball as much

(01:10:42):
as possible. I think he needs. You know, he had twenty three
touches. That's good. I thinkWill Shipley needs twenty five tiries As a
running back, he needs twenty fivetiries. We've seen that you can do,
that has been done before. Ithink people overstress. Oh well,
we don't put too much stress onhim, And to me, twenty five
carries is not over stressing a runningback. When you get the thirty carries.

(01:11:03):
Yeah, that's stressing a running back. I think twenty five carries he
needs to get in that range. He had seventeen carries or one hundred fourteen
yards last week, average six pointsix yards per carry. Why are you
doing anything else if that's happening, you know? I mean that, It's
just that simple to me. Ithink sometimes coaches can overthink things, but

(01:11:24):
you know what, just just givethe ball to number one, let him
do it. He was frustrated lastweek, and I don't think he was
frustrated because of lack of carries oranything like that. I think I don't
think that's why he was frustrated.I think he was frustrated with his teammates.
And I think that's what I sawwas will Shipley. And that's a
good sign because he'll get hell. He's a guy that people, the players,

(01:11:45):
teammates will listen to, they respect, and so if he's mad and
angry, he's gonna get his teammatesmad and angry, and that'll be good.
That's good for Clemson because they needthat. They need that dog.
If you will kind of get inthe teammates faces and let him know,
hey, guys, were here towin. We're not here to lose the
duke. You can't lose the dukeif you're Clemson. I mean, that's
the thing. Well, it's nodisrespect to Michael cool. We can have

(01:12:06):
this conversation and say, you knowwhat, congrats to Mike Yelko. They're
building a legitimate program. But ifyou're Clemson and you start eight and oh
last season, and will the standI heard from you and others, what
are they three and four in thelast seven after that eat? No start
three and four? And the commonthen, guys, is they turned the
ball over a bunch of those threedays. They've pulled the football over,

(01:12:29):
and in three of those losses theyhave physically been dominated when it matters most
in the second half against Notre Dame. We saw that. You saw that
against Tennessee in the bowl game, and you saw that the other night against
Duke and the fourth quarter Duke ranfor eighty five yards. Okay, guys,
eighty five yards in the fourth quarteraverage seven point four yards per carry.
Duke did that Clemson. The Clemson'sdefense is supposedly supposed to be the

(01:12:54):
best in the country. I'm tiredof hearing that. I think those guys
need to shut up and just gothrough with everybody. Strong words from Will
Vanderboard, but speaking the truth isalways from the Clemson insider. And I
think another common theme as well.We got to talk defense in a minute,
but let's talk special teams. Andthree of those losses go back to
Notre Dame, go back to SouthCarolina. Here at home Debacca and the

(01:13:15):
big Palmidable whatever you want to callit these days in Death Valley. And
of course last week, special teamshad a big hand in these losses,
did they not? No? Absolutely, we had three missfield goals against Tennessee.
You had the fumble punt, muffpunt again, the fumble punt against
George South Carolina. Also the specialteams kickoff fumble, and you had,

(01:13:36):
you know, against Notre Dame, you had some special teams funders. So
yeah, I mean that's been acommon theme too. It kind of all
works out that way, right,I Mean, these things don't happen by
accident, you know what I'm saying. I think there's issues, there's things
that gotta get coached up and corrected, and you know, and I think
Dabo and then Will do that,I think, right, now there's especially

(01:13:58):
with the kicking game. I thinkthat's a head thing, man, And
when a kicker gets in his ownhead, yeah, it's like a baseball
picture. It's like just the twoworst people that get Once they get in
their head, there's nothing you cando about it. Yeah, it is
very mental and it's going to beinteresting to watch with the absence of BT
Potter, who, by the way, had a cup of coffee. I
believe with your Steelers in the preseason. If I'm not mistaken, he moves

(01:14:20):
on. He did, He's he'smissed down here. Robert Gunn's gonna be
great, I think, but yougot to get out of your own head
and get to get those kicks alittle more elevated. Defensively. You guys
made the point on your podcast aswell about West Goodwin. Look, this
is a big year for him interms of the structure and the advancement of
this defense. They still have alot of talent up front, and that

(01:14:41):
secondary I think is much improved. You guys made the point you and Lavan
both should maybe West b upstairs witha bird's eye view since he and a
lot of views out there, includingmine. He's more of a strategist than
perhaps maybe a Brent Venival's motivator.Would he better be better served perhaps up
in the who's getting a better viewof the field. Absolutely, totally,

(01:15:03):
totally think that's what he should bedoing. I mean the reason I say
that is I think West sees thefield so good up there. Look at
it this way. The great chessplayers, right, they look at the
whole board. That's what makes themso good, right, Well, that's
what West is in football. He'sa chess player. I think he's better
up top because he can see thewhole field and see everything that's going on.

(01:15:24):
When y're on the field, youonly see parts of it. It's
harder to see, as Levon says. And look, Levon was a defensive
coordinator. He at this level,he understands, you know, what it's
like coaching on the field and howyou see the field. And so he's
speaking from his own experience and knowing. Also he knows Wes. He worked
with them at Arizona. You know, he understands how west brain works.

(01:15:45):
And West's brain is still one ofthe best defensive brains I've ever seen in
my life. Trust me, theguy knows what he's doing. I think
it would serve him and Clemson betterthough, if he was upstairs relaying it
to Mickey Kahn and Mickey Khan callingAnd I know he said that he's concerned
about communication and all that, butthat didn't seem to mess Brent Vinables up
when he was calling the plays downthe Brent Vinables and telling Brent Vinables what

(01:16:08):
what everything looked like. And thenyou know, of course coach v was
calling the plays. But West playeda good part in, you know,
letting West, letting Brent know whatwas going on from upstairs level. So
I think maybe West is better thanMickey Khn at that and I think that's
probably where some of the issues liein my opinion. Nothing against Mickey Kahn.
I think it's a good coach,but you know, maybe he's better
on the field. Maybe they justneed to switch it. That's just a

(01:16:29):
thought. An inside look with WillVanderboard as we're continuing here on the Engles
Tailgate Show and right here on ninetytwo point five, w SC and Will
looking now you've got to turn thepage from the Duke game and whatever the
questions are, can you work thingsout? What are you wanting to see

(01:16:50):
here? Against an opponent where weknow this is an opponent that, on
paper everything doesn't have the athletes tocompete with Clemson. But what are you
looking for for Clemson here to reboundfrom that loss against Duke. Yeah,
I mean I think they need tocome out and just show their dominance right
away, get some confidence for thisoffense. I think that's important. I

(01:17:15):
want to see on the on thedefensive side, I want to see take
them take ownership. I want tosee I want to see this defense kind
of work together. We haven't seenthat in a while from them, you
know, go out there and dominatelike they know they can, and be
this kind of team and offense thatcan really just I mean defense that can
really just take over a game andwork together. I think collectively, we

(01:17:38):
haven't seen that from the Clemson defensewhere they've worked together as a unit.
Individually they got great stats, collectivelythey don't. I think that defense needs
to start working together and I thinkbring that energy and of course they'll feed
off the crowd in Death Valley thatthere there's no doubt. But since the
Miami game last year, we reallyhaven't seen that from the Clemson defense,

(01:17:58):
you know, and so I wantto see that kind of defensive performance today.
Go pitch a shutout. I'm gonnabe very mad if Clemson gets Charleston
a Southern point. I'm gonna bevery mad. I'm a defensive guy.
You guys know that, and I'llbe mad if they allow Charleston Southern to
score on them. I don't careif it's a fumble return for a Touchdow,
I'm gonna be mad about it becausethat shoudn't happen against Charleston Southern.

(01:18:19):
So you know, I'm gonna bemad if they don't pitch a shut out
today because they can and they shouldpitch a shutout. And offensively, I
think Dabbo needs to keep Kate pluddNick in there as long as he can.
I think they need to play throughthe third quarter because they need the
reps. They need to get thatconfidence to see that they can do it.
I know people say, well it'sagainst SCS team, well, but

(01:18:40):
they need that. They need toscore against guys like me so they can
feel good because they you know yousometimes you just need that shot of confidence,
right, So I'm kind of lookingfor that for the offense to go
out there and be explosive, makesome plays and start feeling good about themselves,
because guys, two weeks from today, they ain't gonna be easy.
That's no, it's gonna be alittle tougher a couple of weeks from now

(01:19:03):
when old Mike Norville sands the Dreadlocks. I saw that picture the other week
with the corn Rows. He'll he'llbe clean cut, ready to go with
a clean cut team, as always. Will Vandervoort from the Clemson Insider and
the co host of the Believe inClemson Football podcast with Inside. Look,
you're too kind to make time asalways, my friend, and we'll talk

(01:19:24):
you down the road. And goodluck to your Steelers tomorrow as they take
on Brock Purty and the forty Niners. By the way, I just want
to mention I picked the Steelers togo to the super Bowl on game on
Fox Sports up State Steelers forty nineor super Bowl This say super Bowl one
of you tomorrow, my friend, mark it down. Hey, hey,
are we playing the Cowboys right?Risven? I want the Cowboys throwing the

(01:19:45):
clock back on that one from nineteenninety five. Other boys, We'll see
you later, will, Thanks forjoining us, man, all right,
guys have always Thanks man, I'vetaught you later. Thanks you always.
It's Will Vanifort with an inside lookfrom the Clemson Insider. He's always a
hoo. Coming up next, agreat conversation with our good friend Killian McClatchy.
He is the voice of Charleston SouthernAthletics as we go behind enemy lines.
Some great stories about that program.New head coach with a fascinating background.

(01:20:10):
You want to hear this coming upnext, and then Rich and I
will return with our picks for thisgame. This is the Ingles Tailgate Show,
brought to you by Ingles Low Prices, Love the Savings live right here
on ninety two point five WSC.It's time to go behind enemy lines.

(01:20:31):
I'll close our look and Clemson's opponentwith our special weekly guest with us scoop
on what the Tigers we'll face thisweek. Let's get the four one one.
Here's John Allens and we're back onthe Ingles Tailgate Show, getting you
primed and ready for Clemson's home openeragainst Charleston Southern. Coming to your live
here from the Shadows of Death Valley. Joining us now behind enemy lines as

(01:20:57):
we do every single week, takinga look at the opposing team. It's
the play by play voice for CharlestonSouthern, Killian McClatchy, on the Ingles
Hot Line. How you doing,Killian, Thanks for joining us man,
Pretty good, Hey, looking forwardto it. Thanks for having me on,
y'all looking forward to looking forward tothe good football game. Yeah,
it should be great Clinston, ofcourse, coming off a disappointing loss.

(01:21:17):
But let's focus in on what thisCharleston Southern team is all about right now.
A big time win and to openup the season. You've got a
new coach and Gabe Gardinia, whoI believe Chris Fowler once referred to as
the Rudy of the Alabama football program. He was a former kicker for that
team. Let's just start with him. The head coach, obviously, Audrey
Denson. I got to know hima little bit when I called some games

(01:21:39):
down there. And now you're movingon to a new era. What kind
of energy has he brought to thisCharleston Southern program. Coach Cardinia, he's
really brought it's just kind of Imean, it's a different attitude, it's
a different mentality. I mean, this team. One of his big lines
is. He kind of came inand it was really when we saw the

(01:22:00):
two deep that came out last weekfor a Week one, we kind of
saw some names like oh, itwasn't really expecting that to be there.
And he really went into it withkind of an open and open mindset and
open book. Really like the Fallcamp and you know, Fall Spring and
leading into the season kind of dictatewhere it went. I think he's just
it's brought a new life. He'sa really energetic guy. He cares a
lot about this university. Is itactually believe it's a Stord stint with Charleston

(01:22:25):
Southern obviously his first as the headcoach. He spent the last five years
at Albany State and they you knowhe was successful there and you know,
I think he's going to get thisprogram. There's a Key's the guy that
can kind of help this program takethe next step and start really pushing forward.
We'll see how it goes this season. Obviously, Week one playing against
North Greenville, a Division two teamthat they really truthfully, they struggled against

(01:22:47):
that North Greenville team. And don'tget me wrong, it's a it's a
solid offense. North Greenville puts together, but they just it wasn't the cleanest.
But coach Gardinia said at the bestin his postgame chat, he said,
look, a win is a win. It doesn't matter how you get
it. It's still counts the same, no doubt about it. Clemson fans
can attest to that. If you'relast week in Duke. It's an unpredictable

(01:23:10):
landscape breakdown college football in so manyways. Killian McClatchy is the play by
play voice for Charleston Southern, joiningus here on the English Tailgate Show and
talk about that win. Look, you know, to get off on the
right foot there, first time asa head coach with this program. Now
he's been a head coach at DeltaState, he's been with this program before.
But coach guardin you getting a firstwin there against North Greenville and there

(01:23:31):
were some struggles there, but somegood production from guys like j D.
Moore in the backfield. Talk aboutthat rushing attack, Yeah, yeah,
j D Moore, I mean hehit a really big game. Really,
it was one big rush late inthe fourth quarter that kind of set up
the game winning touchdown ultimately from TaviusEisen. He's kind of a name that
he kind of snuck underneath ephon RRadars going to the game, but expect
to see him kind of in someshort down or short yardage stuff. But

(01:23:55):
jadmore he's really getting the workforce. You know, Coach Guardini has kind of
set it to was previously. Youknow last week, going into Week one,
we all kind of knew it thathe was a guy that actually he
was in the transfer portal. Hewas he was looking to leave after Autrey.
Denson's kind of kind of think yetthe feeling that he just didn't feel
like he was getting used the waythat he wanted to get the touches that
he liked under under coach Dnson andGuardinia. That was one of the first

(01:24:17):
things he came into Charleston Southern whenright to j D Moore and said,
hey, I want you to beour guy. And you know we saw
a week one they fed him alot. And I think the biggest thing
is is not only JD, butthe offensive line. That was one of
the really really big points that coachmade apparent to us before we got going.
Look, it was one of myfavorite lines I had heard pretty much

(01:24:39):
all off seasons, but he saidwhen I came in this offensive line,
there are a bunch of poodles. We've turned him into pit bulls. They've
been mean, they've been nasty, they've been fighting to the whistle, and
you know, I think they Ithink they okay last week against North Greenville.
Still a lot of room to improveand obviously a real tough opponent going
up against Clemson. But I thinkthat offensive front, you know, a
lot of returning guys there and thenJad Moore, those are going to be

(01:25:00):
the two key pieces if they're gonnawant to try to move the ball a
little bit once game time comes.Killian McClatchy joins us here. He is
the play by play voice of theCharleston Southern football program, and you can
catch them live coming up here injust a couple of hours in Death Valley
against Clemson. What's been the messagefrom the coaching staff to the players this

(01:25:20):
week about, you know, facingthis challenge. It's a hostile environment.
Teams typically don't have success in thatarena. What's the vibe in the field
and taking on the challenge of cominginto a major ACC program and playing them
on the road. I think, honestly, you put it best right there.
It's a challenge. It's going tobe a challenge, and I don't

(01:25:41):
think they're you know, they're notdismissing that. Of course, they're going
to go into it and say, hey, yeah, you know, hey,
we're going to go in to winthis game. I think ultimately with
they want to execute. I thinkthat's the biggest thing. I think there
are a lot of things that theywanted to clean up from last week against
North Greenville they just weren't necessarily pleasedwith. So I think they're really looking,
hey, you know what, let'skind of move the ball a little
bit on offense, trying to getthe offensive line route moving a little bit

(01:26:03):
more. I'm sure they're really goingto want to improve on the past game.
That was something that really struggled lastweek. And then honestly, defensively,
I think really just kind of doa lot of what they did last
week. Begins North Greenville. Thedefense was one of the kind of the
little question marks con Charleston, something'salways kind of known for their defense.
The last couple of seasons kind ofbeen the Blue Swarm they've called it around

(01:26:26):
campus, and they kind of showedup lots of new faces. One of
the big ones that the middle linebackerthat took over Malikue Barnes, while the
transfers from Albany State that came overwith coach Guardina. He had a fantastic
game as well as the Ron Davisthe nose tackle. He was huge head.
I think he had a couple ofsacks that ended up actually ended up
getting an interception early in the gameas well. So really I think execution

(01:26:47):
go out there, played their gameand trying to put some good film on
the table as they can get closeronce conference play gets going and feel where
they want to be great stuff killing. You talked about the quarterback rotation there,
so to speak. You have aTony Bartolo and of course Caleb Jackson
who put up some numbers last week. Is there a classic rotation going on

(01:27:10):
there? Is there a lead quarterbackto look out for? What should Clemson
fans expect from the quarterback spot thisweek from Charleston Southern? So I can
tell you from what we've been told, it's gonna be Tony Bartal to start.
After that, I honestly, Ican't even tell you. I'm not
even sure they really know. Andso the thing is, it's interesting about

(01:27:31):
this quarterback room for Charleston Suddon. So you got Bartalo, you got Caleb
Jackson, who was kind of asurprise start last week, another one of
those Albany State transfers. It's areally athletic kid, you arm, I
think he's coming along. But thenyou've got You've got a guy in Isaiah
Betts who I wouldn't be surprised ifyou see him. Really tall, freak
of an athlete, really strong.Arm. I just don't think he's necessarily

(01:27:53):
developed in terms of the grasp theoffense fully just yet. I think that's
why we didn't really see much ofhim. But then one to really keep
an eye out on, and Iget said, I think you've got the
potential to seeing two, possibly eventhree quarterbacks over the course of this game.
But the one, the true freshman. He's a local kid from four
Dorchester High School just up the roadfrom CSU, but Zulton Osborne. He's

(01:28:16):
got probably some of the best hairin college football. I'm just saying,
you're not going to miss it.They call it the zofro Oh nice.
Really, he is really impressed incamp from a lot of people that I've
been talking to, from a lotof things that I've seen. He spends
the ball great. I think he'sultimately, I think going to be the
future of this program. It's justa matter of when he's going to get

(01:28:36):
that first opportunity to step in.And he said it wouldn't surprise me see
late in this game to possibly seenumber five trotting out there for a couple
of drives. Great stuff. Isalways the voice of the Buccaneers from Charleston
Southern, Killian McClatchy. Follow himon Twitter at JK McClatchy, one of
the best voices out there calling collegegames every single week. Can't thank you

(01:28:57):
enough of your time looking behind enemylines here as we're getting set for Charleston
Southern and Clemson. Good lucky theyhave a great call man. Appreciate it.
Yeah, I have a good onethere. He is Killy McClatchy,
the voice of Charleston Southern right hereon the Engles Tailgate Show. Much more
to come right here on ninety twopoint five WSC. This is the Ingles
Tailgate Show on ninety two point fivew e s C. It is so

(01:29:34):
gay season down here in the Southand we are live from Little John Colisse
and then the Shadows of Death Valley. Getting your primed and ready for a
big time game tonight than this afternoonto fifteen kickoff. You got Clemson tangling
with Charleston Southern. We thank KillianMcClatchy for his time, and it was
good to get in touch with KillianRichard and to hear his perspective on a

(01:29:56):
program that we don't know a lotabout. I want to say that one
of the first games I call forESPN played by Playwise was down there at
Charleston Southern a couple of years agowith a good friend Jason Halter, and
he you know, look that programkilling He talked about it went through some
ups and downs with Autry Denson,a great guy who played at Notre Dame,
by the way, and they moveon to a new coach, Gabe

(01:30:17):
Guardinia, who played at Alabama wasconsidered the rooty of Alabama. Get there
for a while and he's bringing adifferent mindset and attitude. I know,
you know this game is heavily favoritein Clemson's department right now, but it's
a big moment for this Charleston Southernprogram to come on the road and to
have this challenge and to put anothernotch in their belt. No, it
definitely is, and knowing that, yes, you're taking over a program might

(01:30:42):
not have the success that they werehoping for there in the Big South.
And now it is a little bitdifferent. You've got the Big South than
Ohio Valley Conference coming together to formthe football opportunity to field enough teams because
not every school in the Big Southhas football. So it's a unique situation
from that standpoint. And this isa unique situation for the Charleston Southern Buccaneers

(01:31:04):
come in here to Clemson. Neverplayed Clemson in their history, and so
that's what's intriguing just from that perspective, because I do look at it from
the outside view, it's how hasClemson not played Charleston Southern over the years?
Yeah, you would think I wouldthink so at some point you would
think that that would have happened now. Yet I'm not a big proponent of

(01:31:27):
FBS schools playing FCS schools, youknow, from that side of things,
just from a fan perspective, that'sjust me wanting to have games. FBS
play FBS teams and FCS play FCSS. Why we have it separated like that?
But that's a different story for adifferent day. But this is an
opportunity for Charleston Southern to, hey, say, we are playing one of

(01:31:50):
the top teams at least over thepast ten years from a national perspective,
you know, to get in differentenvironment all of that, it was a
great opportunity for them to get someof that experience and playing at high,
high level college football. With thatsaid, it's prediction time. Time to
dive into what we think will happentoday, and not so much the score.

(01:32:11):
We'll give you a score. ButRichmond, what are a couple things
you're looking for in this game? You want to see Clemson do to get
back on track after what happened lastweek. Yeah, I think I want
to see some players perform. KadeClubnick, I want to see him perform.
Adam Randall, can he get goingoffensively at the wide receiver position,
And obviously from a special team's perspective, you know, I'm hoping that we
see a lot of touchdowns, buttake advantage of any opportunity to go out

(01:32:34):
there and get some field goals ifyou can. Yeah, two guys,
I want to see Shines Dave onefrom each side of the ball. Jeremiah
Trotter. We want to see moreout of him. Obviously, he's a
great linebacker. Let's see if theycan get to the ball and fly together
to the ball. He's the leaderof that linebacking corps, obviously. And
then Jake Brennan Steel the tight end. Let's get more than one catch under

(01:32:54):
his belt. That's not his fault, it's not really anybody's fault. It's
week one. It was Duke. But let's see if we can get him
cooking. We appreciate y'all listening todayto the Engles Tailgate Show. All these
festive fans out here tailgating. It'scertainly been a pleasure for Richmond Weaver,
for Will Vandervoort, for our goodfriend Killian McClatchey, for Trey Falco.
Back in the studio, I'm JohnEllis. We appreciate you listening this week

(01:33:14):
on Undy two point five WSC.We'll catch you next time right here on
the Engles Tailgate Show.
