Well it fits the theme of collegefootball. Primetime has been in the news,
(00:41):
Prime this Prime net in It's Primetimefootball right here in Clemson, in
the shadows of Death Valley, Clemsonfor the first time this year, playing
under the lights tonight eight pm.Kickoff right here on ninety two point five
W E. Sc Is, TomHerman's Florida Atlantic Owl's come to town.
This is the Tailgate Show again. We're coming to you live from a little
(01:02):
John. Come out and see ushere until five pm. John alist Richmond
Weaver back with you for another weekat Clemson football. What's up, my
friend? Oh hey, it isa game day here in Clemson. The
second game of the home series thatClemson is getting ready to play in its
you look at the initials, it'sFAU, not FSU. I know a
lot of people are getting ready forthe FSU game, but you got to
(01:23):
take care of business right now againstFAU. And speaking of primetime, yes,
this game is at eight o'clock anda lot of talk about primetime.
Dion Sanders and his sunglasses, andI see you're honoring her sunglasses on today
primetime game. And look, Iwear my sunglasses at night. As the
song goes here, although it's afternoonnow, it is a bit cloudy,
it's a pleasant day. It's beautiful. I woke up this morning and I
(01:46):
could feel Richmond, just like Iknow you could see on the sixteenth of
September that cool, full breeze. My friend, it's time, man.
You know how many times have Italked about that. I love when it
gets crisp in the morning and thenyou have a little bit sun later in
the day and it warms up alittle bit. You can't ask her anything
better from this perspective. And nowwe got do have a little bit of
cloud cover here in Death Valley, watching the Tailgators get ready. They're all
(02:10):
set up, and more people aregoing to be coming in as the day
progresses. But right now, there'sno question about it that these fans they
want to see the Tigers get readyto play at eight o'clock tonight, no
doubt about it. A big timegame here as we come to you live
once again from Little John Coliseum.Kickoff tonight at eight pm, and again
(02:30):
we're right here in the valley andit's gonna be a great deal of fun
in terms of seeing what this teamcan do. Just what's on tap today,
Just to let you know, we'vegot Will Vanderboard coming up around four
fifteen today, just to shade beforethen with an inside look with Will Vandervoord.
And then, as always, wego behind enemy lines, this time
around an interesting cat, Ken Lavika, he's the play by play voice of
(02:53):
the FAU Athletics. You know umbrellathere, and we're gonna talk with Ken
about this game, about Tom Herman. Of course, Tom's been around the
block. He knows a thing ortwo about coaching at big time FBS level
football. But also let's talk alittle basketball about the final four. Was
one of my favorite things is thatyou did get to talk to him about
(03:14):
basketball, And obviously I am abasketball guy. Love college football, don't
get me wrong, but deep down, my first love was basketball. So
watching FAU and their magical run, what they were able to do, and
Ken was able to be a partof the excitement and calling that there for
the FAU Athletic Network, and Iknow he had a blast doing that and
(03:38):
lifetime, once in a lifetime typeof experience. But don't sleep on FAU
and basketball either, because I'm tellingyou they're gonna be the top ten preseason,
that's how good they are. Well, he was excited. We'll talk
to him, catch up with himat four thirty pm behind enemy lines.
But Rich, let's start out witha look back at what happened last week.
Look, I'll be honest with you, we came into this game with
(04:00):
high expectations. I know your pickand might pick both mirrored each other a
little bit in terms of the score. I think you were a little more
anticipatory of sort of a fifty fivezero, which I look at the end
of the day. Look, therethere's some stats here I want to go
over in a minute. But itwas not a fun first fifteen minutes for
Clemson, or so it was ugly. It was not up to the standard.
(04:21):
You know, the standard here isthe standard, and that was not
the standard for Clemson. Uh,your thoughts on look early turnovers again for
Kate club Nick and how Charleston Southernsort of stunned a lot of Clemson fans
in that early fifteen minutes. Well, Charleston Southern took advantage of some mistakes
by Clemson, and it seemed tobe the theme for the first two games
(04:43):
and especially I would say in thefirst five quarters for Clemson football offensively,
that just ugly turnovers and not evenso much just the turnovers themselves, but
backbreaking turnovers in terms of the fumblethere against Charleston Southern, that they get
the ball down to two yard line, basically easy touchdown scoring opportunity, and
(05:03):
then obviously the pick six there. So you're giving the team basically fourteen points
right there. So you're putting yourselfat a disadvantage and Clemson is staring at
a fourteen to seven deficit as thefirst quarter is winding down. So you
know, the national narrative at thatpoint is here we go. We predicted
it in the downfall for the ClemsonTigers football because we're seeing Charleston Southern give
(05:31):
them everything they want. That's justwith looking at the score, you didn't
know what was going on, butthe context of the game and how it
was all caused by the turnovers becausethat opening drive, that's what you wanted
to see from Clemson. March rightdown the field, have an opportunity.
Now even from a perspective, theyhad to go forward on fourth down in
that first series, but they wereable to convert and go in and score,
(05:55):
and that's what you wanted to seefrom the Clemson offense. And then
we were able to see that lateron, obviously, as the Tigers really
got things kicking into high gear andwe're able to enforce their will, so
to speak, on Charleston Southern andbe able to score sixty six total points,
sixty six to seventeen. Clemson getsto one on one now one and
(06:15):
oh at home, which is ofcourse always big here at Clemson. When
you went at home, you establishedyour dominance, especially in the second half
of a football game. That seemedto be the trend for Clemson early last
season. Two. In some ofthese early games they had I remember Louisiana
attack member Ferman. They had tokind of scratch and claw early in the
first quarter. And look, I'llgo back to the same thing we talked
(06:36):
about last week when we analyzed theDuke game. You're going to have some
early season hiccups here and there fromthe offense. It's going to happen.
Continuity is an issue. You've gotsome coaching turn over there with a new
offensive coordinated. There's a lot ofexcitement about the dirt raid offenses we've talked
about, and it showed itself there. I thought was critical there before halftime
(06:59):
for Robert Gunn to get that fuelgoal, for them to get that drive
going. Their thirteen plays fifty nineyards, and we talk about the middle
four of that game, the middleeight minutes, so the four minutes before
halftime, the four minutes after halftime. You come right out in about four
minutes into the third quarter, fiveplays fifty four yards film offa gets in
the end zone. So the runninggame got cooked. And how about Wade
Wood As speaking of an analogy torunning backs, he said this week,
(07:23):
of course he felt like Will Shipley, if what's in his life he got
to be Will Shipley a thirty fiveyard interception return. There was some highlight
real plays in this game of thesecond half. My friend and Wade Wood
as he looked a little bit likea running back. He's very athletic and
being able to almost kind of tiptoedown the sideline there and gets into the
end zone. And obviously it's thosetype of plays that you wanted to see
(07:45):
also from the Clemson defense. Andthat's why not from a not only from
her perspective of wanting to see theoffense eliminate those ugly turnovers get back into
some type of rhythm and some typeof of where they looked like they were
working together as a unit where itdidn't seem that they were doing that previously.
But then on the defensive side, could they also impose their will against
(08:09):
Charleston Southern knowing that they were overmatchingCharleston Southern, especially there on that front
line. But it was the defensethat really got things going with Wade Wood
as getting that pick six. Accordingto Clemson's media guide here for today's game,
one hundred and seventeen Clemson players playedlast week, which unofficially is the
(08:33):
all time record. Who was formerlyone hundred and eleven from a few years
back. So that's the one thingI wanted to see from this game the
early turnovers. Look, I know, the coaches, the staff, the
players, Cade himself who was tryingto do a little too much at times,
will settle in. He did settlein the second half. But I
wanted to see an abundance of playersget some opportunities in this game. With
the margin that stretched down to sixtyto seventeen, you're gonna get some of
(08:56):
that. So that was great tosee. You got to see guys like
Keith Adams Junior in the running game. He even got to see an amazing
catch by one hamp Green in thisgame. Who was bringing it in Odell
Beckham style Sports Center Top ten Playof number one, number one play of
the week. Clay Sweeney got himselfa reception for twenty one yards and then
you know again, Antonio Williams BouCollins. Good to see them combined for
(09:20):
three touchdowns and I thought it wasbig for Collins even against the opponent.
We talk about the standard will gethigher even today with Florida Atlantic being a
tough for opponent and then especially nextweek. But to see Bo Collins get
some confidence under his bell. Richmondseven receptions a Buck thirty seven. The
big boy had one touchdown as wellalong of sixty nine, and that's great
to see Bow get some of thathundred yard plus mojo going, my friend.
(09:41):
Yes, but coach Dabo Sweeney wasnot too happy with bo Collins as
he scores that touchdown and seems tostart celebrating a little bit too early.
Play. You got to finish thatplay. But I agree with you.
This is what we talked about atthe beginning of the season and that I
(10:01):
think the guy that really is goingto have to step up and be that
alpha guy there from the wide receiverposition, especially on the outside. You
know, you've got Antonio Williams andhe can go outside if he needs to,
but he is so impactful in thatslot position. But if you can
have a Boucollins to be on thatoutside and be that guy that can extend
(10:22):
some plays just with his legs andalso try to take the top off of,
you know, some of the defensesthere and can he convert those fifty
fifty balls also, And that's whatwas so valuable for so many years that
Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, theyhad those type of guys that could go
up and get the fifty fifty balls, and most terms they would make the
(10:43):
fifty fifty balls eighty twenty balls, and sometimes like Mike Williams and Justin Ross
Ti Higgins, they'd make him ninetyten because those guys were catching it just
a little side by her. Iwas watching this great documentary this week on
Amazon Prime called Kelsey. I've notseen it, but I've seen the trailer
for him in connection here. Isaw that play again when Jason was watching
his brother Travis play in the gameand they showed that T Higgins catch from
(11:05):
the Championship GEP last year where hejust lost like two guys. It's exactly
to your point. He can makethose eighty twenty catches. And you're looking
from that from a Boa Collins toin this game, our friend Aiden Swanson
had a quiet day. He didn'thave to do much. But again,
the special teams was solid overall.Robert Gunn no hiccups on extra points there,
that's big two. I think thoseare little things you look at because
(11:26):
it was a tough game against Dukeand gun was perfect in this game.
That's right, and from a fanperspective, and I've talked about this it's
not as much fun watching Clemson playan FCS opponents. It's just not But
from a player perspective and even froma coaching perspective, it is an opportunity
(11:46):
to can you just gain a littlebit more confidence coming off of a loss
like you did against Duke where youhad two block field goals and knowing that
you didn't perform to your best.So now you're in a scenario where the
pressure is not as much, butyou get the opportunity to get in that
still game like environment. Because we'vetalked about it, John Rubert Gunn and
(12:09):
those guys, they could go outthere on the practice field and continue to
practice those kicks all day long. It's completely different though, when the red
light is owned, so to speak, when it's a true game against a
different opponent, and your body reactsdifferent, your mind reacts different, and
I think we saw some of thatin that Duke game. So it was
good that those guys could build alittle bit of confidence. And now can
(12:31):
they carry that over not only intothis game against Florida Atlantic, but for
the rest of the season, noquestion about it. Rich you look at
the Clemson passing stats for last weektwenty eight of thirty seven three fifteen.
He had the four touchdowns, hedid have the critical interception early on,
and he did have a fumble. So again the theme continues to be,
as with most teams early, whetherit's the NFL, whether it's college,
(12:54):
whether it's high school, earlier inthis season, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.
Clean those up. That's really andthen we're not having any discussions about
this game. We're not at allbecause it was an absolute domination. And
just think about this. So Clemsonhas accrewed four hundred and eighty four,
four hundred and twenty two and sixhundred and seventy nine total yards and cade
(13:15):
club Nick's first three career starts, and he became only the third quarterback in
Clemson history to help the Tigers reachfour hundred yards of offense and each of
their first three starts. And theother two quarterbacks that he joined, it's
Taj Boyd in two eleven and TrevorLawrence and twenty and eighteen, and no,
by the way, yeah, TrevorLawrence was a number one overall pick
(13:37):
and he was there. He was. That's a good company for mister cad
So clean up those turnovers and it'sa different story. You do that and
everything is good. How about thisstat as well, a six hundred and
six yardage differential in this game, second all time in program history. So
again, for a day that youknow the opponent is going to be,
uh not up to your level. You know that going in they were up
(14:01):
to the challenge early in terms ofstealing a couple of possessions. But for
a team like Clemson to play onehundred and seventeen players throughout this game,
to Dodd Waver to continue to getthat depth because we know, we know,
we've seen our good friend from WillTaylor and others put this stuff out
about how you're going to have RossTaylor, I should say, sorry,
wells, look into the baseball field. That's what I'm thinking. Will Ross
(14:26):
Taylor's put this stuff out about howmany injuries they accrued over the past couple
of seasons. Some of these guysthat played are gonna have to step up
at some point, you know, and you don't wish injury on anybody,
but that was good experience to getunder their belt, even if it's against
say Buccaneers team that was well belowthe standard that you'll start facing moving forward,
speaking of which, we'll talk aboutsome higher standards here as we get
(14:46):
into the top twenty five reports. We've got games going on right now.
We'll look back at some of thekey games that happened last week. Florida
State and Action right now, someother teams about to get things going here.
We're live from Little John Coliseum withthe Ingles Tailgate Show. Kickoff is

who has some interesting perspective on thisprogram that don't sleep on them.
Now. They've got some talent, they've got some speed, they've got a
good quarterback, good young quarterback. We'll talk about him and some stories from
his journey to the Final four.Is the play by play voice of Fau.
(16:38):
We're gonna talk to them about thatand much much more coming up at
four thirty. And then Will Vandervoordis always around four fifteen, just a
shade before with an inside look fromthe Clemson inside or our good buddy Will
Vanderford will stop by to give usall the inside nuggets and notes and news
you need for your Clemson Tigers asthey're looking to get to two and one.
Now get the winning record here andstart to get some positive momentum.
(17:02):
Not in the top twenty five rightnow, but some teams are. And
let me tell you something. There'sa fascinating story brewing right now in Chestnunt
Hill. With five nineteen left inthe fourth quarter, Florida State, number
three in the country, is leadingby three points. I was listening to
this game on the way down richand Boston College was ahead in this game
early on. I believe Casta Lantos, the quarterback, has been tremendous today.
(17:25):
And there was an injury to JordanTravis. He went down with the
left shoulder injury. Don't know theextent of it right now, getting some
updates on that. But right now, Thomas Castellano's has the football with about
five minutes to play, and they'redown by three, and that would be
look, Chestnut Hill, that's anawkward place to play two. Yeah,
yeah, they're down by two ohtwenty nine. Okay, well, I
(17:45):
correct I stand corrected. There wego. Thirty one twenty nine is the
score right now. Okay, Sowe'll find We'll keep an eye on that
as well. And Jordan Travis.I did see that he came back and
was able to play in that firstseries and that was a last that I
heard, and unfortunately, I wouldhave to say the one things that you
do love about the tailgating all thepeople here. The downside to it is
(18:08):
that getting Wi Fi getting some informationsometimes it's a little spotty, but that's
okay. We can take care ofthat. Well, we'll figure some things
out. So we might be alittle bit delayed on some of our information
as far as some of the updates, but I was delayed. That's a
critical point. That is a criticalpoint now I am because it was thirty
(18:29):
one to twenty two and they didscore that touchdown. So I would have
to see how this plays out thatnow FSU's got the ball back, can
BC get me stop here and beable to create some type of chaos in
the ACC And this is what wetalked about though, and I even talked
about it on our sister station oneO four nine Fox Sports Upstate UH during
(18:52):
the Richmond Weaver Show from three tofour and also with you John Game on
from four to six pm each weekday. But Boston College, they lose to
Northern Illinois in that first game inovertime they barely beat Holy Cross and then
there's no way they could even competewith Florida State. That was the narrative,
(19:12):
right, But we know sports, this is just the reality of how
it plays out each in every year, there's something that will surprise you.
And for whatever reason, I felta noon game for Florida State going up
to Boston College might be a littlebit of a tricky game for them,
knowing that could they be in asituation of looking ahead to the matchup with
(19:37):
the Clemson Tigers where they have lostto Clemson seven consecutive times. So you
can't tell me human nature that itdoesn't happen where you start thinking ahead and
not talked to Eric McLane of theACC Network this past week and just getting
his perspective as a player, andhe said, oh, one thousand percent,
(19:57):
it happens. Start looking ahead, and when you do that, that's
when it's very, very dangerous. And I think Florida State was probably in
that position. So we'll see howthis plays out, and we're trying to
get more information exactly the status withJordan Travis, but I do know he
did come back there in the secondhalf. Yeah, still right now though,
(20:18):
we got about five minutes to playand they're nursing a two point lead
in this game. The rest ofthe top twenty five bits in action right
now. Number seven Penn State,no big surprise with Drew Aller the quarterback,
playing very well right now, thirtyto seven at Champlaine. Right now
they're winning with about nine oh fourleft in that game. Number fourteen LSU.
Look, we talk about Starksville beinga tough place to play, but
(20:38):
obviously not today for LSU forty oneto fourteen. That game is winding down
right now in the SEC. Howabout this score right here? Kansas State,
number fifteen in the country is ina battle with Missouri twenty seven of
peach. Coach Drinks got them playingright now. Defensively they've been one of
the better teams in the country, and offensively they've met the challenge today.
(20:59):
It's hill game. Under thirty secondsleft in this game. We'll give you
an update when we can. KansasState was big twelve champions last year right
there. Bill m has done agreat job as head coach there, so
this is a big time opportunity forMissouri. To showcase that, hey,
don't sleep on us in the SECwhere a lot of people have thought that
okay is Missouri. You know,we know how they played against Georgia last
(21:22):
year, but that was really theone shining moment and that was still in
a loss, but they played Georgiaextremely tough. But this would be a
big time win for Missouri. Wecan update you that Jordan Travis is indeed
back in the game right now,and it looks like he just threw an
incomplete pass on a fourth down intheir own territory, so it could be
an opportunity for Boston College to getthe ball back. We'll update you on
(21:44):
that one. That's a vital gameon a lot of clips and fans have
a special interest in that final score, so we're giving a update on that
as they're made available. We talkedabout Kansas State Missouri and a dogfight bread
now coming down to the finish,Utah pretty they're a lead right now over
Weber State number twelve. Utah seventeento seven is the first half winds down,
so again, not running away withthat game at all. At home
(22:06):
number nine hundred, name who lookedgreat so far up twenty one seven against
Central Michigan. Those games are alllive right now in the top of twenty
five, and then of course inabout five minutes or so down there between
the hedges, a team that acouple of teams that are not health thought
up necessarily in these parts. Georgia, number one in the country, taken
on South Carolina should be a fascinatingball game. And this is again one
(22:32):
of those games that on paper itlooks like Georgia should be able to take
care of business without any issue.Obviously, Georgia is in the spotlight having
an opportunity to be the first teamin modern college football history to win three
consecutive national championships. And here inthe college football playoff era, we know
(22:52):
that's the hardest because of you.You make it to the final four,
but you have to win two gamesto win the national championship. So it's
different than just being voted from theAP voters or the UPI how it used
to be. But this is aSouth Carolina team. But called Spencer Rattler
is playing so well right now ifthey can give him some protection, just
(23:14):
give him a little bit of time. But that's the issue with South Carolina.
Their offensive line and they're not healthyin some of the key offensive positions
at wide receiver there and with JuiceWales being hurt. But if South Carolina
can hang around early, this couldbe a close game. Yeah, I
think so. You have back onFox Sports Upstate. We talked about one
to four point nine in the Upstatehere you can listen to us every single
(23:37):
week there Richmond Weaver at three pmon the Richmond Weavers Show, Yours Truly
and Troy Falco at four to sixpm. We have talked about this game
with a number of our Gamecock fansout there, including our good friend Billy
from Greer, and we all kindof agreed that, look, the Gamecocks,
if they can just somehow protect SpencerRatler a little bit better than they
did Week one, that's a tallorder in Georgia who has number one draft
(24:00):
picked after number one draft pick onthat defense every single year. Give Radler
a little bit of a chance andmaybe they can make this thing interesting.
I don't know if it's going tobe a blowout, but the first fifteen
minutes are crucial for South Carolina thisgame. We'll give it ceen in South
Carolina. As any team if you'veseen what happened in Durham with Clemson.
If there's some key turnovers and you'reable to capitalize on those, then anything
(24:23):
can happen. For So for anupset to occur, the team has to
have some turnovers and also has tohave some type of big plays on special
teams. And guess what team isreally good at special teams. That's South
Carolina. Yes, exactly things goon there. Obviously what Shane Biemer's being
(24:45):
able to learn from his dad,Frank Biemer, and Virginia Tech was always
known for their special teams, Sothere could be something that happens there in
South Carolina in Athens, i shouldsay, in that South Carolina Georgia game.
But there's also it could be ascenario where it could be fifty two
to three Georgia wins, the causeof the offensive hour and the defense that
(25:06):
Georgia has, the balance they haveon both offense and defense. You just
never know. A quick update onBoston College. They have the football right
now, down by two points withjust over three minutes left at three o
nine to be exact, and they'renearing midfield. At this point they're facing
it looks like a third down that'sas much play by play as we're allowed
to do without getting in trouble withour friends at ABC. But that gives
(25:29):
you a quick update on where westand. I'm sure a lot of our
tail gators out there while they're listeningthus might have the TV on and watching
that game. I'm eagerly I seesome people with I can tell they've got
a TV over there. They mightbe ahead of us, so we might
have to get them to give usthe true update of let us know what
game they're watching. And I thinkwe can take our headphones off and listen
to a few roars, we mightunderstand in a few minutes something might have
(25:52):
happened that. That's some other toptwenty five games to keep an eye on.
Have a Minnesota North Carolina. Don'tsleep on Minnesota, don't sleep on
PJ. Fluck coming in that boat. Row the boat, PJ. Let's
see if they can pull off awin, because North Carolina look interesting week
one against South Carolina last week.I mean, one of the most fun
games every year is app State NorthCarolina. Now it's like a tradition unlike
any other. Keep that on theslate if you will. And in Minnesota,
(26:15):
they played Nebraska tough, got thewin week one. They're feeling good
at two and oh right now,Alabama takes on South Florida on the road.
New quarterback for them, we'll talkabout later on. As Milroe was
on the bench. DJAU will beplaying San Diego State today. Oregon State,
number sixteen in the country, BurntVinables, number nineteen in the country
of the Oklahoma taken on Tulsa, number six, Ohio State taken on Western
Kentucky, number eight, Washington takenon Michael or taking on Michigan State,
(26:40):
Michael PENNOCKX junior for Washington going againstthe program that's under a lot of fire
right now, as with melt Tucker, very unfortunate situation. How about number
eleven Tennessee. Can they finally finallygets done the swamp? I mean,
this is how is that possible?I don't know that Tennessee struggles so bad
against Florida. I don't know,but it's a big day for coach Napier.
I'll say that I was watching addon game day and it I did
(27:03):
not remember just the dominance that Floridahas over Tennessee. It's crazy, especially
against some of those great Tennessee teamstoo. Oh, so many good ones
out there or Jesse Palmer earlier talkingabout it, and the Tim Tebow was
mentioned in the conversation as well.So many big games coming up. But
of course everybody and their cousin andtheir mom and their dad except for Rich
(27:25):
and I, it seems, arein Boulder, Colorado to see Colorado and
Colorado State tangle tonight. Sort ofan interesting you know nightcap ten PM game
tonight, and you know what, give your hat tip to coach Prime once
again? Yes, And you know, I got to know Matt Rule a
little bit from his days in theCarolina Panthers. They came in defensively.
(27:47):
I respect what he's doing there froma defensive perspective, but something ticked them
off, to say the least aboutwhat Matt Rule did in the off season.
I don't know what he said.I don't know how he said it.
I don't know if it's some ofthat Michael Jordan's stuff. We saw
the last Dance where you man,you facture some content to get yourself motivated.
But as Dion says, it waspersonal. Yeah, it was about
the transfer portal and how Deon wasusing the transfer portal and Matt Rule was
(28:11):
talked about. How he would youknow, was not under the same philosophy,
so to speak, as far asthe transfer portal, yes, and
so Deon took that personally there andit's obviously able to utilize that and even
so much like right now with JayNorvelle, the head coach of Colorado State,
(28:32):
using those comments also about the sunglassesand the hat and taking that off
in prime time when he starts talkingabout when you bring in my mama,
then it's a little bit different.Like what Sylo said, why would you
want to do this? Yea said, why why are we doing this?
It makes no sense whatsoever. Butright now for college football, I absolutely
love what Deon is doing. Idon't know if this will last, what
(28:55):
the stability is for this entire season, maybe it implodes, who knows.
Obviously he's got the game against ColoradoState tonight, but then the next two
games against Oregon and then against SouthernCal so big time opportunities to see exactly
if Colorado is for real or not. But we know the hype is for
real. Obviously College Game Day wasthere, you had the Rock there as
(29:18):
a celebrity picker. Everybody everybody wasthere, big noon kickoff was there?
Then you had the Pat McAfee showwas broadcasting there, Yes, first take
was broadcasting live there. And thenwhen you have sixty minutes broadcasting from Boulder,
Yes, then something's a little differentgoing on from that perspective. And
that's all the cause of Dion Sandersin primetime. It's the hottest ticket right
(29:41):
now. Of course, we gotto mention Miami with a big win over
between Cookman forty eight to seven backon Thursday night. So again a lot
of conversation about you know, again, this comes on the heels of what's
going on right now in real timeup in Chestnut Hill where Boston College has
Florida State and a weird situation latein this game. More on that coming
up. But that's second best teamwe talk about in the a SEC.
(30:02):
Miami's playing some good ball right nowto Mario Krista ball, so they're getting
it done. Hey, upset alert, here we go. Missouri has taken
down Kansas State thirty to twenty seven. So it's a big time win for
coach Drink out there, thirty totwenty seven. Final in that game,
we'll take a breather we'll take alook at what's going on a little closer
with this Florida State game, keepyou updated on that, and we'll take
a deeper dive into the ACC aroundthe ACC coming up next. This is
(30:26):
the Ingles Tiale Gate Show live fromLittle John Kolis and I'm John Ellis.
That's Richmond Weaver. We're back withmuch more right after this on ninety two
point five w SC. This isthe Ingles tail Gate Show on ninety two
point five w e SE continuing livefrom Little Come to see him. It's
(31:00):
the middle of September and it's feelinga little more a lot of October out
here with this cloud cover and thelow humidity. We're loving it out here
live on ninety two point five wSC. It's the Engles Tailgate Show.
That's Richmond Weaver. I'm John atLet's come out and see us here live
from outside of good old Little Johnas we're getting set for a big time
game for Clempson against Ford Atlantica.Team lad is of course by Tom Herman.
(31:22):
It's an eight pm kickoff tonight atMemorial Stadium. You can hear it
live right here on ninety two pointfive WeSC. We mentioned before the break
there was an upset alert as aMissouri kicker, Harrison MeVis has nailed a
sixty one yard field goal at homeat Missouri. They be Kansas State number
fifteen in the country. Kansas Statea very good team thirty to twenty seven.
(31:45):
And it's so interesting this time ofyear, Rich where you get some
of these upsets. Look, Iknow, week one, Week two is
one thing, Week zero is awhole other animal. You get into week
three, week four towards the middleend of September, these games can change
the trajectory of seasons in Missouri becomesa legitimate player, you would assume now
in the top twenty five conversation.Whereas Kansas State. It's a crushing loss
(32:07):
for them, Yes it is.And Harrison, where's number ninety two?
He doesn't even look like a kicker. And I think the kick would have
been good from like sixty five yards. Yeah, I mean he hammered that
kick. It was a bomb. And congratulations to Missouri as they get to
celebrate at home as the time wasexpiring. He makes that kick, big
(32:30):
time win for coach drink wits outthere and then we'll see what happens with
that program moving forward as the SECcontinues to be, you know, always
competitive, and now you get alittle bit of a power dynamic there.
Of course, we talked about itlast week as we continue to talk about
what's going on not only the toptwenty five but within the context of the
ACC. Let's shift to the SECfor just a second. We didn't even
(32:51):
mention the game last week with theAlabama a rare home loss against a team
that's again, they're ranked, andthey're very good. Quinn Yours is a
hell of a quarterback, and you'vegot coach Stark out there who's got a
lot of bona fides and he knowscoach Saban and that environment really well.
But that's rare to see a homelost for Alabama by ten plus points range
times. That was one of thosegames where when I looked at it,
(33:15):
closed my eyes and just said,Okay, this is Nick Saban, this
is Alabama. They're gonna do whatAlabama does. I think they feel a
little disrespected right now, But itwas Texas that I think is feeling even
more disrespected because how many times werewe questioning, all right, is Texas
really back? Is this year? Can they actually put something together and have
(33:36):
a signature win, and that signaturewin would obviously be in Tuscaloosa against Alabama,
and Quinn youers, he was obviouslyable to stay healthy this game,
where last year he gets banged up, and it just looks like he's a
different quarterback right now just from hisperspective of the touch that he has on
those deep balls. He was ableto connect with those in that game against
(34:00):
Alabama, and as we talked aboutJohn just giving especially a quarterback, a
little bit of confidence like that, watch out and Texas has loaded. They've
got some talented guys. So I'mnot saying that they're now just because they
beat Alabama they're going to contend fora national championship, but they do have
the players on the field that thingsgo their way and they continue to play
(34:22):
that type of football that we saw. Yeah, watch out for Texas.
They could be they could be back. Texas could be back, no question
about it. And then a saluteto the PAC twelve as it is right
now is it or whatever it is? Right? Yeah? Right, the
ever dissolving PAC twelve, which goesout of business officially here in the coming
months, but man, that conferenceis on fire. Right now, everybody's
(34:43):
playing at a high level, fromUCLA to Oregon to USC You've got Colorado
now in the conversation, so manyother teams. Washington's right there in the
top ten. So again, Iknow it's all going to come to an
end pretty soon, the ever changingescape of college football such as it is.
But man, a hat tipped thoseteams out West because we don't give
them quite enough tension. And thenyou've got Lincoln Riley's So Cal team out
(35:05):
there with probably the number one overallpicnicst year in the NFL draft. Caleb
Williams is right. And this isagain going back to the ultimate reality TV
series or TV show. And Isay this in general terms just sports.
Sports is still the only thing thatis appointment TV viewing from that perspective because
(35:27):
it's live. We get that, but just how appropriate is it or ironic
also that the PAC twelve as it'sdissolving, you have some of the better
teams in the country right now,at least early on in this twenty twenty
three college football season. But moreimportantly, just look at the quarterback play.
Hey hey, we got some fanswalking, let me go Tigers.
(35:50):
That's right, But how crazy isit that for the Pac twelve just a
quarterback play, John, It isimpressive when you talk about pinics, when
you're talking about Caleb Williams, whenyou're even talking about Shador Sanders, bo
Nicks. Yes, and then don'tforget about dj L. We know how
talented he is. Now can heput together a season that I think a
(36:12):
lot of people were hoping he wouldhave one of those seasons here at Clemson
obviously, but the Pac twelve hassome talented quarterbacks in that conference, and
such a shame that that conference isdissolving, as you talked about, But
it is the next chapter for collegefootball, and where we're going, I
think is actually going to be evenmore exciting for college football in the coming
(36:34):
years. Yeah, growing pains, but look, as is the case with
anything, when you won, progressand that's the way it is right now
in college football, speaking of whichthe ACC still firmly intact at the moment.
You've got some interesting games going onright now, including the game we
talked about earlier, the matchup atleast I talked about this week on the
year. Northwestern, a program that'sjust under a lot of just kind of
(36:55):
like you can State a lot ofturmoil right now, a lot of trouble.
Duke takes them on at home today. Riley Leonard's already got them on
the board seven nothing. Duke leadsin this game. And again it's a
big game for Duke not to havea trip up moment if they want to
continue to ascend in that conversation,to look at their twenty first in the
country, so let's not sleep onthem at all. The big wins.
(37:15):
They can work their way to thetop ten at some point well. And
obviously Northwesterns had their issues and they'rea team that's in turmoil also, as
we mentioned, even with Michigan State. But look at this, I mean,
this is the in basketball. Weno longer have it now, but
for several years it was the ACCBig Ten Challenge in basketball. Now it's
(37:36):
going to be the ACC SEC Challenge, which I'm very excited about for basketball.
But here in football, we're goingback to the ACC Big Ten Challenge.
We had Virginia and Maryland play lastnight and Maryland was able to get
that win forty two to fourteen, and then Louisville and Indiana matched up today
in Louisville holds on after a biglead and gets to win against Indiana.
(37:57):
You just mentioned the Northwestern Duke game. Then you've got virgin You Tech at
Rutgers, and then you've got Minnesotaat North Carolina that we had mentioned,
and then Syracuse at Purdue. Soagain we've got six ACC Big Ten games
in this one weekend, and soI love seeing these out of conference games
from that perspective. And then alsoin the rest of the ACC Action,
(38:19):
Wake Forrest somehow managed the comeback downtwenty four to seven to Old Dominion and
is able to come back and wintwenty seven to twenty four VMI and NC
State and NC State's handling business rightnow. Later tonight, Georgia Tech and
Ole Miss can Georgia Tech rebound afterthat embarrassing loss to Ole Miss last year
(38:40):
forty two to nothing against Lane Kiffin'srebels there, and then about the backyard
brawl Pittsburgh in West Virginia. Andthis is two teams that really really do
not like each other. Later tonightat seven, going way back to the
Johnny Majors, of course, NCState thirty one nothing over VMI at halftime.
(39:04):
So shout out to our friend BrianHall, big NC State fan as
well. Virginia Tech right now ina scoreless game against Rutgers. Say,
North Carolina is on the board againstMinnesota seven nothing early on Northwestern. Again
we mentioned earlier down seven nothing toduke at the moment, and then you
mentioned a couple of games earlier,Maryland with a big time win against Tony
Elliot's team. Look, they're stilltrying to get their fuel back, right.
(39:24):
Oh, they've been through a tonSo if Tony was not to win
a game for a few months,I think we can give a pass given
what they've been through in that program. You mentioned Louisville, they're three and
oh right now, I mean, look that big one win against Georgia Tech
in Atlanta. That's huge for them. Again three and it was a good
place to be and they can scorein bunches and they were able to.
They didn't so much in this gameagainst Indiana there in the second half,
(39:46):
but they were up twenty one nothingat one point in that game. So
Louisville definitely can score. And notto say that their defense is going to
be that touted, but again, sometimes defense can just provide you with a
few turnovers whatever it might be.And then if you've got some offense,
because we know how hard it isfor defenses to stop these college football offenses
(40:09):
these days, you've got to atsome point also be able to ask score
and sometimes in some of these games, John As you know, you've just
got to be able to outscore youropponent. That's all it is. I
mean, look, how many gameshave we seen like that? Look at
North Carolina app State be a greatcase study of that over the past couple
of years. Indeed, after wesaw the past couple of years there in
(40:30):
that game. It's early doings now, but we have a scoreboard update,
Richmond. Let our fine listeners knowwhat's going on between the hedges. Yeah,
between the hedges. The South CarolinaGamecocks go down the field and score
first in this game. With ninefifty six to go in this game,
as we see the game Cocks thereas I'm trying to see, Yes,
(40:51):
Spencer Rattler with a touchdown pass twoAntoine Juice Welles. I told you on
touchdown right there, a healthy JuiceWells watch out for South Carolina. All
right, we have some fans back, and we are excited to get some
fans over here. There's a lotof tailgating going on right now. We're
doing it right here on the EnglishHealthy Selfie time on the English Tailgate Show
(41:14):
right here, live from Little JohnColosseum on ninety two point five WSC.
Coming up next, we'll take acloser look at what's going on around the
top twenty five and we'll start lookinga little more at the matchup between Florida
Atlantic and Clemson coming up tonight.Kickoff is at eight pm. We're here
until five pm right here at LittleJohn Colisseum on ninety two point five w
s C. This is the EaglesTailgate Show on ninety two point five w
(41:39):
e s C. Now here areyour hosts, John Allis and Richmond Weaver.
(42:00):
The tail game continues as we getall set and ready and prime for
a big game tonight, Clemson's firstprime time game of the twenty twenty three
season. It's an eight pm kickoffand Richmond Weaver John ellis here. We're
gonna be with you until five pmon night two point five WSC with the
Ingles Tailgate Show coming up in thenext hour. We got Ken Lavika joining
(42:22):
us. He's to play by playvoice with Fau. It's gonna be a
fun conversation with him behind him tothe lines. As we've done this every
week so far, and we gleana lot from the other side, some
opo research, if you will,in terms of what to expect. We
don't know a lot about this FAUprogram, other than there's a high profile
coach down there. They always seemto have one of the FAU, whether
it's Howard Snellenberger or Tom Herman orWilly Tagger, whoever might be. They
(42:45):
always have big names down there.Lane Kiffen, Lane Kiffen, Yes,
absolutely well, have to ask Kenabout lane Kiffen in the experience there.
I'm sure that'll come up as well. Before that, we'll be joined by
Will Vandervoort coming up around It's afour fifteen or so, just a few
minutes before then inside look with withWill Vanderforth there should say, and he's
from the Clemson Insider. Man alwaysdoes a great job giving us the latest
(43:08):
on that. As we told youearlier, it's a final down there for
Florida State. Up from Chestnut Hill. They do squeak by Boston College.
Jordan Travis was hurting this game.He came back in the game a brutal
face mask penalty late in the game. I believe they had upwards of fifteen
sixteen penalties in this game did BostonCollege. And a tough loss for them.
(43:28):
But man, no no easy sleddingfor Florida State Red though. There's
no easy sledding in any of thesegames. Just when you think that a
team is going to be so dominant, this is just the reality of college
football and just knowing that you can'ttake any of these teams for granted.
And that's why we can talk aboutFlorida Atlantic that they beat mon Meth that's
FCS school. They lost to Ohiofrom the mag you know, so this
(43:52):
is going to be a team that'snot going to be able to come in
here and compete with Clemson whatsoever.Hey, you just never know. So
you have to make sure that you'reready each and every day and especially come
game day. As Depos Sweeney hasalways talked about and you mentioned it,
John, the standard is the standard. You play to Clemson standard, not
(44:12):
to the standard of the team's uniform. So just because it says Florida Atlantic
or FAU instead of s FSU,you're still going to need to come out
and play. And that's what Ithink FSU they learned that pretty quickly today.
But tough one for Boston College though, with those penalties that you were
talking about, because at one timeBoston College had thirteen penalties in Florida State
(44:35):
had zero penalties. Yeah, Imean, and they still devastating and they
still only lose by two. Soyou just think of the narrow margins there.
It's a little bit like we talkedabout with Clemson week one. You
don't turn the football over with thatkind of frequency and unfortunate fuel position,
could be a completely different game. But you know the story about if and
butts, you know that's right.Yes, exteresting too that Tom Herman being
(45:00):
again a non conference game. DiaboSweeney and the Clemson Tigers, if I'm
not mistaken here, have lost threeof the last five against non conference opponents
once again, So I don't thinkFAU is up to the challenge here in
terms of going four quarters with them. But again, don't take them lightly.
As you talk about. They've gota good quarterback who's played well this
season. They've got speed on theoutside as well. That's a big thing
(45:21):
let's talk about with ken La Vicacoming up later. Well, it's interesting
too, just Tom Herman. Hedoes have a connection with the Clemson coaching
staff here back in twenty thirteen whenTom Herman was the offensive coordinator at Ohio
State, Chad Morris went and visitedTom Herman, go to talk about and
this is what coaches do. They'llgo visit other schools and a lot of
(45:42):
times we don't think that that happens, but that's exactly what happens. And
then you also had the opportunity ofTom Herman then at Texas. Then he
comes to Clemson and is able totalk to Jeff Scott and those guys.
And just looking back at that OhioState staff there in the twenty thirteen twenty
fourteen era, with Urban Meyers thehead coach, Tom Herman was the offensive
(46:05):
coordinator. Stan Drayton was the runningbacks coach who's now the Temple head coach.
Luke Fickel was the co defensive coordinatorthere. Now obviously he's the Wisconsin
head coach. And then you alsothe coach for the defensive line none other
than Mike Vrabel, the Tennessee Titanshead coach. Now, so that was
a stack that was a cast ofcharacters for certain but it's just interesting how
(46:31):
Tom Herman has always looked at Clemsonas a program, wanting to learn about
this offense and how they've been ableto do things, and then vice versa.
And so there is a connection thatTom Herman does have here with the
Clemson coaching staff. And some milestonesare on the horizon here in several ways
here and again, no, no, coach Swinney's not the one to put
(46:52):
this in the forefront, but there'ssome pride here with all this stuff.
Here they have was Swinney attempting towin his hundred and sixty third career game
he could pull within two wins ofFrank Howard's career total one sixty five and
seeing a little closer to the ofcourse, the legendary Frank Howard. Yes,
and he's doing it a lot lessgames too, wild less games as
(47:12):
well. How about this, Andagain this is a bit of a pipe
drain. But look, you candream big Clemson fans. If they happen
to go nuts again today and scoresixty points, it'll become the first time
in program history they have back toback sixty point games. So again,
I know it's sixty six last week, but again if they score sixty,
it'll be the first time in schoolhistory. They just want to get the
win. I think I've seen atall order, but yeah, sixty is
(47:36):
a tall order. It's just aboutgoing out there. And I know we'll
talk much more about it, butI think just the overall theme that Clemson
fans want to see just come outthere and play a clean game. Clean.
I like that ugly turnovers for thisgame. I think if it's thirty
to nothing or thirty to ten, thirty to fifteen or whatever, and it's
(47:57):
a turnover free game and it's clean, that's sign me up. Yeah,
that's been on in sixty six seventeenagainst Charleston Southern. You're turning the ball
over three or four times early inthe game. That's what you want to
see. Coming up in the nexthour, we've got an exciting slate of
content for you here. Will Vanderfordwill join us here. We've got on
this day with Richmond, We've weretaking a look back at what's going on
in the series. History limited asit is, there's a little bit of
history there. And Ken Lavika joinsus from the FAU Athletic Network. This
(48:22):
is the Engles Tailgate show live onninety two point five W E s C.
Much more to come right after thisninety two point five E S E
AM and FM Greenville, Spartanburg Anderson. We're talking Clemson Tigers and getting you
ready for a college football Saturday. And the Angles Tailgate Show is brought to
you by Ingles Markets, Low Prices, Love the Savings, Blue Ridge Electric
(48:45):
Cooperative, Harley Davidson of Greenville CareerFlooring Center, the Surgery Center at Pellham,
a Key Heating and Air, andPalmetto State Armory. Now Here are
your hosts, John Ellis, RichmondWeaver, as we inched closer to kick
(49:07):
off for Clemson in Fau tonight, the prime time opener, if you will,
for Clemson, not the season openerhere and not the home opener,
but the first time Clemson will beunder the lights in Death Valley this year.
And we're coming to you live fromLittle John Colise and getting your prime
to ready for this big game tonighton ninety two point five WS. The
tailgate crowd is filling up. Myfriend, We've got dozens of people,
(49:30):
they're excited, hundreds of people asfar as the eye can see out here,
getting you all set with all thenews and note you need ahead of
this matchup, we've updated you onwhat's going on in the top twenty five.
Of course, Florida State survives ascare in Shustnut Hill Boston College.
You've got South Carolina right now betweenthe hedges still winning seven nothing early in
(49:51):
that game. Much more to getto. I'm John Elliston. That's Richmond
Weaver. And look, it's gonnabe an exciting night of football again under
the lights with all the pageantry andall the Clemson has done of late Richmond
to enhance the nighttime environment. Finallygood to see that end of the third
quarter light show again, the rightshow if you will. Yes, and
I know a lot of fans arevery excited about that, just the culmination
of the renovation for Tiger Walk andhow that has been amped up and just
(50:16):
being able to celebrate all of theformer team captains there for the Clemson football
team and get to recognize those individualsand it's just a beautiful setting there as
the team gets to walk into thestadium there and then as you mentioned,
we know we talked about it lastyear with the big JumboTron or the dabotron
(50:37):
it was nicknamed, and just thatopportunity then to have the light show and
then the fireworks when the Tiger score. It's going to be an electric environment
here in the Valley. Tonight comingup in ten minutes, an inside look
with Will Vanderford. He'll join uslive on the phone here ahead of tonight's
game against the FAU Owls coming totown. And then about this is so
(51:00):
maybe twenty minutes behind enemy lines withour good friend Ken la Vica play by
play voice of FAU Athletics, withoutfurther ado. It is time every single
week right now for on this day, fire up the DeLorean. Time to
take a trip down memory. LayWell, we're going we Doole road.
(51:22):
It's OTD on this day and Clemsonfootball history. Here's Richmond Weaver. Oh,
yes, we are firing up thatDeLorean. September sixteenth. Let's walk
back to nineteen seventy eight, asClemson would win its one hundredth game in
Death Valley with a fifty eight tothree win over the Citadel and Steve Fuller
(51:46):
was a perfect nine for nine passingin that contest. Those are the days
nine for nine. Talking about dirtraids. Dirt raid right, there,
that was it, And that wasan all time Clemson record for consecutive completions
at that time. And Clemson wasa record fifteen for seventeen passing in that
contest with multiple quarterbacks playing there, and set a school record for team passing
(52:09):
efficiency. How about this in twothousand and six, Yes, James Davis
scored on a one yard touchdown runwith eight seconds left to give Clemson a
twenty seven to twenty victory over numbernine Florida State in Tallahassee. And James
Davis had actually set up the winningtouchdown with a forty seven yard run earlier
(52:32):
in that drive. Yes, thatwas the thunder, the part of thunder
and lightly he was definitely the thunder, James Davis. And now he's actually
part of the staff here as anAnalyso fantastic for James Davis. And then
how about this in two thousand andseventeen, Number three Clemson defeated number fourteen
(52:53):
Louisville on the road forty seven totwenty one in college game days each contest.
Kelly Bryant was a quarterback there andhad a career high three hundred and
sixteen passing yards and had twenty sixyards rushing, as Clemson gained six hundred
and thirteen total yards against Louisville anddefending Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson. He
(53:17):
did have a show though himself thatday, three hundred and eighty one total
yards, but two hundred of thosecame in the fourth quarter when the game
had long been decided. Yes,sorry, Lamar, those stats were padded
there in that game. Yes,we're still going to be better that Lamar
Jackson won the Heisman the previous yearwhere it should have been to Shawn Watson.
(53:37):
Oh yes, I'm still bitter aboutthat. But now what also Tiger
fans will remember about that game inLouisville twenty seventeen. That's when an unheralded
true freshman running back by the nameof Travis Eten would make his appearance with
an eighty one yard touchdown run alongon the side, and Kirk curb Street
(54:01):
would go on to say that it'sjust an embarrassment of riches with what Clemson
has on the offensive side, aswe got to see the explosiveness and they
burst with a Travis etn I wasback in two thousand and seventeen. So
overall Clemson is six and zero ingames on this date September the sixteenth,
(54:22):
with again wins in nineteen seventy eight, nineteen eighty nine, nineteen ninety five,
two thousand, two thousand and six, and two thousand and seventeen,
and obviously Tigers are hoping to putanother notch on that belt for September sixteenth
here in twenty twenty three. Thereyou go on this day. It's always
as good climbing that Lorian every singleweek and kind of go back in time
(54:45):
and it's a great piece of history. Again the series history, there's not
much here to talk about. Theyfaced off one time time two thousand and
six, fifty four to six wasthe final there Richmond, and so again
another opponent like we talked about lastweek, where there's not a lot of
history, a lot not a lotof local knowledge. But again I think
for Fau this program and it's somethingwe'll address with Ken Lavika coming up behind
(55:07):
enemy lines later in this show. He's the play by play voice of Fau.
Whenever you have a chance to comeinto Death Valley, a historically almost
impossible place to win, with theexception of a very few exceptions, the
past couple of years, it's anawesome opportunity for your program and for the
Charleston Southern guys. I know theytalked about it. For FAU, I
(55:29):
think it's going to be the samething, win or lose, to come
in here and to compete with Clemson, to put up their best effort against
a very talented Tigers team and what'sgoing to be an electric primetime environment.
Let's just face it, it's awin for the program either way. To
get Tom Herman's operation going in theright direction. Yes, And in that
one game that you talked about withthe Tigers get the fifty four to six
(55:50):
victory there. In two thousand andsix, that was the third season that
Florida Atlantic was transitioning from FCS toFBS, and so this was a team
that was in the midst of buildingthemselves into an FBS program. But it
was also during that game a portionof the Disney movie Safety was filmed about
(56:12):
the game. Yes, so thatthat was part of it. So that's
a little bit of history for thatseries game. Just that one game in
this series though. How about ourgood friend Ricky Sapp was a big part
of scoring in that game as well, forcing a fumble that led to a
touchdown somebody. The old names. This is what I love about this segment.
We go back and look at thehistory of the series and the games
and what happened on this date. You see some of these names that pop
(56:35):
back up into our our annals ofhistory here and again you see names like
Jad Deane Again, was it abig part of that game? Aaron Kelly,
Chancey Stuckey, Rindrick Taylor, somany big players in that game.
But again that was Howard Snellenberger's fauowls that in that game. I think
we've got an update down from betweenthe hedges. It looks like South Carolina
with down yeah, in the firstquarter, it's almost rapping. In the
(57:00):
first quarter of South Carolina has theball and they're up by four between the
hedges. So again hat tip totschene Beamer. I know it's not a
popular thing to say around these parts, but give credit were credits to.
They're playing tough so far. It'snot like last year. At least they're
putting up a good fight down thereon the road. And we talked about
it, could South Carolina just hangaround and if they were able to hang
around, get some positive things goingon offensively early on getting Spencer Rattler rolled
(57:23):
out and get him being able toconnect with some of his wide receivers like
Antoine Juice Wells, and he wasable to connect with him on that seventeen
yard touchdown. And so this couldbe one of those games where watch out,
you let a team hang around fora little bit, anything can happen.
And we just saw a score thatyou just showed me, John,
(57:43):
and see, I don't think ithappened. South Florida looks like they have
an early three to nothing lead againstAlabama, and I was feeling that I
was going back to the well maybetoo many times, but I did in
terms of Alabama. So on oursister station one D four nine Fox Sports
(58:04):
up State in the Fox Sports PickThem contest, I did pick Alabama because
I thought they were going to reboundand come out and play with a vengeance
and that they would win by morethan thirty two points. And right now,
okay, Alabama, it's early.I go and look, it's not
in Tuscaloosa. That's the thing. It's an awkward, hostile environment and I'm
(58:29):
sure it's one hundred percent humidity.Everybody's sweating and frustrated, and it's been
a weirder, kinder gentler Nick Sabanlately. I keep seeing this every week
where Saban has been a little morefriendly with the media and a little more
friendly with fans. And look,I don't read too much into that.
They're still tenth in the country rightnow, certainly not playing up to that
level at the moment. As Ridsaid, they're trailing three nothing. It's
(58:50):
early on. Tyler Putner's the quarterbacktwo or five twelve yards passing so far
in this game. We'll keep youupdated on that score and much much more.
Is The Englesgate Show continues coming upnext. Were joined by our good
buddy Will Vanderboard, an inside lookfrom the Clemson Insider. He'll join us
here, and then after that it'sgonna be ken La Vica at four thirty
with a Behind Enemy Lines look atFlorida Atlantic's program. I'm John Ellis,
(59:15):
that's Richmond Weaver. This is theengles Tailgate Show, brought to you by
Ingles Low Prices, Love the Savings. We're live from Little John Colisseum.
Come on and see us still fiveo'clock right here on ninety two point five
WSC. This is the Ingles TailgateShow on ninety two point five w E
s C. Now Here are yourhosts, John Ellis and Richmond Weaver,
(59:37):
heard live from Little John Coliseum. The Engles Tailgate Show contin at two point
(01:00:00):
five WSC, joined by a lotof our good friends and colleague out here,
and just so many great examples offellowship and friendship out here is the
tailgating continues live from Little John. The lot is full, the fans are
pumped, and we're pumped for youout here. Get you set, primed
and ready for what's gonna be abig primetime game for Clemson. As Tom
(01:00:20):
Herman's fau Owl's come to town, joining us now as he does every week.
A noted Steelers fan, of course, a noted coverage guru of Clemson
football first and foremost, he's theco host of the Believe In Football Clinton
Believing Clemson Football podcasts. I shouldsay he's also with a Clemson insider.
It's our good buddy Will Vandervoord withan inside look. Well, what's going
on, my friend, John? What's something? My buddy? How you
(01:00:44):
doing? I am fantastic, Iyou know, look just but without further
ado, let's talk NFL for justa second, your Steelers, I felt
for you last week, my friend. I know my Panthers, they had
a tough week. But those Steelers, what happened in San Francisco just happened.
Is that what it was? Imean, San Francisco's pretty darn good
team, So give them credit.Obviously we got pumped, and that's okay.
(01:01:07):
But you know, I think youknow, you learn how far you
got to go. Because I thinkSan Francisco as a super Bowl contender,
and I think we saw that inWeek one. If they stay healthy,
I think they can be as goodas anybody in the NFL. So we'll
see you see this week against theSun and his guys. Long season,
long season, we'll see how itgoes. And again long season in the
college football ranks as well as you'vealready seen and will I know you've seen
(01:01:30):
this. Two Florida States survived upat Chestnut Hill today. I don't know
if you've got to see a littlebit of that game. It's some of
the early thoughts on what happened therein that game is it relates to the
entire spectrum of not only acc play, but you know, the Jordan Travis
situation, the injury anty update youcan provide on that, and just some
analysis from what you saw in thatgame. Yeah, I mean I watched
(01:01:52):
this whole thing, and Jordan Traviswas it was obvious that they did not
want to use him at all inthe run game, so they took up
that tech a big part of FloridStates offensive way. I think that's why
you saw him kind of struggle there, especially in the last half of the
second second half. So that's gonnabe interesting because you know, if he's
(01:02:12):
not involved in the run game, that's gonna play well the Clemson's defense next
week. So something definitely the watchas we go on through this week.
But you know, Boston College kindof shot themselves in the foot, had
a chance to get the ball backlate and had a face mask eighteen penalties.
Let me say that again. Wow, eighteen penalties for Boston College in
that game, and it really costthem that game. Obviously, thirty one
twenty nine VCS probably has an argumentthat they should have won the game.
(01:02:37):
Do you know what they didn't.They didn't make the play that you need
to make the win games, andFlorida State did just enough. As we're
talking with Will Vanderboard. He isthe premier writer there for the Clemson Insider
and of course the co host ofthe Believe in Clemson Football podcast. Will,
let's look back at what happened lastweek against Charleston Southern. We're going
(01:02:58):
to get to so many of whatthe positives were, of course in the
second half of that game. Butyou know, the standard is high here
at Clemson, and in the firsti'd say twenty to twenty five minutes of
that game, at least play clockand game clockwise, it was not up
to that quote standard. What wasthe initial reaction from coach Swinney after the
game and what was the PostScript duringthe week as you broke that game down,
(01:03:21):
I'm sorry, John, if youcould ask you again, it broke
up on me. I'm sorry,I can ask that again. I'm a
radio professional. Let's go through thisone more time, Will Vanderboard. The
game yet the game last week, you get no, you're a good man,
Charleston Southern ugly game. Early on, it got a little easier as
they went about Well, what wasyour takeaway from some of the early struggles
in that game. Well, itwas just that Davo has been saying all
(01:03:43):
week. They just got to doa better job taking care of football.
I think it's real simple. WillShip has said in the interviews this week
that you know, if they takecare of the football, they can beat
anybody in the country. He believesthat he's like, where as talented as
anybody in the country. We haveeverything you need, could be a great
team, except we're not taking careof football. And the numbers don't lie.
(01:04:04):
He's right about that. I mean, twenty two turnovers in the last
nine games, dating back to lastyear. I believe in four of those
games they've committed at least three turnovers. They've lost, they've lost the turnover
battle, and eight of those ninegames only the ACC championship games the only
one they didn't they won that actuallythree to nothing. So it really comes
(01:04:27):
down to just taking care of thefootball. It wasn't anything Charles the Southern
did last week, just like itwasn't anything Duke did this Clupson just didn't
take care of the ball in thosein those situations and it cost them against
Duke, and if they were playinganybody else last week, it probably would
have cost them last weeks as well. But the good news John was that
kay club Nick showed that he bouncesback pretty good from negative plays. I
(01:04:53):
almost say Djer was not that way. Well, you know, you know,
you look at last year DJ whenhe you get people an understanding when
he fumbled against Syracuse, DJ wasnever the same player again. And after
that fumble, never was the sameplayer again. Where you look at Kaye
last week, he makes that picksix, he comes out and throws four
(01:05:13):
touchdown passes and goes through three hundredand fifteen yards after that. So he
kind of showed this resiliency and whatDavo talked about that he kind of bounced
his back quick and he doesn't letone play effect this whole day. And
inside looked with Will Vanderbord here onthe Engles Tailgate show. You can catch
his work of course at Steeler Willon x Twitter whatever we're calling that app
these days. I'll leave it upto the pundits to decide that, Hey,
(01:05:36):
it looked on a positive note.We kind of got this information here,
at least I did earlier today. And maybe you knew this too.
Than one hundred and seventeen Tigers playedin this game. I guess unofficially that's
the record for the program, andcertainly it gets the program like Charleston Southern.
You get an opportunity to do thatonce you stabilize your team. And
(01:05:56):
I thought it was important will toget that many guys in there. We
know the story with injuries with thisteam over the past couple of years.
How important was it for even thisopponent, I know, to get some
of those guys some quality reps earlyon, it was very important. You
get him out there and you getthem for playing time. You get them
feeling good about themselves too, gainingconfidence, you know. And it also
(01:06:19):
Davo shows and his things. Hetells all his players this when the time
he recruits them. Listen, ifyou come in and you play hard,
you're gonna get an opportunity to play. And he proves that when he plays
those guys in those situations. Heplays that many players. He's been that
way tired tenure at Clemson and sonot surprised at all that they set a
(01:06:41):
record last week. Davo guys manyguys as he could end to play because
he rewards them because they those guysgo through camp, they're there for spring
practice, they're there every day liftingweights, doing Matt drills. All those
things. They deserve to get inthere and play as just as much as
the starters do. As we're talkingwith Will vander Vord the insider and Will
(01:07:01):
even looking at the wide receiver position, and obviously that's been a talking point
from preseason to now into the seasonand questions about Kenn News receivers get separation,
and there's been now the narrative thatit looks like there have been some
openings there was Kate able to findsome of these guys, but one guy
in particular, Bow Collins, getsin the end zone. And how important
(01:07:25):
do you think it is for Boucollinsto be that alpha type of guy alongside
Antonio Williams, for Kate Clubnick tohave those weapons. Absolutely well, nobody's
happier to see Bo Collins make playsand Antonio Williams because he's getting double teamed
and bracketed and everything. So thereare defenses are really forcing club Nick's hand
(01:07:45):
to go to other people. Sobut for Bou Collins to come there and
make some plays, now you've gotto pay attention a little bit. Obviously
he's gonna do wonders for his confidence, especially he's been injury injured, riddled
the last two years. He's aguy we've seen him make plays before.
It's not surprising to see Bou Collinsmake some plays. They just need him
to stay healthy. And bo Collinsstays healthy, I think he can be
(01:08:08):
a big time weapon for Clemson. He's not gonna be a you know,
a new Copins or Sammy Watkins, but he can be a really good player,
dependable receiver, which is what Clemsonhasn't really had other than Antonio Williams
the last couple of years. Soif you get another guy to be that,
I think that's huge. Also, troys to a Lotto coming in last
week. If he stays healthy andhe can be a playmaker, now you're
(01:08:30):
talking about two to three guys thatare really good. Speech there's you know,
when you throw in the freshman TylerBrown as well to go with Antonio
Williams, I mean, then youthrow in bow Collins and now you've got
yourself a pretty formidable receiving corps thatcan make plays for you. So that
was huge last week to kind oflist his confidence. It was good for
troys to a Lotto to get outthere and make some plays so he can
(01:08:50):
see, hey, I can dothis, I can get out here and
be productive and help the team out. I thought a lot of positive things
were taken away from that that gamelast week. Charles. So then now,
granted, yes, Charlotton, someof them is not Florida State,
but you still got to go outthere and make the plays. And you
give him credit for doing that,no question about it. And you mentioned
one guy that I had my eyeson, will and that's Tyler Brown.
(01:09:13):
He looks like a guy that seemscomfortable out there and the game. He's
understanding the speed of this game.Your thoughts on Tyler Brown, Yeah,
I mean he's he's he's been thetalk of camp. You know, he
came out. You know, he'sa uncle kid from Greenville, I believe,
and came out and just he's he'sjust been killing it. And you
(01:09:33):
know, the coaches are really excitedabout him. They think he's got a
chance to be pretty good. Andhe's shown that the first couple of games.
I think you'll see a little bitmore of that to day. They're
going to trust him a little bitmore. He's a guy that they can
bring in and now as he continuesto be productive, you can do some
different things with Antonio Williams because nowyou have another slot guy. It's a
(01:09:54):
lot of the same thing, right. So, but he's been I've been
really impressed with him so far.Seems to run good, Chris Broute seems
to have good hands, all thestuff we heard during camp. Will vanderb
is a guest here live on theIngles Tailgate Show. You can find his
work at Steeler Will on Twitter xapp there keeping it family friendly. You
(01:10:16):
know you're on the FCC regulated wEESC right now. But Wade wood As
has a certain motto. We can'tsay what it is, you know what
it is, but talk about whata moment that was for him. I
think he's liking himself that Will Shipleyfor a minute, and he looked a
little bit like a guy that couldplay running back in this conference. What
a moment for Wade getting the picksix in that game. Yeah. Well,
(01:10:39):
also, what a moment for JadenLucas to lay the wood right,
I mean he's the one that causedthe ball to pop out, right.
And then of course wood As,you know, just being what you're supposed
to. What we talked about lastweek, right, guys, that defense
that you got a bunch of guysthat are really really good, but they
weren't playing collectively, so they're playingindividually. Well, last week you saw
(01:11:00):
him play collectively, and you sawand they played collectively. Stuff like that
happened, and you saw Woodash trailingon the play he was running to the
football, the balls jarred loose.Hello, I got myself a nice early
Christmas present. Let's go take itto the house. And how about the
block. I believe it was EremiaTrotter or Barrett Carter, I can't remember
which one it was, but theyjust leveled one of the guys out there
(01:11:23):
and just kind of cleared the pathfor him to go to the end zone.
So, and that's what you're supposedto do on defense. You get
the turnover and then everybody start blocking, go find somebody to get to get
the guy in the end zone. That's what it's supposed to be. Man,
I love it. You know,I'm a defensive guy, so I
was kind of enjoying that. Enjoyedthe hit. I enjoyed the way they
carried him into the end zone withthe blocks and stuff. Man, that
(01:11:44):
is that is team defense. Andthat's what we mean when you hear we
say they need to play team defenseand they need to play a collective unit.
That's a great example of doing that. Swarm into the football they were
and they've got to do it againtonight against FAU. Just get about sixty
seconds left with you will your perspectiveon this FAU program with Tom Herman coming
in, and what defines success forClinson tonight other than just getting to win
(01:12:06):
in this game, Well, takecare of the football, I think here,
But you know, let's just uh. I think Dabo said it best.
He's like, you know, hetold kay pleasant listen, we got
a defense that's got a chance tobe pretty special. We need to make
sure we're helping them out. We'replaying football together. We're not doing things
(01:12:29):
that's gonna hurt our defense. We'renot putting our defense in bad situations.
And I think that's what I wantto see from the offense tonight, that
they're playing smart football and they're notdoing anything that's gonna hurt the defense.
Because that defense is gonna win youa lot of games this year, it
really is, and they just needto make sure they're not doing anything that's
gonna cause the hurt the defense. And you know where a guy's picking up
a fumble and running it all theway to the one yard line. You
(01:12:51):
can't blame that on the defense.Or the pick six that happened, you
can't blame that on the defense, right, So, I think that's kind
of what I want to see tonightout of them, And I want to
see the defense continue to play collectiveteam football on the defensive side of the
ball and run to the football andbe aggressive. I'm those are the two
things I'm looking for, other thanwinning the game obviously. Well, yeah,
that comes first and foremost, nodoubt. Will Vandervoort is the co
(01:13:14):
host of the Believe in Clemson Footballpodcast Will von Kirkland. You can hear
it every single week wherever podcasts areavailable. You can also find his work
at the Clemson Insider dot com. It's been an inside look with mister Will
Hey. As always, best ofluck to your Steelers on Monday night.
Is they're splitting time with my Pantherson that Monday night doubleheader thing. I
know you're gonna get all the attentionin the world, but I know you
don't like the Browns too much.Good luck to you in that game.
(01:13:36):
Yeah, I know. Clemson fans. I want to hear this, but
I hope Pitsford really has Tshaun onhis back all night. Oh boy,
here we go. We'll see whathappens in that game. Will Vanderborg,
You're too kind man. We'll seeyou next time here with an inside look
coming up next shift Gears Behind EnemyLines with our good friend Ken Lavika.
He's the play by play voice forFlorida Atlantic and we're gonna talk about this
(01:13:57):
FAU program with him. Coming upin just a few minutes. This is
the Engles Tailgate Show, brought toyou by Ingles low prices, love the
savings at Ingles dash markets dot commuch more as we come to your life
from Little John Coliseum ninety two pointfive WSC. It's time to go behind
enemy lines. I'll close their lookat Clemson's opponent with our special weekly guest
(01:14:24):
with us scoop on what the Tigerswe'll face this week. Let's get the
four one one. Here's John Ellis. Welcome back to the Ingles Tailgate Show,
live here from Little John Coliseum, getting your primed and ready for a
big Clemson game, Folks who geta big one coming to town, Florida
Atlantic is in town with Tom Hermanand company. Kickoff at eight pm right
(01:14:45):
here on ninety two point five wSC. We go behind enemy lines now
getting you a set for Clemson's bigopponent tonight. It's programmed that's up and
coming, got a lot of positivesgoing on right now. It's Ken la
Vica play by play voice for FAYou Ken, thanks for joining us,
my friend, John, my pleasure. Thanks for having me brother. It's
no problem. You can find Kenas always on Twitter, the x app
(01:15:06):
whatever we're calling it these days atKLV one oh six three. He's also
doing a ton of radio down thereat ESP and West Palm, just to
get plug in on that as well. Ken, you've been too kind of
join us here and looking forward toa big matchup. FAU is an interesting
program the Alice. Of course,we'll talk some basketball later in the interview.
What'll run it was last season, but Tom Herman at the Helm,
(01:15:28):
now, if you could take usbehind the curtain and talk about a very
high profile coach coming in and takingover this program. Yeah. Tom Herman
is the third in a consecutive lineof high profile coaches, and it started
with Lane Kiffin in twenty seventeen. He won Conference USA titles in two of
his three years and went off thewhole miss. Then it was three years
(01:15:48):
of Willie Taggart after his dismissal fromFlorida State and now Florida Atlantic in a
new conference, the American basically takingUCF spot with them departing to the Big
twelve. And that's where Tom Hermancomes in and coach Herman has talked about
how he took a couple of yearsafter his many still believed to be fairly
(01:16:10):
blash dismissal from Texas just needed tostep away, spend a year with the
Bears, and then was in broadcastinga year ago and realized I want to
get back into coaching and started toput out feelers and when the Florida Atlantic
job came available, it was agreat opportunity for him. Already with a
cachet of talent at his disposal,a lot of athletes, speed guys on
his FAU team, knew that hewasn't gonna have to rebuild coming in.
(01:16:35):
He could start building it in hisown vision, but also use what was
already there to create a competitive teamand competitive program. And so it's been
it's been a good fit so far, Tom Herman and Fau. There are
certainly resources at Florida Atlantic that he'sable to tap into immediately, and so
far it's still a feeling out process, but I think he's encouraged those go
(01:16:56):
to football to come. Kim Levikiis the play by play voice for Fayui.
Joins us here on the Ingles HotLine Live on the Ingles Tailgate Show,
and you look at some of theconnections here. Tom Herman of course
has his quarterback from the old days, Casey Thompson with him, who opened
up the season with five touchdowns againstMonmouth, a bit of a struggle last
week against Ohio. Talk about thisquarterback who has some considerable experience playing for
(01:17:20):
this head coach. Yeah, CaseyThompson is going to be someone who is
not going to be overwhelmed by theenvironment at Clemson. And he's done it
at Texas, he did it atin Nebraska, and so, as you
said, able to link up withhis former head coach Tom Herman in his
(01:17:41):
final year of college football, CaseyThompson very poised. He had an offseason
shoulder procedure while he was still underscholarship at Nebraska. Then decided to hit
the portal, was able to rehabin Boca Ratonne and then participate in all
fall camp, and it only tookhim a couple of weeks to win the
starting job. Last week week forhim after the five touchdowns that you had
(01:18:01):
talked about against Modernmouth, But abig part of that is that his best
deep threat, to Quan Burton, was injured on the first play from scrimmage,
got knocked unconscious, actually lost acouple of teeth on the play as
well, and so FAU receivers hada tough time separating from a very good
Ohio defense that played for a MACchampionship a year ago. And the numbers
(01:18:24):
are a bit deceptive simply because therewas not a whole lot for Casey Thompson
to be able to explore down thefield, and FAUS hoping that they've corrected
some of those issues heading into tonight'sgame. But it's definitely nice to have
a veteran presence under center. FloridaAtlantic goes from former Miami quarterback to Cocy
Perry, who was a strong veteranpresence right into Casey Thompson. So experienced
(01:18:48):
quarterbacks have certainly been a nice benefitOver the last several seasons at fau Ken,
there's been a player who's been mentioneda lot. Dabo Swinney talked about
him this week, Legonta Wester, who was named to the Horning watch list
of course earlier last month, andboy, he's got some speed on him.
Talk about what he brings not onlyto the offense, but special teams
wise as well. Swiney was talkingabout him as a guy to highlight in
(01:19:11):
this game if you're an opponent, which Clemson is in this particular instance,
talk about the speedster leg Wester there. Yeah, Legente Wester is the number
one receiver even with a healthy JaquanBurden, who I mentioned. Wester is
so quick and a season ago itwas a little bit of a battle with
his hands where he's not looking theball into his hands before he's trying to
(01:19:34):
take off with those ultra talented, speedy legs. But that has seemed to
rectify itself this year and Wester isnow in a full time return role.
In addition to being the quote unquotenumber one receiver, he's somewhat that actually
was born and raised in the samehometown of Willie Tackard, and that was
(01:19:55):
the initial connection, the relationship, the tag it's knew. The Western is
very well. That's how Legonte andnow his brother at FAU plays on the
defensive side of the ball. Endedup at Florida Atlantic and Tom Ferman once
he took over, certainly took noticeof Wester and how versatile he is.
And you're going to see him anawful lot tonight, number one on that
(01:20:17):
white uniform there on the field atClemson. And he's extremely quick. He
certainly has accs speed. He'll certainlylook like from a speed standpoint, he
fits in with everybody on the field. Yeah, speed is a key in
this game. A couple of teamswho have a ton of it. Here
FAU take it on Clemson tonight, eight pm. In Death Valley. We
(01:20:38):
got Ken la Vica, the playby play voice for FAU, joining us
here on the Engles tailgate show.Defensively, just give us a broad overview,
Ken, if you will, ofwho to look for some of the
key contributors not only in the frontbut in the secondary for FAU so far
this season, Sure no problem. If any secondary is a bit banged up.
One of the five team captains, amani Eli Adams is maybe done for
(01:21:00):
the season they're holding I hope theycould get him late in the year,
but he suffered a fracture in oneof his legs against Ohio. That was
after he suffered a concussion in Weekones, or really tough first two weeks
for Armoni Eli Adams a veteran butvery capable backup safeties on the back yet
including number zero Dwight Toombs, whowas a local product from Palm Meats County
and the Treasure Coast where FA.He was located here in the southeastern portion
(01:21:26):
of Florida in South Florida, sothat's going to be something to look out
for. Defensively, though, itis all like most defenses, but especially
with FA, you predicated up frontwith what the defensive line can do and
especially the nose tackle in this threefour scheme. Evan Anderson he's number eight,
but he's so big it looks likea zero on his uniform. He
(01:21:46):
is a massive human being. Threethirty five Florida native. He actually played
lacrosse when he was in high school. Imagine that someone lumbering around at three
forty three forty five playing lacrosse inhigh school. But he was priority number
one for Tom Herman to lockdown whenhe got to Bulca Richone because, as
you can imagine, a lot ofPower five schools were coming calling with a
(01:22:10):
coaching change for Evan Anderson, andEvan placed himself to Tom Herman. Tom
Herman has absolutely relied on Evan Andersonup front in the defense against Ohio against
one of the best quarterbacks in thenation, was really really strong last week.
Certainly a lot of positives to goaround. There's a lot of team
speed as you'd imagine. The linebackingcorps led by number three Eddie Williams Key
(01:22:30):
is able to cover sideline to sideline. He's good against the run as well.
Faus defense is much improved from ayear ago where they really struggled,
especially against the run. Anderson upfront, he really is the anchor of
this thing. Can we talk aboutthe challenge each week of teams coming into
Death Valley Memorial stadi here Clemson notan easy place to play historically for road
(01:22:54):
teams, especially when it's a littleunfamiliar, but it's also an opportunity and
talk about the coach Herman angle ofthis as well. The opportunity presents itself
for not only a guy who's beenon the big stage before, but trying
to convince these players not only physically, but emotionally and mentally, Hey,
we can play up to the levelof the competition here. Talk about the
message this week leading up to thisgame in terms of meeting that challenge.
(01:23:15):
Yeah, and that has been reallya major storyline down here. I'm glad
you brought that up. Now.This is the second trip that FAU has
ever made to Clemson. First timearound, when Howard Stellenberger was still the
head coach, it didn't go well. That was a different time in college
football. And I was talking withcoach Herman this week about how it's just
(01:23:36):
a little bit different these days becausethe transfer portal is so active. You
do have more players than you everhave before that are used to environments like
this. So Tom Leman's not concernedabout this team coming in and being overwhelmed
by the lights and the fans andthe orange and all that stuff. A
lot of these guys, including hisquarterback most important player, have all seen
(01:23:58):
and done that coming in and tryingto do too much to prove a point.
There's no reason for that. AndTom Herman used the word multiple times
this week. Fun just go havefun. It was a tough loss last
week. Let's go out, let'sball, Let's have fun. That's no
disrespect to Clenson, certainly no disrespectto Davos Sweeney. But what's the point
(01:24:19):
of playing this game If you're notgoing to go out, You're not going
to have fun and you're not goingto attempt to take advantage and relish the
opportunity. So that's the biggest thingtonight for this team is just go out,
have fun, flow ball, whichis not something that they did against
Ohio a week ago. And andI think that that everything else works itself
(01:24:41):
out. A FAU thinks they cancome in and they can at least show
a bit more explosiveness than they didagainst Ohio. But again, more than
anything, just go have fun andrelish the opportunity. Knowing you're playing a
very, very, very good program, one of the best in the country.
He's Kim Lavika, he's the playby play voice for FAU Athletics.
And you're talking about having fun.I've got to ask you quickly. I
(01:25:02):
know it's football season, we're talkingabout the Final four experience, and it
was a heartbreaking finish, but mygoodness, what a storyline that was we
were talking about a NonStop on ourafternoon shows here on Fox Sports Upstate.
I heard radio and my goodness, just take us behind the curtain if you
can, from it and from yourperspective, your lens. What was it
like chronicling every single moment of them? Yeah, I gotta say it was,
(01:25:26):
and I mean this in all honesty, John, it was. It
was the arguably the best six months, seven months of my life. It
was. I've been I've been atFAU for seventeen years, and from a
basketball standpoint, it was never ablip on the radar. This has always
been a football school. This hasalways been football passion here in South Florida.
Obviously that's the number one sport. This didn't come out of nowhere,
(01:25:50):
per se. Dusty May, whois now heading into a six season as
head and coach, had come inand it had been steady improvement every year.
Florida Atlantic nearly hit twenty wins ayear ago. They had won conference
tournament games. But everything sort ofcame together with this group last year and
to go into the tournament like FAUdid with thirty one victories and they had
(01:26:13):
in at large, birth pretty muchlocked up going into the final two weeks
of the regular season. That inand of itself based on FAUS basketball history
where in seventeen years I had calledjust two years of above five hundred basketball
before Dusty May came in, thatwas good enough. Hey, this is
awesome. This is a great year. Right. And so then FAU goes
wins the Conference USA Tournament. Andafter that win against Memphis at the last
(01:26:39):
second, the game winning lap fromNick Boyd and Columbus, you sort of
thought to yourself, something might behappening here, because then they played fairly
Dickens in it would upset Perdue. But to have everything culminated in New York
City, at that place at MadisonSquare Garden, beat Tennessee and handle them
after they had bullied Duke, andthen that epic game against Kansas State,
(01:27:00):
it was because it was FAU basketball. I never in my life dreamed that
anything like that could ever happen.I mean, it was just to get
to the tournament was hey, Ican walk away happy. Now you go
all the way to the final fourand come a tenth of a second away
from playing for the national championship. As you can imagine with everybody coming back,
(01:27:23):
including the head coach. Nobody gotpoached out of the portal. There
are heavy, heavy, heavy expectationsin FAU basketball. I had experienced two
sellouts in a three thousand seed arenain seventeen years, and now it's going
to be the most expensive ticket inSouth Florida once college basketball season starts.
Well, I think we've met anew friend behind enemy lines. Here.
(01:27:44):
It's Ken Leviko, with some greatstories on FAU basketball, the magic run
they had last year, but alsosome great insight on this Tom Hermit led
football team that takes on the ClemsonTigers tonight. Right here in Death Valley,
Ken is always thanks for your time, my friend, have a good
call tonight. John appreciates you.Thank you. There he goes. Ken
la Vica, the play by playvoice of the FAU Al's joining us here
(01:28:04):
on the Ingles Tailgate Show. Muchmore after this right here on ninety two
point five w E SC. Thisis the Ingles Tailgate Show on ninety two
point five w E s E.We've got a nice blanket of clouds rolling
(01:28:34):
in here, a nice little scenehere the middle of September. It's a
primetime game. It's Clemson. It'sfau It's the Ingles Tailgate Show, brought
to you by Ingles Low Prices, love the savings Ingles dash markets dot Com.
Just update you on a couple ofscores before we make our final picks
here and turn it over to theClemson Athletic Networks Ingles Tiger Tailgate Show,
(01:28:57):
which will be a part of yourmomentarily. I want to let you know
that South Carolina is currently leading Georgiabetween the headges and they're driving right now
seven to three. The first halfis winding down there in the red zone.
We'll keep you posted on that ifending happens. And Nick Sapan,
it's not enjoying life. Today's notdown there against South Florida and Tampa.
It's a weather delay. It's threenothing South Florida leading right now. But
(01:29:19):
weather delay is a very kind wayto say monsoon because what we're seeing down
there, yes, and it seemsto be wreaking havoc offensively for new quarterback
Tyler Buckner that got the opportunity tostart instead of Jayleen Milrow there, and
it's interesting to see that Alabama justoffensively cannot get anything going. And as
(01:29:41):
much as you want to say Weather, I'm sorry, that's not all on
Weather right there. For Alabama notto get any points there in that first
quarter against South Florida. No,it's a tough adjust But every time you
lose your Heisman winning star quarterback thatmoves on to the NFL, as they
did with Bryce Young, now it'stime to reload and and regroup from there.
We'll see if Alabama does that.Nobody here will loose sleep over that
(01:30:03):
certainly as Clemson gets ready for FAU. What are some of the keys for
you to this big game tonight forClemson. Yeah, I think we've already
heard several times, just even fromWill Vandervoort, and we've talked about it.
Just play a clean game here canwe have from a Tiger fans perspective,
game when there's no turnovers, nougly turnovers. You know, obviously
(01:30:25):
turnovers can happen in the game, but it's the ugly turnovers that you know,
the pick six is, the fumblerecoveries that go down to the one
yard line, those type of thingsthat are just backbreakers, the miss field
goals, you missed opportunities, thosetype of things. You just want a
clean game. You don't have togo out there and score sixty points,
but you do have to go outthere and impose your will on this team
(01:30:47):
at Florida Atlantic, and continuing thestoryline what we've talked about, how upsets
can occur. Can you have thingswhere you hang around, and we just
see that South Carolina is hanging around. They score right here against the Georgia
Bulldogs. Now have an opportunity togo up fourteen to three right before half.
George's run out of NFL defenders apparentlythey're all in Philadelphia company, and
(01:31:12):
that South Carolina running the ball torun down right there, and we know
the offensive line has been an issuefor the game Cox, but they're able
to get that touchdown right there andnow have an opportunity for the extra point.
Coach Biemer's pumped up about that one, as he should be still a
long way to go. Is JuiceWells is hurting that game? But Xavier
Legetto's having a big time game downthere as he has all season. I'm
(01:31:33):
gonna go final score here and I'llget yours in a minute. I'm gonna
go forty two seventeen Clemson against FAU. I've got a lot of respect for
Tom Herman, who's great to catchup with Ken La Vica there from the
FAU network. I just think it'sgonna be about tight end production. We
haven't seen that much yet. JakeBrennan still get in the mix a little
bit early and often and again turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Have you said,
(01:31:53):
let's stay clean? If for Clemsonplay at a high level, what
you got for a final score,my friend? Yeah, I'm going thirty
eight to ten, and so we'renot too far off. And no,
no, I think it could bea situation where the Tigers actually come out
and take care of business pretty earlyand then it's somewhat of a slower game
there in the second half for theTigers. We will see what happens.
And by the way, next weekwe'll be here at seven am airtime for
(01:32:15):
the Florida State Games two point fiveWSC for Ken La Vica for our good
friend Will Vandervoord for Trey Falco producingthis fine show for Richmond Weaver. I'm
