Ninety two point five W E,S E AM and FM Greenville, Spartanburg
Anderson. We're talking Clemson Tigers andgetting you ready for a college football Saturday.
And this Hingles Tailgate Show is broughtto you by Ingles Markets, Low
Prices, Love the Savings, BlueRidge Electric Cooperative, Harley Davidson of Greenville
(00:20):
Career Flooring Center, the Surgery Centerat Pelham, Magee Heating in Air and
pal Meadow State Armory. Now hereare your hosts, John Ellis and Richmond
Weavers. Well, it was eightyears ago today or this week at least,
(00:41):
where Notre Dame came in to fightoff Clemson for the first time in
what was the bring your own gutsgame for Clemson. And now as we
sit here in the first week inNovember, it's a gut check time for
these Tigers. Is there? Fourand four coming off a tough loss to
NC State at their back home totake on the fighting Irish in a game
that means a lot on many levelsfor both teams. It's the Ingles Tailgate
(01:04):
Show, brought to you by ourfriends at Ingles Markets. I'm John Ellis,
that's Richmond Weaver. We are cold, but we are out here enjoying
the November tailgate with our friends hereRichmond. How are you doing this week,
buddy? I am layered up.Yeah, so I am good.
Some people will say, oh,lathered up, No, I'm layered up
this morning as we are here rightoutside Little John Coliseum and is a brisk
(01:27):
morning. Obviously nice and chilly outhere, but we do know that it's
going to get a little bit warmer. It's going to be a picture perfect
day in the Valley for the ClemsonTigers. And I know we can look
at the record four and four forthe Tigers at this football season, but
don't let that damper your fun andexcitement today because this is a great opportunity
(01:47):
for some fantastic college football because NotreDame is coming into the valley and it
doesn't happen that often. And yes, you reference that twenty fifteen game byog
and one of the daboisms that reallywent viral in it seemed to be the
spark that we started seeing obviously alot of daboi isms across the landscape of
(02:09):
college athletics. And I would haveto say, at least this day is
a better from the weather. I'lltake this cold versus that monsoon, that
hurricane that we had in fifteen, but it didn't matter. Even back then,
the stadium was packed the stadium.Nobody was going to stay away with
Notre Dame coming into the to thevalley, and hopefully fans will be here
(02:32):
today and jam pack this stadium becausethere still is a lot to play for
this season. You have an opportunityto finish out b Bowl eligible. You
have an opportunity. Finished at eightand four in the regular season, obviously
not what a lot of Tiger fanswanted and not what Dabo Sweeney wanted.
We know that. But can youcome back here today and use this game
(02:53):
as a springboard to finish out theseason strong. That's the idea here.
You know, being four and four, it's not ideal. It's out where
they're used to being in this program. But Bowl eligibility still looms for Clemson.
You need a couple more and there'sonly what four games left here,
so the opportunities are few and farbetween to get that last win or those
last two wins you need, andthat's unusual territory. We'll talk about where
(03:15):
this program is right now in termsof at least in recent memory, Richmond
uncharted Waters going through some tough times. Here we heard our well, I
wouldn't say our friend, but everybody'snew friend now. Tyler from Spartanburg this
week call in the Tiger Calls andhe had some opinions and Coach Swinney went
old testament on him, as hesaid, we'll get to that in a
minute. Here. We've also gotwill Vandervoort joining us in about ten minutes
(03:37):
and inside look with Will Vandervoard fromthe Clemson Insider. He'll give us a
little more detail in terms of whatto expect today against a very good Notre
Day team on both sides of thebattle. And defensively, boy, you
better bring your own guts, youbetter bring everything against this defense because they
are so good. Of course,we can't do this show without reflecting on
what happened last week. We alwaystry to break down the macro and the
(03:59):
micro on this show, and themicro problem with this team continues to be
turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. There'sa lot to look at with what happened
at NC State last week. Whoare now five feet five and three,
I should say two and two inthe conference, Clemson falling to four and
four, a twenty four to seventeenloss in which, look MJ. Morris
give them credit eleven of twenty onehundred and thirty eight yards of a pair
(04:20):
of touchdowns, but they only hadtwo hundred yards of offense, whereas Clemson's
defense is out there battling. It'sall about turnovers again and kay club nick
picked off for the pick six.Let's just start with once again the story
of the turnovers. It's been thestory all season, not just turnovers,
but points off of turnovers for theother team. Points off of turnovers has
(04:40):
been such a huge part of theseason and why Clemson is sitting there four
and four, and John, We'vetalked about it several times. Not all
turnovers are created equal, that's right, and that's the unfortunate thing for Tigers
right now is that the untimely turnoversalso and just how they have led to
points and even from a perspective ofpoints off of turnovers where the opposing offense
(05:05):
is able to capitalize on the turnoverand score. But more importantly, what
has hurt the Tigers is the defensecreating the turnover and immediately scoring right off
of those They're getting defensive touchdowns there, and that's what's been a big part
because you know how demoralizing and devastatinga pick six can be. And obviously
(05:28):
in this game against NC State,a tipped pass pick six and how is
it possible that it just happens tofall in the hands of the best player
on the field at the time.Peyton Wilson talked about it all the way
back, Yes, and he's ableto score that touchdown there, and that
was obviously a big part of thatgame. And it seems just big plays
(05:49):
also have hurt Tigers right now.And I think that's one of the things
that we're seeing obviously in the NCState game, the pick six, what
we just talked about, but Caseyconception on just big plays that the Tigers
gave up, and that was thetheme of it. You only you give
up two hundred yards total offense. So that is a dominating performance when you're
(06:13):
able to hold a team to twohundred yards. But it was two big
plays there for NC State on theoffensive side that seemed to cast the shadow
over the Tigers being able to win. On Saturday last week was a nightmre
in the third quarter. I've seenthis with teams over the years i've covered
the Carolina Panthers come to mind whenthey have these slumps. In these moments,
the third quarter seems to be thebugaboo and Clemson, you know Deablos
(06:36):
when he has talked about that middleeight of the game, the last four
minutes of the second quarter, inthe first four minutes of the third quarter
just have not been kicking into highgear for this team this year. You
look at what happened concept gian Asyou mentioned nine yard touchdown pass for Morris
to start the game at seven tonothing and then Norvisen gets the field goal
for ency State ten nothing, MafAone yard running. You love to see
(06:57):
that drive nine plays seventy five yardsthey get back with in three before halftime.
But again the third quarter you mentionedthe tip pass Peyton Wilson, their
best player I think on either sideof the ball for NC State fifteen yard
interception return and again points off turnoversbeing crucial, and Richard was at that
point and we know concept she Onhad the seventy two yard pass against a
cover zero blitz, which you know, if you're the cornerback there, pride,
(07:19):
you've got to come up and makethat tackle and he didn't do it.
When you get down seventeen to sevenright now, if you're Clemson,
it shouldn't feel like that's insurmountable. But with as bad as they've been in
the red zone again, they've hadlike upwards of the most trips in the
red zone in the country right now, but they're like near last in terms
of red zone efficiency. When theygot down seventeen seven, I said to
(07:41):
myself, this doesn't feel like itcan happen for Clemson. And then twenty
four to seven, that's almost Insurmountable'llgive them credit. Film Maffa comes back
with a one yard touchdown run andthen Whites adds the field goal late there,
nineteen yards where they had another opportunityto get in the end zone in
a misshot from k Klubnick. Butagain they fought back, but he just
seven points. That's just too muchto overcome for this team that Clemson has
(08:01):
a lot of explosive plays on offense, but they cannot score enough points well,
and you talk about the red zoneinefficiencies. They're getting to the red
zone, it's just they can't capitalize. Yes, they're actually when you look
at it statistically, they're one ofthe best in the nation as far as
getting into the red zone, andthen they're one of the worst in the
nation in terms of being able toscore within the red zone. And we're
(08:24):
talking about touchdowns. You have toscore touchdowns when you're getting into the red
zone, and especially when Clemson's gettinginside the five yard line. And I
think that was indicative of what wesaw how the season has played out.
We saw that in the last fewminutes of the game against ennc State,
because they had those opportunities, andwe loved seeing the opportunity of film offa
(08:46):
getting the ball down there at theone yard line and being able to convert.
And then the head scratching thing occurswhen you're there once again at the
one and a half yard line, two yard line, whatever you want to
call it, and it's third downand you're down at that point, but
can you score a touchdown? Andyou're right back in this game, and
obviously knowing that you're going to haveto have more than just a field goal,
(09:11):
you're going to have to have atouchdown at some point. And I
still contend that it seems like Clemsonshould have been able to look at that
opportunity and Obviously Dabosweeny, Garrett Riley, the offensive staff, they know much
more, way more than we do. And Dabosweeny had talked about it.
He knew at least he needed toget some points right there. But having
(09:33):
the opportunity if you had Phil MafAhad two one yard runs for touchdowns,
they couldn't stop him. He's sogreat after contact. Why wouldn't you have
Phil MafA be your guy right there? You got two shots third down,
fourth down, if you need itto score a touchdown, and to have
a play throwing it to the cornerof the end zone for a percent way
(09:54):
very low percentage, because we haven'tseen that from Clemson this year that often,
because Clemson doesn't really have those tHiggins, those Mike Williams, those
guys that can go high point itthat jump ball and get that. And
I also contend, if you're goingto run that play, why wouldn't you
put six y five Jake Brennan stoolthere and allow him to box out that
cornerback right there and then go upand get the ball rather than an Adam
(10:18):
Randall. And this is nothing againstAdam Randall, because we know he's very
talented but we just haven't seen Clemsonbe able to utilize that type of play
call down in that scenario. Andso statistically, again Clemson dominated, except
on the scoreboard they did. Imean, you look at the game overall,
twenty first downs to nine ten cState sipper seven of eighteen on third
(10:39):
down. NC State was three ofthirteen total yards three sixty four to two
oh two. But once again, the rushing game in the first half,
and we got to talk about willShip. We gotta have that conversation because
we don't know what his status istoday. It doesn't look great, but
we'll get some more info from wilvi Enniwoard here coming up in about five
minutes. He may not play inthis game, and certainly it was a
tough hit he took. But theycouldn't get the running game going early.
(11:01):
I know, the total yards weregreat, A lot of those were late
in the game when they're trying tomake a comeback. But again, they
passed the ball fifty one times. That's not a winning formula for Clemson.
It hasn't been for years. Youwant to keep that. Even when Lawrence
and Watson was here, the ideawas to balance the running game with etn
with what Lawrence could do, andthey were just getting away from that a
little bit. And I do wonderif some of this new adjustment to this
(11:22):
new system with Garrett Riley leads tosome of the issues not only with the
imbalance in the run of the passgame, but also in the red zone
where you get there so many timesand there's just a lack of consistency was
scoring. You feel like once youget in there. I heard Levon Kirkland
talking this week on his podcast aboutthis. It was almost like they've got
the yips like the putting game.I can certainly relate to this in golf,
you get inside a certain zone,it's like you just don't have a
(11:43):
feel for it. And right nowthey have no feel for how to get
in that end zone when they needto. Yeah, and that's a devastating
thing as a Clemson Tiger fan becauseover the past decade you've seen Clemson be
able to take advantage and score inthe red zone. And that's something that
we have seen. And just evenfrom the run game perspective, when you're
having Kate Klubnik could attempt fifty onepasses to your point, Yes, Now,
(12:09):
all of a sudden you're throwing offthat balance. And we talk about
balance all the time that you've gotto have offensive balance, but that doesn't
mean necessarily you're going to pass fiftypercent of the time and run fifty percent
of the time. It's the balanceyou have to have the ability if a
team is trying to take away oneof your strengths, do you have the
(12:30):
ability to counter that with the otherside. So if they're trying to take
away your run game, can youpass and vice versa. And Clemson just
hasn't been able to find that balanceout right now, and so there's some
structural issues. It seems on theoffensive side to have an offensive rhythm,
which that seems to be part ofthe scenario that we're seeing each week,
(12:54):
is just inconsistent on the offensive side. Yeah, yeah, close to halftime
they had fourteen carries for three fiveyards two and a half yards per pop.
That's not acceptable and I'm sure coachSwinney Coach Riley understand that. You
move forward into the week here andagain, this is the larger conversation to
have in the PostScript of all thiswas in the call in show where Davos
Sweeney had a conversation with a gentlemannamed Tyler from Spartanburg and again Richmond.
(13:18):
I said this on my show allweek on Fox Sports Upstate Game on.
I know you host the Richmond Weaversshow at three pm as well on that
same station. I don't want tomake this about you villainizing a call or
villainizing a fan, so I wascareful not to overplay that. But it's
tough when it becomes all about what'sgoing on on the call in shows and
what's going on off the field, and like the things you focus on during
(13:41):
the week that don't really relate tofootball becomes about well, you're getting paid
this much, you're not winning enough. That's when you know this program really
needs to take a good, hardlook about where they are. I don't
blame coach Sweeney for standing up forhis program. I think he's speaking to
a certain audience here. It's tothe hardcore fans of this program that are
going to be there in supporting thisteam full throat. But it's not unfair
to criticize what's been a tough stretchright now for this team. And when
(14:05):
you're making the big bucks, that'spart of the job. Well, yeah,
and Davosweeney he understands that he putshis big boy pants on each morning
and knows based on what he isbeing paid. And you know, I
do also look at it from herperspective, and I'm balanced this because I
do believe, yes, based onhow the program is right now, yes,
(14:28):
you are going to have certain criticismthat comes your way and can you
have the opportunity self reflection and reallyexamine Okay, am I doing the best
for this program? And I thinkDadosweeney is in that process right now,
and knowing that there is that contingencyof the fan base that feels very similar
to Tyler. And I know we'renot going to spend a lot of time
(14:50):
talking about Tyler. There's Tyler fatiguegoing on based on I'm with everything that
has happened this week, but it'sjust the reality of where fan base is
are right now, and it's notjust based on Clemson, and Clemson is
the only program that has this goingon. Alabama has this going on.
(15:11):
And this is what's crazy. Duringthat Tennessee game, I had a buddy
text me and he's the guy whowill check out message boards of other programs
just to get a polse for itand theable yes, and I question,
why are you doing that? Youknow we don't need to be doing that.
But there is a message board fromon Tide illustrated, and this is
(15:33):
when Alabama is losing at halftime toTennessee and the message says, Saban is
done. Folks, it is justa fact. Chumbley from Tennessee owns him,
lock stock and barrel. Worst halfof football in seventeen years. So
it was over, Saban's done. And then what is Alabama do in the
(15:54):
second half? They come back andshut Tennessee out. We had thirty seven
to twenty, and so you haveto take it with a little bit of
grain of salt. And I knowthe fan bases they're invested into this because
they're investing the one thing you cannever get back, and that's your time.
And I understand that, and soit's very important to the fan bases,
and Dabo Sweeney understands that. Buthe does have a right to also
(16:18):
be able to showcase what he hasdone and stand up for his players.
And I know some people seem totake it that, No, he was
just promoting what he's done. Andit's all about Dabo I think wholeheartedly.
It was more about what the programhas done and what the players have done.
And we saw some of the playerscome out like Barrett Carter Agent zero
(16:38):
talking about that. I loved whatDabo said, you know, and Dabo
doesn't go out there and try tomake the plays. We've got to do
better as players also, So it'sa totality type of responsibility that we're seeing
from the program. I go backto the conversations we've had before with Ben
Bulwear and Darren Rincher when we usedto do game on to Get they're on
(17:00):
Fox Sports Upstate, and one questionI brought up there in that interview was,
guys, I have you ever hada player come to you with any
sort of like gripes about coach swinanything in the past. And they said,
to a man, no, no, it's never been a situation where
you've had a player look back andsay he didn't make me better, He
didn't try to make me better. This program didn't try to make me better.
I think the expectations and DEVII usedthat word a lot this week.
We're very high for this team thisyear with Garrett Riley coming in, Brandon
(17:22):
Struter gets fired and you start losinggames in the way they do that are
uncharacteristic of this program, You're gonnafeel some heat. But I think on
the other side of it, coachTwin he's not up there making up stories
or telling this. He's stating facts. They have twice beat Alabama in the
National Championship over the past seven years, and they've been one of the few
(17:44):
teams over the past decade or so, in fact, probably the only to
have that consistency of ten plus winsevery single year. And yeah, that's
going to come to an end thisseason, but there's always next year.
It's a young team, by theway. That's something we don't talk about
enough. It is a young team, and I know that's where some fans
will then look at it, Well, Dabosweeny's not embracing the transfer portal,
not embracing some of the changes thatare going on in college football, and
(18:06):
maybe we will see Dabo do that. And I think this is an opportunity
for self reflection, not to sayingthat you have to be deon Sanders and
revamp your entire roster. And wetalk about front. Yeah, we know
that that's not necessarily the case. But this is just an opportunity where I
think Dabos Sweeney has also said it, Now, this is the first season
(18:27):
a full of really football adversity sincetwenty ten, Yeah, when Clemson was
six and seven times. So it'sbeen a long time. But to your
point, two national championships against theevil Empire Alabama. They've been to four
national championships. That's remarkable when youlook at it from that perspective, and
(18:49):
I think that's where Dabos Sweeney isjust trying to make sure, Hey,
guys, just look at the totality. Don't look at everything in a vacuum.
Just this one season and the healthof the organization and the health of
this team based on this one season, because we are still a really healthy
team. Yeah, you take thoseACC championships for granted two and that's looking
(19:11):
mighty attractive right now if you're Clemsonsitting at four and four wishing you could
be back in that game. Butwe'll get to that around the ACC coming
up later this hour. Is it'sgetting interesting in the ACC right now with
the standings. You've got some teamslike Virginia Tech that are battling for an
opportunity to take on presumably Florida State, who can clinch the spot in that
game today with a win. Wegot Will Vanderwork coming up with an inside
look from the Clemson Insider coming upnext here in the next few minutes.
(19:34):
Stay tuned. This is the InglesTailgate Show. We are freezing, but
we are doing good out here.Tailgate with you live from Little John Colliseam
outside the shadows of Death Valley.Much more right here on ninety two point
five WSC. This is the InglesTailgate Show on ninety two point five w
e SC. Now here are yourhosts, John Ellis and Richmond Weaver.
(20:07):
Indeed, we are back in town, back in Tigertown. We can see
in the distance a little bit offog. It is thirty one degrees.
They say clear skies down here.I don't think so. This is rolling
fog. I see a little fireburning there in the distance. Richmond,
maybe that's the gut of this ClemsonTigers team. It's it's another bring your
own gut Saturday here if you will, celebrating what was eight years ago,
(20:29):
an opportunity for Notre Dame to comehere to town for the first time,
and Clemson is looking to have agut check of a game today and to
sort of see where they stand againsta Verica Notre Dame team. Welcome back
to the Ingles Tailgate Show. Johnellis Richmond Weaver, and it is chilly
out here, my friend. Yeah, bring that fire a little closer over
here in some type of heater orsomething. But I would have to say,
I see you and I'm layered up, and you don't. You're not,
(20:53):
you know, no gloves. Icome unprepared as always. I prep
the show, but I don't prepmyself in terms of the the elements.
You know me. I sweat likean animal. Anyway, this is good
weather for me. I love this. Oh this is how you used to
have the studio. Yea's right.I'd walk in there'd be meat hanging in
there. It's a meat locker Saturdayhere on the Ingles Tailgate Show. Joining
(21:14):
us as always with an inside lookas our friend Will Vanderward from the Clemson
Insider. He's also the co hostof the Believe in Clemson Football podcast,
and he joins us live here onthe Ingles Hotline. Will welcome into the
show, my friend. Hey,guys, what we just learned is that
Richmond is a indoor kind of guy. He's a this is why he played
basketball, Thank you right here,Yes exactly. I used to half we
(21:38):
could have a sponsorship with Snuggie. With Richmond in the studio, I used
to freeze into death of that studio. You remember, you'd be in there
with us from time to time.Oh yeah, welcome in, my friend.
It's good to hear your voice.Congratulations on your Steelers winning on Thursday
night. They're being outscored in everygame. But you know, opposite of
what this Clemson team has been doing. They're finding ways to win despite of
themselves. Onston right now, look, let's take a look back at what
(22:02):
happened last week. We'll talk aboutthe broader view of where this program is.
A tough loss to n C State, and of course it was a
bitter pill to swallow for a teamthat obviously had had their way with n
C stowed over the years. Willthe story of this season continues to be
in large part turnovers and in themost untimely of fashions. Here you are
who you are at this point, and I mean, let's be frank.
(22:26):
I mean they lost a bad footballteam last week. They really did.
It's a game they really have noexcuse for losing. I think coach Sweeney
and his staff feel the same waythat they thought that was a game they
should have won. Going in,we're going to win and should have won,
and they didn't. And you know, you dominate the lines of scrimmage
like they did, and you stilllost the game. And this common theme
(22:48):
there was two turnovers. As yousaid, constant turnovers led to fourteen points
for NC State and that's the differencein the game right there, right,
I mean, and what should havebeen maybe a seventeen to ten win was
a twenty four to seventeen loss. And so you know, you are who
you are at this point. Youknow, this is an average team at
(23:11):
best, a team that had avery very good defense and an offense that
is not very good. And that'swhy they're four and four right now.
And you just got to see ifyou could figure to turn something around.
And maybe today is a you knowa lot of people forget this was the
game last year where it all startedto fall apart. Clinton is seven and
(23:33):
seven since that lost a Notre Damelast year. They went into that game
number five in the country, eightto no everybody's talking about college football playoff
again. After that, they wentthree and three the rest of that season.
They're four and four now and theydon't even look like they're gett close
to the same team they were.So maybe today, you know, if
you're the extreme optimist, you cansay, maybe today they flipped the script
(23:56):
and it's Notre Dame who has thebetter team that everybody says should win,
and Clinton has no chance of winningtoday, Maybe Clemton goes in and beats
Notre Dame. Last year was fiveand three. Going into this game,
people forgot they were talking about wasMarcus Freeman going to be able to even
be there at the end of theyear that he's on going to get one
year to be Notre Dame's head coachbecause they were struggling so bad, and
(24:18):
you know, they flipped the script. They end up finishing the season on
a high note, and maybe Clemsondoes the same here to Notre Dame today,
knocks them out of that, youknow, that New Year six Bowl
game kind of deal that they're sittingin right now, and then Clemton goes
on to finish the season strong. So we'll see, they got an opportunity,
but they got to win today,to get that going kick off just
afternoon. You can hear it righthere on ninety two point five WEC and
(24:41):
the Clemson Athletic Network. We're joinedby Will Vandervoard, co host of the
Believe in Clemson Football podcast. It'srequired listening if you're a Clemson fan.
I listened this week and you andLevon Kirkland had a pretty good discussion about
the offense. And you know it'sbeen bad, but man, when you
look at the explosive plays they've beenthere, we just don't result in touchdowns.
And then I love the analogy youguys made about when you get in
(25:03):
the red zone it feels like almostwhen you're golfing, and I could relate
to this. I don't know aboutRichmond, but I know I've got the
yips from time to time. Itfeels like I do too. They've got
the yips in the red zone.Talk about how unique this is and all
the years you've watched Clemson football, has this perhaps been the most unique set
of circumstances in which they have continuedto lose games. It's crazy when you
(25:25):
look at where they are nationally inred zone possessions and they're really high.
They're top five, and where theyrank as far as red zone touchdowns or
red zone scoring, they're bottom ten, yep. And it's just amazing that
they get into the red zone andthey just don't execute them. For example,
you know, you know there's twofoldhere. First of all, I
(25:47):
questioned the play call on burst ingoal. Thought, excuse me, third
and goal at the one and ahalf yard line and you throw a pass
there. However, I will givecredit that the play should have worked and
the but cade was late delivering thefootball Tyler Brown or that's a touchdown,
(26:07):
It would should have been a touchdown. And because he broke open and the
play was there, but you know, club think was just a little bit
late getting the ball out and itis what it is at that point.
Now you got to kick it becauseyour fourth and goal with the wanted that
happened. That's a little bit harderthan fourth and goal at the six inch
line. So you know, it'sjust things of that nature that happened in
the red zone form. You know, like Miami game. We all know
(26:29):
it. Clubmate's gone, I mean, Will Shipley's going into the end zone
for the touchdown and fumbles, youknow, so they just seemed to have
it now. They were a littlebit better this week. They worked technically
three for three in the red zoneopportunities and scores last week. But that
one of that play, I justventuallywas huge because it was twenty four to
fourteen at the time and they couldhave, you know, made it twenty
(26:51):
four to twenty one, which wouldput a whole totally changed the dynamics of
that game at the end if Clemsonwas just having to go kick a field
goal instead of trying to score atouchdown to tie it up. So,
you know, it's just those littlethings that happen where you're just like,
what is up with this team? You know, you saw when MafA got
shaped read down from behind and gottackled around the seven or eight. You're
(27:11):
like, yeah, they're not scoringa touchdown. You just knew it.
Everybody in the press boxes like, yeah, they exactly, you know,
and I think probably every Clemson fanout there felt the same way. So,
you know, it is what itis. I think, you know,
Will Putnam said it best a fewweeks ago that they just think too
much when they get in there. He says, because when we practice during
the week. It's not we're doingthe right things in practice. We're executing
(27:33):
the practice, it's just not translatingto the game field. And that's something
that Tiger fans are still scratching theirheads in regards to not having that opportunity
of seeing the offense be able toproduce points when they get into the red
zone. And we've talked about asWill Vandervoort is our guest from The Clemson
Insider and also co host of theBelieve in Crimson Football podcast with Levon Kirkland.
(27:57):
So make sure you check that whereveryou get your podcast, and so
Will. The one thing that Idid like to see though, is that
we did get to see Phil MafAhave an opportunity of getting some more carries
and seeing that he can be aproductive back, and especially when you got
down there inside the five yard line, and we know how good he is
(28:18):
from a yard after contact perspective, and he's a bulldozer type of running back.
But yes, we don't have Travisetn out there. We know that
that explosive speed that he could breakaway, but it also now looking at
Will Shipley with that injury that heoccurred there with the concussion and now in
concussion protocol, And obviously you don'twant to have any scenario, regardless of
(28:42):
how good Phil MafA played, whereyou have a guy down, what's the
update with will Shipley right now andbeing in the concussion protocol and we know
his day to day, But haveyou heard any news? Yeah, I
mean just I'm sure it's the samestuff you guys heard. He's just it
doesn't sound like he's I can't saydefinite because we don't know. We'll find
(29:03):
out at ten thirty when something's outit's official availability list. But if I
was a bet man, I wouldsay he's probably not going to play,
you know, And I'm just basingoff history when this has happened that clemtson
other players attack concussions. They generallythey did, they take the right precautions,
(29:25):
and that player sits out the nextweek unless he's just totally having no
symptoms or all. But when youyou and you have anybody's had a concussion
nose, it takes several days forthose symptoms to go away, and so
you know, you want to beon the safe side. The brain is
obviously went through traumatic trauma, andyou don't want to go push a guy
back out there where he can getseverely injured or even worse, and it
(29:47):
may not recognize it now, butlater on life it could happen. And
so you you you want to takethose precautions and say, okay, let's
just make sure everything's good and yousend them for another game. And I
think if I was a betman, would I would be very very prize will
Shipley played today. I don't thinkhe's gonna play, and that's big for
Clemson if that is indeed the case. We'll keep an eye on the injury
(30:07):
reports as we go along. WillVandervoord wrapping up here with our good buddy
from the Clemson Insider and the Beliefin Clemson Football podcast. So just quickly
looking ahead to Notre Dame, talkabout some of the key matchups. Again,
this is a Notre Dame defense thatI believe his tenth in the nation
right now. Overall, they've gotsome just great players in their front seven,
but also Xavier Watson the back end. There. You've got some great
(30:29):
players on this team. And again, this is going to get no easier
for Clemson on that side of theball. What must Clemson do in your
view, to win this game today, if they have any chance at all,
well, they got to do what'sgoing to be very hard to do
because of all the injuries that havecome out on the offensive line. You
know, yeah, we known ofMarcus Kate is not going to play.
He suffered a severe injury and practice. We don't know the extent of that
(30:52):
injury. Officially. Clinton hasn't officiallysaid, but every all accounts, you
know, we found out and stuffthat he's not going to play. Colin
Sadler is he you know, he'squestionable for this game at left tackle.
And then you know, so youknow, just two pieces right there,
you could be missing on that offensiveline that I thought showed improvement in the
(31:15):
second half against NC Stateium started runningthe football. Well, I think they
got to run for one hundred andtwenty five yards against Notre Dame. And
that's running yards. I'm not countingsacks or anything. I'm talking like the
running backs and a positive rushing football, you know, not not what the
net would be because unfortunately, andI've never understood this is why college does
(31:36):
it. Sack kind of gets therun game. But so I want to
see if they can run for onehundred and twenty five yards. Then they
have a chance to win this gamebecause that's going to cause a Notre Dame's
defense to have to sit back,I mean, you know, and and
try to guess what Clemson's doing insteadof Clemson being third and long or second
and long, and then that NotreDame defense, which by the way,
(31:56):
guys, has the third best passin the country, the number three in
the country and interceptions as you mentionedthat their safety leads the country and interceptions.
Clempson does not want to be insecond and third and long situation,
so they have to run the footballif they have any chance of winning this
game. Big opportunity for Clemson todayat four and four two. Be a
(32:17):
bit of a spoiler. It's differentterritory right now for this Tigers team.
But let's see if they can.As the ultimate optimist that Daboswinty is get
this team moving in the right direction, I have no doubt they'll do their
best and doing his best as alwayswill Vandivard from the Clemson Insider, joining
us with an inside look. Enjoythe game, my friend, Enjoy your
NFL Sunday as well. Thanks forjoining us, Hi guys, thanks so

that. Thanks listen. Insider joiningus as always, We're back after this

Tigers will tip off after that aroundnine thirty and again proudly sponsored by our
good friends at Ingles Markets, don'tforget coming up next week on Monday.
In fact, the Ingles Countdown totip Off Show is back for the fourth

hosting that coming up Monday on ninetytwo point five WSC and all throughout the
week there'll be a litany of gamescoming up for Clemson and we'll give you
more information on that as we goalong throughout the show here. So thanks
to Angles for all they do forhelping us out on that front as far
as the ACC goes now in football, and I think I'm knowing now why
you love basketball so much. Numberone, you love the game. Number
two, it's indoors. I've beenpreaching that for years. That's why I
(35:22):
as always told my kids, Hey, is there way you can play basketball?
Right? Because I love watching youplay sports side outside Maybe No,
of course, I loved watching mykids playing sports. Absolutely, I love
it too. I tell you what, in the ACC, I'm loving what's
going on right now. Not somuch for Clemson, but there's a lot
of dynamics in play. You lookat what happened last week. Of course,
(35:44):
Virginia Tech got the big win overSyracuse thirty eight to ten. They
are now three and one in theACC. From that win, we'll talk
more about what's going on here. From last week Florida State forty one sixteen
over Wake Forest, they moved toeight and oh the team that'll be facing
off with Clemson today fifty eight toseven win over pitt Georgia Tech. How
(36:05):
about it. We talked about ityesterday, We talked about it last week
as well. This Georgia Tech teamwas going to be able to come in
and do some damage, I thoughtagainst this North Carolina defense. And now
you've seeing that Carolina defense show alittle bit of its true colors from last
year, giving up what two hundredplus yards rushing in the fourth quarter in
this game, a crazy loss fortysix to forty two at the hands of
a very good Georgia Tech team.Well, Georgia Tech is one of those
(36:28):
inconsistent teams. We've talked about it. They lose a bowling green, but
then they will continue to play verywell against top ranked teams in the top
twenty five, especially in the ACC. And they take down another one with
North Carolina. So the interesting tosee how North Carolina is able to respond.
Now, we won't see much fromthem today playing Campbell, but we
(36:50):
do know that North Carolina will bemaking a trip to the Valley in a
couple of weeks. Yes, theywill be looking up for that. Last
week, Louisville had taken down Dukethree. Of course, do got a
big win the other night. We'lltalk about that in a minute. Boston
College was a winner last week againstYukon twenty one to fourteen. Of course,
we talked about NC State twenty fourseventeen over Clemson and Miami and what
(37:12):
was a great game against Virginia.Tony Muskett had a great game for Virginia,
but Miami gets a narrow win againstthis Virginia team in overtime last week.
But again a hat tip to TonyElliott. He's got that program playing
at a high level right now. They've had some nice wins this year.
They're just just a little bit waysthere from taking the next step. I
think, yeah, and I thinkthis is something that we've talked about and
(37:34):
we've seen from Virginia and how they'vebeen able to respond this season. They
might not have talent on that rosterwhen you look at it from just you
know on paper, how they matchup against some of these other teams,
but they compete. They compete everysingle game, and it's great to see
what Tony Elliott's doing and obviously canhe improve that and I think he definitely
(37:57):
will. In Miami, they justseem to be that team right now.
I know, obviously they lost toGeorgia Tech and that baffling scenario where they
didn't take a knee, but that'sthe only real blemish on their schedule in
terms of close games and how they'reable to win some of these close games
and obviously winning in double overtime againstthe Tigers. So Miami is that dangerous
(38:20):
team also that you do have tolook at. Do they have a shot
of making it to Charlotte and thisbunch of teams there is a bunch of
teams I should say that are rightthere sitting at that number two spot behind
Florida State, because Florida State seemsto be the odds on favorite obviously being
finished in the number one spot toget to Charlotte for the ACC Championship.
(38:46):
We'll see what happens with Louisville andVirginia Tech. Because who have ever thought
Virginia Tech would be sitting there andthen also even Boston College getting the victory
last night against Syracuse and now they'rebowl eligible. This is a team who
started off earlier in the season losingto Northern Illinois. Yes, and now
they actually have an opportunity for abowl game. So kudos to Jeff Hafley
(39:09):
and what they've been able to do. And for Syracuse, I you hate
seeing it. And as we've talkedabout it, Dino Babers is such a
good guy, and you know heobviously has had some success there at Syracuse,
but you wonder losing another game likethis, you know, will there
(39:30):
would be something changing there in Syracuse, he almost thinks. So their own
five in conference play this season,Duke with a big win, how about
Grayson loftus from Gaffney coming into thefourth quarter and having a big game in
place of of course Riley Leonard Dukeis bowl eligible. They're six and three
now three and two in the conferenceweek Forest falls to one and five within
the ACC key games today Campbell, you mentioned coach by my good friend Mike
(39:52):
Minner, who used to be withthe Panthers taking on North Carolina. It's
a big favorite for North Carolina today. Excted to win that game. Virginia
Georgia Tech should be interesting. It'son the CW network at two pm.
You never know. With Virginia theyplayed teams tough this year. Look at
Hayes King his statline this year, twenty one touchdowns, ten interceptions. I
mean, that's a lot of passinggoing on right now. He's either jeckled
(40:12):
or hide in terms of the quarterbackplay for Georgia Tech, Florida State taken
on Pitt of course, Virginia Techyou mentioned against Louisville that's for a lot
of the marbles right now to getto second place in the ACC. And
then Miami and NC State tangling laterat eight pm on the ACC network.
The standings right now, Rich talkedabout it. Florida State right now.
Six to know in the conference andyou got Louisville Virginia Tech four one,
(40:34):
three and one respectively. And thereis lurking North Carolina with no conference play
today, so they can't make upany ground. Boston College, what a
story that is, as you mentioned, three and two in the conference right
now, winners of five straight, one of the hottest teams in the conference
right now. It's going to beinteresting as we look at the full dynamics
of the ACC with Clemson right nowin tenth place in that conference, but
(40:55):
playing for I don't want to justsay pride. There's a purpose with what
Clemson's doing right now in terms ofthere's some things in front of them they
can still accomplish in terms of bowleligibility. You don't want to be on
the outside looking in right now.So I think that's the focus right now
for Clemson. One game at atime. Man, this is a tough
Notre Dame team. It is avery tough Notre Dame team, and I
know we'll break down more some ofthe key matchups, but this is when
(41:20):
you look at it. Just fromthe beginning of the season, when we
looked at the schedule, we werecircling this game because thinking that this was
going to have college football playoff implicationsright and now, obviously the Tigers are
out of it, but even theIrish with two losses, they seem to
be out of it unless something crazyhappens in college football, because we've never
seen a two loss team make itinto the college football Playoff. The way
(41:45):
it is structured now. But movingforward next season with a twelve team playoff,
you have two losses, you stillhave a shot, a legitimate shot
of making the college football playoff. And so that's what I'm excited about because
we'll still be able to see somefanatic matchups in a true playoff bracket type
of scenario. But looking at thisgame, it is completely different landscape than
(42:08):
what we thought it was going tobe at the beginning of the season.
Yeah, it's hard to believe thatthey're in this spot right now. Clemson
is, but such as the natureof college football, things do evolve and
change, and Clemson's gonna have tofind a way to dig deep, and
as they brought their own guts afew years back against Notre Dame back in
twenty fifteen, they're gonna have todig deep and have a bit of a
gut check, as we talked aboutearlier against a very good Notre Dame defensive
(42:30):
team, in particular Sam Hartman atquarterback. Will break down the full scope
of that matchup coming up here laterin the show, and of course,
in about ten minutes or so,one of my favorite parts of the show
on this day with Richmond Weaver. We're going to look at some of the
key moments that has happened with thisprogram on this very day, November fourth,
twenty twenty three. I want toremind everybody we are sponsored by Ingles

it's cold, but you can smellthat smoke in the air in a
good way. You've got people outhere with bon fires going, you've got
the grills firing up. Come onout and join us here. We are
(44:04):

fans out there. Got some kiddosout here, of course, all bundled
up. Reginald has been layered up. Yours truly is a little more open
to the cold weather. But we'regonna see what happens as we go throughout
the day. Here. We talkedabout some of the key games in the
(44:25):
ACC today. We've got some keygames in the top twenty five to talk
about. Later in the next hour, we'll start looking at the college football
playoff rankings and all that it entailsis, you know, the top twenty
five typically is what you look atand say, ah, you know what,
it's the ap top twenty five.It doesn't tell you much. It
doesn't mean much when you get intothe college football playoff ranking season. There's
(44:46):
some definite items to look at,and of course, the big story in
college football, and aside from what'sgoing on down here in Clemson of course
in our neck of the woods hasbeen the sign stealing controver at Michigan,
with Connor stallions of course becoming abit of an internet meme making the rounds
(45:07):
with other items out there in termsof not being able to stay out of
trouble. And there's this interesting, fascinating angle to the story that's been coming
through over the past twenty four hoursthat we'll cover later in the next hour
in terms of hey, is OhioState somehow connected all this. We'll dive
into that in much much more aswe are live here from Little John Coliseum
(45:30):
on a beautiful day here in theUpstate. It's going to be cold,
and some of the matchups to lookfor again, this Notre Dame team that
comes in very hot defensively right now. They are tenth in the nation in
total defense. They have this player, Xavier Watson their secondary, a tremendous
safety who has been a great producerback there in terms of interceptions. I
think one of the positive things youlook back at Richmond last week in this
(45:52):
game against inc State, you're notgetting the production from the wide receivers you
want this season consistently. I knowTyler Brown has had some big moments.
Stilato's had his moments as well.Bo Collins has had some nice flashes.
But the tight end play from JakeBrinninstall has been exceptional the last two weeks.
And you even saw his understoody, his backup stay Ennis make a big
catch in this game. The Titanscombined for about one hundred and twenty five
(46:15):
yards receiving against in C State. So that's one area I think where if
you're suffering from a little bit ofpassing I guess deficiencies. There's been real
growth with the tight end position rightnow. Yeah, there definitely has.
And you know, you talked aboutthe Notre Dame defense tenth in the nation
and total defense ninth in the nation, and scoring defense but also ninth in
(46:37):
the nation and scoring offense. Sothis is a balanced team. We talked
about that even from an offensive side, but they're Notre Dames able to do
it from the defensive side. Nowthey are out with they are without their
tight end Mitchell Evans is out forthe season. But you do have to
look at it from a perspective. You've got a veteran quarterback, Sam Hartman,
(47:00):
and this is a guy who didn'thave a great game against Pittsburgh,
even though Notre Dame was able towin fifty eight to seven in that game,
but it was the running game withAudrich Estimey there for Notre Dame over
one hundred yards. And this guyis the real deal also averaging basically one
hundred yards per game. But he'salso fourth in the nation and rushing tds
(47:22):
this season. So it's a guythat Clemson fans they will remember because he
had a dominant performance against the Tigerslast year in Notre Dame. It's rare
for Clemson to lose two straight inthe conference. It's been over a decade
since it happened within a single season, that is, and that's one of
(47:43):
the trends you're looking to break hereif you're Clemson, is to get out
of that rut. And a bigpart of that will be getting Sam Hartman
off his spot. He's been officiedthis season. When he's comfortable, as
we've seen Hartman over the years withwake Forest, we saw him last year
in that epic shootout. He getscomfortable, he gets in a rhythm,
he can make it a long dayfor you, and that's gonna be one
of the keys. But without theirkey tight end, as you mentioned,
(48:04):
who suffered the terrible injury last week. That's gonna make a big difference,
I think, and what they cando. We'll talk more about the matchup
here against Notre Dame later in theupcoming hour. We'll also look at some
of the key moments in this serieshistory. There's been limited sample size to
look from, relatively speaking, butthere have been big moments in this series
with some legendary names, Heisman winningnames, NFL legendary names. We'll talk
(48:28):
about some of the key moments betweenNotre Dame and Clemson, look back at
some of the history of this series, and we'll start looking at the college
football playoff rankings as well. Alot of controversy around the Michigan program.

We've talked about a lot today interms of what's going on with the
Clemson Tigers. We're going to takea closer look throughout the show at what's
going on in a wild top twentyfive and a college football playoff rankings that
(50:44):
I think didn't surprise a lot ofpeople, but certainly a lot of questions
loom for one of those four teamsin the top four, Michigan and all
that it entails right now in termsof the controversy with the potential signal stealing
and and all that's just in thenews right now. On that we'll talk
about that. A big change inColorado right now is they're shifting away from
(51:04):
their offensive coordinator. We'll give youthe lowdown on that leader in the show
as well. As always, itis time to fire up the Dolorean and
go back in time and let's seewhat's happened on this day in Clemson football.
Sire up the DeLorean. Time totake a trip down memory lane going
we don't need road. It's ohTD on this day and Clemson football history.
(51:30):
Here's Richmond Weaver, so o TD. Yes for the Clemson Tigers on
this date. Now, when welook at this overall, this is a
scenario where not a whole lot ofgames have been played on November the fourth,
just in terms of the totality ofthe Clemson Tigers. But there was
(51:51):
one game in two thousand and seventeen, the number twenty NC State wolf Pack
taken on the number six Clemson Tigers. And this was a hyped up game
where could NC State finally get overthe home could they take down the Tigers?
And fortunately for the Tigers, bigoffensive performance there thirty eight to thirty
(52:12):
one victory for the Clemson Tigers. So that was a memorable game in on
this date. But Clemson is tenand five on this date. But I
think it's more important that we actuallylook at the series' history with Notre Dame
and knowing that, yes, therehasn't been a whole lot of games within
series, but we do know thatthis has been some big games and obviously
(52:34):
the twenty fifteen game byog and that'sone of the things that we talk about
quite a bit. And just theepic performance that we saw from Deshaun Watson
and the Tigers offensively, and thenthe big defensive performance there stopping the two
point conversion. Ben Bull where doingthe summersault and a lot of people have
said, man, that was amazingBen, that you did that summersault.
(52:58):
Well, we've had the opportunity oftalking with Bim Bull where and I had
him as a guest on my podcastand also a part of the Clemson's Greatest
Games docu series that helped produce, and he set the record straight. He
actually tripped and he was falling andjust had to flip over to make sure
(53:19):
he had lands flat on his faceand so it was by accident, so
it was not a somersault that hemeant to do. No pictures on the
scorecard exactly, but just this serieshas been great when you look at it
with Notre Dame in Clemson, itcertainly has good looking on this day with
Richard Weaver always is a truncated versionbecause you're right, not a lot's happened
(53:39):
on November fourth year. But Iwill say two of Clemson's toughest losses Notre
Dame happened around this day. Wecould, I guess we could modify around
this day in Clemson history. Novemberfifth of last year. Of course,
Notre Dame thirty five fourteen. Itjust was an ugly game. We don't
want to revisit too much of that, but you gotta be honest with yourself
and realize that was one of thegames that sort of set the tone for
(54:01):
where Clemson is right now. Unfortunately, at four and four, it was
bad offensively, was bad defensively. In special teams man Notre Dame got the
best of them. And then youlook back to the pandemic you're in twenty
twenty where DJU came in at NotreDame and then when forty seven to forty
they come up short against Notre Damein two overtimes. That was on Novermber
seventh, twenty twenty. So again, not a lot happened on November fourth.
(54:22):
But because some games during this week, I guess in history that have
been pretty significant in Clemson Notre Damehistory. And that was a game when
you talk about that game with DJUngla comes in there and plays for Trevor
Lawrence and sets the record for mostpassing yards there in Notre Dame. And
so you're thinking from that perspective, and this is where Clemson fans were thinking,
(54:45):
Okay, the Tigers have hit onceagain on a quarterback and DJ was
going to be that guy that wouldbe able to continue the legacy set by
obviously a lot of other quarterbacks butmore importantly with Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence.
And DJ was going to be thatguy. And uh, now we
know that DJ has off to OregonState and we wish him the best as
(55:07):
they continue to try to fight forthe Pac twelve title. Yeah, DJU
and Oregon State. I mean, look, they tough loss last week,
but they've been very good and alot of people have made the comment the
DJU good for him, and Iagree with that. Look, it was
a tough ending for him here atClemson, but good to see him doing
well elsewhere. And I think that'sthe attitude to have hey joining us now.
(55:27):
It's so good to have her back. It's Ruby Down's event coordinator manager
from Ingles Markets joins us here onthe Ingles tailgate. Shill welcome in Ruby,
how you know it. We canhear you us. You love hearing
your voice. You been Thank you. I am very much back and very
much healthy. Yeah, great tosee you. Thank you so much.
It was a long ride, sixmonths, six months. Yeah, we're
(55:50):
so glad you're you're in good health. You're back joining us here on this
cool day. We're going to tryto make it as pleasant for you as
we candidate. It's a little bitchilly out here. It's a little cool,
but you know that's football, footballweather. It's football weather. Let's
do it. So every time Igo to the Ingles Facebook page or to
the Twitter feed, I'm seeing youout there in particular, and of course
Melissa Level or whole team out thereat Eagles. A lot of stuff going
(56:13):
on in western North Carolina, alot of stuff going down here in the
upstate in terms of not just footballbut community outreach. What's the latest right
now that you guys at Ingles arelooking at a champion and spearheading right now,
right well, right now, wehave the Fox Carolina Coach Drive going
on. Yeah, so if yougo into your local Ingles, please just
go through your closets and see whatyou can find. I'm sure there's something
(56:37):
in there you haven't worn. Andif you haven't worn it last year,
you're not gonna wear it this year. That's right, So donated give it
to someone that will love it andcherish it and keep warm with it.
Yes, absolutely, keep warm withit. Of course, we got a
big event come up, brought toyou by Ingles, the Ashville Championship up
there. Yes, big basketball tournamentcoming up next week. I know you're
excited about that one, right upthe Harris You really am. It's of
(57:00):
one of the first events that Iget to do coming back, and I
love basketball. So let's hit it. Go Clemson, Yes, let's go.
And of course you know when youneed tail getting supplies your tailgating headquarters.
Currently, there are so many peopleout here tailgating today. And I
(57:20):
am pretty much sure because I wasat the Ingles this morning and I've seen
people in there gathering up their goodiesto bring it out here today. And
I've seen some of these guys,so I know they are shopping at our
local Ingles. She's Ruby Down. She's the star of the show, event
coordinator manager from Ingles. It's sogood to have you back. You.
I'm so excited to be back.Go Clemson, Go Tigers. It's so
(57:43):
good to have you back. Andit's good to see your boys. Good
to hear your voice. Cold onhere. You know, like I said,
it's football weather. We're not supposedto be warm. We're supposed to
be right. Warm up by chairing. That's it. Cheering, just warming
up and jumping up and down andcheering and let's let's get it going.
(58:04):
Ruby Downs. Always a treat tosee you. Thank you all right there.
She is Ruby Down's event manager coordinatorfrom Ingles Markets. Of course,
Ingles does such a great job inour community, does so much in terms
of community outreach, sponsoring somebody tofind things that are going on in our
community. And uh again, it'sjust yeah, it's so good to see
Ruby back. She's been through alot of adversity. She makes no secret
(58:28):
about it. In high five toyou for all you do. Thank you
so much. I'm glad you're here. Okay, Ruby Downs, there she
is from Ingles Markets and again justgetting back into what we were talking about
here with Notre Dame. Again, one of the great memories that that I'm
sure a lot of Clemson fans havelooking back at this series is of course
the Byog game, but a specialgame when you look back at the series
(58:50):
history was of course the fact thatJoe Montana was a part of this rivalry
as well, way back when justa guy named Joe Montana. Yes,
and obviously all fame quarterback in theNFL and one of the great quarterbacks that
we've seen, especially in Notre Damehistory. And I still need to get
with Tim Berey to corroborate this story. I've heard the rumor that this was
(59:14):
a tough game for the Tigers asJoe Montana takes the Irish on a late
scoring drive to get that victory. And apparently the rumor is is that Joe
Montana after the game ended, dida victory lap around the state, around
the field, I should say, inside the stadium and holding up his finger
(59:37):
number one and not too happy Clemsonfans saw him doing that. But I
don't know if that is actually trueor not, but that's a it could
be urban legend, whatever it mightbe. But if that is true,
that is one of those moments thatif you saw that, you'll you'll remember
(59:58):
that. Well, you mentioned Tim. I'm looking at my game notes this
week from the Clemson Athletic Department andhe's mentioned in the Clemson Notre Dame Connections
department. Rich you know this aswell as anybody, but Racemen forty years
with Clemson Athletics and sports Information priorto the retirement back in twenty eighteen.
Although I would call that a softretirement because the man still retirement. Yes,
then I have the wrong definition ofretirement today, that's what we're calling.
(01:00:22):
He did earn his undergrad degree fromNotre Dame and back in seventy seven,
at a master's degree back in seventyeight, worked as an undergrad and
grad assistant under Hall of Fame sidRoger Valiseri and Notre Dame Sports Information office
back in the seventies. So everytime they travel to Notre Dame, I
wwayls see our good friend Don Munsonand Tim taking a selfie there on the
(01:00:42):
campus. The place means a lotto Tim, and he means a lot
to us. He's certainly not onlyfrom an information standpoint, but the perspective
he brings in terms of Clemson football, I know this game means a lot
to him. Mister Google is whata lot of people call him, and
Clemson Google however you want to,Yes, and Tim is just an absolutely
(01:01:04):
fantastic guy, no wealth of knowledgeand just does have a Obviously a big
part of his life is through NotreDame, but he's carried that over here
with Clemson. So it's an interesting, you know scenario for him is so
much love that he has for NotreDame, but also so much love that
he has for Clemson. And thenall of the people that have come up
(01:01:25):
under Tim Beray that are now communicationpeople, sids, whatever the titles are,
they Revere tim Beray, and he'smeant so much to the university and
so much to a lot of otherpeople who have now continued their career in
sports communications, no doubt about it. One of the other Notre Dame Clemson
(01:01:45):
connections that I can't overlook. Ofcourse, he was one of my favorite
players growing up in the eighties wasto white Clark, the late great the
White Clark, who had some greatmoments here in Clemson from seventy five to
seventy eight and Joe Montana, thegreat notreed Ame quarter. They went on
to play together, of course atSan Francisco, and there's some interesting backstories
(01:02:06):
to how that all came about. But that's part of the connection here between
Notre Dame and Clemson as well.Yeah, so you're going to bring that
up as a Dallas Cowboys fan andClark by Clark, Yes, later on,
I'm sorry, later on in lifedid I come to find out that
Dwight Clark went to Clemson. Ididn't know that at the time. I
was a kid watching that game andcrying afterwards as the Cowboys lose, and
(01:02:31):
knowing that Dwight Clark is a Tigerand he broke my heart that day.
Tiger breaking Richmond Weavers hard man. It's rare to hear. My Dwight Clark
connection. Was My dad, BillEllis, who's done radio for years here
in the Upstate, once upon atime, had his head caved in literally
by Dwight Clark. In high school. They played against each other, my
dad at South Beck and Charlotte andDwight Clark at Garringer High School. Dwight
(01:02:53):
got the best of them, inthat matchup, So he goes way back.
He's a local guy, and ofcourse the Lake great DW. White
Clark we honor his memory, ofcourse, is one of the greats here
Clemson all time. Coming up next, let's take a closer look at the
top twenty five the college football playoffrankings. What the heck is going on
with Michigan? What the heck isgoing on to Colorado? Is they replaced
a coordinator mid season? All thatand much more is the Ingles Tailgate Show
(01:03:15):
rolls on live from Little John Coliseumon ninety two point five WSC. This
is the Ingles Tailgate Show on ninetytwo point five w e SC. Now
Here are your hosts, John Ellisand Richmond Weaver. Well, we felt
(01:03:45):
like it would warm up, butit will eventually today, but it feels
like it's gotten about five degrees colderhere live outside a little town coliseum.
Rich five degrees colder at least,I'm saying fifteen degrees colder. It has
definitely gotten cold. You'd mentioned it. This fog, This is crazy.
This fog is rolling in. Arewe in San Francisco? I don't know.
(01:04:05):
I'm just talking about the forty nineErs and Dwight Clark. But yes,
my goodness, it does seem alittle bit colder. But guess what,
it's not stopping these Tiger fans. No, they're unloading, they're getting
ready for the festivities. And evenwhen I got here this morning early dark
thirty, as we got set up, I saw some runners running and I
(01:04:30):
love running, but not in thisweather. No, sir, I do
not like running in this weather. And this is the type of weather where
if you are out running whatever, even just out here, we've had to
make sure to go blow our nosea few times. So this is what
happens. And I can see peoplethough, they've got their tissues ready to
go here early this morning as theTiger's getting ready to take on the fighting
(01:04:55):
Irish. Yeah, it's the InglesTailgate Show. We're live outside Little John
Coliseum. Come on CEE US forthe next forty minutes or so as we
get you ready for Clemson Athletic Networkcoverage of the Ingles Tiger Tailgate Show coming
up next Rich and I will hopover next door and join our friends Dodge
Davidson and Mark Childress, Don Munthsit'll be on the show as well,
and a host of others. Sothat's coming up next year on the Clemson
Athletic Networks coverage of the Ingles TailgateShow. As we are iHeart Radio's home
(01:05:21):
for Clemson Athletics right here on ninetytwo point five WSC. So looking forward
to all that coming up here.We got a long day of radio ahead
of us, a good day ofradio, and a lot to look forward
to. Is the kids are filingin, the fans are filing in,
a lot to be excited about. And let's take a look right now,
if we will, at what's goingon around the country with the latest college
(01:05:41):
football playoff rankings and not a lotof surprises, Richmond, I think when
you look at it. But youand I have talked about this whole idea
of the top twenty five of theAP meaning very little. I mean,
you go through this early part ofthe season where we get amped up about
it because we need something to talkabout on the radio. But these are
the rankings that really truly matter rightnow, and they are out and it's
(01:06:04):
time to start diving into it withagain. You've got your four teams that
are in the mix right now,in that top four that really don't surprise
too many people. Ohio State numberone, Georgian number two without brock Bowers
right now, number three Michigan andall that it entails right now, and
then number four maybe a little bitunderrated right now in my mind, Florida
(01:06:26):
State's sitting there, Washington Oregon atfive and six. We'll go through the
rest of the list in a minute, but just your first impressions of what
we're seeing here from the top sixand that college football ranking. My first
impression is that we finally have thecollege football playoff rackets, so we don't
have to worry about the ap poleand the craziness that I think we see
happen. And obviously a Clemson notbeing in the top twenty five was a
(01:06:47):
rare site from that perspective. Butyes, I do agree with you.
I think Florida State is actually startingto play some of their best football right
now, and they definitely seem tobe a team that can contend. But
so don't forget about Oregon sitting therewith one loss. I do believe that
Oregon is a team. Obviously, that's a tough loss that they had against
Washington. But the one thing thatI also look at Ohio state number one,
(01:07:12):
and you've got Georgia number two.And I know you can't necessarily put
it in a scenario of just givinga team based on last year's results and
having them in the top spot, but Georgia sitting there at number two.
I'm just wondering how excited Kirby Smartis that they're number two instead of being
(01:07:40):
number one. Yes, because they'vegot some motivation. Oh now, all
of a sudden, nobody believes inGeorgia, right george is going to finish
in this season. That's how theyyou being ranked at number two right there?
So is this an opportunity for Georgiato have that bulletin board material that
Kirby Smart, you know, he'swanting something, He needed to manufacture some
(01:08:02):
type of motivation, even though yes, they have a big game against Missouri
today and obviously Missouri coming in twelfthin the country, and so you do
have that motivation. But I dobelieve it probably was a very good thing
for Georgia to be ranked number two, at least in Kirby Smart's mind.
I think what they're doing right nowGeorgia has been remarkable. Considering brock Bauer's
(01:08:26):
injury, continues to loom with thisprogram. They've maintained that aggressiveness on offense
and they've been great. You lookat Florida State with what they bring with
the triplets. Of course, you'vegot the great running back trade Benson Jordan
Travis playing tremendously high level football forthat team at the quarterback position, and
Keon Coleman who's getting it done withnine receiving touchdowns, but also in the
(01:08:47):
return game. They have a litanyof weapons. They play solid defense down
there. The question I have isWashington at five. I mean, that's
a team right now that's been alittle bit iffy the past few weeks.
Even the quarterback Michael Pennix Junior, who's one of the front runners for the
Heisman right now, he's had someup and down moments too, and they've
had some really close calls. AndI'm wondering, we talked about Oregon and
(01:09:10):
Washington getting that big victory, doesit not seem that Washington exerted so much
effort into that victory and was thattheir national championship type of game? Obviously,
I mean, just from a perspectiveof the national narrative, the national
exposure, all of that, becauseyou're right, they do not seem to
(01:09:32):
be the same type of offensive teamthat we saw in that game against Oregon,
but also even before that game, they just seem to be a different
team from that perspective. So it'sinteresting to see how Washington will finish out.
Yeah, no doubt about it.When you look at the rest of
the rankings here number seven, thisis where it gets interesting, Rich,
Yes, this is seven to liketwelve. So where's the transitive properties that
(01:09:56):
go into this? Because you gotTexas at number seven, at Alabama at
number eight, and Oklahoma at numbernine, And so we know Texas beat
Alabama, but Oklahoma beat Texas, and so why shouldn't Oklahoma be ahead of
Alabama. That's the last team tolose gets the hardest knocked in Oklahoma unfortunately
for them and Brent Vnables. Lastweek Kansas came rolling in and obviously a
(01:10:21):
bit of a stunner, but notso much when you look at the way
that Kansas has played all year,Oklahoma with the tremendous one in Texas,
as you mentioned, and there's Alabamasitting right there, just nick say,
but they just lurk. They justalways do this, even in what's a
quote unquote down here here they areat seven and one, with a clear
path to where they need to gobecause you know, at least Washington Oregon
(01:10:41):
very likely to trip up along theway, and I'm not certain one of
these four teams in the top fourwon't drop at least one game down the
stretchy Yeah, no question. Imean, we know there's going to be
some type of movement and that's justthe reality of it. And that's why
I'm looking from an SEC perspective thisweekend after tonight, there's either going to
be chaos in the SEC or it'sgoing to be the usual suspects and it's
(01:11:04):
going to be Georgia and Alabama thatare going to be meeting once again in
Atlanta for the SEC Championship, becausewe know LSU and Alabama play today,
So if there's the Tigers that getthat to upset, or is it the
Missouri Tigers that get the upset againstGeorgia, So we'll know a better understanding
of how the SEC is going toplay out later tonight. And it's also
(01:11:25):
interesting too. Again we will revealas much as we know about this story
right now on the Engles Tailgates Show. We've been following Pete Damils reporting from
ESPN and so many others on what'sgoing on in Michigan, and you can't
help but talk about it because it'sright there front and center. The Connor
Stallions has been dismissed from the Michiganprogram. And look, this is a
challenge for this entire team. Harballobviously is going to be under a lot
(01:11:47):
of scrutiny because of this, andyou know rightfully so it seems to be
something he might have brought upon himself. And I do wonder not only if
this will affect their play down thestretch. They've been dominant against some teams
they should have been, but canthey stain that focus in mentality with all
that looming over them right now,the outside pressures and the noise that is
(01:12:08):
going on. It will be interestingto see how they respond. Will it
galvanize the team or will it bea true distraction and wondering what's going on?
And this could be some unprecedented scenariosthat play out, because there's obviously
the reports out there that coaching staff, I mean coaches and also athletic administrators
(01:12:29):
have met with the Big Ten commissionerand are pushing for you need to take
some type of action if there isall this evidence that shows that there has
been true discrepancies in terms of signsealing and an unethical behavior, and we
haven't seen a conference be able tobe in a position, or I should
(01:12:53):
say, we haven't had a scenarioplay out where a conference commissioner has had
to take action during the season.Because we know the nc DOUBLEA. This
thing is going to drag out fora long time. Because even if the
NCUBLEA notified Michigan of these allegations andsaid an investigation is going to start,
(01:13:14):
Michigan, by NCUBA bylaws, theyhave ninety days to respond and so that's
well after the season's open. That'sit. So but now there is an
opportunity based on language within the BigTen. The commissioner does have the ability
to take action if needed. Butit's unprecedented because it has not happened previously,
(01:13:35):
especially on the football side. No, it hasn't. It's going to
be fascinating to watch, and there'slayers to this story that continue to sort
of peel back here. We don'thave enough data here to go into it
that much detail, but You're right. Even produced coach Sean Walters came out
this week is like, I know, we've got evidence that Michigan was there
basically cheating in our stadium and breakingthe rules. And then there's also the
(01:14:00):
stories that are out and I thinkpeople are pumping the brakes a little bit
to verify these stories. But itwas at least reported on on three that
Michigan is saying that they have evidenceas far as the private investigating firm that
seems to have uncovered this has tiesto Ryan Day, head coach at o
(01:14:24):
State. So perfect, yes, exactly. They play in a few weeks,
it's gonna be so much healthy hatredbetween those programs has always amped up
a notch. I love it.You look at the rest of the rankings
here, let's go through it.Old miss sitting there at number ten,
and look, the lane train stillhas a great opportunity when you look at
some of the games coming up thisweekend. At seven and one, they've
(01:14:45):
got a pretty clear path. PennState seven and one, they're eleventh Missouri.
You mentioned coach Drink, they gota big game coming up today against
Georgia at seven and one between thehedges and there's Louisville the other seven to
one team at thirteen. Who wouldhave thunk it we start the season that
Louisville would be a thirteenth ranked teamin the playoffs in the first week in
November. Nobody was thinking that JeffBrown was going to have the Cardinals sitting
(01:15:08):
there. And we talk about DaveDorin and saying that NC State is not
a basketball school. Well, weknow Louisville is a basketball school. Yes,
but this is something that nobody wouldhave predicted that Louisville was going to
be there with position not only foran ACC opportunity of winning an ACC championship,
(01:15:31):
But yes, I don't know, does Louisville, if they're able to
continue their run sitting there with oneloss, get to Charlotte and if they
could somehow and I'm going to goahead and say it's going to be Florida
State that's going to represent the ACCthere also in Charlotte. Could they win
(01:15:53):
the ACC championship sitting there with oneloss? How far does that catapult Louisville
into the College Football playoff rankings andcould they have an outside shot of getting
in or is it just based onrelative to other teams how they're performing,
and we do know that that doesfactor into it. But I just wonder
(01:16:15):
how Louisville would be viewed as aone loss team there, but say Florida
State is also a one loss ACCteam. Absolutely, but obviously if we're
saying if Louisville wins the ACC championship, then they would trump Florida State.
But I just don't know how thenational narrative would be regarding Louisville. Well,
it's a great job by Jeff Bromworking with Jack Plumber that quarterback this
(01:16:38):
year, and the defense has beensteady enough as well. We're going to
go through the rest of the rankingscoming up next, we'll talk about the
top twenty five matchups today some wordout of Colorado if we have time on
a change at coordinator that's got mescratching my head and much much more.
As The Ingles Tailgates Show rolls onlive here from the beautiful Little John Coliseum
right outside of Death Valley in theshadows of Death Valley on a chilly morning,
(01:17:00):
going out and tailgate with us untilnine am. It's the Ingles Tailgate
Show on ninety two point five we SC. This is the Ingles Tailgate
Show on ninety two point five wE s C. Continuing the Ingles Tailgate
(01:17:40):
Show right here on ninety two pointfive WeSC Richmond Weaver here with John Ellison,
Trey Falco back in the studio, producer extraorded Naire and mister funny Guy
as well. The heat is noton, mister Trey Falco. I'm not
too happy with your sense of humorthere. Heat is definitely off, as
(01:18:04):
it seems to have gotten colder hereoutside, Little John. But we are
excited to continue here this Saturday morningand knowing that we've got a big game
here in the valley, and knowingthat, yes, I know we've talked
about it four and four, it'snot where you want to be, but
this is an opportunity. Can yoube able to utilize this game as a
(01:18:28):
springboard to finish out this season strong? And I'm still amazed John though,
that we're here on November fourth,Like, where in the where in the
world did the season go? Whereto go? Where? Where's it going?
We talk about this every day.You can catch us also on Iheartradiosonne
Fox Sports Upstate one to four pointnine The Richmond Weavers Show at three pm
game on with John Illic at fourpm along with our buddy Trey Falco.
(01:18:50):
And I was talking about this yesterday. You know, it's only ninety nine
days now until the Super Bowl.Like the thing that the clock really goes
fast in the world of football. We were talking and all summer about oh,
come on football', let's getfootball going. We're already into week
ten in the college football landscape,in week nine in the NFL, and
it's here, baby. I mean, it is crunch time for a lot
of these teams, including Clemson, who, by the way, you still
(01:19:13):
have goals. We talked about thisearly in the show. The goal right
now is to just get back intothe winning form. I mean, the
short term goal is win this gametoday. But you got to get ball
eligible at some point. If you'reClemson, you don't want to be on
the outside looking in there, No, you do not. And this is
a great opportunity to build some momentum, build some confidence when there hasn't seemed
to be confidence right now at thispoint. And that's where you know,
(01:19:36):
I think from a perspective of thisis where we've heard Dadlisweeney do such a
really good job and being able tocommunicate the message to the players, and
the players really believe in it andunderstand it, and that is just focus
on one game at a time, and you focus on that one game at
a time, then it just builds. But I do believe that it seemed
(01:19:59):
to be the there was more talkabout, Hey, national championship, that's
what that's a target, that's yourgoal, and obviously we know that,
but it just hadn't seen that therewas discussions about national championships as far as
you know, out in the open. It was more about, hey,
we just look at it one gameat a time, but we focus on
(01:20:19):
that. You know, the bestis the standard, however you want to
define that. So it does seema little bit different. But I think
this is an opportunity to somewhat reset, reboot and focus on Notre Dame,
get this victory, and then tryto build upon the confidence that you can
have from a victory. Well,it's gonna be cold in a lot of
(01:20:40):
spots this morning, but it warmsup here and Clemson shortly should be high
around seventy. They're saying, they'resaying, you know, don't blame me,
you like you're blamed. The weatherman not me. I'm not charge
of the weather. Clearly, Iknow it's great. You can't see it
feels like South Bend weather. Speakingof the top twenty five, let's look
get a little whip around here, see what's going on today. I'll PM
(01:21:00):
on CBS Ohio State number one inthe country right now, eight and o
five to zero the Big Ten.Take it on Rutgers. Tom McCord has
been solid and the Marvin Harrison iscoming on right now. He's got his
eight touchdowns, eight hundred and eightynine yards receiving, best receiver in the
country. He's gotta be He's gonnabe a great one in the NFL.
He's in eighteen a half in apoint, eighteen and a half point favorite
Ohio State is. But don't countRutgers out. You know, this is
(01:21:21):
a game where we've seen coach ofcourse up there for Rutgers, Greg Ciano,
play some teams tough. They're threeand two in the Big Ten,
so look out for that. Thisis a good one. Big Noon on
Fox, number seven, Texas hostingKansas State, and I don't want to
say upset alert, but it's onlya three and a half point spread right
now. And I think Kansas Statecan do some damage in this game.
No, they definitely can. Theyseem to be a spoiler and we saw
(01:21:44):
Kansas being a spoiler last week againstOklahoma. So this is definitely a scenario
where you could see some movement inthe Big twelve. And we know there's
going to be some chaos somewhere, yes today, somewhere the next few weeks,
there will be some chaos. There'schaos every week, and we're hoping
for some this week. There couldbe chaos down there in Oxford, Texas
A and M taking on Old Miss. How about Jimbo Fisher going against Lane
(01:22:06):
Kiffin. That's always entertaining football, very entertaining. I still just cannot buy
into Jimbo Fisher and the Texas Aand m Aggie's And I know, yes,
he's I guess giving up the playcalling to Bobby Petrino offensive coordinator there.
But Texas A and M seems tobe the team very similar to Oklahoma
(01:22:27):
State. And you know how Ifeel Mike Gundy in Oklahoma State. Oh
yeah, And how you start believingin Mike Gundy in Oklahoma State and then
they'll drop a game. They'll letyou down and then when you give up
on them, then they'll go outthere and they'll have a big victory.
And that's Cowboys do Richmond on allfronts. Oh, here we go.
So now you're going to say somethingabout the Dallas Cowboys. Sympathy, my
(01:22:49):
friend, I get sympathy for you, old miss Texas. A and M.
Coming up at noon on ESPN,of course, comes to Notre Dame.
Also at ABC twelve pm kickoff. We'll get to that here in a
minute. Number seventeen, I'm numberseventeen Tennessee hosting Yukon. They're a thirty
five point favorite. You would thinkthat's a pretty easy win. Look out
for Arizona State. They could beon upset alert against number eighteen Utah.
(01:23:10):
They played teams tough this year sofar. Utah has six and two their
eighteenth how about air Force? Littleround of applause for eight to no air
Force right now, taken on army. They're in the top twenty five.
The big win at three thirty onCBS, number twelve Missouri taken on number
two Georgia down there between the hedges, and I think I want to say
Missouri can get this done. Ijust Georgia has been so good in these
(01:23:31):
big games lately, even without BrockBowers. I just don't have a lot
of faith that Missouri can get itdone. Yeah, I agree with you.
Just looking at Georgia's schedule, theydo not have a tough schedule,
but when they do play a teamthat's supposed to give them a tough time,
that's when they seem to play theirbest. No doubt about a three
thirty PM on ESPN Number four FloridaState traveling to Pittsburgh never an easy place
to play at Akrashuer Stadium that's comingup at three thirty on ESPN. I
(01:23:56):
feel like we're in Pittsburgh right now. Feels like this weather and I think
from a of with this game beingat three thirty for Florida State, it
does help them. It will bea little bit warmer. The weather shouldn't
be a factor, but at thistime of year, that's why you were
looking at the schedule. Could thatbe a game where Florida State trips up
because we've seen them struggle in colderweather type of games. But I don't
(01:24:17):
think that's going to be that bigof an issue. But it would be
so appropriate for the acc that Pittsburgh, who just got blown out fifty eight
to seven last week and then comeback and beat Florida State, never say
never in this conference. Pittsburgh hada big win a couple of weeks ago
when nobody expected it, so itcould happen. Number nine Oklahoma Bedlam number
twenty two years old, top ofOklahoma State. The dying rivalry that is
(01:24:42):
Bedlam. It's it's coming to anend here soon. Dylan Gabriel has been
so good this year, nineteen touchdowns, four interceptions. Brin Vinibles team looking
to get back on the winning trackafter losing to Kansas, and I'm thoroughly
encouraged by Brin Vinnables and what they'vedone there. But they got to get
this win. They must get it. They do need to get this win.
And this would be able to showcasethat Brit Vittables is the guy there
(01:25:05):
for Oklahoma, the head coach thatyes they can be a dominant team and
get into the College Football Playoff, especially after last season. But this would
be so appropriate that Oklahoma State isable upset Oklahoma and then next week you
lose to Central Florida. That wouldbe typical for Mike Gundey in Oklahoma State.
(01:25:28):
As the world turns for Mike Gundy. Of course. Number eleven Penn
State at three thirty on Fox.Take it on Maryland on an easy out.
They've got to take on Baby twoof their nineteen touchdowns, six interceptions
for Tongue vo Oli up there inMichigan Penn State seven to one, four
and one of the Big ten. That's not an easy out for them.
They're only a nine point favorite inthat game on the road. Big one
is we talked about earlier. Numberthirteen Louisville taken on Virginia Tech three thirty
(01:25:50):
on the ACC Network. Lousville isa ten point favorite. But again,
this game is for a lot ofthe marbles right now in terms of positioning
in the ACC. Virgia Tech winsthis game, believe it or not.
They're in second place and they cancontrol a lot of what's ahead of them
and get in terms of getting inthe ACC Championship. It's crazy. Virginia
Tech is four and four overall.Yeah, same record as Clemson. Yeah,
(01:26:10):
but in conference they're three and one, so they just don't know how
this thing plays out. And again, Virginia Tech, as much as we
talked about nobody expected Louisville to bein the position that they're in. Nobody
expected Virginia Tech to have an opportunity. They control their destiny. They can
have an opportunity of playing in Charlotteby being able to win out. They
(01:26:31):
really can. And there's so muchoptimism around the program right now in terms
of what they've done of late. We'll see if that translates. You got
some other big games coming up here. East Carolina struggling this year. They're
taking on two lane at home. They're twenty fourth of the country. That's
three thirty on ESPNU. CAL andOregon coming up at five thirty pm.
And again bo Nix has been incrediblethis year. Twenty one touchdowns, one
(01:26:51):
interceptions, is gonna be a lotof rain. It's tough to win in
Eugene, as we know. Ithink Oregon wins, but Cal has been
tough on teams this year. Solook out. Number one, twenty one
Kansas at Iowa State. That's aseven pm kickoff on ESPN Iowa State.
It's actually favored in this game, believe it or not. They've been very
good this year in the big twelvefour to one, and here comes Purdue
traveling into Michigan, and I'm interestedto see how Michigan responds. Although Purdue
(01:27:15):
has been very bad this year overallMichigan, will they be finely tuned off
their bye week or will there besome rust there not only because they've been
off for a week, but becauseall the controversy around that program. Yeah,
all of the controversy. Again,we know how distracting it can be,
even for professionals in the NFL andnot alone college athletes, and how
that will play it, because rightnow it does seem that Michigan and Jim
(01:27:41):
Harbrall they're villains based on everything thatwe say, just the national narrative.
Maybe they'll embrace it. Number fiveWashington at seven thirty on ABC, traveling
down to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseumto take on USC. And this has
upset alert written all over it,at least in terms of where these teams
stack. Washington has now been playingwell lately. USC has been look their
(01:28:02):
USC their defense is terrible. HAYLEB. Williams is thrown for five hundred yards
a game. I'd be on upsetalert here. And of course seven forty
five on CBS. Number fourteen LSUagainst number eight Alabama down in Tuscaloosa.
How about Jayden Daniels. He's beenincredible this year, somebody that we don't
talk about enough for a Heisman runtwenty five touchdowns, three interceptions, and
he gets done on the ground aswell. He definitely does. And this
(01:28:24):
is going to be a scenario. Is there going to be an opportunity to
slow down either offense. I thinkLSU has a better offense than Alabama,
and I think Alabama has a betterdefense. So it's going to be an
interesting scenario to see how that playsout, and it might come down to
last type of second win for oneof those two teams. So adding stuff
a couple of the night caps onFS one ten thirty pm tonight, UCLA
(01:28:45):
number nineteen taken on a very goodArizona team on the road in Tucson.
And how about this Oregon State withDJU taking on Shudar Sanders. A couple
of good quarterbacks this season, ifnot great quarterbacks. But an interesting change
this week is Sean Lewis has beenpulled from the play calling duties and Pat
Shermer, who used to be thecoach of the Giants and the Browns is
suddenly calling plays for Colorado. SeanLewis left a head coaching job to take
(01:29:10):
this offensive cornator job, and halfwaythrough the season you're not calling plays.
Is an analyst and so they hadto demote people so he could actually be
elevated and use that word elevated thereas he's been able to promoted, I
should say, as the play callerthere. So it's a very crazy scenario
because I haven't seen the offensive strugglesnecessarily with Colorado other than pass protection,
(01:29:35):
but that was against also last weeka good UCLA defense that can get after
the quarterback there. So just interestingto see this type of change with Deion
Sanders there as head coach. Theguy calling the defensive place doesn't lose his
job, but they're giving up potloto points each month each week here in
that conference. Colorado's four and fouroverall, Oregon State is sixteenth in the
(01:30:00):
country, six and two, threeand two in the Pac twelve. DJU
has been very good this season. You love to see it there as a
former member of the Tigers. Here. Coming up next, let's take a
final look at Notre Dame and Clemson. The matchups and some final thoughts on
this game. It's the Ingles TailgateShow live from outside a Little John Colisseum

(01:31:29):
guy on this show, those collegehoops are right around the corner, my
friend work sided two days away andwe've got college basketball as the Tigers are
going to be hosting Winthrop here inLittle John Coliseum, and then as you
mentioned, will then be traveling attwo Ashville for Friday's Ashville Championship taking on
UAB and then we'll be taking oneither Maryland or Davidson on that Sunday.
(01:31:54):
So great opportunity next weekend. WatchTigers basketball Friday, come back to Clemson,
watch the Tigers versus Georgia Tech football, and then get back up to
Ashville watch some more basketball. Wegot about a minute left here, so
let's give our final thoughts on what'sgoing to happen today and what has to
happen for Clemson to win. That'sa better way to look at it right
now. I think for me personally, rich I think it's you got to
establish some sort of running game andsome misdirection against this very good defense you
(01:32:16):
mentioned earlier. Tenth overall, Ibelieve ninth and scoring overall defensively, Notre
Dame is and I think you justgot to stop turning the football over.
It's gonna have to be the longgame today, in a game where you
could go the distance with this teamagain, Sam Hartman off his spot.
Yes, defensively, those are someof the keys I'm looking at. What
about you battle at the line?We know that's going to be a big
part of it. Notre Dame wasgoing to want to run the ball and
(01:32:40):
also can with Clemson's defense, weknow they can stop the run, so
that's going to be a big partof it. And then also club Nick
versus Notre Dame secondary, can't hehave an opportunity being able to move the
ball down the field. But it'sgoing to start with the run game.
And just know that Notre Dame's defensewe talked about how good they are,
but they're also number one in thecountry with defensive touchdowns and number three in
(01:33:03):
terms of number of interceptions. Sothis secondary is very good. Yeah,
Xavier Watson company getting it done.Lookout for that. Hey, it's gonna
be a great day today no matterwhat. Four and four Clemson taken on
Notre Dame noon Eastern. You canhear it right here on ninety two point
five WSC for our friend Ruby Downsfrom Ingles for Will Vandervoort for Trey Falco
back in the studio. I'm JohnEllis. This has been the Eagles Tailgate
(01:33:24):
show, with Richmond Weaver coming upnext. More right here on ninety two
point five WeSC. Stay tuned.
