(00:24):
Welcome to the Inner WealthPodcast, where we learn and
choose to live inspired each andevery day.
We're going to talk aboutsomething today that we haven't
talked about in quite a while onthese episodes, and that's the
difference between living insurvival mode and living in
(00:46):
creation mode.
And the reason I'm going backto this today is on the Inner
Wealth Mastermind business calltoday, we had a really really
deep, meaningful conversationabout one of our students that's
building his business insurvival mode and he's building
(01:07):
his business to protect, toshield, to soothe his emotions.
And I know that sounds reallyreally weird, but you know, when
you see it, when you see itclearly, you can't not see it,
(01:47):
but there's a lot of peoplebuilding businesses based on
their emotions, based on theselower level emotions, the
avoidance.
Building a business based onavoidance.
All of these emotions and allof these feelings, all these
internal states, they're allsurvival mode and I really want
to help you today understand thedifference between living in
survival mode and living increation mode.
All right, but first we'regoing to have a little bit of a
(02:10):
physiology conversation, alittle bit of physiology
education.
You experience life through yourcentral nervous system.
You don't really experiencelife in the outside world.
You don't experience theoutside world.
You experience life throughyour central nervous system.
(02:31):
All of these, the five sensesthat you have, all feed your
central nervous system and turnon and off different things.
Some people are living withtheir central nervous system
full of fear and some people areliving with their central into
courage and just things thatadvance joy and peace and love.
(02:53):
And you feel these things inyour body.
(03:15):
These are results of yourcentral nervous system.
And in the central nervoussystem there's two kind of parts
of the nervous system.
There's a parasympatheticnervous system and there's the
sympathetic nervous system.
The parasympathetic nervoussystem is is it was designed to
(03:39):
be your default state.
It's joy, it's peace, it's love, it's bliss, it's calm, it's
enjoyment, it's fulfillment,it's freedom.
That's, when you're in thosestates, your parasympathetic
nervous system is on.
When you're living through yoursympathetic nervous system, you
(04:02):
are living through fight orflight, fear, doubt, worry,
anxiety, depression, pain,suffering.
When you're experiencing thesethings, when you're feeling
these things, you are literallyliving through your sympathetic
nervous system.
Now there's two purposes, twodifferent purposes, for these.
(04:22):
The parasympathetic nervoussystem is just for the enjoyment
of being alive.
When you're enjoying beingalive, you're living through
your parasympathetic nervoussystem and you just get to be.
You enjoy being.
That's when you are fullyimmersed in your human beingness
.
And when your sympatheticnervous system is on, it's
(04:45):
because you're in fight orflight, it's because there's
some kind of survival elementthat your central nervous system
is trying to anchor to.
It's expecting danger.
It's expecting some kind of,it's trying to avoid some kind
of outcome, some circumstance, and your sympathetic nervous
(05:05):
system is.
When.
I say your parasympatheticnervous system was intended to
be your default state.
Your sympathetic nervous systemis meant to be on for very
short periods of time inheightened danger and then shut
off, to be returned back to theparasympathetic nervous system.
And when used effectively, whenthere's danger, your
(05:30):
sympathetic nervous system turnson.
It floods you with cortisol andadrenaline and all of these
freaking hormones of fight orflight and then, after the
danger ends, your body dissolves.
All those hormones dissolve inyour body and your body returns
back to a place of absence ofcortisol and adrenaline and
(05:52):
returns back into theparasympathetic nervous system
where it can return to enjoyinglife.
So, in other words, theparasympathetic nervous system
is about being a human being andthe other is about a human
doing.
It's what am I doing to?
To get out of dodge right, toget out of, to get out of danger
.
It's like doing this.
It's more about doing this thanit is being this and in a
(06:15):
parasympathetic nervous systemis about stillness.
It's about internal stillnessand internal clarity, internal
kind kind of like an internalharmony, where a sympathetic
nervous system is about gettingas much disruptive energy inside
of you so that you can avoidsome circumstance.
Okay, I hope this is makingsense and now I'm setting the
(06:37):
stage because if you reallyreally watch society and if you
pay attention, most of societyis living from their sympathetic
nervous system.
We live in a a very, very, uh,agitated world.
Uh, in an anxiety induced world.
Everything is like hypervigilance.
(07:00):
There's so much stimulation.
Everyone's bouncing from mostpeople not everyone, but most
people are bouncing from thingto thing, looking for that
outcome, looking for thatfeeling, looking for that
emotion, looking for thatcircumstance that's finally
going to bring them the peace.
And what they're really lookingfor is to return back to their
parasympathetic nervous systemand they're looking for a result
(07:23):
in the external world to givethem that peace and that joy
that their parasympatheticnervous system can only give
them.
But they've been wired by life, through life, through their
lives, to remain steadfast intheir sympathetic nervous system
and they never give themselvestime to jump back into their
(07:45):
parasympathetic nervous system, for that to turn on, for them to
enjoy a quality life just as ahuman being, not because of what
they're doing and not becauseof a circumstance.
Now, one of our students talkedabout their bank account and
what happens in our bank accountis we have there's three levels
(08:07):
there's a survival level in ourbank account, there's a safety
level in our bank account andthen there's a wealth level in
our bank account.
Now, wealth level what I meanis that's what's going to give
you freedom, right?
And our survival number isliterally just a number that we
need the currency, the income, the money that we need to just
(08:31):
maintain life, and I'm talkingabout your basic needs, right
Oxygen, water, nutrition, exercise and rest, like just the
basic needs of life, so they'refulfilled and so that you can
have like, so that your survivalis not in jeopardy.
If that makes sense, you haveall the basic essentials to just
(08:54):
being alive.
That's your survival number.
If you look at this we live in.
Most of this podcast has beenlistened to in six continents,
in 84 countries, almost 1500cities around the world, and if
you look at where where this isbeing listened to the most or
downloaded the most, it's mostlyin countries where survival
(09:15):
mode is is not really a thing.
That have listened anddownloaded are coming from areas
where it's modern and there'stechnology and that's why they
can download this podcast andtheir essential needs are not in
jeopardy or in doubt.
All right, so that's yoursurvival number, your safety
(09:37):
number.
I would say your centralnervous system is wired for a
safety number and what thatmeans is if your financial
accumulation or your net worthor your income goes below, if
these levels drop below thatsafety number, your central
(10:00):
nervous system is going to kickup and it's going to alert
danger.
Have you ever had thatexperience?
Have you ever had theexperience where you look at
your bank account and suddenlyyou've got like fear in your
body.
That was the financial setpoint, that was that safety
number being tripped and thatwas your sympathetic nervous
(10:22):
system turning on.
You are just operating in yourparasympathetic nervous system.
A second ago Now you'reoperating in your sympathetic
nervous system and it's allbecause you looked at a bank
account and it was below thelevel of your safety number, so
it fired your central nervoussystem on in your sympathetic
nervous system.
(10:42):
It fired it on and now you'reon high alert.
Now you've got adrenaline andnow you've got cortisol flying
through your body.
Now you've got adrenaline andnow you've got cortisol flying
through your body.
(11:12):
And usually in this situationwhat happens is as a response to
all of these survival hormonesflying through your body.
What happens?
Most people go into action totry to attain something to
alleviate the fear and thestress that that is caused by
their sympathetic nervous system.
And then that last number isyour wealth number.
And if you ever pay attention, most people like when they don't
really ever get to their wealthnumber.
They just keep moving it.
The what?
The number is not intentional.
The number number is just somesubjective number that they've
(11:34):
laid out there that they feellike they'll be okay if they
have that number.
But because their safety numberkeeps elevating higher and
higher and higher, their wealthnumber keeps elevating higher
and higher and even though, likemaybe, last year you had a
thousand dollars and this yearyou have a million, now your
(11:55):
safety number is 950,000.
And even though you had athousand dollars last year and
you have $950,000 this year, that million goes to 949,000.
And suddenly your centralnervous system kicks on, your
sympathetic nervous system kickson, and you've got cortisol and
(12:16):
you're flooded with thesehormones and adrenaline is
running through your bodybecause that arbitrary safety
number that you put in hasanchored into your central
nervous system and it's becomeyour new safe.
And ultimately, what happens, especially here in the first
world?
What happens is we keep raisingthat safety number and we keep
(12:37):
raising that wealth number andwe never really achieve harmony
and balance in our centralnervous system and we keep
trying to fix it.
And what I mean by that is wekeep trying to fix that
triggering in our nervous systemthrough attaining more money
and we never, ever, really getthere.
And even though last year youneeded a thousand dollars to
feel safe, this year you neednine hundred and fifty thousand
(13:00):
dollars, because you tasted amillion and now you're afraid
for it to go back down to onethousand.
So now your, your sympatheticnervous system, trips at
$949,000, even though it's justan arbitrary trip point, but
your body is wired.
You've wired your body throughyour expectations and through
(13:21):
your beliefs and through yourperceptions and through your
preferences.
You've wired your centralnervous system to only feel safe
above $950,000 in your bankaccount.
I hope this is making sense andthis is why, over time, as
especially with the businessowners and the business leaders
(13:41):
that I work with, as they grow,as their business grows, as
their net worth grows, as theirincome grows, they still stay in
the same fight and flight mode, because they never allow that
sympathetic nervous system tokick on and stay on.
They just keep raising theirsafety numbers and their wealth
(14:02):
numbers and their nervous systemkeeps responding to these new
levels they're setting, responding to these new levels
they're setting.
So what happened on today'scall which was beautiful was
that this business owner wastalking about how the income
they just made a shift in theirlife.
They just kind of changedcareers, changed vocations,
(14:24):
jumped from one thing to another.
There's going to be like alittle bit of a lull, the
expectation, but there was.
There was going to be a lull inincome in in their life because
of this transition.
And as they watch their bankaccount go down, their their
sympathetic nervous system iskicking on and and he knew he
(14:44):
was going to be in thistransition.
He knew he was gonna.
He was gonna have a period oftime where his net worth would
probably go down or there wouldbe a little, a little lag.
He knew it.
But his, his nervous system isalerting him for fight, flight,
freeze response, sympatheticnervous systems turning on, even
(15:04):
though he has net worth, eventhough he has assets, even
though he has investments, eventhough he has net worth, even
though he has assets, eventhough he has investments, even
though he has equity stashedaway in places, even though he
has all the resources he needs.
As he watches his bank accountnumber go down, his body's
responding with an alarm, analert.
(15:26):
And on this call I got theopportunity to call a timeout
and say listen, this is abusiness call.
We are running businesses, butthe goal of running a business
isn't to manage the emotions inyour body.
The reason for running abusiness is not to manage your
(15:47):
body.
We're here to manage our bodyseparately from our business.
We manage our business to growand in this situation of this
student, there's a transitionfrom vocation.
There's a little bit of a pause.
The net worth is going down alittle bit, the income is going
down a little bit, the bankaccount's going down a little
(16:08):
bit, but there's still plenty.
You're not anywhere nearsurvival mode, but now your
sympathetic nervous system'skicking on and you're trying to
do stuff to increase the paceand the rate of the income,
getting the income to go back onbecause your body doesn't feel
good to be in, because youhaven't managed your body.
(16:29):
You're still managing yourbusiness through your body or
your body through your business.
They're entangled and in theinner wealth mastermind.
We're not about managing ourbusiness through our body or our
body through our business.
We're here to manage our bodyseparately and our business
(16:51):
separately, to learn how toseparate them, to learn how,
when our business goes down, ourbody is still okay, is still
okay that when our income goesdown, our body is still okay,
that when our net worth goesdown, our body is still okay.
And if you've ever experiencedanybody who self-sabotages, that
(17:12):
when our results go up, westill remain okay in our body.
We don't trip our self-sabotagelimits, our upper limits, when
our net worth goes up.
We don't trip our upper limitswhen our savings, when our bank
account, when our whatever, whatever, when it goes up.
(17:33):
And there are cycles where itwill go up so that your
self-sabotage levels, your upperlimits, your upper trigger
point, so it doesn't go offeither, so you don't fall.
You don't fall into survivalmode just because your income
goes down and you don't trip anupper limit because your income
(17:54):
goes up.
And these are natural humantendencies and typically we
manage our business and our bodyto be in this toxic dance of
managing like I've got thesefeelings, so I got to work
harder.
I don't like what I'm feelingabout my finances, so I'm going
to work harder.
Instead, you start to realizewhen you're in premature
(18:19):
survival mode and you manage theemotions in your body to move,
to shift yourself from thesympathetic nervous system into
the parasympathetic nervoussystem, to shift yourself from
survival mode into creation mode.
That you naturally know how andinstinctually.
There's a great book called theWay of the Peaceful Warrior by
(18:39):
Dan Millman and he talks abouthow you master your inner world.
My new book Inner World, outerWorld.
It's exactly what I'm teachingis you master your inner world
so that you don't have to forceany outcomes in your external
world to be okay.
In your inner world youseparate these two.
You manage your body separatelyfrom your business, these two,
(19:03):
you manage your body separatelyfrom your business.
And when you manage your bodyand you learn to manage your
body and you don't run yourbusiness because of your body,
through your body, you don'tmanage your finances through
your body.
You don't manage anythingoutside of you through your body
.
It allows you to manage thatthing more powerfully, more
effectively, more clearly and ina state of creation mode, not
(19:26):
survival mode.
Running your life, running yourbusiness in survival mode is
trying to keep your emotions incheck, trying to be okay, trying
to feel valuable, trying tofeel worthy, trying to feel
secure, trying to feelsuccessful.
(19:56):
These are all states ofsurvival mode.
You're trying to attain afeeling in your body through an
external circumstance, becausethe absence of that might trip
your nervous system and put youin premature survival mode and
you don't know how to managethat.
So then you go out and youdon't know how to deal with it.
So you go out in the externalworld and you look to chase
(20:19):
circumstances and you look toattain outcomes in the hope, in
the possibility of kicking thatsympathetic nervous system back
over to the parasympatheticnervous system.
And in creation mode we masterthe art of living in our
parasympathetic nervous system.
Naturally we learn how, whenwe're in our sympathetic nervous
(20:41):
system and there's no danger inthe world, how to naturally
shift back into theparasympathetic nervous system
through breathing, throughreleasing, through shadow work,
through letting go, throughmeditation, through mindfulness
activities, through journaling, and you shift that inner state
(21:04):
by getting clear about what it'stelling you, by getting clear
about what the reality is thatyou're living in and managing
your body, to naturally shiftfrom survival mode to creation
mode, from sympathetic nervoussystem to the parasympathetic
nervous system, the creationmode from sympathetic nervous
system to the parasympatheticnervous system.
But in the Inner WealthMastermind we have calls
(21:27):
dedicated to learning how tomanage your body.
We also have a call to learninghow to manage and master your
business.
But there's times where both ofthose areas of focus converge
and it's up to us to separatethem, to learn how to manage our
body separately from ourbusiness.
(21:47):
Just because your bank accountgoes down does not mean that
your body needs to go into fightor flight.
Just because your net worthgoes down doesn't mean that your
body needs to go into fight orflight.
Just because your bank accountdoesn't meet your preference
does not mean your body needs togo into fight or flight.
Just because your bank accountdoesn't meet your preference
Does not mean your body needs togo into fight or flight,
especially when you're resourcerich.
(22:09):
But you have an expectation andyour nervous system is built
around something even higherThan your survival needs.
And if you keep raising thatsafety number, then you'll
always stay in fight or flightmode, and you're never meant to
stay in fight or flight mode forlong stretches of time.
(22:31):
And when we master our body, welearn how to naturally move
from one state to another.
And then, and only then, can wereally master the art of
building a business for the sakeof building a business instead
of building a business for ourown emotional needs, our
survival-based needs.
(22:53):
Guys, I hope this helps.
It's been a powerful day, it'sbeen a powerful message if you,
if you're sitting, if you'resitting still.
This morning I was sittingstill and I was practicing some
stillness and all of a sudden, since I'm still, I started to
feel inside of my body unsafe.
I had sat for a long period oftime and my body started feeling
(23:18):
unsafe and I started feelingtriggers and I got to feel where
my body was shifting intosurvival mode for no reason
whatsoever.
And I got the opportunity toclear that.
And that's what happens whenyou learn to master the signals
that are inside of your body Isthat when there's premature
survival mode, your body goesinto fight or flight mode
(23:39):
prematurely.
Or when you're not in dangerand your body's telling you
you're in danger or there'sfuture danger, then you know how
to master the art of movingback into the peaceful part of
your nervous system from thechaotic and the stressful.
Hope this helps.
I love you, I appreciate you.
Thanks for your listenership, your viewership, and I'm just
(24:01):
going to keep coming back andI'm just going to keep talking
about.
This central nervous systemthing has been a key theme and I
have a feeling we're going tokeep revisiting this over and
over, because you onlyexperience your life.
You only experience lifethrough your central nervous
system, not in the world itself, not in the world itself, and if
it's not peaceful in there, then you haven't mastered the
(24:24):
art of knowing how to masteryour body instead of rearrange
your circumstances, so your bodycan be okay.
We'll keep returning.
I hope you do too.
