(01:04):
None. Previously on the island in the
Pacific. All right, Birdman took off, so
I'm alone now. This is incredible.

(01:25):
Absolutely. Incredible.
It's possible Jeremy's here. I hope he's alive.
Looks like this place has some interesting terrain.
Patty, can you? Hear me.
Hey, hey, Cat. I got you.
Yes, hey, Oh my God, I. Can't believe you're there.
I mean, is it, is it too soon totell?

(01:45):
But like, are there like any signs?
Of Jeremy so far. Found what looks like a
bracelet. Sadie, it's Matthew.
Matthew. Where are you?
I found it. I found the island.
I'm here. I fucking knew it.
I knew. He was.
Telling the truth. Please prepare yourself for both
kinds of news. OK?
But Jeremy has been gone a long time.

(02:10):
He's alive, I know it. What I'm looking at a little
ways from me, maybe 100 yards away, up a bit higher on one of
the Bluffs to my W, is somethingweird, something definitely
shiny and reflective, just like Jeremy said.
I'm going to just have to hike to it, find out what it is.

(02:32):
Maybe Jeremy could be around in that.
Area, Jeremy. Wow.
What is that? I'm looking at large, immense
statues. The material is like nothing
I've ever seen before. Oh, my God.
The material is. Yeah, The material is changing

(02:52):
color. It's turning gold.
All of them are changing. This is.
What Jeremy saw. It had to have been Jeremy.
Tomorrow I'll. Circumference the island.
Looking for Jeremy? I have 2 1/2 more.
Days and with hiking on foot that time's.
Going to go. Fast.

(03:13):
I won't have. Much of it Where the hell could
he be? My name is Kathleen Goldstein,

(03:34):
I'm an investigative journalist, and this is The Island in the
Pacific Episode 7. The last thing we heard
documenting this investigation has tested my will, my sense of
self, everything that I thought I understood about this world,

(03:59):
it may have all changed. It has changed What is going on
here on that island? Where is Jeremy?
What if they found? What are those statues up on the
Bluffs? The clock is ticking for Matthew
to find Jeremy. As of now, he will have two full

(04:20):
days and just a few hours on thefinal day before he gets picked
up by seaplane at his rendezvouspoint on the South side of the
island. That morning Matthew text me
from a satellite phone giving mehis plan for the day.
He sends me a couple photos of the statues that he took with
his mobile phone, but transferring them and then

(04:43):
sending them over a satellite phone really compresses the
images and they come out pretty low resolution.
It's tough to see any detail in them.
From what I can tell, the statuesize is impressive.
Matthew has a full day ahead of him, combing the island trying
to find any trace of Jeremy. It is Wednesday August 21st.

(05:31):
It's a really rough night of sleep.
Sounds are crazy here at night. Honestly don't even know what
kind of animal is going to be onthis place.
I think I got, I think I got some recording of it.

(05:51):
It's kind of a blur in the middle of the night.
I'm groggy and I need to pull out of it because I have a
monster day of canvassing this island to find any clue of

(06:13):
Jeremy or hopefully Jeremy himself.
I'm. Currently boiling up some water

(06:37):
for coffee which I need badly. It's using a small propane
canister with an amicus igniter, which most hikers use when
they're off the grid or camping and.

(06:58):
I've got my water boiling and we'll use one of these coffee
grain pouches just like. Pour over.
I'm a bit of a coffee snob and these things are pretty solid.
Oatmeal will be mixed with the remaining hot water.

(07:23):
Add some dehydrated blueberries in there, we got ourselves a
breakfast. Be heading West back the same
way I started yesterday, passingthe statue site and continuing
clockwise around the outer perimeter of the island.

(07:44):
It's tempting to go waiting intothis jungle, but I need to work
from the outside in covering this island in a logistical
manner. Plus that jungle looks dense and
I can't afford to go knocking around in there and possibly get
lost till I get a better idea ofthis whole place.

(08:10):
Oh my God, that's good coffee. Matthew ends up recording a lot
of random thoughts as he circleshis way around the island.
I'm not going to present all of them as some have absolutely
nothing to do with anything, just Matthew basically talking
to himself along his walk down the beach to keep his own

(08:33):
company, and some are just more personal to Matthew himself.
Some self reflection. That is until something catches
Matthew's eye later in the day. I see nearly complete circling
the outer perimeter of the island.
Jeremy. Jeremy.

(09:02):
Jeremy. Holy shit, I I see something up
in the Bluffs. I'm actually almost back around
to my own base camp, I think, and I'm seeing some colored
items up in the Bluffs there. Like another camp maybe.

(09:25):
Yeah, I mean, that looks like that looks like something I'm
making my way up there to see ifthat's Jeremy's camp, Jeremy.
Could it actually be Jeremy's campsite that Matthew has
stumbled onto? This is possibly the closest
we've ever been to finding Jeremy.

(09:48):
All right, this has to be Jeremy's camp.
It can't be more than a couple 100 yards east of my campsite up
in a similar cave carve out. I didn't see it from the beach
on arrival. This is crazy.
This is crazy. Where is he?
Where is Jeremy? Matthew has circled the island,

(10:09):
nearly getting back to his own campsite and having just
stumbled onto what appears to beJeremy's camp.
Which means Jeremy could only bein one of the two places left to
look, somewhere out in the deep blue ocean or towards the middle
of the island. Somewhere in that wild jungle,

(10:32):
Matthew starts going through Jeremy's items.
All right, item inventory. There's a small fire pit, a
sleeping bag, an empty jug, presumably used for water.
Looks like. A small solar power charger

(10:53):
laying on the ground, Few protein bar wrappers and
backpack. All right, there's some clothes
in the backpack and OK, a cell phone doesn't, Nope, doesn't

(11:15):
have any battery left. This all has.
To be Jeremy's. Where the fuck is he?
Matthew sends me a text with this update, then calls Sadie
from a satellite phone to bring her up to speed on his findings.

(11:38):
Matthew. Sadie, Sadie, can you hear me?
Yeah, Sadie, it's. Yeah, it's me.
Hey. It's so good to hear your voice.
Are you are you OK? I'm OK.
I'm OK. Listen, I think I found the
campsite that Jeremy is using and and some of his items I I
just haven't found him yet. OK, but that's good.

(12:00):
The right like what? What did you find?
Well. There's there's a sleeping bag
here, solar charger and a backpack with some clothes and A
and a cell phone. Why wouldn't he have his cell
phone? Well.
I don't want you to panic. Look, his phone has no juice
left. OK, Sadie, it is.
I don't don't think he was getting enough charge from a
solar charger. I wouldn't read into it much.

(12:21):
He he probably left it because it was a brick to him.
OK. Listen, my camp is just a little
bit West of here. I'm getting close to sundown, so
I'm going to go grab my stuff and move it over here in case he
comes back later, all right? Yeah, I, I that sounds like a
good idea, yeah. I'm going to try and and charge
his phone with my charger and see if I can get into his phone

(12:44):
and just look for anything that might give me an idea of what's
going on. Do you do you know if Jeremy had
a passcode or or what that mightbe?
I I I honestly think he uses allzeros.
All zeros. OK, got it.
I'll. I'll try that.
I, I I need to go Sadie, I don'thave much daylight left, OK?
OK. Yeah.

(13:04):
Thank you so much, Matthew. Please, please Matthew, find
him. Doing everything I possibly can
and I'll update you when I can. Thank you.
Matthew makes his way over to his camp, about 200 yards West
of where Jeremy had set up his own.
After collecting all of his gear, Matthew makes his way back

(13:25):
over to Jeremy's camp and sets up shop there just before
sunset. If Jeremy is still alive
somewhere on that island, this is the best place Matthew can
wait. For now, at least, until
Daybreak the next morning. Who knows, maybe Jeremy will
come waltzing back into his camptonight.

(13:46):
We can only hope. What Matthew has done to this
point is beyond remarkable. I still think about his bravery
and commitment to the case and what he's accomplished in his
search for Jeremy. 39 days. That is how long Jeremy has been
missing now. That's a long time to be alone

(14:08):
on an island. It's not out of the question
that Jeremy is alive somewhere out there, maybe in a new
location within the island's jungle, but signs of that don't
look to be in his favor. A harsh reality we must come to
terms with. Would he just leave his stuff at
that campsite if he had made another one?

(14:29):
Wouldn't he take his sleeping bag with him?
That is my first thought when bringing up the idea of him
relocating. Or maybe he will come back to
his camp at the Bluffs. Maybe.
I've made my way. Back over to.
Jeremy's camp After grabbing allof my gear from the original

(14:53):
campsite, the sun has just set and there's still no sign of
Jeremy. I can only hope that he comes
back here to his camp and we cango home together.
I'll probably scare the shit outof him if he does come back here
and finds me waiting for him. If that doesn't happen, here's

(15:16):
the plan of attack. I'm currently charging all of my
comms. I'll save enough battery from my
solar charger to give Jeremy's phone some juice and see if I
can crack into it in the morning.
I'm pretty exhausted, so I'll try to get some needed sleep
here shortly. Possibilities are narrowing.

(15:43):
That jungle seems like a bitch. It's dense, from what I've seen
around the edges, and unless he walked right out into the ocean,
Jeremy's got to be somewhere inside that jungle.
He's got to be somewhere in there.
As hopeful as I am, I'm afraid of what I may discover.

(16:06):
But there's always hope, right? Day 40 Matthew wakes with the

(17:01):
sunrise. After getting everything in
order and charging Jeremy's phone up, Matthew calls me from
a satellite phone to report in. It's such a relief when you
call. I'm still here.
How are you doing? I'm OK, I got some much needed

(17:21):
rest. But listen, I I I wanted to
bring you up to speed before this day got started.
Yeah. Matthew fills me in on the
campsite discovery after notifying me with his text
yesterday. I won't repeat that part of the
conversation for time's sake. It's just kind of really crazy,
Kath. I'm assuming Jeremy didn't

(17:45):
return to camp. Unfortunately, no, and there's
just a couple of things. I went through more of Jeremy's
backpack last night. I found another compartment in
it and there was food in there. Uneaten food.
Yeah, some protein bars and dehydrated packets, that's not.

(18:08):
Good. Yeah, I was thinking the same
thing. So I mean, what are you going to
do? Well, there's one more thing.
I got into Jeremy's phone. Really.
Yeah, Sadie thought his passcodewas all zeros.
It was. Is this?

(18:29):
Is there anything of relevance? You could say that there's a
video on there. It's kind of crazy, Kev.
What's going on? I'm just going to play it so you
can hear the audio OK? Oh, OK.

(18:56):
We only have 45 minutes. He told me that.
He never. Told me that.
Who are they? Bring that over here.
Let's go. Stop, stop.
I don't care what he says, We have to do this now.
Open it up and carry the bag down.
I'll go grab the rack. I don't care, just see it now.

(19:27):
Hurry up. And open the premium.
What the fuck is going? On Did you hear that?
What is that? What happened?
Jeremy recorded people on the island.
What? The video files are too big to
send to you over the satellite phone, otherwise I would.

(19:49):
But yeah, describing a Jeremy was hiding in the woods behind a
tree inside the jungle here, andhe was recording these guys like
three men, it looks like, from adistance.
There are people there. It looks like it and they were
wearing uniforms. What kind of uniforms it?

(20:10):
Looked official, like military. And the video ends there.
Sort of. It looks like you dropped the
phone and you just left it therefor a bit.
He probably just didn't want to make him so physical.
And he sounded afraid of these people.
Something spooked them. I mean, if you're alone on a
deserted island and you see other people, you would think

(20:33):
that that's a good sign, right? Yeah.
Right. Well, he made another video
right after that talking to his phone camera.
All right, hold on 'cause I'll I'll play it now for you.
OK. I don't know what the fuck is
going on here, but something is not right.
Something is definitely up here.It was a fucking submarine off

(21:00):
the eastern coast. I couldn't tell who it was, so I
stayed back. I just got video of them from
the jungle. It looked like there were three
of them, maybe more though I I think others stayed back on the
coastline from what I could tell.
He opened a hatch in the ground.Man that there's a hatch here in

(21:25):
the jungle that goes underground.
What is this place? What does that go to?
I don't know what is happening but this place isn't on any maps
and this fucking sub shows up. Dudes in uniforms and an
underground hatch. Seriously, what the fuck is this

(21:46):
place? All right.
And then there's just one more video of him talking to his
phone camera here. He didn't play on it.
Back at camp now. I'm going to check this shit out
first thing in the morning. You think I don't know what to
do? No, I do.

(22:09):
I have to. I've come this far.
I have to see what the fuck is going on here.
Wow man, my phone is about to die.
Stupid solar charger's not getting any juice from the sun.
It's not working. So I have about 7% battery left.

(22:34):
OK, the Hatch is located northeast.
There's a rock formation just tothe southwest of it about 50-60
yards away, and there's a bunch of lemon trees around it, around
the Hatch. You can't miss it, but but it's
deep in. OK, You have to look.
The best way to get there is entering from the east point on
the beach. OK, there's a tree on the Cliff.

(22:56):
That's a good indicator it, it looks like a pretzel.
The trunk is all twisted up. Look for that.
It's it's big. It's easy to see from the
shoreline. That's a good place to walk in
from. Travel then West into the jungle
about 200 yards, then break directly north about another 100
yards or so. That's where the lemon Grove is.

(23:19):
And the Hatch. I'm going there tomorrow.
I need to be back here for my rendezvous pickup by 3:00 PM, so
it's going to be an early morning.
Time to get some rest. See, if for some reason you're

(23:46):
watching this, I'll love you more than anything.
That's it. Matthew, what is happening?
I don't know, but if Jeremy's live on this island, he may be
down on that hatch. This seems dangerous, Maddie.

(24:07):
I don't have a good. Feeling.
Yeah, I know. But I have to go.
If he's in there, I have to go. I would want someone to come
find me if the roles were switched.
I need to know what's going on here.
Is that the last video on his phone?
Yeah, and no photos. No phone probably died shortly

(24:28):
after that. He said he was at 7%.
The video's dated July 15th. Damn.
It's so long ago. Yeah.
Are you going to tell Sadie? Not yet.
Not until I find out more. Is there anything I can do?

(24:52):
Did you get those coordinates helaid out for the Hatch?
Yeah, write them down. That's where I'm going.
