Settimane e settimane passarono prima che mi venisse il coraggio di raccontare a Graham, mio marito, che nel giro di pochi giorni, mi erano capitati due incidenti stradali con la macchina a noleggio che io avevo soprannominato Grigia.
Cominciamo con il primo incidente:
Ti premetto che quando raccontai l’accaduto a Graham, invertì l’ordine di quello che era successo. La ragione è semplice. Nel secondo caso ero la vittima, ma nel primo ero stata ingenua.
Ti racconto come sono andate le cose veramente, cioè nell’ordine giusto.
La protagonista è una certa Suora che non abita più a Montepulciano. Chiamiamola Suor Bontà. E’ giovane e pura, energica come una pila Duracell ed ha un sorriso che illumina il cielo.
La sua innocenza mi ispirava un grande senso di protezione.
Un giorno la incontrai per strada proprio davanti a casa nostra. Era trepidante perche stava per prendere la patente. Devi capire che per lei il guidare non era solo una questione di libertà ma anche un punto di orgoglio personale che l’avrebbe messa al pari delle altre Suore.
Quel triste giorno, quando ci vedemmo davanti a casa mia, Suor Bontà tornava dalla lezione di guida, dove si era esercitata a fare il parcheggio ad S in retromarcia.
A fine lezione, l’istruttore si era raccomandato di esercitarsi il più possibile perchè altrimenti il giorno dell’esame avrebbe avuto paura ed ansia.
Così come mi vide, mi supplicò, “Silvana, ti prego di lasciarmi fare un po’ di pratica con Grigia.” Per un attimo esitai perchè la polizza assicurativa prevedeva che Grigia potesse essere guidata solo da me. Ma il desiderio di sostenerla era piu’ forte della mia incertezza. Così, dopo un attimo, eravamo entrambe in macchina. Lei sul sedile del guidatore aggiustando lo specchietto retrovisore, io in quello del passaggero mettendomi la cintura.
E mentre le facevo le classiche raccomandazioni di prudenza, lei aveva già acceso il motore ed impugnato la leva del cambio. Solo che, invece di inserirla nella posizione “R” per retromarcia, con una mossa rapida e decisa inserì la prima marcia e parti di scatto in avanti, urtando il cancello di fronte. “Accidenti.” “ Caspita.”
Purtroppo non era un semplice cancello, ma un importante manufatto in ferro battuto risalente alla metà del ‘600, posto all’ingresso di una delle più prestigose cantine di Montepulciano all’interno della quale riposano oggi un centinaio di botti piene del famoso vino nobile.
Saltammo fuori di corsa per controllare la gravità del danno sia al cofano che al cancello. Grazie a Dio, al cancello niente, un pò di tinta tirata via, ma niente di serio. Grigia però ebbe la peggio con una bella ammaccatura.
La povera “Suor Bontà” impallidì, ed io con lei. Ci sentimmo colpevoli entrambe.
Con le lacrime che le scendevano lungo il suo volto angelico, mi fece giurare di non raccontare nulla né alla Madre Superiora né alle altre Suore perché l’avrebbero giudicata male e presa in giro.
Per quanto mi riguardava, il giudizio che mi preoccupava di piu’ era quello di Graham, che una volta saputo l’accaduto, avrebbe scosso la testa guardandomi con un’aria incredula.
Da buone cattoliche, abbiamo entrambe espiato la nostra colpa andando insieme in Chiesa a pregare. Io per non aver saputo dire di no e lei per aver approfittato della mia bontà.
