Ever wonder what it's like to stand backstage with rock legends? Jay takes us on a nostalgic journey to his youth when he and "Long-Haired Mark" watched Van Halen perform from the side stage during the Monsters of Rock tour. These personal memories frame a fascinating discussion about how band relationships evolve – and sometimes dissolve – over time, with Van Halen's members unable to reunite even for a tribute to Eddie Van Halen after his passing.

The music industry conversation spans generations of artists, from established acts to emerging talents. We dive into Hailstorm's upcoming album "Everest," Linkin Park's reinvention with a female vocalist, and Metallica's massive world tour featuring an eclectic mix of supporting acts. As we discuss Shaboosie's record-breaking 40 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country charts and the star-studded performances at Stagecoach Festival, the show explores how artists continuously evolve while staying connected to their roots.

The heart of the episode centers on our listeners' passionate responses to the question: "What cover song is better than the original?" From Disturbed's hauntingly powerful version of "Sound of Silence" to Guns N' Roses' energetic take on "Live and Let Die," the conversation reveals how artists transform familiar works into something uniquely their own. We also spotlight independent duo Circe, examining how their DIY approach to music creation represents the changing landscape of artist development in today's industry.

Whether you're a longtime music fan or simply curious about the stories behind the songs, this episode offers a genuine, unfiltered look at the creative forces that shape the soundtrack of our lives. Join us at jfranzycom to continue the conversation!

Question of the day.

(01:05):
Question of the day today iswhat is a cover song that is
better than the original?
What is a cover song that isbetter than the original?
Go ahead, put your comments inthe comment section and we will
read those out a little later inthe show.

Tiffany Mason (01:24):
Fair enough, Sounds good, fair enough.

Jay Franze (01:29):
All right Story time , my friend Story time.
Get on the story mat everybody.
One of my best friends in thewhole wide world is a gentleman
named Mark.
He used to call him long-hairedMark because I had several
friends named Mark and my motherneeded a way to identify them.

Tiffany Mason (01:48):
I was just going to ask if it was your mom.

Jay Franze (01:51):
So one was Long-Haired Mark, one was Jewish
Mark and whoever else.
So Long-Haired Mark, a friendof mine, also into music, we
played in a band together as ayoung'un.
We played in a band calledBurning Heart.
We did that through earlycollege days.
It was a rock band, if you canimagine that.
But, he was a guitar player, avery good guitar player.

(02:12):
So we formed a band calledBurning Heart and we played
together for a few years and itwas a good time.
But during that time we alsohad an opportunity to go
backstage to the Monsters ofRock tour in Maine, of all
places, and we got to meet ahandful of bands.
We get to meet Metallica and weget to meet Scorpions and Dokken

(02:32):
and a few others, but, mostimportantly, we get to meet the
band Van Halen, a band that bothof us looked up to.
So Van Halen was always one ofmy favorite bands Journey,
boston, van Halen and Heart thefour bands that I grew up
listening to the most.
But we got a chance to meetthem and we got a chance to

(02:53):
watch them perform.
We were actually standing onthe side of the stage and got
the chance to see the whole show.
It was very cool.
Oh, wow.
They were very nice people andthis was the days of Sammy Hagar
, so Van Hagar and it was a verygood show.
They were very nice people.
We get to talk to them forquite a bit and they were

(03:14):
extremely fun joking and it wasjust a good time, right.
They clearly enjoyed beingaround each other.

Tiffany Mason (03:23):
How old were you?

Jay Franze (03:24):
I was probably 19 at the time Okay, right out of
high school, early college years.
But over time Van Halen andSammy Hagar have kind of parted
ways and they don't seem to getalong very well anymore.
So I tell you this becausethey're in the news this week

(03:45):
and Sammy Hagar, now that Eddiehas passed, he hasn't talked to
Alex in a long time, you know, over 20 years he hasn't talked
to Alex.
They want to do a tribute forEddie Van Halen when he passed
away.
Even David Lee Roth, who alwaysbutted heads with everybody,
but specifically Sammy, becauseSammy took David Lee Roth's
place they always butted headswith everybody, but specifically

(04:06):
Sammy, because Sammy took DavidLee Roth's place.
They always butted heads andeven when they toured around
together they would butt headson tour.
But even they could agree toget together and play a show on
behalf of Eddie, but Alex justwould not do it.
And they even wanted to haveWolfgang, which is Eddie's son,
play guitar and take the role ofEddie for that night not to

(04:27):
ever take the place, but to takethe role of Eddie for that
night.
But Alex just refused to do itand said it without Eddie, that
it's not Van Halen and that wasthe end of it.
So I saw that in the news todayand it just reminded me of all
that.

Tiffany Mason (04:42):
Well, I think we were talking about bands.
I'm trying to remember what thediscussion was before, the meat
of the discussion, or whatever, but you were talking about how
they cut their first album, orwhatever, and then they all
start fighting with each otherand the band breaks up, right?

Jay Franze (04:59):
yeah.

Tiffany Mason (05:02):
It was right, in line with the typical rock band
storyline.

Jay Franze (05:06):
Yeah, we were talking about Alice Cooper.
Oh yeah.
Getting together with hisoriginal band after 50 years.
Right.
But yeah, I mean Sammy Hagar.
Everybody says, well, it wasDavid Lee Roth, he was there
first, but Sammy Hagar put outjust as much material with Van
Halen as David Lee Roth did wasthere first, but Sammy Hagar put
out just as much material withVan.
Halen as David.
Lee Roth did so.
They both had the same amountof time and they both put out

(05:28):
extremely good material.
And then Gary Cherone came inand took Sammy's place, gary
Cherone being the lead singer ofthe band Extreme.
He came in and took Sammy'splace in as much as Extreme is
one of my favorite bands and VanHalen's one of my favorite
bands, I do not feel like thatwas a good match.

(05:49):
Yeah.
Where Sammy's a traditional rocksinger and even David LaGroff
not necessarily a singer but aperformer and just a showman.
Where Gary Cherone is a showmanbut he's a singer and he likes
putting together these extremelycomplicated songs.
That that's just not what VanHalen is, so I don't think that

(06:10):
version of.
Van Halen did anything worthnoting.

Tiffany Mason (06:14):
Mm-hmm, Interesting.
That was a collab that wentwrong.

Jay Franze (06:20):
You know I'm a big fan of David Lee Roth's version
of Van Halen.
I'm a big fan of Sammy Hagar'sversion.
Most people make that divideand go one way or the other.
I'm a big fan of.
David.
Lee Roth's version of Van Halen.
I'm a big fan of Sammy Hagar'sversion.
Most people make that divideand go one way or the other.
Not you, no, not me, not at all.

Tiffany Mason (06:32):
Can't be divided.
Well, hailstorm is in theheadlines again.
Last week we talked about theirsong coming out, darkness
Always Wins, and now we'retalking about their upcoming
album, everest.
It will be coming out in Augustand then they will do a tour
North American and European tourstarting later this year Nice.

Jay Franze (06:56):
We're already starting.
I'm already reaching for thebutton, George do me a favor,
buddy, you tell me when to hitthat button tonight.
You get first call.
Yes, george is in the house.
George, you get first calltonight.

Tiffany Mason (07:08):
As soon, as you tell me to hit that button.
I'm going to hit it.
You're going to be waiting.
You're going to be twitchingagain.

Jay Franze (07:16):
I know we talked about the song Darkness Always
Wins last week, and while weboth appeared to like it for the
most part, it had a very slowstart, and I'm anxious now to
see what the rest of that albumis going to be like if it's
going to take that direction orif that was just a piece off of

(07:37):
that album.
But I'm also anxious to go seehim perform again.
I've seen him a few times now.
I had a chance to take thefamily to see him, so I'll still
look forward to that.

Tiffany Mason (07:45):
Yeah, you shared the pictures with me.
It looked like a nice time andyou had said that Lizzie went up
to your daughter and gave her ahug and you shared pictures of
that too.
So that was really sweet andjust to see, you know, see it
for real, or see it in real life.

Jay Franze (07:59):
I did put that picture up on Instagram, if
anybody wants to check it out.

Tiffany Mason (08:03):
Awesome, awesome, okay, well, linkin Park.
They too are unveiling theirnew single, unshattered, ahead
of their US spring tour, markinga new chapter for the band.
I don't know if I've heard thissong.
Have you heard the Unshatteredsong?

Jay Franze (08:21):
Yeah, I've heard their new music and I'm anxious
again to go see them perform, tosee what Linkin Park is now
like having a female-frontedrock band versus a male-fronted
rock band.

Tiffany Mason (08:33):
My guess is you'll like it better.

Jay Franze (08:35):
You think so.
I don't know.
I mean, they are definitely avery good band.

Tiffany Mason (08:42):
I know, but you got to.
You know your calling card isthe chick-led I like
female-fronted rock bands.

Jay Franze (08:48):
but Chester, he was just awesome.
It doesn't have to befemale-fronted, I just like
female-fronted.

Tiffany Mason (08:57):
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
Okay, well, also in the news isMiss Metallica.
We brought him up last week, sadly.

Jay Franze (09:03):
Did you say Miss Metallica, miss Metallica, miss.

Tiffany Mason (09:05):
Metallica is in the news.
Is Metallica?
We brought him up last week.
You say Miss Metallica, missMetallica, miss Metallica is in
the news again.

Jay Franze (09:10):
I love you so much.
I'm sorry.
Okay, I'm going to startplaying.

Tiffany Mason (09:15):
Enter Sandman for you, don't get me, huh, I'm
bothered.
Okay, so Metallica's M72 World,or M72 tour, kicked off april
12th in las vegas and they hadspecial guests like limp biscuit
, suicidal tendencies andpantera.
The tour includes multiplenorth american dates before

(09:36):
heading overseas, and I actuallylearned today that they have a
podcast.
So I wonder if that podcastwill be, you know, sometimes
having commentary about theirtour and then how it goes
overseas.
So it's called the MetallicaOfficial Podcast.
It's very unique in naming.

Jay Franze (10:00):
It's very original.

Tiffany Mason (10:02):
Right.
I'm never going to make acomment on somebody else's name
the jay franzy show oh, yeah, sure but when I looked it up I
did see that there were othermetallic podcasts.
So you know, I always joke likethere's a podcast about that.
So there's three podcasts aboutmetallica alone, which I guess
I wouldn't have guessed that.
But there's podcasts like usthat are surely entertaining.

(10:26):
But then there there's podcastor or Metallica.
It's probably just entertaining.
If you have an interest, Iwould encourage you to look up.
Of course, after listening toour episodes, then look it up.

Jay Franze (10:38):
I wonder if they talked to the therapist on the
podcast.
After seeing that, I justcannot get that out of it.
Anytime anybody even mentionsMetallica at all, that's the
first thing that comes to mindis their therapist.

Tiffany Mason (10:50):
That's so funny because I was listening to a
podcast today, of course, whiledriving around, and the lady was
talking about how she is acelebrity.
And she was talking about whenshe meets other celebrities and
like when they're douchey orsomething you know, and then she
goes to watch their movie ortheir show or something and
she's like, yeah, I just can'tget it out of my head.

(11:10):
Yeah, yeah, it ruins it for you.

Jay Franze (11:14):
I'd like to see limp biscuit too.
That's a band to me that I'msurprised they're still
performing.
They were so gimmicky when theyfirst came out that it just
blows my mind that they're stillperforming.
It also blows my mind that theydiscovered my wife's favorite
band is Stained.
So it blows my mind that theydiscovered the band Stained.
Yeah.
But yeah, it's crazy.
I'd also like to see Pantera, because I didn't think they were

(11:38):
still playing.

Tiffany Mason (11:39):
I didn't think either one of them were still
playing.

Jay Franze (11:41):
Well, guess what?

Tiffany Mason (11:42):
As soon as I stopped, listening to them on
the radio and I assume the bandbroke up it's over tiffany's
done, it's over folks anyway, okay, stagecoach festival was
held april 25th through 27th incalifornia, like we talked about
, there were headlineperformances from Zach Bryan, no

(12:06):
T Jelly Roll and Luke Combs.

Jay Franze (12:12):
At least you caught yourself that time.

Tiffany Mason (12:15):
I do not know how it's like once you learn
somebody's name wrong, you knowlike you just can't learn it the
right way?
No, so every time I go to sayit, I always question myself.
Now, anywho, there were notablemoments, including Post Malone
bringing out Ed Sheeran and LukeCombs performing with the
Backstreet Boys.

Jay Franze (12:34):
Yes, what a surprise that Post is doing a
collaboration.

Tiffany Mason (12:38):
I know I can't believe it.
Honestly, I can't believe hehas time to do them all.

Jay Franze (12:46):
I guess that's what happens when you just go on the
road and play with whoever, whoever you want I guess maybe
that's kind of like who he is,though right, because didn't you
say that?
Um, if he walks into a bar innashville and he's the nicest
guy in the world and he justgets up and plays with everybody
he really is I mean all theparts of him.
I mean we joke about hiscollaborations.
Damn, you can't get any morepopular collaborating with every

(13:07):
other popular artist out there.

Tiffany Mason (13:10):
Right, it's a great marketing strategy.
It's probably fun.

Jay Franze (13:14):
Fair enough.

Tiffany Mason (13:15):
Different crowd, different vibe, luke Combs and.

Jay Franze (13:17):
Backstreet Boys I don't know, maybe I'll have to
go back and check it out.

Tiffany Mason (13:23):
Yeah, I don't see it, although he can have fun
like chicken fried, right,that's him.

Jay Franze (13:29):
I don't think you're on with chicken fried.

Tiffany Mason (13:32):
Oh, I'm thinking Zac Brown band.

Jay Franze (13:35):
You know me, george, how about now, buddy, can I hit
that button now?

Tiffany Mason (13:41):
No, because I corrected myself.

Jay Franze (13:43):
Oh, okay.

Tiffany Mason (13:44):
Without prompting .

Jay Franze (13:45):
Well, it took prompting, I just didn't give
you the answer.

Tiffany Mason (13:49):
Yeah, you did Okay, you did Okay.
Next story Shaboozy.
Of course we know a bar song, tipsy.
It's continuing to dominate theBillboard Hot Country Song
Charts, marking its 40th week atnumber one.
That's insane, its 40th week atnumber one, that's insane 40th
week.
Weren't we just reporting his32nd or 34th week?

Jay Franze (14:10):
All the power to him .
And yeah, we've been around along time, george says not yet.

Tiffany Mason (14:15):
Thank you, george .
Okay, so I was listening to theradio and Tipsy came on, sang
along and then it was Shaboosie.
But it's not the Tipsy song orthe bar song.
It was a song called Amen thathe collaborated with Jelly Roll,
and Jelly Roll is another one.
Another surprise yeah, he's theone that's done a lot of

(14:38):
collaborating as well.
You know who, I don't think, has collaborated Jelly Roll and
Bose Malone.

Jay Franze (14:47):
You know what I think they have?

Tiffany Mason (14:49):
Okay.

Jay Franze (14:50):
I mean, I would I think so.

Tiffany Mason (14:51):
It seems like they.
Yeah, I would think they have.

Jay Franze (14:53):
But oh, you know what I didn't tell you either On
Stagecoach, you know who playedStagecoach, coach.
Tell me now, coach, I got totalk slower.
Do you know?
Do Stagecoach I've got to talkslower.
Do you know who performedStagecoach?
Kevin Bacon no.

Tiffany Mason (15:12):
Oh he performed Footloose.
I was going to say he's got aband.

Jay Franze (15:18):
The Bacon Brothers.

Tiffany Mason (15:20):
Oh, I did not know that yeah.

Jay Franze (15:21):
I mean, and they're good.
That's interesting I was goingto mention to too.
Maybe that should be arecommendation one day.

Tiffany Mason (15:27):
Wasn't it also at State Coach that the one singer
brought up the other singer andthen the audience didn't know
who it was.

Jay Franze (15:35):
One singer brought up the other singer.

Tiffany Mason (15:39):
Benson Boone brought up.

Jay Franze (15:41):
Brought up the guitar player from the band
Queen yes, brian May.

Tiffany Mason (15:45):
So it surprises me.
I think they're doing some kindof far stretches for who
they're bringing on the stage.

Jay Franze (15:51):
I think these things happen in the moment.
I don't think they'renecessarily planned out, like
Brian May was probably there andthey said well, let's go ahead
and do this, and they throw ittogether at the last minute Got
it.
But I don't know.

Tiffany Mason (16:04):
Yeah, then Brian's.
Like I told you guys, theywouldn't know who I was.

Jay Franze (16:07):
Post Malone and Jelly Roll performed at
Coachella.
Yes, together.

Tiffany Mason (16:13):
But do they have anything recorded?

Jay Franze (16:17):
Girl, what do you want?
Everything.

Tiffany Mason (16:18):
Yeah, I'm a typical woman, of course.

Jay Franze (16:22):
They have a song out called Losers.
Oh, there's a bar in nashvillecalled losers where post malone
hangs out and performs withother people oh, okay, that
makes more sense there's a barin nashville called losers.
It's right next to the barcalled winners.

Tiffany Mason (16:40):
Winners and losers um, I'm thinking the toby
keith song.

Jay Franze (16:44):
You've got winners, you've got losers yep, yep,
that's it talking about the bar.
Do you know that?
The bar I'm saying he wastalking about those two bars,
but he wasn't oh sorry, I'msorry you don't have to be with
us on the show george there's atime yet, buddy all right, all

(17:04):
right, moving on.
Don't mean to interrupt yourflow.

Tiffany Mason (17:10):
Well, the next thing I was going to tell you
about and probably botch is EricChurch unveiling his 2025 Free
the Machine Tour, just for hisupcoming album Evangeline we got
to talk.
Slow to get it right.
Album Evangeline we got to talkslow to get it right.

Jay Franze (17:28):
Evangeline versus.

Tiffany Mason (17:30):

The tour spans 22 NorthAmerican cities from September
to November, with special guestsEllie King, marcus King Charles
, wesley, godwin on select dates.

Tiffany Mason (17:52):
What did I say, ellie King?

Jay Franze (17:53):
Ellie L.
She's the daughter of RobSnyder.

Tiffany Mason (17:58):
Oh okay, isn't it nice that when you go to Google
stuff, do you remember back inthe olden days we had to be so
specific.
You couldn't misspell anything.
You had to be so specific.
You couldn't just be like whois Elking's dad.
It would pull up a whole bunchof mismatches.
But now you can be super vagueon your stuff and it almost

(18:21):
always gives you the informationyou were looking for vague on
your stuff and it, like almostalways, gives you the
information you were looking for.
Yes, the woman on my phone today, a question and she said would
you like me to use chat?
Gpt honestly, oh, my goodness,we're going straight for that

(18:42):
now.
Wow, I get annoyed when I sayhey, woman in the phone text,
jay, franzy, and then she sayswhat app would you like to use?

Jay Franze (18:46):
yeah, that's new too .
I don't like that I don'teither like I said text, open up
my texting app if I wanted tosend a slack message or a
whatsapp message.

Tiffany Mason (18:59):
I mean, I don't know, I'm with you, not
impressed with that george geton the phone Call up.

Jay Franze (19:05):
Mark, have him fix that, please.
Actually, no wait, I'm sorry, that's Apple.
Not Mark Call up somebody fromApple, just get it taken care of
.

Tiffany Mason (19:17):
Yeah, Okay.
So do you want to talk aboutMorgan Wallen?
Or are you feeling like it'sold news?
We've talked about him a bit.
Is there anything interestingto talk about?
I mean, he's got a new numberone song, I'm.
The Problem it's on the radio.
It's actually his 17thchart-topping single.

Jay Franze (19:37):
I'll tell you what.
When he hits 40 weeks, we'lltalk about it Okay, sounds good.
Either that, Morgan, or you cancome on jfrenzycom slash live
and we'll talk to you then okay, last one.

Tiffany Mason (19:52):
In other news, billy ray cyrus, your bff, and
elizabeth hurley from austinpowers are rekindling their
relationship after meeting onthe set of a holiday movie in
2022.
The movie was called christmasin paradise.
Yeah, they went instagramofficial on april 20th have you

(20:13):

like his inaugurationperformance at this point, I

I'm surprised she doesn't wanta more manicured man all right
well we all have our standardsif either of you would like to

Tiffany Mason (20:49):

He's here, so much.

Tiffany Mason (21:09):
That sounds good.
Make him more of a permanentfixture.

Jay Franze (21:14):
George.
That's your new email address.
George at jfrenzycom.

Tiffany Mason (21:20):
We'll check it for you.
What are you saying to me?
Oh man, George is calling meout.
He's saying Tiffany will have amemorable fail.

Jay Franze (21:32):
He says yes, please.
I assume that means to youremail address.

Tiffany Mason (21:36):
All right, there you go I don't know, I might
restrict email access if he'sgoing to say and block his email
, I guess he said memorable,it's probably good, it's
probably positive.
Memorable has a positiveconnotation for me.

Jay Franze (21:48):
George is not negative.
We're usually the negativepeople.
Are we talking about thequestion of the day?

Tiffany Mason (21:57):
Yeah, refresh your memory.
What was it?

Jay Franze (22:00):
What is a cover song that is better than the
original?
Ooh.
What is a cover song that isbetter than the original, ooh.
What is a cover song that isbetter than the original?
All right, I'll go ahead andkick it off.
We mentioned Van Halen earlier.
I don't know if you're aware ofthis, but Van Halen was known

(22:20):
for throwing cover songs ontotheir albums to round off their
albums at the beginning of time.
One of the songs they did was asong called you Really Got Me
originally done by the Kinks.
So the Kinks did a great versionand Van Halen also did a great
version.
It's hard to say that one wasbetter than the other, but a

(22:42):
notable cover tune nonetheless.
Yep.

Tiffany Mason (22:46):
I like that one, I like both of them.
I would agree with thatcommentary.

Jay Franze (22:52):
We're giving commentary.
We're official.
We're still waiting on theWhite House to reach back out to
us and let us know if we'reallowed to.
We're official.
We're still waiting on theWhite House to reach back out to
us and let us know if we'reallowed to come in or not, but
if they watch this show.
They know we shouldn't be inthere, but I'm assuming they're
not watching, so therefore, Didyou actually hear that the first
podcaster got in?
Yes, yes, I heard that.

Tiffany Mason (23:11):
Yes, yes.

Jay Franze (23:12):
I'm anxious to see how that went.
Yeah, I don't.
Yes, anxious to see how thatwent.
Yeah, how long did that last.
But that's all right, we're onthe waiting list.

Tiffany Mason (23:19):
Probably a cool experience nonetheless, yeah.

Jay Franze (23:21):
I think we're number 632,000.

Tiffany Mason (23:24):
George, can you check on that?

Jay Franze (23:25):
Yeah, get on it.

Tiffany Mason (23:28):
Reach out to the.

Jay Franze (23:28):
White House.

Tiffany Mason (23:31):
All right, I would say live and let die.
Paul McCartney and the Wingsoriginally did it.
Eh, I would say Live and LetDie.
Paul McCartney and the Wingsoriginally did it.
Eh, it's okay, and it's justduring my growing up years.
So Guns N' Roses did it and Ithink that they did do it better
, because it was rock, you saidPaul McCartney.

Jay Franze (23:50):
Wasn't that a Beatles tune, george Martin?
That gives me an indicationthat it's probably the Beatles,
written by Paul McCartney andhis wife Linda McCartney ooh,
you might be right, produced byGeorge Martin.
Alright, how much did?

Tiffany Mason (24:12):
Paul McCartney get paid for Live and Let Die.
How much did he?

Jay Franze (24:14):
get paid for it?
$50,000.
That's it.
How much did Paul McCartney getpaid for Live and?

Tiffany Mason (24:17):
Let Die.
How much did he get paid for it?
$50,000.
That's it Trump changed now,but that was a lot of money back
in the day.

Jay Franze (24:23):
That's a lot of money.
Now.
I mean, we don't all live largelike you and have boats and
golf carts.
Oh God Stop.
I'm just throwing that out there.
Stop All right, I think it'swings.
I I'm just throwing that outthere.
Stop All right.
I think it's wings.
I think you're correct.
I am not wrong, but you areright, there you go.

(24:47):
All right, george, we're waitingon you.
Buddy, we need a cover song, cover song that you think is
better than the original.
In the meantime, george, I'mgoing to move on to amanda, who
says nothing compares to you, originally done by prince but
covered by schneid o'connor andyou know what I'll agree with it

(25:08):
.
I think prince is by far thebetter artist, but I think her
version of the song is better, for sure.

Tiffany Mason (25:16):
Um, I did not hear what you said.

Jay Franze (25:22):
Tiffany, you're fired.
George, I don't even need towait for you anymore.
Buddy, there you go, she's goneout.
Nothing compares to you, PrinceSinead O'Connor.
I like Prince better, butSinead O'Connor did a better job
on that song.

Tiffany Mason (25:39):
Yeah, I just missed the thing.

Jay Franze (25:42):
Just missed the conversation.

Tiffany Mason (25:44):
The title, no, the title.
I think that she did better too.
I think there's more emotion,which I'm a big fan of the
emotion, and she kind of goesairy in her falsetto and I like
that, okay, fair enough.

Jay Franze (25:54):
She kind of goes airy in her falsetto and I like
that.

Tiffany Mason (25:56):
Okay, fair enough .
And I'm not a big Prince fan.
I'm okay with Prince, but MrMason is a big Prince fan
because he's from Minneapolis.

Jay Franze (26:05):
Yeah, prince is just an amazing talent, was an
amazing talent?

Tiffany Mason (26:09):
If he, why why?

Jay Franze (26:11):
He played every instrument.
He wrote all those songs.
He's written hit songs for awhole ton of other artists, even
the song.
What was it?
Manic Monday he wrote that songand just gave it as a gift.
Oh wow, he saw her, whateverband that was, I forget now
Bengals yes, thank you.
And he just gave her the song.
He didn't know her.
He just said, hey, I wrote thisthe song, I think you'd be good

(26:45):
at it, and just handed to herand then left.

Tiffany Mason (26:46):
Oh wow, they recorded it and huge hit her,
their biggest hit.
So yes, prince is absolutelyamazing talent.
Wait, didn't they also sing?

Jay Franze (26:49):
uh, walk like an egyptian.
Yes, ma'am, you're right, it'sclose, I'll go with you.
I don't like you anymore.
George says oh, the Beach Boysand Laurie Morgan.
Don't worry baby, Don't worrybaby.

(27:10):
Fair enough, 1996.
He even adds a date.
George is good at this stuff.

Tiffany Mason (27:16):
He looked it up, he went on the Googal as well.
Is that what he?

Jay Franze (27:19):
did Alright fine.
Ethan Ethan buddy, black MagicWoman, originally by Fleetwood
Mac, Made popular by Santana.

Tiffany Mason (27:29):
I know the Fleetwood Mac version and we
know I like Fleetwood Mac, so Iwent to see Fleetwood Mac I got
passes.

Jay Franze (27:36):
Went to see hima wood mac I got passes.
Went to see him.
I didn't.

Tiffany Mason (27:37):
Just nothing, nothing at all for me I would
guess it's more of a performancethan like they're just standing
singing, like it's not likeyeah crowd involvement or, like
you know, on american idolthey're always like own the
stage.
You know you have to fill upthe whole stage.
I would guess they don't fillup the whole stage no I mean, I

(27:58):
could see that santana madeanother amazing artist I love me
some santana been around sincethe 70s?

Jay Franze (28:06):
do you know who the original guitar player for
santana was, even thoughsantana's a guitar player, but
it was neil shawn, the guitarplayer for Journey.
So he was the original guitarplayer for Santana at the age of
any guesses 22.
Oh, so close, but not close atall.

(28:27):
15.
So and then, greg Raleigh wasthe keyboard player for Santana
at the time, and both Greg andNeil Sean left the band to form
their own band that they calledJourney.

(28:47):
Because they had the samemanager, santana, and then
Journey went on with the samemanager and formed Journey and
they needed a singer.
Greg Rawley was the singer upuntil they found Steve Perry.
Oh, wow.
There you go, a little bit ofSantana and.
Journey history.

Tiffany Mason (29:06):
Well, I just wrote down Santana into the
night because I really love thatsong by them and I have not
thought of Santana for a longtime, so I'm going to fire it up
.

Jay Franze (29:15):
See, we need to thank Ethan for that.
Thank you, ethan.

Tiffany Mason (29:19):
Thank you, Ethan.

Jay Franze (29:20):
Greg agrees with you Live and let die Paul McCartney
and wings.
Okay, fine.
Paul.
McCartney and wings, and I dobelieve Guns N' Roses version.
I like that better, jessica, aslong as we're talking about
Guns N' Roses says knocking onheaven's door, originally done
by Bob Dylan, covered by Guns N'.

Tiffany Mason (29:40):
Roses, now I'm going to share something that is
going to just.
You might fall off your stool, okay, you're just going to dunk
right off, but I am sad to say Idon't really know a lot of Bob
Dylan stuff.
I guess that's something I needto like pull up and listen to.
No, oh, I feel like everybodysays he's so amazing.

Jay Franze (30:02):
I think he's overrated.

Tiffany Mason (30:04):
Yeah, okay.

Jay Franze (30:05):
That's just my opinion.

Tiffany Mason (30:07):
Then I guess you won't fall off your stool.
No injuries tonight, that'sgood.

Jay Franze (30:10):
No, it's all right for you not to know him.
Okay, while I'm thinking aboutit too, I don't want to miss the
opportunity to just mentionreal quick that high mountain
breezes have got yet anothernumber one hit overseas oh, what
is it?

Tiffany Mason (30:27):
drift away, drift away goes number one again
that's what happens when you geta bunch of talented people
together and then form a bandand put awesome music out.

Jay Franze (30:40):
There you go.
Ben agrees with me, with youReally Got Me.
I think Kingston Van.
Halen.
Lucy.
Better not be my Lucy, lucy, you better be sleeping.
Your mommy will be mad at me.
Lucy's only 10, still inelementary school.
Lucy says I'm a believer.
Originally done by Neil Diamondbut made popular by the Monkees

(31:05):
.

Tiffany Mason (31:06):
I would love to hear the Neil Diamond version of
that, because the Monkeesversion is upbeat right, and so
I don't feel like Neilildiamond's like, yeah, you really
got me now not even the samesong, but you're fired goodbye.
I was thinking I'm a believer,I'm a believer there you go no,

(31:32):
I do know the song for somereason.
Reason I put them together.
It was a mashup, I was doing acollab.

Jay Franze (31:37):
Is that what it?

Tiffany Mason (31:37):
was.

Jay Franze (31:39):
Oh, mashup and a collab, I like it.
There you go.
You're just all over the placetonight.
It's a new style.
Oh folks, if you come to us foraccuracy.

Tiffany Mason (31:51):
Oh, my God, oh the monkeys Originally
engineered by no.
Jay Franci, okay, no, I wouldhave been what three ten?

Jay Franze (32:05):
maybe it was engineered by Bob Bullock.

Tiffany Mason (32:09):
Oh, very cool.

Jay Franze (32:11):
Again, he didn't have me on that one.
Thanks, Bob.

Tiffany Mason (32:13):
Rude, I know he wasn't hiring three-year-olds.

Jay Franze (32:18):
I don't know.
I had to be old enough.
I've watched the monkeys on TV.
Tyler, Sounds of Silence.
There you go by far I thinkthat's the winner for the night.
Simon and Garfunkel covered byDisturbed Dear.
God no better version thanDisturbed.

Tiffany Mason (32:34):
I agree 100% and I agree that that might be the
one of the night.

Jay Franze (32:39):
Yeah.
Yeah that's a good one.
I didn't think about it.
But Beat it by Michael Jackson, covered by Dave Cook.
Dave Cook from American Idol,to me by far a better version

(32:59):
than Michael Jackson.

Tiffany Mason (33:02):
I'm going to write it down.
I'm going to go watch it.

Jay Franze (33:04):
Dave Cook, Beat it.
And if you want to take that astep further, Eddie Van Halen
played guitar for MichaelJackson on the song.
Beat it.

Tiffany Mason (33:14):
Really, really.

Jay Franze (33:17):
So when you go back, and listen to Michael Jackson's
version of Beat it.
Pay attention to the guitar.
I mean, it was a big deal.
Wow, you can go and research.
There is a story there.

Tiffany Mason (33:26):
Interesting, I just might.

Jay Franze (33:29):
Victoria chimes in yes, billie Jean by Michael
Jackson, but covered by theCivil Wars.
I don't know that version, butthank you for pointing it out.
Now I have homework.

Tiffany Mason (33:43):
Usually it's just me, I didn't know.
Co-hosting this show came withhomework, homework.

Jay Franze (33:52):
Oh, I didn't know I was going to have homework, but
guess what I do?
Hannah's chiming in.
I don't know if this is yourdaughter homework but guess what
I do?
Hannah's chiming in.
I don't know if this is yourdaughter.
I'm assuming not.
But she says Higher.
Ground by Stevie Wonder coveredby the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Tiffany Mason (34:07):
I cannot comment because I don't know either, but
my guess is the Red Hot ChiliPeppers is better, because I
don't know, I probably like RedHot Chili Peppers better than
Stevie Wonder.
He's okay.
He's so talented I know, butit's not like if I'm going to
pull up music to just listen toand chill out.

Jay Franze (34:27):
He's talented, I mean it wouldn't be the first
thing I would reach for, buthe's super talented.
Agreed.
Travis buddy, I think I agreewith you on this one.
He says La Bamba, originally byRichie Valens covered by Los.

Tiffany Mason (34:43):
Lobos Agreed.

Jay Franze (34:46):
Good movie too.

Tiffany Mason (34:48):
Very good movie.
Every time that movie's on Ilike to watch it, but it hasn't
been on very much anymore.

Jay Franze (34:55):
It used to be on a lot.
All right, let's get throughsome of these so we can move on
with life.
Sean says a little help from myfriends.
Originally by the Beatles, covered by Joe Cocker.
You cannot miss with a JoeCocker song.

Tiffany Mason (35:07):
I agree, I will not argue with you.

Jay Franze (35:11):
Camille, camille, or Camillia, camilla, camilla.

Tiffany Mason (35:15):
Not Camillia Camilla, camilla, not Camillia
Camilla.

Jay Franze (35:18):
Camilla, sorry, we know we're not good with names.
She says Time After.
Time, originally by CindyLauper and she says by Iron and
Wine.
I do not know that version, butI will tell you Time After Time
is one of my favorite songs andit's been covered by so many

(35:39):
different bands and I love it inmovies.
I love it when rock bands do itoh yeah, when rock bands cover
that song, I think it's reallygood maybe iron and wine is a
rock band maybe I don't knowMore homework.
You go to the next one.

Tiffany Mason (35:57):
I'll look it up.

Jay Franze (35:57):
More homework.
Oh I love it and we might havethe chance to go see Cyndi
Lauper coming up, coming here.
In what month is she cominghere?

Tiffany Mason (36:09):
July.

Jay Franze (36:10):
Is it July?
Rocky Rose, rocky.
Rose.
Thank you for that.
Rocky Rose rose, I appreciateit.
Rocky rose is out with cindylopper right now.
They are overseas.
She is the keyboard player andI always say it, I will say it
again she is by far one tofollow on instagram.
Her instagram is just so goodkeeping you really entertained

(36:31):
yes, she's just always gotpictures from the road and
different shots of her on stage, the band on stage, but she
always has the backstage stuffgoing on where she's going
around Japan.

Tiffany Mason (36:42):
They're just like cool shots too.

Jay Franze (36:43):
Yeah, very good.

Tiffany Mason (36:45):
Yeah.

Jay Franze (36:46):
All right, faith says.
I drove all night by RoyOrbison.
Orbison, I got to talk slower, covered by Cindy Lauper.
There you go.

Tiffany Mason (36:56):
Maybe we'll hear it.

Jay Franze (36:57):
You say it three times and here she appears,
Cindy Lauper.
Cindy Lauper.
Cindy Lauper jfrenzycom slashlive.
Alex says my way I did it my wayOkay now it's by Claude.
Francis.
I'm just going to say Francis, claude, francis.

(37:19):
But covered by Frank Sinatra.
I did not realize that that wasa cover.

Tiffany Mason (37:24):
I did not either.
Alexa is very wise.

Jay Franze (37:28):
I'm just blowing through our list.
Oh, cannot skip this one.
Penelope says Fast Car by TracyChapman, Covered by Luke Combs.

Tiffany Mason (37:39):
So good.

Jay Franze (37:40):
I think the Tracy Chapman version is better.

Tiffany Mason (37:42):
Yes, me too agreed.

Jay Franze (37:45):
It's a great song.

Tiffany Mason (37:45):
I was hooked on this song, I don't know 3 or 4
years ago, and I kept playing iton the golf cart and Hannah
kept getting so mad at me.
She's like this song sucks.
And then it came out on theradio and I was like like, yes,
we get to listen to it all thetime now, hannah that's a great
song.

Jay Franze (38:02):
It really is a great song and tracy chapman's an
amazing artist.
She was discovered in boston atharvard square.
She was just in there playingan acoustic guitar in harvard
square.
She got discovered.
Yes, that's very nice.
Look at you.
You can stay for another fiveminutes, george.
Hold off on that firing.

Tiffany Mason (38:20):
You mean it?

Jay Franze (38:22):
But she was discovered in Boston and she
recorded at the studio that Iworked at.
I did not get to record her,but she did record there.

Tiffany Mason (38:30):
ESS.

Jay Franze (38:31):
Productions in Boston.
Dang.
No longer there.

Tiffany Mason (38:37):
That's right, womp, womp, but don't you know,
you're still standing, betterthan you ever did All right and
finally, gianna Wicked Games byChris Isaac covered by Stone
Sour.
I don't know Stone Sour, butdamn, Chris Isaac did a good job

(38:59):
with that song.

Jay Franze (39:00):
Stone Sour rock band .
So I have not heard theirversion, but I will definitely
go listen to it now.
More homework, I'm sorry, onemore.
I know I said that was the lastone, but one more.
Billie Jean again.
Brooklyn says Billie Jean, originally by Michael Jackson
but covered by Chris Cornell.
The reason I'm going to go withit is because there was a
controversy when Dave Cook sangthe song.

(39:22):
He got all this praise forbeing so original and singing it
on American Idol and it wasjust an amazing cover version of
the song.
And then people said, well, cornell did the same version
before him, so he just copiedchris cornell.
I don't know if he did or not, they're similar, yes, but you

(39:42):
know, if you're gonna go by that, chris cornell did release it
first okay.

Tiffany Mason (39:47):
Well, since you got one more, I get one more.
So I like that.
Sarah said I will always loveyou, originally by Dolly Parton,
but then covered by WhitneyHouston.

Jay Franze (40:01):
Yeah, I will say Whitney Houston did a bang-up
job on that song.
She really did.
She's just not my favorite.
No, she used to be.
I'm used to buy her albums andstuff.
I really liked her at thebeginning, but she went off the
rails at the end and I justagain now that she went off the
rails.
I just can't get that out of mymind.
Yeah, all right.

Tiffany Mason (40:22):
Too bad for you.
Still sounds good to me, allright.
Well, speaking of New York City, I think Jay Leno no no, no, no
.

Jay Franze (40:35):
Where is he?
He's from Boston.
He lives in Los Angeles.

Tiffany Mason (40:39):
Oh yeah, all right.
Well, he's briefly took overthe Tonight Show monologue
delivering sexual harassmentthemed humor that sparked mixed
reactions.
Hmm, in this day and age youcan be too careful, and he

(41:02):
probably should have been morecareful, although if it's on the
Tonight Show, it's probablyscripted, but nonetheless.

Jay Franze (41:08):
Jay Leno is the cleanest comedian to ever live.
I cannot imagine that he hasdone anything too far off the
path.
To give you a little bit ofbackground on Mr Leno he has got
in in feuds with people overhis late night talk show and

(41:28):
stuff.
Okay.
And he always takes the higherground.
When he was supposed to takeover for Johnny Carson and I
mean he filled in he subbed forJohnny all the time, he was the
next person in line and thenthey gave it to Conan O'Brien,
he let it go.
He didn't fight over it, hedidn't want to dispute over it.
He took the higher groundbecause I mean, he's friends

(41:49):
with Conan O'Brien too, both ofthem from Boston, and I mean he
was fine with it.
However, jimmy Kimmel not myfavorite he went on Jay Leno's
show and actually took jabs athim over the feud with Conan.
So he took jabs at him.

Tiffany Mason (42:08):
That kind of didn't even occur.

Jay Franze (42:11):
On his show.
He was a guest on Leno's showand took jabs at him.
He was a guest on Leno's showand took jabs at him and while
Jay didn't appreciate it, hedidn't really consider Jimmy
Kimmel much of a friend afterthat, but he still let the jabs
air and he was told we'll cutthem all out and Leno said no no

(42:32):
, go ahead and keep them in, andI mean he's always taken the
higher ground.

Tiffany Mason (42:37):
Wow.

Jay Franze (42:37):
I mean he let Kimmel rip him apart on his own show
just because he didn't want tobe the guy to edit it out.
So I have nothing but respectfor him.
If you want to take thatrespect one step further.

Tiffany Mason (42:49):
I do want to Please how One step further, his
wife.

Jay Franze (42:52):
They've been together forever.
I don't know how many years say40, 50 years, whatever.
It's been long, long timerelationship from back in boston
and he's never left her side Imean boston he truly, truly is
connected with his wife well, his wife is very sick and she's
needs constant care, and he isdecided to be the person to give

(43:15):
her that care.
He will not put her in a home, won't do anything.
Wow and he's staying by herside until the end, he said.

Tiffany Mason (43:21):
That's admirable.

Jay Franze (43:22):
He is a stand-up guy .
I don't care what anybody says.
Nice guy.

Tiffany Mason (43:26):
Wow, there you go .
That's interesting to learn.
It's interesting too to bearound all of the I don't know
sin, I don't know sin, I don'tknow, all the debauchery in la
and not you know, let it seep inhe never partaked in any of it.

Jay Franze (43:42):
He doesn't drink, doesn't smoke you know he
doesn't do drugs at all.
I mean he's.
He's a very clean comedian.
I mean very clean.
That's why I don't think he'sever said anything too far off
the path.
And I went to see him hereperform at the Hard Rock Casino
just last year.
He was with Arsenio Hall andthe other late night talk show

(44:05):
hosts I think there was likefour of them, it was it was okay
, it was very clean.
It was like watching theirmonologues, one after another
after another.
His YouTube channel he does JayLeno's Garage, where he talks
about all his cars.
I like that too.

Tiffany Mason (44:22):
I watch that all the time Did your daughter watch
it with you?

Jay Franze (44:25):
Yes, as a matter of fact, both Bella and Lucy, I
think, watched it at some point, but Bella's watched it with me,
and Bella and I actually wentto a car show in Cincinnati
where one of the cars that wasfeatured on a show was appearing
.
And we got to see the car andtalk to the guy who owned it and
got to hear the whole behindthe scenes story.
It was pretty cool and I didn'tknow if my daughter would like

(44:47):
something like that.
but she did like it and shecollects cars now like matchbox
cars and that type of stuff ascollectibles.

Tiffany Mason (44:56):
she's going to be the 40 year old virgin that has
them all displayed around herhouse in the box still, yeah
she's got a few collectiblethings that she refuses to take
out of the box.

Jay Franze (45:06):
I don't know.
I mean, I get it and I don'tthink she does it as
collectibles.

Tiffany Mason (45:08):
I think she just wants to use the stuff as
decorations well, my husbandused to work at toys r us and
when I met him, so we met, wehad a very short courtship and
then he was getting relocatedand asked me if I would move
with him and I was like, yeah, Icould do that.
So we're, we're at the new digs, right, we're unpacking all of

(45:31):
our boxes, and he pulls out abarbie and I was like, what are
you doing with a barbie?
But because he worked at toys rus, he learned that the holiday
barbie was collectible and sohe bought one and then he kept
it forever and literally we didopen it and give it to hannah

(45:54):
and there goes all the value ofthat thing.

Jay Franze (45:55):
And literally, we did open it and give it to
Hannah, and there goes all thevalue of that thing.

Tiffany Mason (46:02):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah.
Some broken limbs, some haircutyou know it's fine.

Jay Franze (46:09):
George said he had a chance to see Jay Leno.

Tiffany Mason (46:14):
He said that he was a very kind person.
Story checks out.
Jay wasn't lying.
I got a fact to check you Allright?
Well, Pete Davidson, if youdon't know who this is, if it
helps you listeners, he did dateKim Kardashian for a small
amount of time.

Jay Franze (46:33):
Is that the connection?

Tiffany Mason (46:36):
Is this how we're going to know who he is?
That's the connection.
That's how people are gonnaremember.
Oh, that's who p davidson is.
He is on saturday night life, but he said that he is returning
to stand up after a concerninginstagram post performing
material about lewis ck andariana.
Now, you had something youwanted to say about this.

Jay Franze (46:57):
Louis, that's what I said.

Tiffany Mason (46:58):
That's what I said, louis CK.

Jay Franze (47:00):
Yeah, yeah, that's what I said.

Tiffany Mason (47:01):
You just didn't hear me.

Jay Franze (47:04):
Louis CK probably was my favorite comedian,
probably still up there.
His style of humor and hisstyle of stand-up is the style
that I liked and similar to thetype of stuff that I would do.
I like story type stuff, notjust your typical knock-knock
jokes or whatever.
I like going up and telling astory.

Tiffany Mason (47:26):
I think one of these times you need to share
some of your material.
Listeners.
I want you guys to weigh in.
Do we want to hear some ofJay's stand-up material?

Jay Franze (47:35):
Because I think we do we had a short little drop
out there um all right, let's goahead and pick up and move on,
I guess okay, okay I don't knowthis pete davidson.
He seems like a nice enough guy, but he's had some issues.
George is chiming in, yes, andhe's got some issues.

(47:56):
George is chiming in, yes, andhe's got some excited marks next
to it.
I say excited Because he reallywants to hear it my daughter
Lucy calls them excited marks.
Cute.
Anyhow.
Yeah, pete Davidson, he's afunny dude.
He's funny on the show, thattype of stuff, but he's got some
mental issues.
He's been suicidal in the pastand stuff.

(48:16):
And right before one of theepisodes of Saturday Night Live,
after this whole Ariana Grandething went down, there was a
song or something released andhe read it right before he went
on stage and he just had thehardest time getting through the
performance that night he hadpeople in for the show and

(48:37):
everything, and that's how hefinds out about it that night.
It had to be pretty rough on theguy, yeah, but he took some pot
shots at both Grande and CK,and CK has done some stuff in
the past.
He's not a he's not without sinby any stretch.
He's had some serious issues inthe past.
He's not a he's not without sinby any stretch.

(48:57):
He's had some serious issues inthe past that have caused him
to to be canceled for a periodof time.
But he came back and, um, we'll, let that be all on its own.
Want to know more about that.
Just search up Louis CK incontroversy.

(49:17):
I'm sure you'll find all theinformation you need.
I'm sure you can pull somethingout anyway.

Tiffany Mason (49:26):
Well, and it's like I said earlier, you don't
have to be very specific, it'llfind the stuff for you.

Jay Franze (49:30):
There you go.
But yeah, he made some potshots at him over some of CK's
new material.

Tiffany Mason (49:37):
Well, I don't know if it's Ruffin or Ruffin.
Amber Ruffin, the host of theAmber Ruffin show on Peacock,
recently pulled from the WhiteHouse Correspondents Dinner.
So she was supposed to perform, but she got caught being
colorful with her languageearlier, or reckless with her

(49:58):
language earlier in the week, and so they said you know what
we don't want you to?
You're basically uninvited tothe White House Correspondents
Dinner, and initially she waslike okay, you know, I was
saying some things that wereprobably not appropriate.
And then, you know, everybodystarted chiming in and saying
and then, you know, everybodystarted chiming in and saying,
no, they're taking your, yourfree speech away from you.

(50:20):
And then she was like wait, yeah, yeah, they did take my
free speech away from me.
So then she proceeded.
When she was hosting Late Nightwith Seth Meyers, which she
does, she decided to throw someadditional colorful language out
about her getting cancelled onthat performance.
So sounds like everybody isusing SNL to air their dirty

(50:47):
laundry.

Jay Franze (50:48):
That's not SNL.

Tiffany Mason (50:52):
No, yes, it is Late Night with Seth Meyers.
That's one of the segments.
What?

Jay Franze (50:56):
am I thinking of?
It's a talk show.

Tiffany Mason (50:58):
Okay what am I thinking of?

Jay Franze (50:59):
Jay Leno and all of those.

Tiffany Mason (51:02):
What is the segment on Saturday Night Live
when they do the news A?

Jay Franze (51:05):
weekend update.

Tiffany Mason (51:06):
I thought it was weekend update.
There we go.
Okay, that's what I wasthinking of.
And Seth Meyers, I don't thinkeven is on Saturday Night Live
anymore.

Jay Franze (51:12):
I'll tell you what?
No, because you know why?
Because he's got his own talkright anyways.
Yeah, I mean, I'm all for freespeech.
Don't get me wrong by anystretch, but don't get this
wrong either.

Tiffany Mason (51:26):
Free speech, it does not come without
consequence right so yeah, andthey didn't take it away from
her.
They didn't say she couldn'tsay the things she said.

Jay Franze (51:33):
She just doesn't get to go to the white house now
all right there you go, youcanceled yourself.

Tiffany Mason (51:40):
I guess that happens.
All right, there you go, youcanceled yourself.

Jay Franze (51:44):
I guess that happens .
So the recommendation that Ibrought up last week was from a
band called Circe and the songis called Like a Drum.
I mentioned it because theywere always one of my favorite
bands.
I knew them for years.
Now I've seen them perform, Iwould say, since 1999-ish,
that's crazy.
Somewhere in that ballpark.
No, you know what Before that.

(52:10):
Wow, it's been a long time, butI lived in New York when I had
the studio and all that stuffand I would go out and see bands
play and I saw this band calledCirce.
I really, really liked them.
I saw them when they firstformed.
I mean literally at the very, very beginning, they were still
performing.

Tiffany Mason (52:21):
When they had five.

Jay Franze (52:22):
Well, I saw that too .
But they were performing withanother band and then they left
and formed a band of their owncalled Circe, when they were
five members.
We mentioned they had troublekeeping other members.
They had trouble keeping guitarplayers and drummers.
She was the singer, melanie thesinger, and her husband, rich,
is the bass player and they'vedecided to form a duo and do it

(52:45):
all themselves.
So we've mentioned in the pastI'll mention it really briefly
that she plays the drums, sheplays bass on trigger pads, she
plays the flute I mean justcrazy stuff and he plays guitar
now and he plays bass as welland he also plays bass pedals
with his feet.
So it sounds like a full blownband when they perform together.
And that's how he sold it to mewhen he first did it.

(53:06):
So I went out and I checkedthem out and it did, and they
are awesome.
Now they're touring the country.
They play shows every night ofthe week.
They're just absolutely amazing.
So I brought that up to you.
I suggested that you go seethem perform.
You had a chance to do that.
You even did an episode of iton your show, yep, and since

(53:34):
then I'm just mentioning thesong like a drum because it was
the theme song of the show atthe very beginning of time.
They allowed me to use it andYouTube decided that was not
going to work for them, so westopped using it.
However, not because of Circe.
We stopped using it because ofthe fight with YouTube.
Let's hear your thoughts on itand we can talk a little bit
more in detail.

Tiffany Mason (53:54):
I did like the song.
I like Circe in general, I likeMelanie and her hubby and I
really liked that at thebeginning they have like the
clapping.
So I can imagine in a livesetting I know I was there in
life but a little bit differentthan a concert setting.
It was more of like, you know,a patio, you know evening dinner

(54:17):
music being played, but in aconcert setting I would feel
like the entire audience wouldstart clapping just because you
just want to, you want to be apart of that music the minute it
starts.
So I really liked that.
And then it was easy to singalong with because she repeats
you know some of the lyricswhich is common, but it's like

(54:40):
you know some of the lyricswhich is common, but it's, like
you know, be my problems like adrum and it just, I don't know,
it sticks with you, it rolls offthe tongue easy.
So it's fun to sing along.
And then I think we talkedbefore when a song ends and it
sounds like they've ripped thecord out of the electric guitar,
yeah, or the plug out orwhatever, and I like this is
another ending, another kind ofclassic ending that I like,

(55:01):
where the drum kind of liketrails off by itself and that's
the last thing that you hear.
So similar, odd ending orunique ending or whatever I'm
trying to say, but I reallyliked it.
I liked it a lot.

Jay Franze (55:14):
Now, in addition to them performing and doing
everything on their own, richalso engineers their, their
music, so he records everythingon their own.
Rich also engineers their, their music, so he records it
all on their own.
He mixes it, he does the wholething, he puts the whole thing
together.
Now.
I would have liked to haveworked on their projects in the
past, but he does it all himselfand he does a good job, so he
doesn't necessarily need anyassistance.

(55:36):
So, and I'm sure that way theydo whatever they want whenever
they want and however they want.
So, and I'm sure that way theydo whatever they want whenever
they want and however they want.
So sometimes it's a good thing.
Sometimes, you know not, theyare able to do it as a good
thing because they get the soundthat they're looking for.
A lot of people think that theycan do all the different parts,
but they can't quite meet themark.

(55:57):
So, they still need aspecialist to be able to tweak
the buttons and do things to getto what they are truly looking
for.

Tiffany Mason (56:06):
So let's say that I think I can do it all right
and I start putting my music outon Instagram or YouTube or
TikTok and I don't really knowwho grabs me.
Is it a PR firm?
Is that what basically happens?
And they say, hey, we like yourmusic, we want to work with you
, and then the PR firm sets themup with like a audio engineer

(56:32):
or something, and that's how itgets more like on point or what
is the process.

Jay Franze (56:36):
Because PR firms, not the person.
The PR firm promotes your stuffonce it's complete.
Where a development company istypically what you're you're
thinking of.
Where as a artist developmentperson, if you see somebody
who's got raw talent and youwant to go ahead and put some
energy into that person anddevelop their talent, into that

(56:59):
person and develop their talent, and usually you're doing that
in hopes that when they make itbig, that you get a piece of the
pie Right.
Or you charge them a fee upfront for doing it either way,
but you're developing thembecause you know more than they
do and you're able to polishtheir music and get them to a
point that they probably wouldnot be able to do on their own.
And that could be whether ornot they need a co-writer that
could be polishing, or not theyneed a co-writer that could be

(57:20):
putting you know, polishingtheir songs yourself.
You can help them write theirsongs, then you can help produce
them or find a producer forthem.
You can take them into a studioand get the right engineer to
mix or master the stuff for themand you're just basically
developing them, getting themfrom point a to point z just one
step at a time, and then youhopefully get them a record deal
which would give them that bigpayout, and then they go on the

(57:44):
road and you get paid out andwhether or not you produce them
or help them in the future, youknow that's usually where you
part ways with them.
However, a record label a and rrep would go out and try to
discover talent and then developthem to an extent and then put
their music out and hopefullysell some records.

Tiffany Mason (58:03):
And I feel like I've heard what it stands for
six million times.
But A&R stands for.

Jay Franze (58:09):
Artist and Repertoire.

Tiffany Mason (58:12):
Oh, definitely not what I was thinking.
Okay, I'm glad I asked.
Okay, so there's that, okay.

Jay Franze (58:18):
Now, if you wanted to be technical, I'm sure
there's some things thatengineers or producers may have
done differently, but I thinkoverall, from the artist's point
of view and the artist puttingthe records together, they sound
really good.

Tiffany Mason (58:33):
Isn't that true for every song, though?
I mean depending on who theengineer is and the producer
it's got to have a differentsound anyway, for sure, yeah,
everybody does somethingdifferent.
For sure yeah, yeah.

Jay Franze (58:42):
Everybody does something different.
We talked about our potentialgrading system, the way we look
at songs, and it's how well thesong was written, how well it's
performed, and then theproduction that goes into the
song.
So I think, if we were to ratethis particular song or discuss
those particular points, I thinkthe song is fairly well written

(59:03):
.
It's a song about beating yourdemons In her case she beat
cancer.
So, melanie, if I'm misspeakingplease correct me, but she beat
cancer and that was myunderstanding of the story
behind that song is she'sbeating it like a drum.

Tiffany Mason (59:24):
Ah, I like that.

Jay Franze (59:25):
As far as the writing of the song, I think it
was very good.
The performance of the song isspot on.
I think that's where they shinethe most is in the performance
of their material.
Mm-hmm.
And then their production.
I would say is is.
I think it's very good.
So if there was anywhere intheir, their chain, that they

(59:46):
could improve on, I would say itwould be the production itself
fair enough but overall spot onyeah awesome well, are you ready
for a recommendation from me?

(01:00:07):
I am, but before you do, George, chime in and let us know if you
have any thoughts on the songor anybody else listening
Anybody else but George gothomework.
He was supposed to go listen toit.
Okay fair enough.
We have to hold him accountable.
I have a button for him.
Don't make me press it, george.
Getting it ready just in case.
But yes, if anybody wants tochime in on the song, please let
us know your thoughts for sure, all right okay, well, in

(01:00:32):
listening to the radio georgesays he's fired.
George, you're fired.

Tiffany Mason (01:00:43):
I?
How did I find this song?
I think I played one song, which you know, apple Music does
, like Spotify now, where it'lljust like keep suggesting it'll
start playing new songs that aresimilar to the one that you
requested.
And this one came on, and it isGod and Guns and Roses by Tyler
Braden, god god and guns androses god and guns and roses I

(01:01:08):
have heard of it oh you have, itwas pretty good.
it kind of has a feel to thesong that was uh, recovered, or
what am I trying to say?
That was just covered, sorry,by Jodi Messina, the Heads,
carolina Tails, california Kindof has that, where they're

(01:01:30):
taking one song and they'reusing the words of that song in
the new song.

Jay Franze (01:01:34):
Yes, you cannot mention Jodi Messina without
saying another person fromBoston.

Tiffany Mason (01:01:43):
Oh, and a redhead .

Jay Franze (01:01:45):
And a redhead, yes.

Tiffany Mason (01:01:46):
I think all redheads come from Boston.
I'm convinced of it.
Now, is that what it is?
What?

Jay Franze (01:01:51):
other redheads come from Boston.

Tiffany Mason (01:01:53):
Conan O'Brien.

Jay Franze (01:01:54):
That's a true statement.

Tiffany Mason (01:01:56):
There was one more.

Jay Franze (01:01:57):
Well, there's plenty of them, but just trying to
think of anything.

Tiffany Mason (01:02:01):
There was one more that you pointed out to me.

Jay Franze (01:02:03):
Bill Burr.

Tiffany Mason (01:02:05):
Yes, that's who we were talking about.

Jay Franze (01:02:07):
Brother of Billy Corgan.
Oh yes, that went over reallywell, by the way, smashing
pumpkins, that was on HowieMandel's podcast.

Tiffany Mason (01:02:21):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Jay Franze (01:02:22):
Howie does stuff, I remember you talking about it?

Tiffany Mason (01:02:24):
Yeah.

Jay Franze (01:02:25):
That was a very, very uncomfortable moment.

Tiffany Mason (01:02:30):
I remember you talking about it, but I couldn't
.
That was the other redhead thatwe talked about.

Jay Franze (01:02:33):
Yeah, yeah, fair enough.

Tiffany Mason (01:02:37):
Okay, so go check it out.
You're going to like it, so getused to liking all my song
recommendations.
That's not what it is.
It's okay if you put it onrepeat.

Jay Franze (01:02:47):
Is that what it is?
Put it on repeat.

Tiffany Mason (01:02:49):
I'll do it, you're probably going to call me
and thank me for how good it is.
Okay.

Jay Franze (01:02:55):
George, you heard it , buddy.
She might get fired before theshow even starts next week.
Buddy, she might get firedbefore the show even starts next
week.

Tiffany Mason (01:03:04):
Well, I am very, very, very proud.
This is maybe, like.
I'm not sure if any of my kidshave ever made me more proud
than this.
So Preston is graduating.
That's going to make the othersfeel really good.
It's okay because once I givethe explanation, they'll be fine
with it, because he isgraduating.
That's going to make the othersfeel really good.
It's okay because once I givethe explanation, they'll be fine
with it because he isgraduating from college with a

(01:03:28):
kinesiology major, he has beenon the dean's list for the last
kinesiology.
It's like how the cells reactto muscles and bones and how the
whole body moves, and a lot ofphysics calculus so he's wicked
smart he's wicked smart.
He could, technically, he couldbe a physical therapist, but he

(01:03:51):
doesn't really want to be.
He wants to be like in thehospitals or he wants to be more
clinical.
He doesn't really want to belike stretching people and doing
physical therapy actually, butwhat he has realized boats, golf
carts and doctors, that's allright, oh my gosh so someone
lives a charmed life no, so um,but I did not go to.

(01:04:19):
My husband has a two-yearassociate's degree.
My mom did not graduate highschool.
She did go back and get her GED.
My dad, I think, did finishhigh school, so this is like a
huge, huge deal that we have acollege graduate.
Nice yeah, and he's been on thedean list for three years.

(01:04:39):
Preston congratulations, congratulations I mean it is
like so amazing, I'm so excitedand I feel absolutely terrible
that this like amazing, monumentous thing is going to
happen.
But honestly, he goes to bedvery early because he works very
early in the morning and he isdoing he's a phlebotomist right
now and he actually they aregoing to what?

(01:05:03):
that's awesome yeah, it isreally cool and he actually
found out through his work.
They will pay for him to goback for one more year of school
and he will be a nurse.
So he wants to maybe be atraveling nurse, which would
allow him to be hands-on anddoing all the things.
And this kid ever since he waslittle I always said he was like

(01:05:24):
macgyver and ranger rick, tworolled into one because he loves
like the outdoors and beinglike you know, pocket knife and
skin and stuff, and hunting andfishing.
He loves all that stuff.
But he also does love like gutsand all that stuff too.
So like blood does not botherhim, obviously if he's doing a
phlebotomy.

(01:05:45):
But, um, he really wants to belike hands-on with patients and,
like you know, helping them.
And I don't know drawing bloodor I don't really know.
I don't know what he wants todo, but he just wants to be more
hands-on with patients.
So he's very excited about thatopportunity and he's even more
excited that his school or hiswork will pay for it.

(01:06:06):
So I'm glad he's finally usinga few things to his benefit.
He has wisened up.
His frontal cortex must begetting close to being
completely formed because healso thinks that we know stuff
now.
So very exciting.

Jay Franze (01:06:24):
When you say we, you mean me and you right, I met my
husband and I.
I would say we've proven tonightwe don't know much.

Tiffany Mason (01:06:31):
No, no, sean does , sean knows a lot Showing off
again.
Man and then little Hannah.
Originally I was supposed to dopreston's graduation, drop
hannah off at her cheercompetition and my husband was
gonna drop me off at the airportbecause I am very excited.

(01:06:52):
I'm gonna go up to rhode islandand my client has a podcast.
She's calling it the soundstage.
And I'm going to be running thisweekend Saturday.
So I have a jam-packed weekendand I have got new clients,
which means I'm behind onpublishing my own podcast.

(01:07:14):
That's the way it goes, so I'llget another episode out soon.
Daryl Stevens I can't rememberwhat song he and I talked about.

Jay Franze (01:07:23):
Don't even try to guess.

Tiffany Mason (01:07:25):
I know I can never remember.
I've got too much stufffloating around in my brain.
Yes, that's what it is, is it?

Jay Franze (01:07:32):
too, much stuff floating around in there, or is
there just too much space forwhat's in there?

Tiffany Mason (01:07:38):
He did Give Me your Love.
That's what he did.
He's such a nice guy, what songdid you guys do give me, your
love, oh yeah gotcha.
It makes more sense now I thinkI was asking you to give me
your love, jay.

Jay Franze (01:07:54):
I would never be so forward no, you don't have to be
forward, you can just have it Ihave no use for it anymore.
My wife's already be forward.
You can just have it.
I have no use for it anymore.
My wife's already beat me down, you can just take whatever else
I have.
Take my love, Take it all.
Well, the reason I can't be inBoston this weekend which this
is a yearly event that I amupset that I'm missing.

(01:08:16):
The school has a yearly eventwhere we get to go back and do
some continuing education andsome networking.
Oh cool.
And I just basically get to seethe people I went to school with
.
So it's a good time and we goout to dinner, drinks and do all
that fun stuff.
But it's not going to happen forme this year, because my

(01:08:36):
daughter, lucy has got a dancecompetition and this one is in
Indiana and it's at a casino.
So it should be a good timenonetheless, to go to Indiana,
go to a casino, lose even moremoney.
But she had a competition lastweekend and has another one this
weekend and then the next oneis the Nationals, so she came in

(01:09:02):
first place and best overalllast week.
She's very good.
I'll give it to the girl.
She's a very talented girl, soI'm happy for her.
I'm happy for the rest of herdance team.
They did actually perform verywell.
They did this one song calledNew York, new York.
It's a performance called NewYork, new York.
It's over several songs, buteverybody said it was the best
they've ever performed it.

Tiffany Mason (01:09:23):
Oh, wow.

Jay Franze (01:09:24):
I'm very proud of her and, like I said, in the
past.
She's only 10.
She performs with girls mucholder than her and holds her own
.
She's the one that does all theacrobatics through the
performances and stuff.
She does all the flips andjumps and everything.
So again, dad moment, I'm sureI shed a tear, so take my man

(01:09:45):
card.

Tiffany Mason (01:09:47):
I was just going to suggest to bring some Kleenex
with yourself.

Jay Franze (01:09:50):
No, I lose my man card every time I go see her
perform, because it's, it iswhat it is.
I know I tear up at her.

Tiffany Mason (01:09:56):
I used to like get teary-eyed just watching
Preston play lacrosse, like Iwould just be like he's so good,
he's so good Stupid it's justcool to see your kids succeed.

Jay Franze (01:10:12):
But I earned my man card back yesterday I did
something I don't normally do.
I did work with my hands.
Now look at these hands.
There's not a callus on them ohmy gosh Very silky smooth and
it's not just from the lotion,so.
But my daughter's bed brokebecause Lucy, the 10 year old,
jumped on Bella, the 15 yearold's bed and these days the

(01:10:34):
beds are crap they have woodenslats under the mattress to hold
the mattress up.
The slats cracked right in thecenter of the bed so it was like
a little soup bowl or whatevermy daughter was sleeping in.
So I could not stand to see herdo that.
So I went down to the HomeDepot not a sponsor, but could
be.
But I went down to the HomeDepot, I bought some wood.

(01:10:55):
I cut some wood to size and Ididn't just put the slats in her
bed like they had it, I putslats across the entire damn bed
there's not a way that thosethings are moving, and if
anybody breaks those, they'dhave to be doing something.
really really bad Girl issleeping on a flat bed tonight.
Wow.
So there you go, and last nightright.

(01:11:16):
Well, she didn't sleep in thebed last night.
Oh yes, I in the bed last night,oh yes.
I repaired the bed last nightand then she decided to sleep in
my bed.
So guess who got to sleep inhers Me.
Good thing you had fixed it.
Good thing I fixed the bedotherwise.

Tiffany Mason (01:11:30):
I would have been in the bed.
Oh, so really, you're gettingtired of sleeping in the soup
bowl, yeah.

Jay Franze (01:11:34):
Yeah, I would not sleep in the soup bowl, no, and
then, she had a friend sleepover and her bed has a trundle
and so we pulled it out so theycould sleep on that.
And I came in the next day towake them up for breakfast or
whatever, and they're in thesoup bowl, I don't know, I know

(01:11:54):
it's like too much trouble forthem or something.

Tiffany Mason (01:11:56):
Hannah and her friends, they packed like eight
kids in the room one night Inthe old houseannah's bedroom was
.
I mean, it was a normal sizebut nothing oversized so for
eight kids to be in there, andthen they all pour out.
Well, first of all, they're allon the floor.
Some have pillows, some don't,some have like little thin
blankets, some have thickblankets, like no rhyme or

(01:12:18):
reason for anything.
No, no.
And then they all come out andthey're like we're so hot.
I'm like, yeah, you got eightpeople in there.
Yeah, it's going to get hot.
You probably need to crack adoor open or put the fan on,
crack a window.

Jay Franze (01:12:35):
Oh my gosh God forbid, somebody farts, forget
it.

Tiffany Mason (01:12:39):
It's a bunch of girls.
It's not going to happen.

Jay Franze (01:12:41):
Of course it will, George.
Thank you.
I appreciate thecongratulations to my daughter
and he also says congratulationsto your son.

Tiffany Mason (01:12:49):

.

Jay Franze (01:12:53):

Yes, he acknowledged Preston aswell, saying he must be very
intelligent, and I think the kidis very smart actually.

Wicked smart.

Tiffany Mason (01:13:10):
He's wicked smart , wicked smart.
That's right, that's my kid,it's from his mama.

Jay Franze (01:13:16):
It's all about the mama.
The last thing I wanted tomention is I had a chance to
talk with Gina Fritz this pastMonday.
Oh nice, she apologized for therescheduling back and forth.
It's been a long time.
She's been trying to get on theshow for a little bit and we
finally coordinated ourschedules and got her on the

Well, by far, by far oh my gosh, when I saw the picture of the
three girls I was like, yes, that's, that's my one, that's
the one I connect with bella, Iwill tell you, she here a little

Jay Franze (01:14:38):
One thing she's very much into is sign language.
I don't know why, I don't knowwhere this came from, I don't
know why she picked it up, butshe's been doing it for years
and she's very, very good at it.
But she does cover tunes ofsongs.
So she did a cover tune of theGoo Goo Dolls song Iris, and
people picked up on it and theystarted duetting her because of

(01:15:01):
how good of a job she did on it.
Oh, wow.
So another shameless plug thatmade me lose my man card.
