Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome.
Today we are joined by Naomi, the founder of A Joyful Shaman,
a vibrational therapist and amodern shaman helping people
shift emotional patterns throughbreath, sound and spirit.
And really special for us today.
Stay tuned because Naomi isgoing to give us a mini breath
and sound journey and it's likea little personal healing
(00:22):
ceremony in your earbuds.
So welcome Naomi.
How are you doing today?
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Oh, thank you so much
for having me.
I'm honored to be here.
I'm excited to share a bit ofmy path and to guide everyone
that finds this and listens tothis little journey that brings
breath into their body, intotheir heart.
So thank you for having me.
I'm doing wonderful.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Excellent.
So we would love to know, likehow is it that you came to do
this?
How is it that you came to callyourself a shaman?
Like what is your story?
What are the spiritual momentsthat you had throughout your
life that were like oh, this ismy path, this is my path.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Sure, so I myself
don't call myself a shaman.
In the shamanic practice youcall yourself a shamanic healer
or shamanic practitioner.
If your immediate community andtraditionally it would be in
indigenous tribes call you ashaman, which is a very general
term, that means teacher, guide, healer, counselor, chieftain,
(01:28):
warrior.
It's a very general term.
If they call you that, then youtake it upon yourself to call
yourself that among those peopleor if you're addressing
yourself.
So my community has certainlycalled me shaman.
I live in Lakeland, florida, here in Central Florida, between
Tampa and Orlando, and I'mknown as the local shaman.
(01:51):
It's kind of a funny thing.
A lot of people like to jokearound and you know they invite
me to dinner.
They're like oh, we're havingthe shaman come over.
You know we're having thisperson come over, but I wouldn't
call myself outright.
That's a bit insulting, it's abit egotistical.
So I always refer myself as ahealer, but my business is
(02:11):
called the Joyful Shaman, justto solidify like I believe that
I have been placed in a positionof authority to be able to help
people with the gifts that Ihave acquired and my self-belief
in helping people return hometo themselves, to remind
themselves of who they are, toutilize different techniques of
(02:33):
mindfulness, of sound, of bodywork to help them get out of the
conscious and go deeper withinthemselves.
My story as far as how I got onthe shamanic path is one of
number one birthright.
I am part Mayan indigenous, soI am original indigenous to
(02:55):
North American land and that ison my father's side.
My grandmother and all of theother matriarchs that have come
before me at least by fourgenerations it's been written in
their oral histories and in thejournals that they've kept.
They were all herbal medicinewomen.
They all kept beautiful, largegardens growing a variety of
(03:18):
different plants and vegetables, using their recipes their
materia medica, as it's calledto create herbal remedies,
tinctures, salves, liniments forthemselves and also selling it
to their local pharmacy andbotanical stores so that people
(03:39):
who didn't have money to go tothe doctors could at least
acquire something to help easepain, to help at least heal the
process, so that infectionwouldn't take place.
My grandmother passed that onto my sister and I.
Generally it's passed on to thefirstborn daughter or the head
of the household and mygrandmother had a boy my dad and
(04:00):
that was her only child, so shedidn't really teach my dad when
they came to the States becausethey're from the Yucatan, the
lower part of Mexico, fromMerida.
My dad got married to my mother.
I am the firstborn daughter.
My grandmother passed it on tome and also to my sister.
We both used the remedies butI've really taken to it.
(04:23):
I wouldn't necessarily callmyself a green thumb, I'm not
the best at growing plants andit's hard to grow plants in
Florida with the sun radiatingeverywhere.
But that being said, she alsotaught me the gift and the
insight behind using theseherbal recipes and laying of
(04:44):
hands on people.
She grew up Catholic and thenlater converted to evangelical
Christianity and I grew up in anevangelical Christian home.
So I would say those beliefsystems were really instilled
and conditioned in me as a childthat with old remedies, with
old belief systems kind ofmerged the beginning of the
(05:07):
shamanic path.
I would say that my trueawakening to the path didn't
really come until I was about 30, 31.
So really only about eightyears ago is really when I woke
up to it.
I had from birth very strongintuitive gifts that I didn't
(05:28):
understand.
Of course we're all empaths.
Some of us are just moresensitive, more in tune to that
frequency than others.
So I was born that way.
I'm also a medium I don't liketo use the word psychic but
intuitive.
So I'm claircognizant, I'mclairaudient, I'm clairvoyant.
So all of these gifts at a youngage in a very, very evangelical
(05:53):
Christian home ended up being arecipe for kind of disaster for
me.
So I really repressed a lot ofthat, just because I think my
grandmother knew and just didn'tknow how to handle that.
My dad wasn't going tounderstand that either.
So I just kind of heldeverything in.
I wanted to be loved andaccepted and not rejected and
(06:15):
not seem weird or possessed oranything like that.
I really felt the call in mycareer.
I'm a licensed massagetherapist of 20 years and that's
my main business here in theLakeland community where I live.
But I really felt the call inmy 20s and my later 20s to go
into holistic body work, learning practices from Ayurveda
(06:38):
, from Thailand, from China, from a lot of Asian countries,
and just really embodying thepractices of mindfulness,
especially Buddhism, in my work.
I love world religions, I loveworld cultures.
I feel like they just provide abroad philosophical background
for me, that I apply a lot ofdifferent things in my own life
(07:01):
and in the way that I counselpeople.
But learning those techniquesreally started to open me up to
something greater In my 20s,kind of had an identity crisis
once I left home, really didn'tresonate with the formal
structure of organized religionanymore.
I just had a lot of religioustrauma growing up and did a lot
(07:22):
of therapy for about 15 years toreally come to terms of what my
personal beliefs are, how I seemyself, how I live my life in
the world, how do I, you know, understand what my values and
morals are outside of what myparents taught me, outside of
what they believe, outside ofwhat the church says.
And that took some time.
(07:43):
It took a lot of healing, a lotof childhood trauma, and I'm
still healing from that atvarious points in my life.
But it really wasn't until Iopened up my first business when
I was 30 years old that I lostthat business within two years
of opening, completely crushedand burned.
(08:04):
And it was absolutely necessary.
I feel.
In my healing journey and myspiritual journey I think my
soul signed up to buildsomething that took 10 years to
dream, for it to burn down tothe ground, to the point where I
had to file for Chapter 7bankruptcy.
I was bottom of the barrel, nothing left, and I had left a
(08:27):
corporate career to open up myfirst business, which was a
beautiful boutique, luxury,high-end Ayurvedic spa and yoga
studio along the Gulf Coast ofFlorida.
And I did it from a place ofego, you know, I recognize that
and I openly admit that.
But it was necessary.
It had to be completely, as wecall, initiated, completely,
(08:51):
experience profound death andgrief and just really be
stripped away from everything toreturn back to spirit.
It was after that loss I had toclose my business on my 31st
birthday.
I left four weeks later to gogrieve and cry in the mountains
of Asheville, north Carolina.
(09:12):
I wanted to just hide away inthe mountains.
The mountains have always beena place for me to power up,
restore, feel at home, come backto my center and I needed to
hide, I needed to hibernate, Ineeded to embody the medicine of
bear and go in my little caveand just cry.
It was a profound death havingto go to federal court plead my
(09:34):
case.
Please eliminate almost$400,000 of debt, you know for
my business.
And it was in North Carolinathat I had a visitation from my
grandmother.
She's already been in spiritfor almost a decade now and at
the time she had been in spiritfor a couple of years.
It is the only time that I canhonestly say I've experienced a
(09:57):
full physical apparition in mylife.
I was deep, deep in depression, crying all the time, trying to
find work, trying to hold down ajob, trying to just reinvent
myself out there and reallystruggling to face this darkness
that I needed to face withinmyself.
(10:17):
And one night, around 3 am, mygrandmother showed up in my room
sitting on my bed.
My bed was literally on thefloor I, you know, it was in
between an air mattress and youknow, and something else, and
she sat there and I could Icould almost touch her, you know
, she was so real and I lookedat her and I said am I dreaming?
Is this real?
(10:38):
And she's like no, this is real, I'm here for you.
And I said what's going on?
This is real, I'm here for you.
And I said what's going on?
And she said I'm sorry for theway that I didn't love you, the
way that you deserve to be loved, and for not telling you who
you were while I was on theearth in the physical form.
And I was like panicking.
(10:58):
I was like, oh God, I've gotinto full psychosis.
What's happening in my life andshe literally said you're a
healer.
She's like you come from a longline of powerful women that
have special gifts and I turnedit away because I thought that's
(11:18):
what was the right thing to do.
But now that I'm back on theother side, I recognize and know
that I need to guide you andhelp you to reclaim who you are
and what you came here to do.
She's like you have a messagefor people.
You're here to help people comeback home to themselves.
And she's like can you holdgreat powers in a variety of
(11:40):
different ways, but you needhelp in learning how to wield
them for the good of others andnot from a place of ego.
I was like full on having apanic attack, you know, and I
said I don't know what to say tothis grandma and she said you
need to go home.
You need to go home to Florida.
She's like you're going to openup another business in four
(12:00):
months.
She's like this business willcontinue.
It will evolve from yourinitial concept.
Go along with the journey.
She's like this business willcontinue.
It will evolve from yourinitial concept.
Go along with the journey.
She's like you have a lot toheal.
She's like you will go throughmany challenges.
Life will never be easy for you.
She's like, not right now.
She goes.
You will come to a place whereyou'll find peace and balance.
She goes as long as youcontinue to do your healing work
(12:22):
along the way.
And she left and that's theonly time I've ever seen my
grandma in that way and I wasjust like I don't know what to
do with this.
I came home about four weekslater, right before Thanksgiving
holiday here, and I opened upmy business in March of brick
(12:43):
and mortar.
Just wanted to have a littleshop offer body work, little
metaphysical bohemian shopselling dresses, candles,
accessories and I did it in themiddle of the pandemic when it
started in 2020.
And my business like explodedand like blew up in six months.
Like I was fully booked, peoplewanted more.
(13:05):
I was in a sublease, moved onto bigger space, did three years
of journeying with other peopleand realized I need to dive
deeper into my spiritual work.
I need to really turn away fromwhat I think other people will
accept.
I live in a very conservativecommunity, very, very, very
conservative community.
(13:25):
That's growing and changing butwill take time.
But I was accepted.
You know, I was loved.
I felt that I still just hadfear and I didn't trust.
I almost lost my business againfor the second time as a lesson
to trust and have faith.
And that's when someone came tome and said you know, you remind
(13:46):
me of a shamanic healer that'shere in town.
And I said shaman, what's that?
I said I thought that was justyou know, indigenous practices.
They're like, no, they're likewe're all indigenous to the
earth when you think about it.
And I said, well, who is thisperson?
They said it's this very, youknow, powerful woman.
She's a yoga instructor,pilates instructor, but has
(14:07):
studied 30 years with Andean andPeruvian shamans and sorcerers
and magicians and all theseother people deep in the
mountains of Peru.
And she's like I think it wouldreally benefit for you to talk
to her.
I think it would be reallypowerful for your healing and
just to awaken you to see ifthis is a path for you.
(14:27):
And that's when I met myshamanic teacher, ali Smith,
three years ago.
And that's when I met myshamanic teacher, ali Smith
three years ago, and the rest ishistory.
We did an apprenticeship.
I met her grandmother teacher, who is still my teacher today,
linda Starwolf, who owns a hugeshamanic school in western North
Carolina on the SmokyMountainside Venus Rising
(14:49):
University.
It's the first psycho-spiritualuniversity that offers
bachelor's degrees in shamanismand I practice with her, study
with her and work with otherhealers.
So I feel like through this longstory and I'm a Gemini, so I'm
going to talk a lot I kind of goaround the bush and as a shaman
we are storytellers, sosometimes our stories you got to
(15:10):
keep up with us, but it'sthrough deep grief and pain and
complete surrender, of justletting go and just
understanding that even if mylife continues to blow up in a
lot of big ways, I'll always beheld and I can trust in the
(15:31):
energies of the earth that'sbeen here long before we were
and will be here long before, long after we're gone, and trust
in the creator and trust thatwe're all interconnected, you
know, and just opening myself upto believe that there's
something greater than what myphysical reality likes to tell
(15:51):
me sometimes, what society likesto tell me, with what other
people like to tell me and whatmy shadow likes to tell me
sometimes.
So if that kind of answers yourquestion, that's what led me to
Shemani Keeling.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
I love all of that.
Thank you so much for sharingthat.
What really touched me close tothe beginning is that you have
awareness of your IK, yourindigenous knowledge, where it
came from, your lineage, yourmatriarchal and your patriarchal
line.
And so this is something that Istruggle with, for, you know,
(16:28):
probably some obvious reasons isthat I come from colonizers.
I've been removed from the landthat I was indigenous, that my
ancestral line was indigenous on, and I really struggled with
that throughout my life.
And you know, I was intowitchcraft a lot when I was
younger and it created a hugeproblem because my parents are
like hardcore Christians and sothat caused a very big problem.
(16:53):
But it kept calling to me overand over and over again and I'm
really grateful that throughthat, a lot of the pieces that
were calling to me were actuallyfrom Ireland, from Scotland,
from England.
That was a really natural pullfor me.
And then now being older andreally learning about how we
should be connecting to our ownIndigenous knowledge instead of
(17:16):
trying to go into other people'sand take from that and then
essentially make money off ofthat in some way, which is not a
great way, not a great karmicway to be going about things.
And so recently I started doinga facilitator training for
facilitators to get better atfacilitating and like women's
(17:37):
circles and healings and all ofthis kind of stuff, and the
first portion of it is ancestralhealing and that's a really
sensitive thing for me because Iam not connected to my
grandmothers.
Sensitive thing for me because Iam not connected to my
grandmothers.
Both of them were very bitter, angry people that didn't like my
(18:02):
parents, because my parents arevery Christian.
They're extremely judgmentaland that caused a lot of rifts
throughout the family so Ididn't really get to be
connected to that.
So I don't really have a senseof pride around any of that.
And so just recently I found acompany that does not sell your
DNA and paid for in mymatriarchal mind to go back
(18:23):
125,000 years, which isabsolutely incredible.
I didn't even know that waspossible and maybe I'll include
that in the show notes of wherepeople could do that if they're
interested.
And I am sitting veryimpatiently day by day, any day.
Now I'm going to get thoseresults back.
You know, I did the swab, Isent it in.
I'm waiting, I'm waiting andthey've acknowledged that
(18:43):
they've received it.
So I'm just waiting for thoseresults now so that I can
ideally go to those places youknow where my tribal families
were from and go and learn thatindigenous knowledge and so all
of that.
So I envy you for havingconnection there.
You know that's such abeautiful thing.
(19:03):
So thank you so much forsharing that.
Let's jump into our sound andbreath journey.
How does that feel for you?
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Yeah, absolutely.
Before we begin the breathworkjourney, I want to talk a little
bit about the breathwork that Ilike to facilitate.
My grandmother, teacher LindaStarwolf, is the creator
formally of shamanic breathwork.
She and Stan Groff togethercreated holotropic breathwork in
(19:30):
the 70s at Esalon in NorthernCalifornia.
But Linda is just super devotedto Seneca, wolf Clan teachings,
shamanic teachings, and feltthe need to bring in shamanic
traditions with greaterintention to holotropic and
somatic breathwork, so it's acombination thereof.
(19:50):
The way that I make it my own isI add vibrational therapy to it
in person.
I utilize tuning forks andlarge Tibetan bowls on the body
physically to vibrate the bodyto help regulate the nervous
system and open up sacral chakrafor stuck and repressed
emotions to come out.
(20:11):
Breathwork is so powerfulbecause there's no walls with
breathwork, there's noinhibitions.
Anything that you fear, anything that you are conscious
or unconscious, that's stuck inthe body from trauma, from pain,
from grief, will come up if youfully allow yourself surrender
to the rhythm of the breath.
Normally I use a very channeledchakra activating playlist that
(20:37):
I play very, very loud.
Only in the beginning will I dodrumming to call in the spirits
to protect the circle in thecontainer, and then I do the
drumming at the end to call backthe person from deep into the
unconscious mind.
Breath work, especially in thestyle that I like to teach and
(21:00):
facilitate, is done normally foran hour.
It's very similar to holotropic.
It can release a high amount ofDMT and oxytocin and dopamine
into the system, like taking avery mild ayahuasca journey with
a lot greater control.
So it does get you veryelevated into the upper chakras.
(21:23):
I always like to say you're alittle high as a kite, we're
doing it for long periods oftime, but you feel such deep
releases.
A lot of people may cry, scream, laugh, dance, move their body,
vibrate.
It has a full body systemicnervous system release that gets
(21:45):
you out of your regularconscious loop, especially if
you ruminate, if you haveanxiety, if you're deep in
depression, and totally resetsyou like original programming
button.
It's the number one way that Ifeel that I have totally
transformed my life.
It's been crucial and a hugepart of my healing, of who I was
(22:06):
like five years ago to who I amnow and to who I will be and
continue to become and evolve.
To Breath work is that conduit.
For me is the channel.
So I do like to preface thatbefore I start, and so what I'm
going to do is I'm going to showpeople the shamanic breath.
I'm going to show you a reallygreat way to do a kind of
(22:30):
impactful breath but stillgentle breath on the body.
Is there a variety of differentbreaths that we like to do?
In shamanic breath work we saythere's no right or wrong way to
breathe as long as you keepbreathing, and so this is the
way that I like to breathe.
It's taking a deep inhalethrough the nose and then exhale
(22:54):
through the mouth.
So inhale through the nose andexhale through the mouth, and
when you exhale, you fullyengage that core.
It will feel like an ab workout.
So if you're lying down and youshould be in a safe and
comfortable position, no oneshould be doing breath work
while driving.
Being in a calm, quiet spacewhere no one can bother you,
(23:16):
like minimal lights or evenwearing an eye mask, would be
great.
Doing this breath in a fluidmotion looks like this you find
your own natural rhythm, so itfeels like a wave up down, up,
(23:36):
down.
When I work with people, I'llsay in, out, in, out in, out to
help keep the rhythm.
But for today, I'm going to do alittle bit of a variation of a
journey, with some gentle breathwork.
I am going to start with alittle bit of some chimes and
I'll bring in the drum to do thevisualization.
(23:57):
In the beginning I just want tofocus on coming into the body,
okay, and then once you start tohear the drum, that will be the
cue for people to begin tobreathe, as they're already more
relaxed and just their body isready to be more open to receive
(24:17):
.
Okay, so I'm excited, let'sbegin.
Okay, I'm just going to grab mychimes, so I'm just going to
have you close your eyes.
We're going to take a deepbreath in through your nose and
exhale softly through your mouth.
(24:39):
This is a regular yogic breath,a natural, somatic breath to
deeply relax Again, inhale andthen exhale, feel your body
(25:00):
settle, feel the earth holdingyou, place one hand on your
heart and one hand on your belly, breathe into this space and
notice what you feel.
Sit with that for a moment andthen let's set an intention.
(25:30):
Maybe an intention for you is Ireturn to my wholeness or I am
open to receive Whatever iscoming up for you, for this
breath work whether we'recalling in, releasing or just
(25:51):
being is perfect in this moment,in this journey, we're going to
be using a simple, shamanicbreath.
It's a steady, open-mouthbreath like this In through the
(26:12):
nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and outthrough the mouth.
It's like a wave, the windmoving through you.
Let's begin slowly, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale.
(26:37):
Let the rhythm be natural, letit move you Few more breaths.
I'm going to begin to call inour guides and our protectors.
(27:04):
Continue with the breath, callin our team of light.
Honor the spirits of the fourdirections and use the drum to
represent Mother Earth, theheartbeat, the energy that
connects us all With your breathand the beat.
(27:34):
Imagine yourself walking intonature, Use your breath.
Imagine yourself walking intonature, use your breath.
A forest, a mountain, a deserttrail, wherever your soul feels
(27:54):
at home.
Breathe you come to a glowingportal, a doorway of energy.
With each breath, step closer, keep breathing, keep breathing.
(28:24):
The light of the portal is withyou, signaling you to trust and
have faith, calling you to stepforward in this journey of
breath, into yourself, intospirit, into the earth.
(28:47):
When you're ready, step through.
Use your breath to give youstrength to do so.
As you cross over, you realizeyou are in a sacred space now, a
(29:10):
place that you go, where youcan connect to yourself, connect
to your heart.
Connect to yourself, connect toyour heart, connect to
everything that you feel withinyou.
It can be a cave, it could be asanctuary.
(29:33):
It could even be a temple oflight.
Let the breath move you, letthe sound guide you.
Every breath releases what nolonger serves.
Every beat brings you back toyour truth.
(29:55):
Inhale, exhale.
You are remembering your power.
Inhale, exhale.
You are remembering your power, your joy, your wholeness.
Feel the energy clearing you, softening you, awakening you.
(32:21):
If emotions rise, breathe.
Visions come receive you.
You are seeing.
Keep breathing, thank you.
Way away, way, breathe, breathe, breathe.
Connect to your breath.
(32:44):
The breath shows the way.
Thank you, we are home.
(33:41):
We are home.
We are home, thank you.
(34:54):
Slowly, allow the breath toreturn to a normal breathing
pattern.
Begin to journey back, carryingthe healing with you.
Let your body be still, letyour breath be still, let your
(35:23):
breath be soft.
Feel the ground beneath you,the rhythm inside you.
Wiggle your fingers, wiggleyour toes.
Take one more deep breath inand exhale with a sigh.
(35:47):
Whisper to yourself I am whole,I am home, I am light and am
home, I am light.
And when you're ready, gentlyopen your eyes and bring this
(36:08):
sacred feeling into your day Awhole.
And so it is Welcome back.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
Wow, that was a
journey.
That was a journey.
I definitely feel that highness.
It's not my first time doingThreat4, but every single time
it still feels so impossible.
Even the things that you'resaying, and like allowing that
to become a piece of me, liketruly believing that, which is
(36:45):
what I believe a lot of thesejourneys are for is like let's
integrate that into ourselves, make that like a true belief,
like I am home, I am light, it'slike I feel whole.
I am whole and you know as I am.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Thank you, that was
wonderful oh, it's an honor and
a privilege to guide and to bearwitness to those that journey.
So thank you truly all right, naomi.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
How can people
connect with you?
Speaker 2 (37:14):
absolutely so.
Of course, my business is theJoyful Shaman.
I definitely have a website,wwwjoyfulshamancom.
I'm really big on social media.
On Instagram my handle is atJoyful Shaman.
I'm always posting videosthroughout the week of, you know
(37:35):
, different teachings showingdifferent ceremonies, rituals,
practices, readings, things likethat.
I also am a retreat leader.
I literally just got back lastweek from leading a powerful
retreat in Yalapa, mexico, outside of Puerto Vallarta, for
15 women, deep in the jungles ofMexico, where we did powerful
(37:57):
breath work to open up and workwith sacral chakra Very
transformative work.
I actually have an upcomingretreat at the end of July in
Mount Shasta, california, wherewe will be working with the
powerful root chakra of theworld, but working with all
chakras.
I will be doing breath work.
We're actually going to bedoing it in Panther's Meadow,
(38:20):
which is a powerful place at thebase of Shasta Mountain with
babbling brooks out of a storytale.
We're going to lie in natureand breathe.
So we're going to be practicinga lot of rituals and other
sacred practices in nature whileconnecting, and that's July
24th through the 27th.
We've got spots for four moreladies.
(38:40):
It's a small group, six orseven women coming with me to
the mountain to heal, to do somedeep spiritual connection
