(00:11):
Welcome to the KindnessChronicles, where once again,
quit doing that.
We hope to inject the world witha dose of the Minnesota kindness
that it most desperately needs.
We have a full house.
Yeah, Pete, I don't, maybe morepeople are coming tonight, but
in studio we've got Steve Brown.
Hi everybody.
Hello.
We've got, our guest, uh, RogerMcNair, who's gonna be talking

(00:33):
to us shortly.
Not yet, sir.
About the, the, did you see mylips start to curl?
Well, there's something going onover there.
And then my friend Jeff Hoffmanis here.
And, uh, we're gonna talk toJeff A.
Little bit about what, I'm notsure, Jeff's taking notes in the
corner over here.
He's taking notes, which is verybizarre.
And then on the, uh, on the linewe got, kg kg.
Where are we calling you at?
Just left Minnetonka.

(00:54):
I'm heading, uh, to NortheastMinneapolis on this beautiful
night as we record it is Springhas sprung here in the Twin
Cities and I'm excited for, uh,all of that.
But, uh, yeah, looking forwardto the conversation night.
As always, guys.
Uh, it's, uh, a lot of kindnessin the air.
We'll get to some kindness inSt.
Paul.
Last night.
We saw a ton of it, uh, inAugusta with Rory McElroy.

(01:17):
Uh, just a spectacular editionof the Masters.
Fantastic.
Um, what's going on in NortheastMinneapolis?
Well, as you know, I, um, Icross pollinate and, and thank
you to Minnesota MasonicCharities.
Title, sponsor of Wooden Sticks.
We're doing a live show atInsight Brewing tonight.
Our special guest will be, uh,legendary Wild Gold, Devin Nik,

(01:42):
and that God for you.
Um, wow.
He was waiting for that one.
I have a Devon Nik story.
I, I, I so our former CFO whoused or who lives in Edina.
One time got the dry cleaningfor Devin Nik, was delivered to

(02:04):
her house instead of to hishouse.
And I think he must be an Edinaresident, but her son, was an
Edina high school hockey player, first line, defenseman.
Wow.
So it was very exciting whenDevin Nik came over and as I
understand it, Devin Nik wouldbe a great.
Candidate to be on the KindnessChronicles.

(02:24):
Let's get him over here.
Nah, he ain't.
Once he's done the sticks, hedoesn't cross back this way.
No, no.
Even with, even with the Masonsinvolved.
Damn.
Yep.
Damn.
The wooden sticks conundrum.
Yeah.
We just, you know, but I, I'mcross pollinate now.
I'm assuming the paycheck fromWooden Sticks is better than the
one that he gets at the KindnessChronicles.

(02:45):
Um, yeah, but I probably getmore, um, oxytocin from this
one.
That's true.
Very good.
Very nice.
Yep.
Well played.
That's what we're looking for isoxytocin.
So Kevin.
Let's go back to Sundayafternoon at the Masters.
What makes Roy McElroy easy gota root for is he's real.
I think when Tiger Woods was athis almost robotic in the way he

(03:07):
win f for.
Some of those flaws came upduring that Sunday round.
I mean, he, he had thattournament in his hands.
He washed it away on 13.
What happened there?
What was there with all nerves?
Like it's just nerves.
Like he could hit a hundred golfballs, uh, from that 80 yard

(03:27):
spot and put 99 of them within10 feet of the pin.
Like it was an easy shot.
He just opened up the face and,and he, he hit it fat, so to
speak.
And it just was a horrible miss.
But he wanted it so much and thepressure, and over a decade
since he's won a major, the, thecareer Grand Slam at Augusta,

(03:48):
which has always haunted him.
And then after all that, afterblowing that big lead, he gets
up on 15 and, uh, Justin Rose, his, his, you know, cup teammate
is him at the top of the board.
And he hits from 220 yards toseven iron that has to be
perfect and has to land in theright part of the green.
Otherwise it's gonna go back inthe water, it goes over, you got

(04:10):
no chance of making birdie.
And he knocks it to six feet.
And you know, I mean, just theway it all played out, you know,
18, he makes that mistake again, blows it again, gets the, and
that, um, it was everything youhope for.
Was Justin Rose and the classthat he showed, truly enjoying

(04:35):
that moment and then seeingShane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood
and some of Rory's buddieswaiting, uh, to hug him and
embrace him as he walked to theclubhouse.
It, it had all the feels hoppyhis daughter, I mean, it, it
just, him breaking down likethat tournament, uh, and that
moment, it's just, oh God, it'sextraordinary.
Is this a long story?

(05:00):
Steve, you looked like you werereally excited to talk about
golf today.
Well, I, I, I am not gonnapretend like I know anything.
Please about it, please.
I, I heard about it and uh, Iknew it was kind of going on,
but I wasn't, well, I actuallytried to watch, I couldn't find
it anyway.
I think it was too late.
But it sounds to me like theyplayed right.
He played right into the sportsproducer's.
Oh, God.
Without question, man.
I mean, he, I think he was goingfor drama kg.

(05:21):
I think Mission accomplished.
Yeah.
He's going for the, bringing itdown and then third act boom.
Sounds like he, oh man, he knowswhat he's doing.
I.
He would've preferred to cruiseto victory if he, I'm sure could
have kept his nerves together.
It just, I think he's human and,and I think he's, he's been that
guy for a long time.
He's an easy guy to root for.

(05:42):
I been traveling all weekendwith a while, so I had a chance
to watch a ton of it, but welanded in time to get back to
the couch for the back nine.
Uh, and that's where all theaction was.
Like the, the old cliche is.
Doesn't start until the backnine on, on Sunday.
And, and this absolutelyfulfilled that to be true.

(06:02):
Are you a Bryson Debo guy?
I am.
And, and, and the young lady Ilive with is not, and that's
fine.
Um, and I'm not a live guy, butI believe Bryson Dembo is great
for golf.
He's, um.
He's energetic, he's fun.
And I think the, the narrativeafter the masters got blown out

(06:24):
the porch and everybody's downon Bryson because he was to the
same.
Rory wouldn't talk to me duringthe round, but it was taken
completely outta context.
Nobody talks to each other on,on a Sunday at any major, much
less the.
You're gonna battle.
And so I think that got a littlebit over overblown, so to speak.

(06:47):
But no, I love Bryce in theshamble.
Yeah.
I do like the way that heinteracts with the crowd and,
you know, he's, he's high fivingguys and or he is doing this
thing where he's letting peopletouch his forearms.
Like he walks down the line andhe is like, touch me.
It seems very like a religiousexperience for people.
But even, even, uh, Rory wasdoing some high fives.

(07:09):
I thought it was real sweet how.
Shane Lowry was waiting for himand, you know, yes.
Yeah.
Very, very fun.
Okay, now, Minnesota Wild, Ijust have to tell you what I was
doing last night.
I was watching the Calgary game, and they were losing three to
one, and I thought it was theend of the game.
And it was just the end of thesecond period, Calgary came back

(07:29):
and ended up winning that game, which made the goal by, uh.
Eck in the, what?
20 seconds left in the thirdperiod.
Yeah.
That was it.
The wild, and, and Calgary hasone more game tomorrow, I guess
in theory they could have lost, but they're playing an LA team,
like the Vegas team they playedlast night, that is locked into
their play spots.
So they're not, they're notplaying all their, their best

(07:49):
players, which is what you do.
This I.
What made it incredible is theyhadn't really been able to get
many chances in that final fiveor six minutes, and they pull
the goalie and they're notgetting anything going.
And Anaheim clears the fuck andthe wild start that sequence

(08:11):
behind their own net with like38 seconds to go and the odds of
them getting all the way in thezone possessing the fucking,
making a player are are not verygood at that point.
And they dump it in, which isanother talking point because.
Wraps it around the wall andmakes the play like he holds the
hits the puck.
And I'm gonna tell right now, nine out 10 players in this

(08:34):
league can't make the play hemakes.
And, and most of'em get thatpuck picked off and the game's
over because there's three guysin between him and Matt Bold.
But he, instead of shooting thepuck at the net and hoping that
ER Bold can get a rebound, whichis what most guys would do, he
decides to make this incrediblepass through the three players
and.

(08:55):
Good enough to sees on the otherside of the net, doesn't shoot
the puck, which is what mostplayers would do in a panic late
situation in the game.
With the clock ticking down, hehas the the presence of mind to
shuffle it over to and then getsthe shot that is stopped
incredible saved by the Anaheimgoalie, and then X stays in
position to chip in the rebound.

(09:15):
And literally there was so muchtension in that building last
night.
The roof came off the buildingand then that led.
To the wild.
Okay.
The one point they needed, nowthey're in, and here comes the
kindness angle.
Guus skates to the bench afterthe buzzer goes up to Coach
Hines and says, Hey, that pointgot us in, we're in right coach.
And he says, yep, we're in now.

(09:37):
And he goes, Hey, put flower in.
And so that, I've never seenthis.
Oh wow.
It's a tie game.
And now they're putting MarkAndre Flory in cold into an
overtime game.
And of course the building goescrazy.
And of course they're chantinghis name.
And of course there's a penaltytaken and Anon gets a PowerPoint
and he's making all theseincredible saves.
He's double stacking the pads,he's doing the poke check.

(10:00):
One Pocock hits the post andhe's talking to the Post.
I mean, it just was incredible.
And then the game ends, Boldywins it.
The Ducks line up to shake hishand, the wild circle up and
give him all this love, and thecrowd stays there to chant his
name with his family inIntendance.
Honestly, it's as good as itgets.
I got choked up people.
They were in that building,have.

(10:25):
Realizing in that moment likethis, this should be flowers
time.
That's pretty cool.
Might be the last time he everplays in his brilliant career.
Awesome.
And he got the win.
He gets the win.
He got the W win number 5 75.
He got the great call, Johnny.
Great call by you.
He'd get the win.
how about ovechkin?
Uh, this is gonna be it forhockey talk.

(10:46):
Yeah.
We're pretty deep into thesport.
We're into the sports.
It sounds like a great moment.
I'm, I let it go to one sticksright now, and there was a I'll
let it go.
I like I the kindness part of ittoo.
There was another great moment.
Let's hear, uh, Ovechkin,eclipsed Wayne Gretzky's goal
scoring record.
Yes.
How about that?
And I just love the fact thatGretzky, you know, was there.
He and his wife are there to, tocongratulate Ovechkin and his

(11:09):
family.
His, his wife and kid Ovechkindid Okay in the marriage
department.
I don't know if you ever, he didjust fine.
I'm not sure if you saw anypictures of Mrs.
Ovechkin, but, uh, she's, well, she's okay.
Okay.
She's at least a seven.
I'll check.
Yeah, I'll check it out.
On a scale of one to six at herteeth too, hopefully.
Yeah, her teeth are fantastic.

(11:30):
She's got'em all capped.
Ovechkin on the other hand.
He's missing one right up topand he probably doesn't care.
No, he probably doesn't.
But Gretzky handled that with somuch class, and I love that he
had the Gordy Howell, uh, pin onhis jacket to, to show some love
to the, and as his dad said, like, listen, whoever breaks any
of your records, if it everhappens, make sure that you show

(11:52):
the kind of grace to them.
That absolutely on he, well, this has been the Chronicles.
Wooden Sticks edition.
Yeah, exactly.
Happy to have you here.
Um, we're gonna switch gears fora second here, and we're going
to, uh, to bring into theconversation my friend Roger
McNair.

(12:12):
Worshipful brother Roger McNair.
Not very.
Wow.
A member of, Helios Lodge.
The Masonic Lodge, up inCambridge, Minnesota.
he's a former, uh, board chairof Minnesota Masonic Charities.
He's been, uh, involved for along time and he, and his friend
Bill Weiss have been co-chairinga big event.

(12:33):
To raise money for a number of,children's charities, and we
asked Roger to come in.
The event is, uh, taking placeon May 3rd, as I understand it.
May 3rd, first Saturday in May.
First Saturday in May.
Tell us about what this iscalled.
'cause it's, it's a, it's amouthful.
It is a mouthful.
And we abbreviate it to CC 4KTC, which that's the abbreviated

(12:53):
version.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So what would it be without theabbreviation, clays, camps for
kids, twin Cities.
It is a sporting Clays event toaugment what Minnesota Masonic
Charities does for the MasonicChildren's Hospital and the
Masonic Institute for theDeveloping Brain Effectually

(13:13):
Children's Health in Minnesota.
And it also supports the shrine,uh, the Shrine Shriners Hospital
Camps it doesn't provideanything for the Shrine
Hospitals.
It only provides for the camps.
For kids to teach'emself-reliance and give'em a
chance to have fun like kidswithout limb discrepancies have.

(13:35):
So is that the, is that theproper term limb discrepancies?
I'm being sincere.
it's not often, but, uh, takenote.
Yeah.
That is what they say, you know, around the, healthcare, around
the shrine.
Okay.
Very cool.
So how long has this been going?
How many people participate?
Where do we find moreinformation?
This is trap shooting, right?

(13:56):
They call it trap shooting too.
Sporting.
Sporting plays.
Sporting plays, yeah.
A little different than trap.
It's different than, I don'tknow the difference.
Okay.
Yeah.
Well, in trap, all your, allyour shots are essentially going
away from a central spot.
Okay.
And you're 25 yards behind it.
Okay.
Or 20 yards behind it.
And in sporting clays, youtravel a circuit with different

(14:16):
clay throwers at.
Different areas.
So yeah, there's your'sstations, right?
Yeah.
10 It simulate essentially.
Yeah.
Simul simulates differenthunting scenarios.
Oh, even cool.
Even a rabbit it'll roll up.
Yeah.
The rabbit's the only one I'veever had any success with.
'cause you just aim low and hopelike how it hit something.
There's some vi I was looking atthe website, I was looking at
the visuals from, it's prettycool.
I, I didn't know the difference,but that's really cool.

(14:38):
Yeah.
It, it's, it's a fun game.
It's, it's called golf withguns.
Okay.
Golf with guns.
Yes.
Yeah.
And most men know the differencebetween trap shooting and
sporting place.
Well, thank, clarify.
I'm not one of, of those men.
I'm not one of'em.
I'm, well, that's, we, I, youand I are, we represent all, all
dudes out there to make surethey understand.
Yes.

(14:58):
We have real men and then wehave guys like you and me.
Yes.
Well, you've even participated.
You should know what the, I haveJohn participated.
Not I, let me just tell you agreat, clays story.
So one of my favorite moments ofmy life, and I'm not kidding, is
I took Ben, our son Ben, out tothe, uh, wings North.

(15:19):
Wings North for the sportingClays event.
And on the very first hole, orthe very first station, I think
it was one of those rabbit ones,Ben had never.
Done sporting clays before andthe very first clay that came
up, he knocked it right out ofthe air.
Really nice, and he turnedaround and looked at me like.
This is not hard.

(15:39):
Yeah.
Good hand eye coordination.
Mm-hmm.
And he did very well on therabbit.
And then reality sat in and I'mnot sure that he hit another,
uh, clay for, uh, for quite awhile.
But it was super fun.
I mean, just him looking overhis shoulder going, really, it
was, it was very thrilling.
How'd you do Not great.
Okay.
Not great.
I am very, uh, I am an avidendorse man, as I like to say,

(16:02):
as I know.
Yeah.
You know, he did do greatthough.
Did he?
He participated and helped usraise money.
That's Mike.
He looks at this guy.
That's what he does right there.
This guy.
He knows how to put a twist oneverything.
Yeah.
Roger's been around you for awhile.
He knows.
Yeah.
I've been around the block onceor twice in my 75 years.
Yeah.
And, uh, he did come downstairsand saw all of my exercise

(16:23):
equipment.
What did you call it?
Yeah, your, um.
Antiques or, or what did youcall'em?
Window dressing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Towel racks, towel.
There.
Are there, there, there havebeen clothes that have dried on
all of those, uh, all thoseitems.
Yep.
I'm sure there have.
Yeah.
But that's Roger, uh, deliveringsome brotherly love for us.
Yeah.
Well, I try and be nice once ina while.
That's terrific.
When do you, uh, when is thedeadline to sign up for?

(16:46):
What does it, say it one moretime?
The deadline.
CCC four, T-C-K-T-C-T.
Boy.
Yeah, that stutter really getsme.
CC 4K, TC.
deadline, The deadline will beMay 3rd.
Okay.
If you come, may, may, peoplecan come and show up and Yep.
Okay, cool.
Yep.
And they'll shoot a hundredbirds and a hundred clay birds

(17:11):
and have lunch, and there'll besilent auctions and live
auctions and, and where's it at?
Raffle games.
It's down.
At the Minnesota Horse and HuntClub in Pryor Lake.
Okay.
That was, this will be our 14thyear.
Yeah.
My bachelor party was there.
Is that right?
Yeah.
Sporting Clay is for my bad.
Wow.
My brother organized it.
Apparently.
He's a man too.
Saves a lot, mark.

(17:32):
Great.
There are hairy chest down here.
Not me.
I am smooth.
How many people do you get forthis?
Typically?
Last year we had 275 shooters.
Wow.
Yeah.
Oh, wow.
It split out over three courses.
I think they have four total outthere, right, Jeff?
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's been a while, but we usethree of'em and, and have their

(17:55):
inside ballroom, for lack of abetter term, to hold the rest of
the, the event.
Yeah.
They put together a pretty goodmeal there too.
Yeah, it's a nice burger barwith all the fixings and
everybody walks through and getswhat they need and.
Off they go.
Lots of taxidermy on the walls.
Oh yes.
Really?
Lots of taxidermy on the walls.
Yep.

(18:15):
And a few taxidermy.
One in Rome shooters.
After they're done, there's,there's a few that are, that are
probably eligible for taxidermy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
This'll be our 14th year, andover those 14 years we've raised
almost$450,000.
Wow.
Congratulations.
That's a impressive, wow.
That's great.
You know, that is great.
We're always looking for.

(18:37):
Sponsorships.
We, we have sponsorships thatrange from 250 to 15 to$20,000.
Um, we have a local sportsman'sclub up in the her, in the
Cambridge area that kicks in$15,000 to help us Wow.
Make this reality, you know, soMinnesota Masonic charities is

(18:59):
helping a little bit.
A little bit, just a little.
Just a little notably.
Notably.
That's great.
I think we're buying lunch inAustin, Peterson Construction
generally sponsors, you know, and they, they write a pretty
good check.
But, um, it, it's theindividuals that come out that
care about kids health and careabout kids.

(19:21):
So I just have to, uh, to alittle tribute to uh, uh, my
friend Roger here.
he's been a, a brother Mason ofmine for 20 years, uh, has been
a very good friend.
His wife Donna, we call herMadonna.
we traveled to Tucson rightbefore, uh, COVID.
Yep.
And, uh, we would go out fordinner and, uh, Roger and Donna,

(19:42):
me and Becky, and.
At one point, one of thewaitresses foolishly asked if
Roger and Donna were ourparents.
That did not sit well withDonna.
Roger was fine with it.
And Roger, if you see him, helooks like he's, uh, auditioning
for, uh, the next Des SantaClaus.
Four.
Um, he's got the full whitebeard and stuff.

(20:03):
But, um, if it's okay to talkabout the fact that, uh, you've
got Parkinson's Yeah, I do.
And coming down the stairs intoyour.
Into the dungeon sell.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was man cave.
Thank thanks to Steve.
I made it down without landingon my nose on top.
Well, we're hoping that you makeit back up because Yeah.
I may go on all fours.
Yeah.
That, that, that's one way to doit.

(20:24):
But, what I want to tell you isRoger is, still golfing.
Yep.
And he seems to be gettingbetter the longer he's had
Parkinson's.
Not kidding.
That's impressive.
Yeah.
Well, it impresses me well, because I'm pretty bad to begin
with.
No, it was only one way to goand that was up.
You have gotten a lot better andum, you know, when you've got

(20:45):
Parkinson's, you get thetremors, you get the shakes and.
I'll never forget, and I'm justgonna admit this on air, I
thought, how in the hell is hegonna put a golf ball on a tee?
You know?
'cause you got the tremors.
Yep.
Yeah.
Well he's got these tees, they're like martini, what do
you call'em?
Like martini tees or somethinglike that?
That, yeah, that's what theycall'em, martini tees.
And he just, oh yeah, I in.

(21:06):
Yep.
And uh, he hits the drive rightdown the middle every damn time
he hits the ball.
And, uh, about six feet.
But my favorite part is it goesfarther than six feet.
He's got this thing on the endof his putter that he doesn't
even have to bend over to pickup the ball.
Oh, the suction thing.
It's got a little suction thing.

(21:28):
So I got one for me.
Yes, of course you did.
I ordered one up.
I I went to a golf Galaxy and Isaid, you got one of those
things you can stick at the endof your putter to pick Oh yeah,
right over here.
They're typically forunbelievable people with
Parkinson's, but, uh, you know, you can hope Oh, don't hope for
bar.
I know, I know, I know.

(21:49):
But your, your bride is, uh, isa very, uh, strong advocate of
the Michael J.
Fox Foundation.
She is, she's also a very strongadvocate.
Of Minnesota Sonic Charit.
She is.
Indeed.
She is.
Absolutely.
Wow.
But, uh, I just want to thankyou for coming and if people are
looking for information,.
Well, they're welcome to checkout our website at clay's camps

(22:10):
for kids tc.org.
Clay's camps for kids tc.org.
Yeah.
We'll put it on the uh, Facebookpage as well.
We'll.
Yeah.
Okay.
We'll just make, put a link onthere.
And I, I did check it out.
It was cool.
Like great videos of kids and,you know, lots of shooting and
it's cool.
And so, well the event is onDerby Day, so I'm sure that
being that you're at the Horseand Hunt Club, the Kentucky

(22:32):
Derby will be on tv.
Maybe we can do some fundraisingaround, uh, some of the, uh, the
folks that are gonna be doingthe shooting, picking some
winners for the horse race.
So that's kind of a fun littletie in.
To the first Saturday in May forthis great event.
Yeah, maybe they'll come ridingthrough the course blowing the
fox hound.
So, by the way, Kevin, theKentucky Derby, when you go from

(22:54):
the masters to the KentuckyDerby, I mean this is your time
of the year hockey playoffs.
Yeah.
Spring is, it's pretty good.
You know, we start with the, uh,the high school hockey
tournament in March and then weroll right into the Masters and
now we've got the hockeyplayoffs.
Yeah, the Kentucky Derby isthat, that first Saturday in May
has always circled on mycalendar.

(23:14):
I'm, I'm hoping that the wildwill still be playing, so I can,
I can be doing, um, both, uh, myfavorite loves when it comes to
sports with hockey and horseracing.
But yeah, it's, uh, what just acouple weeks away.
Worlds are colliding.
Do you have a, uh, favorite forthe race yet?
Well, I think the, the bettingfavorite's gonna be a horse
named journalism.

(23:35):
He, he's been running out inCalifornia.
He is a really special horse,but in a 20 horse race, I, I
can't, you know, I can'tpublicly say bet the favorite.
I've got a horse namedSovereignty who, uh, is kind of
under the radar right now.
Eight 10 to one, uh, longtimetrainer, bill Mott.
he's a Hall of Famer.
I would keep an eye onsovereignty for the Derby if you

(23:55):
guys are gonna part taking anyrecreational activities that
day.
Sovereignty.
Got it.
By the way, our brides, Beckyand Chrissy were in Arizona and
came across a, uh, sports bookdown there, and they, uh, put
some money on a couple ofgolfers for the masters.
One of them being Rory McElroyat eight and a half to one.

(24:17):
Not a good price, but he won.
Well, tell, tell our listenersyour great line, because Chrissy
might still be laughing when,uh, when the, the screenshot
came in that they had hit theirmasters ticket outta Rory.
John with the wine of all winehere.
It's, well, the plan was, so wealso had Cory Connors, who was
at 85 to one, and Corey Connorswas in third place going into

(24:41):
Sunday.
And we thought, geez, at 85 toone, if we hit this one, yeah,
we are, uh, we're gonna go tosome fancy restaurants.
And I just said, it looks likeit's the, uh, the Culver's drive
through for the four of us, theRory Culver's.
What a great line.
No dessert though.
People.
No dessert.
No, no, no.
Uh, no concrete mixers for us.

(25:03):
That's okay.
It is, it's, it's always fun to,to, to cash one of those checks.
Just, uh, last question for you,kg.
I know you've got a big, uh,event with Devin Nikko.
Good for you.
Um, have you ever done sportingclays?
I have not, um, like you, Ispend more time indoors.

(25:25):
to the, uh, spot.
It's a beautiful, yeah.
It, uh, but I've never actuallydone any shooting.
Circle the first, uh, Saturdayin May twice.
Like you got an eagle and makeone of'em for you.
I like that idea.
There you go.
Make one of'em for the time.
I like that idea.
Circle it twice.
Kevin.
Will you be at, uh, theCanterbury Park?
Uh, for the Minnesota HorseExpo?

(25:46):
I just got tickets for that frommy daughter today.
There's a.
Uh, at Canterbury for all horseexpos.
When is the expo?
Uh, looks like it's April 25ththrough the 27th, so I, around

(26:08):
20 slotted me.
Uh, yeah, it's a, it's a coolthing and they've got a huge
expo center out the track, soit's a, it's a great spot to do
it.
They got you shaking hands andkissing babies and talking to
everybody.
We do the best we can.
We gotta, we gotta grow thegame, that's for sure.
Uh, incidentally, that voicethat you were hearing is Jeff

(26:28):
Hoffman and, uh, he is alistener to the podcast and in
the spirit of a Seinfeldreference, he brought a pair of
socks for me.
They got the junior mints.
Oh, the junior mens, who doesn'tlove the junior mens.
It's very refreshing.
Oh, it's very refreshing.
real quickly, Jeff's brother,Chris, was a good friend of mine

(26:51):
he was this entrepreneur, reallygood looking.
Always had the best hair in anyroom that he was ever in.
And Chris passed suddenly, almost 10 years ago now, which
is just incredible.
Chris was on the board of the,uh, the Indian Head Council Boy
Scouts.
And, uh, the whole Hoffmanfamily.
They're all Eagle Scouts.
Many generations of EagleScouts.

(27:13):
Their dad, it's Tim, right?
Um, to Tom is my dad, and thenTim is my, my dad, my uncle.
Anyways, Tom and Tim also verybig, uh, scouting supporters.
But, why are you here, Jeff?
What's, what's the, what, why,what happened?
Taking notes, you know, um, afriend of mine, Randy, who was
on the podcast, Randy, yep.

(27:33):
Uh, mentioned the podcast and,uh, I.
Wanted to tune in and I'm a bigfan of storytelling, so I was
listening to you guys, um, laughabout your lack of knowledge of
hunting.
I feel the same way when I'mlistening to your sports talk.
'cause I love, uh, the storiesbehind the sports and the
families that I.
Um, and, and the stories of thesacrifice that goes in.

(27:56):
I just, I couldn't tell you whatstats are.
I don't like follow the players, but I love the, in fact, my, my
favorite, uh, movie is Miracle.
Oh, and who's Oh, great pick.
Yeah.
And Kevin, I, I saw your 1985,uh, uh, when you won the, when
you won the state tournament, and maybe it was an interview
right after your, you won that, but.
Much younger, and so I love JimCraig.

(28:18):
Yeah.
I'm a, I'm a soccer goalie too,so I relate to the whole goalie
references and stuff, but I,anyway, I feel like I know you
guys.
Very cool.
'cause I've listened, I listenedto a few episodes and just love
the stories and the guestsyou've brought in.
Wait a second.
A few, there's a whole more than140 now.
Yeah, come on.
I'm, I'm gonna catch up.
I, I have to catch up.
Don't catch up.
That's right.
That's right.

(28:39):
But, uh, Jeff is, uh, is, uh,interested in, uh, doing a
podcast.
Why wouldn't you?
Everybody else has got one.
Mm-hmm.
Right.
We like to say that we're in thetop 300,000 podcasts for
downloads in the world.
So yeah, we really feel likewe're moving on up.
But, uh, thank you for coming.
Thank you for the, uh, thejunior men's.
You're welcome.
Before we shut it down.

(28:59):
We gotta find out about what'shappened with Johnny Clueless.
Well, to tie, to tie, Jeff, Jeffis a drummer.
I, I learned that when he camein here.
So we have the catch You were adrummer?
I was a drummer in my, uh, myhigh school band.
Mm-hmm.
The Rummage, kins, rummage Kinsplayed around here quite a bit.
Um, but yes, I was just gonnatell you, uh, I'm very excited
because we have like a wholebunch of shows gigs for us.

(29:21):
Do we call'em gigs?
We got'em show, we call em showsor gigs.
We call'em shows.
Okay.
Yeah.
Um.
For the first time, we have morethan one gig in a year.
So our first one starts out atthe dugout here in Monte on May
10th.
May 10th.
What time?
What time would we see you onstage?
Probably, uh, probably nineo'clock.
You know.
What is that late?
I think I'm gonna make it tothat.
Usually that is the night ofWine Fest, and we usually spend

(29:45):
the night in Minneapolis, butBecky leaves for some foreign
land.
On Sunday morning at like seveno'clock, so I said, well, come
on back.
We mean we Indianapolis.
Something like.
No.
Something fancy.
Oh.
Oh, Charlotte.
But I will, uh, I'll probably bein a tux, so that'll perfect.
Give you something to talkabout.
Walk in.

(30:05):
Mm-hmm.
We, we, so we have that.
I love it.
And we have a, a, a, an outdoorfestival in Hutchinson in July.
Um, and, uh, and a we're gonnabe playing at the red carpet.
The red carpet.
When is that show?
We haven't been there in 23years.
I saw that.
That was where we really gotstarted as a band.
It's, that was your dream toplay there.
I remember you had said that.
I had never heard make cloudmain stage.

(30:25):
That's awesome.
And, uh, so to return there,it's gonna be really exciting.
A lot of old, uh, alumni arecoming back and we've kind of
put the word out.
It's gonna be super, it's forour 40th, uh, anniversary of the
red carpet.
But there, but there's also, isn't like GB Leighton playing
there.
Yeah, it's a whole week in aband.
Uh, Tim Mahoney, GB Leighton,us, and a band called Flip, a
Cool hard rock band fromMinneapolis or Awesome, awesome
band.
And what, what night are youplaying?

(30:46):
We play Saturday night.
Get this.
Whoa.
From eight to nine 30.
Oh, they're gonna shut you down.
No, because this is the bandafter.
Yeah.
Flip plays.
That's the perfect time for ourband.
It's absolutely, it's time to goto bed by 10.
No, no.
Everyone will come up andeveryone's gonna stay in hotels
and we're gonna just paint thetown that night.
Very nice.
My kids are coming.
Our whole family's coming.
It's gonna be great.
So tell us about the groupies.

(31:09):
Do you think any of those gals, remember the gals from back in,
at the back in the days of thered carpet?
Do you think some are stillhanging out at the red carpet
waiting for your big return?
I'm sure they'll be there.
Yeah.
Old, old friends.
See it'll be, I, I'm, I'msincerely, I'm thinking about
getting a hotel room up there.
It's, it's really meaningful.
'cause that is really where weYeah.
Absolutely.
Became the band.
So I'm excited for that.
Did you ever play at WhiskeyJunction?

(31:31):
No.
We played the Cabos a lotthough.
You played the Cabos?
Okay.
Right next to that.
Yeah.
So is I, is Whiskey Junction, isthat closed now?
I think it's still going.
Okay.
I haven't been over there in alittle while, but I.
Um, Steve, a burning questionI've had.
Yeah, because it's one of myfavorite things on the podcast
is the theme music.
Is that you on guitar or is thatyour, uh, that's my song.
Yeah.
That's, I love it.
So the lead guitar is my guitarplayer, jj, he's really the

(31:51):
producer of that track, but heand I did that during COVID, um,
just, I sang in my, played theacoustic and sang in, uh, in my
microphone at my house, and hedid his stuff at his house and
we kind of brought it together.
So, yeah.
That's perfect.
It's got a great vibe.
Hey, would it be okay to, youknow how we usually.
That's the beginning of thesong.
Yeah.

(32:12):
And we play it at the very endof the podcast.
Would it be permissible to playjust a couple of, uh, a few of
the lyrics just to hear what a,a fun song it is?
Or do we have to clear thatwith, uh, well, to talk to my
people?
Oh, God, no.
We can for sure.
You can play it sometime.
It's, it's just, you know, it'ssuper fun.
It's a fun song.

(32:33):
It's a very fun song.
We actually don't play that.
But, but what I was also gonnasay is we have rehearsed for the
first time in a long time, what.
Uh, couple Sun.
It was the funnest time thatcame to my house and the band.
Some people haven't been to myhouse before and we sat down and
ran through a bunch of, we havesome new songs coming.
What?
And some old songs we revived.
So it's gonna be an all new kindvibe.
Do you do any covers?

(32:53):
We do some covers, yes.
Are you gonna do Tainted Love?
Yes.
That's one of our, that's one ofour favorites.
Yes.
And, uh, great song.
Some Tom, some Tom Petty songswe play and uh Okay.
You know, just little bits ofthings, but we're, we're pretty
much, uh, original, but it'sjust a rock and roll night.
It's fun.
It's a good vibe.
And what's that?
Up, up, up, up, up thing, thingyou do?
That's like a drink toast thatwe do.
Okay.
That's like a traditional, youdo it several times.

(33:14):
Well, by about the fifth time itgets a little exhausting.
Well, it's'cause you don'tdrink.
That's true.
I'm looking at, we sound betterafter every cheer.
I watch people and I thinkthey're having more fun than I
can probably handle.
It really is like a way to unitethe group together.
It's super fun.
It's, it's a fun, it'sridiculous.
But it started because it was a,it was a false drinking game we
did in college.

(33:35):
It was like a joke drinking gameand it became this thing.
I don't know how.
I dunno how it know moved intothat, but it's a fun shtick.
It's fun.
So I'm excited.
So I'm clueless.
You've got all kinds of shows.
Could this be the comeback?
Well, it's, it's something, it'sdefinitely a, a nice
revitalization and Can I ask ofthe band members, are there some
that are like, ah, I don't wantto do this?

(33:56):
I kinda of was, you know, we,we've been up and down for so
many years now, just playing ashow or two.
I think everyone's excited aboutthis.
That's very cool.
The fact, I mean, the fact thatit got everyone to get together
and we actually ran through oldsongs and is it all the original
band?
Or is it like the three of us?
My drummer Eric Guzzi and StaceyChua are, yeah, we are the, the
original members, jj, my, ourguitar player guy who's, he's

(34:18):
the newest member of the band, but he's been with us since
2000.
Oh, wow.
Um, but he's, he's like the, thepremier musician of the band
that guy's Amazing.
So sort like, like what happenedto the first We had two
different guitar players before.
Okay.
Um, Todd, Mr.
Todd Smith.
He just, he, he had, we startedtraveling a lot and it was a
little too much for him.
Um, he lives in Austin, Texas.

(34:38):
He's doing great.
And Scott Miller played with usfor most of the recordings we
did.
Okay.
And he moved back to, uh,California and then moved to
Portland.
So he just had enough of coldMinnesota.
He was a California guy.
Okay.
I don't wanna tour anymore, so,so they kinda went, we kind of
burned him out.
Yeah.
But Bill Wyman on the deal, theyjust left the band.
Yeah.
But married a 12-year-old and,but no, no, no, no.
None of that.
But JJ is just, he plays in alot of other groups and stuff.

(35:00):
He's one of those guys.
He's just, he's a good friendand he's like very talented guy.
That's kinda like his gig, isn'tit?
Well, Mr.
Musician, it, he plays a lot ofbands.
It's not his only job, but itcould be.
He's a producer too.
He's okay.
The guy's amazing.
He sings, he's got his own, he'sa songwriter and so I'm, I feel
like lucky to have him.
But do you ever have guestsingers up on the stage with

(35:21):
you?
We, we invite people up all thetime just to do little things,
mostly to embarrass them andmake them, you know, act silly.
Yes, that's a good idea.
Um, it's fun.
Kg.
Johnny, maybe we can get you tocome out to one of the, uh, the
Johnny Lewis coming programs gotfive.
They got five gigs.
Let's make it happen.
Yeah, we're gonna make it to agig.
Yeah.
I gotta the red leather at somepoint.
Yeah.
They're not leather and I mightnot wear'em well.

(35:44):
John said they were, and Ibelieve him, like the guy on the
cover of, uh, lover Boy.
Lover Boy.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
Mike Reno.
We always talk about him.
Mike Reno.
That's right.
Canadian.
Alright.
That's right.
Classic.
Look at that.
He's pulling out the CanadianMr.
Wikipedia over there.
We call him Jeff Wikipedia.
Well, they, the tariffs, youknow, you can't, uh, that's

(36:05):
true.
You can't listen to Loverboywithout Oh boy.
Thinking of the tariffs.
That's right.
Yeah.
Do we have to pay extra if wedownload those signs?
The tariff Guess I.
