Since the beginning of humanity,the rituals and spectacles of
being executed for criminal actions have thrived.
In the years of the ancient Sumerians, approximately 4500
BCE, they had written of the death penalty on the Sumerian
code of Oronamo. Although the time of the last
meal origins is unknown, some believe it could have started
with the Gladiators being fed huge meals before entering the

Colosseum. There are records of last meals
being given to wealthy inmates in England, sometimes feast and
partying with friends and family, and the hangman's meal
in Germany given to prisoners the night before they hanged.
Feasts were supposedly given to Aztecs who were in line to be
sacrificed for their gods. And may we not forget the Last
Supper, the last meal Jesus had with his apostles before he was

executed. And today executions are still
present in the industrialized democracies or last meals are
prevalent. However, as a society divided,
there is no way to deny our biological relationship with
food. This sparks the fascinations of
me and many others who see ultimate death paired with The
Last Meal, an oxymoron worth exploring, and On the Last
