(00:00):
(Auto-generated)Welcome to the Laughing Matters Podcast. I am W.S. Walker and you found me. And that's

(00:14):
good because boy do I have something to tell you. So what is the Laughing Matters Podcast
about? Well, 10 years ago on the school grounds of APSU, I made a massive discovery. You
see for centuries, one of the questions that the biggest brains in the business have thrown

(00:38):
their hats into the ring of has been the almost nebulous elusive answer to why is it that
we laugh? What is the purpose of humor? Why is who? And this one's a big one. Why is it
that something is funny? Now, admittedly, I was messing around with stand up and doing

(01:02):
a comedy podcast at the time, but it's a story. It's a whole story. And this discovery was
so massive that I wound up a student at APSU in the middle of a blizzard in 2011, walked

(01:23):
out with only the clothes on my back and a satchel with like two blank books in it. But
that's I'll explain all that. Walked out in the middle of a blizzard, no wallet, nothing
in my pockets and headed in the nearest direction. I don't know how better to put it. I struggled

(01:50):
with this knowledge for almost nine months, concerned that I had gone crazy because I
understood something to be absolutely true, but nobody had ever said it before. It made
complete sense. And every time I follow an aspect of it down the rabbit hole, I find
out new truths to other things and how it connects to these things. And it's a rabbit

(02:16):
hole, but it all makes sense. It all connects together and it all supports one another as
well as with the stuff that's all around you that you've known your whole life. It plugs
in perfectly. And as somebody who did quite a bit of time studying physics, if the math's
right, not to mention when I did talk to people about it and explained what I'd found, it

(02:47):
made sense to them. And it, well, you'll hear a quote from one of them in a moment here,
but it made sense. Anyways, I left out in the middle of that snowstorm in 2011. It's
now 10 years later and I am trying to tell the world what I found. Now, fair warning,

(03:14):
guys, this is not for the faint of heart because I found a lot more than why we laugh. And
also because a lot of it feels, so I'm told, and I'm trying to quote accurately, warmly,
unnervingly, specifically accurate. It is a pretty massive sledgehammer right to the

(03:38):
core of you when you learn some of this stuff, because it sheds light on an aspect of ourselves
that we don't like to look at. But if I haven't scared you off yet, if you're out there still
looking for answers, if you don't feel like you've completed your journey for understanding

(04:00):
the world and yourself, then yeah, welcome to the Laughing Matters podcast. Let's get
you some answers.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
