Welcome to the Lazy
Girl Library, the podcast, where
reading is a pleasure andcaptivating adventures happen
from the comfort of your couch.
I'm your host, darby, and I'mMikayla, and if you've ever
spent more time rearranging yourbookshelf than your priorities,
then you, my friend, are in theright place.
Boo, are you scared?
(00:31):
Oh, so scary.
Oh my gosh, happy spooky season.
Woo, halloween.
So this is kind of like alittle spinoff or maybe a book
blender episode again, but it'sHalloween themed.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
We love the spooky
season, big spooky girls.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yeah, so we wanted to
spend a whole episode just
talking about Halloween and kindof how it relates to some of
our favorite book characters,costumes, traditions.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Have some fun
discussions of like what ifs for
books and Halloween and it'llbe a fun time.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, and before we
get into it, we want to remind
you for next book club, book, book, talk book.
It is the X-Hex by ErinSterling.
So go ahead and read that thismonth so that you can listen to
us talk about it.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
I've already started
it.
It's super cute and it's greatfor Halloween.
Puts you right in the vibe.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yay, I bought it at
Barnes and Noble over the
weekend.
I'm excited to start it.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
It's a good one.
Let's get into it.
All right.
So I found this question online.
I'm not going to lie.
I looked up a lot of thesequestions.
I wish I was creative enough tocome up with them myself, but I
thought it was such a cute idea.
So, with them myself, but Ithought it was such a cute idea.
So what books haunt you themost?
We'll do like friendliest hauntand most frightening haunt
(01:50):
Haunt, meaning like what do youthink about all the time?
What's like on the brain thatwon't leave you alone.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Yeah, I will.
The word haunt.
I was a little confused aboutit first, but then I got it.
I like read your notes on itand was like okay, okay, um.
Well, spoiler alert, we bothhave the same friendliest haunt
um for me.
Well, I have two for me.
Throne of Glass is myfriendliest haunt um, it's just
brilliantly done and I thinkit's as close to a perfect
series as I think I'll ever readlike Agreed.
(02:23):
Yeah, I'm honestly just going toleave it at that.
It's like seemingly perfect, like it's so good and thought
out.
12 out of 10.
And there are so many charactersin there.
Yeah, I felt connected to justabout all of them.
So I'm thinking about themstill and, like it's just crazy,
I feel like there's so muchstory that could still be told
but at the same time, like itwas wrapped up so beautifully,
(02:45):
like I don't know.
Yeah, so I think about that onea lot.
And then the other one is theselection series by, I think,
kira Kass, kira Klass, maybe.
I think that's the author, um,but it was just like such a big
one for me in high school thatreally like hooked me, and I
even reread it a few years agofor a second time and it just
has so much nostalgia for me.
(03:06):
So I still think about that onea lot, just because it's just
one that was really big for mewhen I was younger and so I just
I like thinking about it.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
I remember I read the
first one Because of your
recommendation and it was areally cool concept.
I think I would have reallyenjoyed it.
I think I would have reallyenjoyed it if I found it in high
school.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
In high school, yeah,
when I reread it I was like
okay, definitely doesn't likehold up to what I've been
reading lately, but for the timebut.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
I see the vision
Absolutely.
Yeah, it was like it's verymuch like Bachelor meets like
Hunger Games.
Yeah, it's all about that vibe.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Yeah, so good, really
, really unique concept yeah,
and just like cute, and so thatone that those are my
friendliest haunts.
What about your friendliesthaunts?
Speaker 2 (03:46):
friendly, I mean
thrown a glass yeah you.
Just that is.
It haunts me night and day, morning, noon and night.
It's what I.
It is everything I always thinkabout the characters, whether
it's quotes that come up orsituations that they got
themselves in that I come backto myself like, thinking about
like how did Sarah come up withthis?
And all the connections comingback from like for book one all
(04:09):
the way to the last book.
Um, it just all consumes myever waking moments it is so
good it is so good and I cannotrecommend it enough.
Phenomenal, friendliest hauntfor sure, and there's like no
question, like that's it for me.
Yeah, but a frightening hauntthough.
(04:30):
There's this one book calledthe Night and Its Moon by Piper
CJ, and it is a personal one forme.
I'm not going to say it was abad book because, like it might
not have been.
I had to dnf it for veryspecific reasons.
Uh, I don't think like thestory in itself was bad or the
(04:52):
writing was horrible.
It wasn't great but it wasn'thorrible.
But it basically started talkingabout these.
Like the story is around thesetwo girls and when you meet them
they're really young andthey're in like an orphanage
kind of thing and they grow upand it she creates for, like the
first you know good section ofthe book, this like sister bond
(05:12):
between the two of them.
Um, so when I'm reading it is Ivery much like imagine myself
and my sister and like our bond, and I kind of like projected
that onto these characters.
Well, about a third the waythrough the book, all of a
sudden they do a complete 180and they go from sisters to like
lovers and like being in lovewith each other.
And I'm like you.
(05:33):
I just couldn't do it.
I couldn't, I could not get itlike I'm already having, like
the image of like you and me andmy sister in my brain reading
this.
I couldn't make that flip withher.
I know it's like been done andit doesn't bother me.
Before, where you do like youknow, brother, sister,
relationship, like friends tolovers, like that happens all
the time.
It's not an unusual, but forthis one specifically, just the
(05:53):
way I imagined it it was reallylike put yourself in it.
Yes it was too icky for me, Ihad to stop.
And now every time I see thebook, I just like get a little
shiver.
I'm like, no, I can't.
I can't think about it, it'sweird.
So that one's definitely mymost frightening haunt.
Yeah, what about you?
Speaker 1 (06:10):
so I'm kind of scared
to say this one, um, but this
is what I thought of.
So this is a hot take, but itwas the seven husbands of emma
and hugo interesting, like itwas written so well and it was
an incredible book, like greatbook, but I was really looking
forward to reading about sevendifferent husbands.
So I feel you it like it's it'snot a bad book, but just it's
(06:34):
frightening in the sense of likeI was like really excited for
you know like what the cover hadsaid seven different husbands,
like that's cool, like let'slearn about all seven of them.
And then it's a littledifferent expectations.
Yeah, yeah, I get that reallynot as like deeply frightening
as yours, but definitely likejust yeah, I don't know it's.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
It's disappointing
when you have the expectation of
one thing and, even though itcan be well done, it's just
completely different than yeah, yeah, totally different, but I I
will say it was still writtenwell, a good story.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
That just frightens
me that I had no idea.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, it was gonna be
different than what I thought
well, speaking of frightening, what plot twists have you read
that have been more like trickthan treat, not necessarily
great plot twist.
You're like oh, I love it, butmore like oh my gosh wait what?
Speaker 1 (07:27):
yeah, so, um a plot
twist for me that I was like oh,
came from the hunting wives, which was spoiler warning yes,
spoiler warning.
So, mikaela, we read this bookin our book club before we
started this podcast.
Mikaela didn't finish the book.
I did not Because the plottwist I would say was probably
(07:47):
tricky for you as well, but it'sa pretty like mid-book in my
opinion.
Some people might like it Withkind of poor writing, but
they're like constant.
It's these wives that are like, constantly cheating on their
husbands and and like gettingdrunk all the time, like
literally I think in everychapter, like the main character
(08:09):
is like having another drinkand it was just like a lot.
But the most plot twisty andicky part is that they're
cheating on their husbands likewith high school boys.
And it's just like weird, likeit's not.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
They're like 30.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Yeah, like none of it
is done well.
They're like 30 yeah, like noneof it is done well.
And even though they're 30,they probably have the maturity
of like us, like 20 year old, 19year old maybe, like it just
yeah yeah, that was an icky onetoo yeah, so it just wasn't
great.
I read it and like the ending Ican't even remember like the
full ending and I know there waslike some sort of resolution
(08:44):
and like there was another plottwist but again, I just was like
I couldn't get over the fact oflike girl put the bottle down
and like like give the boy hisLetterman jacket back, like here
you are.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, that if it.
If they were at least incollege, I feel like I could
have gone through it, butbecause it's a high school,
cheating with, like, eachother's husbands, like that.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Exactly this is weird
, I don't know.
So that was a little tricky forme.
No treats there, what?
Speaker 2 (09:12):
about you.
I agree with you on that one ummine is less a true plot twist
and more um me just playingmyself.
When I read this book, I feellike that happens kind of often
it really does.
Unfortunately I have not learnedmy lesson, but the book was
House of Salt and Sorrows byAaron A Craig.
(09:32):
I went in to this book.
It was supposed to be kind oflike a reimagining of the Twelve
Dancing Princesses, which I waslike, ooh interesting, I like
that, let's do it.
And I thought it was going tobe more like fantasy, dark
romance.
That was me that was my bad, itended up being a horror book.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Oh my God, Definitely
dark.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
I'm reading this and
it's just getting darker and
darker.
Luckily, it wasn't anythingintense Like I was still able to
like read it and enjoy it forwhat it was.
Yeah.
Anything intense like I wasstill able to like read it and
enjoy it for what it was yeah.
But I was just waiting for, like the, the romance to kick in
.
I was like I'm waiting and I'mlike all of a sudden I'm getting
to the very end of this book.
I'm like this is getting reallydeep and dark.
I'm like did I what?
What?
Speaker 1 (10:13):
did I pick up romance
at all?
There is a little bit, but notlike, not enough, not not to
call it a romance book or even adark romance when you said the
12 dancing princesses, my mindimmediately went to barbie yes,
I mean that's me imagine likethat's what I have in my head
going to read this book, liketurning into the upside down,
like it's just getting darkerand darker.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
It's like slowly
facing.
It's like one of those thatyou're like smiling as you're
reading and then slowly itstarts facing.
You're like wait, what's goingon?
I look it up and then sureenough, yeah, it's.
It's supposed to be a horrorbook.
Oh my god, do princesses die?
Um, I honestly don't remember.
I think so.
Yeah, a lot of people died.
I do remember that.
Um, it was well done.
I think I rated it like threestars by the end, but that was a
(10:56):
major plot twist for me it'snot what I was expecting.
That's so funny played myself onthat.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Wait, that's really,
they pulled a trick on you.
They did, they did, they didand, ironically, I think it was
around this time too that I readit.
So it all worked out anyway.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
So spooky season, but
yeah, that was definitely the
biggest trick on me.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
We didn't have this
written down, but I don't think
we're really into spooky stuff.
But are there any spooky booksthat you've ever read that
you've been really into?
Speaker 2 (11:23):
um, just that one
really.
I do enjoy the never afterseries by um emily mcintyre I
think that's her name, um, butshe does like the dark romance
retellings of like disneystories.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
I read that one
hooked um.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
I'm trying to
remember scarred are the two
that I've read.
I have a few others of her likewaiting to be read but I
wouldn't call those like spooky.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
I mean they're not,
they're more like dark romance
kind of thing they have likedarker themes.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
I feel like yeah, um,
I don't think I've ever read
like a true, like scary horrorbook no, I mean just the one,
and I wouldn't even reallyconsider that like a truly dark,
spooky, scary, because I don'tlike horror stuff at all.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
I'm the.
I was the child in elementaryschool.
Like I never have readgoosebumps yeah, I was told it
was scary.
I didn't.
I never read it yeah, it's not.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
It's not my vibe.
I always say that I'mdefinitely more of a mickey's
not so scary halloween partygirly than a halloween horror
night girly um, so yeah, thescariest one was house of salt
and sorrow, and even that onewasn't, yeah, horrible either.
I got lucky there, okay I wascurious.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
But what about you?
Did you have?
No, no, yeah, no, I haven't.
But like part of me is like no,never mind.
I was gonna say I was intrigued, but then I thought about it
for two more seconds and nevermind, I'm not intrigued, I don't
want any recommendations.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Moving on, moving on,
let's talk villains.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Who's the worst
villain?
Who's your favorite villain?
Give them to me.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Okay, so worst for me
, and I definitely it was like
hard for me to think about.
But maybe the villain in theCrescent City series Can't
really speak about this too muchbecause someone cough cough,
michaela hasn't read it all.
I'm sorry, I will get to it, Ipromise.
But yeah, I wish I coulddivulge further into my thoughts
(13:15):
on this one, but yeah, yeah,I'm just going to leave it there
.
I can't spoil anything forMichaela or the villain in the
Red Queen series.
Again, I don't like spoilanything for Miguel or the
villain in the Red Queen seriesAgain, I don't really want to
spoil things, but like he wasdecent but not great, like I
just wanted like more.
Like, when I talk about myfavorite or the best villain,
(13:38):
like they had so much, like theyjust had so much thought put
into things.
I don't like villains who arelike a villain because they've
like gone mad and then they'remaking like rash decisions, like
I like a villain who's like no,I'm thinking about torturing
you and I know why, and here'sthe backstory like like I don't
want a villain to be a villainjust because, like they like
they need like a purpose as avillain and trauma.
(14:00):
Yeah, and I feel like, though, the villain in the Red Queen
series like had like a reason tobe a villain, like it wasn't
enough and it wasn't utilizedwell, that makes sense.
So I would say that, for myworst, for my best again, I'm
echoing Michaela's thoughts.
So spoiler alert for who herbest villain is.
(14:20):
But it is Queen Maeve.
She's just iconic, I feel.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Yeah, so she did us
all dirty in um throne of glass
yeah, don't get me wrong, Ihated her while reading throne
of glass but like outsideperspective looking back, you
gotta respect the grind.
She knew what she wanted and intheory what she wanted wasn't
(14:45):
like world domination, she justwanted to get away from her
world and she was gonna dowhatever it takes to do that and
to live comfortably, and youknow I can respect that but to
to say some more stuff about her.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
Um, the blood bonds
make me sick and her cunningness
is crazy, like because you cansay, yeah, she's her.
Like what she wantednecessarily wasn't crazy, but
then the way she's doing thingsand running things, like no kind
of, I said, um, she's the chrischris kardashian of villains.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
I love that.
That is the perfect definitionfor her villains work hard, but
Maeve works harder.
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
That's perfect.
So do you have any morethoughts on Maeve being your
best villain?
I just think.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
I mean she was
causing harm, but she wasn't
causing like true harm, she justknew what she wanted.
I think Fenris would beg todiffer.
That's true, but you know, likeI said, it's outside
perspective.
Looking back, in the middle ofreading it, I'm like I hate her,
but on the outside I'm like Ikind of understand her.
You know, she just wants toprotect her peace.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
The part with gosh.
I haven't read it in a while, but the part with her and Dorian
right Aren't they have likesome scenes written together?
Speaker 2 (15:59):
With Maeve.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Yeah right, oh yeah,
yeah, yeah, yeah right, oh yeah,
that part.
I was like what the heck?
Like there's just some like, like we said, there are a lot of
characters in throne of glass.
She made her way around townlike she offended everyone, yeah
she was just a well-writtenvillain yeah, yeah, what about
your worst?
Who's your?
Speaker 2 (16:19):
um your worst villain
I had a really hard time
choosing a true villain, so Itook creative liberties.
Here it's the worst villain isauthor kristin hannah, for
putting me through the traumashe did with the nightingale.
Yeah, she lulled me into thisfalse sense of security, just to
(16:40):
leave me with a gaping hole inmy heart that I have still yet
to heal.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
So she's my true
villain, but I do love her books
but like, but it was written sowell, I'm okay with it oh yeah,
my heart is still gone fromthat part.
I like the way you took that.
I like the way you took that.
Um, I'm gonna start crying ifwe talk about her for too long.
Man, she really is a bully.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Moving on, I'm just
kidding incredible author.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
If you haven't read
the night nightingale, go read
it.
Then listen to our episode onit and cry with us.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Yes, phenomenal,
phenomenal, but you will be left
traumatized.
Uh, fair warning, but it's thebest kind of yeah a good trauma.
Yeah, you'll be recommendingthis trauma to your therapist
okay, um, this is where we get alittle fun.
So let's say, we're having abookish halloween party, um, and
(17:33):
all of your favorite charactersare invited.
What are is the like thesetting from a book you would
choose like to host the partyokay.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
So I really took this
like, so literally of like fall
, autumn, and so I chose theautumn court from the Court of
Thorns and Roses.
I love it Because I bet it'sjust, you know, picture perfect
of what you want fall and autumnto look like, gorgeous.
So that's my setting, minus theautumn king Eris can stay.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Eris, shout out you.
For me it was the bone quarterfrom Crescent City, but minus
all of the dead things trying tokill you.
Um, obviously, because we wantto have a good time.
Uh, if they promise not to killyou, you can they can be
invited.
That's fine.
But like we're all chill andhaving a good time and I think
it's spooky and fun and it'sstill like kind of close to the
(18:19):
city for you to get back homeand that's true.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
That's true.
I like, I like that answer.
All right, who are you invitingand what are your predictions
for how your fave characters aregoing to enjoy the party?
Speaker 2 (18:31):
so obviously all my
favorite characters are invited.
So everybody sergey, mass, um,but, and a few others sprinkled
in um.
But there's only two truecharacters that I care about at
this halloween party and that'dbe the surreal from akatar,
because I need to know the teaon everybody there, like I want
to know all the drama, I want toknow all the inside gossip for,
(18:55):
like, characters not related toakatar, like I want to know
what's going on at six of crowsclan I want the tea on me.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Who's my mate?
Speaker 2 (19:01):
I hope it's justin,
just like I want to know that
would be awkward if it wasn't,but yeah, I want to talk to them
, I want to get the.
I want to know all the gossipbetween all for all my favorite
characters that are like outsideof the sergio mass world.
That'd be nice, yeah, and also,I really want the bone dog from
nettle and bone by t kingfisher, because he's adorable and
(19:24):
spooky and he's just the goodestboy and I think he would bring
such a life to the party despitebeing dead.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Oh, my gosh.
I feel like he'd be a goodcuddler too, even though he's
just boned.
Those are good characters.
Thank you, those are reallygood.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
As far as what's
going on predictions for my
party, I definitely think thatCassian and Aelin would get into
a fight over far as like what'sgoing on predictions for my
party, I definitely think thatcassian and alen would get into
a fight over who has the bestcostume.
Um, meanwhile, jasper from sixof crows would actually win, but
because he stole the contest, not because he actually won,
because thieves, and that's justhow it works.
But that's that's kind of likemy predictions for how my party
(20:01):
would go okay about you?
Speaker 1 (20:02):
that sounds like a
fun party.
I would love an inviteabsolutely always invited thanks
so I want all my dark-hairedshadow boys to be there so I'm
talking reese, kai zayden, rain, lorkin, dorian um, and then the
only other females I reallythought of were that I the
females that I would want, therewould just be Ailyn and Elide,
(20:24):
um, and I think that would be it.
Those are the people that Iwant there, and I would love for
all the men to, you know, justbe giving me attention, but I
think all of the men would becompeting for Ailyn's attention,
and then Elide and I could justbe like talking on the side,
like watching it all go down andjust like seeing what they
would do I don't know.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
I feel like you'd get
their attention because I think
they'd get annoyed with ailyn.
Thank, you.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Well, unfortunately,
lorkin I mean they all, this is
all if they didn't have theirgirls, yeah, that would just be
like really, really fun.
Yeah, I really just took thisas a liberty to meet with the
boys, all the boys.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
I mean hey, they're
invited to my party too.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Yeah, no girls
allowed, just kidding.
But I think also it would likestart off as a halloween party
and I do think, though, becausethey're all like men, I think it
would turn into some sort oflike fighting ring competition,
like if we were to have like acostume contest, like the
(21:30):
contest would be like who canwin in this fight, or something
to be able to get it.
So that would just be fun towatch too.
Aylin Elad and I could justlike judge them their costumes.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
So it would be fun, I
love it.
What a time, good times.
If only this could be true.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
I know I hope I
dreamed about it tonight yes,
speaking of costumes thoughlet's get like personal, just
like talk about fun stuff.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Um so, halloween,
what was your favorite costume
you ever worn?
And then, what costumes do youdread seeing every year?
Speaker 1 (22:03):
okay.
So for some reason I was likeobsessed with this peacock
costume in high school.
Um, I wore it like multipletimes throughout like the years
of owning it, and it took likeit was a like a costume from
party city and it was obviouslylike a sexy peacock which like
(22:23):
what is that?
Yeah, but for some reason I wasobsessed with it.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
I love it.
And I mean, I still think it'skind of unique oh very, but it
fits the vibe of a peacock, because peacocks are all about
like showing off and struttingyour stuff, yeah, but it didn't
have like.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
So okay, let me try
and paint it for you.
So it was like a little black, like tutu type thing, and then
like a corset that had like kindof like the.
It was like black with likepeacocky blues, and then just
like a couple little feathers onlike the sternum area and it
was strapless.
And then you had like a littlechoker that had like one
singular peacock feather and,and then you had like a little
(23:07):
clip that went in your hair thatthen had a couple little
feathers sticking out so youdidn't have, like a full fan of
feathers.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
I'm imagining like
can can dancer, yes, kind of
thing yeah, similar to that.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
So I was obsessed
with that.
And then also, I think, reallyunique and weird, I was a sea
anemone one time.
What that means is I basicallyjust blew up a bunch of the long
balloons that you use forballoon animals and I just
attached them to my body and Iwas a sea anemone.
(23:35):
There was a lot of popping anda lot of shrieks from me getting
scared when the balloon popped.
When was this?
This was in college, um.
It was for like a fundraisingthing where you like dressed up
and then asked people fordonations and I took liberties
on being the weirdest persondressed up because I was going
(23:57):
to get the most attention andhopefully the most donations for
our fundraiser, um, which Ithink worked anywho, so smart.
Those are some of my faves.
I really love doing like funout there costumes.
Now that I'm looking back atthis, this is really funny
because for least favoritecostumes one of the ones I said
was sexy food slash animals anda peacock's an animal so I'm
(24:19):
really just played yourselfyeah, so I guess it depends on
the animal.
Peacocks are an exception.
I feel like that's a uniqueanimal, yeah, but typically when
it's like a sexy dog and thisis no hate like people look good
in all their like sexyhalloween costumes, so this is
just like.
Sometimes, though, when I seecertain like dogs, or like when
(24:42):
you're trying to make food looksexy, like they're just kind of
like a little weird and thenalso overdone like disney
characters.
They're just done so much, which, again, they're cute, so
like keep doing them, but it'sjust something that I see that
I'm like all right, this is.
I've seen this buzz light yearlike one piece, so often like
(25:04):
easy and people don't putthought into it yeah, so those
are probably my faves and leastfaves.
What about you?
Speaker 2 (25:10):
um favorites that
I've worn was a tie between one
year I think it was seventhgrade I was a pilot and I got to
wear my dad's old like flightsuit and his old flight helmet
and it was just like coolgetting got to wear my dad's old
like flight suit and his oldflight helmet and it was just
like cool getting like to wearthat, because you see him like
wearing it all every all thetime, like growing up, and so I
(25:33):
got to wear that and it wasreally comfortable too.
So like that was fun and likenostalgic for me.
But then the funniest one Ithink I did was in sixth grade.
I was a grandma where I likewore bathrobe and I put curlers
in my hair and I did like a facemask and I was just like acting
all grouchy and grumpy thewhole time.
So normal, honestly yeah, thatwas a fun one those do sound fun
(25:59):
.
I can like picture you in bothof them, like even right now
yeah those are cute I was alwaysmore of the like just trying to
find like funny fun, like typeof costumes.
Um, I don't know, like I neverlike doing, like the finding
things at spirit halloween, likeI always like kind of creating
my own costume, even if it wassomething you could find like.
(26:20):
One year I went as like pebbles, like I could have easily found
like a pebbles costume.
Yeah, it was a fun one.
I just cut my hair short thatyear too, so it's like even
better for like a little highpony.
But I could have made it easyon myself and just got in a
costume.
But I was like, no, I'm gonnabe unique and original and I'm
gonna make my own so and I madeit glow in the dark.
I love it.
So I love for Halloween likethat's what I always love to do
(26:42):
is finding fun stuff that Icould just do myself.
But that kind of leads into myleast favorite costumes.
I really don't like thestereotypical no-thought
costumes, so kind of like whatyou were saying.
with the animals.
You're dressing up as a blackcat, or when people do the witch
, or guys do Superman or agreaser.
(27:03):
It just requires zero thought, zero effort.
You're just like throwingsomething together which can be
fine depending on the situation, like if you're going to
something last minute, so youhave to throw something together
, but if you're like, trulyplanning on participating, it's
like put in some effort, make itoriginal it doesn't have to
like, make it your own like itdoesn't have to be original, but
like, make it your own wellit's like.
(27:24):
for me it doesn't even have tobe anything like extensive, like
people do like t-shirt costumesall the time.
I'm not even opposed to that ifyou're creative with it you
know Like I'm trying to think oflike an example.
(27:47):
I've seen where it's like anddogs but they have like the dogs
and the cats, yeah, yes, exactly the serial killer with
the cereal box and like theknife through it.
Like it's so simple as far aslike costume concern, but
there's like creativeness to it,there's thought behind it.
Yeah, that's what I appreciate,versus when you're just like
throwing something together andthere's no thought.
I'm like let's, let's put alittle fun into it.
Yeah, I get that, so that'swhere I get bored with it, but
(28:09):
that's just my opinion.
But obviously no hate to anybodywho does it again, just
opinions.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
I literally already
contradicted myself with an
animal, so everyone, you do youand you're gonna look great.
But another fun thing withcostumes what are some bookish
costume ideas that we could giveour listeners that are looking
for a fun and unique halloweencostume?
Speaker 2 (28:30):
so this one was a
little challenging for me to
think of, but kind of going offof, like the t-shirt, one that I
thought was kind of funny.
Yeah, I don't know how youwould do it.
Give me some time and maybewe'll put it on instagram as a
as a suggestion.
But if you did, like an endlesstbr where you wore a t-shirt
with like a bunch of books allover it, I feel like that's the
scariest thing for any reader tosee.
(28:52):
It's like the endless tbr.
There's not enough time to readall the books you want um.
So that was one that I thoughtwas like an easy, like bookish
one.
You could also do like a moregeneric like book worm, which I
think would be cute.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
That's really cute.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Oh my gosh, I love
that.
Um, and then I had to throw inthe cereal too.
Yeah, that's a good one.
I think that'd be a fun one.
It's kind of like spooky, butit's like fun and you can bring
a teacup and like make it andthe girls that get it, get it
absolutely so what about you?
Speaker 1 (29:21):
what are some ones
you're good, okay, one that I
think is like so fun and wouldbe like so, like hot is thera
under the mountain yes, so likeum, she, for those who don't
know, she's basically wearinglike these like silk things that
just cover the private parts.
So it's like not even like adress, but I feel like it could
(29:43):
be done really well.
I feel like it could be alittle scary if not done well,
but if done well, I feel likethat could be really like If you
drape it right and maybe add abelt or something to keep it
secure.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
Yeah, Think very like
Princess Leia.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Yes, slave Slave Leia
yes, slave.
Leia, like that kind of vibe, but I feel like it's also
ethereal.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
It's elevated.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
yes, Because I think
it's like shiny silk.
Yeah, I feel like that could bereally cool.
Honestly, any sort of leatherbodysuit could be used for most
female main characters, you'renot wrong.
So, pick who you want and youcan do that.
I was thinking because Irecently read Carvel and they
(30:31):
had some really like neatoutfits and extravagant dresses
that I think you could do coolcouples costume here and it's
not like a stereotypical, likeclown costume or like ringleader
Like.
I feel like this woulddefinitely take some more
thought and effort that I don'thave, but I feel like you could
get something from this book.
And then another couple'scostume that I thought could be
(30:52):
fun were the dragons from fourthwing so not like the people,
but the dragons yes
Speaker 2 (30:59):
and like that could
be cool because they had the guy
could be like all black.
Then you're in like the gold.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
Yeah, cute, yeah I
love that one actually.
No, I wasn't thinking of them,I was thinking of the all black
and then the blue.
Oh, true, true yeah that's, butthat's cute too.
You could do a whole family andthen the gold one could be the
kid.
Oh my god, adorable.
Okay, we even have familycostumes here book family.
That's perfect.
Yeah, add it to the list.
(31:25):
Yeah, so that's a good onethose are some of the ones I
thought of they're pretty fun.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
They are fun.
I like them.
All right, but let's talkhalloween traditions.
Did you have any fun halloweentraditions growing up?
Speaker 1 (31:37):
so probably my
biggest family halloween
tradition was watching disDisney Channel original movies
with my sister.
Iconic, yeah, so good.
All the Halloween towns,Twitches, Hocus, Pocus, Monster
Under the Bet.
I Don't Look Under the Bet.
Whatever the Boogeyman one isthat one.
(31:57):
The list just goes on and on.
If it was a disney channelhalloween movie, I've probably
seen it.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
I watched the heck
out of twitches.
That was my.
Really I love that one so much.
My sister and I would like takea.
Take a sister and like pretendto be them like pretend when
you're little.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
Also the one this one
isn't technically like
halloween, but it's still likespooky magic-y.
The one, um, with the girl fromally and aj, and it's like a
magician school or whatever.
I know exactly now.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
You see it or
something yeah, I think, or now
you see me, or something likeit's no wait no, that's the,
that's the other movie.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
That's the adult
movies.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
It's basically like
that, but for kids yes, I know
exactly what you're talkingabout, though.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
That one was also
spooky in a way, so I like that
one too, oh my gosh, that justunlocked a core memory in my
brain.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Yes, I used to love
that one.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
I watched it a couple
years ago.
I need to go back and watch itStill kind of slapped.
So definitely watching thosemovies and um, so definitely
watching those movies, um, andthen recently going to halloween
horror nights with justin.
So growing up I had gone tohalloween horror nights, but I
am not from orlando, so I wouldonly go once, like, and I'd get
(33:18):
just, I'd go one night and thendo as many houses as I can, or
I'd get like a fast pass so Icould do them all.
But what's crazy to me becauseI'm just not used to it because
I have never lived near themeparks is people that get
frequent fear passes, which isalmost like an annual pass to
Halloween Horror Nights.
So I'm like going to housesmultiple times now or like I'll
(33:40):
go to Halloween Horror Nightsand we'll do like two houses and
it's just crazy to me.
So I'm still getting used to it.
But it's a cute tradition thatlike we do now and I like doing
it.
Even though it's not just Justinand I.
We have other people therealmost every time, but it's fun.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
I like doing it.
That's awesome and it gives youlike a chance to pick up on
like new details.
I feel like and like up on likenew details.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
I feel like in, like
the houses.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
If you go and do it
multiple times, that you like
might have missed before.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
Yeah, and because
sometimes you'll go into a house
and you have like bad timing,so you like don't get scared at
all, and like they happen likeright before you or right after
you, so then it's like you, youdid, it's like a waste of a
house, almost.
So the more you do it likemaybe the better chance your
timing is in there, which isneat too.
Or because sometimes therecould be a shift change
(34:27):
happening while you're goingthrough the house and you just
don't know.
So those are things that Inever really noticed or realized
until then.
That makes sense, yeah, but Ialso think I'm getting a little,
um, maybe pretentious, like now.
I'm like looking at houses orlike the scare zones and I'm
like this is so not as good asblah, blah, blah, yeah, but I
mean they're all, they're all sogood and scary, right.
(34:48):
I'm definitely like picking upon more things now.
Sure, yeah, what about yourtraditions?
Speaker 2 (34:54):
um, so the big thing
that my family I told you about
this before, but we're gonnatell the pod.
Yeah, um is, my family used toalways watch like the disney
halloween sing-along.
It was like old, it was on vhs.
Um, they filmed it at thehaunted mansion in disneyland
and it's like only like one ofthose like half hour literally,
(35:14):
like just like the disneysing-along things you see all
the time.
Um, but it had this whole likestory that they're putting
together like this halloweenparty at the Haunted Mansion and
these three kids go to try tofind more decorations throughout
the mansion, but then they comeacross these different rooms
and then it would play the clipof the song from whatever's
going on, or whatever movie theypulled it from, or old Disney
(35:36):
shows, stuff like that.
And obviously we startedwatching this when I was young.
I was young, young like westarted watching this when I was
young, like I was young, youngwhen we started, but I watched
this every year through highschool like without fail,
because it just wasn't halloweenunless you like heard it for me
like that.
That was just like kind of thereally what like set the tone
(35:57):
for halloween yeah, um and thenobviously you move out.
You get really old and haven'treally old, really old almost 30
um.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
Yeah scary um to all
of our listeners that are over
30 years old.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
We know it's not that
scary you're young and
beautiful, um, but yeah, uh, Ihaven't watched it in a while
and then just last year, my mymom found a link on YouTube for
it and she sent it to me, sothat I made Josh sit there and
watch it with me.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
It made me so happy,
made my heart happy, I didn't
know he was singing along too.
He was.
It was a fun time.
That's so sweet.
That's one of my favorites.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
That's the longest
tradition that we have.
The other thing that we werereally um good about doing every
year, it was carving pumpkins.
This was definitely more of ame thing than it was my sister.
Um, we'd always start offtogether, but she hated like
getting the pumpkins and then,um, she tries her best.
(36:58):
I give you credit, abby, uh, butshe's not the sit down and
craft a type of person, so shejust kind of like would do
something simple and she'd belike all right, I'm done and
move on versus for me, I go thecomplete opposite end of the
spectrum, yeah, where I'm likeplanning and mapping out the
perfectionist absolutely exactlywhat I want, getting it just
thin enough and, like each yearI'd get more complex as I would
(37:20):
learn and grow and do things, and I love the like, the feeling
of the guts and everything.
I always thought that that waslike fun and like whatever
sensory thing that is.
Uh, so that was just always afun time and like trying to
think of like what I what?
Speaker 1 (37:34):
what can I do with a
pumpkin like how can I make it
like maybe we can post photos ofsome of your old pumpkin
carving stories on the stories.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
I'll have to go back
and find them.
But I did like a minion oneyear I was really proud of, or I
did like a tangled themed one?
Speaker 1 (37:50):
Do you have one
picked out for this year that
you're going to carve, or areyou still thinking?
Speaker 2 (37:53):
No.
Speaker 1 (37:53):
I'm still thinking.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
I haven't carved a
real pumpkin in the past couple
years because it's been hardwhen you're at college.
I was living in a sororityhouse, so there's really no
place to put it, um, and thenwith the apartment I was always
afraid of like animals, um, butwe're kind of in a good spot now
.
Last year we didn't carve realpumpkins but I found like fake
(38:14):
pumpkins that you could carve,so we did that, um, which is
like kind of like a nice play onthe tradition, uh, but this
year I do really want to find apumpkin to carve.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
So we'll be thinking,
but I'll let you know.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
Speaking of the fake
pumpkins, I saw this on TikTok
and it was fake pumpkins thatyou carved and you made like a
little fairy, like almost like adoor or something, oh cute.
And so people had like littlemoss coming out of it and like
they just made it so cool and Iwas like, okay, maybe I want to
do that.
Because I enjoy carvingpumpkins.
(38:51):
But like most crafts, I'm avery crafty person.
I love to do crafts, but a lotof things I do, I want them to
have like purpose and, I guess, longevity, and so it doesn't
have enough, like I don't getenough use out of it, sure.
So I I like can't justify itsometimes, um.
(39:12):
So I think maybe if I carvethat it's like more of a real
craft, right, so maybe I'll dothat no, I totally understand
that.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
That's kind of why I
got out of it now coming into
college, because at least forlike, when we're at home, we put
it out and you get to see itcoming home from school and
you're a trick-or-treater.
So yeah you actually got achance to light it up and for
other people to see it, versuslike in the apartment complex,
at least for mine, um, we reallydon't have anybody that comes
by, so I'll see it during theday, but I'm not seeing it at
(39:40):
night nobody else is seeing it.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
So I'm like is it
really worth the time and the
effort, seeing all the skill andeffort that you put in exactly
so I just definitely somethingI'm going to continue with my
kids.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
I'll definitely get
back into um, but I do want to
try to carve.
Maybe I'll do like a small oneor something this year um, just
because I do love it.
But no, I totally get the.
Not having a use for it and thelongevity of it does get
difficult.
Yeah so, but that's why I did.
It's really smart, because Idid find them last year at
target.
They started selling thehollowed out fake pumpkins for
(40:16):
that exact reason, for they'remeant for you.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
They're thin to, to
carve them, to keep year over
year.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
And then you can keep
them forever Cool.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
And so.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
Josh hates the
feeling of the carving pumpkin
inside and stuff Because he'smuch more like Particular.
He's just like a clean.
Oh, yeah, yeah, I don't want tosay clean, freak, but like, for
lack of a better term, cleanfreak than I am in terms of that
.
So it's like the textures andeverything.
It's like the textures andeverything.
(40:44):
He he hates that.
Um, so it's a nice thing thatwe could do together, because
it's like there was none of thatfor him, but then I still got
the tradition of carving thepumpkins, and so we had a good
time.
That's cute.
So for any listeners out there, check out target if you do want
longevity with a carved pumpkinbecause, those were really cool
yeah, and if you do make onetag us, you can inspire us.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
And if you use any of
our costume ideas, which you
should tag us too, because Ireally want to see or even if
you just have your own bookishcostume or just any costume, tag
us, because I really want tosee how you guys dress up from
what you do at lazy girl library.
Yeah, we want to see.
Yeah, well, I think that's kindof it for Halloween topics, but
(41:23):
let's talk about some borrowsand returns and end on a note of
books.
Sounds good.
What are you reading?
I'm surprising because I'vebeen crushing it, but I haven't.
I'm reading the same books thatI did last.
That's okay.
Yeah, no, that is okay.
They're both taking me a while.
Well, how to Win and InfluencePeople.
(41:43):
I think that's just forevergoing to be on there.
It's one of those you bit bybit, yeah, it's like, oh, I
totally forgot I had this andthen I pick it up.
So kind of reading that maybenot really it's on hold.
And then the Fate of the SunKing.
For some reason, I'm just likekind of slow into this.
I think it's because I'm notlike fully into the series but
like.
I want to know what happens, butI'm trying to get through that
(42:05):
book for returns.
I did finish the audiobooklife's too short by Abby Jimenez
, so it was good little instalovey but I liked it.
I've been.
I enjoy her book, so that wasgood.
I am struggling, though, tofind a new audiobook.
I tried like three differentones because I didn't want to do
(42:26):
another Abby Jimenez one, because I don't want to like
blow through them super quickly.
But I tried like threedifferent ones and there was
always something off.
Like one of them it was ugliesand because I wanted to watch or
read that before I watched themovie.
But then I was like, okay, thisdefinitely was meant for me to
read in middle school.
So then I stopped that one.
And then there was this otherone that I was really intrigued
(42:48):
by the story, but it was thisgirl talking in a British accent
and I was like I can't listento this.
It just wasn't good.
And then the other one I tried.
I knew I wasn't going to like,but it's a really popular book,
so I tried it anyways and I'mlike halfway into it, but I'm
(43:09):
like kind of not enjoying it.
Speaker 2 (43:10):
So if y'all have any
audiobook recommendations, let
me know because I will try them.
Yeah, that's hard to try tofind them.
Speaker 1 (43:15):
I know After you've
had such good luck.
Yeah, but that's what's goingon in my book reading world
currently.
What about you?
Speaker 2 (43:25):
I'm not reading a
whole lot right now either.
I am reading the X-Hex, whichis our book talk.
Speaker 1 (43:30):
I'm excited to start
that one.
Speaker 2 (43:31):
It is cute.
I'm really enjoying it so far.
It definitely is putting me inlike Halloween spirit I don't
know something about, like I'mnot a huge like Christmas
Hallmark person.
I'm not a huge like ChristmasHallmark person, but something
about like this cheesy, likeHallmarky type of movie books,
shows for Halloween specifically.
Speaker 1 (43:50):
Just get me going you
know, I completely agree really
.
I'm not a Hallmark gal whichthere's nothing wrong with
people who love Hallmark but Ijust can't do it.
But if it it's ball, that's adifferent story, Something about
the witch.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
maybe it's the Disney
Channel original movies growing
up that just kind of trigger mybrain in that way.
But anything like the rom-commy, like a Hallmark cheesy romance
that's Halloween themed, I livefor.
So this book is reallyscratching that itch for me and
it's really putting me in themood.
Speaker 1 (44:22):
I'm really excited to
talk about it.
So this book is reallyscratching that itch for me.
It's really putting me in themood.
Speaker 2 (44:23):
I'm really excited to
talk about it.
It's been really cute so far.
Once I finish that, I am goingto start the Harry Potter series
.
I talked about it last podcast.
So we're starting Harry Potterand the Sorcerer's Stone.
Staying on spooky theme, we'restaying within the realm of
witches and wizards.
I am excited to try this one.
(44:45):
I'm going in setting myexpectations more.
I don't want to say low, butlike knowing that this was meant
, like people were reading thisin like elementary school, like
middle school kind of thing andI know, as the books progress,
like after talking to friends, like it does like grow with you.
Yeah, but at least for thisfirst book I'm trying not to
(45:05):
judge the series too harshlyafter like first two to three,
because knowing like thedemographic it was meant for,
that's smart.
So all about the expectations, trying to set realistic ones for
myself, because that's how Iget myself in trouble.
So I'm excited to start that.
Um.
As far as returns, I did finisha conspiracy of kings by megan
(45:28):
whalen turner.
That is the fourth book in thequeen's thief series.
I gave it four stars.
Um, it was really interestingbecause all the books leading up
to this one so far have beenfrom like one character's kind
of perspective.
But this one flipped to anotherone that you hadn't seen since
the first book.
Like you're introduced to himin the first book and you hadn't
(45:49):
heard from him really since.
Interesting, um, and so it waskind of interesting to hear,
like from that side and how themain character kind of
influences the book, even thoughhe's not the main character of
the book, um, because he's theone that really become like is
like the master of the plottwists in this book.
That I love um, and she justdoes them so well it's so well
(46:14):
done.
I still think the third book ismy absolute favorite, um, but
this one is so, so good.
I have two left in the series.
I'll probably flip-flop betweenharry potter and that series
till I can finish it off.
Yeah, um, but that was reallygood and then I did have, uh,
agrippina, the mostextraordinary woman of the roman
world, by ms southland.
(46:35):
Um, that was a one star did notfinish for me.
I was really disappointed, because it's not that it was
written poorly.
I was doing it on audio and theconcept of it was really.
I've been reading books lately.
I know We've been having a hardtime.
The concept was interesting, but the author doesn't really
differentiate between thedifferent people like real
(47:00):
people that you're listening toand it's like Roman names.
So it's like roman names.
