(00:00):
Hi everybody, I'm Emily and I'm Vince and this is the lighthouse
(00:13):
So we don't have video dancing yeah for those of you who are not here
So our episode today is gonna be
pretty laid-back just a conversation Vince and I are gonna talk about our
Vacation we just took in Cape Cod and all the lighthouse as we saw
drive times
Pros and cons little recap yes, and
(00:38):
If you're traveling to Cape Cod, then this would be a good thing to listen to maybe get some suggestions or some warnings or something
Overall thoughts of Cape Cod
You want to go first you want me to?
You go ahead overall thoughts it was
Beautiful, but not what I expected geographically
larger more trees
(01:00):
Very expensive I felt poor there. We'll talk about that more yeah
People were really nice, and I hate to say that in that tone, but I was surprised
I've just never been to Boston never been to that area, so yeah, I know that
People who live over there think those are different areas to me. It's the same because it's so far from where I live
(01:21):
But people were nice both just other tourists were around in general
And then the people who are working up there and people we met that are not working but volunteer their time
Yeah, we're especially kind and I appreciated that yeah, I'm very helpful food was really good
As far as the place goes that's what I have to say is a quick thing okay, so what are your thoughts I would say
(01:44):
I'm right on the fence between whether or not I'd go back like it's not like a firm no, but it's not an excited yes
So right in the middle. I agree with the geographic thing
The main roads are all
Surrounded by trees, so you don't really feel like you're on a beach or like driving along
The Cape or anything so I think that was outside of my expectations
(02:06):
That I would see you the ocean as we were driving because we did a lot of driving. It's
it's like an hour from
like Dennis to Provincetown, so
driving but I
Would say the traffic's not that bad
But I would say the traffic's not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be people
(02:26):
Really talked about it being
Clogged but and we were there for the most popular
weekend
At least at least Provincetown
Yeah, and it wasn't
Wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking yeah, Boston sucked for traffic getting out getting out of Boston
(02:46):
Yeah
I'll just keep interjecting so I got to control myself. Yeah. No, it's good. It's we're just chatting
um, I took notes during our trip for our listeners just
Here and there just whenever we were doing stuff
I kind of they got worse and worse and quality as it went along because eventually I was like
I don't want to take like at the end of the day. I'm tired and I don't want to take notes
(03:09):
Then they get less and less good. Like I just finished notes for our last day
Handwritten too about yeah, two two hours ago
So so question, okay, you said you don't know if you would go again. Yeah, what about going for the first time?
Do you you don't regret the trip?
Not at all. Yeah, because we saw a lot of great lighthouses and um
(03:30):
Like the top half was my favorite and that was our first couple days. So we'll talk about it. But like I think
It's probably different. There's probably
I mean, I know there's very different experiences you can have but when we moved down to Dennis it felt disconnected like
It Provincetown was nice because you're have all these
Shops and it's very walkable and you can see the ocean no matter where you are
(03:54):
But then you you plunge into the you know base of the cape and it's all like lots of trees and
You know that everything's spread out. So I'm sure there's
Different experiences and we stayed in kind of like a resort heavy area which
Doesn't lend to understanding cape cod a little better. Sure
So I guess we'll just go into our trip. Well, we did
(04:18):
The experiences we had
So I made a little slideshow of pictures. Unfortunately, they're only the ones that I had on my phone because
Vince takes his nice camera and takes a lot of good pictures, but
Obviously we just got back so he hasn't had time to download them. Yeah
So the first thing we did I'll read for my notes our flight was at 1015 which was quite nice because
(04:41):
We usually take flights at like 6 a.m. So then we have to wake up at 3 30 and go there
and
We had a weird hold up at the delta bag drop that made us
like
we were still trying to just drop off our pre-tagged bag and
When boarding started, yeah
It was so stressful and we're like what is happening here?
(05:03):
And there was people going to detroit
Before us like that board five minutes before we do and they were ushered to the front of the line
Which pushed Vince and I even further back and I was full of rage. It was
Yeah, it wasn't a good beginning of a fun travel kansas. So we're in kansas city and we're flying kansas city direct to boston
Which is nice. It's direct about three-hour flight. I guess a little shorter anyways
(05:27):
Kansas city just built a new airport and it's a whole thing. I'll save
Emily's heard it too many times. I have a lot of complaints about our new
billion dollar I think was a billion dollars
airport
Anyways, that's one of the the things we spent an hour after
Pre-tagging a bag like you said, yeah paid for all we do is drop it off show my id. That's it our it was
(05:51):
Insane my feet hurt. I was wearing my new shoes new tiva shoes
But yeah, but luckily we made the flight. So yeah, we made the flight
So yeah, we did they they made it happen, but um
We had tsa pre-check so kind of rushed right through there, you know, we're fancy
Um, I put two and a half hour flight time. It says that it's three hours. Um, yeah, we're a little shorter
(06:14):
We beat it both ways. Yeah
But then we struggled a little bit to get to the enterprise because we couldn't find specifically
We were looking for an enterprise bus like if you come to kansas city, right?
There's an enterprise shuttle that you take or at least in airports i've been to there's it's a similar setup where they have one
Bus that goes to a building that has all the rentals in it
(06:34):
Okay
I've only ever been on an enterprise bus and then the other was when it's connected to the
Airport and you just go down to like the bottom floor. Yeah, those are nice
Yeah, so I didn't know that the um, the bus was a thing but we got on the 22 bus had jimmy johns in the airport
It's amazing really starting off our trip
Well exotic food dollars for sandwiches
(06:55):
So then the first thing we did was we got our rental car drove to the shipyard. Um
Do you remember the name of it?
Nope
Let's see if I can find it. It was uh, it's near the airport
funny enough
Yeah, very close
I ran into a curb right away
And wasn't charged for it. So while she's looking it up the curbs in the state of massachusetts
(07:19):
Oh my gosh
Are I swear to goodness they are 90 degree angles?
I don't know what they make that stone out of or what but like every single curb is this 90 degree sharp angle
And I as I pulled into a parking spot. I said i'm gonna hit this curb and then I did
um, so left like this
deep gouge in the
(07:41):
Hubcap of our rental car. We're like, um, so there you go
Is boston harbor shipyard in marina?
marina marina marina
marina sauce
What am I said marinara
Whatever do you want to take over?
Frano lens
So we went there first kind of walked through the park whatever park is there and we were meeting bob menino
(08:09):
Who is the president of the u.s. Lightship museum and
Owns the nantucket light ship so
Which was light vessel 112
Replaced 117 after it's sinking by the olympic and he talked a little about about that
but then so I got a private tour of the light ship and
We beat him there. So we got to hang out for a little while and enjoy the weather. It was quite nice
(08:32):
He gave us a lot of cool history, but I forgot my my little journal. So
It was kind of a shame. But yeah, we had a great time
He showed us all the inside and like the engine room and where they were
Like the engine room and where they ate where they cooked their their kitchen setup was actually phenomenal
I was very surprised by that. They I didn't think that they had it so good on a light ship. It's almost
(08:56):
like
Like it was nice. Yeah. Yeah, so we covered light ships including this one
I think it was this ship is actually on the cover of the the youtube art nantucket. Yeah, there's a couple nantucket ships
But anyways, um go watch that episode if you're interested to learn more
Um, but yeah, we'll have some more photos and whatnot being included. I'm sure as time goes on really cool and
(09:19):
Bob as well. We didn't have a
This wasn't like a standard tour where we showed up on time
We he came out to help us specifically and just for us. So that was really special. Appreciate that. It was really awesome
Had a great time. He let me ring the fog bell. That was pretty cool
I'm sure that's something they let the kids do on actual tours. I enjoyed it
(09:42):
It was awesome
Oh, we got our stamps there too. He reminded us that he's like you guys do that stamp thing
Yeah, that was a passport stamp. My first stamp is one for this light ship and he cut it out of
Sticker paper so it's nice because I just slapped it in there
Okay, so we left at 5 17 pm on a wednesday very specific, but we left the shipyard at that time
(10:05):
And the Sumner tunnel was backed up but not awful. I thought it was going to be like standstill traffic
But it wasn't bad. So anybody that goes around that time and i'm pretty sure at that weekend. It was closed, wasn't it?
And it was supposed to be really awful. There's a couple tunnels that are closed. I'm not really sure
And then the drive to Provincetown said two hours and 37 minutes ended up being about that
(10:28):
It wasn't more backed up than we thought it would be and actually
Driving at that time was pretty clear probably because it was a weekday
I was pushing it because we had dinner reservations at ocean 193
in
Provincetown at
Originally 7 30 I pushed it back to 8 30 and our arrival time said like 8 17 when we started driving and Vince was
(10:52):
I was going 20 plus over. Okay
Careful they're gonna come and arrest you
Uh-huh couldn't catch me
But um, I honestly it was about the speed of traffic, which is crazy to me
Very fast much faster than speed limit, which the speed limit's pretty low most of places that you go
But I mean, there's got to be a reason
(11:14):
Civil engineers out there
Yeah
uh
But that was uh, so are we jumping to dinner?
um
Yeah, I was just gonna say that past well fleet it started to get
pretty busy like car wise
Traffic roadways and it was probably because of the event that was happening
(11:36):
The next day that we had no idea that we had was happening. We were
Not unpleasantly but not pleasantly surprised to hear that there was a parade happening because Vince and I were just joking
right before this that
Every time we go somewhere
There's some huge event going on and we just happen to be going at the same time
And so then you know, there's no parking. It's backed up. We can't
(12:00):
Oh
Yeah, so so
We go to our uh hotel motel check in then we quickly get out of there
We're in the rental car
And those of you who know Provincetown P town, uh, you'll
Smile but I
We're going to ocean house 193. Is that what it's called? Ocean 193 ocean 193, which is fantastic. We'll get there
(12:24):
It was good. Yeah, but we're late or we're just barely gonna have time
Um, and i'm just following the gps. Just give me as close as I can and then i'll try to park
Is it commercial street? Is that what it's called? Yes. So commercial street
um
Technically you can drive a vehicle on it, but you should not no it is it's a walking area
(12:44):
Fully clogged. It's like if you were driving if you know pearl street in colorado in boulder. It's uh, it's now just walking
It used to be a street now. It's just for walking because so many people are walking there
Do on commercial street commercial street is basically the same except I was driving a car through crowds of people who are enjoying their nightlife
That was insane
And I was that that guy unfortunately, we saw a couple other of those guys and I think everybody does it once and then from then on
(13:09):
You just know don't drive on commercial street, especially at evening time. Yeah, so i'm like
Driving a car less than five miles per hour
Less than five miles per hour people are very upset that i'm there
Really? I didn't notice anyone. Oh, yeah
lots of negative looks lots of people like standing in the way like
What are you doing? Like trying to get out of here?
(13:31):
and i'm you know, i'm this
Big person in a little car trying to like navigate. Yeah. Anyways, emily helps me to find the parking lot. Yeah, I was at the um
Macmillan pier and after that it was fine. Yes, just walk you're cool. It was late enough
We only paid ten dollars instead of the usual thirty
Yeah, which is crazy for parking. That's insane. So
(13:51):
um
So we found our parking I called as is
Midwest custom to say that we were going to be five minutes late to our reservation
And brett who we assume is the owner. I think he's the owner seems like an owner
Yeah, he seemed very hands-on involved in anyone who came through the doors, which was nice
But he answered and was like we have never had anybody called to say that they're going to be late for their reservation. I was like
(14:14):
I think that must be a kansas. I don't know. He was super nice
He checked on us a couple times throughout the night
It was nice because it was like he was happy to see us even though he has no idea who we are super host
Yes, those are the best kind of hosts. So we're enjoying our dinner
We're sitting there and i'm like
Do you notice anything?
I was like, I don't want to be the one who says something off color
(14:37):
But I was the only woman in that restaurant except for one host. I think yeah except for like a server, but
I was the only i'm in an exaggeration
I was the only woman in there and we were getting some weird looks when we came in too and I was like what what what?
What is it? I was wearing a lighthouse cardigan. So I was like, maybe I look like an idiot or no
Getting some weird looks there was lots of very fit people people with wonderful haircuts people with cool style. Yeah, and
(15:04):
I googled
Is provincetown gay?
I think I had it saved somewhere but like google's answer, you know ai. Yeah, it's like provincetown is one of the most
Travel friendly
Locations for lgbtqia plus yes, and I was like, okay
And I showed her the screen and I want you everyone is listening who knows me at least that's not it's not an issue
(15:28):
I I love everybody. I went to school at ku. I'm not against any
Any identities but I was surprised because I just didn't see that coming and nobody warned us either bob
When we're doing our light ship tour was like
Oh provincetown I like that. He said that that place is circus. You'll see when you get there something like that
(15:50):
Yeah, okay like cool. It's like oh I heard it's gonna be busy parade
Well, and I assume
I assume
Circus so the event I believe is called carnival carnival parade or something. It was renaissance
And rebellion it was everything it was and everything in between we saw some awesome outfits
(16:10):
But the costumes we had no idea and it was so well, i'm sure i'm jumping on our own storyline, but the next day was carnival
And it was madness. Apparently it's the most busy day of the year the most busy weekend of the year
For provincetown potentially all of tip cod um, and we had accidentally randomly chosen
(16:30):
That weekend to pay pay for hotel and that day
What are the odds that we pick the one day where there's this crazy parade going on and we couldn't really move it to anywhere else
Because we were gonna walk across the breakwater
see wood end and long point and
Then we were gonna walk across the breakwater
Wood end and long point and then we were gonna eat lunch there
(16:54):
And then we couldn't really end up in provincetown much after that
so it was kind of like this was our one day in provincetown, but it added a lot of flavor because
The streets were just packed full of people which it added as much flavor as a gay parade
We didn't we weren't planning on
Getting anywhere fast and so it was nice because we just got to people watch like
(17:17):
The outfits everybody is so nice to each other. Everyone's talking. It was a great feeling honestly. It was so fun to just
Witness like all the camaraderie. This is dumb, but I was telling vince about
Uh how I went to a dnd podcast live show. What is dnd for those who don't know dungeons and dragons? It's pretty popular which is a
(17:39):
Game tabletop. Yep
Rp. Some of our listeners may not know so okay. Well, I listen to a podcast called
Not another dnd podcast
and I went to one of their live shows and I went with my sister who's not into that at all, but she
Graciously decided to go with me because it was my birthday and I was on crutches at this time. I forgot about that. Wow
(18:02):
um, but it was just so much fun to be in a room full
Of people that were interested in the exact same very specific thing that you were interested in
and we all get the jokes and we all like
Uh understand each other and like I saw that same kind of thing happening at the parade, but all in provincetown was just
(18:23):
Really fun. Yeah. Yeah, everyone was there everyone knew about the event
I would say 95 of the people and then you saw like a couple harley guys roll through
And I don't some of them were there for it. Some of them were accidentally there you could tell. Uh, they just looked
Uncomfortable
Um, they were trying to get out of there
I don't get that. I I didn't witness anything
(18:45):
Aggressive or negative? Um
Lots of jockstrap
Which is shocking. Well, yeah, that was kind of aggressive in a way
If you weren't expecting to see mostly nude people then it would be shocking. Yeah, but it was um
It was a good
feeling among
But everyone was excited which was nice wasn't uh, there wasn't any children really very few children
(19:08):
um, which
You know kind of an adult's forwarded place. Yeah
Um, I would be curious to see provincetown
Not during that weekend
I bet it's similar
but
We got a very different feeling when we moved to denisport. That was our second motel right and all of a sudden
um
(19:30):
What's the word? So socio socio-economically?
Uh by appearance and by behavior everybody was very different. Maybe that's why I didn't like it as much is because of the whiplash like super
fun bright and loud and then all of a sudden we were in just resort town that people were nice in denisport
Oh, no, not not about the people but just like the general feel was so different that I don't think I was
(19:54):
Clicking right? Yeah, provincetown doesn't have any chain restaurants
No, like you wouldn't survive as far as we know. We're from can well the area I saw
And and you're right. I don't know all the chains for sure, but like all the coffee shops were local or at least appeared local
Yeah, no starbucks stuff like that. So I really enjoyed that environment. I could I could hang out there again
(20:20):
Oh, I made a note in here tomorrow. We will plan to take the cape cod transit authority
That's funny
Yeah, what happened there?
So our plan was actually to take the bus system and not a car
Especially after we drove onto car commercial street and we're like, oh this is not a place you and we were driving
(20:42):
There too passing tons of people on bikes and we're like, oh my god
There's so many people on bikes
It is chaos because nobody should be driving towards commercial street in a car
so
We had some hints there that we shouldn't be driving but uh, so we decided that we would be taking the bus the next morning
(21:04):
So we walked to the bus stop which
Online everywhere you look says it's at the seagull motel
And so we walked there and we don't see a sign anywhere that says bus stop and i'm like well it says
Is the bus stop it shows as like inside the parking lot for seagull motel. It did you're right?
Yeah, so I was like, we'll just hang out here. I ran across the street
(21:24):
So vincent and I were flanking the main street. Yeah, I was on one side just in case
Yeah, she was on the other side just in case and then we see the bus coming
um, and I run across the street because I just
I just had a feeling that the bus stop was supposed to be over there and this guy in the bus
Us makes eye contact with us and holds it the entire time. He passes us by and leaves us fine
(21:47):
Didn't touch those brakes
We just stared at him in dead silence as he went by and we're like
I'm standing there like an asshole with a ball cap on we've got our backpack. We got our trekking pants. Yeah
Trekking pants. Yeah, I looked like a like a
I don't know
Anyways, they drove right past us
(22:08):
and so we just started walking back to the hotel luckily is only five minute walk from our motel but um
we just got in our car and drove back to Provincetown and
Happened to find a pretty good spot right outside of the entrance to the dyke. So
That was fine. But we find out later on the way home that the bus stop is actually outside of
(22:31):
The blue sea motor in where we were staying where we were staying all we had to do was look with our eyes
And see this bus stop. I think that's how we found it. Actually is I saw the sign
No, it was and there was people waiting to go to the oh, yeah parade
So Vince and I actually missed the parade, but we saw everything up. We left right at three, which is when it started
We saw enough so we saw
(22:53):
The pre-parade stuff like lots of people celebrating and showing off their outfits. Did you see that photo?
I took of just the crowd walking after lobster pot. I didn't I was gonna add it and I forgot so
I don't worry about it. Just suffice to say there was like non-stop crowds
Yeah, that was middle of the day. Mm-hmm before I think parade was three three to something three three to six. Yeah
(23:17):
I pulled up a picture
Of commercial street those crabs look so good. Yeah, the crabs made me sad soft shell crab
I don't know if I've mentioned it on the podcast yet, but I really love crabs
I just love them. I think they're so cute and scuttly and
Just their tall eyeballs
And so I ordered crab not realizing they would be whole and so I got them and it was like hard to eat them
(23:41):
Because they were they were actual crap. They were like they just took and this you may laugh at us, but we're from Kansas
Yeah, we don't know they took the whole crab and threw it in a fryer. Yeah battered it
It's intact and there's what two or three of them two of them. Yeah, man is delicious
They were so good, but I I just couldn't get over it. I was like, I don't the thing is like
(24:03):
I don't want to see him dead. I want to see him alive
But it was delicious very good and the drinks were good too probably the best
In my opinion the best we had on the trip
We had a lot of good cocktails. Also had really good cocktails. I was surprised by Beachcomber
I really liked mine
I really liked mine. It was some type of sunrise type of thing. Anyways, yeah, lots of good cocktails very fruity
(24:29):
I didn't see a good old-fashioned anywhere. No, there was one um at ocean house, but it had some weird some
Unique ingredients that made it not like quite
Not so attractive to somebody who enjoys old-fashions in the first place
um, so yeah, we just kind of walked around and
The next day is when we decided to do our dyke hike
(24:49):
So this is where we got to see a couple of lighthouses for the first time on the trip jumping riprap to riprap
Uh, I got a little bit
crippled
emotionally
Spiritually, I don't know the word my
my will to go on was very shaky because I kind of especially like in these photos it looks like
(25:14):
The stones are very even and you're just kind of walking stepping across them, but they're
The top is several
square feet and they're tilted in all different directions and maybe it starts off pretty easy and ends like
This picture is kind of in the starts and ends easy
Yeah, in the middle is where it gets really choppy and Vince had to come and rescue me a couple times because I'm locked up
(25:39):
In the middle of our in the middle of a rock and he would have to come in like help
Yeah, i'm i'm pretty well, i'm excited about hiking. I've done it
um growing up a lot and I I kind of smiled because when I saw this on paper like the plan
It was like hiking. Oh, this is gonna be we're not even gonna sweat and then um joke was on me
(26:01):
I was wearing pants and should not have been and I was wearing tennis shoes
I really think hiking boots are appropriate for the rock
Maybe changing once you're across but
You know it starts easy, which is nice if you just want to take a couple steps out and then come home
And it ends easy because it's back on land
But the middle there were some points where you're right even i'm six foot five and i've hiked my whole life
(26:24):
Yeah, I was thinking about I actually don't know the best path right here. I kind of have to go between things and yeah
Um, anyways, it was fun. I do recommend it. I just recommend going lightweight
On your gear and take good shoes. It's not if you have any handicap or any soreness or anything
I would just wouldn't do it any mobility problems and that that's what I was thinking too is I might have been more sure-footed
(26:45):
But I I think I have a little
Fear instilled in me from breaking my foot a couple years ago
And so I just don't feel as stable on my feet even though I know I am
I I don't trust my feet as much as I used to because I was on flat ground when I broke it
So what about rocks? But it was pretty cool. We went at low tide and so it was basically surrounded by sand
(27:07):
Tons of birds who used the rocks to break open their clamps. So that's pretty cool. That was cool. We got
I don't even get any good pictures or videos of that
But they would go up a couple of feet and drop them because they understood
That the rocks are not level so if they went too high up
They would lose their clams like in the cracks because these rocks are huge. So the cracks, of course
(27:28):
are enormous, um
So that was fun to see we got to see a lot of birds and and they were very friendly and we could get
Within a rock of them before they would be like, oh I better I better leave. Yeah, they're used to people. Yeah
So once we got out there to what it's is there a name for the island where wood end is that and uh
(27:51):
What's the other lighthouse? Uh, it's long point that that's the area
The tip of the very very tip of cape cod is long point
We're on sand
Which
It's not very clear
It's not it's not like a well traveled path in my opinion what you would expect
Anyway, um where you get to the end of the breakwater and it kind of continues for a little while
(28:12):
But there's sand and there's brush and it's not clear where to get down and start making your way to the lighthouse because
you could
Go along the sand like right when you get off the breakwater to your right
There's a stretch of sand. It's basically a beach that in or goes towards the lighthouse
But you'd have to climb a sand dune covered in brush and we're wary of ticks right now. So
(28:36):
That's why we were wearing our long pants. I was wearing sandals and then I changed into tennis shoes, which was a good move, but
So we had to find the path. It's called
Jeep path or something. I can't remember
I read a blog about it before this um, it showed up on google maps. It did not apple maps
Okay, so you saw the path? Yeah, okay
(28:56):
And so it kind of winds around like you you have to trust it as you're walking
It'll take you from one side of the point to the other side and then curve back towards the lighthouse
But there's lots of like wild
brush and
Flowers and like lots of bees. That's one thing I noticed
There's tons of bees out there which is fine with me
(29:20):
But if there were wasps, we'd have a big problem
Well, this is kind of embarrassing to say but I find it interesting at this point as soon as we get to longpoint
I'm worried about you. I'm worried about your feet because you're starting to lose skin. I was worried about your ankle
That's been broken. Oh yeah, I got some blisters. They were brand new shoes. What was I thinking?
On top of it. I am not in the best shape right now
(29:43):
I'm 28. So I'm surprised by that, but I was warm
We only had one bottle of water. It was like this is we're not going to be stranded and die
But it's also not like a walk in the park. It's so funny because I had no idea you were uncomfortable
I was like living my best life
Looking at seashows. I was a little hot but I wasn't sweating or anything
(30:06):
So and I had new pants that were very breathable
I wish I knew the name of them but they were on Amazon highly recommend. They were amazing
But yeah, I had no idea that that you were even hot. Well, it's like I say it's embarrassing
I mean look at the pictures. We're like literally walking on a path
Standing in the shade
That was hard if you if you have any sort of ankle pain
(30:28):
Oh my hip by the time we finished this walk was really hurting. I'm still feeling it
It's been a week since we got back and my back was really sore
It's been a week since we got back and my back. Oh
it this
Was a struggle a lot of its mentality though
Because if I thought it was going to be harder that I would have not had that it was like
I thought this was going to be a walk and now I'm like sweaty. Yeah, you know
(30:52):
I this was exactly what I expected. So I'm glad I read about it beforehand
Maybe that's why I didn't really perceive it to be like it was it was very difficult and I was I felt it for
A long time after that, but it was worth going. It was enjoyable. I liked it
And for those of you who are turned away by this stuff this talk you can get there on a ferry
Oh, yeah, you don't have to make by that's how we made it back. If we had to walk all the way back
(31:17):
I don't think I would have made it like my back I was
Becoming crippled we walked I think three miles on the beach
Yeah, three miles on the beach and then it was about a mile over
The breakwater part of it that made it harder on us was you wanted to see all the seashells and walk right by the water
So and I wanted to be with you. So I was down there too. You're blaming it on me. Well just
(31:38):
Tactically the closer you are to the water the steeper it is
And so your right leg is extending lower than your left leg, which is probably why your hips of course
I mean, I understand that
I'm telling
Telling everyone who's listening to me. So the first stop was at wood end it is
Just a cute little white square tower
(32:00):
Owned by the Coast Guard. I'm a lot of the lighthouses on cape cotter owned by the Coast Guard and
Run by them, but these this was not one that you
Can visit or is any sort of good shape? So we kind of approached it and
It's beat up. It was kind of sad, but it used to have a
attempt at a front door
(32:22):
And I don't know if it was the weather or if it was humans or something
I think it's people
but it was beat in and um, like even the like makeshift wooden
Door frame they had was broken off and the door was like in half and there's all kinds of trash in there
Which is just like come on. Yeah, I it looks like I'm walking in. I actually didn't go inside. I just looked inside
(32:44):
We just peeked took some pictures
to be honest with you if it was
Looking like it was in better shape even though the sign said do not go inside
I was tempted to go in and climb because it would have been cool
But the the I have no idea how old the steel is. I'm not supposed to be there later on
We did run into park rangers. Uh-huh
So they're trying to keep people from doing stuff like that
(33:04):
But yeah people have ruined this with I described to Vince what it would be like if we were to fall through
A step and he said you know what?
It's not worth it. Yeah, that would not be okay
Yeah, I mean even just like 20 feet in the air. Yeah falling through
And all kinds of crap on the bottom where people just toss their stuff and
Half of a door splintered and oh was there an old door in there like a metal door
(33:28):
Yeah, because you took a picture something that I never saw
I don't know if it was in the oil house because the oil house was the oil house is full of stuff, too
And then we saw as we're leaving this I have pictures on my camera a fox. Oh, yeah on the island
We were like I said, there's an animal
I couldn't tell what it was, but he was like that's a fox
I don't know how I got there
(33:50):
I don't know how I got there. Does anyone does it go on the rocks?
I'm sure did it swim in the ocean? There's a way that you can get to the point. Um, where you're just walking on sand
That's likely it's a longer way than
I'm surprised it got out there and stayed out there. I'm sure
At low tide, it's all sand. It's the water recedes really far. So i'm sure he could run across there in no time
(34:14):
I was surprised
Yeah
Wish we had that picture. He was scraggly but cute. Well, we will have it eventually but
So then we started our walk we we chose the um
the outer
Of a beach of the point and started walking
And a lot of it you weren't allowed to have dogs at that point until the end of our walk when the park rangers came
(34:37):
Along and collected all the no dog signs so that that must have been the official end of some nesting bird
Yeah bird nesting season. So
We saw them picking up those signs, which was kind of cool. They drove by on their what is it? Go? Um,
ATVs four-wheelers
Go carts, um
They're bumper cars
Okay
(34:58):
side by side
No, so we did our walk saw a lot of
some kind of
String I have a picture of it up some kind of green
Green stuff clinging to seashells. I don't know if it's some kind of kelp or
Seaweed or something. I don't know seaweed. It's always in shells
(35:21):
Yeah, I assume it comes from dead organic material grows in it like a mushroom
And we saw some anemones. I took a picture of that. We saw seals, which was awesome
They had little pods, um off the beach and they watched us the whole way like oh, what is this? Yeah
Yeah, if this was like i'm kind of scared they were big
There was like nine of them. Yeah, and some of them like disappeared under the water and were like, oh shit
(35:45):
Oh, they're also like 20 feet away
Yeah, gonna have to get the fist fight with a seal
They're pretty slow so they killed bin laden what oh my gosh you're the worst
Oh we forgot
our night before we went to
(36:07):
The aquarium marketplace and got really good salted caramel ice cream and a crepe from the store
I can't remember what it was called. I didn't make a note across from Connie's
Yes across from Connie's coffee whatever it's called, but
Oh, they and they messed up my crepe and Vince went back and they just gave me
Uh, I i'm an i'm a nutella hater. I can't help it
(36:31):
I hate nutella and it was nutella instead of cream cheese and so Vince went and they were really nice about it and just got
Me the correct one and it was really enjoyable. Just got to sit in their little
Adirondack chairs. It's nice. See I gotta keep I gotta keep looking at my notes. We don't fall behind
Okay
(36:54):
Yeah, we even skipped our breakfast our in my opinion the best
Breakfast sandwich i'd ever had was really good relish
It was packed very long line, but they're super efficient and they make the sandwiches right out there like cracking eggs and stuff. I just
It's refreshing whenever we live
Somewhere where it's like all starbucks and duncan and stuff. Yep
(37:16):
So we we went in there just got a couple of breakfast sandwiches. Um, I got an egg and cheese on a croissant
What did you get sausage egg and cheese? Oh, it's really good. It was legit slightly runny egg, which
I used to hate but now it's so
good
Amazing
So anyway that we did that before we started walking across the um, breakwater
(37:36):
I probably probably didn't help honestly. Yeah. Well because then you had to poop
I didn't though never did
You got really scared. I was like what if I have to use the bathroom out here?
Which is not something I usually say yeah, I'm usually good for the good for the trek. This is family
He's described what good travelers are like. Yeah, and they're just like they just don't have to stop
(37:58):
They're just won't stop for hours. They have amazing control over their
Bowel
Yeah, I don't know. I can't relate
Uh, which has made us a struggling
traveling duo that I have so many more traveling requirements and fences like
Super easy going like we'll stop in three hours
(38:18):
Like how about 20 minutes? I used to drive
to my dad's house
Um six and a half hours or so. I think it was and I would stop once or not at all
What?
No, I was a teenager, you know to be fair. I'm getting better
I hope you take notice. Well, don't harm yourself. You don't have to get better. Gosh, but it's just become
(38:40):
It's coming easier to me to not have to stop to use the restroom
So we made it to the other lighthouse
We did a little dance. We did we had the struggle
Walking over sand saw lots of cool stuff. I picked up some
Quahog shells. Quahog
Those are in our sink right now. I'm gonna I'm gonna make something with all the fun shells that I collected
(39:03):
so
I think that was pretty much it and so we made it to long point
There was only a couple people on the beach. Yes. We we did our clips for the
US lhs dance competition. The entry is now closed and september 7th. They're doing their lighthouse
us lhs
You know
(39:24):
Extravaganza you think we're gonna win
I don't know
Jeremy said he really liked we have a chance. There is a chance. There's always a chance. So those of you don't know
Celebrating united states lighthouse society
anniversary
Is that right? I want to say yes 40th. I think 40th. So there's a there's a big event on september 7th online. You can register
(39:49):
register and be a part of it, but also
there's an ongoing thing to to dance in front of a lighthouse light ship or
lighthouse related stuff
to a song
Which is chronically in my head now
Meet me at the lighthouse
Gets it gets in your head
(40:10):
Yeah, it gets it gets in your head
Pass the time
So we were singing it just trudging across the sand on long point just
Because we're crazy just baking in the sun
I was trying so hard to have fun
Just sweating down my back. I had no idea you were suffering
(40:32):
It just cracked me up that I was just like blissfully unaware that that was a
Not an amazing time for Emily kept stopping and looking at shells. Oh, look at this and I run off
I was too tired. Oh my gosh. I was too tired to go back
So like an 80 year old I would just wait for you to catch up and then I would keep walking
(40:53):
So
Uh, I didn't even notice anyways, so we did our dance
We recorded at all these lighthouses and long point was in a little bit better shape than wooden
And they're they're almost identical. I would say it's closed up at least but yeah, the door was on so
less
Of the elements getting in elements including
Trash humans. Oh
(41:14):
You know what? I mean throwing trash humans humans that leave their trash, right?
Um got a good clip of Vince dancing
So there was a couple people out there and that's the very tip is where the fairy
Comes to pick you up. It's shuttle. Um
Long point shuttle
I just pulled up a photo. We'll get to it
(41:37):
So it's red. It's pretty obvious
It just comes over stops right on the beach and just puts down a ramp and you get on
Really nice 20 bucks for one way. So it's pretty expensive unless you live there and then i'm pretty sure it's like 15
or it's
like 20 for
Uh, like two-way. Yeah
So it was a good choice. So it was a good choice. It was a good choice. It was a good choice. Yeah
(42:02):
Uh, yeah
We did 20 one way I think yeah, it was 21 way for non
Residence it's it's fine. It's town. It was worth it. Oh
Oh, yeah, not having to do that again made it worth it. We saw some wildlife. We saw a humpback whale
It was huge. I didn't see it because as soon as we,
(42:25):
I was, remember I'm sweating my
Tits off.
My, my dyke hike off.
And, and I, I had this hat.
We made custom hats for the trip.
There'll be future swag for you all.
Yeah.
But I had this hat and I was like,
my only survival was this hat and I kept wiping my brow
(42:48):
and eventually I wiped sunscreen into my eyes.
I'm sure I did.
And as soon as we were on the ferry,
moving air across my eyes,
cause I had these sunglasses didn't cover.
They're not like sport glasses.
They're just, it starts burning.
And I've had the feeling before and I'm a pansy.
So I'm like, I'm crying.
Just trying to rinse my eyes out with nature's skill.
(43:09):
And they're like, Oh, a whale.
And I'm like trying to watch, trying to focus my eyes.
All I see is a big thing.
And then it goes down and then we saw it again.
And then it went down recording to the captain.
He said it was a deep dive, which is cool.
I didn't see it.
I saw some shapes.
So we get that's I I'm sorry I've interrupted,
(43:31):
but we get to the dock.
Thank you.
You know, they help us off.
I don't even know who I walked by,
but I dropped a bottle of empty bottle of water.
Anyways, got that off the dock.
And then I told Emily,
I said we're about to make a memory.
I took a bottle of water and just drenched my eyes
(43:52):
with it.
So just pouring water in front of a bunch of people.
We're just enjoying the peer.
They're all like, well, it's so nice outside.
We get back from just our hellish hike
through the wilderness.
Pouring water on my face, trying to rinse my eyes out.
And it worked pretty well, honestly.
It was immediate, right?
And then right after that,
I took a picture of Emily on this nice chair
(44:13):
right at the dock.
Full of buoys.
And then someone says,
do you guys want a picture together?
Sure.
And you can see in the photo,
I've got water just poured down my shirt.
Eyes are just sunken in.
My face is all red.
Absolute suffering.
So at least we were aware a memory was gonna be made.
That's fun.
I thought it was fun.
(44:35):
Emily was just happy and comfortable the whole time.
Wow, look at the whale.
I cannot believe I just was so disconnected
from your feelings.
Like usually I'm really in tune with you.
And I'm like, what's happening?
What's going on?
But I was just living it up.
Try not to ruin it for you.
We also found our love rock on this walk.
Yeah, whatever that means.
We have a love rock now.
I don't know why.
(44:55):
A rock that we call our love rock.
It's just, it's very pretty.
It's blue.
It's got light blue, tan, and navy blue stripes.
Some natural rock, I don't know.
But I just picked it up
and over the course of our walk,
we decided it was our love rock.
Found some lots of cool rocks.
And that's another interesting thing.
Within the side that's not facing the ocean of the Cape
(45:19):
is very rocky.
The sand is like coarse.
I think I took it.
Yeah, heavy, very coarse.
Ooh, coarse sand.
Yeah, it just.
Almost rocks.
Pebbles, basically.
Almost like river rock.
Like where you can brush them off
and they all, like they're big enough
that it's not sand. They don't stick.
Don't get into crevices and stuff,
which was kind of nice,
but it was painful to lay down on
(45:40):
or like walk on,
because it's like walking on rocks.
So I thought that was kind of interesting.
Interesting.
So right after our walk,
we decided we were gonna eat at the lobster pot.
And by this point, it was pretty busy.
I was looking forward to it so much.
Oh, so good.
The wait was like 25 minutes,
but you just put it,
that you just give them your phone number
and they text you whenever it's time.
(46:01):
Yeah, they did a great job.
Yeah, so we kind of walked around
and just looked at t-shirts,
did some browsing,
did some people watching.
And then we got called in.
And this place, the front is almost like a facade
because you keep walking and all the way,
it's this very long building.
You walk by everyone in the kitchen who's cooking
(46:21):
and then come out on the other side
and the side facing the ocean
with all these windows and everything
is where the actual dining area is.
This is the restaurant I said,
like we're watching a super well run restaurant.
Is that right? Yes.
Okay.
Well oiled machine.
Talk after you're done.
So we both decided to get lobster rolls
because we heard that this was the place
(46:42):
to get lobster rolls,
which is just like a hot dog,
but it's all lobster.
And we were seeing lots of signs
while we were driving in from the airport that said,
Cape Cod's best lobster roll,
voted award winning lobster roll.
All over the place though.
All over, yeah.
So we were like, how are we gonna pick one?
And this one had no frills.
It was just lobster in a slice of toast basically
(47:05):
that was like toast on both sides.
White toast.
And they just give you some butter, just pour on top.
Yeah, clarified butter.
I tried potato salad,
even though I usually don't like it.
And I also didn't like it.
I was telling him it's very much like Texas potato salad,
which has a lot of mustard in it.
So Vince doesn't like mustard.
So obviously that didn't work out,
but their fries were amazing.
I don't know if it was just because we went through
(47:28):
a tough like workout basically.
Well, I've never had lobster on its own.
I've had like lobster, mac and cheese.
I might have, but it's has been so long ago now that I-
This is a pure example of what I think
of what lobster is on its own steamed.
There was no seasoning on it that I'm aware of.
Nothing.
You get clarified butter you could put on or not,
(47:49):
but it was a hot there.
Apparently cold is totally different.
We ordered hot.
It was really good.
But I was fascinated.
Certainly I had a bottle of Coke or a glass of Coke.
That was incredible.
The way they set us up when we first approached,
they took our phone number and put us in line.
The way that we were guided to the back,
(48:09):
we had someone's name to refer to when we got to the desk.
They sat us right away.
They were ready.
The waitress was excellent.
The kitchen, we got to walk through the kitchen basically.
And you see live and fresh lobster.
The guy was making clam chowder.
Full of lobster when you first walk in,
where they're like pulling from.
(48:30):
And it was, I watched them clean,
like a table between seatings.
Everything was really well done.
And I was like, the manager here is crushing it.
Everyone's well trained.
Which really makes a nice experience.
It was something that we've seen
with basically all of the servers in Cape Cod.
Every time we went somewhere, they were happy.
(48:51):
At least they were acting happy.
Yeah, exactly.
It was believable.
It was for us.
Great meal though.
Honestly, a great lunch.
Yeah.
So good.
We went to the lobster pot.
And we saw another, there's another lobster pot.
There's a to go, like an express.
Yeah, just like a counter.
Which I think is what I saw
whenever I said we should go there.
But we went to the sit down one,
which I'm really glad about.
(49:12):
We didn't need to be rushed anywhere after our trekking.
Yeah, maybe this is actually a chain.
It's like red lobster.
We're just like, you've never heard of it.
Yeah, we're like, this is the best.
What was your cocktail?
Bourbon, right?
I can't remember.
Oh yes, it was a Kentucky iced tea.
Yeah.
Very good.
She said, what did she say whenever I ordered it?
(49:33):
You go girl, or something like that.
Get it girl.
I was like, oh, it must be strong.
Most of my traveling is just eating.
I just travel.
And I'm adopting that now.
I used to, I'm not very food adventurous.
I have a fear of food poisoning and everything.
And so I'm not, usually I would stick
to just ordering exactly what I know.
(49:53):
But now that I've been dating you,
I've been branching out.
Like it started in Spain.
I started to get a little adventurous
and now I'm almost there.
Paella was fantastic.
Oh, it was so good.
My friend's wedding.
She had, it was like a welcome party
for all the people who came all the way
from the United States.
Incredible.
Her family lives in Spain.
(50:14):
And they made these giant like walks, basically.
They're huge.
Giant pans of paella.
And it was just.
Like four feet across.
Yeah.
Tons of them.
They just kept coming.
Oh, so good.
And there was some kind of soup with it.
I thought it was delicious.
Cold soup.
Can't remember.
(50:35):
So good.
Let's see.
Hang on.
Let me catch up in my notes.
Oh yeah, here we go.
Turkey iced tea.
Oh, we also split a cup of their clam chowder.
And this is where Vince discovered that.
So I love clam chowder.
Yes, but you like it to be thick.
You said like mashed potatoes.
(50:56):
Like mashed potatoes.
Which to me is what I think of
when I think of the word chowder.
A chowder is a thick scoop.
You chow on it.
Where this, it was, all of them were good.
We tried like four or five different places.
All of them were good.
Almost all of them were really thin.
Not water.
We had it at Ocean 193.
(51:18):
And this is where Vince said it's not the same
as what he had on the West Coast.
Or what he's used to.
But it was good.
But it was delicious.
I think I like it runnier.
Really?
Yeah, I like the East Coast clam chowder.
And I haven't had that many clam chowders.
But I'm thinking of a place, my grandma,
she used to live in Ventura, California.
(51:39):
North of LA.
Roughly an hour, I think.
Santa Barbara, Oxnard.
Anyways, Andrea's is on the pier there in Ventura.
And it's a seafood place we always go.
It's not formal, but it's super good.
And their clam chowder is what I think of,
because I've had it so many times,
and what I grew up going there to visit.
(52:00):
And it's very thick.
Not quite mashed potatoes.
But just more mashed potatoes and gravy.
Mashed potatoes and gravy.
And anyways, so a lot of this on Cape Cod was thinner.
And it was just different.
It was good.
Yeah.
We had it at Lobster Pot as well.
Very good.
You can get mugs, souvenir mugs,
(52:22):
to get your chowder in.
And we also split calamari.
Calamari here is really good too.
We had it a couple times, I thought.
We did.
Much obviously, much better than Kansas City.
We're just.
We spent a lot of money on food.
I think, I was texting a buddy of mine,
he's a big foodie, Jackson.
And it was four days in, out of the five,
(52:46):
that we had our first meal that was under $100.
Yes.
Now, I'm not counting breakfast,
we didn't really eat breakfast.
And I was saying, this was the trip of
egg and cheese croissants,
because I had it at least three times, maybe four.
And those were $15?
10, 15?
I mean, I was, it was a $30 breakfast.
I mean, not most people who were listening,
(53:06):
I don't know most people.
Some people might think that's hilarious.
But around here, you know.
Yeah, you get it from like six, seven dollars
for a breakfast.
Our cost of things is just low, I think,
compared to out, you know, Boston, Cape God.
So delicious.
All of them.
Cocktails are regularly $16.
We kept getting them.
(53:26):
What were we thinking?
Here, you know, eight, $10 would be a cocktail.
Sometimes 12 at a nicer spot.
Even downtown, yeah, 12.
But, I mean, we kept getting them.
My opinion, and this is a reckless way to act,
so I don't recommend it, but I'm a spoiled boy.
I grew up going traveling and my parents spoiled us.
(53:48):
So I'm like, well, we're already on vacation.
I might as well eat this food that I want,
or this drink that I want.
Let's get an appetizer.
Let's get a cup of soup.
You know, you don't need these things, of course,
and I'm sure I gained weight.
But my mentality is just, well, I'm already all in.
I'm gonna make the most of being here
because I don't get to travel that much in my mind.
(54:11):
But in a different mindset, in the same situation,
you could say, I'm gonna really enjoy one thing.
I don't need all these things.
It's all gonna be, you know, and I could save some money.
We went in with an all-in mentality
where we were just gonna eat whatever we wanted
and we were gonna buy whatever we wanted.
We didn't do anything crazy.
No, but it was definitely.
(54:33):
One nice dinner.
Yeah, well, one exceptional.
One fancy dinner, yeah.
One exceptionally nice dinner.
The rest of them were just, we spent over $100.
And it was because we just kept getting cocktails.
We always got appetizers.
And every time we're like, what is this bill?
Where do you think it came from?
Yeah, but to be fair, you know, even where we live,
if we went to restaurants that we're excited about,
(54:56):
and we do, we each have a drink and an appetizer.
Yeah, we'll get up there.
But 60, 70, 80, 90, I see often when we're on dates.
Over 100 is not so often.
Especially not for like a lunch.
Yeah, well, and of course I always say all that
that I have to say, we're in no coast USA.
(55:16):
It's, you know.
Very different.
I like it here.
But one of the reasons I like it here is that it's
a balance of interests and costs.
And it allows us to make a trip like this.
Part of our budget.
Anyways.
So after this, we were gonna take the bus
that leaves from the pier and goes to the start
of the dyke hike, which was like at province land in
(55:38):
or something, where we saw people doing a yoga class
and you can rent kayak and stuff.
Oh yeah.
It's pretty cool.
But we saw that the bus was gonna take 34 minutes
and we could walk there in 26.
So we just decided to bite the bullet.
And it meant that we could walk through all the people
that were getting ready for the parade,
which was gonna happen in 30 minutes.
It was worth seeing.
It was worth seeing all of the costumes
(56:00):
and the outfits and stuff.
I saw some crazy heels
while we were walking through that crowd.
I saw a lot of things.
How do people walk in those things?
I saw a man who looked like Popeye, like to scale.
Older?
Older guy, ripped.
I can't even remember this.
Definitely on drugs.
Okay.
Like performance enhancing drugs.
(56:21):
Dude was Jack, no shirt of course.
Had the right cap and glasses on.
He's the whole thing.
I saw a bunch of guys.
We saw a son and all of its planets was a group of people.
I love that.
There was another group of guys
who were all portrait paintings.
They were all dressed up as paintings.
Very well done.
And then there were the lights for the rest of it.
So just their heads were showing through.
It was pretty cool.
(56:42):
Nones.
Nones.
There was lots of workers that they would dress up
like mechanics or.
Yeah, a lot of those.
I thought that was cool.
Yeah, popped collars and such.
Yeah.
There was a welder, a mechanic.
Yeah.
Saw some strippers up on a stage.
Oh yeah, at one of the casual lunch places.
(57:05):
That place, I forget what it's called.
Vince was like, oh my God.
There was very little clothing happening.
Every time we walked by there,
except for that one time, I was like,
ooh, I like the setting of this place.
Like a big outdoor patio.
I was like, this would be nice to eat here.
And then we walked by and it was like.
Very different 3 p.m. than I'm used to.
(57:26):
Than you would expect.
Be me at the lighthouse.
This is coming up later.
So we went back, took a little rest.
We checked out the private beach for the Blue Sea Motor Inn,
which had the rocky sand.
Vince dug a hole.
We both got sunburned.
Oh, and then we decided to go to Beachcomber for dinner,
(57:47):
which I had great reviews.
Though some people said that it's not as good
as it used to be.
Like they've been going there every year
and it's just like kind of getting less and less.
And it's probably because the increase
of people that are going.
I'm sure it's.
The volume.
Yeah, more people visiting
makes it harder to keep up with good quality.
(58:08):
And that's something we noticed that I didn't like so much
about this place is that they use disposable everything
like cups, plates, silverware menus, everything.
And you could see workers going back and forth
from the dumpster constantly.
And it was just like, ah, man, you just know how much.
Everything was geared towards efficiency.
(58:31):
Didn't give a shit.
Sorry for the curse, but didn't care at all
about and I'm not an environmental nut,
but just fairly conscious person.
Even the table was, this is not related to the environment,
but the table was a folding table.
Yeah.
Like a temporary table.
(58:52):
I think the whole place is just, it's like a,
this is not meant to be derogatory, but in college,
there's some bars that were just coated with paint
and epoxy.
And at the end of the night, they'd literally spray
down the bar with like a fire hose.
What college did you go to?
KU, Rock Chalk.
And people, you know, because people would spill drinks
all night and people would stomp around.
(59:13):
It was disgusting.
So like at a bar where it's just chaos like that,
shots and plastic cups and stuff,
it just makes sense to have a place you can spray down
like it's a ship.
Just everything's waterproof.
This place wasn't like that.
This place wasn't like that, but it's on the way there
as far as a restaurant.
We gotta, we gotta move people through.
We gotta get mozzarella sticks out the door.
(59:35):
Yeah, high turnover.
Even the cups for cocktails were plastic.
I don't know.
I did enjoy it.
It's a fantastic setting.
Beautiful view.
The food was not bad.
Really cool decor.
Food was good.
Drinks were very expensive for how small they were,
but they were good.
The outside of this place was incredible.
(59:57):
The walk over to the edge of this cliff,
it's like full of clay.
So the sand is super orange
and this was our first time being on the outside,
like ocean side of the Cape.
And so the sand was very soft and fluffy.
But you have to go down a sand ramp
in order to get to the beach.
And it is pretty far down there.
And I just wanted to say,
this ramp will try to break your ankles.
(01:00:19):
Okay, let it be known that this is not an easy,
the kids are running, they make it look easy.
It's not, okay.
I'm telling you as a 26 year old who has a bad ankle,
it was rough and very slow goings.
But getting down is easy and the water receded a lot.
And so it was fun to watch all the,
(01:00:40):
I remember it was very pretty.
And the sky was beautiful.
It was just a great place to end the night visually.
And then we both had the worst sunburns on our necks.
So one place we missed with sunscreen
while we were doing our walk, all of our outdoor stuff,
and we just got charred only on our necks.
(01:01:01):
Some background about this place.
It used to be the Cahoon Hollow light saving station,
which is why we went there.
Life saving, light saving station.
Which is why we went there in the first place,
because I saw that it had some history,
but they didn't really capitalize on that too much.
It's, you couldn't really tell
that it had anything to do with that.
There might've been a sign somewhere that we missed,
(01:01:21):
but they didn't make it part of the place's identity
or anything like that.
So.
Yeah, that's interesting they didn't.
I know, well, as lighthouse people,
we really wanna, we would expect people
to capitalize on something like that,
but if nobody thinks it's cool, then.
So this place was super energetic.
Food was good.
(01:01:41):
I had the fish witch, and Vince had fish and chips.
That's classic Midwestern move we got going on there.
Yeah, and the mozzarella sticks.
Yeah, can't forget that.
That was a class move.
Actually, that sandwich was really good.
I don't think I have any complaints about that sandwich.
It was delicious.
(01:02:01):
You had coleslaw.
That's right, it was good.
It's not a bad place to be.
I would recommend going.
It's just not formal, that's all.
So that was basically the end of our day.
It was like a 30 minute drive from,
it was in Wellfleet, so it was a 30 minute drive
from where we were staying in North Truro.
So it was kind of a task to get there,
(01:02:23):
but we had a full day and it was good food
for the end of it.
Day number three.
Heck yeah.
It was golf day, another lighthouse day,
and it was exciting.
We checked out of our motel and drove to Highland Links.
We got there early so we could get breakfast sandwiches,
and we kind of caused a little bit of a struggle
(01:02:44):
because they were like, oh, you guys are a pair.
You can go ahead early, and it really messed up
their lineup.
I don't understand that.
This is, so we'll talk about the course.
This is a nice course, but it's not expensive
and it's not overly luxurious.
There's no, there's no, you know,
there's no fanciness going on.
(01:03:04):
Yeah, it's like a homey clubhouse.
But it's nice.
But it's like, we showed up an hour before tea time,
and I would expect like going to a range,
getting food, unloading the cart,
or putting your clubs in if you had, we rented,
but like, they were like, oh, you're here now.
Are you ready to go?
And we were just like shopping.
We were like looking at shirts.
(01:03:25):
Yeah, hanging out.
We're like, oh no, we know we're early.
We're just here to like kind of look around and stuff.
But they're like, you can just go after these people.
And they were like heading up to the tea box
and we're like, oh, oh.
So I had another egg and cheese croissant made for me
in front of me, so that was quite nice.
Also delicious, different type of croissant.
Really nice people there.
(01:03:45):
Very nice, just, and I bought a hat, Vince bought a shirt.
I also bought a golf ball and we rented clubs for 15 bucks.
I can't remember how much it was to actually golf there.
It wasn't that expensive.
It wasn't as expensive as you would anticipate.
I don't remember, 40 maybe for nine holes.
(01:04:06):
It's only a nine hole course.
It's the oldest links style course in the United States.
1880 something, 86, somewhere in there.
And I'll be honest with you.
I didn't actually appreciate that while we were playing,
but I thought about it afterwards.
It's really cool to think that that style
and the layout has been there.
(01:04:26):
And there's something different about it.
We don't golf that many places,
but we play a couple of courses here and there.
There's something about it that's different.
And one is obviously the links architecture.
And two, I think is the way technology has changed
with golf clubs and balls to where we can hit further
if we have a good drive, then you feel like,
(01:04:48):
wow, I'm really striking it versus a standard club
that you might play.
So it was really neat, kind of a sandy environment,
obviously it's on the beach.
Very bouncy.
This course was super difficult because it was very bouncy
and the fairways were super straight, but skinny.
And all of the rough was super long.
(01:05:12):
If you hit a ball in there, it was gone.
And they mentioned there are ticks.
Yes.
The starter.
The starter's like, if you hit one out there,
I just leave them.
I was like, yeah.
We're like, yeah.
So I had some fun there.
I didn't keep score, which is for the best.
But we got to play as just a pair, which was pretty nice.
We were expecting to play with other people, obviously.
(01:05:33):
So it's nice that we could just play together.
Yeah, my irons they gave me were, obviously I'm tall,
so they weren't really fitted, but they were pingsings,
which my old mentor at work, I think he still plays those,
are I want to say from the 80s, 1980s.
So old technology, but ping is a nice brand.
(01:05:54):
And it's just kind of cool.
They're just, I wasn't very good with them,
but they were interesting clubs.
Mine were heavy.
Yeah, you had men's clubs.
Every time I swung with them,
it just took a little bit out of me.
By the end, I was just noodle arms,
trying to get the ball somewhere.
To be honest, that was a bit disappointing.
The quality of the clubs that we had,
(01:06:14):
there were no women's clubs.
I guess available.
I think they were women's clubs,
but they were older and they were just heavy.
I borrowed the three wood from your bag a couple of times,
and I borrowed one of your wedges,
and those were both men's clubs.
So I think they were just a mixed, yeah.
I didn't feel robbed.
(01:06:35):
It's just like, it's not a premier.
It's not like, when we went to Nags Head in the Outer Banks,
that was expensive.
Renting clubs alone was.
Some places it's 90, $100 to rent clubs,
which is madness to me.
But anyways, the lighthouse is the star of the story,
and it's right in the middle of the course.
You don't have a chance of hitting it, which is nice.
(01:06:55):
But it was beautiful, fun to see.
The group behind us was like $10 to anyone
who hits the lighthouse,
and it's like, we were not the right people
to be joking about that around.
We were like, get this pipe down back there.
You better not hit the lighthouse.
I'll sue you.
I have no rights, but I will.
Also, there's people up there
in that lantern room.
(01:07:16):
Yeah, constantly.
Pretty constant stream of people
coming in and out of the lighthouse,
which is nice because there's people who are golfing,
and then there's a parking lot that's there for the museum
that's open at the Truro Museum,
and a lot of people come into the lighthouse,
which it was in great shape, very beautiful,
very well taken care of, so I enjoyed that.
(01:07:37):
Yeah, so we finished up.
We went to the lighthouse.
You got a hot dog.
Oh, so good.
Another hot dog made with a bun
that was just like a piece of bread that was toasted.
What is that?
I don't know, but it was fantastic.
So good.
I don't know if that's a Cape Cod thing
or like a Massachusetts thing, but man, it was good.
(01:07:57):
So yeah, we walked to the lighthouse.
We got everything situated.
So any pictures we took inside was in our golf outfits,
but it was $8 for a guided tour.
They just kind of told you a little bit about the history
and then let you climb up there.
Go up to the lantern room, which is nice.
It was hot and there was like 60 something stairs,
(01:08:18):
so it wasn't too bad.
Nothing about it was really strenuous,
but it has two ladders, one real ladder,
one set of stairs that's basically a ladder.
So it's kind of tricky if you have any mobility problems,
but I took a picture because Vince,
I just kept watching Vince having to go out in and out
of these tiny holes in lighthouses.
(01:08:40):
I have a couple of pictures.
Every time I went through a lighthouse,
he was having to squeeze through tiny.
They're pretty small.
Yeah.
Can you imagine rushing up these stairs, you know,
like if you were a keeper in the past and...
Kinda, I mean, people used to be smaller, honestly.
A person of my stature in the 1800s was very rare
(01:09:01):
because nutrition wasn't the same, people died, whatever.
But also, you know, you could say like fighter pilots
and horse jockeys, Formula One racers,
they're all people who are naturally small.
I would imagine there is some trends,
maybe not quite as strong as Formula One,
but some trend that people generally were smaller
(01:09:21):
who were working in these spaces.
But yeah, it was tight.
And I'm, like I said, I'm a little out of shape,
but I'm not obese.
You'd have to be pretty obese to not make it.
But it's...
Yeah, anyways, it's a tight hole.
Couple of those recurring theme.
(01:09:42):
Yeah.
You see it a couple times in our trip.
So after that, we went down to the
Province Lands Visitor Center, which was in Provincetown.
So we went back up from Truro to Provincetown Park.
Went to the visitor center.
(01:10:04):
They didn't have the stamp, the Highland Light stamp.
They had National Park stamp.
Yeah, they had a National Park stamp.
It's not the same as the USLHS passport stamp.
So it says on the website, if you're a member
of the passport member for the USLHS,
it says that it's at Provincetown's visitor center.
(01:10:26):
May also have one at Salt Pond,
but Provincetown didn't have one,
and they told us it was at the lighthouse.
So we went to the old Harbor Life Saving Station,
which is only open from two to four.
So it's pretty tight windows.
We went and saw that.
That was really cool.
Got a stamp there.
It was at the end of this boardwalk,
(01:10:48):
or basically, oh, it took some pictures of the inside,
which is pretty cool.
Oh, and I forgot, we got coffee.
This was one of the, not the highlights of our trip,
but it was quite nice that after we went,
or before we went to the old Harbor Life Saving Station,
we stopped at, I can't remember what the coffee shop
was called, but we went to a coffee shop and got.
(01:11:15):
I didn't get coffee for some reason.
Yeah, you did, salty bee.
That was a different time.
No, it was before that, because I had to poop.
First coffee of our trip.
Why did we go back to, we weren't close to the bee though,
parking.
We wanted coffee.
So we went just to the bee?
(01:11:36):
Remember we parked for $4 an hour,
and there was that lady that was there
yelling at the parking guy.
Yeah.
Okay, yeah, I passed that up.
We needed some more food.
The hot dog was good, but coffee.
Yeah.
So we went to Provincetown to,
I don't know what that one was called.
Cool logo, very central Provincetown.
(01:11:58):
Oh yeah, it was four letters.
Like a fox logo or something.
Something with horns, I can't remember.
But anyways, now we're onto the life saving station.
So we got a salty bee.
They had a back porch that we sat on.
That was nice.
It was nice to unwind for a little bit.
But then we went to the life saving station, got a stamp,
went to Provincetown's visitor center,
was told there was no Highlands Lighthouse stamp.
(01:12:22):
So we went back to the lighthouse,
and they said they don't have the stamp.
It's at Salt Pond Visitor Center,
which is where we were gonna go the next day.
So we just let it go.
But I was like, oh, why are they all,
why does everyone have wrong information?
Yeah.
It was full of energy.
But anyway, so by then we had checked out of our Martell.
We went back to, or we went down to Dennis.
(01:12:45):
Busy day.
A little bit more traffic than when we came in.
This was, at this point it was 4 p.m. on a Friday.
So it was a little bit more traffic.
We went to the Sailing Cow for dinner,
which I didn't take any pictures of
because I got to the point in my trip,
I'm not a very good traveler,
but there's a point in my trip
where I get a little homesick, I miss my cats,
(01:13:07):
and I get a little overwhelmed with all of our events.
And it was at this moment at the Sailing Cow
that I was like, I wanna go home.
Vince was like, oh my gosh, switched food with me.
He got a burger, which was actually delicious,
and I got stuffed.
Some fish.
Something, yeah.
And it was just more soupy
(01:13:28):
than I wanted it to be, so we switched.
He had onion rings, too.
We had pretty good drinks, and we sat out on the porch.
It was very windy.
That's another interesting thing about Cape Cod
is that it's very windy.
At sunset.
Yeah, and then it dies off when the sun goes down.
In the morning it's not so bad,
but like the middle of the day.
Well, that's true.
Typically it's true everywhere.
(01:13:49):
At sunset, and to a degree at sunrise,
you have a gust of wind because of the expanding air.
So as the sun heats the earth, that heats the air,
and it has somewhere to go.
So it creates wind gusts.
I don't really like that concept.
We're on this little marble, honey.
The concept that air needs somewhere to go.
(01:14:11):
It's just high to low pressure.
I know, I'm just saying, why is it rushing?
Why is it running?
It's wind, it's air.
It's heated up by the sun.
The earth is heating it.
Yes, yes, I know.
I'm just saying it's a crazy concept.
My dad's talked about that for a long time,
and he grew up on the coast.
So I wonder if it's stronger on the coast
or more noticeable.
But the mornings were dead calm on the water and wind.
(01:14:36):
And then the evening, it wasn't terrible,
but it was kind of surprising to have wind.
So yeah, dinner at the sailing cow,
we were in some 15 mile an hour wind.
It was just too much to sit outside.
Cold.
But it was good.
It was a good dinner.
Yeah.
And it was recommended by our motel.
So we went with it.
So the next morning, we tried to do some shelling.
(01:14:57):
So usually, everywhere I've been to,
like Florida and, you know.
Outer Banks.
Hawaii and stuff.
The low tide, maybe it was timing.
I don't know anything about tides,
but it was always early in the morning,
like five or six a.m. when there'd be low tide.
So we went shelling thinking that that would be
the best time to go shellings early in the morning.
(01:15:18):
And then I find out that low tides actually at 11 a.m.
and 11 p.m.
So that night, we did some more shelling
in the depths of the darkness.
It was crazy how dark it was.
But we'll talk about that later.
So slept in a little bit after that,
headed towards Nosset Lighthouse
because we had a private tour with Susan Abbott,
who's the vice president
of the Nosset Light Preservation Society.
(01:15:40):
She'll go back to our Nosset Light episode
to hear more about it.
But we put in.
Got lost.
So we put in Nosset Beach,
instead of Nosset Light Beach to the GPS.
They're not the same.
They're not the same,
and they're hardly even close, technically.
They're like 15, 20 minutes away.
(01:16:01):
So we stopped somewhere to get breakfast.
We didn't have enough time to eat really,
so we just got like coffee cake
and I got some kind of cornbread muffin.
Cornbread is another thing that there's a lot of at Cape Cod.
I don't know what is going on there.
All these things where I'm like,
why is it that every time I order a muffin,
it's cornbread?
(01:16:22):
A corn muffin?
Very old school.
We also got coffee, ended up at Nosset Beach,
and couldn't find the parking area
that Susan was telling me about.
But one thing to note is that if you go to a beach,
you're likely to have bad connection.
So getting out of the beach is difficult
if you don't know where you're going
(01:16:43):
because the GPS won't load.
It's...
Fair.
At least on an iPhone, the GPS was giving us
a lot of struggle.
So we just started driving,
hoping that we would come out of that bubble.
And eventually we did.
And I got all these texts from Susan that were like,
hey, I took down this rope that she was telling me
to keep an eye out for.
Maybe that's why you missed it and everything.
(01:17:03):
And I was like, no, we're just dumb.
And we put in Nosset Beach instead of Nosset Light Beach.
So drove up there.
She was super understanding about it, of course.
Everyone's so nice down there.
But we made it there, got a tour, super nice.
They just did a big restoration, right?
Yeah, it was in great shape.
In the past couple of years,
(01:17:23):
really neat like cherry wood planks in the watch room.
Very pretty red, everything's newly coated.
She let me take a picture through
where the clockwork mechanism used to hang.
And so it's like this perfect picture
of going down the center of the lighthouse, very cool.
(01:17:45):
We got to poke our heads into the lantern room.
You can't climb in there because the beacon's so large,
but it's very loud.
It wouldn't let me put a video obviously in PowerPoint.
So that was a bummer.
Yeah, the electric motor is loud.
Yeah, but it's red and white.
One side's red, one side's white.
So it's flashing the colors of the lighthouse, really cool.
Is this the best shape lighthouse we saw?
(01:18:06):
I think it is.
In best shape?
Yeah.
Yeah, that and Highland light.
Highland was good.
Highland's in good shape.
This one though, I mean, especially talking with Susan,
it was nice because she's so closely involved
in the maintaining of this lighthouse.
It was in beautiful shape.
And then I know you're getting to it,
but we also got to see the house,
(01:18:28):
which is in a work in progress.
They had a 25 year lease
to the previous owner of the lighthouse.
And when she passed away, her kids took it on,
like passed out in the family.
But the lease was up this year.
And so they're fixing it up so that they can lease it out
to tenants, I'm pretty sure that's right, right?
(01:18:48):
Yeah.
Okay.
I mean, visitors.
Visitors.
Visitors.
Visitors.
So she took us around the keepers house,
which was awesome because nobody used to be allowed
to go in there.
So it's probably one of the first people
who got to be taken through and take a look at it.
So in the basement, they had the original-
(01:19:09):
Library?
Yeah, lighthouse library,
which they used to bring the whole thing, right?
Full of books.
And it would just like pass between lighthouses.
And like, it was a Coast Guard thing, wasn't it?
Yeah, it was the books that were selected
by the Coast Guard, the military,
for the keepers to have access to.
So it was information that they needed to know
(01:19:29):
and have access to.
And probably also some, I think the Bible was in there.
Yeah, some fun stuff.
Some entertainment too.
Really neat piece of woodworking though.
So the original one for Gnostic Light was in the basement,
which is awesome because it's been in somebody's,
like their house, that they just kept it down there
all this time.
Really cool.
(01:19:49):
So got to walk through there.
It's pretty special experience for us.
And then after that tour, we walked three sisters,
probably like 15 minute walk or something,
maybe 10 minutes, nothing crazy, but it was hot.
Walked three sisters.
And then this is when we went to the Salt Pond Visitors
Center for stamps and bought some goodies.
(01:20:10):
And we almost got turned away again
for these stinking stamps because people come there
for the, what'd you call them?
National parks stamps.
They have a passport as well.
And so they're like, here's the stamps.
And we're like, it's not these stamps.
For anyone who's wanting to do the lighthouse stamps,
they're not the national park stamps.
The lighthouse ones are usually in like a baggie
(01:20:31):
or like a bin or something that somebody
has to get out for you.
It's not, like the national park ones are laid out.
So you can come and stamp it yourself
without having to talk to anybody.
But the lighthouse ones are a little different.
So we had to go back and got some good stamps.
They have, at the Salt Pond one, they have three sisters.
They have Gnoss at Light.
(01:20:55):
And they had something else that we got.
I don't recall.
I know, I can't remember.
But it was another one.
So we got some good stampage from that area.
After that, we went straight to the Coast Guard motorboat
36500, 36500.
Story of which was featured in the movie,
(01:21:15):
The Finest Hours by Disney, which neither of us have seen.
So we don't have any details on that,
but we were told by the guy.
You should probably watch it.
Never got his name.
That the story is mostly embellished in the Disney movie
of this motorboat because it partook
(01:21:36):
in a rescue mission for a couple of sinking boats.
And so the whole story is, you can see it online,
but he said only about 35% of The Finest Hours
is true story, the rest of it's just embellishment.
The boat, are you gonna talk about it?
No, I don't, no.
Well, it was really cool.
(01:21:56):
First off, they keep it in good shape.
The two gentlemen, I didn't get your names either.
They're both very well acquainted with the boat.
Established in the community too.
Everyone who was going out of the port would wave
and like tell them where they were going,
what they were doing.
It was really cool.
The guy who was talking with us more,
(01:22:17):
he said he grew up there in that town.
He knows the town.
The boat is in great shape.
Really well taken care of.
It's incredible that it's in such good shape.
And what is 1940s, is that right?
1942?
He said it was 70 something,
pretty sure it was like 80 years old at max,
but they had the original cockpit.
(01:22:39):
What is it?
Where the captain steers the ship.
Whatever.
I had it until you said something else.
Planted something else in your face.
The motor is carbureted, which is wild to me.
That's very old technology.
What was I gonna say though?
(01:23:00):
Oh, it's about to go into a museum.
Right.
So it's like your last couple of years
of being able to actually step foot on it
while it's in the water.
I mean, we see, like I told Emily,
it's cool to physically, like you said,
be on the water, in the boat.
I can touch anything I want to.
It's kind of risky, I guess, for them.
(01:23:21):
But like I'm a part of this historical thing
and soon there's gonna be a rope
and you're not gonna be able to touch it.
And you're gonna look at it in some hall.
We were just walking all over, climbing around the side.
Yeah, I got to climb into where they kept the people
that they were saving in the boat.
They kept it where there's life jackets and everything.
(01:23:44):
But I got to climb in there.
It was fun.
Crazy.
We got a stamp there too.
There's a little hut right outside of this boat
where you can buy memorabilia and goodies and stuff.
Betty?
Patty.
Patty, sorry, Patty.
Hamilton, I believe, for last time.
Patty was an OG gangster.
She was awesome.
She was very cool, very nice.
(01:24:06):
And she helped us out with the stamp
and she was running the shop there.
The gentleman that, I can't remember his name,
but that talked with us said,
oh yeah, that's Patty so-and-so.
I think he said the daughter of.
The daughter of somebody.
One of the captains or.
It's not that I didn't care.
It's that I was between saying hi to both of them.
(01:24:26):
Yes, we were in between.
We were walking out and we were getting baked by the sun.
Vince, before we got out of the car, was like,
do you think I'm gonna need sunscreen?
And I was like, oh, you won't.
But we were just blasted by the sun the whole time.
I always need sunscreen.
I was getting pretty toasty.
And I was like, what, where, what are we doing?
But Patty reached out to us on our website afterwards,
(01:24:46):
said she followed us and we appreciate that.
So Patty, if you wanna talk about your personal history,
let us know.
Yeah.
Be cool.
It was nice to talk to her at the end.
That was pretty cool.
Got her stamp.
Then we went to a grocery store.
By this time we hadn't eaten lunch, we were starving.
Went to Shaw's and we got pre-made salad and sandwiches.
(01:25:09):
We are pushing it on this trip.
I'm talking like when the amount of notes that I take,
we really, this is a note also for this trip
that I have learned is that I was very excited
when I made up the plans for this trip about the stamps.
(01:25:29):
So I made it all about stamps.
I mentioned that.
That we were going all over the place,
here and there, everywhere,
just trying to get all these stamps collected.
And it's not a good idea for a trip to do that.
It's just, you really gotta,
I don't know what needs to be different,
but it's not that you need to spend more time somewhere.
It's that you go less places and you immerse
(01:25:51):
in specific things that you're excited about,
not just to collect a stamp.
Even though it's an awesome idea.
I brought it up early on in our planning.
We talked about this.
I think we can.
Yes, I remember.
I was like, man, like,
cause I planned a trip where you're gonna see,
I think three lighthouses.
Yes.
I was like, no.
I was like, no.
I'm like, three lighthouses?
(01:26:12):
Like, how often do you see three?
And you're like, well, I'm gonna see all these.
And we look at Cape Cod on a map,
on the lighthouse map especially.
There's a lot of lighthouses out there.
And light ship and life saving stations.
Like, cool, cool stuff.
And that is the reason we went on this trip.
Yes.
However, it's a lot.
Now, if you wanna do a lighthouse trip,
(01:26:32):
this was a good lighthouse trip.
And in between, we got to go to the beach.
We played golf.
We had all this good food.
There was a gay parade.
All these things that we didn't plan on.
In my opinion, the first few days,
the first two to three days were perfect to me.
I really enjoyed it.
I'm a homebody.
So I'm one of those people that I get to my home base,
(01:26:54):
which is like usually a motel, hotel, Airbnb or whatever.
And I wanna spend some time there recuperating.
And I didn't do that on this trip.
We went back to like change clothes or shower or whatever,
but I wasn't pining to be laying down with a book
or with my friends show on.
There's adventure out there.
You gotta go.
Yeah, I was excited about it.
And then I think it became overwhelming
(01:27:16):
the last couple of days where I should have
planned this differently.
But the first couple of days, I didn't feel that.
Well, we could even, in the future, it's the same thing.
Listeners won't know, but my dad and brother,
we talked about going on motorcycle rides.
If you can afford it, build a day in the middle
where for us it could be golf or something,
(01:27:36):
but like go to a movie,
like something you don't do on vacation
because I'm all the way out here on vacation,
but something that's relaxing and familiar
or just cook one meal at your Airbnb.
Do something that's not outgoing, outgoing places.
But I could keep up with this trip
with the help of lots of carbs and coffee.
(01:27:59):
Lots of good food to look forward to, I feel like.
We peppered in all of our busy days with good food
and the one day that we didn't plan it
was after this boat event.
So actually, we must have gone to the grocery store
before we went to this motorboat because.
Sure was, yeah.
Yeah.
Oh my gosh, there's still so much of this day left.
It's unbelievable.
(01:28:20):
So we went to a liquor store after we got our food.
Oh yeah, next door to the groceries.
More powerful sunscreen learning
from our burnt neck incident
that we need more powerful than 30.
70 at least.
70 plus is what we got.
And we got, so oh, this was another interesting thing
I forgot to mention.
(01:28:40):
I found a devil's purse.
So.
Devil's purse, I'm sorry.
I found a devil's purse also known as a mermaid's purse
on the beach and I left it there.
What was I thinking?
I got a good picture.
No, I'm bummed.
Because every time I go somewhere beachy
and there's a plentiful amount of shells,
(01:29:01):
I collect some and I make a wall hanging
of like a gradient from white to black,
some color in the middle.
I think Mexico Beach in Florida is where I collected,
it was like an orange color scheme.
Oh cool.
And I can't remember if it was Fort Lauderdale
or some other beach I went to
that was like a red pink color scheme.
(01:29:23):
I think this one's gonna be like a gray pink color scheme,
like the shells that I collected were.
But I found a devil's purse and I put it back
and it just, I didn't really consider my wall hanging
when I put it back.
So I thought about it the rest of the trip
and never found another one so disappointed.
So I ordered one from somebody who lives
in Rehoboth, Massachusetts,
(01:29:44):
which is probably like an hour's drive from Cape Cod.
So she may be collecting the devil's purse
that I got rid of.
That's so funny.
Such a bummer.
But Vince got devil's purse brewery IPAs.
Yeah, it wasn't an IPA.
It was a Kölsch.
Kölsch?
(01:30:04):
K-O-L-S-H, S-C-H.
Okay.
Kind of a stronger beer.
I like it, it was good.
Yeah.
It's not a beer to drink out of a can.
So it was okay.
I left to all of them for the maids.
I could only get an eight pack of Surfside
is like vodka drinks.
(01:30:25):
Yeah. Pre-mixed.
I had one of those, it was good.
I'd only seen them on the coast side states.
So I usually get it
because I think they're really tasty,
but Vince and I shared those at night.
But we went to the liquor store.
We also found a bottle from Truro Vineyards.
They had a lighthouse shaped bottle.
Yeah.
So we bought it, took it home.
They had a rose and like a cranberry, like red.
(01:30:48):
Sweet red, I'm sure.
Yeah, so it was pretty exciting
because we got one that supported St. Augustine lighthouse.
We have that in our house as like-
We had a couple of those.
Yeah, like decor, really tasty.
So now we have another one and they're not the same bottle.
So that was, cause I was thinking
it's going to be the same bottle.
Of course.
Like there's only going to be one person
who makes glass lighthouse bottles.
(01:31:09):
Nope.
Nope. They're different.
Which is nuts.
I just didn't expect that.
Yeah. After this, oh my gosh, we're still going.
We drove to the Coast Guard Heritage Museum and outside,
I started to lose my voice.
Outside, we saw an old jail and I was like-
(01:31:30):
Oh no.
So we stopped at the old jail.
It was cool, but this guy-
Was it James?
Huh?
Was it James?
The name of the guy?
Yeah, I can't, he had a pin on, I can't remember his name.
I was kind of like zoned out,
but he gave us an hour and a half long tour
of this single room.
(01:31:51):
It wasn't that long, was it?
It was that long.
I kept track because I knew that it was going to go on
forever because I was looking at, you know, you sign,
usually when you go in for a tour of something old,
like a life-saving station or whatever,
you sign your name into their log
and there was only one person that visited him yesterday
and only like one couple before or one couple after us
(01:32:13):
that visited him that day.
So he wants to chat and we actually,
we enjoyed talking with him.
It was cool, it was interesting.
It was cool history.
It was just like the oldest jail in the United States
or something and fell into disrepair,
but then they found it, some lady's backyard,
she was like, I want to tear this down.
And they were like, wait a minute, this is the old jail.
(01:32:35):
So we got a tour and when we came out,
we came for the Coast Guard Heritage Museum.
I was actually very excited to see this.
It was one of those things that I was looking forward
to seeing and we came out and when we went in,
there was a flag flying that said open and we came out
and it was just like this plank that says closed.
I nearly fell to my knees in disappointment
(01:32:56):
because somewhere in it, I'm thinking it was spiritual.
At three o'clock, I had a feeling,
I was like, it wasn't even a full thought,
but it was like, this museum could be closing
because of this guy talking so long
and I was like, hours are weird here
and it was a Saturday, so I didn't really know
the details of when it closed, but I'm telling you,
(01:33:18):
I had some kind of intervention that was an attempt
at happening that was like, it's closing
and I was like, I gotta listen to this man talk.
And we walked outside of the jail,
made a little donation and then we're walking towards,
you'd already seen it, but I hadn't seen it yet.
(01:33:38):
And the gentleman who must have been the volunteer
for the Coast Guard.
Or whoever was working.
Whoever was working.
He goes, well, I hope you're not going to see this,
to see us or something like that.
And I was like, well, yeah.
Oh no, I see you closed.
I'm looking at the signs.
That was the first time you saw it?
Yeah.
Oh my gosh, I'm surprised.
I was like, I must not have been speaking coherently
(01:33:59):
because I was like, oh no.
Or maybe I thought you were joking.
Like, oh, it's going to be closed or something.
And of course, I'm not going to hold this guy up.
No, we're not going to be like,
can you stay open later?
Like that would be stupid.
He goes, well, come back.
Come back.
And I was like, I didn't say anything,
(01:34:22):
which is rude for me.
Yeah, we're usually.
I just was quiet.
I mean, what are we going to say?
We can't.
It'll be 20 years before we're back.
We can't, asshole.
No.
He was so nice.
We'll come back and see us.
I know.
We were like, it's going to be closed for the next week.
Yeah, it was closed Sunday, Monday.
(01:34:43):
And those were the only days we had left.
We maybe could have made it on Monday
because we canceled our plans,
but oh, it was pretty sad.
I bet it's cool.
I, there's moments where I've been so disappointed.
It was funny because it's just a museum,
but I was so excited to go here
and I had a stamp and everything, you know,
but there's moments where I've been so disappointed
(01:35:05):
where I don't know what emotion I'm feeling,
where I'm like going wildly between wanting to cry
and like hysterically laughing about it.
It was really rough.
I, there's nothing on this trip
that made me more disappointed
than getting beat out of going to the museum
because of the old jail guy talking for so long.
And the old jail was interesting, but not.
(01:35:27):
Yeah, but not an hour and a half interesting.
And we were too nice to just be like,
hey, we really came to go to the museum.
I gotta go.
Like, I should have checked the hours.
I should have been like, oh, we'll do that next
because I want to see this first.
The guy's like, here, if you look,
this is an exhibit of old bones that were found.
None of them were human.
I was like, oh.
And he goes, and we think the food was actually not
(01:35:50):
for the inmates, but for the guards.
I was like, okay.
And then we looked, I looked closely at this thing of bones.
Like, is there going to be some wild in here?
No, no, it's not nothing.
I don't mean to take it.
It should be included there,
but I was waiting for like the mic drop or like the,
what's the really crazy thing you're going to say?
(01:36:10):
The crazy thing about the jail was supposed to be
like the paranormal.
Like, oh, a lot of people die here and everything.
But he was like, I don't believe in that.
So it wasn't like a discussed part of the thing.
We're like, okay.
He's like, a bunch of people tried to spend the night here
and they couldn't do it.
Not one of them.
I was like, yeah, I can see that.
It's kind of creepy right now.
It's very creepy.
(01:36:30):
But I tried to burn it down.
So it's all burnt.
It's got car things and stuff.
I did enjoy it.
It was interesting.
I just knew that I was waiting for something else
and it wasn't going to come.
So we ate it after that.
We got recommended a couple of times to go to the
Matake's Wharf restaurant.
Yeah, what the heck?
Everyone was saying that.
(01:36:51):
Everyone.
And it was all local.
It wasn't like the sailing cow where it was like a pamphlet
where they're like, eat here.
They probably have some kind of something.
Yeah.
Some monetary, but.
So we were recommended to go there by a few people.
What?
What are you smiling about?
I just, I don't want to ruin it.
I think we missed something there.
(01:37:11):
Like we didn't order the right thing.
Matake's?
Or we were there too early or.
Definitely there too early.
Something was.
We got hounded by the valet guy.
We didn't deserve it.
Listen, guy, listen.
I've got a shitty Nissan rental car
with a tire that's all scuffed from some curb.
(01:37:31):
I don't know if we did that.
Somebody did that.
I don't know.
And I'm like, you made, I think you said it.
I was like, oh, you're right.
I don't think I can let anyone else drive this.
It's a rental car.
And now if he's a valet, it would be fine.
He's trying.
And it's his job and that's the way he makes money.
There's no downside, but like I'm parking
in the back of the lot as far from the entrance
(01:37:51):
as you can go.
And he's like.
He walks all the way.
Yelling at our car.
He walks all the way over to here
and he's just like this fake smile at me.
And he's like, this is valet parking only.
And I'm looking at all these empty spots
where they're at 3 p.m. or something, 4 p.m.
We were there crazy early.
Just before anybody else is even there.
And I just stared at him.
Cause I was just like, do you want to repark the car?
(01:38:15):
Or you can't.
I don't know.
Like you gave us no choice.
Valley parking or nothing.
Like can we eat here?
I don't know.
So Vince was like.
He wanted to know we were going to the restaurant for sure.
We were like, we'll give you the keys,
but you can't drive it cause it's a rental.
And he was just like, yeah, yeah.
I was like, can the car stay here?
Can it stay here?
I'll drive it.
(01:38:36):
Please don't drive it.
It's a rental car.
And it's not like it's a Lamborghini.
So he takes the keys.
We eat at the restaurant.
Which is his own thing.
It's nice.
I got pictures.
It was a really nice restaurant.
Very good shape.
It was just dead because we went at a time
where there was nobody around.
I had the best fish tacos I've ever had in my life.
(01:38:57):
Black bean, some kind of sauce on top.
Oh, it was so amazing.
It was hot and the fish just fell apart.
I got the Mannequins fish tacos.
Yeah, they look good.
Absolutely recommend that.
It was so delicious.
And then Vince got, it was just fish and chips, right?
It was supposed to be fish and chips.
And I guess it is, but it's a stripe,
(01:39:19):
a filet of haddock that's fried.
And I'm just not used to that.
It was good.
I was gonna say that your meal looked
like one of the better things.
It was just like perfectly fried, crispy, hot, delicious.
It didn't have a lot of flavor to the haddock.
But I mean, it wasn't bad.
(01:39:40):
I'd be happy to have it now.
I'm raving about the food.
It was just some of the best.
I thought it was good.
So delicious.
But we did hear,
so we were there at like 3.30, like we said,
just because it was weird, weird timing.
Yeah.
But some host was on the phone as we were coming in
and she said, for tonight, two,
I think she said 90 minute minimum wait.
(01:40:02):
And I was like looking around.
I was like, I know it's 3.30.
I was like, what are you talking about?
This place seats like a hundred people, 150 maybe.
It's on the water.
It's pretty.
The food was good.
Maybe there's like a lunch menu
and dinner is like fancier.
But anyways, even the folks who told us
about the place were like, you might be okay.
(01:40:23):
It's gonna be busy.
And they're like, yeah, going right now.
Yeah, you'll probably be okay.
But it was crazy how dead it was
from how many people recommended it.
But I thought the food was amazing.
We got lobster bisque.
Very good.
Oh, that was good.
Very good.
Yeah.
As an appetizer.
So I'd go back there.
We got water.
Cause we were like, at this point,
we were just hot and frustrated.
(01:40:45):
I just need to bring like a 30 pack of water.
I know we had a really hard time staying hydrated
on this trip.
Everyone, if you don't know this, I didn't think of it.
We should go to a grocery store first.
When you get your sunscreen, you forgot it,
you go to get all that and then get a bunch of waters.
(01:41:06):
Probably some cheap snacks to go between stuff.
Groceries are hard to come by at the top half
of like going towards past Wellfleet and stuff.
They're hard to come by.
There's no big, immediate stores.
That would have helped us out though.
I was buying water bottles everywhere we went for like.
Smart water and stuff.
$10.
Marked up.
Like, I need it.
The water, we didn't do a very good job staying hydrated.
(01:41:29):
It was kind of crazy.
Anyways, I sound like we went on some excursion.
Like we're out in the bush.
I feel like we were all over the place.
I think we were just constantly so busy.
Yeah.
Like even I'm at the golf club.
I'm in the clubhouse and I'm like,
I gotta get something to eat.
I gotta get something to drink.
Like not like a beer.
Like I just, I need hydration.
(01:41:50):
Water.
I need powerade.
I need water or something.
Silly.
Yeah.
That food looks fantastic on screen.
Yeah.
It was delicious.
Yeah.
The valet guy gave us a little trouble.
We were coming out.
He forced himself into our vehicle and drove it up to us.
I will say that's the only time I've never tipped.
Yeah.
I haven't tipped a valet.
(01:42:10):
Because we weren't given a, like he wasn't nice.
He was just doing it because he wanted us to pay him.
And it was like, no, we said no.
You can't drive.
I'm sorry.
Like, okay, I'm sorry that this is valet parking only,
but we want to eat here.
And then what do we do?
Well, and I've been to nice, nice places
where I've seen valets.
I've never driven to a nice place.
(01:42:32):
It's always been like taxis or whatever.
Yeah.
But where they're like parking someone's new,
like Audi, like a nice car.
This is not that.
This is not what's happening.
And it's not busy.
And it's not some garage that's far away
where I need to tip.
I can see my car.
We were trying to walk to it.
And he's just like, nope,
I'm going to be driving your car up here.
(01:42:52):
And it's like through the empty spots.
And then I understand how important this will be later
in the day when there's an hour and a half minimum wait
for two people and there's cars coming in
and out of this place like crazy.
Yes, you need valet parking.
But we didn't at that moment.
There was nobody there.
Well, and we're a couple of kids
compared to the average person that was in that restaurant.
(01:43:13):
The people who are renting the boats that you could watch.
They have their own boat or they're renting a boat
and there's a yacht club next door.
I just felt poor.
I didn't feel bad.
I was just like, this is not.
I was just frustrated by it.
I'm not from, you know, we don't have,
this is not necessary.
And then you're trying to like hold your hand out for money.
And we're like, please excuse me
(01:43:33):
so I can get into my vehicle.
Yeah.
It's weird how small of a thing it was, but it felt,
felt bad.
Felt demeaning kind of in some way,
like you don't belong here and I'm going to prove it.
And it's like, oh man, I just want my fish tacos.
It was very expensive food.
So it was definitely, it was a wonderful,
really nice dinner spot.
We were there too early, but the food was incredible.
(01:43:54):
It would have been amazing if we went there
planning to spend some money,
planning on the Valley parking, dressing nice.
We were in our t-shirt.
Yeah, I was going to say, maybe it was the clothing
that kind of set everybody off.
I didn't feel like I was supposed to be there,
even though no one was there.
Like, I don't know.
I've been privileged a lot of my life to travel
and have nice clothes and nice food and things.
(01:44:16):
So that was unusual for me.
Usually I'm like, yes, I am here.
The prince is here, but yeah, I didn't have that.
Yeah.
So after this, it was kind of a disappointing day.
Just not, it just started out rough with the,
you know, going to the wrong beach.
And then, you know, we thought we wouldn't get a stamp
(01:44:36):
and I was kind of like standing out in the sun
and then this place and the closing museum.
So we decided that we were just going to stay in
the rest of the night and we broke out our drinks
and we bought, where did we buy those?
We bought a Boston cream pie and, oh,
because we stopped for coffee on the way home.
It was called, let me see if I can find it, Three Fins.
(01:44:58):
That was a great coffee shop.
That was great.
I got an espresso with a little bit of stuff in there.
Yes, we had Boston cream pie and some kind of raspberry
mascarpone from this Three Fins.
It was very cute, full of police officers
who were just like stopping to get coffee.
But it was about to close,
so we kind of closed them out there.
(01:45:19):
Got some coffee, it was so good.
Really fun.
They roast their own coffee.
So they had a bunch of unroasted beans in the back on racks,
so it was neat.
Went back and we, that motel had a fire pit
that you could, like a gas fire pit.
And so we started that up, drank, played card games,
(01:45:42):
ate our little snackies.
And then when it was late enough for the tide to go down,
it was like 10 to 11 o'clock,
we went out to the beach to do some shelling,
which there were shells everywhere,
just piles of seashells.
It was amazing.
That was pretty crazy.
Tons of dead horseshoe crabs.
What is going on at Cape Cod?
(01:46:02):
I saw, funny enough, a TikTok the next day.
No way.
That was like, they're not dead.
Okay, but that's not true.
What?
We did not see molted shells.
It wasn't shells.
We saw whole horseshoe crabs.
With all their legs and stuff.
Some of them were eaten, but most of them weren't.
They were definitely full crabs, all different sizes.
Some enormous ones, some little ones.
(01:46:23):
Which is weird.
Don't know what's happening.
No idea.
But it was definitely abnormal.
We saw them, just like at least 10,
every time we went to a beach, all kinds of,
I don't know, it was kind of sad.
But it was so dark out there.
Even with all the motels and stuff really close by,
it was so dark.
We had our phone flashlights out,
and if you didn't have your flashlight pointed
on something, you weren't gonna see it.
(01:46:44):
It was so dark.
But I really enjoyed it.
We just spent the rest of our night doing that,
collecting seashells.
I found some whelk egg cases.
And Vince found, oh, I saw the name,
and now I can't remember what it was.
The very long clam, where when it opens,
they're crossing each other, because they're so long.
(01:47:06):
I got one of those.
Lots of slipper shells, but nothing super interesting.
No twisty shells.
I found one whelk shell.
A big conch with those head holes on it.
Covered in algae, so we didn't keep it,
because it would have been stinky.
Lots of barnacles.
Cool.
Pretty fun.
It was fun.
(01:47:26):
So last day was spent in Martha's Vineyard.
Oh yeah, here's a picture I took of us chilling.
He was on the phone with his mom.
And I got to pick up a couple of crabs.
That's how I like them.
Little spotty crabs.
Living, spunky, climbing.
So then, the next day, we got up early to catch our ferry
(01:47:48):
to Martha's Vineyard.
We paid for Island Queen ferry, which was nice.
We were gonna do the steamship authority,
because it was cheaper, but then the parking situation
was kind of like, seemed like it was gonna be a lot,
where we park far away from the ferry
and take a shuttle to the port,
and we just didn't really wanna go through all of that.
So we chose Island Queen,
(01:48:09):
which was $10 more per ticket,
but the parking was the same cost,
and you could walk.
It was nice.
It's the right choice, to be honest.
Yeah, so we went early.
They opened 30 minutes before departure time,
so you had some time to find a seat you wanted,
and it really filled up, so it was good we got there early.
And if you don't get there 15 minutes
(01:48:31):
before departure time, then they can give your ticket away.
But the ferry ride was really nice.
It was a little, just the tiniest bit rocky,
leaving or entering the harbor,
but the rest of the time was really smooth.
Yeah.
And it was about a 35 minute ride,
so overall pretty enjoyable.
It came into Oak Bluffs, and it was too early
(01:48:53):
for the town to be awake, basically.
So Vince and I got yet another egg and cheese croissant.
And what did you get?
You got a ham and cheese croissant, didn't you?
Yeah, some of those on the shelf.
Yeah, something easy.
It was good.
But they were already kinda poppin',
and it was like 9 a.m. or something, so 9.30.
(01:49:15):
So the rest of the town was pretty dead,
but we got an unlimited day pass for the bus,
got on the bus, took it to Edgar Town,
and walked directly to the lighthouse.
Even by then, it was getting hot.
And the walk was pretty far from where the bus drops you off.
It was some visitor center or something.
So it was kind of a long walk,
but the houses were wealthy, and it was fun to see
(01:49:38):
all of the nice flowers and stuff that they plant,
and manicured gardens, all that kind of super cool things.
Yeah, that was, again, Martha's Vineyard.
I saw it on the map, and I thought of it
as this one little tiny island.
And there was multiple towns that were not small,
spread out by multiple miles.
Spread out?
I thought it was gonna be one continuous town.
(01:50:00):
The bus. I don't know why,
but visually, looking at a map,
you don't think these places are as big as they actually are.
The bus was the nicest bus I've ever seen.
Really? Which is a weird, oh my gosh.
I don't like that scratchy seat material.
It's still a city bus, okay?
But imagine a city bus that you spend
every option you can pick.
So it's got special coral pattern.
(01:50:23):
It's got clear plastic hand grips instead of straps.
It's got automatic buttons and pull signs
on all the openings. That's true.
It's still a city bus.
It's nice. LED lights, but it's nice.
And that town was wealthy.
That whole Martha's Vineyard.
Affluent island with probably high taxes.
Yeah.
We were drinking coffee.
(01:50:43):
Emily was taking a break reading something.
Yes, my legs were killing me.
But I was just people watching.
There's this group of women, I don't know, in their 20s.
Bachelor of pretty? And they were like,
no, no, no, just they live there.
Or they're visiting their house that's there.
There's something like a girl was bringing her friends,
maybe from college.
I'm jealous.
One of the girls goes and the valley girl.
I would love a coffee and like a sandwich moment.
(01:51:08):
And she's like, that's what she said.
Sandwich moment.
I don't know.
Like she did this one.
To get a sandwich, I guess.
Cause like the girl who knew where they were
was like guiding the other girls around.
Yeah.
And she goes, okay, so there's the best chai
is on this corner where we were at.
Oh.
And she goes, that's the best chai.
But if you want like a blind down here is blended stuff.
(01:51:31):
Latte, latte, and then.
So she knew the area, which I appreciate.
It's not, I don't know why I appreciate that.
I just think it's nice.
You know, people not just.
But I don't know if she's local.
I think that they have a house there.
Okay.
And they come, you know.
I think that's pretty common in Martha's Vineyard
is that they're like summer houses.
They come for a week, a year.
And they're multiple millions of dollars,
custom driveways that are like, like laid stones.
(01:51:55):
It's fun to be a visitor there and see
like how much money people have put into their little houses.
It's crazy.
Like eventually you don't know what to spend money on.
So then you get copper rain.
Yeah, they had copper frigging copper pipe gutters
that were polished.
Oh.
And I was like, what?
Like, yeah.
So unnecessary, but it's awesome.
(01:52:16):
Who was telling us about siding?
I think it was Susan Abbott.
Susan, yeah.
She was telling us about how if you're wealthy,
your house doesn't have these very recognizable beach.
So white oak?
Siding.
I can't remember what she said.
Some wood.
Or something.
If you think of Cape Cod.
Shingles.
Yeah, the shingles.
(01:52:37):
If you think of Cape Cod, like a beach house,
you'll think of those shingles.
Yeah.
The gray kind of tattered.
Separated.
They're like six inches long, each one.
And they just cover all the sides.
And she was saying, if you're wealthy, if you have money,
then the front of your house has not those nice.
Straight siding.
Straight ones, yeah.
And if you're really rich, then the whole house
(01:52:57):
is covered in the straight ones.
And there was a lot of, there was a lot of mix.
But there was no fully shingled houses.
So it was funny, she gave us a way to tell.
That we were like, oh, hey.
Like a historical nod to having money.
Not just like today, what's the best siding.
But like, what's the style of wealth?
How wealthy are you?
(01:53:18):
On Martha's Vineyard, so you have to boat out materials
to that island to build a house.
Crazy.
It was crazy.
It was really fun to walk through those.
It was starting to get hot.
I was still feeling that beach walk we did on Long Point.
So we had to stop a couple of times for my feet to rest.
But anyway, we climbed Edgar Town, Harvard Lighthouse.
(01:53:40):
Which was cool.
Yeah, it was fun.
It was starting to get busy even at 10 p.m.
And you got to climb up to the top.
Ah, I think I have a picture of you.
Yeah, another hole.
Look at me diving through those holes.
Couple of holes.
Means had to crawl through
because it's just not meant for all these tiny.
I just can't imagine that someone used to climb in
and out of there consistently.
(01:54:01):
Often.
Yeah.
But we got to take some good pictures up there.
There was a stamp, lots of kids.
It actually had a pretty nice beach.
And this was, we did an episode over this lighthouse.
This is the one that formed its own beach.
It used to be out on a breakwater that you would walk across.
And now you can see remnants of the breakwater
through the sand because the sand naturally
(01:54:21):
through hurricanes and storms built up
around this lighthouse and now it has its own beach.
But it wasn't that way originally.
So that's super cool.
Yeah.
Super cool to see.
Lots of evidence of like seashells and all kinds of stuff.
So yeah, that was a fun.
That one wasn't a guided tour.
You just get to walk up and down yourself.
It's $5 I think.
(01:54:42):
Nice lady in there.
Yeah, very nice.
Helped us with our stamps.
Mm-hmm.
So basically it would be rough.
Another one, if you have mobility problems,
you have to climb a ladder and crawl through holes.
Unfortunately, that's a recurring theme.
Yeah, but it wasn't made for people to come and see.
It was made for workers.
So you can see how they tried to make some adjustments
(01:55:05):
for more people to be able to come and visit,
but it's just impossible to make it totally.
They did warn us.
Yeah.
Right away, she's like, it's 60 whatever steps
and two small openings.
She's like, two people have fallen off the ladder.
So keep an eye out.
Be careful.
After that, we walked back to that coffee place
(01:55:27):
that we got coffee at.
I got a butterscotch latte, and you got just caramel latte.
So good, very good.
Sat on a bench with an old man, rested my feet.
I got bad feet.
One of these days, I'm going to be like a young, sprightly
human again, but it's coming.
I got to work on it.
You're getting working.
Yeah, working on it.
There's a lot of walking, but as a young woman,
(01:55:48):
I should be able to handle it, but I
had to stop a couple of times.
We did a lot.
I mean, it's been two hours of talking.
We've done a lot on this trip.
Yeah.
A lot of mobile stuff.
And we're not stopping.
No, we're not done yet.
So then we took a bus to Vineyard Haven
and walked to Martha's Vineyard Museum.
Big hike.
Big walk.
(01:56:09):
I was like, I don't know if it's because I was so tired already
of walking or because there wasn't a lot to see.
We were walking next to a road and rush.
So it wasn't really an exciting walk or anything,
but by the end, I was just so tired.
I was like, I need water.
I need to use the restroom.
(01:56:31):
And we had to hike up the side of this hill,
and then we found out that that wasn't even the entrance,
so we had to walk around anyway.
But it was $18 to go in.
You can get stamps at the front desk,
so I don't think you have to pay to get your stamps, at least.
But we paid.
It was kind of steep for what was inside,
but the building was super well taken care of.
(01:56:52):
I believe they just went through a big renovation.
So that's probably you're helping pay
for how nice it is on the inside.
There's a coffee shop.
And Gay Head's first order for Netherlands.
So it was so beautiful.
A lot of the Frinellins, as we saw on this trip
in other museums, were chipped, kind of beat up.
(01:57:14):
And this one had some chipping, but it
was in really great shape.
It's really, really well restored.
It's been used, for sure.
But we took pictures near it.
I mean, there's obviously one on screen,
but took pictures with us.
It is so big.
It is huge.
It is insane.
(01:57:34):
I was saying, it's really an $18, in my personal interest.
That's true.
$18 ticket to see this.
To see the lens.
Everything else is cool.
There's cool stuff.
There's interesting stories, and it's a well-done museum.
But the only thing that's shocking is this piece.
You can't put into perspective the size of this thing.
And they say it's 12 feet tall.
(01:57:56):
The glass is 12 feet tall.
Everything else was included.
Two stories.
The mechanism and all.
Probably 20 feet?
Two stories tall, yeah.
It was really so fun to see.
And as you walk, you can imagine what
it looked like as it rotated, because the glass is just
flickering through images upside down of what
it is on the other side.
(01:58:16):
So cool.
Yeah, it was cool.
And the red's nice, too.
We love red.
We love red.
That should be our motto.
We should have it in quotations on our website.
We love red.
No Coast USA, we love red.
We love red.
We have some cool stuff on the outside, too.
We have boats and all kinds of old memorabilia, shipwheels,
and seashells, and all kinds of fun stuff to see.
(01:58:38):
Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Yes, they had an extra, what's it called?
Exhibit.
Exhibit.
Yeah.
So we walked back to the bus and took that to Oak Bluffs.
We didn't really get to see Vineyard Haven all that much.
We thought that there wasn't much to see.
And then as we were waiting for the bus,
we realized we were missing out on a whole area of shops
(01:59:02):
and restaurants and stuff.
But we were tired.
We were tired.
We'd already missed one of the buses.
We had to get back.
We didn't get to see, so we just hung out at the bus stop
and waited to get to Oak Bluffs again.
The ferry was late for Island Queen,
and there was nowhere to sit and no shade.
So we were just hot and really corralled in there.
(01:59:24):
It was roped off so people could get off the ferry.
And I was standing in Vince's shadow
because he's really tall, and I get to capitalize on that.
But we were out of water, and oh my god, it was just hot.
And everybody was waiting.
Everyone was pressing to get on as fast as possible.
(01:59:44):
Again, I know it's pathetic to say,
but we didn't have lunch.
Yeah.
And we had breakfast.
I'm a fatty boy.
But we didn't have time, and we didn't
find a place that worked.
And it was like.
By this time, it's 4 PM, and we ate at 10 PM.
We just had a croissant sandwich.
So yeah, we were getting cranky or just wanted to go home.
(02:00:08):
So by the time we got on the ferry,
we got our seats in Vince.
You got these fancy waters.
Water that came in a paper container.
Cardboard, kind of.
That's another thing we noticed and actually really
appreciated about Cape Cod is there's
an effort to reduce plastic waste.
You couldn't get plastic bags, which at one point,
(02:00:29):
Vince needed a plastic bag.
So it was kind of like.
But really.
It turned out OK.
It doesn't matter.
It was paper bags or nothing.
Or water came in cardboard or metal canisters,
which I know are easier to recycle.
So I really enjoyed that.
I really appreciate it, because it didn't take away
from anything.
It had a little cost, but that's how it is.
(02:00:51):
Yeah.
And that's what I always think, too, about towns and stuff.
All you got to do is just be like, OK, plastic bags
are illegal.
People are not going to be happy about it.
It's going to be a hard turn from what you're used to.
But then you just get used to it.
If you forgot your reusable bags, you pay for paper,
and it's not a big deal.
(02:01:12):
I just feel like that should be a thing everywhere.
So I really appreciated that about Cape Cod.
It's that even if it's just one cape that's doing it,
it's crazy reducing it.
I mean, Beach Humber is kind of behind the scenes.
There's just too many humans on this Earth,
so we've got to do something.
But yeah, so I got those.
And then I got a Snickers bar, which is what I live on.
(02:01:33):
And then what did I get you?
You got me a muffin?
Yeah, just like a packaged.
It was a Danish, like a cheese Danish muffin.
It was like a gas station muffin.
But it was so good.
We were starving.
But yeah, that was our food on the boat.
Yeah.
So then after that, we got off the ferry.
(02:01:53):
We are still not done with the day.
We went to Nobska Lighthouse, which only
had about six parking spots.
So you have to really want it.
But we got lucky.
We got a spot.
It was after it was closed.
So that was kind of a bummer.
But it was beautiful.
And it's where we finished off our video
taking for the USLHS dance-off.
It was a gorgeous sight.
2024, baby.
But yeah, we did a little ballroom dancing
(02:02:16):
to finish it off together.
Did you pictures?
Yes.
Nobska.
Yeah.
Oh, and then dinner.
Yeah, dinner's coming.
I cannot believe we're not done with the day.
It's the hell of a day.
We did so much stuff on this trip.
It was insane.
So another thing is we're Vince.
Obviously, the Snickers bar is not
going to hold him over until dinner.
(02:02:37):
So we're desperately looking for pizza.
Oh, man.
Desperately looking for pizza.
We get my coffee at Starbucks, which I didn't really need.
But I just wanted something.
And we were just looking for a place that would just
have a slice of pizza for Vince.
And he comes back, and he's like, I just
want something for me.
Listen, I had seen several, like a dozen pizza places that
(02:03:02):
are by the slice.
That had slices.
And I'm like, Boston, maybe it's a pizza town.
I don't know.
I think New York is.
So maybe Northeast, they have their own.
Maybe Boston has a pizza.
Chicago's got pizza.
I don't know.
But I'm just a tourist.
I'm along for the ride.
And I see all these pizza places.
And I'm like, pizza, not something
I would get on this trip.
And then this one time, I'm just starving.
(02:03:23):
I'm like, oh, I find what is near Starbucks an awesome.
It looks so good.
And I went to their pickup window.
And I said, do you sell by the slice?
And she goes, no.
I was like, how long would I have to wait?
I asked her, how long would I have to wait for a pizza?
She goes, 45 minutes.
(02:03:43):
Like, I'm the asshole.
You irritated me.
I'm starving.
I'm just like, all right, thanks.
Walked away.
That was when I got in the car.
And I did something for me.
I just want something for me.
Such a bitch.
But yeah, I mean, if we had another day,
honestly, that pizza place looked like a legit spot,
like a sit down.
(02:04:04):
And whatever.
It is what it is.
Turned out fine.
Yeah, and after a long day of spending out and about,
we hadn't eaten anything since breakfast,
which was just mind blowing to me.
It was a disappointment.
But we just made it home.
It was like a 55 minute drive or something back from Nobska.
Took a shower, walked to Ocean House for dinner.
(02:04:26):
I wore my fun shoes.
I didn't take a picture.
Or I didn't put a picture up here of my fun shoes.
Got some pictures of your shoes.
Got them from Irregular Choice.
They had life rings on them.
And they were high platform sandals.
Very cute with my white dress.
(02:04:46):
But they ate up my feet.
Oh, the walk was five minutes from.
Quarter mile.
What was the hotel we were staying at?
Sea Shell Motel.
Sea Shell.
Oh, they ate up my feet.
They were just hard plastic.
They weren't broken in.
They were a little too small.
I should have sent them back.
But they're Irregular Choice is in the UK.
And they're very expensive shoes.
(02:05:08):
So I just suffered through it.
But the view from Ocean House is amazing.
It's very expensive.
So people are dressed nice.
The waiters are dressed nice.
Everything's white.
And the rest of the restaurants we've been to
have been very beachy themed.
So this was kind of nice that we were in a really, I don't know,
(02:05:32):
really nice restaurant.
Yeah.
I mean, we dressed nice.
It was like about $150 per person.
So people there with their kids, I'm just like, huh?
And at one point, I was that kid.
That's what I'm saying is I've been spoiled growing up.
At one point, it wouldn't have been a crazy thing for us
to go there on vacation.
And now that I'm paying the bills, I'm like, oh, how
are you doing this?
(02:05:53):
What job do you have?
What are they ordering?
What should I invest in?
Tell me, real estate.
Yeah.
And I don't say that bad.
I had a great time.
It was worth it.
It was a beautiful meal.
Yous were beautiful.
I don't think the drinks were not the high point of.
Which is crazy.
Yeah.
They were all a little weird.
Your old fashioned was good.
(02:06:14):
He got a classic old fashioned.
I got a kind of dragon fruit gin something.
So it was just really tart.
I didn't really drink much of it.
But for appetizers, they had these shrimp and lobster
corn dogs.
Lobster corn dogs.
It was so good.
And it wasn't just because I hadn't eaten anything.
It was just so delicious.
(02:06:35):
And then I got lobster ramen, basically.
I have a picture of it up on there.
So much.
There was a full lobster in there.
Oh, I forgot about this.
Lots of people were ordering steamed lobsters still
in the shell.
I don't know what it was.
It was their whiskers.
The lobster's whiskers were all curled from the steam.
(02:06:57):
And it's like their head is still on there.
And I was just like, oh no.
You know what they did?
You know what was happening?
What?
They cut off the heads, and they presented it
in the center of the dish as a presentation.
I actually talked with my coworkers about this at lunch.
No way.
I told them it bothered you.
And I was like, what other head do you serve?
I was just more pitying.
Something about their little whiskers
(02:07:18):
just made me so sad for them.
I was like, oh no, the lobster.
I guess I just prefer my animals to not obviously
be what it used to be.
Yeah, like shred it up.
Give me a full lobster in my ramen.
But don't give me the head where I'm like, oh.
And that was probably a $100 plate.
That was the expensive one.
Something really fancy.
Full of the two pound main lobster.
(02:07:41):
I'm sure it was.
My dad's even more extreme in this.
But if I'm reading a menu and all the drinks are like,
oh, you had me.
And then you had mint, pepper, sea salt in a drink.
And I'm like, no, it was an old fashioned.
Don't add mint, pepper, sea salt.
What are you doing?
Or there's a pasta.
(02:08:01):
And it's like, what's Thai basil?
What's Thai basil?
Is it hot?
Is it spicy basil?
Well, then there's like seafood alfredo.
And it's got Gucci sauce.
I'm like, what the shit is Gucci sauce?
Should I know that?
Am I poor?
I just had to go on a little walk to calm down.
Honestly, I was like, I was so excited to go
(02:08:22):
to this fancy restaurant.
It's our last night there.
I'm paying the bill.
It's a big deal.
And then I got this long list of weird ass drinks.
And I'm like, can the bar make an old fashioned with bourbon?
Like a normal, like not to be, I don't think I was rude.
But I was like an old fashioned with bourbon.
No, you weren't rude.
And she's like, yeah.
(02:08:43):
We have, and she named a couple of bourbons.
She started with Blanton's, which would have been,
that would have been like a $60 drink.
What did you get?
There's Angel's and the?
I got Maker's Mark, which is their bottom shelf.
Which is, it's not a bad bourbon, but it's like,
here it's nicer.
It's middle of the road.
(02:09:04):
Anyways, it was a really good meal.
I can't even tell you what I got, forgotten.
What did you get?
It was a pasta, I think.
No.
Cause they added shrimp to it.
Oh, it was a ravioli.
Yeah, that's right.
You got a ravioli with them.
Lobster ravioli.
Is three okay when you asked to add shrimp
and you're like, yeah.
(02:09:24):
Yeah, cause adding three shrimp was $20 or something.
Yeah, like are you asking me if I wanna double it?
Are you asking me if I want one more shrimp?
Like what are you asking me?
Outstanding, bring me 12 of them.
It's funny, I want 14 of them right now.
14 of them right now.
Do you know what you're eating?
I don't wanna know.
I don't know if we're not made for fancy restaurants.
(02:09:45):
It's not that we're young, I don't think,
because something about it, I just feel out of place.
I feel comfortable, but I'm definitely like,
I'm not their usual people coming in here.
Well, I think it's all perspective.
Like for example, I keep saying
that I had a privileged childhood.
I got to go cool places, see cool things.
How much do we have on that thing left?
(02:10:07):
23.
23 minutes?
Yeah.
Wow.
We'll be okay.
We're running out our SD card on our interface.
I'll just be brief, but I've been spoiled.
I've gotten to travel, but I grew up in a smaller town
in Western Kansas.
So like going to Colorado and California to see my family
and Chicago to see my sister who was in school.
(02:10:29):
Like I got to go to nice places.
So I have friends now today,
we're in the same socioeconomic circles.
We have the same type of job.
And I am like, come on, get an appetizer.
Come on, get a cocktail.
We're out for dinner already.
We're already here, spend the money.
But that's their prerogative, of course.
And they probably have a lot more savings than we have.
(02:10:51):
They probably do.
But, and then you go here and I'm like,
oh, there's a whole nother level.
This is something else.
There's probably levels on top of this that we can't even,
you know, the private golf course we can't even go to.
The yacht that we saw when we were getting
on the Island Queen Ferry, we paid our $27 per person.
(02:11:13):
And we were looking at this yacht that has boats on it.
Hilarium.
A different type of boat for different types of.
Outings that you want to take, like a speedboat
and a fishing boat and like.
Jet ski.
Everything is wood.
There's a guy out there polishing the railing.
Poker table in the back deck.
With all these wicker, nice wicker chairs and everything
(02:11:34):
in the back of a boat.
We were just staring at it, waiting for the boat,
the ferry to take off.
And we were like, huh, that's somebody's boat.
Everybody around us is like, well,
just take that thing and live on that.
How many millions, hundreds of millions is that worth?
You know, everyone next to us is saying the same thing.
We're all going to the same place.
But it's like.
(02:11:55):
We all pay the same for our little ferry tickets.
There's another, I looked at other golf courses
outside of Highland.
There's another one near Dennisport.
I can't remember what it's even called.
Like one of the guys I talked to knew about it.
But it was $1,600 per night to stay there.
The cheapest room.
The cheapest room.
And.
Oh, room.
(02:12:16):
The cheapest room.
$1,600 a night.
A night.
And you can golf.
I think the, to play 18 was $350 if you were staying there.
What?
It's a golf resort.
Like that's what you do there.
There's also boats in a pool and a restaurant.
It blows my mind that they charge you more
than just your room to golf somewhere
(02:12:38):
that's obviously for golfing.
Yeah.
What?
Now, I don't see that.
Oh, you said that they like need a caddy and everything.
Yeah.
If you, if that's part of the fee is a caddy.
I don't know anything.
I mean, I've only played once with a caddy
and I was paid for by a different company.
It wasn't my bill, but the,
I think you tipped a hundred dollars for the round.
(02:12:59):
Probably even more at this place.
And that was in Kansas somewhere.
So maybe people are listening and they just,
they're smiling like, oh, these children.
Yeah.
But like, hey guys.
We're by no means wealthy.
Like we loosen the purse strings to spend a hundred dollars
like at a meal.
It's a big, big time for us.
Yeah.
We're, we're, we're excited to do that.
But it was a lot of fun.
(02:13:20):
Yeah. And then we got desserts at the end.
I don't know what we were thinking,
but we each got a dessert.
I've, I've never been so full at the end of this meal.
I got coffee creme brulee.
You got a whole apple pie.
Blueberry apple pie.
With ice cream on top.
With ice cream that was made from local honey.
We were living the dream.
(02:13:41):
Then we walked back and I got these, I still have,
I'm still sporting the scab from one,
but I had just beastly blisters.
She skinned her toes with these shoes.
I've got to post a picture of these shoes.
They're like hard plastic.
They look like they're not meant to be worn.
They've got stuff all over.
(02:14:02):
They're 3D.
Dang it.
Like.
Yeah. There, if you look up a regular choice,
it's made to be tacky, just really out there shoes.
Shoes that people don't wear out, but.
And if a regular choice
or the ocean house wants to sponsor us, please reach out.
Yeah.
Cause I've spent a lot of money on shoes.
I've spent about $500 on their shoes now.
(02:14:22):
And.
Nothing.
They're amazing.
Poor people.
It was worth it.
I know the walk was painful and it was slow
because I was bleeding out of several places on my feet,
but it was worth it.
I enjoyed it.
So then Vince floated the idea that we cancel
our walking tour in Boston the next day.
I knew we weren't going to go.
I just jumped all over it.
(02:14:43):
I was like, yes, cancel it.
So we just ate the cost of that.
We were going to go on a walking tour,
revolutionary road, road to revolution or something.
Where we would see like Paul Revere's house
and like a lot, it would have been really awesome.
It would have been great.
But my legs, I was just kind of,
I was kind of over the walking,
especially after Martha's Vineyard, having to take breaks
and stuff, a two hour walking tour
(02:15:03):
didn't sound like I was going to make it.
And we also got warned off of it by the old jail guy
who was like, oh, you're wanting to drive there
at that time, like, oh, I wouldn't recommend it.
And we're like, oh.
Yeah, it was on a Monday.
We don't know.
And our flight was at 4 p.m.
Yeah, and he's like, oh, good.
You have a later flight, that's good.
And we're like, well, we're going to drive early to
(02:15:26):
Yeah, we're going to go on the walking tour.
And he was like, oh, I wouldn't suggest that.
And we're like, what?
We don't know.
He probably had a good point.
I assumed Monday would be like a safe day,
but he said that like people extend their vacation,
their weekend, and then drive up back to Boston
Monday morning.
There was a time, there was a time,
I remember it was 12 36 p.m.
(02:15:47):
So it's noon.
And there was stopped traffic on a six lane highway.
That was on the way, right?
Yeah, and I was like, wait, for a minute,
I thought it was rush hour.
And I was like, no.
And then I was like, and I'm from a small city.
So now I'm like, oh, it's lunch.
Like people are going, I was like, not on the highway.
In the middle in between, it wasn't like we were in Boston
(02:16:09):
during lunch rush hour.
It's just how busy it is.
In between.
It's just that many people.
Yeah, so we canceled our little walking tour, slept in,
went to the beach for a little bit.
Vince finally got in the water.
I did.
Why are people not swimming?
Yeah, no one swims in Cape Cod.
Nobody.
I saw two people in the water total.
On all the beaches we went to, nobody swims.
(02:16:30):
Is it sharks?
Is it seaweed?
I don't know.
Is it cold?
I don't know.
It didn't feel that cold.
It wasn't cold.
It was colder in California, I think.
It was cold in Rehoboth Beach
when I went to Delaware.
Yeah.
Well, but that was earlier in the season too.
Well, by a week.
Oh really?
My brain is broken.
I was living it up in August.
(02:16:51):
I was living the dream just all over the place.
Lighthouse Central.
But yeah, nobody's swimming.
It was interesting.
So Vince went and swam.
I got my pants all wet.
So then we pinned them in the windows,
flapping outside of the vehicle.
And we had them spread out on the hood of our car.
We decided to do some lunch at Cafe Chu.
(02:17:17):
Oh yeah, that was good.
In Sandwich.
We stopped on the way, yeah, in Sandwich.
Sandwich.
Sandwich is what we looked up.
We went down a rabbit hole of research
on where Sandwich came from.
Did this town come before the Sandwich?
And the answer is yes.
Yep.
The Earl, the fourth Earl of Sandwich
came up with the Sandwich.
(02:17:41):
And it became the thing.
And the town was originally named Sandwick, I believe.
Anyway, basically a sandy place is what that means.
So yeah, we looked all deep into it.
And then we got sandwiches at Cafe Chu.
They were fantastic.
Yeah, I had a grilled cheese, grilled ham and cheese.
And it came with chips.
(02:18:02):
Oh!
I have a picture right here.
Cafe Chu, sandwiches, sandwiches.
It doesn't look as good as it was, to be honest with you.
Well, I took a picture after I had digged in a little bit.
And from the top is never as good.
You don't get the layers.
But it was really delicious.
Yeah, they had a fun system where you get
like a reservation card to reserve your table,
(02:18:22):
but then you go order at the counter
and they bring it out to you later.
So everyone is super friendly.
It just, it was really nice.
They're good at tourism.
They're ready to manage tourism.
And this meal wasn't over a hundred dollars,
so we could appreciate that.
Hey!
Lots of bees wouldn't leave me alone.
Just a classic theme of the trip was bees landing on me.
(02:18:44):
And I'm like, Vince, Vince, there's a bee!
But I kept my cool, all calm.
Always.
Then we drove back up, turned our rental car
and spent a lot of time at the airport.
The flight was delayed.
Did, yeah.
I read my entire book on this trip.
Made it home, back to work, back to paying off those bills.
(02:19:06):
We got a water burger on the way home.
What a burger!
That was good.
It's good to be back in America.
Home by 9 p.m.
The cats were very excited to see us.
We had someone checking in on them, but missed them.
I get worried.
They're our biggest fans.
Yeah.
They don't listen to our podcasts,
but they're our biggest fans.
(02:19:26):
Oh my gosh, so that was our Cape Cod trip.
Holy cow.
I did not think that this talk was gonna be
so long.
Yeah.
I mean, it was a nice trip.
It was five days.
It's the right amount of time.
I thought longer would be better.
I don't think so.
No.
I just love golf.
I kind of suck at it, but.
We could have fit in one day in between
that was just chilling.
Just beach time, some local eats,
(02:19:49):
not moving too far away from the motel.
We just have to be selective.
Yeah.
If you really wanna get stamps, that's one thing, but man.
Not every day of the trip.
Or just in the future, just stop and take a picture
if you're driving by one and you don't have time.
And then you can send that in to get a stamp if you want.
Yeah, most of them are mail.
You can mail in your stamp.
I get mailed stamps.
(02:20:10):
We are the lighthouse slow down.
So we did lighthouse things.
Yeah, we went all out.
It was so worth it, but it was definitely exhausting.
So I'm on the fence about whether or not I go back
just because I would have to make it
a different experience than what we did,
which lesson learned.
You did warn me and I was all in on stamps,
but we had a great time.
We did it.
(02:20:30):
Loved it.
People were so nice.
Traffic was not as bad as I thought,
but it was definitely like being in a tunnel
the whole time with the trees and everything.
But yeah, this is fun.
I enjoyed taking notes of my trip.
It wasn't, it's not, this is not a blog.
Blog.
Yeah.
It's not a blog.
We didn't know.
Plog, this is a blog.
(02:20:51):
Guaranteed though.
Podcast, blog.
Guaranteed we are gonna do another episode
on lighthouse tourism.
We're getting to be some of the youngest
lighthouse tourists in the world.
That's what I keep hearing.
Yeah.
So we'll take you along for the ride.
It'll be a good time.
We've got to get some sponsors.
