In this episode we take a deep dive on the subject of vampire lore. We look at its origins and how even today it still haunts our modern pop culture.
A vampire is a creature from folklore that subsists by feeding on the vital essence (generally in the form of blood) of the living. In European folklore, vampires are undead creatures that often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighborhoods they inhabited while they were alive. They wore shrouds and were often described as bloated and of ruddy or dark countenance, markedly different from today's gaunt, pale vampire which dates from the early 19th century.
We also talk about Mercy Brown - A quick overview of the story that introduced the first lady of blood!
Folk Figure, Hysteria Victim. The second of three children born to George and Mary Brown, she lived a quiet life in the rural New England town of Exeter until an epidemic of Tuberculosis took the northeastern states by force. Prior to her death the disease had claimed hundreds of lives in the area as well as the lives of her mother and sister. Unfortunately by the time of her death her brother Edwin had also fallen ill. Families like the Browns were losing children and spouses quickly and had been in the grip of this terrible disease for many years. A combination of the ignorance of the theories of epidemiology and the simple folk superstition prone to the area produced an alternative to the unknown germ theories at that time; Mercy must be a vampire.
