Ever wondered why life can often seem like a never-ending pursuit of fleeting, temporary objects? Our latest episode unpacks the profound wisdom found in 2 Corinthians 4:18, challenging us to reorient our gaze from the temporal to the eternal. Unable to ignore Corinth's striking resemblance to our contemporary society, we dissect the epistle's relevance today, reminding us to shift our focus from the transitory to something of more significant value – our hope in something far greater than worldly possessions.

Chris Grainger (00:03):
Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast
serving Christian men who arehungry to be the leaders God
intends you to be.
I'm your host, chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
Our guy spiritual kickoff time, excited to have you here.
So let's get right into theword.
So we're going to be in thebook of 2 Corinthians.
Okay, 2 Corinthians, chapter 4,verse 18.
So we fix our eyes.
Now I don't know what it seemedor what it's unseen, since what

(00:27):
is seen is temporary, but whatis unseen is eternal Love.
That verse, fellas.
We're going to unpack that hereand see how we can simplify and
apply this to our life to helpyou be the leader God intends
you to be.
Okay, now, first thing we needto know we're in 2 Corinthians.
I know sometimes you getconfused, like man.
I don't know where these dogbooks of the Bible are.

(00:49):
Don't worry, chill out.
So just go to your NewTestament.
Okay, find your New Testament.
Usually it's the notary in yourBible.
You know you'll have that breakin the New Testament, usually a
couple of pages or one pagethat says New Testament.
So then you have your gospels, you have Matthew, mark, luke and
John, then after that you getto Acts, then Romans, and after
you pass Romans, you get the 1stand 2nd Corinthians.
Okay, so that's really whereyou're going to find us, and

(01:11):
we're not in 1st, we're in 2ndCorinthians.
So what's going on in thisletter?
Here is a letter that Paulwrote to Corinth.
Okay, and you can kind of thinkof Corinth as like the Las
Vegas back in the day.
Right, there were a lot ofthings going on.
They did what they wanted to do, they liked it.
If it felt good, hey, let'sjust do it.
Right.
And it was full, full ofimmorality.

(01:33):
You know, there's a reason theysay what happens in Vegas stays
in Vegas.
Right, the same thing was goingto Corinth.
Maybe they even had shirts thatsaid that.
Right, I don't know, but it maysound familiar to you.
And the reason it should, because it hits very close from
home.
Okay, now, this is actually 2Corinthians, but actually it's
believed that Paul potentiallywrote four letters total, and
these are just the two that werefound.

(01:55):
Okay, so, either way, there aretons of wisdom, tons of insight
for us here that we candirectly apply it to our wall,
fellas.
So we'll go back up a verse aswe look at this and really think
through how we can, can, canapply the previous teachings
from Paul to better understandthis verse.
So what he's doing before thispower minds his readers to not

(02:16):
lose heart because our inner manis being renewed day by day.
Okay, and then he also flat outsays that the outer man is
decaying and we don't like tothink about this, but the
reality is it exists.
Right, it really does.
Let's face it the more birthdaycandles you have on your
birthday cake, the more likelythat things are starting to get

(02:37):
stiff.
Right, you got to have morenaps.
You can feel that physical tollon your body.
You know, sometimes you got tohave that time all smoothly just
to get going.
You know, and we just need tounderstand that our bodies,
they're constantly being worndown.
We're wearing them out.
They're being used to,hopefully, we're using them to
do God's work, but they'rewearing out.
Okay, and the same thing wassaid for Paul, right, and you

(03:00):
know, paul felt immensepersecution, you know, because
he was pointing so many peopleto the good news of the gospel.
He absolutely was gettinghammered over and over and over.
Right, and we need to rememberthat.
Okay.
So when we get to this versehere today, it makes me a kind
of immediately puts a little bitmore perspective and focus into

(03:22):
my wall.
Okay, so think about it asbelievers.
I hope lies in something fargreater, far, far greater than
anything that can be found hereon earth.
I don't care if you're crushingit in your career.
I mean, you live in a mansion, you got all the cars you got,
you got the girl your dreams.
There's so much more waitingfor us, as believers, than any

(03:44):
of those things.
Any of those things, okay, because all that stuff is going
on here, fellas, ultimately isyou're chasing happy, you're
chasing happy, and happy is whathappiest times, your
circumstances, and guess whatCircumstances change, right, I
don't care, from houses, cars, money, all the stuff we just
talked about, the, even theweather, right, I know, the

(04:06):
other day it was raining, thistoday is the sun shining, and
how many times do we let theweather affect our happiness?
Right, and we got to remember, man, if the happiest times are
circumstances, there's got to besomething else, and it is.
It is because I aren't a what, all the physical things that
we're just been talking abouthere, that we want to hold,

(04:26):
possess, that drove that drivesso many decisions that we try to
make right, and we want more.
We want more.
We want more because the worldtells us what, whoever has the
most tough winds, right?
Well, who made that rule up?
Is my question.
Well, who says whoever, whoeverdies with the most tough wins?
Well, oh, they still die andthey still face eternity.

(04:48):
And this can bring us so muchdisappointment, fellas.
I'm telling you because theinner day, it doesn't really
matter what what's under thatdog on Christmas tree of ours.
No, what matters is therelationship with those that are
around that far surpasses whatyou have underneath it.
And Paul is teaching them righthere in this, in this verse, to
get our eyes off of the shinyand temporary things Right that

(05:13):
drive us and put our eyes onsomething of more significant
value.
Think about that for a second.
If we let our actions be drivenwith the Holy Spirit reveals to
us, okay, if we actually letthat and we make a commitment to
every day, chase him, chaseJesus, then we can find that joy

(05:35):
right here on earth today, whatever day you're listening to
this, you can find that joy.
And a cool part about joy it'snot tied to your circumstances.
It doesn't matter about what'sgoing on around you, okay, it's
tied to your relationship wehave with your heavenly father.
That's what truly matters Rightnow.

(05:55):
I've got chooses to bless youfinancially and I hope that he
does.
Great if he.
If he chooses to bless you withgood health, great if he
chooses to bless you with aWonderful family and a bunch of
growing kids and all thisabundance around you, that is
wonderful, wonderful, but wedidn't.
You got your member.
All those blessings aretemporary nature.

(06:17):
They just are.
They really are.
We has to focus on the itemsthat he desires, like building
those relationships with others, and do it all we can do to
share the good news of thegospel With as many people as
possible, because we have tobring as many people to heaven
with us.
Fellas, that's our call, that'sthe great commission.

(06:38):
We have to go, therefore, andshare with others and point them
to the Lord.
Jesus Right, and if we alignour actions with his directives
and focus on the eternal impactthe eternal impact, not the
temporary you could directlyright here, fellas, today, I
Start being obedient with youractions.

(07:01):
And from there, that's when youstart unleashing the loud end.
You hear me talk about it allthe time unleashed the loud end.
What does that mean?
That means bringing more andmore people to the goodness of
the gospel by sharing what JesusChrist has done through you
right now.
Right now, fellas.
So we don't fix our eyes onwhat's seen it's not about what
we see right here but on what'sunseen our relationship with our

(07:22):
Savior.
Because I'm telling you, thetemporary stuff that's gonna
fade, that's gonna go away, that's gonna rust, that's gonna
decay, but the unseen, theunseen that's eternal.
That's what I care about andthat's what I want you to focus
on and hopefully, prayerfully, the Holy Spirit speaking to you
right now to let go of thosetemporary things that are

(07:43):
holding you down.
And chasing the fancy, chasingthe shiny Remember old fish hook
analogy you guys hear me talkabout this in the past.
That fish hook looks reallygood, it's shiny, it's sparkly.
A lot of these things make alot of noise and it's so
irresistible to that fish andman.
I'm sure it feels so good inthat moment to take that bite of

(08:04):
that fish hook until that fishfinds out there's a hook in it.
And that's what we have to becareful of.
There's so many things in thisworld that look great, look
enticing, and when we take thatbite we find that there's a hook
there.
So just don't chase, thetemporary Focus on the eternal
and then lean into that and atleast allow it.

(08:26):
Then, all right now, I want youto think about this question
this week.
Here's your question this weekwhat holds eternal significance
versus mere passing moments?
Think about that, the eternalsignificance in your life.
What holds that Versus just thestuff, our circumstances that
pass, that change to go up, togo down?

(08:48):
You know you can have goodthings that happen, but you're
gonna have bad things thathappen too.
It's just reality.
So think about that.
Okay, now for you guys out therewho have never put your trust
or surrender your life to theLordship of Jesus Christ, you
have an opportunity.
Your opportunity is today is tosay you know what I've been

(09:10):
trying to do, this thing calledlife my way, and it's not
working.
Maybe you're hurting, maybeyou're tired, maybe you're just
tired of chasing, you're tiredof running, and if that's the
case, you've never submitted tothe Lordship of Jesus.
I'm gonna give you a chance todo that today, but you need to
know, if you think you need toknow, what you're doing right,
understand what you aresubmitting to.

(09:30):
And it starts off with admission.
You have to admit that you're asinner.
You're not a mistake or need ofa life coach.
No, you're also not a cupcake.
That's no flak or a skittle.
No, you're a sinner and need ofa savior.
That's it.
And a sin is anything thatseparates us from God.
And there's nothing that youcan do, fellas, nothing you can
do that can build that bridgebetween sin and God on our own.

(09:52):
So you can't help thousand oldladies across the road.
You can't give to all thesecharities that do great things.
You can't just good way, nice, your way into it Doesn't work
that way.
Now should you still help oldladies and give to charity?
Absolutely okay.
But so far it's your salvation.
That's something you can't earn.
You can't earn it.
So that's the first thing, isthat admission?

(10:15):
Then you have to believe thatyou truly believe that Jesus is
the Son of God.
Not that he's some cool teacheror rabbi or miracle worker.
Nope, jesus is the Son of God.
Now you have to actuallybelieve that.
You can't just say the words, you have to believe that in your
heart.
And when he came down fromheaven and took on a flesh and

(10:36):
walked with us and taught us andgave us all these parables and
these teachings, and obviouslyhe performed the miracles and
the signs, but ultimately, whenhe went to Calvary and was
crucified for us, that when hepushed up on his nail pierced
feet, he was thinking about you.
He loved you, right then, rightthere.
And when they put him to deathand his blood ran, that blood

(11:00):
ran for you.
And that covers all the sins, that all the sins of the world
were paid for when God's Son wassacrificed.
Then, three days after thatthat was three days he rose, he
overcame death and right nowthat he ascended to heaven, he's
sitting right at the right handof the Father.
And, guys, you have to believein your heart that Jesus is the

(11:22):
Son of God.
Then what do you have to do?
We just got confessed to theLord.
That's simple.
At that point, once you admityou're a sinner and you believe
that he is the Son of God, youconfess him as Lord.
And once you confess to thisLord, guys, ah, the Holy Spirit
comes and it adheres to you.
We call it the lion within.
It's right there and you're atthat moment.
You are ready to go out and dothe work that he has called you

(11:46):
to do.
The blinders are off, thebattle is on, but you're not
alone, fellas.
So, if you're ready to acceptJesus as your Lord savior, today
is your day.
Let's pray together, so follow.
Just thank you right now.
For whoever's listening, I justpray blessings for them.
I pray that, lord, that theyunderstand that they are a
center and need of a savior, they understand that you are the

(12:09):
Son of God and they wannaconfess you as Lord over their
life right now, god.
So I just pray peace over thatperson who's listening right now
, who is confessing you as theirsavior.
I pray you guide and directthem, that you give them wisdom
and discernment.
I pray you just touch them in away that they can feel your
presence.
God, I pray you put people intheir path.

(12:32):
That will help them, that willguide them, that will direct
them, that will keep them headedtowards you.
I pray you open doors that needto be open for them, shut the
ones that need to be shut andjust give them that special
anointing to get out.
Do what you call them do.
We pray all this according toyour will in Jesus name, amen.
All right, so if you justaccept the Christ as your savior
, hallelujah, welcome to theteam.

(12:54):
I'm good to have you here.
Here's what I want you to do.
I want you to send me an emailsupport at thelionwithanus.
