Disaster struck Western North Carolina when Hurricane Helene tore through communities, leaving devastation in its wake. This catastrophic event revealed a sobering truth about church disaster response – sometimes well-meaning Christians become what relief expert Daniel calls "the second disaster" after the initial crisis. Despite having compassionate hearts, many volunteers lack the training and coordination needed to truly serve effectively.

Chris Grainger (00:03):
Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast
serving Christian men who arehungry to be the leaders God
intends you to be.
I'm your host, chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, guys, fun Fridaytime, let's get into it, okay?
So the scripture of the weekthis week is in the book of Luke
, chapter 10, verse 37.
The expert in the law replied, talking to Jesus, the one who
had mercy on him.
Jesus told him go and dolikewise.

(00:26):
So, guys, important scripturefor us as Christian men to know
first and foremost.
And then we need to know howcan we apply that.
What does that actually meanfor our life?
I'd encourage you, if you don'tknow, go back to the Spiritual
Kickoff episode It'll be twopodcasts back in your podcast
feed and listen.
Just try to give some practicalinsights how you can take that,

(00:48):
simplify and apply it to yourlife.
That's what it's all about.
Again, we do this every day, monday through Friday, within
the Lion Within Us community.
So, again, go to thelionwithinus If you just need a
little boost.
Each and every day, we're here.
This is what we do.
This is how we serve.
All right.
Now, our last episode was verypowerful because we talked about
directly how we should all beunited when crisis hit Not if

(01:13):
but when, because crisis are allaround us.
There's people in need at alltimes.
Living in North Carolina, wegot to see this firsthand,
unfortunately, this year, whenHurricane Helene came through
and absolutely just devastatedwestern North Carolina, and we
were able to equip and go outand put you know on the plow, if

(01:34):
you will, to go do the workthat God called us to do, and
that was such an importantopportunity for us guys and we
were able to respond in that waybecause you know what God.
He just made it clear on myheart that you know what you
have to step up and whatDaniel's doing.
He's built an organization tobring churches together so when

(01:56):
things do happen, they'll beable to go out and serve in an
effective way, not be ahindrance either.
Like he actually said, thechurch's the second disaster
that happens after disasterbecause so many people are not
qualified.
They don't know what they'redoing and maybe they're saying
the wrong things or you knowjust.
Sometimes, quite frankly, you're just in the way.
I saw this firsthand in WesternNorth Carolina.

(02:19):
There was too many people therethat had the right heart.
They didn't have the skillsthat were needed to help the
people in that moment.
So love what Daniel's doing.
Obviously, he is an expert inthis.
This is he dedicated his lifeto this.
Go back and listen to hisepisode, fellas.
Hopefully you'll find someencouragement there.
Okay, all right.
So now let's for our fun Friday.
We always talk about health, wealth and self tips.

(02:41):
Now, health is how do we buildstronger minds and bodies to do
what God's called us to do?
Wealth is how do we be betterstewards Remember that word
stewards of our finances andultimately fulfill our careers
in a way that honor andglorifies God?
Self is how do we equipourselves to grow as husbands
and fathers?
That's what it's all about, because if we can do those areas

(03:11):
, man, we're going to make a big, big impact.
All right, so now for thehealth tip.
Think about this Again thewhole idea of serving, serving
through your strength.
God gave you a unique ability.
First of all, he made you male, right?
That means we should take careof our body so that, when things
happen, we can go out and wecan serve others with absolute
dedication.
I saw this firsthand A coupleof our volunteers one of them
was 72 when we went to do ourdisaster relief trip and every

(03:36):
day, for 10 to 12 hours a day.
This man's out there running achainsaw, doing all the heavy
lifting, moving logs around,right.
But he was in shape, he tookcare of his body so that when
the time came, he stepped up.
He absolutely stepped up.
So that means sometimes, fellas, we'll have to commit to a

(03:57):
routine your regular exercise, cardio, weightlifting, stuff
like that that when things dohappen, we're physically
equipped and ready to meet thedemands of the services that are
that's in front of us.
You know the whole questioncomes up.
You know, if you would have hadto run a mile a day for a lower
, could you do it?
Well, I don't know if God'sgoing to make you run a mile a

(04:18):
day, but he may.
And if that does happen, areyou doing what you need to do
right now to be prepared forwhen that does happen?
For me, I can't say I loverunning.
I like running.
I don't love it, but I do it sothat when a day comes and I
know God's going to call me todo some work, I want to be able
to do it and fulfill it, tohonor and glorify Him.

(04:39):
Now, sometimes, I must admit, Ireally enjoy being on the trail
, but day in, day out, grinding, grinding, like this morning.
I'm lifting weights strengthtraining as well and I did not
want to lift weights thismorning, didn't want to do it.
We lift early, it's likequarter to five.
It's early, right, we have todo it before we do horse chores.

(04:59):
But you know what I'm doing itnot because I want to look
better in some mirror.
No, I want to be able to honorand glorify God and do the
things he's called me to do whenthey come across my plate.
And that means I need to putthat work in right now.
And, guys, that's what we haveto do.
We have to put the work in sothat we'll be ready.
All right.
Now, wealth tip that investmentin others is such a big deal.

(05:23):
Okay, and again, we're talkingabout stewardship and our time
and our money and things likethat.
But when we invest and we sitdown and we help others grow
their financial and theirgeneral knowledge around
finances, it's a big deal.
You're making a big kingdomimpact, because not many people
have the financial mentors thatthey can trust, that they can

(05:46):
rely on.
So maybe you're coming alongand you're really God's blessed
you from an entrepreneurialjourney, maybe you're a business
owner.
Well, find opportunities whereyou can to seek out and support
and help that up and comingentrepreneur who's on their path
right.
And maybe it could be findingopportunities to get involved in

(06:07):
supporting someone financiallyin a critical moment in their
life, maybe paying for theirgroceries or you're helping to
just you pay a light bill for amonth.
But each time we make thatinvestment in others, we're
glorifying God and God's goingto multiply that.
He's going to bless it 100%.
But it's about bringing theright mindset of stewardship

(06:31):
into how can I invest what Godhas given me to others?
And if you just bring that toGod, I don't know the best way
to get to handle the situation, but I know you do.
I just want to honor andglorify you.
Please show it to me.
He's going to show that to you.
He will All right.
Now self-tip Think about theway that you lead your family.

(06:51):
Again, you've been handpicked bya guy to lead your family you
need.
We should all strive to modelcompassion for our kids.
They should see that, becausekids learn through watching.
Let's just be real there.
Remember, more is caught thantaught.
Fellas.
They're watching, so they can.
If you want compassionate kids.
They're going to watch, they'regoing to learn that the best by

(07:13):
seeing how are youcompassionate to others.
It's just plain and simple facts.
So maybe the whole love thyneighbor you know, we all know
what that is in the bible right?
Maybe they should actually seeyou love, you love your neighbor
through acts of service to them.
Maybe and look, you don't haveto get complicated with maybe
just go clean the yard out, right, or?
Or you go out there and youhelp them clean the garage, or

(07:35):
you just give them a call hey,I'm gonna make a trash.
Can I take your trash for you?
Simple stuff like that can besuch a big deal.
And those actions show yourkids that you're not just
talking out of one side of yourmouth and doing something else
with the other.
No, no, it all has to cometogether.
You can't say be generous andthen you don't.

(07:55):
They never see any actualgenerosity.
You know what I'm saying?
It doesn't make any sense.
So we have to make sure thatwe're doing what we can to put
that in place, to put that inpractice, to let our children be
part of the journey.
And, quite frankly, someone whoserves my kids and try to and
tries to do this as often aspossible.
That's where the rubber meetsthe road the most.
It's when they're side by side, they're with dad and they're

(08:18):
seeing him do this and, as aleader of your family, which you
are, they're relying on you todo this, guys.
So, fellas, lean into it.
All right.
There's your health, wealth andself.
Again, quick reminders Servethrough strength.
Guys, we've got to equip ourbodies so that we can go do the
hard work, a lot of the workthat Daniel talked about.
A lot of the work that Danieltalked about.
That wealth tip is investing inothers, making sure that we're

(08:39):
doing all we can to just providethat wisdom, that biblical
stewardship, wisdom, insightsthat he's given us to other
people.
And then that self tip ismodeling that compassion for our
families, fellas.
So book of the week this week, obviously, is United in Crisis.
Right, here's a copy, fellas.
A true story of God'smiraculous power working through
a united network of churches,by Daniel Go, check this one out

(08:59):
.
This is a great one.
Get this.
Here's an idea.
Get this book for your pastorsor your leaders in your church
and just give it to them.
Here's a resource I think wemay want to consider to look at.
I know we want to be proactivein serving others.
Have you heard about United inCrisis and what they're doing?
You just lay that out there.
Maybe your only step in allthis is giving the book and

(09:22):
giving it to the pastor, andthen that's all God's asked you
to do.
And then, guess what?
If that's what he's asked youto do, be obedient in that.
Now, if he's asked you to takethis and actually apply it, be
obedient in that too.
All right, all right, fellas.
So let's get to our dad jokes ofthe week.
So we got two dad jokes for you.
Dad joke number one why did thebaker share his bread?

(09:45):
The baker, okay, well, becausehe needed the help.
Get it, needed the help.
All right, I guess you have toexplain it.
Maybe you don't get it, butanyway, that's number one.
Number two why don'telectricians sit on the
sidelines?
Hmm, because they know how toconduct themselves.
Come on now.
Now, as an electrical engineer,I think that was pretty funny,
but that's just me.
So that's it, number one andnumber two.
Number one why did the bakershare his bread?

(10:06):
Because he needed the help.
Number two why don'telectricians sit on the
sidelines?
Because they know how toconduct themselves.
So, fellas, again, our rolestotally count each and every
week, and if you have a dad jokethat you want us to use that we
haven't used yet, support atthe lion withinus.
