Chris Grainger (00:03):
Welcome to the
Lion Within Us, a podcast
serving Christian men who arehungry to be the leaders God
intended you to be.
I'm your host, chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, guys, fun Fridayepisode.
I'm excited to be here with you.
Let's get right into it, okay?
So Scripture of the Week thisweek is in Psalm 78, verse 4.
It says we will not hide themfrom their descendants.
We will tell them the nextgeneration.
(00:24):
I'm sorry, so it's a beautifullittle verse, fellas, because
this week we're really talkingso much just about being a
father, being a parent.
What does that look like?
Go back a few, two episodes agofor our spiritual kickoff for
this week.
I took some time to unpack thisone at length to try to give
(00:44):
you some ideas on how you cansimplify and apply this to your
life.
And again, if you'd like that, the spiritual kickoffs in that
format and kind of how we justreally just give those insights
and those reflections.
We do it every day, mondaythrough Friday, within the Lion
Within Us community.
So I'd love for you to headover there to the lionwithinus
and start your subscription nowto be part of what we're doing
(01:05):
inside the Lion Within Uscommunity.
All right, so now.
Our last episode was really good.
We had Barrett Johnson ontalking about how we disciple
our kids like Jesus.
Really just got some goodinsights around again.
The framework he teaches isabiding, modeling, teaching,
applying relationships, connecting what I call that
relationship.
(01:25):
So anyway, that's what it's allabout and that abiding was so
important.
Then we talked about how do wego through the modeling and the
teaching.
Particularly, we don't feellike we're equipped to teach.
How do we overcome that?
What does that look like?
And then so far as applicationcomponent, and then the overall
arching component of connectingwith our kids.
So we had a lot of goodreflections and just insights
(01:45):
and practical advice and tipsand things that we both have
learned from our life, and oneof the things that really jumped
out was was he?
He brought up three questionsand I've taught this in the past
as well, cause I got it wastaught to me by Pastor Joby
Martin but three questions thatyou can take when you're
studying God's word.
That will just draw you in, andthen, if you're with your kids,
(02:07):
it will draw them in as well.
What happened?
Very first one All right, sowhat?
Then now what?
And you start putting thatbasic little framework into play
when you sit down to teachGod's word and to try to draw
them closer to him.
It's going to make things a loteasier for you.
It's just that conversation isgoing to be so organic.
So I'm really, really thankfulfor a chance that we had to meet
(02:30):
Barrett just a great guy, stilldefinitely praying for him.
He mentioned the cancer scarethat he has right now, so he is
battling that.
So I'm just praying that.
We just ask that for you guysto keep him and his entire
family lifted in prayer.
Okay, all right.
So now for the Lion Within us onour fun Fridays, you guys know
what's coming.
We've got our health, wealthand self, and that's the three
(02:51):
pillars of the lion, and we'regoing to do a tip for each one
of those.
Just some insights, just someideas.
You know nothingearth-shattering here, but
hopefully it's going to be agood reminder, if nothing else,
for nothing else.
The health tip is how do webuild stronger minds and bodies?
It's not just about how manycurls you get to do, but you got
to take care of the whole body.
The whole body as well as themind.
The wealth tip is being theultimate stewards of our
(03:15):
finances and our careers andthat stewardship mindset.
What does that look like?
And then, self-tip is not aboutbeing a better, just you, but
how do we show up to be thehusband and father that our
families desperately need?
Okay, all right, so let's getinto them.
So the health tip is verysimple, and Barrett even talked
about this to some degree we hadto start prioritizing rest as a
(03:38):
disciple, right, because ifwe're going to be disciples of
Christ, we need to recognizethat this is important and it's
not a luxury.
This is a command that God hasgiven us, right, and if we want
to live effective and do whathe's called us to do, we should
start prioritizing this andaligning ourselves to God's
rhythm and his renewal and hisrevival.
(03:58):
Right, and this may mean thatsometime throughout the week,
you, you got to find a way tounplug, to relax and focus on
something that restores you.
I know for me yesterday, so I'mrecording this on a Monday, okay
, for me, sundays are very busybecause we have the farm we got
to take care of before church, then we have church and there's
usually meetings after church.
(04:18):
There's all these thingshappening.
You can spend basically halfyour day.
You could just be non-stopgoing.
So I decided yesterdayafternoon just you know what.
I went, we got our horse one ofour horses and I just brushed
him down, threw a saddle on himand just took a little half hour
ride around the property justhanging out with him, just he
(04:42):
and I.
It was a little bit warmer, itwas just a nice day and that was
just my way of purposelypausing and connecting and that
idea of rest really, again, it'snot about sleep.
Now, for my wife it's aboutsleep, but for me it's not about
(05:02):
sleep.
This is about stopping, stoppingand just resting and just being
with God and that quiet timeyou're going to find that's
going to bring you so much peace, so much peace.
And let's just face it, thisworld we live in is crazy fast,
it's always moving and, as aresult, it's very easy to say
(05:25):
you know what, I don't have timefor that, I got stuff to do.
But if we lean into obedienceto what God's calling us to and
take the time to prioritize rest, as a disciple of Christ,
you're allowing yourself to berenewed, to be recharged so that
you can lead with the energyand clarity in all these
different areas of life.
(05:46):
So look, I don't get this righta lot.
I'm not sitting here trying totell you this is a command.
You have to do it this way.
I'm just encouraging you.
If you find like you're thereso much week, you never have
enough time.
You're constantly chasing theclock.
You got meeting after meeting, after meeting, after meeting.
You never, like you, everactually move the ball down the
field because you're justconstantly just in chaos mode.
Maybe you need to try to findsome time at some point, draw a
(06:08):
line in the sand and say this ismy rest time and doggone it.
I'm not going to vary from it.
All right Now, wealth tipfellas.
Seek some wise counsel for someof these decisions that you're
making, particularly with yourfinances moving forward, because
the Bible gives us a lot ofemphasis on the values of wise
counsel.
It just does, and particularlywhen it comes to finances.
(06:31):
And it tells us in Proverbsthat look, plans fail for lack
of counsel, but with manyadvisors they succeed.
That's pretty simple.
That should be right there forus to walk it out.
But if we're going to practicethis, we better be surrounding
ourselves with trusted, godlyadvisors who can give us some of
the insights into, maybe, howwe budget or how we should
(06:51):
invest or what does, overall, just stewardship look like?
Maybe it's financial plannerswho actually have the same
worldview, the Christianworldview that you have, and
they recognize that as importantand they respect your values.
I don't know.
Maybe you have mentors fromyour business standpoint that
they had the business experiencebut at the same time, they're
pursuing God with all they are.
(07:12):
Whatever that may be, you needto commit those people in your
life to go help God direct.
You understand these basicprinciples of giving and saving
and spending and investing andall the different ones that are
out there, and when you seekcounsel, think about this for a
second fellas.
When you're asking others forhelp, you're actually
demonstrating humility in actionand a willingness to submit our
(07:33):
plans to his, and that's wherewe start building wisdom upon
wisdom upon wisdom, and I wouldsay this is going to lead to
really good, sound financialdecisions that are going to
honor and glorify God and alsoit's going to serve your family
well.
So if we're trying to do thesefinancial decisions alone, stop.
(07:55):
We have to be super careful whowe're taking that advice from,
because we want to make surethat we're listening to the Holy
Spirit and if we're invitingthe Holy Spirit into the
conversations around ourfinances.
Guess what?
He's going to say?
Something he's got to invitehim in.
All right, now, self-tip this isa big one this week, okay,
because Barrett talks so muchabout how we disciple our kids
(08:17):
and bring them to Christ and letthem see what it looks all
about.
So we need to, for your tipthis week, start creating some
family traditions around ourfaith, okay, and these are
powerful tools that we can startreally start make that legacy
and pass some things down.
So maybe it's just startingsmall.
Like he said, just once a week,on a Thursday night, have some
(08:38):
Bible study, have a little bitof devotion, or maybe a prayer
night, or go start doing someservice projects together where
everyone can be part of.
You know and for us, you know,I've had to get really practical
on this of just putting a Biblein where we eat, the dining
room.
Right, we just have a smalltable.
(09:00):
We're all six of us around thetable.
I keep a Bible on that table sothat it's super easy for me in
the moment.
Whoever finishes eating first, you're our reader.
Hey, we're just going to read alittle bit of scripture and
then really it starts applyingwhat Barrett and I talked about
earlier.
So what now what?
What happened?
So what now what?
(09:20):
There are three questions thatyou can ask and if you ask those
three questions, it justgenerates a really good
conversation around spiritualgrowth and discipline and
application all these differenttypes of things, just by asking
so what happened?
So what now what?
But again, this was this iscreating a tradition.
(09:40):
Another tradition as ofrecording this.
I know this is coming out in2025, but we're recording this
early, or actually late, in 2024.
We're actually in December.
So one thing we do every yearin December is we just go
through Luke.
There's 24 chapters in Luke.
If you read a chapter a day inLuke, guess what?
That takes you right up toChristmas and you read the whole
Gospel of Luke.
So that's just another littlesmall thing.
(10:01):
But as you start doing this, this is like our second or third
year doing this Luke thingWe've created a tradition now.
And thing We've created atradition now and this gives
hopefully we're going to buildthis into our children over and
over and over something they'lltake into their life as well,
because we're just reallymodeling Christ's love and we're
teaching it to them and if wetake this as a priority, this is
(10:23):
how we do it.
You can do it of your way, butover time, these little moments,
these are going to be thecherished memories they look
back on Think about that for asecond and it's also going to be
the foundation that's in theirlife to lead their families by
the little decisions we makeabout creating these family
traditions around faith.
Maybe you don't have many, maybe you don't have anything to
(10:43):
go from.
That's great.
That means you have a blanksheet of paper.
You have the ability right now, now, today, to do something
powerful.
So I encourage you to startthat family tradition and just
stop putting it off.
I'm telling you guys, you'renever going to be as blessed as
you are when you lean in andjust are obedient to the Holy
Spirit.
All right, so now there areyour three tips the health,
(11:04):
wealth and self.
That health, again, wasprioritizing rest as a disciple.
That wealth tip was seekingthat wise counsel, particularly
in our financial decisions.
And that self tip is reallycreating those family traditions
around our faith as believersin Christ.
Okay, book of the week, fellas,it's right.
Here with Barrett, and I talkedabout this one Disciple of them
, like Jesus, leading your kidsthe way that Christ led them,
(11:26):
led the 12.
He mentioned.
It's like 30,000 words.
It's the way that Christ ledthe 12.
He mentioned.
It's like 30,000 words.
It's an easy read, fellas.
It's only what 180 pages or so.
Lots of good insights, lots ofgood reflections.
Again, really goodvisualization around that model
framework that he has so far ashow to disciple them.
So I highly encourage you guysto go check it out.
The Book of the Week for theLion Within Us each and every
week is there as well.
(11:47):
It gives you a really goodplace if you're looking to build
your library.

every week so you can literallyjust scroll right through.
We have links directly toAmazon or wherever you can buy
the book at and just add itright to your library.

So for our fun Friday, you knowwe always wrap up with some dad
(12:10):
jokes.
We're not going to skip thatthis week either.
So a couple of dad jokes foryou and I made them more like
dad-related dad jokes, if youwill.
So these are for you young dadsout there who maybe got some
babies at home.
So the first one is what didthe diaper say to?
Because they always leak?
(12:35):
All right, so there you go.
Look, I like good old pottyjokes.
I'm sorry, my wife can't standthem.
I think they're funny.
So, number one what did thediaper say to the dad?
I feel like we're in deepdoo-doo.
Number two why should you nottell babies secrets?
They always leak.
So, fellas, let me know whichone you like, number one or
number two?
Again, support atthelinewithinus, joe directly.
If we use it on the show, we'llgive you a shout out as well as
(12:57):
hook you up with some freecontent and swag just for
helping us out.
All right, so now, question ofthe week.
This week, fellas, we talkedabout it all week.
It's what's one lesson aboutGod you wish someone had taught
you earlier?
That's a very simple question.
Now, if you know that, nowhere's a question what are you
going to do about it?
You need to go teach that.
You need to go bring that tosomeone else because that may be
(13:19):
a revelation or insight orencouragement that they need to
hear.
All right, so, guys, thank youso much for listening.
Again, come back on Monday.
We'll have another week prayerfor you.

(14:23):
I don't know about you, but Iused to find Mondays really
rough.
I would find myself trying toreset for work, trying to get my
bearing on the family calendar, trying to find time for my own
spiritual growth and development, and often I found myself
overwhelmed or just flatlyignoring aspects of my life that
I know are meaningful to me.
What I learned was that if Ihad immediate access to
(14:45):
important and impactfulspiritual topics and reflections
.
To start my week well.
After the allure of a Sundaysermon has passed, I would set
my whole week up to be moremeaningful and for the
opportunity to make a trueimpact.
