Chris Grainger (00:03):
Welcome to the
Lion Within Us, a podcast
serving Christian men who arehungry to be the leaders God
intends you to be.
I'm your host, chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, fellas, it's funFriday time.
I'm excited to be here with you.
Let's get going, okay?
So Scripture of the Week.
We've talked about it in thefirst two episodes this week,
but 1 Corinthians 15, verse 14says and if Christ has not been
raised, our preaching is useless, and so is your faith.
(00:27):
Apostle Paul, just man, he hasa way of just cutting right to
it, doesn't he?
But look, go back and listen tothe spiritual kickoff episode.
I spent a lot of time that's aspecial SKO, by the way.
I spent a lot of timereflecting on 1 Corinthians 15.
That's how I typically do itevery day within our line,
within this community.
I'd love to know what you thinkabout it, and I'd also love for
you to check out the previousepisode where I've kind of tried
(00:49):
to break down and debunk thedifferences between Easter and
Christmas and why Christmasabsolutely destroys Easter,
destroys it, and I'm tired of it.
I'm tired of Easter justgetting slapped.
I'm like, bro, this is a bigdeal.
So I'd love to know yourthoughts on it too.
Like, did you find that that'strue for you?
(01:11):
Like, is Easter just kind ofdownplayed?
I mean, think about the stuffthat you buy for your family.
I guarantee you, if youcelebrate Christmas at all, you
have Christmas decorations, youprobably have Christmas
ornaments, you probably haveChristmas attire like shirts and
hats and jackets and whateverit may be right.
(01:31):
Think about all your Christmasdecorations, just for insight.
And then think about outsidedecorations and lights and all
the stuff, the stuff.
Most people have an area oftheir house somewhere for
Christmas storage just to storethe stuff to celebrate the
holiday.
Right, what do you have forEaster?
(01:54):
Maybe a couple of Easterbaskets Very rare, very rare.
Does anyone have anything ofsignificance for Easter?
Right, I mean, you'll have somecandy around that time of year,
maybe you'll have a ham andmaybe there's certain things
(02:15):
you'll do.
But notice the stark differenceand that's where we spent some
time unpacking in the lastepisode.
So look again.
All about Resurrection Sunday.
Love, love, love.
This time of year.
This is Good Friday today.
Just love the fact that you'relistening, that you're wanting
to lean in, that you want togrow.
But, guys, we have to recognizethe importance of this holiday
(02:41):
for more than just a chance toconsume empty calories.
It can't be that it has to beso much more.
All right, all right guys.
All right guys.
So let's keep going, all right.
So for our new listeners outthere for a fun Friday episode,
we usually break it down inthree ways.
We do a health, wealth and aself tip.
So those are the three pillarsof the line within us.
(03:03):
So health being mind and body.
So we try wealth and a self-tip.
So those are the three pillarsof the line within us.
So health being mind and body.
So we try to give you a tip tostrengthen your mind and body.
Wealth is really aroundstewardship, around our finances
and our careers.
So how do we do that in a wayto honor and glorify God?
And self-tip is not about youyourself directly, but about the
influence you have as a husbandand as a father.
(03:24):
And what can we do to, you know, to mold that, to sharpen that?
All right, so we've got somethree tips for each and every
week, so let's get to thosethree for this week.
So for the health tip, my buddyLonnie mentioned this to me the
other day.
He's like man sitting is thenew smoking.
It's like bro, that's baller,he's like.
It's true, you know, and assomeone who you know, I do a ton
(03:46):
of writing, content creation, videos, all the stuff right that
we do at the Lion Within Us,outside of our live events.
It's all sitting in this chair, you know.
So this is really alive to meand I recognize it to be true.
Therefore, I have to combat it,and that means for me putting in
some time throughout the dayfor movement, to get moving, for
(04:09):
sure, but just to get off mybutt, like stand up, Like there
could be all sorts of differenttips here.
Like, for me that means everyday a week.
I'd go running at our trailevery day, six days a week.
The only day I don't go isSaturday.
I actually skip Saturday.
I go Sunday morning beforechurch.
I just think it's a great wayto get woke up and get ready to
go.
(04:29):
But get moving.
Sitting is the new smoking.
Just think about how lethargicyou can be of, just, you know,
sitting at your desk and you'reprobably working, like me,
really hard.
Your brain's going, you'reburning calories, but you're not
actively moving your body.
It's going to impact you Getgoing, right, get up.
If anything, like, set sometimers to stand up, just get
(04:54):
that blood circulating, whateveryou have to do.
But sitting is the new smoking.
You guys know how terriblesmoking is for you.
Gotta take care of that heart.
That means you gotta get active.
Alright, wealth tip fellas.
This time of year, if you go tochurch particularly on a Baptist
church, but other churchdenominations as well you may
(05:14):
hear something called the AnnieArmstrong Easter Offering, and I
just want to let you guys knowwhat that's about.
So it's really a SouthernBaptist thing, but there's maybe
other denominations that lookinto it.
But it's funding missions Okay,it's funding missions and for
(05:35):
this time of year ResurrectionSunday and they talk about an
Annie Armstrong Easter offering.
What you're funding is about3,000 missionary families
serving across the US and Canada.
So it's a great mission.
So don't have any reserves orquestions on this one.
This is one that you can.
You know they've been vetted.
(05:55):
The money is definitely spentin good, good areas.
So if you have an opportunity orif you're looking for somewhere
to give this for this time ofyear, particularly for uh, for
Easter you just want to just bea good steward.
Consider that.
Go, try to find a church thatmaybe is taking an Annie
Armstrong Easter offering andusually the way those offerings
are taken up that goes directlyto Annie Armstrong Like the
(06:18):
church is basically just abypass, like just for that, so
they're just taking it in andsending it right back out.
But it's just a great way toencourage those who are
committed their lives to themission field to support them.
So if you ever hear that I justwanted to bring that term up
you know, sometimes you're inchurches like what is this thing
?
Like that's what this is allabout.
Okay, all right, now for ourself-tip.
(06:40):
I said it on Wednesday, I wantto say it again Encourage your
kids to invite their friends tothis coming weekend services.
Okay, it's a great venue forexplaining and sharing the
gospel, and studies show youknow they're more statistically
inclined to come to church wheninvited by someone else.
(07:01):
Ok, so you're trying to winsomeone to church and all you do
is pray about it and you're notactually inviting them to come
with you.
You're probably missing thegreatest opportunity that you
could have, which is actuallytake that, put it in action.
Invite them to come along withyou, along with you, okay.
So, again, it's just a good tipfor us in general to think
about.
Hey, if your kids show anyinterest and want to be a little
(07:24):
evangelist, encourage them.
Heck, yeah, I think that's agreat idea.
You should.
You know what you know.
Let's call them right now orsend them a text message,
whatever it may be.
Maybe you as the parent have tostep in and, you know, ask the
other parent for sure you got tohave.
You know checks and balancesthere.
But also I would encourage usas parents to do this.
Make it easy for the otherparents to say yes to that.
(07:47):
How do you do that?
You make it easy for them tosay yes by offering to take care
of the logistics.
Like, hey, I know my son or mydaughter, they want them to come
.
They're inviting your child tocome with us and we'd love to
have them.
As a matter of fact, we couldeven pick them up early that
morning.
Or, if they'd be interested, they could come and spend the
(08:08):
night the night before and don'tworry about, we'll bring them
home afterwards.
Is there anything we can bring?
You take all the no's off thetable.
You know the no's of.
You know we don't have time todrive, or you know yada, yada.
People can find excuses.
Try to find ways to eliminatethose no's and then when you
(08:33):
have those, your kids friendswith you.
You be intentional as well aboutsharing the gospel, like you
want to expose the gospel tothem in several different
scenarios, in several differentways, because sometimes,
depending on the preacher, maybethe preacher just has a
different way of sharing thegospel and it doesn't resonate.
You know there's lots ofpreachers who just have struggle
with communication.
Maybe you just need to find asimple way here's what God's
(08:57):
done for me and just have thatconversation in the car or have
that conversation for lunchafter church, whatever it may be
Right, but just take what youcan from your abilities to
reduce those potentials forsaying no and equip your son or
your daughter to bring theirfriends, because you never know
(09:17):
how that, just that one littlestep, a little bit of
inconvenience on your end, canhave a massively huge impact on
them All.
Right, so that's our three tips.
Guys, we've got our health, wealth and ourselves sitting as
a noose smoking, so get yourbutt up and get moving.
Wealth tip that Annie ArmstrongEaster offering definitely
encourage you to check that out.
And a self-tip is encourageyour kids and invite their
friends to church and then helpthem to take those no's off the
(09:39):
table, all right.
So our book of the week thisweek, guys, we do this each and
every week.
Since we don't have an authorthis week this actually, you
know we interviewed I want tobring this one up.
It's by John Owen, theMortification of Sin.
It's a great little book.
It's not many pages.
What 100-something pages?
Yeah, it's about 120 pages.
He was a Puritan back in the1700s.
Just a great little study.
(10:01):
I'm still working my waythrough it right now.
But just around, why is itimportant that we kill, mortify,
sin, right, we have to.
Mortification has to be, wehave to get it out of our life
right, and we do that bysurrendering to the Lordship of
Christ.
So really recognize we need tosee sin for what it is and
(10:21):
recognize, you know what that'snot something we should play
with.
That takes a whole level ofhumility to recognize that.
We also need to recognize whatsin isn't and what mortification
is, what mortification isn't,and then, ultimately, the work
of Christ and the power of theSpirit.
Fellas on what that means forus.
So check that.
(10:42):
It's just a good littleresources.
Obviously, you probably heardof some John Owen stuff in the
past, but check that one out.
We'll have some links out thereas well If you're looking to
add to your library.
For you know, go check out theline with themus slash book.
It's a great way to getconnected there.
All right, All right, guys, let's so.
Our dad joke number one is Inormally don't tell dad jokes,
(11:03):
but when I do he laughs.
So that's a first one thing.
That's pretty good.
No-transcript, oh no, becausethe pee is silent.
That's pretty good.
So let me know Number one.
Number two I normally don'ttell dad jokes, but when I do he
laughs.
Number two why can't you hear apterodactyl go to the bathroom?
(11:24):
Because the pee is silent.
Both of those are from ourlongtime buddy community member
friend, doug.
Doug jokes that his spiritualgift is dad jokes and I tend to
agree.
Anytime we're in a meeting withDoug, whether it's the Bible
study or couples night, it'salways he's got the zingers,
(11:46):
he's got the zingers I'm always.
If I'm looking for a good pickme up, just hang out with Doug.
He's going to put a smile onyour face and look, look, doug,
he's again a member of ourcommunity.
He takes part of the differentthings that we do and it's just
a great way again.
Fellowship, communitydiscipleship, all the things
we're offering gets alignedwithin us and he's leaned in.
(12:07):
So thank you, Doug, for thosewonderful, wonderful dad jokes.
Brother, you keep them comingand we're going to keep the guys
chuckling out there, all right,so our question of the week,
this week, guys, has been kindof focused on the empty tune,
obviously.
So it's, what does the emptytune mean to you personally?
Again, it has to be your faith,it can't be someone else's.
So if it means something to you, what are you going to do about
it?
All right, so that's been ahopefully a fellow that you've A
(12:30):
little bit different format forsure, definitely would love to
hear from you Just to see whatyou think about it.
You know I don't know if youlike it or not Really super
curious on what you thoughtabout the spiritual kickoff

it.
I don't know about you, but Iused to find mondays really
rough.
(13:55):
I would find myself trying toreset for work, trying to get my
bearing on the family calendar, trying to find time for my own
spiritual growth and development, and often I found myself
overwhelmed or just flatlyignoring aspects of my life that
I know are meaningful to me.
What I learned was that if I hadimmediate access to important
(14:16):
and impactful spiritual topicsand reflections to start my week
well after the allure of aSunday sermon has passed, I
would set my whole week up to bemore meaningful and for the
opportunity to make a trueimpact.
