Chris Grainger (00:03):
Welcome to the
Lion Within Us, a podcast
serving Christian men who arehungry to be the leaders God
intends you to be.
I'm your host, chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, fellas, spiritualkickoff time.
Let's go.
My favorite book in the Bible byfar James, chapter 1, verse 5.
If any of you lacks wisdom, youshould ask God, who gives
(00:23):
generously to all, withoutfinding fault, and it will be
given to you.
So, guys, yeah, my favoritebook in the Bible love spending
time with James.
You don't know where it's at.
It can be a little tricky tofind a time.
It's in your New Testament, just after Hebrews and before
first Peter.
Okay, so it's, it's a.
(00:44):
It's a short little book, so itcan be a little bit tricky, but
that's that's where you canfind it in the new Testament.
Okay, and this whole week we'regoing to be talking about what I
call like the triple crown, like the triple crown of
spiritual growth, and we'regoing to unpack three areas, but
ultimately, everything leads upto wisdom.
(01:04):
Okay, and I think it'simportant as we start unpacking
this in this spiritual kickoffepisode, because again, we're
trying to simplify and applyGod's word to our life, and
again, we do this Monday throughFriday within the Lion, within
Us community.
So head on over to thelionwithinus and get started
with that.
But wisdom, if we startthinking about, you got
understanding, you got knowledge, you got wisdom.
(01:26):
And wisdom is more than justknowledge.
Wisdom is the ability to seethings from another perspective,
primarily for the believer, from God's perspective.
It's not just about making gooddecisions, it's about aligning
our hearts with His truth, withHis purpose, with His timing.
That With his timing, that's ahard one.
But wisdom is not natural.
(01:48):
It doesn't just come naturally.
It has to be sought after, ithas to be cultivated, it has to
be, you know, uh, applied to ourlife.
And for me I kind of go back, you know.
You know, guys, I love tellingstories.
But like racing, you know, Iworked in race cars for a long
time and in the world of racingit's not just about speed.
There's a lot of preparationthat comes into it, there's a
(02:10):
lot of execution, there's a lotof applying wisdom in the right
moments.
So for building a fast race car, there's hours spent
fine-tuning that equipment, youknow, and studying the track and
the different pieces of dataand running practice laps.
And it's in those pre-racemoments, you know, that's when
(02:30):
you win the race.
You know when the race actuallystarts.
All the work's been done, because without the right
adjustments, without the rightof pre-work that's been done, no
amount of raw speed is going toguarantee success.
Right, and we start thinkingabout our spiritual walk.
You know, we can gain knowledgeof scripture, we can understand
(02:51):
its principles.
Like you can memorize stuffright, all day long.
You can even not memorize it tothe point where you can teach
it.
But without wisdom, you won'tbe able to apply it at the right
time when you need it most, theright way.
And that's the.
That's the list, the missinglink, and what james is talking
about here.
He's like look, wisdom is notsomething produced, it's a gift.
(03:12):
But we're not asking for it.
And why don't we ask for it,fellas?
Let's just think about that fora second pride.
Pride gets in the way becausepride tells us that you know, I
got this, bro, I don't need this.
And our own instincts aren'tenough, our own plans aren't
enough, we want to be in control.
But wisdom really requiressomething.
(03:33):
That's countercultural thesedays Humility Now, everybody
says that they're humble, butare you really?
Are you really?
Because it's not wisdom.
At the end of the day, it's notabout having all the answers,
it's about surrendering to theone who does, and that takes a
high level of humility.
Again, I always talk abouthumility.
(03:54):
It's not thinking less ofyourself, just thinking of
yourself less.
That's an easy way to rememberit.
But man, the world that we're insays no, you have to YOLO, bro.
You better look out foryourself, because if you don't
look out for yourself, no oneelse is going to look out for
you.
We don't believe that.
Christians.
We have to recognize thatthat's a false lie.
God sees everything and we canonly see the next turn.
(04:17):
Go back to the racetrack.
I can only see one turn at atime.
God sees the whole track.
See what I'm saying.
So there's a path it's laid outin Scripture for us as well to
understand.
There's a path of true wisdomand it starts with studying
God's Word.
You've got to know the truth.
You just do Just like I had tostudy the track, had to study
(04:41):
the data from the race car.
You got to study God's word andyou have to really study it to
for a deeper level ofunderstanding, not just surface
level stuff like truly want tojust have the craving and desire
to know his word more Right, and if you study it, then you
got to share it.
And I found no better way toshare it than to teach it Right,
because look like you'll neverbe as prepared for something in
(05:05):
the Bible as you are if you haveto teach it.
I'm just telling you, someonewho's taught Sunday school
classes for years now, thatthere is a good push, a good
inherent push.
A good inherent push when youare the person responsible for
delivering God's word and forsharing it and for encouraging
others with it and equippingthem with it.
(05:25):
Man, it grows you like no other.
And then if you do all thesethings, then you get to apply it
.
Okay, just like we.
Okay, I knew what I needed toadjust on a race car.
It's one thing to know it.
Then I had to actually go tothe car and put my hands on it
and adjust it.
Maybe it was a shock or aspring, or you know gear ratio,
or maybe you know a track bar ora sway bar.
There's different things.
(05:46):
There's all sorts of adjustmentpoints on a race car, but I
need to know what they are.
Then I had to actually do them.
So it's only valuable when, andin real time, you know if the
car is tight, he comes into it.
I need to go up on the springon the right rear to help it
turn.
You know what it doesn't do anygood if I just know what I need
(06:07):
to do.
I have to actually put thespring on right, and that's
where wisdom comes in.
It's not a one-time achievement, it's ongoing and it's a
lifelong pursuit.
Fellas, let's just face thefacts.
It requires us to ask and askus.
It requires us to listen andthen it requires us to act in
(06:28):
faith.
But God gives us wisdom tothose who seek it.
There's no judgment orprerequisites or anything like
that.
It's an invitation.
So I don't know what you'reworking on right now or what
you're preparing for, or whatyou're practicing or how you
plan on applying what you learn, but I do know this God's wisdom
is always available.
It's always available.
(06:50):
We just got to ask him.
We have to have to be superintentional about taking the
step to ask him.
And James, james, he hits usbetween the eyes.
Look, if you're lacking somewisdom, more than what you're
supposed to do, you should askGod.
You should ask God and it willbe given to you.
But man, getting to that pointof asking.
(07:10):
It is so hard sometimes becausewe don't want to feel like we
need anything.
I just want to encourage you, bro, if you're going through a
tough season right now difficultseason.
Things aren't happening the waythat you wish they would happen
at work.
Maybe things aren't happeningthe way you wish they would at
home.
You and your wife are always atdifferent ends of the spectrum
on things.
You and your kids are nevergetting along.
(07:31):
Take it to God, ask okay, whatare you trying to teach me here?
Show me what you want me to doand I will take the practical
step moving forward.
Which leads me to the questionwhat practical steps can you
take to seek His wisdom daily?
There are steps you can take.
We just went through a fewright here.
But what are some small thingsyou can do?
(07:51):
It could just be as simple asstart your day by thanking Him
for the day and then, whenyou're going throughout the day,
ask Him for that wisdom, notfor your own glory, but for him
to be glorified.
Okay, now, if you've listened tothe lion long enough, you know
on our spiritual kickoffepisodes, we want to take a
(08:12):
moment just to make sure thatyou know if you don't have Jesus
as your Lord and Savior.
What an opportunity you have infront of you Because for some
reason you've listened to theLion Within Us.
You've got to this part of thisepisode and God is trying to
show you and tell you something.
And I just want to encourageyou.
(08:34):
I want you to know somethingGod loves you.
He had a perfect design in mindand when he made you he's like
yep, that's exactly how I wantto make that one.
He loves us so much.
His perfect design was great atthe beginning and he made Adam
the first man and he formed himwith his hands, it says.
(08:55):
I think that's just super coolto kind of give you a
visualization, just an imagerythere of God and breathing the
breath of life into Adam, andAdam sets up, he's face to face
with his creator, and how coolthat must have been, how
incredibly awesome that musthave been.
And then things unfortunatelytook a turn for the bad when sin
(09:17):
entered the world and that sinseparates us from God.
And now we live in thisconstant state of separation and
the more and more guys I talkto about this kind of stuff, the
clearer it becomes that guysthink that what we have to do to
get into heaven is just be agood person, do enough good.
(09:38):
And my pushback to that isalways well, what's enough?
Like what?
Have you reached that point ofenough good?
You know where is that at?
Because it seems like that's asliding scale, that's a variable
, you know, and that's wherepeople usually start scratching
(09:59):
their head.
Well, I hadn't thought of itthat way.
I'm like, exactly, you know,because enough good, I don't
want to do too much, or I don'twant to.
What if you miss it by one deedand you get to the gates of
heaven?
You're like man, sorry, soclose.
You know, that is so subjective, right?
(10:23):
So we need, ultimately, if wehave a gap that we can't
overcome on our own, we needsomebody to fill the gap for us,
since we can't do it ourselves.
And that's where Jesus comes inright.
And so we need a functionalSavior to do for us what we
can't do for ourselves.
We don't need a coach to helpus improve our own abilities.
That's not it.
(10:44):
So, if we need a Savior, who isit?
Well, jesus, because he leftHeaven on a rescue mission for
us, was born of a virgin, fulfilled all the prophecies,
performed all the miracles, allthe different types of teachings
, showed us the way, taught us,gave us all the instructions,
fulfilled everything there, andthen he went to the cross and he
(11:06):
died for our sins.
So he took on the penalty forour sins.
And then the crazy partabsolutely is that he overcame
death and he rose.
He's resurrected and that's whowe serve a living Savior, not
some dead guy, right.
So Jesus paid the penalty.
So that means that, okay, wehave a Savior available to us
(11:28):
that's offering a free gift ofsalvation.
What do you have to do?
Well, you've got to ask for it.
You've got to ask Him into yourheart.
You've got to turn from yourways and turn to Him and believe
that he is your Lord and Savior, he is the Messiah, and put all
your trust in Him.
And it sounds so simple.
(11:51):
But this is where so many peoplestumble, because they think
Jesus was just a nice guy, agood teacher and for sure.
Maybe he was a prophet.
But man, I don't know aboutthis God stuff.
And I'm just telling you.
I'm just telling you theevidence is overwhelming.
Jesus is the Messiah and youhave an invitation.
And you have an invitation, aslong as you're alive, to accept
(12:14):
him as your Savior.
But the moment that your timeis up, that invitation's over,
because at that point it's go orno go.
And look, there's lots of peoplewho take different positions on
this, but I'm just telling you,I will put my trust and my hope
in the guy who overcame death, the guy who rose, the guy who
(12:38):
performed all the miracles.
That's my Savior, that's myLord, and I pray that is what
the decision that you make rightnow the greatest part is too.
You don't have to make thisdecision sitting in a church,
like no.
You can make the decision tofollow Christ as your Lord and
Savior right now, today.
So if you're ready to confessHim as your Savior, let's just
pray together.
Let's just pray together rightnow.
(13:00):
So, father, just thank you somuch.
We love you For that onelistener who's ready to confess
you as Lord and Savior.
Lord, I pray you hear theirprayer.
I pray that they feel thatpeace that passes all
understanding, flood over themright now.
As they know, they've beenputting this off for too long.
So I just pray, god, you bewith them, you encourage them,
and I'm so thankful for thismost important Bible decision
that they made today.
In Jesus' name, amen, alright.
(13:22):
