you can simplify and apply thatto your life.

So for this episode, I'm excitedwe have Mitch Matthews joining
us.
He is the creator of the Dream, think, do podcast and he's a
(01:06):
very successful coach, speakerand pretty much a serial
entrepreneur as well.
He helps guys really thinkthrough what God has called them
to do, and Mitch shares with ustoday.
He's going to share anincredible story of six miracles
in his life and how those sixmiracles for him it was him and
his wife.
The story was just going tohave you on the edge of your
(01:27):
seat, but how they remain Justfaithful Along every step of the
way.
And how God would put Justremove the barriers, first and
foremost, but how, in thedarkest of times when we turn
matters and you can turn severalplaces, guys you can turn to a
(01:49):
bottle, you can turn to somesome pills, you can turn to
another woman, you can turn toyour work, whatever what there's
there's lots of ways to numbyour, to numb ourselves.
Mitch turned to his faith andthat was incredible.
So I was encouraged by the story.
We talk a lot about businessand how to do what God's calling
(02:09):
you to do and how you take thatnext step.
If he's called you to dosomething, what does that leap
look like?
So I was highly encouraged andhopefully you will be too with
this conversation with my friend, mitch Matthews.
Well, mitch, welcome to theLion Within Us.
How are you?
Mitch Matthews (02:28):
doing today.
Man, Chris, this is an honorbuddy.
I love being here, I love whatyou're doing and I'm excited for
our conversation.
Chris Grainger (02:34):
Oh, for sure,
For sure.
And I always love just to start, man, tell us something fun
about you that maybe not manypeople know about.
Mitch Matthews (02:41):
Absolutely so.
Well, one thing is uh, justyesterday we put put our oldest
son on a bus and he is beingdeployed to the middle East.
Uh, he's in the national guardand uh, so I mean it's fun, um,
because we are wildly proud ofhim and this is a dream that
he's had for a number of years.
He, he grew up patriotic, probably one of the most
(03:01):
patriotic people that I know.
I'd love to take credit forthat, but it's just a part of
God how God wired him.
So this is something that he'swanted to do, and so it's a
dream that he's walking out.
But, as you know, with kids, youwant to support them in their
dreams and you trust God as theywalk out those dreams.
And then, as my wife and I saidlast last night, is we were
(03:24):
crying a little bit too of, hey,you know, supporting kids in
their dreams is complicated, right, cause there's a part of
you that wants to just keep themsafe and home and with boring
lives and all that stuff.
But uh, he is, he is living hisdream and we're we couldn't be
more excited.
So it's, it's a uh, I don'tknow how people with that don't
walk in faith.
Uh, do it personally, cause Iyou know that that's really one
(03:49):
of the big things that's madethis possible for me.
To have sanity is to say, lord,I know you got them and help
them to be the best version ofhim that that you created him to
be, and and God's beenanswering that prayer his whole
life.
So we're just excited for thisjourney.
Chris Grainger (04:03):
That's so
awesome, man so we'll be praying
for his safety, for sure.
And do you have other kids?
Is he the only one?
Mitch Matthews (04:10):
We do.
Ben is our older son and Alexis our younger son, and Alex is
a working actor in LA.
So yet another son that'swalking out a big dream and
things are coming together forthat.
But, as you can imagine, that'salso a big, big opportunity to
pray, oh yeah, for sure.
So, yeah, it's, it's a wildtime to be in Hollywood, but uh,
(04:32):
he's making it work and it'sexciting and God's got him and
so, yeah, it's a, it's abeautiful thing.
That's awesome, mitch.
Chris Grainger (04:39):
That's awesome.
I'm super excited to have youhere.
I definitely I'm super excitedto have you here.
I'm definitely your.
Your story, your testimonymaybe get some of the guys up to
speed of how you your faithjourney and your discipleship
journey.
Just love to let them know, like how you came to into
walking and being a disciple.
Mitch Matthews (04:53):
Yeah, I love it.
Uh, yeah, cause my faith.
It's, it's truly uh, well, it'swho I am and and, uh, you know,
don't walk this thing outperfectly, but God is so good
and it's such an honor to get towalk with them and and he just
is has proven trustworthy.
Uh, I grew up in a, a nicechurch in a small town, um, all
(05:14):
of that Um.
But I wound up really beingintroduced to the power of
prayer and, uh, getting to kindof uh, find out who the Holy
Spirit is, all of that by goingto an event for another church
in town and the youth pastornoticed me.
I was actually there because mybrother was in the band of a
(05:35):
Christian rock band and I wasjust in my early teens.
And the youth pastor, who wasan older guy, walked with a cane
, said, hey, who are you?
And I told him and told himthat you know, explained why I
was there, and he said, hey, come to my office at four
o'clock on Wednesday.
I'm like, why I don't come?
I don't come to this church, Idon't need to, I don't need to
(05:56):
do that.
And he's like just just come tomy office four o'clock on
Wednesday.
So I rode my bike up to theirchurch and walked into his
office and he was old school man, you'll love this.
He had a picture of him withRoy Rogers and Dale Evans on his
wall and I'm like I'm in.
I don't know who this guy is,but if he's hanging with the Roy
Rogers crying out loud and hisname was Stan Weerson.
(06:19):
And Stan Weerson wound upmentoring me every Wednesday for
a year plus and just talked tome about who God is and what it
is to pray and got me going to asummer camp where I really
learned even more about prayerand just it changed my life and
I will admit that in college Iwound up going and living in
(06:42):
England a couple of times andmet my wife, which was divine
and God's greatest gift in mylife other than my salvation.
It's just incredible.
But we kind of walked away fromthe church, not out of rebellion
.
We just moved to Montana andevery weekend we wound up saying
, hey, let's go to the mountainsand we said, you know, this is
our church, it's just gettingcloser physically and you know,
(07:05):
uh, to God and and going tohigher elevations, uh, you know
literally all of those things.
So we just had about a decadewhere we didn't go to church.
And um, then my wife and I hada cancer scare.
My wife, uh, was diagnosed withcancer and we found out on a
Christmas Eve, a snowy ChristmasEve, and we were in Billings,
montana at the time and fastforward three weeks.
(07:28):
God pulled off six miracles inone day, literally, like you,
like there are people that thatdon't even come from a faith
background, that can't evenexplain how God did what he did
in six miracles in one day, andthat just really woke both of us
up to that God is with us, thatGod is moving, that God is at
(07:53):
work and wants to be in everypart of our lives and know that
we love him and that he loves usand all of those things.
So that really changed our livesand I stayed in business.
I thought about going intoministry, but God really called
me to be in ministry in themarketplace.
He talked to me about being amissionary in the biggest
mission field on the planet, which is the marketplace, and so
(08:16):
I went that direction and mywife now runs a huge prayer
ministry and an alpha ministryat our church and that's her
full-time gig and all thosetypes of things.
So God is amazing.
God is good, god is miraculousand funny, and um has done some
incredible stuff in us, throughus and for us, so I'm grateful.
Chris Grainger (08:39):
Six miracles, I
mean, you don't have to go.
Mitch Matthews (08:42):
Oh no, we can
definitely talk about that.
I mean, it's wild.
I love seeing God heal peopleand we've gone on trips around
the world.
Now I really believe in thepower of prayer and healing
prayer and had 10 days downthere praying for people and saw
(09:02):
miraculous healings, which itwas just incredible.
But it really did start for uswith.
Mel got diagnosed with cancer.
Her doctor called and she wasworking.
She was managing a Pier 1.
I don't even think those storesexist anymore, but she was
managing a Pier 1 at the time.
So I got the phone call on aChristmas Eve and our doctor was
(09:24):
called, called us in tears, soI knew it was bad and, uh, she
let us know that the the testresults had come back and they
were, uh, exactly what wethought might be.
And and so, uh, I had thedubious um task of going then
and telling Mel, uh, cancer andthat it was very fast moving
(09:47):
cancer and so we had to movequickly.
So that afternoon on ChristmasEve I'm calling different cancer
centers trying to to get helpbecause she was going to need to
have a significant surgery and, through a course of of amazing
miracles it probably is aseparate miracle, it just didn't
(10:08):
happen.
On this one day we got into thebest OBGYN oncologist and his
name was Gary Johnson, in SaltLake.
He was the best of the best andit was through a miracle that
we were able to get anappointment with him.
And so the plan was on thisparticular day, we were going to
(10:30):
fly to Salt Lake city and havea pre-op visit and then have the
surgery the next day, and wewere probably going to be in
Salt Lake for a month after thatwith with what Mel was going to
have to go through.
But on that particular day whatwe call our six miracle day we
went to the airport.
We were in Billings, montanaand I fly a lot, I know you
(10:52):
probably travel a lot, I'venever had this happen but we got
to Billings Montana's airport,we get there, you know, you know
, an hour or so before theflight and the person at the
gate said hey, everybody's here,so we're just going to go ahead
and have you guys leave, we'rejust going to go ahead and leave
.
And so we wound up like I'venever had that happen.
Everybody's looking around likewhat's going on now.
(11:15):
So we actually landed in saltLake before we were even
supposed to take off fromBillings, which was miracle
number one, which was nuts,right.
And then I don't know whetherit's just great customer service
or a true miracle I'm puttingin the miracle category.
But we rented a car byenterprise and I always
mentioned their name because itwas a part of the deal Um, and
we literally walked off ourplane and we were in our
(11:37):
enterprise rental car in like 12minutes.
It was nuts Like how fast thisprocess, like our heads were
spinning, like what is evengoing on.
And so Mel and I wound uphaving a lot more time than we
thought.
And so I know now was a HolySpirit nudge.
I thought maybe it was just mebeing organized or me being
(11:58):
nervous or whatever.
But this was back in the dayswhere you actually traveled with
a lot of your medical records, you know.
So we had this big pile andfile of stuff and I said, hey,
what if we go to the doctor'soffice, the surgeon's office,
and drop this stuff off, cause Iknew he was in a labyrinth like
a major, huge, uh, medicalcommunity and large buildings.
(12:21):
So I said let's just go andlet's just see if if, uh, you
know, we can connect and anddrop this stuff off.
At least we'll know where theoffice is for when we go
tomorrow.
So we go to this office andit's uh, you know, he's a world
renowned on oncologist, gynecologist, and so we uh walk
into his office and of courseit's just busy and just chaos
(12:42):
and all this stuff.
And I, we walk up and I explainwho we are and why we're there
and we're just dropping thisstuff off and we just wanted to
check in.
We've got an appointmenttomorrow.
And she stopped.
She's like wait.
She said we just had somethinghappen.
Never happened.
Somebody canceled anappointment today.
You want to see the doctortoday, which we didn't know.
That was a miracle, but it wasa miracle and it was funny
(13:03):
because she actually said, well, and tomorrow, then you can just
be tourists.
Like that was not on our mind, tourism in Salt Lake city was
not on our mind that day, right,uh, but she's like well, we,
we'll just get you in today.
We're like okay, so that wewait just a few minutes.
Then they escort us back andand we're literally supposed to
have a 10 minute conversationwith him and then we're major
surgery.
Uh, you know, on this isWednesday and then we're going
(13:27):
to have major surgery on Friday.
So it was just supposed to be a10 minute consult on what to
expect getting to meet thedoctor for the first time, all
this stuff and Mel's exhausted.
My wife, uh, melissa, wasexhausted and there was only one
, one chair, which was a littleodd.
So there's one chair in theroom and there was the exam
table.
So I said, just sit down on thechair and I'll sit on the exam
(13:51):
table.
And we've never met this doctorbefore, but he's an oncologist,
gynecologist, right, like Imean.
So you know.
And he walks in the door and hesees he can't see Mel cause
she's hidden behind the door.
He sees me on the exam table.
He was like, wait, we don't doweenies here, you know, like I
just immediately love this guy, right, and we laugh, and it was
exactly what we needed.
And so Bell sat on the examtable, I sat on the chair, he
(14:14):
sat down in his little stool orwhatever and started talking
with us.
And again, this is the nextmiracle.
We didn't know what washappening, but it was is.
All he was supposed to do wasjust talk with us and then send
us on our way.
But he stopped and he said youknow what?
I want to do some tests, whichdid not make any sense at all
because we had every test doneknown to man.
(14:34):
And he's like, oh, I want to dosome tests.
And so started the test processand all these things, and in
and out of the room nurses werein and out of the room, in and
out of the room.
And finally he sticks his headback in.
He said get your clothes on andmeet me in my office.
And Mel and I look at eachother like this is either good
(14:55):
or really bad, you know.
And so they walk us down to hisoffice.
And he's a short guy I'll neverforget Like it was a little bit
like he had this massive desk inhis office.
Like it was a little bit likehe had this massive desk in his
office and it was a little bitlike seeing Kermit on the other
side of a big desk and all thisstuff.
And he walks in and he's like, hey, okay, this is going to
sound weird, but my wife hadinvasive cervical cancer which
(15:19):
was moving very fast, all thatstuff.
So we were there to have ahysterectomy and we didn't have
kids at the time.
We were in our late twenties,we had just started that process
, you know, talking throughthose kinds of things.
But he walks in, sits down bythis big desk and he's like hey,
it seems like you kids wouldlike to have kids.
And I think that's about thecruelest question on the planet,
(15:41):
you know, as far as consideringwhat we're facing and what's
what we think is the next step.
He said here's the thing is,we've had a miracle.
He's like cancer isn't gone,but it's regressed and, uh, it's
regressed enough that wouldallow us to do a procedure.
That wasn't an option before.
And he said, honestly, to beperfect, you know, like I'm good
(16:05):
, I'm a good surgeon, but mypartner in my practice pretty
much created this procedure.
He's the best of the best.
He's leaving for a 30 day tripto Russia tomorrow, but I caught
him as he was leaving theoffice.
He was just heading out.
I caught him and I told himyour story and I told him about
you kids and we think he coulddo that procedure.
(16:30):
And since he created thisprocedure, we have our own
surgical suite.
He's in there right nowprepping the suite and we would
like to just do that procedureright now.
And he's like if we get it all, then you guys can have kids.
If we don't, you guys come backdown in a month and have the
surgery that we were talkingabout.
(16:50):
So my brain, as you can imagine, chris, my brain was having a
hard time processing what wasgoing on, especially because
then my wife jumped over thatbig desk and gave Kermit a huge
hug, all this kind of stuff.
So we go down and, uh, theprocedure they actually allowed
me to be in the surgical suite.
(17:10):
I had to scrub up and put allthe stuff on and I, but I could
be there with my wife prayingand all that.
And uh, I'll never forget, um,what, what what's wild is is
that, you know, at the end ofthat, they're like well, we
think we got it, but the surgerywas much less invasive than
what we were expecting to bethere.
We were expecting to be therefor a month.
(17:32):
They're like you guys could gohome within a couple of days if
you want.
And we're like okay, that'samazing.
And we found out then, withindays, that they had gotten all
the cancer and within a month wewere pregnant with our older
son, ben, which is absolutelyamazing.
Now, you will love this storyand not everybody gets it, but
you'll appreciate this.
So a few months later.
(17:55):
You know, I we had, we had again.
I always appreciated God.
I'd been introduced to Godthrough, you know, stan Weerson,
my mentor as a kid, all thesethings, but we had really kind
of stepped away from all of that.
My mentor as a kid, all thesethings, but we had really kind
of stepped away from all of that.
But after this experience youcan't deny all those things just
(18:15):
lining up in one day.
That is crazy, right.
But God had an extra, extraspecial surprise for me in that
later on I'm getting back intothe Bible, reading the Bible,
and I do this deep dive on theLord's prayer because I really
wanted to understand prayer moreat that point.
And I'm looking at what Jesustells us and he says that our
Father, our Father, and I lookat that and it's like our Father
(18:40):
, our Abba, our Daddy.
Right, that's an intimate word.
I didn't understand.
It was such an intimate wordbut it's not this stoic, distant
father, it's like daddy.
Daddy, I can just come to you,I can trust you.
Daddy, right, we can raise ourarms and say, daddy, pick me up,
right.
That's when I realized, or Irecognized the fact that the
(19:04):
surgeon that God had gotten usto that world renowned surgeon.
His name was Gary Johnson, andthat's actually my wife's dad's
name.
Chris Grainger (19:16):
Really.
Mitch Matthews (19:17):
And in prayer I
was just like, wait a second,
what?
And God's like, I did not wantyou to miss the daddy did it.
So it's just, it's amazing.
So I can tell you like, justlike Israelites, I can say that
we had that amazing, miraculousexperience.
And there are days where Istill forget that God is big and
(19:39):
that God saved us and God savesus all the time.
All that stuff, I can be soIsraelite.
You know, you see theIsraelites with Moses and you're
like, guys, you know he doesthese amazing things, and three
days later they're worshipite.
You know you see the Israeliteswith Moses and you're like,
guys, you know he does theseamazing things and three days
later they're worshiping, youknow, gold cows.
It's like, what are you doing?
And it's like, oh wait, I dothat too.
You know it's like people think, oh my gosh, you had this
amazing experience, probablyalways going to have faith and
(20:00):
you're always.
You know, I'm still tempted toworry.
I'm still tempted to have fear, all those things, even though
that experience and a lot ofother amazing experiences have
happened in our lives.
I'm still tempted, likeeverybody else, to forget and
run the other way all the time.
But God is good and he ispatient and he's kind and he is
hilarious.
Um, and so yeah, that's alittle of our story.
(20:22):
Wow, wow.
Chris Grainger (20:24):
Yeah, what an
incredible story, guys.
I don't even know what to sayto that.
We're going to take a quickbreak.
We'll come right back and keepdigging in with Mitch.
I've got something big to share.
We're making a major shiftbecause we know the battle is
real and it's time more men hadaccess to the support they need.
For too long, guys have beentrying to carry the weight alone
(20:45):
pressure at work, tension athome, wounds from the past and a
world that demands strength butoffers no place to rest.
We see it, we've lived it, andthat's exactly why we built our
community.
It's a stronghold, a placewhere warriors can find rest,
truth and a band of brothersstanding beside them.
And starting now, we're makingit easier than ever to step in.
(21:07):
We've lowered the barrier tojust $15.99 a month.
That means, for less than thecost of a drive-thru lunch, you
can join a brotherhood that'scentered on Christ and built for
growth.
Inside you'll find access toour daily spiritual kickoffs
every Monday through Friday, ourlion lunches, our Bible studies
, our Friday Forge gatheringsall that and so much more.
(21:27):
Every man needs a stronghold, and you don't have to fight
alone.
If you've been waiting for theright time to jump in this is it
?
Go to thelionwithinus and jointhe community and see for
yourself what happens when irontruly sharpens iron.
So, mitch, I'm telling you, man, goosebumps first of all, as
(21:50):
you were, were going throughthat, I didn't know where it was
going to land.
But man, so my gracious brother, that is incredible.
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely god, god, moved in some incredible
ways there, maybe for you, forprofessionally, you know, yeah,
how did he?
How has he shown you the paththat he wants you to be on,
because obviously you work withcoaches, entrepreneurs, content
creators, I mean, he puts you onthat specific path.
(22:11):
How do you know that that wasthe path that he was calling you
to?
Mitch Matthews (22:15):
I love that.
So what I appreciate about Godis that God is calling me to be
all that he created me to be andthat that can be a lot of
different things in in differentseasons, right, and I know,
like, for me, uh, I had a seasonwhere I was in corporate sales
and pharmaceuticals and Iexcelled in that.
(22:35):
I really did.
It was.
It was funny we actually had totalk to our older son, ben, uh,
during that season, because hiskindergarten teacher called us.
I was selling pharmaceuticals, right, and his, his kindergarten
teacher, called us and I wasselling pharmaceuticals, right,
and his, his kindergartenteacher, called us and said, hey
, you need to talk to Ben abouthow he talks, about what you do.
And I said, well, why is thatshe?
said well, today we had the whatdo your moms and dads do talk
(22:59):
in kindergarten, and Ben said mydad sells drugs out of the
trunk of his car, so, uh, so wetalked with Ben about what that,
what that meant.
But yeah, so I had a lot ofsuccess with pharmaceuticals and
moved up the chain and gotpromoted into corporate training
and helped to run a trainingdepartment of a $2 billion
(23:19):
pharmaceutical company, allthose things.
But then I got promoted into abad fit job and hopefully you've
never had that.
But I got promoted into a badfit job.
It wasn't a bad job.
I really want to be clear aboutthat.
It was just a bad fit for meand I was kind of mad at God, to
be perfectly honest, when thathappened, because I had prayed
through that.
You know this opportunity andit felt like the right
(23:41):
opportunity.
And when I got in there withindays, like probably within hours
, I'm like, oh no, this is a badfit, but I'm wildly grateful
for that because God stillprovided during that time.
But it was a real wake up callto say, hey, the season has
changed.
You're not supposed to live therest of your days in this
industry.
I'm calling you to somethingelse, right?
(24:03):
And so he still used all ofthose things to prepare me for
that next season.
But he used that bad fit joband work through that bad fit
job to wake me up to say, hey, season's changing, get ready.
And so I started to say, okay, well, what does that look like?
And, you know, started to talkwith them about what does the
next season look like.
And he had he had always put,uh, you know, entrepreneurship
(24:26):
on my heart.
I had kind of forgotten aboutit.
To be honest, like that's whatI say is that you know, some,
some dreams get beat up and somedreams get buried, right, and
that's that I had always wantedto be an entrepreneur since I
was a teenager, but that hadjust kind of gotten buried by
comfort and success and otherthings and all that stuff.
So I started to say, hey, maybeit's time for that.
(24:48):
And then I started to look atdifferent options.
And one particular night it hadbeen a really hard day and that
bad fit job and I came home andmy wife and I think I married
an encourager like you did, somy wife brought me a magazine
and it was a business magazineand there was an article that
was profiling this reallysuccessful entrepreneur and I
(25:11):
started to read it and it reallydidn't hit.
I was like, oh, thank you.
But she's like, no, no, notthat article.
Look at the side article.
And there was this sidebararticle about this
entrepreneur's coach.
And she's like that's what youdo.
The things they're describingthat he does, that's what you do
.
The things they're describingthat he does, that's what you do
.
And so I started to read thisarticle, or this side article
(25:32):
about this coach.
I didn't honestly even realizethis was a thing right To be a
coach, a success coach, anentrepreneur's coach, all that
stuff.
So I started to read about thatand started to dream about that
, started to pray about that andstarted to explore that.
And so I went and got someadditional training to be a
coach and then started to dothat on the side and we prayed
(25:55):
about.
You know, it felt right, it wasstarting to click.
It wasn't necessarily easy, butit felt right and we thought it
was probably going to be about afive-year process to get this
thing launched and and to beable to leave my you know day
job, all those things.
But God, in a short period oftime, showed off and, you know,
(26:17):
pulled off some miracles, thingslike that, and we were able to
do that.
I thought it was going to befive years.
We wound up doing it in fivemonths and, um, yeah, god showed
off and, as has blessed ourbusiness.
It hasn't always been easy, buthe's always been trustworthy
and kind and funny and we'vebeen able to build a business
now where I coach and speak andthen we also train up coaches
(26:40):
and speakers as well.
And, yeah, it's just been apowerful, powerful journey, man
speak to the.
Chris Grainger (26:46):
I'm so glad you
said it's not easy, cause this
is where I lose a lot of guys at, sometimes Cause so many guys,
when they feel like maybe theylearned this in a church sermon
or just bad teaching, they thinkif you do, if you're doing what
God's called you to do, it'slike this cupcakes and Cadillacs
and rainbows.
It's just supposed to be thiseasy path.
But that's not been myexperience.
Obviously, it was not yourexperience as well.
(27:08):
So just speak to that why?
Because he's called you to it.
There's still work to do, andthere's still hard work to do
there.
Mitch Matthews (27:17):
Yeah, absolutely
Well, I love this topic, chris.
I'm so glad you brought it upbecause, especially when it
comes to following God in theworkplace, like in the
marketplace, correct I?
I love to dispel this myth thatif God's with you, it should be
easy, right, because I thinkthat is something that sets so
(27:39):
many people up for failure andit also causes so many people to
quit too early, and you knowit's one of those.
I know I can point to storyafter story in my own life that
you know I prayed for easy, tobe perfectly honest, chris, like
there are days where.
I pray for just a little bitfreaking easier.
Chris Grainger (27:58):
That's right.
Mitch Matthews (28:00):
But you know, I
look back and go, oh my gosh,
the number of times that Godused or worked through, because
I don't believe that God putsadversity into our lives
necessarily, but I do believethat he works through those
challenges to prepare us Right.
And you know like I can pointto so many different stories in
(28:20):
my life where he's done that.
But I also love biblicalstories, like I love Joseph, the
story of Joseph, like you know.
I know that you, a lot of yourlisteners, are humble, right,
and or they want to be.
They know they need to be morehumble.
Joseph was not humble, right?
Like he had these dreams.
(28:40):
He was probably a littlespoiled.
Uh, you know, he really talkedabout these dreams in a way that
he shouldn't have with hisbrothers, ticked his brothers
off all that stuff.
They sold him into slavery, thought about murdering him on
the way there, right, like, soldhim into slavery, all that
stuff.
And and then he gets this jobas a slave.
He excels, he brings excellence, probably not easy, but he
(29:02):
brings excellence.
And then he'd get accused ofrape and he gets sent to prison.
And then he's in the bowels ofthis prison and he brings
excellence and he starts to.
You know all these things Right.
And what I love about all thehigh points and the low points
of that story is in each one ofthe low points of this biblical
story of Joseph has says and Godwas with him.
(29:23):
You're like he just got soldinto slavery and God was with
him.
You're like he just got soldinto slavery and God was with
him.
He just got accused of rape andsent to prison and God was with
him.
And I don't know about you, butthere are days where I'm like
what is up with that?
That sure doesn't look like Godis with him, right.
But then when you read intothat story, then a God suddenly
(29:44):
happened and everybody probablyknows this story.
But you know, when you look atthe story, one of the other
massive discouragements, orpotential discouragements, was
that Joseph encouraged a coupleof guys and one of them then
went on to Pharaoh and as he wasleaving the prison, joseph said
, hey, remember me, tell the, tell the Pharaoh about me, right
(30:05):
, and he was probably.
He probably went back to hiscell and thought, okay, I'm
getting out of here, this isgreat.
And it said years later the guyremembered him, right, like how
discouraging could that havebeen too, but he stayed with it.
He kept bringing excellence, all those things.
And then a suddenly came.
The guy remembered him in God'stiming and said Pharaoh, you
(30:26):
need to meet this guy.
Right, you need to meet this, joseph, I met this cat in prison
.
You need to meet him.
And it said that he was whiskedfrom the jail, basically got a
quick shave, got a new set ofduds and he was in front of the
Pharaoh in hours.
I know some people think it wasprobably anywhere from an hour
to three hours where he was inhis prison cell and all of a
(30:48):
sudden, in front of Pharaoh, right, god, suddenly and all of
a sudden, within probably fourhours, he was in second command
of the largest country and themost you know, the biggest power
in the world.
Right, and you look at all thatpreparation.
You could have looked at it oneway, going man, god hates me.
(31:09):
You could look at it anotherway and go, oh, wow, god is
preparing me.
The challenge is, of course, wedon't know what's always on the
other side.
So it's that thing of trustingto say, okay, god, what are you
preparing me for?
What do I need to do today?
What do I need to learn today.
Where do I need to go today?
And help me trust you in thatright.
(31:32):
So I love that Again.
All those stories are tucked inthere in the Bible of going oh
wow, all right.
Yeah, it's not supposed to beeasy, but if God is with us, we
can also feel encouraged 100%,100%.
Guys, we're going to take aquick break.
Chris Grainger (31:49):
We'll come back
and keep digging into this.
With Mitch, we're making a bigchange that I think you're
really going to enjoy.
I spend a lot of time thinkingabout our spiritual kickoffs and
, honestly, I love doing themeach week so much so we started
doing them live every Mondaythrough Friday inside our
(32:10):
exclusive platform, and here'sthe best part we decided to give
full access, completely free,so now you can join our daily
spiritual kickoff space at nocost.
Every day, we go live to readthe Word, to encourage each
other and find simple andpowerful ways to apply God's
(32:30):
truth to our lives.
You'll even have the chance toengage with me directly, and if
you missed a live stream, don'tworry.
The videos are posted the sameday so you can catch up whenever
it works for you.
This is exclusivebehind-the-scenes content that
is not available anywhere else, and now we've removed every
(32:51):
excuse.
So if you're ready to getstarted, head over to
thelionwithinus and grab yourfree access today.
Let's grow together.
Bitch, I'm curious, for youTalk about not being easy, you
know.
You said you had a five-yearplan that turned to a five-month
(33:11):
plan.
Yeah, so it sounded like youhad some God nods along the way,
and I call them God nods, likeyou're getting some affirmation
from him.
So would you walk through maybewhat a couple of those nods,
those affirmations were, whatthose nods were, because I feel
like sometimes guys, guys, werelooking for the final picture,
where he may just be giving usthe next step and just
encouraging us to take that nextstep.
(33:31):
So what comes to mind there?
What?
Mitch Matthews (33:34):
I love this.
I love this question because italso allows me to speak to.
I don't know about you, butI've got a number of weaknesses
to Chris you know what I meanLike.
God's given me some gifts, buthe's also there.
I have some weaknesses and oneof my weaknesses is potentially
getting offended.
Right, getting frustrated andoffended by something, and
(33:54):
especially on the subject of it,should be easier.
Right, I talked about that.
I started to investigatecoaching.
I spent a lot of money on a bigcoaching program and training
and all those things, and Iemerged from that a better coach
, but I didn't even think aboutit.
There was no business trainingat all in this coach training
(34:16):
program.
And I was instantly frustratedand offended, right, like ah,
part of me was beating myself up, like why did I choose that
program?
There's no business training.
They're potentially offended, with the organization saying
there's no business training, all those things.
And I felt a little frustratedwith God, like why'd you lead me
to this training?
(34:37):
You know it's like there's thishuge hole, this gaping hole.
Why is that?
And one of the things that wasbeautiful at the time
frustrating and beautiful at thetime was God's like well, I
want to show you a way that'sgoing to work for you.
(34:58):
I'm like, oh, okay.
And he's like so I didn't wantyou to get influenced by the
things.
I want to show you somethingthat's going to work for you.
And then I felt the nudge, likekind of that thing of I'll show
you and then, if you want, youcan show others.
I was like, okay, all right, Ican do that, you know.
And so then we started to dosomething together where I just,
(35:19):
instead of somebody telling mewhat to do, I just started to do
it.
And then I got some goodmentoring like you, I believe in
mentoring and I surroundedmyself but with some really wise
entrepreneurs who helped toguide me on this.
And now we have what we callthe six figure sequence that we
teach other coaches.
But I look at it and go, ohyeah, I had to go through that
myself and in God, in some waysit was kind of a divine setup.
(35:44):
It was definitely a nudge to beable to say, hey, I want to
show you a way, I want to showyou a path, and in some ways I
needed to do that kind ofwithout influence and those
kinds of things.
So it made all the differencefor me.
And then I see that all the timenow that God wants to talk with
us as we face adversity, godwants to talk with us about all
(36:07):
of it, right, he's not waitingfor us to figure it out and then
go to him and tell him theresults.
He's wanting to talk to usabout all of it, and I think
that's another big part of theprocess.
I know for my wife and I too,you know a big part of it when
we were thinking through, youknow, when do we quit the day
job and and launch intoentrepreneurism and all those
(36:30):
things Like, when should we dothat?
And we just started to say, okay, we actually God, put on
our heart talk to me about yourleap number which at first we
were like, what does that evenmean?
Right, like.
But it was amazing because God,god was guiding both of us and,
and what's interesting, I thinka lot of people and me included
, when I first started thinkingabout prayer, I didn't quite
(36:52):
know how it could work and Idefinitely didn't think that God
would ever be specific.
You know what I mean.
I kind of thought that maybethere would be like lines or you
know, like kind of rainbows, butterflies and little ponies
type encouragement or kind ofthe inspirational poster kind of
things.
But no, god is strategic andGod can be specific.
(37:15):
He isn't always in prayer, butsometimes he can be very
specific.
And God laid this, what we nowcall the, the, the leap number
process on our hearts of saying, hey, talk to me.
And basically the whole thingfor us was I knew I could not
leave my day job, I couldn'treplace my day job salary a
(37:37):
hundred percent by doing thisthing on the side, but I knew
that for me it was about gettingto consistency.
I knew that for me it was aboutgetting to consistency, and so
what we did was we figured outthat our leap number was a
certain percentage of my incomefor a certain number of months.
That became our leap number.
(37:57):
So for me, if I could hit 35%of my income three months in a
row, I knew that I could thenleave my day job months in a row
.
I knew that I could then leavemy day job.
And you know, if I was, if Iwas able to hit that by while
doing that on the side, then Iwould probably be able to
replace that income when I wasable to work, you know, a
hundred percent of my time onour business.
(38:18):
And so that became our leapnumber.
And what was beautiful was thenwe had that 35 and three on
everything.
I was on our fridge.
That was something we looked aton our mirror in our bedroom,
all those things, and thatbecame a prayer target.
So what was beautiful aboutthat for us was that you know
(38:39):
that.
Then we were like, all right, lord, show us how to do it and
when you think we're ready, helpus to hit it.
And that allowed, I mean again, that sounds, I know, for me.
When I was first growing up, Iwould have never thought God
would be that specific.
And what's beautiful about theleap number I've done a podcast
on it since and all of that andwe talk about it in our training
(39:02):
programs as well.
Like some people, their leapnumber is more, like, you know,
50% for six months, which isreally hard to do, but, like you
know, it can change fordifferent people.
Some people it's, you know, 10%for two weeks.
Whatever, it is right, it'sthat.
But God wants to talk to usabout all of it and and what I
(39:22):
love about that is that he is avery conversational God, right,
and so to be able to say, okay, what?
What's my part in that today?
What do you want to do today?
And what's funny, too, is isthat he's also not afraid to
help us learn, and sometimesthose lessons are easy,
sometimes those lessons are hard.
So I know for us, when we weregoing after leap number first
(39:44):
our first month, I hit it.
I think we were just over 35%.
I'm like, oh, we have got thisnailed, it's like it's coming
Right.
And then the next month, gooseeggs, nothing.
And I was like, ah God, whereare you?
You know all those things Right, but God knew I had some more
things to learn and it and itwas just beautiful.
As far as I know, he knows mebetter than I know me, and so,
(40:07):
you know, part of it is he's gotto create ways to help me focus
and and those types of things.
So, as long as I can stay outof that offense that I mentioned
earlier and stay out of fear tothe best of my ability and and,
uh, you know, say Lord, I, Itrust you and help me where I
don't, um, it's amazing whathe's been able to do through our
business and and you know, since then we've we've been able
(40:29):
to, um, you know, make a bigimpact and and also then train
up thousands of other coachesand speakers and things like
that too.
So it's just a great honor anda lot of fun and it's definitely
not boring, as you will know.
Chris Grainger (40:44):
Well, maybe the
guys there's there's probably
lots of guys listening that areW2 guys, you know, and they're
considering taking that.
What's the if?
If you had that one piece ofadvice, you wish somebody would
have told you when you werefirst starting out.
You know what?
What would that be?
What that encouragement I knowyou're all about encouragement
what would that be to that guywho's listening right now, who's
just on the fence?
Mitch Matthews (41:04):
Yeah, absolutely
so.
Part of it is it's like whatwe've been talking about is to
talk with God about all of it,and I know that might sound
crazy, but it's like, or ormaybe too trite or too easy.
But talking with God about allof it, and especially for the W2
people, um, like, I don't knowabout you, chris, but like I saw
God move in a lot of differentways.
(41:25):
Obviously, I saw God move withour six miracles, those types of
things.
So it really wasn't hard for meto believe that God could move
and pull off miracles in thechurch, and it wasn't hard for
me to believe that he could pulloff miracles in hospitals,
right.
But somewhere somehow in mymind there was this imaginary
(41:45):
line that when I went off to mycorporate job, god met me at the
door and said see you when youget home.
Right, exactly Right, I don'tgo over there like, oh business,
I don't go over there, right,like there's no line.
There's no line.
That line does not exist.
God's like with us in all of it, and so that's a big part of it
(42:07):
.
He wants to talk with us aboutall of it.
And and I also believe that Goddoesn't just work through
entrepreneurs right.
I believe that God worksthrough us in every opportunity,
every position that we have, Iknow.
For me, one of the other bigimpacts of my faith was when I
was in that that trainingposition and the $2 billion
(42:27):
pharmaceutical job God plunkedme down to.
One of the other trainingmanagers was right next to me
and he had a big old Bible onhis desk which in the corporate
world at that time was a bigno-no.
But Pete, you know my goodfriend and somebody that I did a
lot of projects with.
He was like you know what I'lltake, I'll take the heat, I want
that Bible right there.
(42:48):
And he's like I know I needthat Bible right there.
And that was one more thingthat just helped me to know
God's everywhere right, god canmove, and all those things.
Now I will say that you know, for us, part of it was you know,
especially as I started to getthat nudge that we're supposed
to build our own business, startto do this thing.
Part of it for me and you'llappreciate this because I knew
(43:10):
your systems guy too was thatGod put in my heart to start
focusing on systems, not savings.
And this might sound a littlecrazy, but I what I you know,
especially in working with somany different mentors and
talking with people who had donethis kind of thing.
There were a lot of people whowere thinking about leaving
(43:30):
their job and the bigrecommendation was save up.
You know, have six months ofsavings or have a year of
savings and then go quit yourjob and then go build your
business.
And through wisdom of mentors, but also through what I was
getting, a prayer that felt alittle dangerous to me.
And what's interesting is a lotof the mentors that I talked
(43:50):
with.
They, you know, they reinforcedthat focusing on savings versus
systems is dangerous.
Because what a lot of people dois they say, all right, I'm
going to work my butt off, I'mgoing to get a year's worth of
savings, then I'm going to quitmy job and then I'll figure out
what I want to do with my life, with my business, all those
things.
But what winds up happening isthey'll say, well, I've worked
real hard, I've got a year'sworth of savings, so now I'm
(44:12):
going to take a month off, I'mjust going to give myself a
break and then I'm going tostart the business process.
Right, and then a month goes byand then somebody gets sick and
it's like, oh, you know whatMom's sick, I'll go live with
mom for a business and they'rein a world of hurt, right,
whereas I found working on oursystems, the business systems
(44:36):
systems I know this is whatyou're doing as well it's like
working on the business systemsof being able to say, all right,
how do I get a business up andrunning that I can sustain, even
doing a part-time, doing it onthe side?
I'm going to work on thosebusiness systems because that if
I build that, then when I doleap, when I do step out, right,
(44:59):
I'll be stepping into systemsthat are already working, as
opposed to just a savings that Ihope will work someday, right.
So God, just put it on my heartto to focus on the systems of
actually building a business,right.
And and what's beautiful aboutbuilding a business, when you're
building a business on the side, is oftentimes I always say and
(45:21):
we, a lot of our, the peoplethat are in our coach training
program and speaking trainingprograms uh, they're doing it on
the side.
And I said, well, that's thebest time to start a business
and the best way to build abusiness is when you're forced
to not do it 60 hours a week, not do it, you know all the time
when you're forced to do that.
Then I said you know a lot ofour folks.
(45:42):
I'll say, hey, if you can dothis you know business in 10
hours a week, then maybe don'twhen when you decide to do it
full-time.
If you do decide to do itfull-time, don't just assume
that you've got to do it 50, 60hours a week.
Right, continue to use thesesystems, build these systems,
but also build a life so thatyou have the flexibility and
ability to go do the things thatGod's calling you to do in your
(46:06):
life as well.
So, my, the big thing for ushas been focusing on systems, um
, and obviously savings is not abad thing.
I, you know, fully, fullyrecommend and endorse building
savings and and wealth.
Uh, you know, and honor Godwith those things.
But focus on the systems first,um, and then that savings and
wealth can come.
Chris Grainger (46:28):
Mitch.
Great insight, great greatencouragement.
Thank you so much for that, andas we kind of approach the end
of our time here, I'd love to doa lightning round with you,
mitch, just to have a bit of funas we go towards the end.
So what's a hobby?
Something that you enjoy doingfor fun.
Mitch Matthews (46:45):
I am a big hiker
.
Also, I have a big dog, I havean Akita and he needs quite a
bit of walking, which is great.
So it's a built-in workoutprogram.
You know, like I might, I mightfudge and going to the gym, but
when, when hero my dog looks atme, I'm like, oh, I can't fudge
, I'm taking this walk.
So, uh, that we love, I lovehiking, I love explore.
We live in Iowa now but we'velived in different places and
(47:08):
spaces and love the mountainsand things like that.
So, yeah, we get a lot ofhiking in.
Chris Grainger (47:12):
That's awesome,
awesome.
After the hiking and all thatexercise, what's your favorite
food?
What's your go-to?
Mitch Matthews (47:20):
Oh boy, I do
like to eat.
That's why I have to exercise.
Chris Grainger (47:24):
You know what I
mean so.
Mitch Matthews (47:26):
I'm a big fan,
so it's fun.
I like to create things likeour.
Our son just got on the busthis week to be deployed, but
there were certain things.
He wanted to have spaghetti, hewanted to have a stew.
We have a family recipe forstew and I love like diving deep
on those things and and that, but I also don't mind a burrito
(47:50):
the size of a football either.
So, uh, those are, those are Idon't.
I don't.
I love.
I love making spaghetti, I lovemaking stew, but uh, the
burritos I'll leave to theprofessionals, but I try to get
one of those a week.
There you go.
Chris Grainger (48:02):
There you go.
That's awesome.
What about superpowers?
I like asking this one If you,if you had a superpower, which
one would you pick and how wouldyou use it?
Mitch.
Mitch Matthews (48:10):
Oh man, come on
Cause, yeah, I mean, we got.
You got flight, you gotstrength.
Um, I will say uh, lately, andespecially with having two boys
now, one on the other side ofthe planet, one on the other
side of the country I thinkflight might be kind of cool,
right, like, uh, we were, wewere thinking about we have a
(48:30):
family cabin out in South Dakotaand we had a little extra time
as we were getting ready, beenready to get on the bus and all
those things, and we had aboutan extra hour and a half and I
was like what if we could justrun out to the cabin for just an
hour?
Right, like we were, we wereall talking about like, oh, we
can just take one quick trip onthe lap of a hike that we love
out there.
(48:50):
And that was, that wasliterally a conversation we had
yesterday and we're like, well,if we had a plane, if we had a
helicopter, those thingswouldn't be fast enough.
But then flight, yeah, and I'llfly.
That's right, we can we can getit done right.
I mean superman chris for reevechanged the like timing on the
planet by flying fast enough.
So I'd have today, I'd have togo with flight 100%, man, I'm
(49:13):
with you on that one.
Chris Grainger (49:14):
That would be a
great one to have.
So how about when you look backover the last year, where did
you spend too much time?
We always try to give guysinsights to.
Maybe we don't always stewardthe time well, but anything
comes to mind where you think, man, I wasted a lot of time here
.
Mitch Matthews (49:31):
Oh yeah, so I'm.
I am a recovering worrier, Um,not a warrior.
I said that once in a speech.
I was like I'm a recoveringworrier and somebody came up and
like thank you for your service.
I was like, no, no, no,recovering worrier, not warrior.
Um, and so I am.
I am, uh, better than I wasyesterday, but I still have work
(49:52):
to do, Um, and I know, you knowJesus talks about fear a lot
for a big reason, right, and Ithink people that are called to
do big things often werevisionaries.
I know you're, you're a bigvisionary and that's a gift set,
right, Like that's a gift fromGod to be a visionary.
The challenge with that giftset oftentimes is that because
(50:14):
we can see big, right, we alsotend to see all the things that
could go wrong, Right, and so Iknow for me, like I'm, I'm
working on it, I am gettingbetter, I'm diving into
different ways to go deeper inthe word and to be in
relationship and and to pray andall those things, but I still,
(50:34):
you know, if I look at the lastyear, I still spend more time,
at least being tempted to worryand be in fear, uh, than I want
to, and I love that that story,One of the stories that I'm just
uh fixated with and just loveis there's a story in Mark nine
and I love, I love the Bible.
Bible's so freaking cool, Right, but I know about, like, if I,
(50:56):
if I was in charge of writingthe Bible, the Bible would
probably be about 25% of what itactually is, Cause I'd I'd
probably be tempted to removeall the stories that make humans
look bad.
But I love how God's like yep,you guys are a mess and I love
working with you.
So I got to you know, so hekeeps the stories in there.
(51:19):
But one of my favorite storiesis the dad who brings his kid to
Jesus and this the kid probablyhad epilepsy because it said he
was having seizures and to thepoint of getting thrown into
fires.
And, uh, you know, I and I justcan't even imagine, can you I
mean, you've got your beautifuldaughters Like I can't imagine
being at a time where you, youknow, like, like you, you don't
have any options, Like there'sno doctors that can, all the
(51:41):
doctors are shaking their headssaying, nope, can't do anything
for you, Right?
And this dad brings his kid toJesus and says can you help him?
Will you help him.
Could you, can you heal him?
And Jesus says do you believe Ican?
And the dad gives the bestresponse, One of the best
response the Bible.
Like I believe and help me withmy unbelief.
And I love that Jesus didn't doa qualifier going wait, are you
(52:04):
at 1%, Are you at 90%?
He just said I can work withthat and he healed the kid and I
just I love that God is notwaiting for us to be perfect,
Right?
He's just saying, hey, Ibelieve.
Yeah, that's awesome, I'll meetyou in that unbelief.
You bet I'll meet you in that.
Let's go, let's talk about allof it, Right?
So that's, if you ask me,that's something I'm I'm working
(52:27):
on and getting again gettingbetter every day, but still not
where I want to be.
Chris Grainger (52:33):
Yet I love that
answer, man.
Last one for you here in thelightning round is what do you
hope the guys remember the mostfrom our conversation today?
Mitch Matthews (52:39):
Yeah, that, that
my prayer, is that each one of
us and I know this is a bigvision for you as well that each
one of us can be more of whoGod created us to be.
I was thinking about comparisonthis morning, and comparison
it's interesting.
Comparison is one of thosethings of you know our, our
brains are designed, they, they?
There there's evolutionarypsychology.
I don't believe in evolution asfar as across species, but I do
(53:03):
believe, believe a little bitin evolutionary psychology,
which is just how our brainshave adapted over time.
And they say that withinevolutionary psychology, they
talk about upward and downwardcomparison and that that in some
ways it's good, like that backin the time where we would get
kicked out of villages formaking bad decisions.
And getting kicked out ofvillages may meant you were
(53:25):
going to be eaten by a tiger ora lion that night.
You know, like having someupward, downward comparison
going am I being a good memberof this community?
Am I bringing value?
Am you know how am I doingcompared to the rest of the
village?
Some of that is good, butcomparison is deadly when it
comes to and I think the enemyhas just had a heyday with
(53:47):
social media and comparison, obviously, and part of it is,
like you know, we think we arerunning races with everybody
that we look at and God's likenow, I want you to be.
All that I was, I created you tobe, and that's that's what I
want to encourage every listenerto hear today is that we want
them I know you do too Like wewant them to be all God created
(54:09):
them to be.
Their skill sets, their gifts, their superpowers, all those
things, and and that's my prayerfor our boys every night is
Lord, help them to be all thatyou created them to be.
That's my prayer for my wifehelp her to be all that you
created her to be, which means Ialso need to let go of some of
the control of what I think theyneed to be Right and to say all
right, god, what do you wantthem to be?
(54:30):
And so that would be.
My heart would be that theywould have that kind of
conversation with God, becausethere's core elements that never
change about who God's createdus to be, and then there are
some elements that are seasonal, and sometimes he's going to
call us to one thing in a seasonof what we might do with our
hands and the work that we dounder our career or our career
(54:51):
track or whatever, and thenthose things.
So those seasonal elementsmight shift over time.
So but that just makes for agood conversation with God too.
Chris Grainger (55:01):
This has been
great.
