What does it mean to be truly pro-life? In this soul-stirring episode, we explore the crucial distinction between being merely "pro-life" and embracing a "pro-abundant life" stance that actively engages with those who are vulnerable in our communities. The dangerous idea floating around Christian circles today is that speaking truth or voting occasionally is sufficient. But James challenges us to a faith that gets its hands dirty—caring for orphans and widows while remaining unpolluted by the world's self-centered values. This isn't about tweeting the right things or winning theological arguments; it's about showing up consistently for those in need.

We’re going live every weekday with our Daily Spiritual Kickofffree and exclusive inside our community. Join us for a powerful Word, real encouragement, and practical ways to lead with faith at home and work.

Chris Grainger (00:01):
Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast
serving Christian men who arehungry to be the leaders God
intended you to be.
I'm your host, chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, fellas, spiritualkickoff time.
Let's go.
Okay.
Scripture for this one is in thebook of James, my favorite book
of the Bible.
First chapter, 27th, 2-7thverse.
Okay, it says 27th, 2-7th verse.

(00:23):
Okay, it says Religion that God, our Father, accepts as pure
and faultless is this to lookafter the orphans and widows in
their distress and keep oneselffrom being polluted by the world
.
Fellas, I can't even believe wehaven't covered this verse yet
in our spiritual kickoff.
So let's get into it.
I'm excited to dive into itwith you again.

(00:44):
If you enjoy these and I knowyou guys do head over to
thelionwithinus, because we do aspiritual kickoff Monday
through Friday in our LionWithin Us community.
And here's the best part it'scompletely free.
We open that up, so you guysjust pop in.
You can jump on the live feedwhen I'm doing it.
If you can't make the live feed, we put those videos every day
in the community.
So, boom, it's right there foryou.

(01:05):
Consume that content and thegreat part is that is exclusive
content.
We don't put it anywhere else.
It doesn't go on youtubechannel or anything like that.
We're not using it for shortsand on that junk.
We are strictly reading god'sword and encouraging men each
and every day.
It's a great way to get started.
It's a whole lot better thanStarbucks.
Let's go bro.
So thelinewithinus is whereyou'll find it.

(01:28):
So this verse is in the book ofJames and we need to know where
that is.
That's in your New Testament.
We don't want to take anythingfor granted.
James is the half-brother ofJesus.
We've got to recognize that.
That's again, probably the bestevidence that the gospel is
real and that Jesus is real.
It says his brother believed hewas Messiah, and you can find
this book right after Hebrews.
Okay.
So if you're in your NewTestament, you're flipping

(01:49):
through, you get to the book ofHebrews.
Keep flipping a little bit, then you'll get to James, okay.
So this week we're going to betalking directly about pro
abundant life, not just pro life, pro abundant life, pro
abundant life, just pro life, pro abundant life.
And we're going to be talkingto him also about why we need to

(02:09):
step up for the vulnerable, because there's a really
dangerous idea floating outthere fellas, particularly a lot
of Christian dudes that I knowof that.
The danger, the idea, is thisthat speaking truth is enough,
ok, that our role for being proabundant life is just to have a
strong opinion.
Maybe we just go to the pollevery few years and then we're

(02:31):
just supposed to move on withour life.
But James is like no bro, thatain't it.
This ain't what this is about.
It doesn't say pure religion istweeting Right, it doesn't.
Or pure religion is arguingTheology.
No, it's cause for us to carefor the vulnerable and living a
clean, and living 100 percent ofa clean life before God in this

(02:57):
very polluted world.
So here's a question you needto ask Like are you actually
doing that?
You know, I know that can besuper convicting, but again,
that's why you listen to theline with Dennis, because this
can't just be anti-abortion,this has to be pro-abundant life
, fellas, because it can't justbe enough to push against that.
The gospel calls us for more.
We got to be advocates, we gotto be mentors, we got to be

(03:18):
protectors, we got to beproviders, period.
So being pro-life andpro-abundant life, being some,
seeing the women who aresometimes in these, in these
crisis situations, not as aproblem to fix no-transcript.

(03:42):
So we're called to step up,though we have to recognize that
we're not called to step back.
We're called to step up and weneed to step up to mentor young
dads who've never been one.
You know how huge would that be.
We need to step up to supportthese pregnancy centers that are
really doing the frontline work.
And then we also need to stepup to foster, adopt and

(04:02):
financially support those who do.
I'm thinking about my brother, marcus man, right now, who does
this.
He does it all the time.
I love him to death.
He's just out there and he'sdoing that on a consistent basis
and I have so much love for himfor doing it.
And James, when we readScripture again, it's not just a

(04:23):
map, it's a mirror.
His words are a mirror Becausethey're asking us like is your
faith more than just words, bro?
Is it doing something forpeople that are in distress?
Well, are you living a lifethat is unpolluted by this
self-centered world that'saround you?
You know where comfort isassessed upon and we want to

(04:44):
quickly dismiss others.
We have to be careful, man, because life is not hiding
behind some easy religion.
You have to get dirty, you'vegot to get into it, and when you
do that, it's beautiful becauseit's caring for the least of

(05:05):
those, the lost and the onesthat feel left out.
And I just want to give you acouple things to consider in
this particular spiritualkickoff episode around starting
points.
The first one is you've got tobe engaged, bro.
Engage, start connecting withsome local ministries and
helping these women and childrenand families that are going

(05:25):
through this.
And that just means simplyshowing up and then discipling
Again.
Probably the biggest one for thelisteners of the line within us
is this discipleship.
And for you guys out there, focus on the bros.
Find that young man or newfather and start walking with

(05:47):
him.
Help him see and understandwhat godly manhood looks like.
There's many guys out there whodon't have that.
They've never had it.
I was blessed with a wonderfulfather.
Not everybody was, so thatmeans we have to take the time,
and this is the hard part.

(06:07):
Take the time to actually pourin and to care for others.
And then the third point give, man.
I'm talking about time, talentand treasure right.
Give so you can fuel someoneelse's hope and make it count,
guys, because at the end of theday, the real men don't just

(06:29):
believe in life, they build it.
You get that.
They don't just believe in life, they build it Because that's
the faith that God honors, that's the mission worth giving
everything for.
So the question of the week, this week, guys, is how are you
protecting the vulnerable whereyou can?
Now, you can't cover everywhere.

(06:51):
Nobody can.
God can, but you're notomnipresent.
He is so in your circle ofinfluence, in the territory that
God has given you, what are youdoing to protect the vulnerable
?
And if you can't answer that, what are you going to protect
the vulnerable?
And if you can't answer that, okay, what are you going to do
to change it?

(07:11):
And fellas, when we starttalking about this abundant life
, it can be like what in theworld is he talking about?
And if you're not a believer,it wouldn't make any sense.
And I'm also not naive enoughto think that everyone who
listens to the Lion Within Us isa believer.
So if you're listening to thispod, maybe something caught your
eye.
I don't know, and you'recurious.
You've never surrendered yourlife to the Lordship of Christ.

(07:32):
I'm going to give you a chanceto do that right now, and I just
want you to know there's aperfect design that God put in
place when he made everythingand he spoke, spoke, spoke,
spoke, spoke all these thingsinto existence.
Then, after that, he took hishands and he formed Adam, the
first man, and he breathed thebreath of life into him.
And Adam sat up and he was faceto face with God and I just I

(07:55):
can't even imagine what that waslike, but it was beautiful, it
was perfect, god's perfectdesign.
Then, unfortunately, sin enteredthe world, okay, and that
created this major gap between aholy and righteous God in us,
and we need to remember thatthat is the standard.
Your neighbor, your buddy, who's cheating on his wife,

(08:20):
people who are in the prisonsystems they are not who we
should compare ourselves with.
That's not it Wrong standard, the only comparison that we have
, the right comparison, rather,is God.
And when we compare who we areand the actions we take and the
life we live compared to a holyand righteous God, guess what?

(08:41):
Every doggone one of us fallsshort.
We just do.
There's nothing we can do toovercome it.
Okay, so we try.
We try to overcome it with goodworks and by just being a nice
person and helping little oldladies across the street.
From time to time we'll pullout and drop a 20 in an offering

(09:03):
plate or something like that, and we just feel like, well, I
just got to be, I just got to be, just do some good stuff.
And while there's nothing wrongwith serving and doing good to
others, the problem lies when westart to think that that's
going to earn our salvation.
And it can't, because it can'tbe bought.
And I kind of wish that I couldbring a better news to you

(09:25):
because, like, if you could justdo this checklists of stuff,
it'd be a whole lot easier, because then you could just get
through the checklist and bedone right.
Hey, I'm an engineer.
I love this, bro.
I got two lists right here infront of me.
I love checking stuff off thelist, but it doesn't work that
way.
Reality is we can't coachourselves up enough to overcome

(09:46):
the sin that's in our life.
So if we can't be coached toovercome, what do we need?
We need a savior to step in anddo for us what we can't do for
ourselves.
See the primary differencethere?
And luckily for us, that saviorhas a name it's Jesus.
And that's why I say rescuemission, because he literally

(10:07):
came to save us.
So he left heaven on thatrescue mission, was born of the
Virgin, performed all thedifferent miracles and teachings
, fulfilled all the prophecies, all the stuff they said about
the coming Messiah.
Jesus checked the boxes and thenhe did the most ultimate of
ultimate Of sacrifice, with loveand, ultimately, redemption,

(10:33):
when he willingly went to thecross and died and paid the
penalty for sin For the entireworld, for you, for me, for the
guy on death row.
He did it for everybody.
Jesus paid it all Because thatis the penalty of sin Is death.
Guy on death row, he did it foreverybody.
Jesus paid it all because thatis the penalty of sin is death.
And he died on the cross.
He didn't faint or go to sleepor pass out.

(10:54):
He died, okay, so don't missthat.
Okay.
And then from there they tookJesus and they took him down off
the cross and they laid himinto a tomb Just think about
this tomb where they ultimatelywould prepare his body to be
buried.
The tomb was more like anAirbnb for Jesus.

(11:20):
He only needed it three days.
That's the fundamentaldifference between a Christian
and the rest of the religionsout there.
It's because our Savior, ourMessiah, the one that we put our
hope and our trust in, he'sliving, he's breathing, he's
right here in the Father rightnow.
And all the other religions outthere, the people that founded

(11:42):
those, guess what?
They're still dead.
They're in the ground, theyjust are.
We have a living hope.
That's Christ.
And so what you have to do, ifyou've never really taken the
step forward, it starts withthat first self-reflection.
Oh man, I am kind of jacked up.

(12:03):
I am indeed a sinner.
The sin is anything thatseparates us from God.
I am a sinner and I desperatelyneed a Savior.
Then, once you recognize that, okay, well, who's the Savior?
Well, okay, well, I believethat Jesus is the Son of God.
I truly believe that in myheart.

(12:27):
So once you kind of get thosefundamental boxes checked, then
what do you do next?
Well, you better confess Him asLord, fully surrender to him,
confess him as Lord and Savior.
Say, jesus, my way has notworked.
I recognize that I'm a sinnerand need a Savior, and I
recognize you are that Savior.
I am confessing you as Lordover my life.
This is not Lord over Sundayboys, this is Lord over every

(12:56):
day, every moment, over yourfinances, over your marriage,
over your parenting, over yourcareer, the whole deal.
Lord over it all.
And once you do that the HolySpirit's going to come, you have
a new heart, the scales willfall off and you'll be walking
with him and the Holy Spirit atthat point.
That's going to be your guide.
Then there's a whole process ofsanctification after that, but
we're not going to get into thatright now.
The main thing right now is ifyou haven't accepted Christ as

(13:19):
your Lord and Savior and youfeel like you're being called to
do that right now, then let'sjust pray together.
Look, don't get crossed up andthink you know you have to be in
a church or you have to go downfront.
It doesn't work that way.
God's everywhere at all times.
So you could be on a treadmill, you could be in a car, you
could be on a walk, whatever itmay be, you could be at work.
And you recognize right nowI've never really fully

(13:41):
surrendered my life to Christ.
I need to do it, and let's doit together.
I'm going to pray for you righthere.
So, father, for that onelistener who's just ready, they
recognize the error in theirways.
They recognize that their wayis not working.
They recognize, father, thatthey need to fully surrender to
you.
I just pray.
You hear their prayer, pray.

(14:02):
You just touch them in a mightyway.
Pray, you put people in theirpath.
That will guide and direct themon this new discipleship
journey that starts right now.
And we just love you, we praiseyou, we thank you for being the
Savior that we don't deserve.
It's just in your name we prayAmen.
All right, fellas.
So look, if you just acceptedChrist, I want to hear from you.
So, chris at the lion within, dot us.

(14:24):
That's my email address.
Send me an email.
We'll send you a bunch of freeresources to get you hooked up
