Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Land
Within Us, a podcast serving
Christian men who are hungry tobe the leaders God intends you
to be.
I'm your host, chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, fellas, fun Fridaytime.
Let's get into it, okay?
So you made it through anotherweek.
Hallelujah, all right.
Scripture of the week this weekis in the book of Ecclesiastes,
the fourth chapter, the 10thverse.
It says for if either of themfalls, the one will lift up his
(00:25):
companion, but woe to the onewho falls when there is not
another to lift him up.
Guys, that's a powerful verse.
That's a verse that we need, asmen, to understand, to
recognize to be true.
Okay, now, if you want somedeeper reflections on that verse
, listen to the spiritualkickoff episode.
So go back to in your podcastfeed.
You'll find it right there.
(00:45):
Listen to that, because Ireally take some time to unpack,
to reflect, and I'm going to avery at the time of this
recording.
It's a very difficult season forme.
I'm sitting here with a brokenankle.
I got surgery coming up in aweek.
It's just, it's stressful, it'svery stressful.
Hopefully, by the time this, this episode, actually comes out
, maybe I'll be a lot furtherdown the recovery path, but
right now I'm in a lot of pain.
(01:06):
It's been very just a setbackthat I did not anticipate.
Again, accidents happen, right.
So that verse for me is hittinghard right now and maybe it is
for you.
And if you need someone tospeak to, if you need some
encouragement, please reach out.
Please reach out, okay, go totheline, the line within dot us.

(01:26):

So again, the line within dotus.
Go check that out, because ifyou like the spiritual kickoff
episode each week and on thepodcast, we do it monday through
friday, guys, monday throughfriday, every day in the
community and it's all for free.
Check it out right there, okay.
So the conversation with TimTimberlake was awesome.
(01:48):
I really love connecting withPastor Tim again because he's
from my neck of the woods aswell, but just really enjoy the
conversation.
The timing of his book theysent me the book a while back
and I had put it off and then, when my injury happened, I had a
little more time to read andall of a sudden, as soon as I
(02:08):
picked it up, I was like, wow, this, this is divine timing.
So if you're going through adifficult season or trial right
now, you got some, some bumps inyour road.
He really has some salienttruths in this book that I think
will serve you well.
So I really just enjoy theconversation with Pastor Tim.
Highly encourage you guys to gocheck that one out, okay, so
(02:29):
let's get into what the funFriday is all about.
We do a health, wealth and aself tip each and every week.
If you've never listened to theshow, that's what this is all
about.
The health is how do westrengthen our mind and our
bodies?
Okay, we have to have them bothdialed in.
The wealth is how do we becomebetter stewards of our finances
and our careers?
And the self is, ultimately, what do we need to do to improve
as husbands and fathers?
Pretty easy, right?
(02:56):
So let's get into it.
I mentioned this in the episodewith Tim.
He didn't go too in-depth withit, but I got to share it, guys,
because this acronym isabsolutely incredible.
It's called Get Help H-E-L-P.
Ok, and it starts with humbleyourself, humble yourself, and
that's the hard part for lots ofus guys.
Right, we have to actuallyrecognize, to be true, that we
have a problem and we needsupport.
That is difficult.
The E is explain your needclearly.
(03:17):
We can't be vague.
If you need help, if you needit for me right now, I need
somebody to cut my grass.
So my neighbor, ok, can youplease cut my grass?
Like I don't need.
Well, when you get a chance, like no bro, can you cut the
grass, and when can you do itLike if you need help.
Let's be specific and clear inthat, because that gives the
other person clarity torecognize whether or not they
can or cannot help you right now.
(03:38):
Okay, the L is let other peoplein.
Now, this is the hardest part ofasking for help, especially for
me, is letting other people in,and during this season of my
broken ankle, I have had to askfor help more times than I have
probably in my entire life andit is absolutely been the
hardest thing I've ever done.
(03:59):
I'm not going to lie, I'm notgoing to say this stuff is easy.
No, it's not easy, but I'mlearning and I know I have to
let other people in and fellas,we just have to recognize that
to be true.
And then we got to plan ournext step, that's the P.
Plan your next step OK, becauseif we've got the help and
people have come in, we can'tjust live there.
(04:19):
No, we got to be moving forward, we have to be improving.
So you don't want to just stayin this, this perpetual state of
just help, help, help all thetime, all the time, all the time
.
Eventually we got to do thework ourselves, but I thought
this acronym was absolutelyphenomenal spot on and beginning
with humbling ourselves, explaining that need, letting
other people in and planningyour next step.
(04:41):
So hopefully that encouragesyou guys mentally If you need
help.
We just gave you a framework toask for.
Okay.
Now the wealth tip again goingthrough this injury right now.
Health savings accounts If youhave a health savings account an
HSA they're often calledopportunity in your employer
utilize it.
Look at that account.
(05:02):
If there's opportunities foryou to put more funds into that
account each month, I wouldencourage you to do it to at
least cover your maximum out ofthe pocket copay, okay, but it's
a great way to actuallyaccumulate some wealth and do
some some investing within thatthose accounts as well, so that
when accidents like this happen, like I'm walking through right
(05:24):
now major accident with my ankleyou'll have some funds.
You don't have to pull out onyour emergency funds.
You'll be able to pull out ofthis account.
So if you're if you're notfamiliar with a health savings
account, go ask your HRrepresentative at your work.
What do they even offer?
Some companies do, somecompanies don't.
So I'm not saying everybody hasan option to an HSA, but if you
do have an HSA opportunity, youwant to at least explore it and
(05:47):
see what would be good for sofar as protecting risk for you
and your family.
Ok, all right, now, self-tip,this has been a hard one too.
This has been a hard episode towrite.
Let your kids see you ask forhelp.
Ok, and I'm learning this thehard way.
My kids rarely ever ask got tosee me ask for help.
(06:11):
Because I'm daddy, I jump in, Ijust do it, I'm going to do the
work, I'm going to put my handsto the plow, I'm going to get
it done right and if they can'tdo it right, I'm just going to
do it for them, because I'm justdaddy.
Sometimes it's just easier forme to just do it.
They're literally walkingthrough a season right now where
every day, every day, their dadis asking them for help.
(06:31):
Not because I'm trying to abuseit, but because I need it.
I need them to help carry mystuff to my office so I can do
the work.
I need them to help me fix mydinner and take my plate up from
the dinner table.
I need them to help me bringstuff to me when I'm trying to
prop my leg up to get somerelief from pain.
(06:52):
It's nonstop.
Can you help do this?
I need them to help me with thebabies so far as getting them
cleaned up and getting thembaths and stuff like that.
I can't jump in and do itanymore, at least for this
season, and this has been verydifficult for me, but hopefully
it's been an opportunity forthem to see their dad vulnerable
(07:12):
enough and willing enough to toask them, because I love them
and I trust them and I know thatthey love me.
Your kids need to see that Don't.
Don't wait till you have tohave something like I'm going
through right now with a brokenankle to recognize the value of
incorporating your kids andletting them be part of helping
(07:35):
you.
They can help you.
They may not do it the way thatyou would do it, but they would
love the opportunity, love theopportunity to be asked by you
for their help.
All right, fellas, that's yourthree tips.
Get help, that's your humbleyourself.
Explain your need clearly, letother people in and plan your
next step.
That's the health tip.
The wealth tip is that HSAhealth savings account OK.
(07:58):
And then the self tip is letyour kids see you, ask for help,
ok.
So the book of the week, obviously, the Bumpy Road to
Better by Pastor Tim Timberlake, unlocking the Hidden Power in
Hard Things.
Love this book.
It's a quick read.
I forget how many chapters itis.
Actually I'll tell you, guys,it's 23 chapters, but they're
super short.
I like three pages a chapter orsomething.
(08:18):
It's not very long chaptersLots of practical insights and
reflections and ways to takethis and apply it to your life,
guys.
So highly, highly, encourageyou to get this book.
The Bumpy Road to Better.
