So the scripture of the weekthis week, 2 Corinthians chapter
10, fifth verse, says, Wedestroy arguments and every
lofty opinion raised against theknowledge of God and take every

thought captive to obey Christ.
So that spiritual kickoffepisode, fellas, which was in
your last the last podcast inyour podcast feed, that's where
I took that verse and I tried tounpack it to explain how I
simplify and apply it, what theSpirit has shown to me, and
hopefully that's going toencourage you along the way as
well.
And I've kind of been tellingyou guys this week, uh, we're

really focusing a lot onanxiety.
And this particular episode fortoday is derived directly from a

So we're gonna kind of unpackthis and and just work through

this topic of anxiety togetheragain.
This is something that's beenpersonally something that I've
struggled with a lot in my life.
Maybe you have as well, or maybeyou know others who are who are
just kind of anxious guys,right?
It's okay.
We're just gonna try to workthrough it.
I'm gonna try to give you someencouragement along the way
because that fear is uh is real.
And when fear starts to creepin, we have to be super

(02:34):
intentional about what we'redoing, okay, and how we manage
that.
And and Matthew, uh, Jesusactually tells us in chapter
fift in chapter six, he says, Itherefore I tell you, do not be
anxious about your life, or whatyou're gonna eat, or what you're
gonna drink, or about your body,what you're gonna put on it.
It's like not life more thanfood and the body more than
clothing.
He tells us, look at the birdsof the air.

(02:55):
They neither sow nor reap norgather in the barns, and yet
your heavenly father feeds them.
Are you not more valued thanthey?
Which one of you, being anxious,can add a single hour to your
span of life?
He tells us a little bitfurther, but seek first the
kingdom of God and hisrighteousness, and all these
things will be added to you.
Therefore, do not be anxiousabout tomorrow, for tomorrow
will be anxious enough onitself.

(03:17):
Sufficient for the day is itsown trouble.
So, fellas, that's justbeautiful scripture that Jesus
is given is giving us.
And for me, I when that anxioushappens, it's like here we go
again.
Like the mind starts racing, andI can feel my heart pounding,
uh, the or restlessness.
Like for me, it's a a lot ofrestlessness, restlessness

(03:38):
starts to take over.
And uh, if if you ever have everexperienced anxiety, you know
what I'm talking about.
Maybe you this that's how youfeel it for you as well.
And I remember directly when itfirst entered my life, and it
was about 15 years ago, okay?
And here's the deal.
What happened 15 years ago?

(03:58):
I found out I was gonna be a dadfor the first time.
So, I mean, it was awesome, bro.
I mean, I remember lying in bedand I was wide-eyed, and I
realized that my life as I knewit was about to change forever.
And there was this fear thatjust flooded over me that uh I
didn't know what to do with.

(04:18):
I was pumped to be a dad.
I mean, don't get me wrong.
I was super pumped to be a dadbecause I love my kids.
My oldest daughter just I lovethem so much.
But that fear of the unknown forme at the time of not knowing
what to expect, that was superoverwhelming.
And fight or fright didn't win.

(04:40):
Like I had to actually dosomething, I had to move.
And for me, flight uh is thatusual response.
Like I can't just sit still.
So if anxiety starts to grip me,sitting still and waiting it out
almost feels like animpossibility.
And when I start to reflectingon it, like I wasn't running
because the future was bad.

(05:01):
I was running because the futurewas outside of my control.
And that was too much to handle.
And you may be thinking, Chris,you're you're a moron.
Like kids, people have kids allthe time.
What's the big deal, man?
Like you know, you need to stepup here.
And I and that's fair.
Like I get it, it's fair.
But I just want to tell you onething.
Anxiety is personal.

(05:24):
It's personal.
The triggers may vary, but atthe core, it's usually the same
story.
We're losing our grip of controlof something.
Okay?
I mean, just think about that.
We're losing the grip of controlof something.
That's why Jesus is telling usin Matthew 6, it's it's it's
beautiful the way he says it.
It's simple, it's verybeautiful, but it's also hard to

(05:46):
live out, isn't it?
But it's also comforting for meto know that even 2,000 years
ago, anxiety was still a commonstruggle.
This is before smartphones and24-7 news and media saturation
and notifications and email,people still wrestled with worry

(06:06):
and fear.
They just did.

Think about this (06:09):
the peak the people in that crowd that Jesus
was talking to, inside thatcrowd were men, just like me and
you.
These dudes had duties, they hadpressures, they had
responsibilities, they hadpeople counting on them, they
had families, and Jesus met themright where they were.
Right where they were.
And his word is timeless, and itsheds, it stands right here as

(06:33):
truth today, where we need it.
And when I hear Matthew 6 now,when I start hearing those words
of Jesus, I hear him calling usaway from anxiety's default
posture, fearing the future.
Like that's where we justnaturally default.
We believe that by worrying, wecan somehow control what's to

(06:54):
come.
Isn't that crazy?
The way the mind works.
But Jesus invites us to admitthat we can't control the
future.
Are you kidding me?
Through fear or any other means.
What he calls us to is somethingpretty incredible.
He calls us to trust, simply totrust.
To trust that by faith, we'll beable to handle whatever comes in

(07:16):
our way.
And we'll be able to embracethat kind of faith.
We need when we actually do,we'll be freed from the worry
and be able to be fully presentright here and right now.
Now, when I say we're gonna wecan actually walk through the
things that come in our way,it's because of the strength we
have in Christ.
That's it.

(07:36):
So maybe right now, as you'relistening to this, fear is
creeping into your life bigtime.
I just want to say one thing toyou, bro.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I know it's heavy, and I know itcan be hard to talk about.
But don't miss this, brother.
Those emotions aren't wasted.

(07:58):
God doesn't give us thesefeelings without a purpose.
We got to start directing thosefeelings towards seeking Him and
trusting in His plan.
And then that can be tools forgrowth rather than weights of
burden.
You see what I'm saying?
And that's what we're gonna beexploring as we as we try to
think about how we can tradethis fear for faith and the

anxiety we have in our life withthe peace that passes all
understanding.
So maybe as we just for thisthis one section here was
Matthew, where are you trying tocontrol what only God can?
Just think about that for asecond.
Like, where are you reallytrying to be the guy who
controls what God truly is incharge of?

(08:46):

Then we're gonna keep digginginto this idea of I'm just a guy
with anxiety.

So now, second scripture we'regoing to look at is first Peter,
1 Peter 5.7.

Because we need to cast it allon him, right?
So that verse actually says,cast all your anxiety on him
because he cares for you.
Does it get any more clear?
That's why I love Peter, bro.
I just absolutely love Peter theway he writes and the way he
just just very applicable.
I got four kids, y'all.
Four of them.
I've heard out Else Elsa onFrozen belt out the words let it

(10:13):
go more times than I can count.
Like, and honestly, uh like thatsong, uh I'm not I'm not
anti-frozen, man.
When they throw on frozen, I'llsit down and watch it.
It's not terrible, right?
But the truth is, and I startthinking about the words of that
song, letting go has beenextremely hard for me.

(10:35):
Extremely hard for me.
That's why there's another moviethat's been recently that's
impacted my life.
I wanted to share with you.
Some of you guys probably haveseen it, most of you guys
probably have, but Top GunMaverick.
Man, that movie just stopped mecold, bro.
Because Maverick, think aboutit, he's haunted by the death of
his best friend Goose from thefirst movie, which was a great

(10:57):
movie, by the way.
And he carries a weight that hecan't shake, right?
And if you remember, so in thein the Maverick movie, Iceman is
now like the guy in charge,right?
And there's a tender momentwhere Iceman looks him in the
eye and he and he types a promptbecause Iceman can't talk, and
he says, uh, it's time to letgo.

(11:17):
And Maverick simply says fourwords back that just rock me on
my heels.
I don't know how.
And that line just hit me like afreight train because Tom Cruise
playing that role was able toput into words something that I
often feel but haven't found away to say.

(11:41):
And it's the reason why anxietyso often wins the battle in my
mind, because I don't know howto let it go.
I don't know how to let it go.
And that raw honesty forMaverick in that moment was real
familiar.
Because I I wrestled with fear,I wrestled with insurity, I

(12:02):
wrestled with the pressure toalways be in control.
But when I saw that character inthat moment lean into some
vulnerability, I was leaning intoo, to be honest.
Because I was curious to see howthe story would turn out.
And Maverick in that movie, ifyou've watched it, his the
breakthrough came through trust,through trusting his students,

(12:26):
through trusting the friend thathe had lost, the son of the
friend that he had lost rather,right?
Now, what does that mean for me?
Because I'm not in a Hollywoodscript.
This is real life, baby.
All right.
It's messy.
It just is.
But the trend, but the principleholds true, guys.
Transformation begins withsurrender.

(12:47):
Okay?
Transformation begins withsurrender.
And that's what Peter's callingus to right here.
He's calling us to cast all ouranxiety on God.
And that's a beautiful call, andit is a brutal call.
And it sounds simple, right?
Well, just give it to him,Chris.
But casting it, hold on.
Just listen to this.
Casting it means actuallyadmitting that we're carrying

(13:10):
it.
And that's stinking hard.
Because admitting fear orweakness or anxiety makes us
feel like failures as guys.
But bro, I'm telling you, I'mlearning this slowly.
If you want to be the man thatGod's calling you to be, you
have to be honest about whereyou are.

(13:31):
You just have to.
You have to stop pretending thatyou're fine.
And you gotta start namingwhat's weighing you down.
Because only then is when youcan start laying it at your
feet.
So this question is worthconsidering.
I'm telling you, bro, thisquestion is it's uh if you take

(13:52):
the time to wrestle with it,you'll be uh you may be
surprised what comes out.
What if admitting that we don'tknow how is actually the first
step of letting go?
Think about that.
What if knitting that we don'tknow how is actually the first
step of letting go?
Because Maverick doesn't give usa clear answer.

(14:14):
And I've been thinking about it.
Maverick has a certain image ofhimself and how he deals with
problems, and that that image isshaped by the culture and his
family and his background andother influences, right?
And I have a similar image ofmyself, also formed by my
culture and experiences thatshape me.

(14:37):
And if I reflect on those twomoments, the real challenge
isn't just letting go of thatimage.
The challenge is learning to letgo while fully accepting the guy
that I am.
Because if we truly believe thatGod cares for us, like his word
tells us he does, then castingour cares on him isn't a sign of

(14:59):
weakness.
It's a declaration that we trustyou, God.
And that's the difference,that's the reframe, right?
So cast your cares on him, castall your anxieties on him, means
you trust God enough to give itto him.
You see how that works?
And I don't know for you ifthat's if that's helpful or not,

(15:19):
but it's been super helpful forme.
And again, as I as I'm recordingthis, I'm sitting here with a
broken ankle.
I got surgery in two days.
I'm I'm in a pretty anxiousstate right now.
Yet I put all my anxiety on him.
I'm trying just to simply giveit all.
I trust you, Lord.
I trust the surgeons, thenurses, the doctor, all that.
I trust that, but all above allthat, I trust you.

(15:43):
Because you're a God ofmiracles.
And you're the God that I put mytrust in my hope.
I trusted you before I broke it.
I'm gonna trust you after Ibroke it, after it's healed,
period, throughout the storm.
So, what would it look like foryou today to cast that weight
onto him?
Like, what are you holding onto, bro?

(16:04):
What are you holding on to?
And that grip, that strong gripthat you have as a man on that
anxious idol, it's just holdingyou back.
My encouragement to you, let itgo.
That's where we find true peace.
And we're gonna talk about thatpeace when we come back from the

now we got to talk about findingsome peace in the storm out
there.
So in the and the gospel ofMark, the fourth chapter, we see
an account where he says he gotup and he rebuked the wind and

(17:52):
said to the waves, Quiet, bestill.
Then the wind died down and itwas completely calm.
He said to his disciples, Whyare you so afraid?
Do you still have no faith?
It's pretty important, likepretty massive scripture right
there, guys.
So when I when I was growing up,you know, just to kind of bring
this into a reframe, some of mygreatest memories were made with

(18:17):
my dad and my brother on ourfamily boat.
We had a couple different boats.
We lived in our lake there inVirginia, and and uh we didn't
live on the lake, but we livedclose to the lake.
If you lived in our town, youwere within a mile from the lake
wherever you live, pretty much.
And every trip to wherever wewere putting in the boat at,
either if we had it dockedsomewhere, if we were actually
just going to marina, uh, itjust felt like an adventure for

(18:39):
a kid, man, as a young boy.
I just remember that.
And some of the clearest uhreflections come not from when
everything went right, but man,I had some of those the best
memories where it didn't gowrong, where things went wrong,
the unexpected happened.
I remember one time we were outthere, and uh and when you're on
a lake, storms can just roll in.
They just can.

(18:59):
And it can turn a peaceful sceneinto very chaotic, very chaotic,
very quickly.
And uh I remember one day wewere we were out there and a
storm just came up on us reallyquickly.
I mean, really quickly, and itwas very it was a furious storm,
and and and we actually ended upgoing to a bridge and tying off
the boat to a bridge, to apillar there on the bridge, and

(19:22):
it was rough.
I mean, it was thunder, it waslightning, and uh uh but my fear
in that moment, and when I thinkabout it, it was not that high.
It was surprisingly low.
Uh, maybe it's because I wasjust a kid.
I didn't know any better.
I didn't know how dangerous asituation we actually were.
Uh for me, it felt more of alike a scene out of a pirate

(19:43):
movie or something, right?
I mean, it didn't feel like athreat.
Then I got to thinking aboutthat thing.
Maybe more likely, it wasbecause when I looked at my dad,
he wasn't rattled.
He wasn't scared, he was calm.

(20:04):
And because I trusted him, Iknew that I was gonna be okay.
And and look at think about thisthing, that wasn't a blind
trust.
No, that trust was built overtime and and and I made that
inference from seeing hischaracter laid lived out every

(20:25):
day.
Because from the moment Ientered the scene as his son, he
had been steadily providing,proving rather himself
trustworthy through his actions,through his words that he used
with me, and with his presence.
And that made me think aboutwhen it comes to God, why is it
so much harder for us to findthe same peace when we face the

(20:50):
storms of life today as a man?
And when you start thinkingabout that, man, it's harder for
me to fully put my trust in God.
And just say it saying that outloud is uncomfortable.
But it's also necessary becauseI can't be the only guy who
feels this way.

(21:11):
Many of us guys out here arebattling this insecurity.
We know that God is trustworthy,yet in the chaos of the world of
the life we live in, we are uhwe wrestle to fully rest in Him.
And there's just for me, when Iread the scriptures and the
disciples and the accounts ofJesus, there's hope in knowing

(21:35):
that even the disciples, guys,the dudes who travel with them
side by side with Jesus, theystruggle with trust.
And Mark, he shows us this.
He shows us and he reminds usthat the same men who had
witnessed miracle after miracleafter miracle still wrestled to
find deep abiding faith when thestorms hit them directly head

(21:57):
on.
And I don't know about you, butfor me, it's encouraging to
realize that struggling withanxiety and trust doesn't
disqualify us, guys.
It gives us an opportunity toreassess and reconnect with what
God, what we have alwaysrecognized to be true, which is
we are protected by God and Hehas a plan for us.

(22:19):
He loves us.
And that invites us to lean ineven closer to the one who
remains calm when our worldfeels out of control.
And I'm gonna tell you what, ifthe disciples needed reminders
of who Jesus is, then surely wedo, right?
And our goal can't be to haveperfect faith, fellas.

(22:40):
It can't be.
It has to be a persistent faith.
Just like my dad, persistentfaith.
Just like me trying to be a dad,just trying to be persistent
with my kids.
That faith that even when it'strembling, it can cling to my
savior who's just gonna tell me,be quiet, be still.
So if you're in a storm rightnow, if you're in that storm of

(23:02):
life, man, um I encourage you tojust cling to it.
And think about this too.
Where or who do youinstinctively place your trust
when the storms of life hit youright now?
It could be Christ.
My prayer is that it is.
Or there's bottles, there'swomen, there's drugs, there's

(23:27):
money, there's stuff, right?
I mean, I'm telling you, there'sthere's there's things that pull
us away.
We have to be super careful andintentional about that.

Hopefully this has beenencouraging to you.
So as we wrap this up, I wantyou to just consider how we can
walk in peace daily.
In Philippians, it tells us ittells us chapter four, do not be
anxious about anything, but inevery situation by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving,present your request to God, and
the peace of God that transcendsall understanding will guard

(24:53):
your hearts and your mind inChrist Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters,whatever is true, whatever is
noble, whatever is right,whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely, whatever is admirable,if anything is excellent or
praiseworthy, think about suchthings, and the God of peace
will be with you.
All right.
Now, how do we apply thatscripture?
Doing good.

(25:14):
Okay.
That was my default answer foryears.
Uh, when when somebody asked mehow I'm doing, okay?
It's just I'm I'm fine, I'mdoing good.
You know, it was easier to saythose two words than to actually
reveal what's going on inside ofme.
You know, I I really got good.
I'm still pretty doggone good atit, at hiding my feelings.

(25:35):
Because the last thing I want isfor someone to see a crack in my
armor, right?
And somewhere along the way, uh,I convinced myself that being a
man meant that I had to alwayshave it together, that my
finances had to be flawless, uh,my fitness needed to be a
top-notch, my family life had tobe something out of a stinking
Hallmark movie, right?

(25:56):
But that type of pressure willcrush you.
It definitely crushed me.
And it takes a toll on our mind,on our body, and our spirit, and
it can feel like a ticking timebomb, and we never know uh what
it is that's gonna finally setus off.
And after I walked through apretty painful divorce, uh I
knew some things had to change,guys.
And that journey has not beeneasy.

(26:19):
And when I met my wife, Godbless her, I love her, I
committed to building ourrelationship on truth.
And that was not natural for me.
Okay, okay, that's not.
Um it's still something Istruggle with.
She's my best friend, I love herto death.
Um, but the moments of tensionbetween us is almost certainly

(26:42):
usually when when they stem fromtimes of my reluctance to let
her in.
And because she can see throughme, that girl knows me, and she
knows when I'm faking it.
All I can say uh withouthesitation, the moments of the
greatest peace in my life havecome with her when everything's

(27:03):
on the table.
The good, bad, and ugly.
And there's something aboutverbalizing my worries and being
fully known by her that justdisarms them.
And pretty much every time Itell her this stuff, her on her
every time her response is, allright, let's pray.
Let's take, let's take it toGod.

(27:23):
And then you start thinkingabout these script these words
that Paul gives us inPhilippians, and it starts to
come in together.
I'm telling you, fellas, anxietyrobs us of peace.
And Phil White Robertson, Godrest him, used to say all the
time, peace of mind is therarest commodity on earth.
And that is a hard truth, butthat is a real truth.

(27:45):
And that leads us to thequestion is how do we actually
find this peace?
And what I found, guys, is thatpeace doesn't come from hiding
or pretending.
It doesn't come fromachievements or perfect
appearances, or does it comefrom uninvestigated or

Once we've got it out on thetable, peace comes from that
full submission, layingeverything at the foot of
Christ.
Purity.
This is our doubts, our fears,and our anxieties.
And we do all that, the HolySpirit starts to show up and He
does powerful work within us intransformative ways.

And the peace that passes onunderstanding is not just
something that goes on astinking coffee mug, it becomes
our reality because it's onlyfound in that deep personal
relationship with Christ.
You see what I'm saying?
So if you've been uh listeningto this and you're battling
anxiety, I just want you to knowyou're not alone, you're not

(28:51):
weak, there's nothing to beashamed of.
You're not meant to carry thisburden by yourself.
And there is perfect peacethat's available.
It is.
But it starts with honesty,prayer, and surrender.
So we gotta put the mask down.
We gotta talk to the people thatactually care about us and love
us, and we also, mostimportantly, we need to talk to

(29:12):
the one who already knows you.
God.
That's how we let the peace ofGod guard guard our heart and
mind each and every day.
So right now, the question maybeyou want to ask is who knows
your thoughts?
And who knows what kind of whatyou're struggling with the most?
And and really the question ofthe week we've talked about all

(29:35):
week is what kind of thoughtsare you feeding the most right
now?
And I'm telling you, buddy, whenyou start really wrestling with
that and thinking through how toredirect that, that's when
things start shifting.
So I don't know if this has beenencouraging to you.
My hope is that it was.
You know, if you're a guy andyou're just wrestling with some
anxiety, uh, you're not alone,brother.
