SPEAKER_00 (01:43):
Welcome to The Lion Within Us, a podcast serving
Christian men who are hungry tobe the leaders, God intends you
to be.
I'm your host, Chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, fellas, it's funFriday time.
Let's get right into it.
Okay.
So the scripture of the weekthis week is in the book of 1
Timothy, the fourth chapter, theeighth verse.
For physical training is of somevalue, but godliness has value
for all things, holding promisefor both the present life and

(02:05):
the life to come.
Okay.
So, guys, we had a really goodtime unpacking that verse in our
spiritual kickoff episode again, all about simplifying and
applying God's word.
So go back to in your podcastfeed if you haven't listened to
it yet.
Check that out because I reallytry to give you some good
insights there.
And then the last podcast in thefeed you should see is from our
friend Mark Oxer talking aboutthis is the way.

(02:27):
And he really practicallyunpacked a lot of things around
discipleship, but more from acoaching standpoint.
I really liked how he tied inthe coaching element, the way,
because this is just sorelatable for guys.
Like, you know, if you want toget stronger uh in the gym, you
you go to the ones who have beenthere, done that, and then they
can show you where you're at.
They can assess where you areright now, then they can start

(02:48):
prescribing for you, you know, the types of workouts, the types
of motions, the types of moves, the types of weights that are
not going to get you hurt, butbut they are going to push you.
And I thought it was superinteresting.
He's like, you know, when wework out, when we when we train
our bodies, going to failure isnot is natural.
That's part of the process.
You know, you want to you wantto push, I mean, some exercises

(03:11):
literally, you want to push yourbody to the point of failure so
that that's where you build thestrength.
When it comes to discipleship, that's just not the way it's
often talked about.
You know, we don't want to pushpeople outside their comfort
zone because we don't want themto keep coming back.
But at the end of the day, that's not discipleship.
Jesus was constantly pushing hisdisciples, he was constantly

(03:31):
challenging them and showingthem new ways and new things to
consider.
And that is what it's like to bea truly surrendered, all
bought-in disciple of theLordship of Jesus Christ.
So he really had a great somegreat frameworks there.
I just thought it was really uh,really just a good conversation
about not being accidental, butwe have to be super intentional.
So hopefully enjoy that one.

(03:51):
Again, he's from theNetherlands, just really has a
great, great story andbackground.
I thought the the the game thathe played, I mean, he's the
number five in the world withthat game.
So uh don't mess with him onthat one, okay, fellas.
All right.
So let's get into our funFriday.
What we always try to do on theLion Within us each and every
week is we try to give you threeareas to consider our our

(04:12):
pillars for the lion, if youwill, health, wealth, and self.
Okay, so that health, we breakit down into two sections.
How do we build strong bodies, but more just as important
rather, strong minds, right?
Got to have that mind and thatbody.
Wealth is how do we stewardbetter finances and our careers?
They they go hand in hand, oneleads to the other.

(04:34):
Self is okay, from from for meas an individual man, how do I
grow as a father and a husband?
Okay, if you're not a father,it's okay.
Maybe that's that's come that'sdown your path, maybe those
years are behind you, whateverit may be.
But as a husband, right?
What what does what does thislook like for how can I serve my
wife better?
So these are some tips toconsider, fellas, as we get this

(04:56):
thing moving.
And again, I'm trying to keep uhthe the theme of coaching in
with this week.
So the health tip, particularlyfor you guys who are getting
started, maybe it's been youknow a few presidents since
you've seen it inside of thegym.
It's okay.
Ease up.
Don't don't don't worry.
Start with body weight.
You can't you can't go wrongwith bodyweight training,

(05:18):
telling you.
Uh if you don't know where tostart, this is where it's where
it's at.
And I'm talking just the basicmovements, push-ups, squats,
planks, lunges.
Hey, if you can work yourself upto a pull-up, they're great.
They're foundational, they'renot flashy, but they build
strength, they build stability, they work on your core, right?

(05:39):
They help you build endurance.
And here's the beauty about allthis stuff, fellas.
You don't have to go to Rogue orsome fitness company to buy this
stuff.
You can do this stuff right now.
Zero investment.
You don't have to have a gymmembership.
And the cool part is these bodyworkouts, they're scalable,
right?
You can make them easier, youcan make them harder depending

(06:00):
on your ability, right?
You can adjust your hands on,for instance, on your push-ups,
all this, these types of things.
You can you can make thesedifferent um minor adjustments
with squats, taking your feetout wide or bringing them close
together, wall squats.
There's all sorts of differentways to do this.
But the big thing is they helpyou prevent injuries because
these body workouts, what theyreally are doing, they're

(06:24):
strengthening your core andthey're helping you to be ready
to improve mobility.
And if you start here, particularly as a guy, you can
start developing this thediscipline of consistency.
And Mark and I talked about thisa lot over and over and over,
like you'll go to the gym everyday.
Like you want to be able to putthat rhythm in.
Because it's not about goinginto the gym and lifting some

(06:44):
heavy weight on day one andgetting hurt, and then you won't
come back for another couplepresidents.
No, it's about showing up, doingthe work, and stewarding our
bodies well so we can serve God.
We want to be able to serve Himand all that we can do.
That means we have to take careof these vessels he's given us.
And if you don't know where tostart, I totally get it.
But the body weight stuff, I'mtelling you, lean into that.

(07:05):
Just start with just with abasic air squats, then start
with a couple lunges, and thenmove to a push-up or two.
And if you can't do a full-blownpush-up right now, just use your
knees, okay?
Just get the motion going, andthen you'll, as you do that, as
you get those reps, the strengthwill go up, and then you'll be
able to improve your form, okay?

(07:26):
All right.
Wealth tip.
Very simple, guys.
Get good at financial math,right?
You can you cannot lead yourhousehold or steward our
resources well if we don't knowour numbers.
We have to know our numbers.
Uh and it's just bottom line.
So we need to talk aboutbudgets, need to understand your
interest rates, you need youneed to know uh debt to income.

(07:48):
What does that look like?
You need to know about returns.
All these things matter.
We can't just bury our head inthe sand and just plead
ignorant.
It's not an excuse.
You are called, if you'rehearing me, you are called to be
the financial steward of yourhome.
And this requires wisdom.
This requires diligence.
This requires humility to askothers for help when you don't

(08:09):
know it, right?
You have to be getting, wereally should be striving to get
comfortable with this math,right?
And I'm not saying you gotta bea doggone CPA.
I'm not a CPA, but it does meanyou better know how much money
is coming in each month and howmuch money's going out each
month, and you better know howto make those wise decisions
with what God has given you.
And I'm telling you, this is alot of it, you just have to
surrender the ownership mindsetand flip it to a stewardship

(08:33):
mindset.
But the clearer you can get yourfinancial picture, the more
intentional you can be aroundgenerosity, around saving,
around you know, investing, allthe stuff that matters.
But saying I'm not good at mathis not an excuse.
And I'm telling you, I'm donewith that.
Like, no.
You don't have to be uh again aCPA, but you do need to be your

(08:56):
responsible for understandingyour individual numbers.
All right.
For yourself tip, fellas, trainyour children in these finances.
I'm gonna just keep pulling thisthread a little bit, just
coaching our kids.
Schools very rarely teach yourkids how to handle money, right?
That that lies on us.
I mean, 100%.
So if we're gonna uh be able toteach our children about

(09:20):
budgeting, about saving, aboutgiving, about investing, you're
equipping them with tools thatthey'll be able to use for life.
And more importantly, you'reshaping their values because
you're teaching them that moneyis not a tool, it's not a
master, but we're called asteward that.
And this has to be ageappropriate, guys, right?
I mean, you with your youngkids, you start with simple

(09:40):
chores, and as they get older, you give you you increase the
level of complexity.
The same thing goes with here, right?
So maybe with with small kids, just talk tick, just help them
understand what a savingsaccount is.
That's it.
Why do we need to save ourmoney, right?
And with as they get older, maybe you start to teach them
how do you track expenses andand how do you walk through car

(10:02):
payments or or or savings forcollege, whatever, whatever
works.
And look, guys, I got an ebookthat's out there uh on this very
subject.
And and full disclosure, this isan area of weakness for our
family.
And I recognize, I'm like, geez,Louise, my my older daughters
are struggling withunderstanding stewardship.
And I forgot.
I actually wrote a doggone bookfor it.

(10:25):
So it's an ebook.
I can email it to you.
So if you need some resourcesand you think something like
this would help you just tonavigate the conversation,
please email me.
Okay, shoot me an email, Chrisat the lionwithan.us.
I will be gladly, I will sendyou a link.
I think I can just send you,yeah, a link.
I'll either send you the PDF ora link.
I think I have to send you alink, but I'll send you to you.

(10:47):
It's free.
We just want to put this in yourhands.
So, guys, if you if you needhelp with financial one-on-one
conversation, look, this couldbe good just for you in general.
But if you want to haveconversations with your kids,
send me a note.
I'd be glad to send you a copyof that ebook, okay?
All right, fellas.
So that's the three tips thisweek.
Start that body, uh, start thattraining with training regimen

(11:09):
with body weight.
Uh, is your is your health tip.
The well tip is get good at thatfinancial math, and that
self-tip is start training yourchildren in finances, okay?
So, book of the week this week, guys, is the one from our friend
Mark uh Mark Oxer.
This is the way following Christin a culture of confusion.
Cool part about this book, too.

(11:29):
He has a little eight-part uhBible study review at the end.
Well, actually, I think it'snine weeks, so it but it breaks
it down for so you can actuallyhave a conversation with others
and work through the book as agroup.
So if you have a little smallgroup of guys and you don't want
to commit to any anything that'slike a year long or two years
long, hey, this is a littlenine-session guide right here

(11:52):
that I guarantee you will helpyou uh in your discipleship
journey, okay?
All right, let's get to our dadjokes, fellas.
Dad joke number one.
What do you get if you cross atree and a dog?
So cross a tree and a dog, whatdo you get?
Well, you get bark.
That's what you get, fellas, because you should know that
one.
All right.
Number two, what happens when afrog's car breaks down?

(12:13):
So you got a frog driving a carand it breaks down.
What is it to do in that moment?
Of course, it's supposed to gettowed.
All right.
Do you get it, fellas?
All right, so that both of themare terrible this week.
I totally get it.
But look, this the whole pointis an eye, roll or size.
So dad joke number one is whatdo you get when you cross the
tree and a dog?
That's a bark.
Number two, what happens when afrog's car breaks down?
It gets towed, fellas.

(12:34):
So let me know which one youlike best.
And again, if you have a dadjoke you want us to use, send
those over to support at thelinewithin.us, okay.
We'd love to get those at thatemail.
Okay.
All right, fellas.
So the question of the week thisweek is how much time do you
give daily to spiritualtraining?
Again, we talk a lot aboutstrengthening our bodies and all
this stuff.
But what are we doing to trulygrow as disciples of Christ?

(12:56):
That's on us, fellas.
We have to be intense, superintentional there, okay?
So hopefully the things wetalked about this week are
encouraging you along the waythere.
Thelionwithin.us is where you'llfind all our resources, guys,
all the ways we try to help, allthe ways we try to serve you and
your walk with Christ.

The things that are happening onthe Bible app, we're just we're
really leaning in hard becausewe see that's just a great
opportunity to shareencouragement with others, to
share uh just some thoughts andsome ideas.
And the cool part is you cantake those Bible reading plans

(13:40):
that we put together to LionWithin Us.
You can have them with yoursmall group, like your little
men's group that you got goingright now, when you guys meet on
a Saturday morning or a Tuesdaymorning or a Wednesday evening,
whatever that works, use some ofthe Lion resources just to help

questions together, fellas.
I'm telling you, it's a greatway to connect and move there,
okay?

(15:02):
And remember, just keep onleashing the lion within.
Trying to find genuine resourcesto help grow spiritually can
feel overwhelming.
At least it was for me.
For the longest time, thesupport that I was looking for
didn't exist.
And I knew I wasn't alone.
And at the same time, God wasleading me to take action.

(15:25):
That's why we built the LionWithin Us Community, which is
simply a place for Christian mento grow together in an honest,
practical way that's alwaysrooted in God's Word.
