Tired all the time? Can’t get out of bed in the morning? In a perpetual bad mood? Maybe you have a B12 deficiency that could be the reason why the bed seems so inviting or why you got out on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Did you know that digestive issues could be causing a problem with your ability to assimilate B12?

People who have had surgery on the stomach or upper intestinal area may not be able to produce the intrisic factor required to get the B12 from food. The elderly are also apt to be deficient as aging makes less intrisic factor and therefor less B12 that ends up where it needs to be, in the cells. To much folic acid can hide a B12 deficiency and best not to guess, but test your levels.

Do you trust the doctor? Do you trust your spouse? What about yourself? I learned some very important lessons about trust when faced when rising from the ashes after my “Bust a Gut” experience. The long road to recovery required me to trust my husband to take care of me, trust in God to give me the courage to not give up and give in, and myself to keep fighting for my life. I had so many obstacles to overcome and I had to have the faith that tomorrow would be better. I looked forward to the day that this nightmare would be a dim memory in time. I can now look back and realize the test God was putting me through. He was preparing me to help you through your hard times too. To have empathy for others and understanding that sometimes you just have to trust.

B12 (Cobalamin)

There are different versions of B12 and understanding your methylation status is important for those who receive B12 supplements in oral, sublingual or injectable form. The B12 usually kept in conventional doctors clinics and in hospitals is cynacobalamin and requires methyl groups in the body in order to deal with the cyanide when the body breaks down the this form of B12. Most everyone should be fine taking hydroxycobalamin which is fine for undermethylators and overmethylators. Methylcobalamin is the best form for a undermethylator but this form must be compounded immediately before administering due to it’s fragile molecular structure. Light destroys this form very easily. Overmethylating persons do not need the methyl form of B12, due to the extra methyl groups they already have too many of, therfore the hydroxycobalamin is a good alternative.

Did you know calcium is necessary for proper digestion and assimilation of B12? An important cofactor is B2. Necessary to have adequate levels of B2 before your body can properly handle B12. The main driver of the methylation biochemical process is B2, kind of like the key to get the engine going.

How does autoimmunity cause B12? Glad you asked.
