Tom Godwin was born in Maryland back in 1915, and life wasn’t exactly easy for him early on—he left school after the third grade. But he had a wild imagination and a passion for stories, which eventually led him to the world of science fiction in the 1950s. 

He didn’t write a ton, but the stories he did publish really stuck—most famously The Cold Equations, a tale that’s still sparking debates today. Godwin had a way of throwing ordinary people into extraordinary, no-win situations, and that’s what made his work unforgettable.
