Speaker 1 (00:05):
You are listening to The Manning Show with You and Manning.
You're number one sports podcast starts now. The Edmonton Oilers
find a way to get the job done yesterday against
the Vancouver Canucks. I know it's been a while since

(00:28):
we've last don one, since I've last done one, but
because I've just been so busy with some other stuff
going on in my life. But now I think, because
it's playoffs and the Oilers put up a big win yesterday,
We're going to have to stick with doing it because
it's been It's a lot of fun doing it. It's

(00:50):
just sometimes hard to do it all the time every week.
But nevertheless, a big win for the Edmonton Oilers last night,
taking down the Canucks by a score of three of
the two. Evan Bouchard the hero in the game, his
second hero go goal of this series, obviously scoring the

(01:13):
first one in overtime against the Vancouver Canucks. But wow,
what a series it has been. I thought it was
a great, great, great game by the Edmonton Oilers. They
outplayed the Vancouver Canucks quite a bit. I thought they
really outplayed them. The Canucks obviously with some pushes back

(01:34):
like they did in the Nashville series. I thought they
played quite well, the Oilers, indeed. But we'll get to
Evan Bouchard in a second. The talk of the game
was Calvin Pickard getting the start. So that's what we're
gonna start. Calvin Pickard, the guy thirty two years old

(01:58):
with his first playoff start as any goaltender. Obviously, he
was known to be an AHL goaltender this year getting
the nod because Jack Campbell's been so poor, but then
yesterday he played really solid. I thought Skinner, like I've

(02:19):
said all season, is terrible. He's not a good goaltender.
He's not a great goaltender, and I think this series
has really proved it. I think if Skinner has been
would be playing better, we wouldn't be in this situation.
We would probably be up in the series at least
three to one. I think if we get some more saves,

(02:40):
we'd be up in the series three to one. And
that's what I truly believe. And I think finally we
get some saves. Pickard made a couple saves. I think
he could have had a shutout if it wasn't for
those bad balances that he got. We can look at
the goals but bad bounces. The first goal, I mean

(03:03):
Garland just throwing it off, putting it on net, and
you could see it in the video. Skinner, I mean
not Skinner Pickard had the puck tracked, but then it
hit Nurses like side of a knee pad. I don't
really know what the heck he was doing screening the
goalie and that goes top shelf. I think Skinner saves that,
I mean not Skinner. Pickard saves that if that wasn't

(03:29):
if Nurse wasn't there, And really I think he played
really well. And then the second goal was just throwing
it on net in a lucky state escape by Joshua
to put that one in the back of the net
in the dying seconds. In the moment, I was like,

(03:49):
oh crap, this game, this series might be over because
he was going overtime down in the dumps. And then
Boosche scores a big goal. Obviously, lots of debate on
the high stick, which we'll get into that, but just
a huge goal by Evan Bouchard. He's been excellent the series. Obviously,

(04:11):
the scoring has been huge because the Oilers have really
struggled to have their secondary depth scoring. But we get
some goals from Matis at home and Evan Bouchard. This
series kind of makes up for that a little bit.
And I think he's been really good. Obviously not the
greatest defensive defenseman, but if he's gonna score goals like that,

(04:34):
just beat see love and boom. We're going to the
Game five in Vancouver on Thursday night tied to two
instead of being down three to one. And that was
probably the biggest goal of the season, if we're gonna
put it like that, it was the biggest goal of
the season because three to one and two two is
so much different. Three to one. It's probably series over

(04:57):
you have to win three straight, two to two, it's
the best of three. It's a whole different ball game.
It's like a new series. And just to you know,
give us the shot at that, you know, feeling good
about it. It's just great. It's great overall. And Boush

(05:17):
got it done in the big moments, and he's done
that a couple of times. He scored a lot of
overtime goals, a couple of big goals like that. But
I mean, Vancouver goes and scores and we're like, oh no,
not like Nashville. Series and then boom. A minute later,
we see Boosche get on the board and just beats

(05:39):
beats the goaltender short side. Not really a lot of
traffic in front, but you know, beats them clean. Vancouver
had their bounces this game. They got a lot of
pucks to bounce in their favor. The Oilers didn't get that.
I thought the Oilers had a lot of big chances.
Obviously you saw Caine in front of the net, had
a big chance. Zc had a big chance on the

(06:02):
two on one. Not to mention, there's a bunch of
other big chances, a lot of chances on the power play.
See Loman. Not a lot of nice saves. I don't
even know how to say his last name correctly, but
he's been solid this series, and I think overall it's
a huge win for the others, just pushing forward kind

(06:25):
of into this last last three games of this series.
Big win in general for them. We'll get to the
high stick here because at the end of the game
we saw a little bit dry knock the puck down.
I think initially I thought they were gonna blow it
down right off the right, off the drop, and they didn't.

(06:47):
They didn't blow it down for some reason, which went
in our favor. The Rats haven't been great either side
this entire series. I'm going to be honest, but I
didn't think at one point in that game that the
Canucks deserved to win. I didn't think there was not
one point where I was like, Oh, the Canucks, they're

(07:07):
playing really well. They deserve to win this game because
the Oilers just had so many more chances and the
goals that the Canucks scored were bounced. All these Canucks
fans complaining about the high stick, it was the Oilers
game to win. They deserve to win this game. They
all played the Canucks and we finally get a couple
saves and that's the difference, right, So overall, I don't

(07:35):
I mean, at the time, I thought they were blown
it down, But looking back, obviously you can't challenge that play.
It's NHL reviewable. I'm kind of surprised they didn't review it.
But I didn't think there was enough evidence to overturn
that that was a high stick because it was really close.
Maybe the puck was a little higher than his shoulders
or shoulder line, but the way the stick has blocked

(07:58):
it on the one side it's hard to really tell
when the pocket and the stick make contact because it
doesn't matter if the sticks over the shoulders. It's where
the pocket and the stick make contact. I mean, it
was tight. It's tight to see on that one angle
that sports that showed us, but I didn't think that

(08:19):
there was enough evidence to really overturn that even if
they did go to review. So the others getting lucky
maybe not getting that one blown down, and that's huge.
That's just huge in general, and very very happy with

(08:39):
the way it ended up being. It was a very
close game all the way up up until the end,
but that one was tight. It was tight game, and
I don't like the weather's giving up leads. The only
thing I'm worried about is the Oilers haven't had a
solid lead and held it, so their wins have been

(09:01):
in overtime and Game one they choked the lead and lost.
That's the problem, and it's just it's really painful to
just see. You know, they gotta eventually lock down a
lead against Vancouver because Dallas tonight in Colorado. You know
Dallas is gonna be choking leads like that. Maybe against

(09:22):
the Oilers they are, but nice to see Colorado kind
of on the ropes. I mean, I don't know. I
think I'd rather play Dallas over Colorado if I'm gonna
be honest. Actually, well, right now, because Natchushkin answered the
Player Program, I might rather see uh Colorado, na Chuscin
If you don't know, he entered stage three of the

(09:43):
player Program, which is not good because he is the
leading score and he's been dealing with some off ie
issues for this season. But he has the most goals
for the Abs, and clearly he's got some other stuff
that's not too good for the Avs, and now they're
on the ropes, down three to one in the series

(10:05):
after taking game one. So yeah, I think it's overall
big win for the Wheelers and it's gonna be some
interesting games up here, like the Canes are coming back
in the series as well against the Rangers. I really
do think the Rangers are going to get get it done.
But huge win for the Wheelers, and I'll keep emphasizing

(10:29):
how big it is. It's they just got to keep
finding ways to win games and hopefully they can win
one straight and get some more bounces because Vancouver really
got it now. Looking on the Vancouver side, Rick Talkin
was not very happy with the way they played yesterday.
He said seven of five people are passengers. That was

(10:50):
a quote, and I didn't like. I don't they're a
one and a half line team like this is what
Tyler said on Oil Nation every day today. They're one
and a half line team. I didn't think their their
bottom two lines are doing much scoring. I know the
Oilers aren't much better, but the Oiler's power plays rocking.

(11:12):
The Canucks power play is struggling right now. It's fluffling,
and they were talking about it was a huge media
piece how they got to get the power play going.
The penalty kill, you gotta give him credit. They've been really,
really good making some smart plays. Obviously, Connor Brown back
in the lineup because Henrique has been injured, so he's
been good on the on the penalty kill. Derek Ryan's
been really solid on the penalty kill, and the penalty

(11:33):
kill has been really good. Just not giving them a lot.
But I think part of the problem is that Elias
Peterson is doing nothing. If you would have told me
that Elias Patterson would would have been playing last night,
I wouldn't have believed you, not knowing who he was

(11:55):
because I don't even notice him. If you told me
number forty was out and I didn't know who Petterson was,
I've been like, I don't see number forty out there
because he wasn't doing anything. He wasn't up to anything.
He hasn't been doing anything all playoffs and kind of
at the end of the season as well, and they
just signed him to a massive extension. He's gonna make

(12:17):
eleven point six million dollars next year. You can't have
guys fluffle like that, like the oilers McDavid and dry.
Their playoff games go up, and when you have guys
the playoff games go down, they don't play as well
in the playoffs. Can't do anything about that. I mean,
it's not a good contract if he's gonna look like that.

(12:39):
He just looks really scared, and you know, whenever it's
the puck, he's moving it off and he doesn't look
like a confident Petterson. I don't know if he's dealing
with an injury that's kind of affecting his way. But
you gotta have guys that are gonna have some grit
and you know, do a little better than what he's
been doing. Because he's looked really really bad in this playoffs, especially,

(13:06):
I do want to get to one of the moments.
I mean, Brock Besser another assist. He's been lighting the
Oilers on fire. He's an Oilers killer, getting the assist
last night when he just threw it on net and
got the kick from Joshua to type the game at
two at the end of the game. But he's been
really good against the Oilers and he's kind of been

(13:29):
the talking point for the Canucks. I mean that line
jt him is really good and it looks really good.
They're trying to shut down McDavid. They've done a pretty
good job at it. Actually McDavid hasn't had as many
points as he would like. But this guy on the

(13:51):
other side of the ice, Leon Drafts Edle, who is
absolutely dominating the Canucks right now. I mean, the power
play is absolutely rolling for the Oilers and Dryzheedle has
been a huge factor. He's scored a goal in three
out of the four games this series and right now

(14:11):
is just absolutely rolling. He's got seven points in four games,
which is really really good. And against the Kings he
was old and he was really good as well. But yeah,
it was a big game for these guys, and the

(14:31):
big players has been scoring a lot. We just need
some more depth scoring, and I think this series is wrapped.
If we get some saves in depth scoring. This series
is over. The connection a chance, and this is the problem.
There's no team that can can stop mcgavid and Dry.
I knew this Dry. They've kind of slowed McDavid down.
I'll give them their credit, but they're not going to
stop both of them. And the Oilers have done a

(14:54):
great job that Oilers power play, great job at slow
down kind of those bottom lines. I think they've done
really good defensively. Obviously, they've made a lot of mistakes.
They've had a lot of unlucky bounces. This playoffs officiating
hasn't been great, but they're gonna get those bounces if
they keep playing well, and time will show if they

(15:16):
can get some good goaltending. I think there's no issue
why they can't go play the Dallastars. But that's a
different issue. If we do end up winning this series,
we're going to any depth scoring against the Dallastars. It's just
how it is. But that's a time we'll talk about
when we reach there. If we can reach there, because
the Canucks are very well still in this series, and

(15:36):
they still look quite good. They almost play the Oilers
pretty hard. They look very very good. They look like
a very good team. So well, it's just got to
find a way. They got to get out of this
round and then you're looking looking pretty good. I mean,
you got to find a way to beat the Stars,
which would be very tough, or the Avs if the
Abs come back. But I'm trying not get too far

(15:59):
ahead of myself because you kind of think ahead as
a fan and you're getting excited, but you never know.
You never know what's gonna happen. So Oilers looking to
try and take that game on Thursday. I do wanna
give some love to Nudge. He scored a five on

(16:20):
five goal instead of passing across to McDavid. It was
a smart play by Mattias at Coom to just hit
it up. Myers absolutely rocked him, but he put his
body on the line for the puck to go forward
and Nudge he gave him the goal. The defenseman gave
him the shot, so he took it, and I think
that was a very very smart play buy at Coom

(16:44):
to get it up to nuge and nudge, just burying
it when we need him too, because he's kind of
the weak link on the power play. I know a
lot of people discredit him. He's good on the penalty kill.
He does a lot of everything, and I think that
was a huge goal. You could see the excitement in
McDavid's face. He turned around and was just very happy.
So is Dalan Holloway, and they looked it was a big, big,

(17:10):
big goal. But going to Dylan Holloway, he's looked really
good as well. He's been great. He actually makes stuff happen.
He moves the puck around. I think he's now an
NHL player. This is not a question. He's not going
up and down Dyalan Holloway looks really good and he
makes stuff happen, and I like how he's been doing.

(17:36):
I'm really happy. I think you leave him up there
with that, with that line of dry and cane. It
looks really good. You got to keep that that going
and it'll hopefully open up some of the bottom lines.
There's some guys that still want to see more from Warren.
Fogel has been a ghost as well. I think he's
been as good as Petterson's been. I'm gonna be honest.
I know he's pretty good on the physical side, but

(18:00):
I could like to see some more out of him.
I would like to see goal. Gotta get a goal eventually,
one of these guys like McLeod, same with him. I
know he's good defensively, good physical side. Let's try and score.
Let's try and get one for the team. The fourth
lines looked pretty good for the Weathers. I'm not gonna
complain about them. But the guy I want to see
more from especially is Corey Perry. Game one against the Kings,

(18:21):
he looked so good. He looked so calm, compoised. He
made a lot of good plays. He's very smart with
the puck, but he just hasn't looked the same since that.
He's really struggled to generate some offense. And one of
these days we got to see him put a pucket
in the net. I mean, it's Corey Perry only playing

(18:43):
nine minutes last night, but you know it was I'd
like to see him do more. I'm just gonna be
completely honest. Speaking a time on the ice though, they
mixed up the deep parents yesterday, which I thought looked
pretty good until the end Vinnie Deharnay third in ice time,

(19:03):
played more ice time than Darnell Nurse. I know he
Vinnie got stuck on form that one long shift, but
he looked pretty good. Vinnie's made a lot of smart plays.
I know he was minus two on the night, but
Vinnie looks really good and he hasn't made any plays
where I'm like, that's been defensively a defensive problem, unlike

(19:24):
Cody Ceci who has. And I think looking back, we're
gonna be like, oh, maybe if we don't win this series,
it's gonna be like, oh, Chris Tanner would have been nice,
or goaltender would have been nice. But Vinnie's looked really
good for where he was drafted. I mean, he's a
seventh round pick, right, so this is a good pick
by the Edmonton Oilers, and he's been really, really good,

(19:46):
and I'm very happy with the way he's been playing.
He's good on the penalty kill especially, really excited for
the way that he's been playing. Hopefully he can continue
that way. Hopefully we can get some better playing time.
Better playing by Nurse and CC. But I don't want

(20:08):
to beat up on them too much because we did
just win that game I score three to two, the
ms Snoilers taking down the Vancouver Canucks. Really good in general.
But yeah, I mean, I'm not gonna get into the
Blue Jays today or maybe some NBA later this week,

(20:30):
but I really liked the way he was playing and
I kind of just want to leave it at that
for today. Oilers, big win. Obviously. The next game is
tomorrow night, which today is a Wednesday. Tomorrow is a
Thursday against the against the Vancouver Canucks in Rogers Arena
for eight o'clock Mountain time. The Hurricanes and the Rangers

(20:55):
also tomorrow night at five pm Mountain time, and then
tonight the Stars and the Abs at six pm. The
Stars looking to wrap up that series, trying to get
that that W and move on to the Western Conference Finals,
maybe against ur Edminson. Oilers. We'll see, but yeah, I

(21:15):
can pretty much wrap it up for today. Hopefully we
can get a guest soon Connor Halley, maybe we want
to come on. Just overall really good so he's a
really nice guy. Hoping we can get him on sometime soon.
But yeah, this was a fun one coming in and
just talk about the Oilers a little bit, and we're
gonna leave it. Hopefully I can find a way, the

(21:39):
stars can find a way now I'm kidding. Hopefully the
Aps can find a way to win tonight, and we'll
probably do one sometime soon. So we will see you
then enjoy the rest of the games. Thanks for listening
