Hey, cody here, and
the title of this video is how
God destroyed the giants in mymarriage.
So I'm guessing if you're herewatching this video right now,
you've got a few giants in yourmarriage that you need to do
battle with, and if that's you, you're absolutely in the right
place.
Hey, my name is Cody Butler andI'm the founder of Better
Marriage, and the reason I helppeople with their marriages
these days is because it was anarea that I really struggled
(00:21):
with so much for so long.
Relationships was absolutelynot my strong suit and there
were many, many giants in mymarriage.
The main giant for me wasalcohol and how to overcome
alcohol.
It was a giant, but for you itmight be something else.
It might be finances, it mightbe porn, it might be sexual
addiction, it might be adulteryand affairs something like that.
(00:42):
It doesn't matter.
There are going to be giantsthat seem like they are in
defeatable undefeatable withinyour marriage.
But I'm here to tell you godcan and will and wants to defeat
those giants, and I'm going toshare with you today.
So the first thing tounderstand really is, when you
see giants in your marriage, notto despair.
This was one of the things thatreally kept me going throughout
(01:03):
all of the darkest days wasthat when God gave the promised
land to the children of Israel,he promised them a land flowing
with milk and honey.
And when the spies went intothe land 12 spies went into the
land 10 of them came back andsaid there are giants in the
land.
There are giants in the land.
Now here's the first thing totake.
(01:24):
If there are giants in the land, here's the first thing to take
.
If there are giants in the land, it means you in the right
place.
The promised land had giants init.
The land flow with milk andhoney.
Had John's in it.
Now your marriage, the dreammarriage, my dream marriage was
a land flowing with milk andhoney.
God promised me a land flowingwith milk and her honey, but
when I actually showed up andlooked into the land of marriage
(01:45):
, I could see that it was fullof giants.
Now here's the thing when yousee giants in your marriage,
rejoice and give praise, becauseit means that you are looking
in the right place.
It means you are looking at thepromised land.
If you are looking at amarriage and it is without
problems, it is withoutchallenges, then it's because
you're not looking at thepromised land.
You are not looking at themarriage God has given you.
(02:07):
God has given you a promisedland and the biblical example is
there are giants in those land.
Now, if you remember, there were12 spies went to spy out, went
to check out the promised land,10 plus Caleb and Jacob.
Now the 10 came back and gave areport.
If there are giants in the land, it's too big, they're too big,
we can't do this, we can'tdefeat them.
(02:29):
There were two that came backand said there are giants in the
land, but we can do this, wecan take this land, and that was
Joshua and Caleb.
Now think back, think in yourlife, how many kids are named
after the 10 spies that saidthere were giants in the land
and we can't do this?
Can you name any of those 10?
Now, those 10 are named in theBible, but only two came back
with a positive report saying, even though there are giants, we
(02:50):
can do this, we can take thisland, and they're probably two
of the most popular names in theworld, at least the Western
world right now.
The other 10 names have beenforgotten to history, even
though they're recorded.
They've been predominantlyforgotten by history.
How many of those 10 people canyou name?
So history forgets and this isthe archetype, right?
This is what we take from thestory.
History forgets those who lookat the promised land that god
(03:13):
has given and sees giants, andsees a land that is untakable, a
land that cannot be tamed, aland that cannot be moved into.
The two that came back with thepositive rapport.
History has recorded their nameand many, many, many, many,
many, many people have beennamed after those two.
Now, that's the first thing thatI did was I decided that I was
(03:34):
going to be a joshua.
I decided that I was going tobe a caleb within my marriage
and look at the promised land.
God gave me this marriage, butit wasn't without problems that
I was determined that I wasgoing to look at that marriage
and I was going to see the landflowing with milk and honey and
I was not going to allow thegiants that were in that land.
Now we're talking aboutmarriage here, but maybe any
(03:54):
aspect of your life, when yousee giants in any aspect of your
life could be your finances, could be your health, could be
your relationship with yourchildren, could be your
children's health.
Again, don't despair if you areseeing giants in the land.
It means that you're in theright place.
It means you are looking at thepromised land god has given you
.
God did not give his people aland that was without challenge.
(04:15):
He did not give his land, hispeople, a land that was without
difficulty.
That is part of the promise, because it's about who we have
to become.
Those giants are there torefine us, to make us bigger, to
make us better, to make usstronger.
What we need to become powerful, what we need to be to become
an overcomer, what we need tobecome victorious and what God
(04:37):
needs in order for us to showhis glory through us and through
our marriage is a giant.
David could not have shown theglory of God if he was bigger
than Goliath.
It took Goliath in order forGod to for David to reveal the
glory of God through Goliath.
And the same is true with yourmarriage.
Right now, you have to adoptthe attitude that the giants are
(04:59):
there, that you may reveal theglory of God through your
marriage, and don't despair.
Understand that you're in theright place and it's not time to
give up Now.
The second thing to understandthat really helped me was that
you're in the right place andit's not time to give up Now.
The second thing to understandthat really helped me was that
you don't know.
God is not going to tell youhow he's going to bring you into
the promised land, the promisedland being your marriage and
the things that he tells youthat you need to do, we just
(05:20):
need to be obedient to.
We don't need to question.
Now, when we look at coming outof slavery into the promised
land, into the wilderness andthen into the Promised Land, it
was full of deliverance in themost unexpected ways.
When the Israelites, when 6million Israelites, were at the
Red Sea and they could literallysee the dust of the chariots.
When the Red Sea closed, itconsumed the entire Egyptian
(05:45):
army.
They must have been withineyesight.
They must have been so close, probably within arrow range of
the Israelites, when the Red Seaclosed upon them.
Catastrophe was absolutely uponthem and the way that God
delivered those Israelites wasthe most unexpected way, even
the tool that he used, even theperson that he used to bring
(06:06):
them deliverance.
Moses was not told what wasgoing to happen.
He said to Moses go up to theRed Sea and plant your staff in
the sea.
And the Red Sea parted.
He didn't say when you do that, the sea will part.
He just told Moses what to do.
Moses was obedient and then thesea parted and the deliverance
from the Egyptian army andcertain death and destruction
(06:27):
was brought about.
Now that Egyptian army is uponyou, and your marriage as well,
I know it seems right now, andit seems like with me, that
certain destruction was rightupon me, but God is faithful and
he will provide a way out.
Let's look at the giants withinthe land.
Even after Caleb and Joshuacame back with the reports of
giants, they still had to getthrough Jericho, the
(06:50):
impenetrable walls of thefortress of Jericho.
Now, how are they going to dothat?
How are they going to defeatthese impenetrable walls?
Well, again, god gave them away where there was no way.
God made a way where there wasno way, and the way he made that
way was completely unexpected.
It was completely unforeseenMarch around the city every day
(07:13):
at seven o'clock for one hourand then, on the seventh day,
blow your trumpets.
Now, I'm not a biblical scholar, I'm just a lay person, but I
may be getting the storyslightly wrong here, but how
many of those six millionIsraelites that were looking at
Jericho as being the obstaclestanding between them and the
promised land, could havepossibly imagined that that's
how the wars of Jericho weregonna fall?
(07:34):
How many possibly could have,in their own strength, seen that
?
How many of them, even how manyeven knew that that was going
to happen or had the faith andbelief that that was going to
happen, until those they blewthose trumpets and those walls
fell down?
Now this is how God saved mymarriage destroys the giants and
the strongholds within yourmarriage and within your health
and with your life.
(07:54):
He's going to do it inunexpected ways, in ways that
only he can do it and ways thatunquestionably bring him the
glory now in our own humanstrength.
In my marriage, I wanted God toshow me how he was going to
deliver me from the giants.
I wanted him to show me how hewas going to deliver me from the
(08:14):
oppression or from the slavery, and God just wanted me to trust
him.
God just wanted me to have me,how he was going to deliver me
from the oppression and from theslavery, and God just wanted me
to trust him.
God just wanted me to havefaith.
Now, I don't know how God isgoing to deliver you.
All I know is that he wants toand he will.
I don't know how God is goingto defeat the giant in your
marriage.
How he defeated them in mymarriage is going to be
completely different to how hedefeated them or how he's going
(08:35):
to defeat them in your marriage, but is going to be completely
different to how he defeatedthem or how he's going to defeat
them in your marriage.
But here's what I can tell youhe is going to defeat them as
long as you hold the faith, aslong as you hold the path, as
long as you keep that belief.
And when you see giants in theland, you've got to rejoice,
you've got to give praise andyou've got to go praise God, I'm
in the right place, althoughthis marriage is difficult right
now.
(08:55):
I know these giants are here, because there are giants in the
land, but this is the land ofmilk and honey and I know that
you're faithful enough, true andjust enough to take these
giants.
I know I can't defeat thesegiants by myself, but I know you
can.
David did not defeat Goliath byhimself.
He defeated Goliath through thewill of God and through the
(09:16):
actions of God.
He was merely the vessel thatdid that.
It was God that did that, andthat is exactly what's going to
happen in your marriage, brother, and that's exactly what's
going to happen in your marriage, sister.
It's only God that can saveyour marriage, and God is
willing to save your marriage.
He wants to save your marriage, but you've got to give your
marriage to him and you've gotto be obedient.
(09:36):
The Israelites had to walkaround the city of Jericho.
God didn't just destroy thewalls without any action.
He gave instructions and thoseinstructions had to be followed.
He told Moses to reach out andstick his staff in the Red Sea
before the Red Sea opened, bringing deliverance and
salvation to the millions andmillions of Israelites that are
(09:56):
fleeing from slavery and fromEgypt.
But Moses had to be obedient.
To do that, moses had to followthe instructions of God, and
that is how God killed thegiants in my marriage and
destroyed the giants.
He was the one that did it, butI had to be the one that was
obedient and take the firststeps, and I had to have the
faith and I had to have thebelief that he was faithful
enough and true enough and justenough and that he was going to
(10:19):
do it and he will do it in histime and he will do it on his
schedule and he will do it whenhe it is right for him, so
hopefully that helps.
