Speaker 1 (00:01):
Now on seven Excess, it's time to talk all things
wild West with Shane Pitt, Mayor of the West Coast
wild West, and it's time now to welcome our Mayor
Shane Pitt to the airwaves this morning. He's not on
the microphone. He's on the telephone again for this week's
edition of the Mirror on here. Good morning mate, how
(00:22):
are you going? Good morning to go pretty good? We
had one day at sunshine this week, so I'm pretty
happy with that.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Very good. It's getting better anyway.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
And he went along to the Tayler of course, the
Charles Woodley Memorial Fishing competition. How did that go?
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, it was pretty good. They had about sixty eight injuries.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
I think it's good.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yes, so not too bad through a lineing off off
the shore, but didn't do any good.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
But anyway, yes I heard that. Never mind that that
makes it more for the others to get a little
bit of success there. All right, well let's get into it.
First of all, you've got an update on mcquarie Heads Road.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah, so we're currently working through permissions with the adjacent
landholders on free alignment of the road. So that's parks
of old life there. So yes, we'll keep the community
up to date. But yeah, we also do understand the
urgency and importance of reinstating access to the mcquarie heads
as soon as possible. But yeah, we're trying to work
(01:26):
through that and hopefully we can get it done as
soon as possible.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Okay, well, well make sure we get updated on that
each and every week there on air. Yeah, so that'll
be good, all right. What about the latest from the
Queenstown Park Headley Fall Park.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yeah, so people will queens people will notice that the
demolition workers has been completed now, so the surveyors have
now been to site and have worked out with the
landscapers on the setting out of the work. So the
landscaping contractor will set you know, we'll be setting up
on the site over the next week or two, so
(02:00):
we should see some installation happening there which will be great.
And yeah, no, it's great. The suit's finally finally.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Happening, absolutely all right. Next on the agenda, second rates installment.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Reminder, Yeah, that's due Friday, the twenty fifth of October,
and of course you can make payments online through the
website at Australia Post d pay at any of our
agencies in Zenstawn or Roseberry or in person and of
course over the phone at the Council office. So yeah,
(02:35):
plenty of options there for residents there to their rates paid.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Absolutely and on that too the Pension Concession remission.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yes, our holders of the Australian Pension Concession or Health
cards are entitled to the Pension Commission remission. So to
be eligible you need to be for the current financial year,
must be an owner of the property and yeah, and
must be your principal place of residence from the first
(03:08):
of July, so calling to the council and gain the
appropriate paperwork and apply for that remission.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Okay, and we've got you. Wanted to touch on the nature
strip policy as well.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, so this came into effect on July the first
as people. As we've mentioned before scurvey and it's in
line with other councils across Australia, so where residents have
that primary responsibility for the maintenance of their natures. But
now we also understand that you know there is some
residents out there they're running capable of looking after their
(03:48):
nature trips, so you know they can contact the Council
office and make an arrangements with regard to that. So
we did put that in the in place right from
the start, but it's people are unable to do that
that we were still will continue to maintain those nature strips,
not to the standard that we do now with short grasp,
(04:11):
but it will be to a standard that will stop
fire risk or any other risks with the nature strips.
But you know, it also gives residents the opportunity to
use that space as well, you know, maybe for parking
cars on it or for for gardens. We noticed in
(04:31):
Hobart recently that they are allowed have allowed people to
grow vegetables on there on the nature strips. So good
opportunity there for people that may not have landing on
their property to be able to grow vegetables and would
like to, Well, there's an opportunity there that they could,
but they need to just contact council beforehand to make
(04:52):
sure that the plants they want to grow there is
not going to be an issue to the public.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
We're going to touch on now the abatement season coming
out for twenty twenty four five.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, so we're starting to we're beginning preparation for abating
for the abating season and just reminded to locals to
maintain the fuel laid on the rural and residential blocks.
You know, it is an issue around our towns that
we do see quite often this time of the year,
that the with amount of the quick growth that we
(05:26):
do see here on the West Coast. So and you know,
we'll be especially abating state growth if our waterways through
our towns become overgrown, which they have done in the past,
and also some vacant land of there. So well, it's
not just we're not just looking at residential blocks either, Scobo.
(05:48):
We're looking at all these other government organizations also, so
we have we've taken them to task to make sure
that they have got their their all their areas sorted
out as well. So yeah, it's it's important that we,
you know, ensure that flammable materials such as overgrown grass, vegetation, weeds, shrubs,
(06:13):
and even the presence of rubbish or other flammable materials
which are likely to cause a fire is reduced or
removed completely. So yeah, we don't we don't want to
see a fire in our town like we're seen in Rosebary.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Something that's right.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
I was devastating for Rosemary residents and put them put
them people under a lot of stress at the time.
So we want to make sure we get to a
situation where we you know, we can if something does happen,
that we can certainly get on top of it quickly.
And you know it won't spread as quick as far
as what it did there in Rose.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Absolutely, we won't forget Tylor either.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Oh, that's right exactly. And Taylor Taylor also, so there's
another another prime example. And we've had zven in the
past and even strawng of recent years as well. I've
all been cop with a bit of fire risks though,
you know, we need to make sure that we get
these areas cleaned up. And I think it was Wednesday
(07:11):
that Parks from my Life has started burning off some
of the area.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Yes, it's good to see it certainly is all right now.
Of course, then coming up in a couple of weeks
or a week's time, we've got Healthfest, which is an
amazing up and coming event in collaboration with many organizations.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, so that's on nine at the nineteenth of October
from ten am to three pm down at the Mountain
Heights School Stadium. So it is a good opportunity for
people to learn a little bit about free health screening
options and lifestyle ideas, free wholesome food which the Lions
Club will be cooking some salmon patties down there, Skurve,
(07:53):
so you'll be on the.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
I'm afraid not actually been in Hobart that week. Okay,
I've got another fine for that mate. There.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
I'll be a way too, so we'll have to leave
it up to the other boys. Just that weekend. But yeah,
to celebrate senior this week and veterans health work as
well and mental health work. So Health Fest West is
put on by you know, the West Coast Councils, the
Study Hub West Coast Utahs in the neighborhood centers across
(08:27):
a zillion neighborhood center. Sorry, so now it's a great
opportunity there for people to learn a little bit about
and there'll be some keynote speakers and presentations talking about
the future direction of healthcare on the West Coast. So
interesting times down.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
These absolutely no great to hear. It's going to be fantastic,
all right. The West Coast Spirit Awards that's still open.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Yeah, still open till the fifth. Sorry, the Friday twenty
second of November. So if anyone wants to nominate a
local volunteer or an or even an event, please you
can nominate by contacting counsel on Community Consultation at West
Coast dot TAZ, dot Cove dot AU or dropping the
(09:11):
office and pick up an application for them. So it
is an important event for US SCURVO to recognize our
local volunteers here on the West Coast.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Absolutely, absolutely, I love it. All right, now we've got
our expressions of interest removal of abatement nuisance.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Yeah, so we talked about abatement season coming up, but
this is for expressions of interest for the provision of
services for the removal of these virus for the twenty
four to twenty five season, and that expressions of interest
must be received by today, the eleventh of October, five pm.
(09:50):
So if anyone's interested, you've only got a short period
of time to get the expression of interest in there.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Absolutely, just off the cap. Somebody was telling me the
other day that there were a lot of politicians in
town a couple of days ago. Do you know anything
about that, mate? No, okay, we'll just skip that in
oh dear, all right, Well that's it for today. There's
nothing else we need to cover. We had no questions
(10:17):
in so thank you for your time. Mayor Shane Pitt.
Have a great weekend, don't work too hard, and we'll
talk to you next week.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
No drums, don't thank you.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Okay, good on your Mayor Shane Pitt joining us for
this week's edition of Mayor on Here back the same
time next Friday, eight thirty after the News here on
seven excess
