Speaker 1 (00:00):
Eight hours or so, and even though tomorrow is going
to get a few late showers, it's going to be
pretty good as well, with plenty of things happening. And
it's time now for this week's edition of The Mayor
on Air, and it's good morning to our Mayor, Shane Pitt. Mate,
how are you going?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Good morning to go house things? Mate?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yeah? Good mate.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
You've been up to Thurrell Hills this morning or yesterday?
I haven't got there yet. I've been in non systems
this part of this week, so meeting, so hoping to
get out there after this. Yeah, you know, fro lining
there for the fishing comps. So yeah, hopefully it looks like.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
It's going to be a good weekend.

Speaker 4 (00:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah, so I think there's already a good turn up
of people out there.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Sue was telling me yesterday when she was up here
yesterday at work that there's plenty of people already out there,
and it's quite hot out there too.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Yeah, so I guess that's one thing that this good
weather does does prove a bit of an issue with
the fishing. But you know, hopefully, as you mentioned, we
might get a little bit of rain tomorrow afternoon which
will help the fishermen absolutely, but you know they still
bite during this good weather as well, so it's good

(01:14):
to see that we've got a good turn up and
you know, hopefully we can exceed our last year's numbers
of things, about one hundred and seventy odd people out
there last year, so hopefully we can get up to
where we've our records around that two or three hundred
people out there, which would be great to see.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Yep, absolutely, thirty one years thirty one fishing competitions at Thoroughhead.
It's quite a remarkable achievement and I think the Queens
Down Angels Club and they're sponsors that are on board,
deserve special credit for keeping it going.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Yeah, it is a great, great event and as you
mentioned thirty one years, well it could even be longer
than that, but that's what the records got show. But
you know, it's I guess it's one of the things
that the Lake Berbery wasn't always there.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
No, well that's true.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Hydro DMed the King scheme and then ever since then
we've had the fishing comp so you know, it's it's
a great, great opportunity for all the Tasmanians and you know,
even in the past, we've had international fishermen over even
Sweden and the US as well, So it's great to
see that. You know that the compounds got international recognition

(02:28):
out there as well, so we can bring and even national.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
People have come across.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Yeah, it's come across the Strait just to participate in
the competition.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Absolutely, No, it's it's just amazing. Yeah, that's how it's
so highly renowned.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yeah, and you know, a lot of people seem to
catch a lot of fish, although I don't seem to do.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
We'll sow we go this year.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Some people might say that's justice, but I do believe
that because the levels are a little bit lower that
that makes it all good for the fishing, so that
hopefully there'll be a lot of catchers out there.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Yeah, although it is high, but lower than what it
was probably about three or four weeks ago. Was you know,
I think the lake might have been spilling all very
close to She's down a little bit, but you know,
it's still a good water level out there.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Absolutely. Now the roads are looking pretty good now.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
They are they certainly are.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, So travel to as I mentioned, travel to Lon
system this week and the Crater Mountain Link RADS still
got a little bit of work to be done on it.
They are working on it at the moment, so they've
got the crews out there doing the podoles and it's
I guess it's this side of the Crater Mountain.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Turn off which is the worst.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
But yeah, it's certainly working on that and the Murchison
and originally highways. They are looking pretty good now.

Speaker 5 (03:46):
Of all, most of the podles.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Have been fixed now and yeah, it looks pretty good.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
And you know, it looks like they've done a fairly
good job within podoles as well.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
When you the amount of.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Hop mix that they've put in there, absolutely is to
be working that hot mix now, doesn't It does.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Seem to be working.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
And I guess it's a little bit more costs, but
at least it will will hold up now.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah, yeah, no, it's great now. I think it's a
relief more than eything else.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yeah, And I guess you know, that's what advocating does
and to the state government. You know, we get in
a few letters about that, and I've talked to the
Secretary of State Growth as.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Well and also the General Manager of Road.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
So we've certainly been putting our case forward and they've listened.
So yeah, you know, and for those people that have
called into the hotline for the roads, I thank them
as well for their participation. And you know they do
listen once we get on there, get on our high horse.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
I guess you could.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Say they might think that, but anyway, I think it's
a I think it's an essential high hat, so to speaks.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
No, it is certainly essential something which we need to
to thank all our residents that have absolutely anticipated in
calling into the State Growth hotline because it's there that's
what State Roads listen to the people on the ground
as well.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
So all right, it's going to be a huge weekend
this weekend. Not only have we got the fishing comp on,
but how great is it the Chris Fagan born here
on the West Coast. His origins are here, is footy
origins are here, and I don't think the West Coast
was more prouder when he as coach was a premiership
coach this year and that's really the reason why we've

(05:36):
asked him to call. You've asked him to come down here.
People have asked that we do that, that we get
him down here, and we've got him and you guys
are that the council deserve a lot of credit for that.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Yeah, well there was something which you know, when they
run won the Grand Fine, I thought, oh, well, this
opportunity for a home grown boy to bring.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
The cup back to.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
The Queenstown, to Tasmania and and certainly to Queenstown. And
when that's all, he's coming. He's coming to Queenstown. So
he flies into Hobart this morning, all today, sorry, and
then he'll travel down with his brother Grant, yes to
Queenstown tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (06:16):
Yeah, and it's great to see that.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
You know. I send a letter to Chris early on
and then Grant reached out recently to see what was
happening and how things were going. So you know, thanks
to Grant as well for Lea being the liaison between
counsel and Chris. And you know we did ask Chris

(06:39):
if you could bring the players, but.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
They've got things on at the market. They can't.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
You can't get them down here, and I guess the
cost would have been a great imposs So you know,
I've supported Chris in this by donating his ear fares
to come down and we'll look after his accommodation as
well while he's here.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
So you know, it's.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Great that we can bring the cup down here and
it's great to see the AFL TAS have come on
board as well.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Yeah, because they're doing some clinics, aren't they.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
They're going to run a kids clinic from.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
Two pm which is free for all kids.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
At the moment, we've got about sixty five that are registered,
but you know, if anyone wants to turn up on
the day, by all means, ployees come along and they'll
get an opportunity there to do a bit of clinic work.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
With AFL TAZ.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
I'm not sure who's coming from AFL TAS, but you know,
hopefully we get some good recognized well, if not players,
some good names there the X players. But you know, yeah,
so it is great to see that Chris was able
to bring the cup down. It's not something which you
see very often. I know the Hawks brought it down

(07:49):
when they won their three peaks back in twenty fifteen.
But you know, we know what the Hawks are to Tasmania.
They call Tasmani's one of their home grounds as well.
But this is a great opportunity for people to get
and see the Cup and also a great opportunity for
Chris to come back to to the West Coast, back

(08:12):
to the Gravel Oval.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
He's calling in.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
To see the people at house that.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Morning, all which is great to be able for some
of them older people that would know Chris quite quite
well to see him and the cup. And also he's
going to I think he might begin a tour Saint Joseph,
where he started his school career and a school life
and also you know, probably started his football career there

(08:41):
back in back in the day.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
But it's great to see that we're able to get
him along.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
I spoke to him yesterday. Actually we were able to
do an interview at the last minute, which was fantastic.
Appreciated his time, and I think he's really looking forward
to coming back because it's been a while. In fact,
he said that the bike track was still on the
reck ground when he was last year, so I think
a few changes he might be pleasantly surprised.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Yes, I reckon so mate, And you know, there's still
a lot of work that we need to do to
the old ground, but well we can't do much to
the inner ground but apart from coeper the way it is,
but we can certainly do a bit more around the outside,
which we're you know, we've got a bit of a
master plan with regard to that which we'll work on

(09:23):
over the coming years. But you know, these things don't
happen overnight as well. And you know, for anyone who
wants to come along there on tomorrow to meet Chris,
and also you have an opportunity to view the cup
and I guess get a photo with Chris and the cup.
That starts at three point thirty there at the wreck
and then there's a barbecue afterwards at the Crows clubroom.

(09:44):
So yeah, action packed, action packed day.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, it's just great. It's just great. So
really looking forward to that. All right, Well that's what
that weekend, So this weekend, so that's all coming up.
It's a huge weekend on the way to the West Coast.
We'll take a break and we'll be back with more
on mere on are shortly here at seven excess.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
Us, We certainly are.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
We're back with the mayor right now and we have
to get stuck into other council information and of course
the council meeting coming up, yes.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
Mate, that's coming up this Tuesday, twenty sixth of November,
earning at five PM as normal and you know, as
we quite often discuss a monthly scurvey that you know,
it's open for the public and if people that can't
attend but would like to put a question without notice,

(13:16):
they can submit that to the general manager up to
midday on the twenty sixth. So yeah, we've had the
last couple of meetings we haven't had. We've had a
couple of people in the gallery which is good to
see and you come along with some questions. So yeah,
it'd be good to see some people along in the gallery,

(13:37):
but if they can't, by all means opened with questions
without notice as well.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
Absolutely, What do you think is the most pressing issue
that you guys are dealing with at the moment?

Speaker 3 (13:48):
Oh, I guess, well it's been rates, but that seemed
to have calmed down, and I guess you know, we've
got infrastructure work happening, which you see we're looking out
across the road here mate, with the playground here in
Queenstown that's happening. The skate park and Rasburry certainly look
looking good and that shouldn't be too far from opening

(14:09):
the skate park over then, and then of course with
the Zone playground or start straight after the Queenstown one,
well maybe even before the Queenstown one's completed, but the
same contractors doing both, so no doubt he's got a
planning place for that. But yeah, I guess the Straw
and Zoo gyms are looking good as well, so we're
hoping that we put a bit of pressure on the

(14:31):
guys to make sure that try and get the Zone,
Jim and Pool open at least, you know, early in
the new year.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
But we'll see how that goes.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
I guess the weather's looking a little bit kinder now
for them, so hopefully they can get on and get
them play them joints open.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
With the parks. I've had just a few people. I've
heard a few comments about, well it was this one
here Headley Fall Park was good enough as it was.
Why did we to change it?

Speaker 3 (15:01):
Well, play equipment only last for ten years and then
it has to be changed out.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
It's R H and S reasons.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
Now, it's interesting that people, you know, they come out
of the woodwork now, but.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
This has been going on for two years now.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
We've we've added out to community consultation and we had
we had a lovely group of ladies that come along
and and fathers come along when we had the open day,
you know, to talk about the plans, and they were
they were quite you know, those people were quite impressed
with what was going on and what was happening. They

(15:38):
put some forward some some different ideas that they'd like
to see, which we took back to.

Speaker 5 (15:43):
The the guys that.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
Were designing the playgrounds and they.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
Put some of them back into the the plans as well.
So you know, there has been plenty of opportunities for
people to speak up.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
And you know, it wasn't as if it.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Didn't need to be like we know, the equipment was
good in there, but it wasn't good enough for H
and S wise.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
You know, things.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
Change and playgrounds is one of the things that I've
got a teen year life and that's it. And then
you need to look at changing or with rh and
f S regulations changing, then playgrounds have to change as well.

Speaker 5 (16:23):
So that's one of the main reasons. Plus you know,
we want.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
To see.

Speaker 5 (16:28):
Different erarors come with different ideas.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
So yeah, okay, now, thank you for that information. I
hope that's answered people's questions all right now. Something that
I think people have been very much wondering about what's
happening with Macauarie Heads. You've got another update for us today.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Yeah, some mcquarie Heads road is now open for traffic
to ocean boats, which is great to see. And you
know it's this time of the year that people starting
getting down to Macquarie Heads for camping, et cetera. So
it's good to see that we're able to get that
road open in time for that period. So yeah, thanks
to the staff that have been able to redirect that

(17:08):
road around the collapse in the.

Speaker 5 (17:13):
Bank there. But you know, it's the road's open. I
guess that's the main thing.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
Absolutely, No, fantastic, So safety measures are all in place
and that sort of thing, so that nothing for people
to worry about.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
No, no, that's all.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
You know, that's one thing we certainly do look at
and make sure that we've got right is the safety
aspects of these things. And of course you know that
won't stop there. We'll continue to work on that road area.
There's probably some gabians that need to be installed down
the track of at least now access to ocean beach
is available now, and then we'll work on a long

(17:48):
term solution with how we stop the erosion of the
road moving forward.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
Sure that good stuff all right, well, Intersection renewal program.
This is to do with up on ping Gana Hill.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
Yeah, ping.

Speaker 5 (18:04):
That's the first one mate that's underway at the moment.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
People, we've probably seen the a lot of the.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Flags, et cetera.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
And there's also a lot of signage in that area,
so please obey the signage for your own safety and
for others in the area. So you know, it is
something which we've Benarder to attract some funding for to
do some of this intersection work. But also that's you know,

(18:37):
where some of our rates go as well, so for
those people that want to know where your rights go.
There and a couple of examples there, and you know
we're working through there's also a couple others that need
to be happening as well.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
So we've got.

Speaker 3 (18:52):
After this one with ping Ganner Road and this blood
estplanadere's also the Presston Street and Esplanade intersection down near
the swimming pool there and then Urquatt Street and the
Esplanade intersection will follow on from this. And you know
we've also got some work which will be happening over
in Zoon as well.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
And you know, we'll work right around all the towns on.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
The West Coast to make sure our intersections become a
safe avenue for pedestrians and motorists to alike. So yeah,
we're certainly working through these.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
Excellent all right now community planned twenty thirty five engagement
sessions that's still happening.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
Yeah, well it's just an opportunity for people to view
the draft twenty thirty five community Plan, so that's out there.
So the team have got some pop up sessions. They've
already had a couple now with the Gem and Mineral
Fair and also the Rosebury Market, but we've also we'll

(19:54):
also have the Strong Twilight Market which is on the
twenty ninth November from four point thirty p six thirty
pm they'll be down there with a pop up session
and also the Queenstown Market on Sunday the eighth of
December from eleven am to one pm. Also they'll be
you know, if anyone wants to call in and have
a look at the plan or chat about the plan

(20:14):
if they've seen it on the on the website. It's
an opportunity there to put you know, some further well
some further information forward or if people aren't happy with it,
that's their time, you know, to talk to the consultants
and the team to.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
Put their voices forward.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
All right now, the West Coast Spirit Awards closing time
for nominations today.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
Yes, mate five pm today, So if anyone got a
late nomination they want to get in, they've got to
five pm today to get that in. But you know,
it's certainly a great thing for the West Coast community
and it's something which it's been ongoing for many years now,
although it's had a name change. It was the Australianay

(20:58):
Awards now it's the West Coast Spirit Wars. But you
know it's still the same thing, still means the same
thing for the recipients that are nominated. Yes, an opportunity
and it doesn't have to be an individual, can be
a group or it can.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
Be an event as well.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
So you know, please if anyone out there is thinking
that there is someone in our community that needs recognition,
please nominate them.

Speaker 1 (21:21):
Name absolutely all right, and we'll finish off with some
positions vacant.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
Yeah, So we've got a Coordinator of Projects and Infrastructure
that closes on this Sunday, the twenty fourth of November
at five pm and also an economic development coordinator also closing.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
On this Sunday at five pm. So a couple of
great opportunities there for.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
People in our community, or you know, even if people
know someone outside the community that may you know, maybe
ideal for that position.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
Please pass it on.

Speaker 3 (21:56):
And it would be great to see some new well,
you know, if we can't get someone from our local
community into them position, someone new coming into our community,
which would be great to see.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
Yeah, absolutely, all right, Well that's it. Thank you very
much for all that, and if anybody wants to submit
a question for next week's Mayor on Air, make sure
you do so via our website at SEVENXS dot com
dot au. Mayorshipp Chainpitter is always thanks for your time.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
Thanks Skervo. And you know, hopefully this weather keeps on
for the.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
Rest of the year.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
Absolutely, it wouldn't be great. I hope you catch some
fish made at the weekend.

Speaker 2 (22:33):
I'll try.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
Thanks mate. There we go, Mayor Shane Pitt joining us
this morning for all this week's edition of Mayor on Air.
