Speaker 1 (00:02):
It is time for Mayor OnAir with Deputy Mayor Robert
Butterfield and also General Manager Scott Riley. Good morning to
you both.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Good morning, good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Okay, let's start with it. We've got some list of questions.
We've got three here. Now that the federal election is over,
did the West Coast receive any promises from the federal government?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yes, we did in terms of our key election priorities.
One of our major focuses was the upgrade of Telster
services for the West Coast and the federal government had
committed to investing around ten million to actually lift those
Telstra services and I think that'll be a massive benefit

(00:42):
for most people on the West Coast.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
That was when n Urkhart was here. That is correct,
That's right. Okay. The second question the new council website
can't find in reference to Mayor on Air. The last
Mayor's update is one years old. No reference to council
meetings or live streaming. Can I get in here? On
air is on the seven Excess website. That is Sevenexcess
dot com dot au. Check out the shows you'll find

(01:06):
Mayor on Air. That's where you put your listen to
questions and that's where you can see what happens each
and every Friday. Yep, Okay, we'll go to the third question.
What is the current situation on the old school building
in Queenstown.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
The old school building, the one the central school as
everybody would know about it. We've put up some recent
fencing around that. We've got a number of gutters that
are up on the second story that are loosen and
the imminent risk of falling, and as persons were moving
in and around that site, we were looking to protect
their safety. Moving forward, there is interest in the site

(01:44):
from Homes Tasmanian in relation to new housing opportunities for community,
but Council will be considering that moving forward into the
new financial year.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Right, Okay to other council information dog registrations Robert.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah, Andrew, just you fucking just for the dog registrations.
If I can just have a little bit more to
question too about the last mini's update on the West
Coast Council website. Right, the website has up undergone a
fever bit of upgrades recently, but I will check with
the staff and make sure and make sure that we
get all those updates put back in place on that website,
so we'll work on that and hopefully should be done

(02:20):
shortly for you.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
That'd be great. Okay, dog registrations now.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yep, so dog registrations, dog registration renewals have been sent
out to residents. Registration renewals and dog registrations completed by
thirtieth of the June also receive a fee discount. Council
also offers a discount for Concession cardholders. Dog owners can
pay an annual registration fee. However, Council also office registration
for three years or whole of life. It's a great

(02:44):
option to save money and remove the risk of forgetting
to register your pet. Dog registration renewals and new dog
registrations can be completed at the Council office and at
our agencies at the Strong Post Office, ZM Post Office
and the Rose Registrict School. Remember to bring proof of
sterilization and micro when you register your dog for the
first time. If your dog was registered previously with the

(03:04):
West Coast Council and you haven't received your renewal notice,
please contact the office. And if you left the West
Coast or bid Fairwell to or do your companion, please
advise the Council. So our records can be updated accordingly.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
That sounds great. Now, food license renewals, we have this
on last week.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
We did, but just a reminder that food businesses will
be receiving their license renewals. Current food licenses still expire
on the thirtieth of the June. Existing street dining permits
will be invoiced separately, and a new discount of fee
of one hundred dollars per table to be introduced to the
twenty twenty five twenty six financial year. If you are
yet to receive your food business renewal, please contact the.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Office to the electronic rates notice.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yep so electronic rates notices. You can really receive your
rates notice direct to your email if you choose to.
And if you prefer to receive your rates notice electronically,
please register by s getting the QR code on your
current rates notice or registering online at registrations dot PML
dot com a forward slash West Coast. If you have
any questions regarding your rates notice or payments, call a

(04:06):
council office on six four seven one four seven hundred,
or you can email rates at West Coast dot TAZ,
dot Dove dot.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
AU Okay burn brighter, I know that a lot of
people are burning at the moment, especially inside their homes.
Sta't put rubbish in, that's the main thing.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Yeah, So with more people lighting their fires now the
weather's cooler, it's important to remember to use wood wood
files correctly to reduce the smoke and to create more heat.
So people can do such things as when starting the
fire or adding wood, keep their ear and take open
for twenty minutes. Shutting down the air and take after
twenty minutes can reduce smoke by ninety percent. So you
know good used good dry season wood and keep your

(04:44):
ear in takes open when you're first lighting your fire
before you shut them down.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Sounds great, guys, We need to take a break. Yes,
good morning eight forty two. We are with the Deputy
Mayor Robert Butterfield and the General Manager of the West
Coast Council, Scott Riley. Were back again, Scott to you

(05:08):
the economic development opportunities.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yes, Andrew, this is something that a lot of listeners
are probably not aware of. In the state based planning scheme,
there's a number of things that are exempt from actually
requiring a planning approval. There might be other approvals required,
but I'll just give a couple of examples home based businesses.
If you're using a square mettage in a floor area
inside in existing residential premises for a micro business, you know,

(05:34):
sidekick that sort of thing up to forty square meters
and it doesn't involve a few other things that I
can speak to residents about. If they're interested, that's an
economic development opportunity. They can actually move into that space. Wow,
you know, we've just heard on the news that la
boo boo effect. You know, that sort of dynamic, that

(05:54):
creative enterprise that our community's renowned for.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
It's a lot of money.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
That's exactly right. The next idea that you can leverage
out of that experience. The other one that we often
hear about on the West Coast is childcare, and home
based childcare is another example of that. You can use
an existing residence for home based childcare. Yes, there's other
approvals required by the state bodies and the like, but

(06:20):
there's no approvals required from the council to actually use
an existing residence for childcare. So there's opportunities for young
mothers out there that looking to use the study hubin
Zen to actually upgrade their qualifications and learning and actually
start a micro business to support our community.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
And we're very short of childcare here. That's exactly right,
right another example.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Another example is markets on public land. You don't need
a planning approval for that. You just need to contact
council and set up your market store if you want
to be on public land. That sort of dynamic. There's
a number of structures that exist in the state based
planning scheme that allow people to do different things. Another

(07:09):
example is that you don't need a planning approval for
keeping bees which are pollinators, so you know there's a
number of things there or occasional uses, so.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
You don't need to talk to your next door neighbor
and said I've got two highs coming in a couple
of weeks.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
The dynamic is we'd encourage residents to talk to their neighbors.
But I'm talking about the planning skame itself, the planning
itself and that regulatory framework under planning that doesn't require
connections in those spaces. But to all those that are
hearing this out there, I'd be keen for them to
touch base with counsel, happy to field questions if they've

(07:45):
got an idea for an economic development solution, or they've
got an idea that the don't want to start up
a side gig that sort of scenario. Happy to have
that conversation.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Sounds great. Anything else in council that we need to
know about.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Across the road where we've had the park, we've seen
a little bit more activity. Guys are on site this morning.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
I've seen a wall go up during the week.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
That's correct. Yeah, so there's plenty of activity happening, which
is good.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Because a lot of people are saying, I don't think
it's gonna be opening at the end of June, is it.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
We're working very hard towards that. We've got a couple
of weeks to go. I can see that most of
the stuff that they need on site there is actually
in place ready to go and go.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
It's a matter of just moving it all into place.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
That's right. And we're working towards two official openings of
both the parking zine and the one in queenstant.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
And let's hope seven excess can be involved. That's correct, heky, gentlemen,
thank you very much for today. I will see you
