Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning, gentlemen. We've got Shane Pitch and general manager
Scott Riley. How are we good morning here world. It's
not Friday, it is a Thursday morning. Tomorrow is Beroni
Show Day is a public holiday for the West Coast. Okay,
Mayor on air, let's do it. We've got a listener
question here. Will the streets be pressure washed and tidy

(00:22):
before the unconformity currently slimy and dangerous in places?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yes, Andrew, on my walk around at five o'clock yesterday
afternoon checking out the new park across the way identified
with a couple of the team members, there is a
couple of spots there that will make attention to and
we'll certainly get that done before the unconforming.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Okay, you've heard that now. Expressions of interest for the
fire abatement contractors.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yes, Fire abatement season's not far away. The dynamic around
that is we're keen to get our local contractors on
the playing field and engage with them, and our current
expressions of interest are out has its season. Services are
very broad and we're encouraging everybody to consider can they make,

(01:08):
can they slash? Can they brushcut? Can they do any
of those things, and it's not just in one particular community,
it's all the communities around the West Coast.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Right, so expression vines must be sleep by Friday, the
seventh of November. That is correct, Yes, right okay, Fire Hazards.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Fire has its based on the viabatement Contractors Councils currently
commenced this process of inspecting properties for fire hazard leading
into the season, given that last year was quite challenging
for us with over one hundred thousand hectares burnt on
the West Coast. At this point in time, fire has

(01:46):
ad Basement knows haven't been issued, but we're encouraging property
owners to be proactive and take all the potential steps
they can to actually reduce that risk. As part of
the property owner is potentially participating with Tasmanian Fire Service
and that Bushfire Ready challenge. We're encouraging everybody to register

(02:09):
and receive the weekly challenges across four weeks, helping to
plan and prepare their households.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Right Okay, Employment to register.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Employment regie Yes Councils has a diverse range of work
opportunities and from time to time and have short term availability,
so encourage everybody to be part of the employment register
and which allows us to you know, when we've got
your details, allows counsel to make immediate contact and create

(02:39):
some opportunities for locals. If you go to the website,
there will be a place there where people can register.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Fantastic. Also lifeguards to work at the Queenstown and Seem
swimming pools.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
That is exactly correct. Lifeguards season is coming around that
particular process. Season begins in December, so there's a little
bit of training and preparation work that needs to be
done with all our pools. We have the one in
Zen and sort of gave a step up around our

(03:10):
official opening, so we're looking for people to engage and
participate with that lock guard program sounds great.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Scott will have a take take a break. We are
back with Shane and Scott and of course Shane. The
official opening is in Strawn.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Yeah, so Andrew, this is exciting times for us to
announce the official openings for the Straw Slip Ray and
also the Strong gym and multi purpose center down there
on Tuesday, the fourteenth of October. So we're finalizing the
program with regard to that opening, but please mark this
date in your calendars. And yeah, We hope to see
as many people there as possibles, like the opening over

(03:48):
there at Zino. Two hundred people for them for that
opening which is west wasn't it it was? It was.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
So that's happening Tuesday, the fourteenth of October.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, down there and Strawn. So yeah, so as many
residents as long as possible.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Why not. Okay, the Hitley Fall Park here across the
road from the studio.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yes, mate, the fence is final. It is this and
well it's taken you know, it's been a year. But
it's great to see that the fence is now down
and we've already seen a lot of children over there
playing on the equipment, which was great to see. And
but a small section of the area will remain fenced
until we get the ash felding done around the half half.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Have you played on the Flying Fox? Not as yet, mate, No, Scott,
not yet.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
But we're waiting for improved whether to get that ash
felt down for that half court basketball court. But yeah,
but we'd like to thank the community for their patients
with regard to this.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
It's been a.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Long it's project. We've had a lot of delays and
we've had some delays that were run for soon back
in the start, it would have been good with some
of these people that put a couple of them fences
in front of has come forward right at the start
and assisted. But it's now, you know, it's it's open
for the for the children now and the public and

(05:09):
we'll have an official opening and a community celebration later
on the year when the weather improves so we can
get some good weather over there.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
I'll tell you what. That grass is very very green.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
It is mate. Yeah, I was commenting on that early
when we're looking out the window. It's and it's quite
lush as well, so the raps we might need to
mark very shortly.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
I think someone got to go to a land maybe.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Yeah. And there will be some other fencing just up
around some draining as while. We'll fix that as well.
But yeah, you know it's great to see that the
park's open for the children to.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Start using for everybody actually, and just in.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
Time for the school holidays, so which are on now.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
Yeah, that goes to the West Coast events, yeah next
this month.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, so the next few months busy times here on
the West Coast. You know, we've got the Unconformity Festival
coming up on the sixteenth to the nineteenth of October
and Queenstown. It's great to see that the gravel over
when the Unconformity Ad playing on TV.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
The last couple of weeks I've seen that, yes.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Including during the AFL Grand Final, so we've got a
very good spot there and as also during the brown
Leigh so good to see that on the map. It does,
it does, yeah, and we've also got to next week
in on the eleventh of Octobers the Charles Woodley Memorial
Fishing Competition in Tuller and the other the region's other

(06:29):
big fishing camp, the Lake Berbery Fishing Camp, is also
on again the twenty first to the twenty third of November.
Interesting now open for the fishing camps. Check our website
and the Facebook pages for information and of course go
to the Queens and English Club website as well if
you need any other information on the Lake Berbury one.

(06:52):
And of course we have much love West Coast Heritage
and Mineral Minerals Fair on the eighth and ninth of
November and Zoom as well, so another great event there
for for the West Coast.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
A lot of people come internationally just to come and
see this I believe they do.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
They do, and you know we talk about even the
fishing comps. We have international national fishermen come to that
as well, so therese are great events. And then of
course we've got the Mount Last Straw and picnic down
there in Straw and in the start of.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Next year, so it's Christmas time.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Yeah, so you know, start training for the races down there,
and are you going to have a bit of a run, mate.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
I was going to go last year, but things got
in the way. I will go this year. I think
it's good to see what goes on in different little
little villages and towns.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
And there's a lot of great, great things going around
these the West Coast, and a lot of these things
organized by volunteers, which is great to see.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Because we've got the sky running May next year as well.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
There is a lot happening. And as I mentioned, you know,
the volunteers play a big part in these activities in
our community. So you know, thanks to all them volunteers.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
And I suppose if you want to become a volunteer,
just get in touch. I mean, you know, it's not
all about the older people, it's the younger ones getting
involved exactly.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Mate, Yeah, it's great.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Yeah, Okay, some sad things. The Bendigo Bank, Yes, that's
very disappointing. I saw these safe get taken away yesterday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Yes, so they finally closed their doors.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
And yeah, it's a significant challenge for community. But on
behalf of counsel like to thank everybody that was involved
in that process and you know, the politicians that did
their best in that space. There's a significant challenge for
us moving forward. But I'd like to mention a special
thanks to Janet Leigh for her hard work and the

(08:49):
continuing effort that she's making and supporting people in community.
But unfortunately people power didn't win this time around.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
The wast part about it is the beny Goo Banks
see hasn't even got in touch with anybody.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
That's right. He's been quiet, you know, and we've taken
a lot of avenues to try to get the bend
to Go Bank to all the CEO to to talk
to to the community, but still haven't been able to
attract him down here or even yes, to attract him
to a phone call or anything. But so very disappointing.

(09:27):
But I guess on that note, also please remember to
be patient with the post office staff as they're going
to have a high number of customers over there in
the post office and the girls over there do a
tremendous job, so we need to be patient with that
as well. But you know, we're still not finished. We'll

(09:47):
still continue on some different other avenuws and we've got
some other meetings coming up and off you the Creatile
Coast Authority meors all the means across the Northwest Coast.
Wrote to Richard Fennell and the CEO of Credit Coast Authority,
and we've got a meeting with a couple of representatives

(10:09):
of bendi Gay Bank. I don't know what it's going
to do now, but you know we can certainly we'll
highlight our frustrations with the bank and you know.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
Well we've got the likes of unconformity happening in a
couple of weeks time. When you think about it, now,
where's all that money going to go?

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Exactly? Mate, Yeah, it's going to be a big issue.
And you know, we even tried the Bendiga Bank if
they'd leave the ATM here for a bit longer. Given
it they're losing that building till June next year, so
the building's just going to be sitting there empty. We
have got another ATM in the town that needs to
be serviced, and the same people could be servicing that

(10:46):
ATM while they're down doing that could be serving the
Bendige Bank one.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
So you know it's going to be a busy little ATM.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Yes, and the Bendio Bank talk talks about being a
community bank. Well you know in this light, they're not
a community.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
I saw a commercial on TV last night in Channel
seven Bendy Goo Bank, the bigger, better bank. Now where
is it? It's gone?

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Yes, everybody's everybody who watches that at on television knows
in our communities that that's not true.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
Well why is it being showed around here on the
West Coast? That's what I want to know. But anyway,
it's on O case Is and brighter stuff. The West
Coast Visit Information Center.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Yes, tourism season is upon us, so from the Monday
to sixth of October, the Visitor Information Center and Strawn
will open from ten thirty am to five thirty pm
Monday to Friday. So we're looking to welcome all the
new visitors back into our region. Winters behind us, so
it's a great opportunity for us to engage with new

(11:48):
stakeholders and customers and introduce our region to the rest
of the world. It will remain closed on weekends and
public holidays, but the expanded hours allow us to rack
with all the customers that come.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
I'd see you. In the last couple of weeks, I've
seen a lot of caravans, a lot of RVs, little vans,
and they've parked here, there and everywhere, and I believe
the Unconformity is going to tract a lot of those
as well.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
That's true. Yeah, that's that's correct, and I guess so.
The other thing on that point is for those other
people around the West, other towns in the West Coast,
there is going to be a bus service bringing people
into the Young Conformity from our other towns around the
West Coast. So yes, jump on board and make it

(12:34):
a great weekend for yourselves at the Unconformity Festival.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
And of course, if you do want to jump on
board the Unconformity dot com dot au anymore we need
to talk about.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
I would just like to say to everybody around the park,
if the weather's fine, come and use it and we'll
enjoy put seeing people there in the local park here
at Headley Fall in Queenstown.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
It sounds great. Thank and then, gentlemen, thank you for
today and I'll see you next Friday. Shane you will okay?
That is Mayor on air because the Mayor Shane Pittoni
Course general manager Scott Riley. Have you got any questions
for the mayor, whether it be in your street of town.
I get in touch with us, just ask. We'll ask
it for you. Go to Sevenexcess dot com dot au.
That is Mayor on air. All thanks to the West
