Speaker 1 (00:01):
Now on seven Excess, it's time to talk all things
wild West with Shane Pitt, Mayor of the West Coast.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Yes, good morning to you get time for me or
on their Good morning Shane, Good morning Andrew. How are you?

Speaker 3 (00:14):
I love it's Friday, Yes, close to the weekend for.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Some weekends just around the corner, it is okay, council matters,
We've got no listener questions. Others are the new recycling
hub that's happening down there at council.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Yes, this is a great initiative there, Andrew, and it
gives people another opportunity to recycle special items to the
monthly really been recycling collection. So that's you can drop
off a great range of items down at the new hub,
which is in the council chambers. They're in reception. So

(00:47):
there's batteries, oral care products and packaging like toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Okay, yeah, which is a one you wouldn't think of that, No,
you wouldn't.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Medication, blister packs and markers, mobile phones and accessories, raisers
in their packaging, and small eWays such as remote controls,
computer mouses and handheld cameras. So yeah, it's it'll be
open Monday to Friday, which during opening hours of the

(01:18):
council chambers, so there's no cost involved in that, which,
you know, it's great to see and I'm hoping this
will be the first of a few units which we'll
get around our town.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
So it seems like a great initiative.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
It is made, and I guess it's another step forward
as a focus on improving waste and recycle options in
our community. Yes, and that's I guess that's the whole
idea of this is trying to reduce our amount of
waste that goes into our landfill.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Right, Okay, then we've got some positions making that council.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Yeah, we've got a couple of positions there at the moment, Andrew.
There's the executive Officer who provides support to myself and
the general manager, and also a Community Grants Officer who
works close with the community develop programs and projects, including
applying for funds. Both rolls of full time and based

(02:08):
in the Queenstown Office and position descriptions are available from
the council office or through the website where people can
submit their applications online. Yeah, and applications. Both of these
applications closed on Monday, the eleventh of August, so a
little time off here get Andrew, but not far away.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Not far away. Yeah, Okay, let's talk about the Bendigo Bank.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Yeah, so we've we're continuing discussions regarding the Bendigo Bank closure.
So this is including meetings with the bank representatives, politicians
and also community members. But our hats off to Jeanette
Lay and other community members who have taken leadership role
in coordinating response to the closure, which is great to see.

(02:55):
There's a petition out there at the moment and she's
certainly done all she has, mate she has. Yeah, So
counsel is supportive of the efforts to change the bank
back to a community bank.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Have you heard anymore from We had a.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
Meeting with him yesterday. So yeah, we're just working through
that now and just see what what comes with that
is not at this stage now, but you know, we'll see.
We're talking about a public meeting at three pm on Sunday,
the third of August at the Memorial Hall in Queenston

(03:34):
after the market, so we'd hope, we'd hope as many
people as possible could turn up to that, which will
show the support. But you know, it is we'd like
to see it back to a community bank, bearing in
mind that this would need a lot of community support
and more than what the bank has had in the past.
So you know, it's and it might mean people changing

(03:57):
their bank accounts back to the Bendigo putting your hands
up to go on the board. But right now there's
a few ways that people can help community petition as
I mentioned. Yeah, it's online as well. Mate. Yeah, so
I guess we're still working through it. The meeting we
had yesterday wasn't all that positive, but you know, let's

(04:20):
keep up the fight and we'll see how we go.
But yeah, it's and we were able to yesterday get
a little bit more out of the Bendi Gay Bank
with regard to the fees at the post office. So
that twelve month period they've extended that to two years,
which is not doesn't sound real good for.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
The post office ready to take on all.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
This, Well, I believe so talking to the people yesterday
from the Bendi Gay Bank, they believe that the post
office ready to.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Rock and hear that.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
So haven't talked to the post office themselves or the
people that are in that post office, but yeah, I guess,
you know, I guess we'll continue the fight and so.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
How we go, how we go, okay, Shane, we'll take
a break. You're on better music and more of at
West Coast seven Excess, okay.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Keeping you in touch with your community.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
We're talking with the.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Mayor of the West Coast, Shane pit on West Coast
seven Excess.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Yesterday morning. We are back with mayor on there, Shane.
We're talking about council meeting next Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
Yeah, five pm Andrew Tuesday, twenty second of July. So
the meetings are open to the public, as we mentioned
quite often, and people can attend in person or watch
live stream through our YouTube channel, although we are we
have had some trouble with that live streaming yep, but

(05:51):
hopefully we can get that working this time. And it
is we have had our it. People look at finding
what the issue is, but I believe it is software.
But we'll see how we you know, we'll see how
we go this this week.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Hopefully if you're not you can't that's right, exactly, not
going person.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
But we do thank people for their patients with regard
to this is not something which we take lightly. We
are you know, and I guess it's only been since
COVID that the live streaming come about technology it is
mate and I guess you know before that people had
to attend in person there was no live streaming. So yeah,
but if any if the public have got any questions,

(06:34):
which one will be asked at the council meeting, they
can submit a question by contacting the Council office more
details a cur report to be considered. That this meeting
is our annual plan for twenty five twenty six, So
we've taken on board the community feedback received during the
submission period earlier this year. And yeah, so that's.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Important to do. The meetings take me.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Normally we're finished by seven o'clock. There's only a couple
of hours and that's that's that'd be a late meeting
normally about an hour and where wrap it up, But
depending on what's on the agenda, of course, Andrews and
of course the agendas are on the website as well,
and we do have copies of the agenda at the

(07:23):
meeting for the public to view if they come along.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Right, Okay, let's go to the rate notice. Delay has
got problems there.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, so we've had a delay in getting the twenty
five twenty six notices out the process within our rates program,
which is caused the delay. We were unfortunate, but you know,
we apologize to the community for that. But these things
do happen, they do, Andrew. But rates are due in
full by the August ninth if paying in by installments.

(07:56):
The first installments was also due by the twenty ninth
of Augus twenty twenty five. So yeah, and this year
we've I guess going to our.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Next topic, the West Coast Winners.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Yeah, so this year we've introduced a new way and
saying thanks for paying your rates in full on time,
which is the West Coast Winners, Andrew. So, so if
if you have paid in full by the twenty ninth
of August twenty twenty five, you automatically go into the
running to win one of four vouchers valued at two thousand,

(08:29):
one thousand, five hundred and five hundred dollars vouchers there
so they'll be drawn at the September council meeting and
the vouchers can be spent at West Coast businesses. So
it is back into the local It is putting back
in the local community, mate. Yes, and there is councilors
Council employees and businesses can't can apply or won't be

(08:52):
in the in the running running for it, then vouchers.
So it is a way to say thanks for support
and also supporting our local businesses and help our rate payers.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
So well, it's important to pay your rates, even if
you are paying installment, but to be paying in full.
It gives it the opportunity for the West Coast Council
to do more in their area.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
And that does mate, Yeah, and it gives us a
better cash flow as well, and an idea where our
cash flow is.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Because people will probably think we'll where do our rates go?
You've got the garbage, You've got local area where you've
got to cover. It's a big bast area.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
It is a vast area, mate, Yes, and you know
it's one of them things that if we know where
our money is at the time, we can make.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Sure start planning things ahead.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Yes, exactly right. And I guess you know it's one
of them things. A lot of people do pay off
weekly or fortnightly now and you know they get to
their rate notices come along and they've already.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Paid, which is good electricity, Yeah it is.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
Yeah, So there's an opportunity there for that as well,
so and then it's not a big burden on people
right at one time. They can have already paid it
off as they go through the year, and you know,
it's a it's a great initiative and we see a
lot of our retirees doing it that way, so it's great.
It's great to see again, but these vouchers can be

(10:13):
used any from anything from cafes to groceries to electricians
a load of gravel, as long as the service of
items is from the West Coast, from the West Coast business.
So it is a great initiative, and it's that that's
something that I guess that's where you know, you get
a change in changing employees in our in our operations,

(10:34):
and that's what's come along. So that that's come from
our trying to think of his job.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Description description.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Yeah, but yeah, so he's the guy that's in charge
of our corporate manager has come up with that little
idea which we think is a pretty good So yeah,
you know, it's good to see that we bring these
new period into our community, into our business and that's
we get some positive vow comes out of as well.
So it's great to see that these people come in

(11:07):
and have got some great thoughts.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Thoughts, anything else we need to talk about, Shane.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
No, I think just about covet mate right here.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
So okay, we'll see you next week for the GM
Scott rightly. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
I'm not sure whether I'll we get here next week
or whether Scott will be. He will see what happens.
We've got a at conference in meeting in Loncess and
I'll be still at work and I think Scott might
be unless I get you on via phone, so we'll
see how.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
We'll see how. So we go for next week, mate, Yes, okay,
