Speaker 1 (00:02):
Now on seven Excess, it's time to talk all things
wild West with Shane Pitt, Mayor of the West Coast.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yes, good morning, it's time for Mayor on air with
Mayor Shane Pitt. Good morning Shane, Good morning Andrew. How
are you another wet Friday?

Speaker 3 (00:16):
It is wet, isn't it? Mate?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Tell me about it to tee what we need to
be building an arc very soon? Yes, maybe get some
listener questions come in. One of those is from Treppor.
He said, please update the progress of the relocation of
Pioneer Women's Memorial. It was promised it will be going
to Anzac parking Strawn.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yes, Andrew, I have to take that one on notice. Mate.
We'll have to get the staff to find out where
that's at. And I know it was promised to go
in Exac Park, but we'll need to follow up with
staff about where that is given its removal from the location. Yeah,
so part of that broader Straw Waterfront upgrade. And we'll

(01:00):
make sure that that question is really laid back to
the resident. The answer, sorry to that question is really
back to the resident next.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Week, right, Okay, we'll get another question here. Why doesn't
council let shack owners Macquarie heads change ownership of shacks
into another name rather than being handed back to council.
Family members have been down there for generations but are
unable to pass their shack on to another family member
or a friend by selling them and changing ownership seems
harder than it should be. Counsel would benefit from a

(01:31):
smooth transition to existing rates.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah, so this is part of the head lease that
Council's got on that land with Parks of Wildlife. The
head lease renewal is up very shortly in twenty twenty seven.
So this has been a topic for a long period
of time now, So it's not something that this resident
has just came across. It's something which has been brought

(01:54):
up in the past and we've we were attempted to
get changed in the head lease but we're unable to
but we'll try again when the head lease is up
for renewal. So yeah, so watch this space. I guess
it's one of them things that we've certainly been trying
over the years to be pushing. It's something changed around this,

(02:14):
but we'll certainly be putting that on the table when
the head loose comes up with parks and wild.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Life fair enough, Okay to other council information expressions of
interest for the fire abatement contractors.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, so, we're open up expression of interest for the
provision of services for the removal of fire risk in
our area, especially around our towns. Services include, but it's
not limited to mowing, slashing, brush cutting and appropriate removal
of and disposal of grass and weeds. It's within the

(02:48):
approximate period between November twenty twenty five and April twenty
twenty six, when hopefully the weather improves a little. Yeah. So,
more information, including any application forms, can be found on
our website or by contact in the council office. So
expressions of interest must be received by the seventh of

(03:10):
November five pm.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Okay, fire risks themselves.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah so, we have commenced patrols around the municipality inspecting
properties for fire hazard risks. We're inspecting all properties, including
counsel owned, private property and government owned properties. And as
I've mentioned in the past, Andrew, our government agencies seem
to be the worst in our area with regard to

(03:35):
Crown land, but will certainly be patrolling all these areas.
Initial inspections will focus on weeds, particularly gorse and grass
hazards expected to increase his roll into the summer months. Yeah,
so whereafire hazard does exist, the batement notices will be
issued fair enough and property owners are encouraged to be

(03:57):
aware the potential risks on their property and you know
the risks that that does course to other residents.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
In our community, the people's property as well.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yes, made it is and I guess a great first
step for all property owners is to participate in the
twenty twenty five Tasmania Fire Services bush Ready Challenge.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
That sounds pretty good. I've looked it up myself.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yes, no, it's it's across four weeks and it helps
the house I was to plan and prepare for the
bush fire season because you just don't know. We don't. Yeah,
we've seen in the past few years bush fire season
here on the West Coast what it can.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Do, especially close to Rosebery and all that. Yes, ourselves
here in Queenstown. Yes, the council works to clear land.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Yeah, so we've Kensley has recently completed land clearing of
gorse removal on the pass of Land of Zoo. So
it's been a long term loose on this on this
land it was owned by Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
As the land was never use it was determined to
counselor the lease with the Department of Natural Resources an Environment,

(05:06):
requiring the gorse in any words, to be removed. So
we've completed the works with the hire of a thirteen
ton excavator and mulsion head which the works now completed.
We're waiting for inspection for the department to finalize the
least cancelations. But I guess that that will still then
mean that once it's back in the the Department of

(05:30):
Natural Resources hands that you know, they'll need to keep
that clear.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Then wait and see this weak course. Is it a
bad weed?

Speaker 3 (05:39):
It is, mate, Yes, it is a very bad weed.
It is. We've asked for it to go on the
National Weed Register through NRM. It hasn't got there as yet.
And it's one of them weeds that it's you know,
it is a big issue right around Tasman. So it's
not just hear now for a long time here on

(06:02):
the west coast and up around the midlands, but now
as soon it has moved.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yes, so if you do have it in your property,
get rid of it.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
Yes, mate, it is and it is hard to get
rid of, you know, just by cutting it down and
just doesn't get rid of it. You need to also
needs to be sprayed with some sprays that. Yeah, but
it needs to be kept on going as well. So
it's not something you can get rid of overnight. It
needs to a long period of time and remove it.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yes, Ok, then Shame, We're just going to make a
short break.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Keeping you in touch with your community. We're talking with
the Mayor of the West Coast Shame pit on West
Coast seven Excess.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
We're back with mayor on here with Shane Pitt. Good
morning again. Lifeguard positions vacant and courses, especially here in
Zene and Queenstown.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Yeah, so it's that time of the year when the
swimming pool seasons almost upon us and you know the
pools are looking good will be this year and especially
you know it's great to see that the Zone pool's
going to be open this year.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
I'm just going to say last year, the end of
last year, we're waiting to get that bill in Zene,
it's just wasn't ready.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Mate there again this year, so there's a few positions available.
So we've got to senior lifeguard at Zoon Pool and
seasonal lifeguards are needed at both zo and Queenstown Pool.
So with the two pools opening again, we need good
numbers of lifeguards employed to ensure that we have the
right courage at both pool So it's important for us

(07:42):
and the residents. A lifeguard is a great summer job
with the opportunity to learn more some important skills. So
we've got Royal Life Saving Tasmania holding several courses at
the Queenstown Pool on the fifteenth of November. So these
courses will get you qualified needed the qualifications needed to

(08:03):
work at these swimming pools and role now in right
Royal sorry mate, in role now as numbers will be
determined if the courses go ahead. So it's important that
we do get these courses off the ground. People interested
in lifeguard jobs but who may not have the qualification
and courage to still imply because you will, you know,

(08:25):
as long as they gain the qualifications during the course
as well, they're for the positions, that's right mate, Yeah,
So go to the website for all Contact Council Office
for more information on that. But it's a great opportunity there,
especially for those children that maybe you know the young

(08:45):
ones and people coming back from from UNI that maybe
they're doing their break or even higher education. They maybe
come back for their break as well. But also some
of them other people in our community that you might
just want to a part time job during the summer period.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Why not. You've also got more positions vacant here, I see.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
Yes, we're also recruiting for a municipal employee to work
from our Queenstown debat Apple and applications closed on the
nineteenth of October. Again information from our website. We'll call
the office for more information there. And yeah, exciting opportunities
there for anyone in our community.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Right, more excitement The official opening down there at Straw
on this coming.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Tuesday, Yes, Tuesday, the fourteenth of October is exciting and
so first off, we're opening the new slipway down there
and Strawn, So that's at two pm. That'll start, and
then we move on to the gym and multi Purpose center,
which you'll start around three point fifteen pm. So the
community will be able to tour both facilities during the opening.

(09:52):
So it's a great opportunity. Strong Playgroup, strawng Junior Sport
and the Strong CWA are also involved. Than the opening
of the new gym and multipurpose center. So it should
be a great afternoon for everyone, and it'll be a
family friendly event of course, and the opportunity for the
community to catch up with each other and also the

(10:12):
conversation with councilors who will be also at the opening.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Let's hope it don't rain, yes, mate, I hope so, yes, yes, okay,
the West Coast Winners.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Yes, so full payments of rates was due on the
thirtieth of September. All those who paid in full by
that date, we'll go in the running to receive one
of four vouchers had to be spent at West Coast
as part of the West Coast Winners program. It was
great to see the amount of people that did pay
their rates before that date in full.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
We do want to just to try and get that
two thousand dollars, yes.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Mate, so yeah, then four winners will be drawing at
the next council meeting on the twenty eighth of October,
so people can come along with the meeting, will tune
into the live stream online to see the draw. But
it was fantastic to see the amount of people that
I guess jumped on board with this exciting activity that
we've run this year. With regard to the rates.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
It's a good initiative, not it's to get people to
pay their rates. So you guys that council can use
the money.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Really it is an opportunity. And now we have seen
in recent times a bit of discussion on Facebook about
open drains. Well, you know, that's where that money goes
to as well, and we are working through that and
it's well, it's not going to be done overnight. We
have been working on that now for some period of

(11:36):
time and we will continue to work on it every year,
and especially as we do other projects that the community want.
The open drains are part of that community them projects
as well, especially you know footpath renewals, road renewals, all
that we're taken to into account the open drains as
part of that. But we also are doing some more

(11:58):
in house now which saves the cost a little bit,
which allows us to be able to do more open
drains every year. So we are working through it, and
especially you know there's a lot of open drains around
the West Coast. We understand that and we are working
through it. It's you know, over the last few years

(12:18):
we've certainly stepped up the rate on you know, covering
the open drains in our communities.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Fantastic. Any more council news.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
No, mate, I think that's it, apart from I guess,
you know, exciting.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
Times coming up the unconformity.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Yes, mate, I think the whole community is looking forward
to that. There's a bit of a buzz around there
is the whole West Coast, not just Queenstown. But you know,
things are stepping up now and the team will start
moving in shortly. Well they're here now, but they'll start
putting some things in place around our community now Monday.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
We've got road closures as well.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
Yeah, so we have got road closures coming up in
the main street of Queenstown to facilitate the unconformity, and
of course the stage and everything for the star act
coming to debate.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Yes, just one of the many.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
One of many, mates, Yes, And you know, and there's
a lot of great talent being coming along that will
back up Spider Baits and we've got some some West
Coast is coming back. I see what.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
I've brought some a lot of stuff down for next
week because Lauren's sitting in with the show with me.
For an hour each day until Unconformity opens and all
the music that are brought down, it's just unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Yes, there's some great acts and you know even some
ex local acts that are coming back, so which is
great to see that. You know, these these young people
forged there. I guess their experiences from coming from the
West Coast.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
So it's great, right, So we'll see you out and
about as well.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yes, mate, I will be about and we've got a
special guest coming down for the unconforming as well, which
is great West Coast not this d okay, yeah, but
you know that person will be around the around the
unconformed as well, having a look and see what's going on.
But you know there's certainly some great yeah, some great

(14:18):
activities happening over that weekend. So just so much happening, yes,
and I guess that the other thing is that the
bus service around the West Coast to get other West
coasts along the Queenstown for that activity issue was great
to see.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
You well, especially a free one going to Bernie.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
Yes, so bringing them down as well. So yeah, it's
really great.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Okay then Shane, we'll chatt to your next Friday.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
No worries mate, thank you so then.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
