Speaker 1 (00:01):
Now on seven excess, it's time to talk all things
wild West with Shane Pitt, Mayor of the West Coast
wild West. It is time for Mayor on here with
Shane Pitt. Good morning Shane, Good morning Andrew. How are
you not too bad for a Friday? Can't wait for
the weekend anyway, Let's get into it. The first rates
installment reminder is due.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yes, so only a few more days left now Andrew
before the rates are due to be paid in full
thirty September, of course, But those also paying in installments
the first installment is also due on the thirtieth September
as well, so yes, I guess. Payments can be made
online or through the website or at Australia Post via
(00:44):
b Pay, at any of our agencies in Zoos, Straw
and Roseberry, or in person at the Council chambers. So
if anyone's got any queries or have difficulties making payments,
please call Council Office on six to four seven one
four seven hundred or email Rates at West Coast dot
(01:05):
TAZ dot gov dot au.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
And that leads us into the West Coast Winners.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, so it's also reminded to rate payers who pay
in full by the thirty September, we'll go into the
draw to win one of four vouchers one value to
two thousand one of one thousand and two, five hundred
dollars vouchers which are to be spent with West Coast businesses.
So the West Coast Winners Incentive has been introduced this
(01:29):
year as a way of saying thanks for those paying
their rates in full and on time and also opportunities
support some of the West Coast.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Businesses, which is great.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Yeah, So remember paying in full by the thirty September.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Under that draw. Yeah, and of course you had the
September Council meeting just gone by.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
We certainly did mate. The monthly meeting was held on
last Tuesday. So we approve rates and remissions for the
Zoo Neighborhood House who do a power of work for
our community, not just over in Zoom, but other communities.
So we appreciate the effort that the people do in
the Zoo community. And also the Zoo Lions Club again
(02:12):
another organization that provides some great volunteering I guess for
our community.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
And activities too.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
And activities yes mate, So they were well involved in
the zoo Gym opening over there and Zoon the weekd ago,
two weekends ago. And you know it was really great
to see them, it was mate, Yes, it was a
great event. Yes, so it's it is great. And there
(02:42):
was a question around wandering dogs and dogs off leads
a reminder that community members should notify council by taking
notes of the times and location, especially when it's out
of out of ours. But if during during hours, please
call the office straight away and then they can get
someone down there.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
So when now there was a dog must be put
on a lead to go for a walk.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Yes, that's right, mate, yes, And a lot of wondering
dogs out there, especially there's a lot of our community
that do early morning walks and quite daunting sometimes when
you know some of these dogs race up to these
people as they're walking around our streets.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Fair enough, Shame, We're going to take a short break
keeping you in touch with your community. We're talking with
the mayor of the West Coast, Shame Pit on West
Coast seven Excess. We are back with mayor on air,
Shane Pitt. Good morning, Shane. Let's have a look at
the Straw and Waterfront Precinct A redevelopment project.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yes, Sir Andrews. So we received a couple of questions
from members of the public and some councilors at the
council meeting on Tuesday night about the Strong Waterfront redevelopment
project martionally in relation to the shelter wall and the
project completion date. So council acknowledges then turns raised about
(04:01):
the concrete shelter wall and the visual impact on the harbor.
The wall was always part of the design and we're
shown on the original design plans the contract concrete wall
forms the back of for a shelter that's going in
that area, which will which would probably by now should
be almost completed, which will be on the water side
of the new structure. As it is now, the wall
(04:24):
is stark, and we acknowledge that I might need some
treatment and looking at options at the moment around what
we can do in that area just to brighten that
wall up a little bit, which you know, we hope
the project will be completed prior to Christmas as well,
so you know, it's certainly we'll make a lot of
difference down there at the Strong Waterfront and in summer,
(04:46):
yes it will, Yeah, no, that's and that's one of
the main ideas to brighten that area up and you
give it a bit of a venue there for people
to gather during the summer.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Or maybe someone's got some ideas.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Yeah, well that's right, and like these ideas that what's
there now was what was originally put forward in the
plan for that wholly of the master plan for the
whole area, which was some time ago. Now I understand that,
but the community did have opportunity then to and a
lot of these ideas did come from the community back then,
(05:19):
and it was a fair time ago that this was
first started as well. So we've seen the redevelopment of
the tour boat precinct there and the building and that
was all part of the original master plan as well.
So we're just this is just finishing off what was
started some years ago.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Now nearly in completion. Glovet Yes okay to the Hedley
Fall Park in Queenstown.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yeah, so safety audit was completed yesterday with the contractor
reviewing the report before being able to advise that the
opening of the park is okay. So we now expect
the park to be opened on Wednesday, the first of October.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
So it was great.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yes, it is great, even though it's a little bit,
you know, later than what we first wanted, but just
a small section will remain fenced off while that we
wait for improvement weather conditions, so we can ash felt
that area. It's around the half half court basketball over there.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
So of course it will be great opening up with
the unconformedy happening, Yes.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Mate, it will. You know, that was one of the
plans that we try and get it open for the
school holidays as well. Okay, we might have just missed
most of that, but at least you know it's going
to be open, and I know there's a lot of
people waiting for it actually. Yeah. So we're also planning
an official opening and a community celebration later in the
(06:41):
year once the weather improves a little bit better as well.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
So right, yeah, okay to the straw and gym and
multipurpocenter there.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, so the certificate of occupancy has been received, the
gym equipment is being organized at the moment. Works to
install the smart lock system is now being scheduled, and
this will allow access to various sections of the facility
via an app on your phone, which it's been a
great success.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
It's like the gym here in Queenstown.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, and also the toilets as well around our community.
We're starting to roll out out, so the taller toilets
has been done. The new facility over in Zon has
got the app as well. So no, we're starting to
roll out out right across the community now, so that'll
be with with some of our assets infrastructure. So it's great.
(07:32):
It's great to see and we've already received a lot
of great comments from visitors from other community that say
that they wish they had it in their community. So
we might be leading away there a little bit Andrew,
which is great to.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
See, which is good.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
It stops vandals, yes, it does, mate, it does, and
we expect public access to the facilities will be available
in the next couple of weeks. So that's down at
Strawn and of course an official opening and a community
celebration and tour is also being planned.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
So watch this space, watch this space. Yes, Okay that
the Straw and slipway.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Yes, So the upgrades to the slipway and Strawn are
now operational, which is great to see, and vessels have
already booked to use the new slipway with a first
boat on the slip earlier this week, So larger boats
now able to use the slipway, we're hoping to see
a broad arrange of boats use the facility, so we
might see some We're hoping to see some of them
(08:26):
major or the large yachts that travel the world may
have to.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Call in the Strawn for maintenance.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Yeah, so you know, and it's it's one of the
things now that we've got a slipway that can offer
a service for larger vessels, that we might see a
few different arrangement of vessels into Strawn, which is which
will be great for the strong community, especially the kids
down there, that I might like to see some different
(08:53):
different boats.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
That's right. Okay, Finally, let's talk about the closure of
the ben to go back happening today at one pm.
We had Channel seven news here yesterday which I played
this morning, and a lot a lot of people are
happy yourself, still trying to hear work back from the
Bendy going back. Nothing.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
No, mate, we haven't heard anything at all. And I
guess that's you know, that's they call themselves a community bank.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
It's disappointing, it is, it is disappointing.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
It's you know, we've tried our hardest. We've written letters
to just about every politician that we can think of,
the Prime Minister, the Treasurer. You know, we had Tammy
Tyrrell here, We've had Gavin Pearce and An Urkhart. We've
even wrote to the Minister for Tasmania, Federal Minister for Tasmania,
(09:45):
Senator Dowling. You know, there's a vast rage of people
that we've contacted to try and see what we do.
And of course Richard Robert Barwick that's from an Australian
Citizen Party. He's been right behind this as well, trying
to you know, change the when he gave banks decision,
(10:05):
you know, we haven't heard anything as yet, so I don't.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Think what he is saying is you don't hear anything
from the bank. It's like they're hiding.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
It is made. I think they and that's what they
are doing. They're hiding. They're hoping that it all goes quiet,
which you know, we'll see how we continue on. We've
got some other irons in the fire at the moment
for the next step and we'll see how we go
with that. But at this stage, you know, it's unfortunate,
but it's I think reality is here today and you know,
(10:37):
we've tried our hardest and we've also seen a lot
of other people in there around Australia have certainly jumped
on board here. We've had letters from people from residents
from other parts of Australia that have voicually concerned other
parts of Tasmania. Yeah, so it's you know, we've had
Creative Coast Authority have put a place to the letter
(11:00):
as well on behalf of all the mayors on the
Northwest Coast to the CEO of the Bendigo Bank where
they haven't received any response to that either. So at
this stage, so it's yeah, it's disappointing, and we'll just
keep keep moving forward with another option possibly and we'll
see how we go with them options. We're certainly trying
(11:23):
every option we can find out there. We're approaching every
other bank that's in Tasmania at the moment whether the yeah,
whether there's option for them to come down here. So
we'll see how we go. We'll keep the the residents
in communicated with to see how things pan out. But yeah, unfortunate.
(11:44):
Today's the day, Andrew, and.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
It's like the big red Cross has just hit the building.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Yes, and of course Jeanett's organized that.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Wake that's happening at three o'clock this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
It is mate down the golf club, I believe. So. Yeah,
so you know, for those that are passion about the
bank and the work that's been done, please head along
to that. Yeah. No, I guess we've we've tried our hardest.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
And like a sad day for all of us, it is.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
It is, and we've you know, out of this though.
There's also been some Australian wide media, especially from the regional.
Dal Webster from the Regional certainly has put a lot
of effort into finding out information about about the banking
industry and it appears that you know, which we had
a slight inkling, but we weren't sure. But she's brought
(12:33):
out that, you know, the banks are blacklisting postcodes with
mining activities in them, so for home loans, which is
disappointing given the fact that we want to build our community.
We've changed our demographics and we're not relying so much
on mining as one industry anymore. We've got tourism, we've
(12:56):
got adventure tourism, we've got the festivals and our arts
as well, you know, so there's a lot of and
of course the agriculture industry, so a lot of other
industries in our community.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Apart from mining.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Apart from mining. So you know, and you know that's
been broadcast now right across Australia and it certainly has
hit a few nerves. Of course, we haven't heard anything
from the bendy Go Bank, so you know, even though
they that's information that was brought forward by the region
all they even come out and said it's not true.
So you know, there might be some truth in that.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Sky News was here and Aspen was here, Aspen Blomfield
and he did a search even Mount Isa.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yes, yes, mate, yes, no, it's right across Australia. It's
not just us here in Tasmania. It's you know, every
states in Australia that have got communities that around mining
in their postcode. They're blacklisted, you know, which is disappointing
given that you know, mining holds up our the wealth
(13:59):
of Australia. It does, yes, especially Tasmonia. You know the
amount of Mania that comes out of the West Coast
and if it wasn't for the West Coast and the
mining industry Tasmania will be in a lot worse condition
money wise and what they are so yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Right, okay then Shane, anything else that we need to know.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
About, Oh, I don't think so, mate. I think that's
about it. Hopefully the weather starts improving. That hasn't been
real good this week and today's the same.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
It's pretty pretty wet out, pretty wed out there. Yes, okay,
next week we'll be doing memory on Thursday being Friday
at the Bernie Show holiday.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Yes, mate, Yes, the general manager and myself will be
in for it.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
Sounds great. Yes, okay. That is Mayor on air, Shane Pitt.
If you've got any questions for the mayor, get it
into us. You just go to seven Excess dot com
dot a. You give us all the details. Of course
you'll find out what's happening at the council in your community.
That is the Mayor on there.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
All.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Thanks for the West Coast Council booking in partnership with
our community
